How to back up and change roms without screwing up? - Legend General

Hi i just rooted my legend... was a hell of a ride because i encountered a lot of problems which most of noobs like me have encountered it while experimenting with the rooting process...
i was already stock OTA 2.2 with HBOOT 1.01...
Read several guides to get comfortable and prepared for the journey... in the end , i spent over 6 hrs to get it done... All the problems that ppl have been having boils down to the goldcard... i knew about it but never knew what to expect because in the downgrading step the gold card was not an issue and in the rooting process, it was!
im glad this part is over... i was able to flash the blayo's rom .
Now i feel like trying out new roms, so here's the questions:
1. I have TiBackUp PRO and the Free ROM Manager. Already backed up the Blayo's ROM
2. If i want to try the CM as so many others are doing to try Gingerbread... Is it a matter of going into ROM Manager and choose the CM versions?
3. How do i reload all my apps and settings without redoing everything manually?
4. If the CM is screwed up and doesnt boot, can i just go to recovery and flash a back up?
I just want to make sure i can try new roms without having to reset up all apps like wifi, gmail account...etc
Also, if the CM are buggy and doesnt allow my phone to booot if there is a way to reload my stable blayo rom?
Thanks

sorry i got no answer for you ... but the same think i want to try and i would like to know if and how is that possible ... to return on old rom with all app what we add Manuel . before we try new rom and did not like it..

h-e-a-v-e-n: Why did you even bother writing that?
QkSi1ver: nandroid is a part of your solution for you! That can backup and restore any ROM as a whole thing. Or you can restore only part (/system for instance...)
The other problem might not be solvable, as you will be going from one ROM to a whole differrent one...B08.4 and CM7 are completely different and I dare say no backup program will backup all apps and their data so it would work with such transition (tried Titanium, MyBackup and some other apps...) You can port contacts, messages, calendar evens, but you'd have to set up all you need.
Also there are programs that can batch-install your favorite apps, but you'd still have to set those up
Good luck with messing with it

Just counting posts
For QkSi1ver : I use "Tit..Backup and root " and I'm pleased with it
It can backup and restore " ... Whole app + data ..."
However u have to setup something like Google account and other manually ant to install TitBackup manually as well . Be sure whenever backup or restore to check " App+Data "
Finally the most important ( for me at least ) - the phonebook : I allways store it in my G--account . Good luck .
P.S. : At least u have a sheet of paper and a pencil for the phonenumbers an free time for setting up your phone again
It was a joke
P.S.2 : Be aware that some apps , backed up from one ROM may not work ( or even install ) properly to another , don't know why - should ask someone smarter

Thanks for all your response...
im just getting used to the ROm Manager and the CWM recovery that was installed through ROM Manager...
Correct me if i'm wrong.. if i happen to install onf oe the CM Nightlies and it doesnt boot into the OS, i would still be able to access the bootloader , into the CWM recovery which was intalled with ROM Manager and then load up my back up ROM from blayo right?

Right
Until you update to an uprooted ROM you should be able to access CWM recovery
An advice : use BlaY0's fake flash if you are S-on . It is smoother and easy to use

I thought FakeFlash has been renamed to ROM Manager and was one and the same (since both were written by the same dev right?)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=698404
If they are different, what does FakeFlash do that the ROM Manager CWM Recovery doesnt do? Can you point me to the appropriate thread?
Thanks
ps: Damn I'm running out of space... any advice regarding the ext partitionon sd... does it work like it make the OS believe i have more space?

Download this file , place it on the root of your SDcard and rename it to " update.zip " . Replace the existing one (if there is) .
About partitioning read this thread :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=907436
but I never had this problem so never needed to do this .
All I do is move personal ( downloaded ) apps to SDcard And I worry no more for the free space . At least I don't see why some buddys need so much free space .
I'm using BlaY0's B 0.8 and it is cofigured good enough to leave me a space on the machine .

igo (30MB), camera 360 (6mb), swype (5mb) ..etc it runs out pretty quick

" Titanium Backup and Root " has a batch that moves any app that you install ( beside the system ones ) onto SD card .

how do you update the radio rom??

Hi Folks.
Just been issued heros at work and wish to update the radio rom...How is this accomplished??
regards
Lohtse
Firstly it needs to have a recovery image installed I recommend Amon-Ra v 1.6.2.
Secondly you need to find the radio rom you wish to flash and put it onto the root of you phones sd card.
Thirdly enter the recovery image you have installed by holding power and home button from the phone being off.
Then select the radio.zip to flash.
Everything I have said here can easily be found how to do via searching this forum or its wiki.
also www.theunlockr.com will help with installing the recovery image.

First you will need to install the custom recovery console if you haven't done so already.
Then download your updated radio, put it on your SD, load into the recovery, then apply update. DONE!
If that is too brief,... let me know,...
EDIT... Ooops,... too late.
way to complicated...
Too much to do and can screw up..... At least with winmo and symbian was a few clicks...
hmmmmm think will ditch android.....
really? its not complicated at all when you know what your doing. In fact I can say its a damn sight easier (and safer) than modifying blackberry roms and from what I hear also Windows Mobile.

I came from wimo to android, and as it is said, it's quite hard to catch the thing at the beginning, but after everything seems easier than in wimo !! and more reliable... you have almost no chance to brick your hero after you installed the recovery boot.
radio : boot in recovery then select the good option.
rom : nandroid backup / install whatever rom you want / if you don't like it go for nandroid restore ( all you need is two Sd card.. the good one and the one for the "tests" ).... etc....
But at the beginning i was totally out but with a little time.. reading some posts (here and on the web) ... one day everything was more clear !

Its not hard at all. You can have the recovery installed and the radio updated in 5 minutes.
For step by step instructions follow the "Installing a recovery image" section in BTDAG's guide linked in my signature.
Then further down the same post, in the second yellow box there are instructions on "Updating your Radio".
Guys, the OP said he was issued the Hero at work, then two hours later said he was going to ditch Android... so what then, he's quitting his job? Troll alert. Don't feed the troll.
As to troll comment(yes offence has been caused)....hmmmmm.... Am going back to the trusty Kaiser... WE DON'T HAVE TO USE THE HERO.... We live in free(ish) world.. And the Phones are issued as an update to our old duty phones... Also I'm not the only one who uses them that feels the same.
Now to updating being easy. Gulp I must be eeer dum!!! Du hu Du HU must be the TROLL in me!
I have tried to install recovery image thing and well just cant get it to work... And now I find I have to root the hero too so things will install to sd card!!!! WTF this should all be standard like winmo and symbian etc...
I have been using smart phones since the Ericsson r380 and so far Android has failed to impress to the degree I am beginning to hate it....
Am far to used to having simply andfull access to everything..
Android is a HUGE learning curve that I suspect I may not have the patience for..
regards The TROLL sorry I mean Lohtse
Now I have finally managed to get recovery image on and updated the radio...Being called a troll did it !!!!!!.....LOL
My final questions are this how do I root so I can install to sd card(just point me in the right direction) And do I have to unlock Phone to any network to have custom roms on..

Wahey!!!! Good job man.
Ok,... So now you have the recovery image all you need to do is pick a custom ROM. Personally, I highly recommend MCR3.2 (link in signature at botom). It is an Android 1.5 ROM but is stable and fast, what more could you want for a work phone. This ROM is rooted and has apps2SD enabled. Once you have installed the ROM you will need to remember to create an ext2 partition on the SD card (easily done through the recovery). Then you are set to go!!!!

You're welcome And what ddotpatel said. MCR is fast & clean. By installing a custom recovery you've already done the only tricky bit.
Yep installed 3.2 from modocca. seems nice but how do you know if the apps are installing to sdcard???? I'm not sure they are lol..

You need to create an ext2 partition on your SD card through the recovery again. I cant remember the exact wording but something like "create ext2 + fat" or something along those lines.
As far as I know, once that has been done all apps will install to SD.
Someone with more knowhow than me correct me if I am wrong?... CAULI?,... LENNY?
Can someone who knows please answer this question:
Are you 100% sure that flashing the Radio ROM does not affect the phone RF Calibration ?
Thanks!

Yup, certainly as far as MCR is concerned. On the first reboot it will move all files from /data/app to /system/sd/app (& similarly for app-private) Nb /sysytem/sd is the mount point for the ext2 partition. All it does is move the files over & then replaces the /data/app (& app-private) directory with a symlink to the new location. That way future installs, updates etc all automatically go to the new location.
You can always check yourself with a terminal emulator & the command ls -l, or using a file manager like Root Explorer, if you're curious. Some people think it's not working because they see available space in internal flash drop as apps are installed, but that's because app data & the dalvik cache remain on internal flash, principally aiui for reasons of access speed. The saving you make just from shifting the apks to sd is more than enough for most people it seems.

A set of tables usually stored in NVRAM that takes into account the slight differences in the components used to build your phone. Every single phone is calibrated during manufacturing.
If the calibration is erased, it will look like it works but you can have all sort of problems from poor battery life to random drop from the network or poor sensibility (not to mention the higher than expected radio levels you could be emitting right next to your brain )

1, no such thing IMHO, if you want stable, stick to stock ROM
2, no
3, there are tuts telling you how to get it done in console, and, I don't recommend app2sd, slow like hell

Why wouldn't you run apps2sd? I've got the csdi roms with apps2sd and this thing is blazing fast. Besides, if you're going for apps with larger sizes, you're going to want apps2sd.
I find I'm OK with the 1.6 roms with Eclair bits. Don't need live wallpapers, and the Eclair bits have all the necessary things anyway. Personally I think the 1.6 roms are very stable at this point. Very few fcs and they're speedy.
fellows plz mention me the rom name ..i don't need live wallpapers coz it just slow the os and saying force close and what about 3d gallery coz i m not able to see the pics there..
@nmw407...mate plzz mention the rom name or i just need to unroot it and use 1.6
right?
i really recommend cyanogen. i stopped using it at 4.0.4. flashed every version he's ever made and i never really had good speed. this latest one is NICE, though, and i've hopped back on. for now. but i hear these CSDI ROMs are fast. just try any of them.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=448
just look for CSDI in the post title.
as for partitioning, i use amon_ra's recovery.
I've tried cyanogen, superD, and now I'm currently on sciencetest. All these have been very stable. For those starting out, cyanogen has the best step-by-step guide, however, it does require additional steps because he went legal. Some of the other 1.6 roms out there are one step roms.
Use amon-ra's recovery, partitioning sd cards have never been simpler. Much better than partition manager. I used to get read/write errors all the time with partition manager. With the latest amon-ra's recovery, you can pretty much do everything on the phone.
Just remember to nandroid/bart backup, and completely wipe before flashing a rom (again... super easy with amon-ra recovery.) Having a backup will save your life or at least some hair.
Right now using CaNNon202....but as as always its slow
CSDI is really fast and really reliable for me (not using apps2sd). I've had like 1 or 2 app crashes total, and I've been running it for the past month or so, so it's been a lot more stable than any other rom I've flashed previously.
Plus, you get a lot of options like customizing the number of columns in app drawer and number of home screens.
Go Cyanogen. v5 is on the way, which wont be a generic half-assed 2.1 port with reduced functionality.

[DEV's] OMG PLEASE .. For The Love Of God! - WE NEED A BACKUP PROGRAM!

I am Soooo Sick of re-installing Nand Roms ..
Try this .. nope it sucks .. try this .. nope that sucks ..

( Not Just The Programs - And Data )
So you can try different roms .. and go-back to one that kinda works! lol
( have tried sooo many that I wanna kill myself! - No I am No Kidding! )
I can not tell you how many times I have got a rom working 98% and
then install something .. or change just ONE setting ..
And BOOOOM .. It Doesnt work right ever again!

They Do Not Work Well .. And Do Not Backup All Settings And Files!
( Yes I know They Say They Do .. No They Don't )

We Need something very simple ..
Just like how DFT Team made it with MAGLDR 1.11
SIMPLE - Easy - Works Every Freaking Time!!
Something that makes (1) Img file that gets copied to the SD Card!
No Partions Ect. Crap .. Then you could just Flash it back
I am Looking for a Complete NAND Memory Backup Program more like ..
Acronis or Ghost That Does an Image of the complete Nand Memory.
Something Universal .. would not matter if you use NAND or ZIP Or > Whatever comes next! to install Android
I figure .. If we can backup using "clockwork" maybe it could not be that hard
to make a program .. that will Image the Nand from Sec. 0 - 99999.
I am trying to express my feelings and MANY others I have seen in other threads.
That we need a SIMPLE.. way to backup the ENTIRE NAND And Do A Restore.
Maybe a VERY Striped Down Ver Of Clockwork Of Some Type ..
And I Would Hit The DONATE Button ..
So Freaking Fast It Would Make Your Head Spin!
And I Am Sure MANY Others Would to!
I Am Hoping A DEV Or Someone WAY Smarter then All Of Us Will Make
A Program That Will Do this .. Thats What This Thread Is About ..
HELP! PLEASE HELP! OMG PLEASE ..
Before I Kill Myself! The Wife And Kids A Depending on you!
I don't see the difficulty of installing CWM, it's descripted nicely:
For new user;
1. download one of the partition files, if you don't know which one you need, use the 250M one or check with rom developer.
2. Extract downloaded zip to a folder of your choice
3. Copy contents of copy_to_sd_root (initrd.gz and zImage) to the root of your sd card
4. boot into magldr and select USB Flasher option while phone is connected to PC
5. Run DAF.exe included in the zip and follow onscreen instructions.
6. After complete, again boot into magldr and select "Boot AD SD" option
7. ClockworkMod recovery should load, you can flash a rom from here.
Click to collapse
Inside CWM, do a Nandroid backup and you're good.
Oh and Titanium backup works very well, you probably just don't know how to use it properly. Also, not all settings can be easily recovered among different ROMs, because, you know, the ROMs are different.
I haven't got time to follow every single [Tutorial] thread in here,
so don't know if there is a solution to back-up everything into 1 file (similar to *.ghost back-up file in Window).
Thus, +1 with the demand of WarLockW above

Right .. you can not .. use the settings .. Not thats the point of this ..
The Point is we need a easy way to backup CURRENT ROM .. and restore it.
Without having to do 1000 things that may or may not work.

Yeah, I don't really see any tool backing up a future or old ROM, cause you know, that's not possible. Nandroid is really just 1 thing, and it always works.

Where that goes is explained in step 3. Patience, young padawan. Which one you need is pointed out too: 250M, unless your rom dev told you to do otherwise. Having problems reading?
Why you need it? Because it's a necessary file, obviously. If you wouldn't need it, you wouldn't have to download it. I don't think you're after some technical in-depth analysis either, so just do as you're told. Easy, right?
( Were is that installed? - Why Do you need to do it ? - Does it Erase your Current Rom? )

Surprisingly, DAF.exe is in the zip file you just downloaded. Why do you need to do it? You're installing something here ffs, do you expect to magically install CWM without doing anything?
Yes it does, that's also mentioned in the thread.
6. After complete, again boot into magldr and select "Boot AD SD" option
7. ClockworkMod recovery should load, you can flash a rom from here.
( Have you Looked at the Menu's ? ) Hmmm .. Ok then ..
Click to collapse
Which menu's? Boot AD SD is indeed in the Magldr menu, flashing a zip is indeed in the CWM menu's. Yes, it's in a submenu.
Ok .. Or Run a program that has two Options ?
Backup .. Restore ..
Hmmm .. Wonder whats easier ?

Yeah, that would indeed be easier. So quit all the whining and use CWM, seriously.
can any one help?
I tried installing CWM using the tutorial show many times and get a load kernel error does anyone know what the problem is?

First of all you need to root your phone. Take a look in this thread and follow section 1.5. Instead of the recovery file suggested by the instruction, use the one from this thread. (Otherwise you won't be able to flash Gingerbread)
You have now rooted your phone and flashed a custom recovery program. Now you'r ready to choose a rom. I would suggest nFinityGB from arco. Just download the rom you like and put it on your SD card. Reboot your phone into recovery and DO A FULL BACKUP. Do a wipe/factory reset and flash the new rom (flash zip from sd card or something like that). Reboot the phone and have PATIENCE, the first start can take up to 5 to 10 minutes. Enjoy!
If you run in to any trouble, search! I can almost guarantee that your problem is not entirely new or unique, if it is; feel free to ask for help
yh nfinity gb is best man

There are development tools using here and all the thread - tutorial mentioned above are very good.
Did you download the android-sdk to get adb? If yes, you should go with the terminal in the platform-tools folder to launch adb.
im really get so sad ....... i was think i can found fun with my tattoo
C:\androidsdk\tools>adb devices
'adb' is not recognized as an in
operable program or batch file.

The memory is not the SD card space but the internal memory of the phone.
the internal phone space 150 mb
& the sd card space 1.83 Gb
that is what i found on the phone !
Use Universal Androot and ROM Manager much easier without PC
Sent from my HTC click using XDA Premium App
I have only encountered the "no space left" error once and that was when I missed a step in the manual rooting process. I didn't have any problem with the automated rooting tool mentioned in the FAQ and no problems at all when I did the manual rooting following each and every step carefully.
Sorry but I have know idea what causes the problem if you are following the instructions.
Andy, I've been reading about Androot and ROM Manager since you posted.
I have the standard 1.6 version from HTC, using Androot and ROM Manager I can use any of the rom's posted here in xda or do I need something else?
Did you rooted and flashed your tattoo this way?
Thanks

[TIP] New Galaxy S II, New to ANDROID & New to XDA do the following things

If your are new to ANDROID, XDA or if you bought new Galaxy S II (SGSII) or any android mobiles in general do the following steps first !!
especially when you ROOTED your SGSII
0. READ FORUM RULES !!
1. Search a lot in forum before trying anything & also use GOOGLE
2. Read full thread not the first one alone
3. Learn about basic android terms
4. Learn about firmwares & their versions ( for 3 & 4 => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723596 (post for Galaxy S but suits for most of android mobiles ) )
5. If you are going to root search properly & use the version for your firmware (ex. XWKF3)
6. As soon as u ROOT install Clockwork mod recovery / CWM / simply Clockworkmod (again install the version which suits yours)
7. Take an NANDROID backup / simply use backup action in CWM application & Backup your /EFS folder (this is not just copy/paste check this link => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1068193 )
8. Do a backup every time before modifying anything
9. Important of all keep atleast one NANDROID backup in your phone
10. If you forgot to do so or accidentally deleted it you can mount SD from clockwork recovery & copy it to /Clockworkmod/backup
11. u can also take backup from recovery mode (Stock recovery wont give backup option)
How to Root!!
mostly it ll be chainfire's thread
CF-Root Kernel basic ROOT that has to be done first
[19.10.2011][CF-Root 4.4] KE*, KF*, KG1/2/3/5/6/7, KH1/3/4, KI2/3/4/8 - su+bb+CWM4
As of now i remember only these important points ll update it regularly & am requesting all experienced users to add your tips here !!
Thank You All !!

because big fonts and different colours smacks of shouting to me and is almost as annoying as people using text speak
Good thread, IMO some of them are a little "wrong", but meh, whatever
3 and 4, you could tell us how to go about doing these things.
Also 5, you could tell us where to find information on these things as well.

Why for every rooted phone? For example I don't have installed the CWM, I don't need custom roms and I want to stay as much as stock as possible, I've only rooted. Do you have a reason to suggest CWM and nandroid for everyone?
I understand your enthusiasm, but you did not even mention making a back up of the EFS folder, which is the very first thing to do after rooting, when disseminating information, especially in that size font, disseminate correctly
Thanx for all your comments & Inputs !!

Rooted phones are susceptible to data corruptions & boot loops due to some root apps so obviously its safe to take backup !! even if u r hust installing Theme from UOT Kitchen !! we cant understand how chips/computers work so its better !!
