Picture quality - Focus General

I read several reviews about the focus before I bought it. All of them praised the picture quality.
My focus takes HORRIBLE pictures. I mean they are TERRIBLE. They are grainy, blurry and just look plain bad.
Is this the same for other people or could there be a problem with my camera?
I wanted to get other peoples input before I brought my phone into the AT&T store to look at it.

You can compare to these pics:

IMO the Focus camera isn't nearly as nice as the iPhone camera but I wouldn't say my Focus took bad pictures. If they're really bad, you may well have a faulty camera. Take it back and at least compare.

Gotta say my Focus takes some of the best pictures of any cell phone I've ever owned.

Really? I think the iPone camera is very meh. My HD2 took much better pictures.
So AT&T yet again surprised me. I went in and voiced my concerns about my camera and the guy went out back, got me a new phone, set everything up and I was on my way in like 15 minutes. Zero hassle.
I'm updating my phone now and will take some pictures after. I hope they come out better...

and I learned a lesson... don't plug a SD card into a non updated Focus.. On phone #3..

About the camera...

Is it not that good, or is it just me?
Everytime I take a picture, the camera freezes when saving the picture,
Problem is.. the "frozen" image, is slighly before the actual image which is saved..
Most of my picture so far, are blurred...
Id sort of expected that this camera was lighting fast, but so far it dosent seem so....
On the other hand.. My hands are constantly shaking, and that dosent help much.
So anyone here with steady hands, who takes great pictures, and its just me whos a bad photographer?
I could post on saturday. since the stores are closed aswell as the postal office now in the easter. and I won't be home again untill friday.
But I could post some so that we could compare when I got the phone in my hands.

I am really interested in how the picture quality will be compared to the X1 and the Magic. If it is anything like either of them, then I hope the Magic.
It is such a shame that I can't get it now, when it is in the mail. but I am just to far away from home at the moment :/
it really sucks tho
Tip for non blurry pictures, use touch focus mode - works very good here.
Seems to focus better and you don't risk rocking the phone because you press the camera key.
Otherwise it's as with all mobile phone cams, the sensors and optics are limited by size, so of course you get better pictures the more light you have.
I find the camera very nice in comparison to my N1.
My pictures turn out just fine. maybe a blurry one once in a while but nothing to complain about. Try turning on the image stabilizer

Image stabilizer!!!! Why didnt I think of that while checking in the settings....
Not the pictures are actually good... Strange thing now, when I click to take the picture, it freezes with a blurry image, but the actual picture is great!
here is some pictures that I've taken today can be found here.
I might upload some other pictures later. but we will see.
I do not think that it is that bad, it is better than the X1 camera, and I do think that the picture quality was slightly better than the Magic camera aswell.
The only thing that I can complain about with this phone would be the battery I guess.. It could have been better. but I tought the same thing about my x1 in the beginning, but now does it last 2 days some times.
2-3 hours when I am teethering the network and downlading with torrent on it tho... but that is things that takes alot of battery.
mine freezes with a blurry image aswell. not sure about the actual quality since ive only seen them on the phone itself.
ive got another question tho, does your camera in macro mode make noise when pressing the button halfway(focusing) its like a loud click, very mechanic sounding?
id say the x2 had a much better camera so far

allright coming from an iphone without autofocus so i didnt know that, cant remember the x2 i had for a week having that sound though.

Yeah. You have to turn on the LED in settings before it's usable. I've read that it's a limitation in 1.6 but I don't know really. Seems to work great on HTC Legend with 2.1 though.
Yeah, what is the flash like on the x10? Is there a flash????
theres no flash, only a constant light that will blind you!

I thought the camera in the X1 was pretty good actually but the one in the X10 is insanely great! The image stabilizer is just GREAT! I don't know how I could live without it with my X1! The image quality is great too!

No issues here either. My pictures come out crystal clear. Lay off the cocaine and your hands wont shake so much
mine is the same, has a white haze in any pic i take. i think it has something to do with the 2.1 builds.
Sent from my HTC Heroc using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
The HTC hero definitely has a poor quality camera. It is because the light sensor has trouble working too well in dark environments. Also, the shutter speed is very very slow, the slowest shutter speed of any digital camera i've ever used on any phone.
On 2.1(any rom) it seems the shutter speed is even slower. This is probably due to a bug in the 2.1 camera driver.
Take a picture on your HTC hero with 2.1 of something that's moving. I guarantee you it will be VERY blurry. Take it with 1.5, it will still be blurry, but not nearly so much.
Now take it with, for example, the droid. It will come out perfectly on the motorola droid running 2.1 with it's 5MP camera.
Megapixels don't equal quality level >> http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/mpmyth.htm
Pro tip: In camera, under settings, manually set ISO to 800. You'll get much better pictures. under 1.5 or 2.x the auto iso is crap.
If you still get lousy pics, check your lighting, and clean the camera lens cover.
If you STILL get lousy pics, take the phone back and get a refurb replacement.

What he said. I was almost as disappointed with the Hero camera as I was with the Moment. However if you set it to 800 and make sure you change the lighting manually too you can take pretty good pics. Not as good as we would all like, but still good.
ok hate to break it to ya but you are talking about a camera on a cell phone.
first just becuase it has 5 MP doesnt mean a dam thing I can get the same quality photo from a 2mp point and shoot as I can from my 24.5mp DSLR all the MP really mean is that you can enlarge the photo more without degredation.
second follow the instructions above they will gain you a few stops of shutter speed since being on auto probably keeps it at around 200-400 as that is normal native ISO.
after that go into settings and unless you are taking a bunch of photos of landscapes change your metering mode to center or spot if you are mainly taking photos of people then this is going to give you a better exposure of the person.
in my opinion this is why cell phones dont need these kinds of cameras on them. they give a more functional and customizable camera and instead of trying to understand basic camera functions people are just going to say "this camera is crap"

I agree. Not every idiot with a camera is a photographer. Mostly they're just idiots.
There's just no way around it, the Hero's camera is rather disappointing hardware wise, however it is on par with most other (lower end) cell phone cameras. It works for quick snapshots like it was designed, so I don't really complain.

Exactly. It is what it IS. It's not MEANT to take professional grade wedding photos...or photos that you plan to keep forever. It's meant for pictures to be shared on facebook, or flickr. More for social networking than 'hey, let's take all our vacation photos with the phone!'.

That is ridiculous. So what if i'm not a "professional" photographer. I STILL WANT high quality images when I DO decide to take a photo.
And guess what, the Motorola Droid, which is a cellphone if I am not mistaken..., can take pictures that are FAR higher quality than the HTC Hero.
The reason the hero's camera is so terrible is because of
1. The light sensor
2. Shutter speed
Now maybe I am wrong and the Droid really is a digital camera and that's why it is higher quality, but I have a feeling that HTC just put a ****ty camera on this phone...

Crappy Pictures....shutter is too slow

Hey guys, new here to Android and it millions of bells and whistles....
I have a question, the camera takes agreat pictures, provided that the camera and subject are perfectly still. Any type of movement and you are left with a blur.
I was wondering if this shutter speed is a hardware issue or software? If it's software, is there any patch or build that can be added to a temp rooted phone (VISIONary)?
Or a dumb question....is it a setting that I need to tweak???? right now it's all set to HD, superfine, yara yara yara....all the user settings are on max....
Thanks in advance.
I'm not sure if shutter speed is to blame at all. Seems like all the htc cameras frigging suck. I still have my old n97 and ill tell ya, its pics look way better than any htc android phone. I have an awesome point n shoot. But every now and then I have to use my phone, I don't walk around with my cybershot everywhere I go. I don't expect dslr like quality pics. But I think htc should read a page from nokias book.
I also hope there is a tweak for this. I love the G2 but my Vibrant was reigned supreme on everything picture related. Please let there be a fix, including even the samsung galaxy S camera app.

Wow really???? I tried the vibran, and the main reason I stayed away was because the camera sucked!!!1 and no Flash what gives????
The [email protected] IMHO is far superior taking pics than the vibrant, but neither trump the camera on my BB8900 with 3.2 MP. I over a thousand pics with that phone....some that have been enlarged to 8.5 x 11 and are hanging on my walls....I can't say that I see myself hanging anything taken with the G2...and that is very unfortunate!!!

Absolutely, the Vibrant camera and software is superior, the camera takes a picture immediately. The application is amazing with touch to focus and several quality presets (panorama sport burst, etc.) It does have a lack of flash which sucks but the night mode almost makes up for it. it feels like forever to take a picture with the G2. like OP said, if the subject of the picture moves within the shutter period, a big blur is the result.

dude I had a vibrant. Its camera takes much better pics than the g2. The vibrants video capture is much smoother and better detailed too. Its still not as good as my old n900 and n97.
I'd kill for a nokia branded android phone. I hope meego flops lol.
Also, I had a curve 8900 and a bold 9700. Worse cameras ever unless u were taking pics of documents. I can honestly say that those blackberrys pics were better than a g1 but no where near as nice as the vibrants.
My N1 took very crisp photos but even with little motion the G2 looks like crap there has to be a software fix for this

well now that u mention it, my n1 did take less blurry pics than my g2; but I think the g2's pics look a hair better as long as the subject doesn't move.
The day will come when nude chicks r jumping on a trampoline and I hope for the g2's sake that those pics wont come out blurry. Otherwise it may meet a blender lol
the G2 has the best camera i have used in a long time on a phone. i have had 6 phones this year alone and the G2 has the best camera out of all of them, and it has flash and a dedicated button on the side. vibrant was one of the phones i had in the past and the lack of flash and dedicated button really bugged me after a while. odds are once we get custom ROMs and CM6 there will be improvements on the camera including touch to focus(the only thing i liked about the vibrant)

From my experience, the pictures look quite bad when viewing them on the Xoom (via the gallery app), but once you offload them and look at them on the computer they look quite good. Do you have auto-focus turned on in the camera settings, and are you holding down the shutter long enough to let it focus? You may accidentally have the camera set to not focus or be in macro mode, which would lead to quite the blurry picture.
Offload some of ur pics onto a computer and see if they still seem blurry.
FWIW it seems like macro shots are the only ones that actually look half-decent on the Xoom itself.

Thanks for the suggestion. This actually shows the pictures clearly. Wonder whatsup with the stock Gallery app?
also keep in mind that a tablet is not the optimal platform for taking pics. Image stabilization, while good, cannot work miracles and the tablet form factor is not the easiest to hold steady while taking a pic....
Quality is just OK, my phone is far better for taking pictures.. I didn't expect much from a tablet anyways..

Camera and slow autofocus - LG support not aware of the problem

Hi everyone!
I've had my LG G2 for a week now and I'm mostly pleased about it - except for the camera's slow autofocus. It often takes 3-4 seconds from pressing the shooter to actually taking the photo. Only exception is in full daylight where the camera is good.
My old galaxy S3 is lightyears faster than this. I've contacted LG support and the told me to uninstall all other camera apps, force stop the lg camera app, clear data and try again, when that didn't work they had me do a hard reset which didn't help either. Finally they told me to return the phone for a servicecheck but I'm quite sure it's a software-issue. Plus the phone is rooted and they probably won't like that
How many others are having these problems and can someone confirm they have a G2 that doesn't take up 3-4 seconds to focus when not in complete daylight?
Cheers,
Peter

So you're saying using an app with 8MP changes the phones ability to autofocus? I've tried the nexus 5 camera - same result. Which app are you using?
Resolution should only matter in regards to how fast the camera is at storing the picture after the picture is taken (and the G2 is plenty fast).

So you're saying using an app with 8MP changes the phones ability to autofocus? I've tried the nexus 5 camera - same result. Which app are you using?
Resolution should only matter in regards to how fast the camera is at storing the picture after the picture is taken (and the G2 is plenty fast).

I'm just going to say he meant a real camera... This phone is 13MP anyhow. And, you are right.
+1 same problems here, slow autofocus and too long obturation time making blurry photos of moving subjects (child, eyes,....)
I also come from a galaxy s3 and for sure there is a difference....
I had a chat discuss with french lg team, saying to use flash........
the guy says to try other camera app from play store but he was pretty sure this will not help...
They did not give any reason to hope....
The mod 2.5.3 mentionned might help....but need root,
Furthermore conclusion is not that clear that it helps for indoor pictures of moving subjects...
LG is aware of the issue. They have said a software update will fix it. Customer service probably isn't allowed to acknowledge it.

I hope you're right! it would be nice with an official announcement although that'd probably be considered bad publicity
