Managing your XT720 [Workflow optimisations] - Milestone XT720 Android Development

After (re-)installing various froyo builds and formatting/re-partitioning my SDCard several times, i found to tricks i like to share:
1. Easy SDCard paritioning, without a PC:
1.1 Install the App2Card app: source site, not english!
1.2 Unmount your SDCard (in the Preferences->SDCard menu)
1.3 Use the storage option form App2Card to create the fat/ext/swap partitions
2. Restoring nandroid images (without a running android):
2.2 Make sure OpenRecovery is installed (including a OpenRecovery.zip in the SD root)
2.3 Hold "Volume Up" while booting the phone. That will result in a direct boot to OpenRecovery.
If you are only getting an Triangle/Exclamation mark, you can get to OpenRecovery lite by pressing VolumeDown+Cam, but you didnt install OR correctly.
If you want to have adb in OR u need to attach the cable BEFORE starting OR

That prog has alot of potential because you can chose what prog you want to move to EXT but for me it would always end by corrupting my ext2 or 3 partition, has stability improved?
Usually after 3 or 4 days my widgets would start dying and stuff...

Stabilitiy is not at it's best .. the program freezes sometimes at startup and i would advice to not use the reboot-partitioning function. Besides that, i can't say much. My mobile is running fine for ~ 3days with it, but i didn't use any move to ext functions. For that, i'm going for Link2SD.

Need some serious hel.

Hi everyone, I'm new to installing Android to the Vogue and I haven't the slightest idea where to start. I've tried multiple times but always seem to mess up with everything. Can anyone give me a step by step tutorial or even make the folders for me so that i can put it in my SD card, let me know and thank you guys for your help. Also if possible and anyone would want to help and make the folders for me I would like an eclair build.
were you planning on running android on NAND (which is where windows mobile is now) or off your sd card.
I was planning on running it off NAND, any suggestions?

Your phone is already unlocked?
Seeing that you have never run Android before you may want to try a few builds on SD card first to see which one you like, and have the flexability to go back to Windows Mobile. A class 6 microSDHC card is pretty comparable to NAND speedwise in my opinion.
would recommend one of the donut builds (plemen, myn). both guys make a fast and stable donut, GPS and bluetooth work great. since I've got a bit of time, here's a step by step with links to take you from a ground zero unlocked vogue to running android on your nand (fastest way, replaces windows mobile). this has been written up a few times before, but today is your lucky day
read the entire set of instructions before getting started.
BEFORE STARTING
1. know that there are multiple ways to flash a rom to your phone. here are a few
a. using windows, get a flashing package from one of the xda devels, and replace the RUU_signed.nbh file in that package with whatever you are trying to flash (try NFSFAN's package, it has always worked well for me for this; some carrier packages don't work), renamed the same way
b. use a 2GB or smaller micro SD card with the .nbh named VOGUIMG.NBH in root, then place the phone in bootloader mode (see #2)
c. use linux and HTCFlasher - don't know much more about this method, find it here
2. if flashing from a computer, I always recommend flashing from the bootloader, NOT through active sync. enter bootloader: hold down power and camera, then press and release reset, wait for the tricolor screen. then connect to usb, and flash away
3. Flashing etiquette: I always flash everything twice, back to back, for good measure. while the phone is flashing, don't move it, don't open programs, don't surf the internet, just leave your phone and computer alone, hands off. and don't flash from a virtual machine; trust me, just don't.
4. Have patience. There are steps that will take minutes to complete. Just wait. If you are not sure is something is happening or if the phone is frozen, put the phone down and go do something else for at least 10 minutes.
GET STARTED
1. unlock your phone (cokeman's unlocker, hardSPL 2.31).
2. flash a "GPS capable shipped rom" from post 1 here. make sure you have working phone, working data, and working GPS (if you are on verizon and have problems getting GPS to work, see here - thx drewden123.
3. upgrade to the bell 3.42.50 radio, find the radio only version here. flash it the same way you flash any other ROM - you can use a rom package to flash it, just rename it to RUU_signed.nbh and replace the one in the package with it, then flash away)
4. download the necessary files. you'll need:
a. a rom in the form of androidinstall.tgz from this forum. a couple of great donut options are myn's and plemen's and plemen's
b. a .nbh found at sourceforge. the sourceforge page contains both stable builds, and the latest betas - don't know what to use? see this thread. choose your resolution based on the recommendations of the chef (the rom builder), also read here.
5. create a folder on the root of your micro sd card called andboot
6. place your androidinstall.tgz file in the andboot folder
7. flash your .nbh file by placing your phone in bootloader mode, and using one of the above flashing methods
8. as soon as the phone reboots (it should vibrate), hold down this button to enter the install menu like your life depended on it until the boot menu pops up
9. in the top half of the boot menu are your booting/file storage settings. for nand, select "sys on nand" and "data on nand" (other options will work too, but for your standard nand install, I would go with this)
10. go down to "1. install system" and click it. at this point it doesn't matter, but on the second screen that pops up go ahead and choose wipe data as well. when swapping between builds in the future, it is recommended to start with a new data file for best results. however, if it is the same class of build (i.e. between two donut builds), keeping your data.img file and simply using the "clear dalvik cache" should keep you running smooth without having to change all of your settings again.
11. wait for the install menu to re-appear. when it does, scroll down to "9. quit" and click it.
12. wait. keep waiting. in fact, step away from your phone. when you come back, turn the screen on, you should see the Donut lock screen!
OTHER NOTES
1. to reflash windows, simply enter bootloader mode, and flash your windows rom
2. buttons in android: see here.
wow thank you so much, this is exactly what I needed, once I get everything going I will let you know, currently I'm running NFSFAN's Final 6.5 ROM, its great and all but I need me some Android. Thanks again for your help and I will keep you posted.

[borat voice] Very nice!
Now you'll just have to post in every thread "please see my signature"
Tatnai, I just want to thank you for your post. I was able to flash myn's build of andriod to nand yesterday after going through maybe five different threads(all with slightly differing methods). After reading your instructions, I am relieved that I did it correctly.
Quick a question just to verify. When I want to reflash to a newer build of andriod in the future, I'd just have to place the correct .nbh file in root, androidinstall.tar file in the andboot folder and hold volume up?

they may be changing around the .nbh file stuff, so this answer is depending on what happens with that, BUT... you shouldn't need to flash a new .nbh to change your system unless you need to change resolution. if you don't, read on.
NOTE: the process is the same whether running on NAND, or on SD card (ext2 or regular sd). Just don't mess with the boxes at the top of the install menu that say where your sys and data are installed.
TO RUN AN UPDATE that someone has provided in their thread for their build:
1. place the androidupdate.tar in the /andboot folder on your sd card
2. reboot your phone, hold this button until you see the install menu
3. from the bottom portion of that menu, select "Install update". click yes on the popup menu that notifies you that this will adjust the system files.
4. wait. it will eventually finish and kick you back to the install menu
5. go to "quit" and click it.
TO CHANGE FROM ONE ROM TO ANOTHER (same class, i.e. donut to donut)
Note: if you have a data.img, you technically should be able to keep it while moving between ROMs of the same class (i.e. donut rom to a donut rom, or eclair to eclair rom). just make sure to clear the dalvik cache before the new one boots up. however, if there are any problems, the first thing you should then do is wipe your existing data.img using the install menu and the boot your new system allowing it to create a fresh one.
1. place the new ROM file (androidinstall.tgz) into the /andboot folder on the root of your sd card, overwriting any previous install file that was there before
2. reboot your phone, hold this button until you see the install menu
3. from the bottom portion of that menu, select "backup /data", then select "yes" to overwrite old backups (btw, you can rename any databackup.img in the /andboot folder to anything you want to keep multiple backups; when you want to revert to a particular data.img backup, just rename it to databackup.img before going to the install menu). this will give you a backup of your current data just in case something goes wrong. it will take a while to complete, and eventually take you back to the install menu.
4. from the bottom portion of that menu, select "clear dalvik cache". allow this to run, it will return you to the install menu when complete.
5. from the bottom portion of that menu, select "Install system". click "yes" on the popup menu that notifies you that this will overwrite the system files. a second popup will open asking if you want to wipe your /data, select "no" for this to keep your current data file. once it installs, you will be returned to the install menu.
6. select "quit" from the bottom of the menu. this should boot android. first boot after clearing the dalvik cache, installing a new system, or wiping a data.img will take a while, just be patient
TO CHANGE FROM ONE ROM TO ANOTHER (different class, i.e. donut to eclair, or cupcake to donut)
Note: I would not recommend keeping your data.img while switching between different versions of android.
1. place the new ROM file (androidinstall.tgz) into the /andboot folder on the root of your sd card, overwriting any previous install file that was there before
2. reboot your phone, hold down this button until you see the install menu
3. from the bottom portion of that menu, select "backup /data", click ok to overwrite old backups (btw, you can rename any databackup.img in the /andboot folder to anything you want to keep multiple backups; when you want to revert to a particular data.img backup, just rename it to databackup.img before going to the install menu). this will give you a backup of your current data for future use, i.e. if you decide to return back to that version of android. it will take a while to complete, and eventually take you back to the install menu.
4. from the bottom portion of that menu, select "Install system". click "yes" on the popup menu that notifies you that this will overwrite the system files. a second popup will open asking if you want to wipe your /data, select "yes" to delete the current data file. once it installs, you will be returned to the install menu.
6. select "quit" from the bottom of the menu. this should boot android. first boot after clearing the dalvik cache, installing a new system, or wiping a data.img will take a while, just be patient.
Thanks again for the information. I and I'm sure others appreciate it. I hope your FAQ thread will get stickied.
I keep get an error when I am trying to install from NAND, it says Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception in interrupt, anyone have any clues?? I am trying to install SenseHERO 1.4 and I am using the NAND kit posted with the UpdateROM utility. Any suggestions?
Nice work
Is there anyone in nj that can help me install this damn android on the vogue.. ive tried all the methods and nothing seems to work.. can it be the microSD card?? the files im using?? ive been trying to use every single build out there and nothing seems to work..

[Q] General Kothas questions about LG GT540

Hello again,
I see that it's riridiculous to make a lot of topics, so I will post all my questions in this thread. So let's start :
1. I want to update to 2.3 or atleast 2.2 ROM. I wanted to use Cyanogen mod, but in http://www.cyanogenmod.com/devices I can't see my phone. What should I do? If you know please write link.
2. How to install ROM with Fastboot or Recovery or something like that? Also please write guide link.
3. Why I can't root my phone with this guide http://android.modaco.com/content/lg-gt540-optimus-gt540-modaco-com/310737/how-to-root-your-lg-gt540/?
In Stability Test menu I can't find chose for "Enable Root Permission".
4. Is there any way to move Apps to SD without ROOT and updating to newer than 2.1 version?
I think that enough. What who will help me, I will be thanks forever!!!
Hello,
1. Our phone is not supported entirely by cyanogenmod so what developers do is port it to our phone but still not all the options work, but most of them does.If you are not informed some a user has created a petition to cyanogenmod wich all the people that has LG GT540 should sign.
What we ask?
That CM officially support the phone and develop official CM roms for the handset.
Offical Cyanogenmod Support Petition
2. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12770991#post12770991
3. if you have stock 2.1 use Z4root, all the custom versions are coming rooted already, so you dont have to worry about that anymore.
4. With 2.1 you can but you must partition your sdcard with a partition tool software, i use EASEUS Partition Master-Home Edition its free also in 2.1 you can use link2sd app for that purpose or app2sd script. I personaly use link2sd it works fine for me.
Now with 2.2+ versions that has cyanogenmod option you can move apps2sd with an option in Applications setting:
First: thick Allow application moving
Second: in Install Location pick External
Or you can install an application from market called App2SD is free and you can manage all your applications from there.
THANKS ARE WELCOMED
THANKS! THANKS! THANKS!
Also, could you write more how to partion my sd and move apps to it? Do you have any guide for this or something like that?
Sorry for double post. So I can move apps to sd with doing something with sd and link2sd app? Could you post guide for these things?
Before anything i will recommend you the 2.2 ROM superfast froyo im using it, and has been great so far. Follow my guide and flash the fastboot version for CLEAN INSTALL. Tomorrow the guy that made it is supose to post an update, so better way until tomorrow.
Once you have the ROM flashed use the App2SD application from market for move your applications. NO need to partition your sdcard.
Ok if want to keep in 2.1 version then link2sd is for you
1. first download EASEUS Partition Master Home Edition
2. Once installed plug your phone to the computer, wait until it be recognized
3. Open EASEUS "run as Administrator" (if windows7 user) and you will see the software recognized your SDcard (you can figure for the size of your sdcard)
4. Right clic on the partition and select Resize/Move
5. Resize from right to left until you see in Unallocated Space After 512 MB or close (510 is enough) . Clic OK
6. Now that you have a new partition, right clic, select Resize/Move and do the same process again for create a new partition of 32 MB (that is for Swap). What is swap? its like a second memory. Clic OK
7. Now select each partition, right clic and select FORMAT:
* 1st partition >> FAT32 format
* 2nd partition >> Ext2/FAT32 format (pick one i use Ext2)
* 3rd partition >> do not format (use SWAPPER 2 app from market to activate it)
ALL 3 PARTITIONS MUST BE PRIMARY NOT LOGICAL
Thanks
(Message too short)

ManualNootered NC w/ CM7 on 16GB SDcard - My Problems/Solutions

I know this is a long post.
Short version: New to MN/CM7. Screwed up install. Couldn't find certain things on XDA. Re-installed. Posting steps for those who might be searching for similar situations.
I was an autonooter only person and was patiently waiting for AN for 1.2.
But well... come on. I had to play with the ManualNooter. Read all the posts (twice).
After making a bootable SD card, I went to ManualNooter a few days ago.
Loved it. Then got greedy and wanted more.
Decided to try my hands at CM. Read lots of posts and decided to try the SD card CM7 route.
(Still not comfortable doing the eMMC route.)
Used the post here as my resource:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957
Originally had tried to put the below on system, but recv'd glitchy problems.
I'm completely sure that it was my ignorance that caused it - NOT the original post sited above.
[generic-sdcard-v1.3.img]
[update-cm-7.0.3-encore-signed]
Glitchy keyboard (spastic would be more accurate).
No possible way to boot into recovery from SD card (I tried EVERYTHING listed on XDA, would just do a reboot, no recovery area)
Actually had "Reboot/Bootloader" as option. couldnt find any listing on XDA about that as an option.
So I decided to start over and use the following.
[generic-sdcard-v1.3.img]
[cm_encore_full-114]
[gapps-gb-20110613-signed]
The following are the steps I took - hopefully useful for anyone else who may have came across this or similar issues.
(I know it's super basic for some - sorry).
1. Generic SD Card image zip generic-sdcard-v1.3.img -> unzipped to get (generic-sdcard) in its own folder.
2. Win32DiskImager to write image file (Select source & destination. Click WRITE and YES).
3a. Moved Full RC to SDcard (cm_encore_full-114) - NO RENAMING
3b. Moved GApps to SDcard (gapps-gb-20110613-signed) - NO RENAMING
4. Use [MiniTool Partition Wizard Home] or [EASEUS] to resize partition. Should be (1.75Gb) as per stated by DizzyDen
5. Eject. Remove from PC.
6a. Install SD card into Nook
7. Power Up.
8a."Loading" (edges of words light black)
8b. Linux Install (w/ Penguin) - this includes GApps install
8c. Automatically Powers Down
9a. Turn On Nook.
9b. Green Cyanogen logo.
9c. Blank Screen
9d. Blue Rotating Cyanogen7 logo
10a. Setup Wizard
10b. Touch Android
10c. Skip setup
10d. Setup wifi
10d. Back
11. Setup Google Account
12a. Apps to install (may be able to skip this step - I just selected them all, I'm sure there are lots that aren't needed)
12b. Accept Market Terms
12c. Install Apps
12d. Add Google account
12e. Finish
12f. Recv'd the following message: "Sorry! The application Setup Wizard (process com.android.setupwizard) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again."
12g. Force Close
(Seems to have worked ok though)
UPDATING CM Build
1. Power off
2. Remove SD card from Nook
3a. Insert SD card into PC
3b. Move build (update-cm-7.1.0-RC1-encore-signed) onto card in top directory, not changing name.
3c. Eject
4a. Insert SD card into Nook
At this point you might be able to do the hold Power + N, but I thought I would try the reboot/recovery option.
5a. Power Up
5b. Green Cyanogen logo
5c. Screen flashes
5d. Blue rotating logo
5e. System loads
6a. Hold Power to get to Reboot option. Select
6b. [Reboot Tablet] --> Recovery --> OK
6c. Reboots
7a. Green Cyanogen logo
7b. Linux Installation (Penguin) - No GApps this time because already installed.
7c. Automatically Powers Down
System loaded.
As it stands now, the NC is rocking and this is my info for my tablet.
- NookColor 1.2 (NOT Bluedot)
- ManualNooter 4-6-16
- 16GB SanDisk SD card
- Android Version: 2.3.4
- Kernel Version: 2.6.32.9
- Mod Version: CyanogenMod-7.1.0-RC1-encore
- Build Number: GRJ22
If I have made any errors, or there are things I could clean up. Please let me know.
My next step is to install some new OC Kernels.

[Q] Guidance Appreciated

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen;
So I'm trying to run an android rom from an SD card, and I've tried a couple images-one froyo, one this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1045018
I'm basically looking for reliability/speed, the ability to run FPSe and the ability to run word apps. It needs to run bluetooth and I'd like it to run most apps. Any suggestions? I would have gone for the CM7 nightly roms, but honestly I'm looking for something low maintenance and easy to setup. (The instructions/downloads on that thread were confusing.)
Thank you for any assistance.
Apoc
I recently went through rooting my NC from an SDcard. First with the nightlys and last with the 7.0.3 CM7 stable build.
I'd say, if you want low maintenance and quick setup, go with the CM7 7.0.3 Stable release.
Here are the steps I took to install CM7/GApps and run from the SDcard - I'll try to make this as seamless and possible: Sorry about the absence of links, I haven't reached the post limit to enable hyperlinking in my replies. Maybe some kind forum poster can post my links in a reply...
1. Download and Unzip this program to a directory (doesn't need installed)
Win32DiskImager V0.1:
2. Download your SDcard Image, CM7 Build, and GApps zip:
- "Size Agnostic" Generic SD-Image:
- Latest STABLE CM7 Release (not the nightly)
- GApps zip for latest build (CM7)
3. Buy a greater than 2gB MicroSD card (I have an 8GB PNY microSD)
4. Connect MicroSD card to computer
5. Extract Generic-sdcard-v1.3.img.zip to local folder
6. Burn generic-sdcard.img to SD card using the following steps
- Open win32diskimager
- Select generic-sdcard.img for image file
- Select microSD card drive letter for Device (should be auto selected)
- Click "Write" to write image to the microSD card
- After image is applied to microSD, close win32 disk imager
7. Remove microSD card and re-connect to computer
8. Copy CM7 and GApps .zip files to microSD drive
- This will be the main microSD drive, like I:\
- Do not extract the .zips, just copy the whole files
9. Remove microSD card and insert into TURNED OFF Nook Color
10. Hold power button on Nook Color until the screen flashes, then let go
11. Read the screen, it will bring up a terminal with installation progress... it will inflate the CM7 files to the SDcard, then shut off.
12. After shutdown, keep the SD in the nook, turn the nook back on.
13. You'll see an android pop up and finally get to some prompts
- Hit next, skip the part with linking your google account (for now)
- Enable Wireless and Connect to your Router
- Follow the rest of the prompts
- Eventually hit the home screen
14. Your CM7 install is done! If you turn off the NC, remove the SD card, and turn back on the NC... you'll be greeted with the stock V1.3 nook color
15. If you check the apps and don't see Google Apps (GApps) or the market follow these steps:
- While in CM7, hold the power button until a prompt comes up
- Click REBOOT
- Click RECOVERY
- Click OK
- Your NC will now restart and show that console setup again (like before when you installed CM7)... it will install the GApps and market... and shut down.
- Turn back on your NC, check your apps, see the Market, Click it, link your Google Account.
That should be it. Sorry for the long-winded install, thats about as basic as I can put it.
Cheers!

Thank you for the assistance. Your instructions proved a bit more enlightening. I used the latest stable version and have it working fine. (I even played FF7 for awhile.) My only current problem is bluetooth. It fails to enable when I tell it to.

I would go with the latest nightlies. They are *way* past the stable with a lot of very positive improvements. I've been running nightlies (starting with 128) for around 2 months now with zero issues. You don't have to keep updating them - they are very, very stable already.

Sometimes the first time you run bluetooth, you have to turn off WiFi, reboot, turn on bluetooth, and then turn on WiFi. I only had to do it once and both toggled properly forever after.
I'll second the recommendation of grabbing a nightly build--they're no higher maintenance or less stable than 7.0.3, and they greatly simplify things like overclocking, improving audio gain, and USB host via compatibility with the Nook Tweaks app. They also enable deep sleep which means less charging, boot considerably faster, and have built-in multiboot, to name a few things.

Ideos X5 not open !

Hi.
- I had ideos x5 with Ics Aurora (2.2).
- After with no backup i changed services.jar
- Then when i open my phone, always reset and starting again.
- So im open on clockworkmod and try restore to android 2.3 version
- While restoring app give an error and restore can't finish.
- After i restart phone. Then bad ! Clockworkmode can't open.
- Volume + and Power button > Pink screen but only external sd card shown
- I can't reach internal sd card for changing system files.
- Now android can't open with any process, always reseting. and clockworkmode can't open.
Please give me a idea. I'm fully desperate now !!
Have you tried installing 2.3 the normal way without using a clockworkmod backup? Grab a copy of b526 (or whatever one you prefer), put the dload folder on the external SD, the boot the phone by holding volume +, volume-, power.
That's what I would try first.
tried..
yes i tried this.
- HUAWEI_U8800_Android 2.3 V100R001C00B526G001 i downloaded.
- put in external with dload directory UPDATE.APP file.
- and open v+ , v- , power.
- pink screen coming but updating never start !
- always pink screen ..
Have you tried accessing the pink screen through Linux? I find sometimes that the phone can be a little more responsive to Linux than windows.
Thx a lot man
Thanks for all replies man
- Finaly i copied bootloader.bin to external and also copy firmware update.bin to external.
- when starts with vol+ vol- and power now installing firmware
No worries. I looked this up a bit more and it turns out that 2.3.5 has a locked bootloader, so you would never have been able to access it in pink screen anyway. Also learnt that I need to study a lot more about how my phone actually works
