Issues with SII - Galaxy S II General

I got my SII just 2 days back. However its very good but there are few issues :
1) Battery is draining very fast.
2) WIFI signal is very weak. I am using SII just few meters away from router in apartment and signal is very weak. Earlier I used Nexus one and it was getting good signal with same router.
Also when screen locks Wifi goes to sleep and also on unlocking wifi is off most of times.
If there any fix for Wifi.
3) GPS is not at all accurate. I tried GPS from my appartment and it always show position fem kms away. Nexus one was showing accurate position.
Is there any fix for GPS?
4) Are there any custom images for SII available like CM for Nexus one ?
5) Can we root SII? How much safe is it root the SII? Is there any possibility in bricking the phone while rooting? What advantages will I get after rooting?
If you guys have any idea , please respond.
Thanks in advance.

This phone is brand new. There are no images for it yet [the dev community can only work with the phone once its released.. they're good, but not THAT good].
Read about rooting in the dev forum. Rooting gives you the ability to access and alter system files. If you don't know what you're doing, I'd suggest you not doing it. I'd especially warn against it since you don't know what you're doing and you don't want to ruin your rather expensive new toy. Once the tools are a bit more streamlined, go for it.
GPS problems are hit and miss. Consider yourself unlucky. See if you can arrange an exchange with the store you purchased the phone from.
Read the battery drain threads. You also may need to exchange. I haven't read enough about that, though.

So regarding battery and GPS , these are hardware specific problems or software?
Can these be fixed via software in future upgrades?

Wifi settings, menu button, advanced, wifi sleep policy, set to never. This is the proper setting and is better for battery life.
I don't know why android phones continue to come from the factory with this setting wrong like this.

From the GPS problems, it sounds like your device doesn't have a satellite lock yet and is using cellphone tower location. You could try turn on wifi location which will probably give you the usual instant location of your flat, or try wait a bit near a window for the device to pick up satellites.

your in a apartment building and your expecting to get a GPS lock?!?!

there is usually a range where i test my wifi connection to see if it works good or not in my home.
and GS2 is the only phone besides iphone 4 that managed to connect from that far away
i tried other iphones 4 and some of them wernt able to connect. or connect then disconnect. but my last iphone 4 never disconnects. and the same with my GS2.
who knows if i get another GS2 unit it might not connect. which makes me believe some devices are not as good/defective.
my brother's nexus S cant stay connected. it will be out of range for it.
so i think you have a problem with your wifi
i couldnt test my gps. i dont know how to test it. can someoen give me a code to test the gps ? i dont use it at all but its good to know that your phone is working lol..

a)
I live in a bunker and the GPS is accurate only to 10m. I never used the GPS outdoors and never got the satellite data, didn't enable the use of assisted GPS either.
I find this unacceptable. My GPS with AGPS and satellite data downloaded locked faster and is accurate to 9.9m !
b)
I live in new york and and like everyone (well, the 50 other signals i can see from my place) i've my wifi on channel 1. When everyone downloads i have very bad bandwidth. This is unacceptable. When I use my other phone at 4AM it goes faster!
c)
I report a problem cause while I saw 5 threads about it and how to fix it, I didn't bother to read them. Tell me how I should proceed. Please RESPOND NOW!
d)
I would like to root my phone but like for c), i didn't bother to read other posts. I want a personal response. With cherry on top. PLEASE RESPOND NOW!!!1
e)
Has iOS been ported yet? It's been a week it MUST be there. Else I bring the phone back. PLEASE HELP.
Seriously. Ever bothered to read the top topics? Don't even need to use search.

@bilboa1:
yeah, I second all of that, plus my phone can't make me coffee and watch the kids while I'm out binge drinking. surely that is a software problem! someone must look into it straight away.

No coffee either? I just took my SgS2 back to the store, it wouldnt let me play Call of Duty Black Ops, it refused to load the dishwasher, and then it had the nerve to ask for power?!! Really, what kind of phone is this? I'm going back to my iNoob! device

On a serious note
Hi Guys
on a serious note, and aside of what has been mentioned before. I had the SGS I before and i promised myself not to buy another samsung phone when i sold it. it might have worked well after you installed a custom ROM, but my experience was with official ROMs, and i am a firm believer that given the SH$$$T load of money a person pays for a high end phone, the damn thing should work out of the box
After all the hype about the SGS II and people claiming it is BLAZINGLY fast with no lag, and that the previous problems with the SGS I have been resolved, I am thinking on buying an SGS II but would like to ask guys with experience to answer this:
1- Has the lag problem been REALLY solved in this phone (EXT4 versus RFS), i have seen some guys reporting that pressing the home button takes around 3 seconds to close an application
2- Are there any deal breakers or have you noticed through your usage some major bugs
3- Are there any solid comparisons between the MALI 400 and the ADRENO 220 GPUs to show which one is better (yeah i am trying to compare the SGS II and the Sensation)
4- Everyone is reporting how good the screen is, do you recommend it or should i wait till 960x540 screens come out
5- how easy it is to connect the phone to the PC and sync your media/contacts/calendar
I am not a fan boy of any brand, just trying to make a good decision on which phone to buy since my money does not come easy
Thanks

For the first and only time on an internet forum, I feel compelled to use the language of the teenager.
Because, I am, literally....LOL
Thanks bilbao1 - made my day!

Everyone bashing his GPS issue, while I agree, he did says his nexus one DOES show accurate in his place. So if the galaxy is not matching same performance then there may be a problem.
Even with cell approximation, a few kilometers is too far away to be correct I think.

To my eyes there also appears to be slight color banding issues. On the o2 log on and log off screens its most prominent but you can also see it in the windmill live wallpaper screen shot below. Is this normal or have I been handed a lemon?

TBH: The screenshot doesn't do justice to the colour banding/ gradient issue. However Its very much apparent. Even more so on the dark grey background of the Neural Net Live wall paper. The effect is similar to having a 24bit/ 16 bit wall paper on a 65K colour display - gradient colur banding especially visible with grey/ blue gradients.

1 - the thing with Android is it is really unconstrained. extremely easy for anyone to mess their phone up by installing some software or enabling some stupid services. I can 99.9% confirm the lag is non-existent. The only place with "some" lag is widgets, but I think it is more related to how they are rendered. Now, if you install some crazy **** or just too many normal ****s, you could get lag.
2 - some MINOR kinks as always can be found. For example:
a) the Calendar widget - when you try to scroll through homescreens with this widget on one of them, it switches the day to whatever day you touched while scrolling the screen. It is like this widgets cannot see a swipe from a tap.
b) if you phone is locked you can long-press the power button to see the power-off menu, and in there you can disable/enable data to save power , but it just messes up the settings (if the screen is locked when you attempted it). I think this problem was present on SGS1 too , but not sure.
c) the wireless signal in my area (New York City) is crappy, I get annoyed with all those edge <-> gprs <-> 3g <-> H <-> H+ random switches throughout the day, depending on where I am within a small city block This is not phone's fault.
d) - could be more, just wrote down whatever I recalled. nothing major yet though.
4 - my screen is good. some people complain of issues with theirs though. Wait for high res or buy this one - it is really up to you. If I had a working SGS1 I would have waited for SGS2.5 that is supposedly out in the autumn.

you can't see that in a screenshot. screenshot does not take "exactly whats on your screen". it takes the software representation and that's that. the software represention is unique and never modified (unless you modify it by hand with photoshop etc of course).
it means if you show it on various screens you will always have a different result because no screen are equal (although calibrated ones have less difference, and very good ones makes it very hard to spot any difference, but the point remains)
the only way to "show" a bad effect from a bad screen would be to really picture the screen.

Yes, I do realize the problem here but I don't have a camera at the moment to take a picture of the screen.
However till such time I was wondering if any one can confirm if they see visible banding on screens with single color gradients like the neutral net wp background or the blue background of the o2 log screen?

Yes i couldn't agree more, the colour banding is much more apparent than it ever was on SGS 1....
looks like it is a 16bit colour screen or something... I was quite dissapointed by this as well

G2 Q&A

Anyone have some questions about it they'd like answered?
Is the trackpad illuminated? Trackpad isn't, but around it glows white every 30 seconds or so. On incoming calls it flashes.
How's the picture and video quality? Nothing amazing but I am not disappointed. The camera app is very responsive. Low-light pictures aren't that great and there are some obvious artifacts, but that's to be expected. Colors seem washed out in low-light, and slightly over-saturated and "blown out" in decent light. The flash is pretty bright and works well. Video is not bad at all but being a spoiled video encoder for the best video tracker on the internet, it's not as good as I'd like -- not that I expected it to be from a phone. On complex/action scenes it seems a little bitrate-starved. May be a limitation of the 3gp container or hardware -- I'm not sure.
720p Video:
Outdoors - Fairly impressed with how smooth it is. Had to cut the video short to avoid showing pooping action to the world (don't worry, entirely safe for work ).
Indoors - Same color issues as the camera, but really cannot complain. It's friggin' 720p video recording in my pocket.
How big is it? Slightly thinner than the G1. I honestly think it's a very reasonable size. It doesn't feel as thick since it's also wider. I don't see how anyone can complain about the size, but I'm also someone who's grown up using HTC QWERTY phones.
How fast is it? WOW. Of course, this is based on my use of the G1, but damn is it fast! Everything is as smooth as could be on Android. Not iPhone smooth, but it's more of an OS thing. I will report back with benchmarks after I wipe the G1 and install the latest CyanogenMod6 so it's a fair(ish) comparison.
How is the screen? Very nice. Crisp, bright, and the color is great. The screen feels a bit more plastic-ish than some other phones, but I'm not complaining. Doesn't feel cheap and isn't anything to worry about, honestly. It does attract fingerprints and smudges.
Is Swype pre-installed? Yes!
What else is pre-installed? Amazon MP3, Browser, Calculator, Calendar, Camera, Car Home, Clock, Contacts, Earth, Email, Facebook, Finance, Gallery, Gmail, Goggles, Google Search, Google Sky Map, Google Translate, Latitude, Listen, Maps, Market, Messaging, Music, My Account, My Device, My Tracks, Navigation, News and Weather, Phone, Photobucket, Places, Quick Keys, Quickoffice, Settings, Setup, Shopper, Talk, TTS Service Extended, Twitter, Voice, Voice Dialer, Voice Search, web2go, YouTube. I understand a lot of these are just basic Android apps, but that's the entire app tray. There is also Adobe Flash Player 10.1.
Is Adobe Flash installed? Yes.
How much memory? It comes with the 8gb MicroSD already installed, and reports 7.39GB free. Internal phone storage reports 1.23GB free.
How's the keyboard? Feels very nice and tactile, just the way your mother likes it. Will take me a little while to get used to after using the G1 for 2 years. Not only because it's a row shorter, but because a lot is moved relative to its location on the G1. For example: I keep pressing .com when I mean to press 'a'
How are voice actions? I honestly don't know if this is a new feature, but it is pretty darn nice. I can see it coming in handy when driving, assuming it doesn't pick up too much noise (my car isn't quiet ).
How loud is the speaker? Doesn't seem very loud. It's loud enough for most situations, but I surely wouldn't try using it in a noisy location. It sounds equally loud as the G1.
How is the signal strength? Honestly, seems about the same as my G1. I get full strength everywhere I had full strength, and have no signal in the same places (in my house, and in a huge building at work...).
How responsive? Very responsive. I've not noticed any lag no matter how many apps I have running. Pinch-zoom is always smooth. Scrolling long lists (200+ contacts, for example) is smooth. Anyone coming from a G1 will be extremely happy.
Battery life? Very good so far, but I haven't done a complete discharge cycle yet to make the meter more accurate. Compared to my G1, it's significantly better, but my G1 is 2 years old and the batteries do lose capacity. So far, I'm not worried at all. I'll report back after a couple days of use, although by then you all should have one
Is there a mystery hole (lol) for noise canceling by the speakerphone grill? I don't see any mystery hole. If the angle of light is just right, you can barely see where the sensors are to the left of the speaker grill. Maybe the earlier pictures were prototypes and the hole was for the sensors.
Can I hold the phone how I want? Heck yes. I'm sure if you do some funky death grip solely to prove you can hold it and lose some signal like some other companies like to do, that you could find a way to hold it and lose some signal. Normal use you will not have any issues and I can't find a way to hold it that would make it lose signal.
Does the LED change colors when charged? Yes, amber when charging and green when fully charged.
Does it come with a case? No. Only comes with a usb cable, headphones, and a usb wall charger.
Does the package require signature? Mine didn't. He walked to the door and handed me a padded envelope with the box in it and left.
Other notes:
- It will not update Google Goggles. Always says the update was unsuccessful.
- I don't understand the point of the "My Device" icon. It takes me to the same place as "My Account."
I think the biggest is the trackpad. Is there a light? And PS i hate u lol
Lucky you, I have a question, is there a light around the trackpad?

I'm kicking it old school with the G1
I was one of those impatiently waiting for the preorder to start, and of course had it preordered the first day.
I will take pictures and record some HD video, indoors and out. Fortunately the weather is nice today.
xile6 - not really sure what you're saying, but if I'm understanding you right I'll be putting the questions/answers at top to find them easily. This thread will only be around for a few hours anyway, since most others will get theirs tomorrow

Yes the track pad has a light around it. So far only one color. I have been using it for a day now. One issue is googles goggles won't update.... not really a big deal but that's one thing I've noticed. Coming from the Nexus its very similar so that's good. Size wise it is not that noticeably bigger but you can tell when you hold it. Swype comes stock. That's about all I have for now. Oh the slid mechanism feels pretty solid as well.

what about any lag? how is the browser scrolling? pinch and zoom lag? how about flash content? i heard it is hardware accelerated for flash content... ummmm how about the stock launcher in general is it smooth? i don't know about everyone else but i'm commin from a g1 and these were big issues with me. well minus the flash we had none lol. Also how about multi-tasking? music playing browsing at the same time.. need info pleeez lol
P.S. any cool new google app programs that we don't already have in froyo that you can notice? any issues with facebook or sync?

I'm really looking forward to upgrading to this phone when it launches in the UK
I'm sure I read a review a while ago that implied that, when using the multimedia dock, it was possible to wirekesslt stream media from locally networked storage. but I cannot find it now
is there any way you could test this?

Unfortunately, I don't have a WiFi network to test it over (I'm connected via LAN) on video.
However, I have already tried out this feature, called DLNA, and it works seamlessly with Windows Media Player. You simply set up a shared playlist in Windows Media Player and then click on the DLNA application on your Atrix while connected to the same WiFi network as the server (computer).
It works well. My only gripe is that the Atrix cannot play back .MKV files.
@Stunno
I found a stray WiFi network to use. Obviously, my computer wasn't connected, so I can't set up a playlist to stream.
But I took a screenshot of the DLNA application. Overall, fairly easy to set up.

Great stuff! Thanks for the reply, Kenneth! It's very much appreciated, any thoughts on whether it could access samba shares?
I have a TV upstairs in the bedroom, and rather than run an aerial wire to it I was going to buy something like a Revo and set up media streaming (I have a couple of TBs of DVD rips on a NAS) Then I saw the Atrix + multimedia dock and it all became so clear

Hmm. I'm not too familiar with Samba. Here's an official Motorola rundown of DLNA on the Atrix 4G:
https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/60673/p_country_code/US
Thanks again!
From the list on http://www.dlna.org/ it looks like my NAS is supported by DLNA, so, hopefully, I should be good to go!!
Now we just need Motorol;a to get their fingers out and release it over here!
Many thanks again Kenneth!

Many of the folks here are seeing average to below performance with the battery. But you have rated it as exceptional. Can you provide more details on your usage during those 16 hrs?
Nearly every topic you listed had negatives for the phone but you say its a solid device? Id give it 2/5 stars at best. Really disappointed.
The screen is horrible - cant even display yellow properly. Not to mention its pixelated and washed out.
Battery life is abysmal.
Really the only thing I found "good" with this phone, was the call quality.

Im quite sure the color issue is software related. This phone was rushed out the door, lets not forget. I also think the camera could be optimized better through software also. This phone is just an infant. If we can get some custom roms on it the future is sky high for this phone. Right now it feels like a beta.
I read your review and while it was thorough I do have one criticism, and it can be levied against pretty much anyone who has used an AMOLED device prior to the Atrix.
Everyone falls prey to the "Ohh shiny!" problem of the AMOLED screen. Oversaturated color is NOT accurate color. It's just like in big box retailers where they crank up the contrast and backlighting to make TVs "pop". My Blu-Ray player even has a "store" mode in the settings menu that turns on different lights and displays that aren't normally running just to draw your attention. If you had it setup that way at home you'd go insane (not to mention not being able to sleep from the light in the room). Just because it's bright and shiny does not mean that it's at all representative of the real world, and the average person just doesn't understand that.
Also, the picture you used in the screen portion of your review comparing the two phones has to do much more with the different screens' viewing angles than their perceived color reproduction accuracy.

Oh it doesn't feel like a beta maybe not polished but The Nexus S with 2.3 feels like a beta or RC;-)

I usually use the device every other minute while I'm in classes or at work. I surf the net, usually visiting my blog and other tech blogs. Then I check out Analytics applications. I also watched a full episode of The Daily Show during my test... which was the biggest drain (Flash over browser). I don't know how anyone could say battery life was terrible. Battery life on this device matches my iPhone... and it's better than the battery life on any of my past Android devices.

It might seem like every category was negative, because I was trying to be critical of the device and point out its flaws. You must remember that all of the categories are weighted more than others. Speed and processing power is more important than the lack of video codecs... for example.

Have you used the device? You really believe it feels beta? I'm pretty shocked to hear that. This thing is incredibly fast, efficient, and sleek. I'm loving it so far.

This is partly true. Over-saturated colors aren't accurate. It is also true that the angle of the picture makes the Atrix's colors look worse.
I did that angle for a reason. It was the only way that I could show how the two screens look side by side in true life. Every other time, the camera would balance the colors and the Atrix would look equal with the Captivate. The picture under the screen section is actually a very accurate view of the comparison between the two screens.

I understand the reason but it really provides a skewed view of the phone which is unfortunately a common problem in the media.
You must have a very sophisticated camera for it to compensate for different colors in different areas of an image. Mine (Canon Powershot S90) is only capable of adjusting white balance or hue/saturation/brightness/contrast over the whole of the image.

Canon Rebel T21. It's a friend's.
Not sure if it was balancing colors or if my lighting was just poor, but it wasn't communicating the major color difference when I took a straight shot.
I did include a straight shot with screens on in the gallery of pictures within the review FYI.
But, the color difference is much more dramatic in real life. Whites look more accurate on the Atrix. Other than that, blacks and ROYGBIV look way better on the Super AMOLED.
However, I would still buy this phone over the Captivate any day. The screen is still wonderful... and the resolution is useful.

My experience and negatives of SGS II

Hello XDA.
These are NOT MAJOR problems for me personally. The phone is brilliant, blazing fast. However if I had to pick out things I disliked/gripes these would be it. And will update if I or we happen to find more.

Hardware
- MicroSD and Sim slot has switched places from original SGS
Its more common to take the MicroSD out than the SIM card. Have to take the battery out just to insert/take out my MicroSD!!!
- Camera prone to scratches
The little platform that the camera is raised on is prone to scratches.Laying on a table the phone virtually rests on the camera lens! Comparing with the SGS the case takes the damage.
A good temporary way would be to stick a bit leftover from invisishield onto where the "8.0 MEGA" sign is and let that take the weight and scratches.

- Gap in Speaker
I don't know if you've noticed but there is a GIANT GAP between the slits of the cover and the internals underneath it. And unlike the SGS I. There is noway to reach inside it get get dirt/bits out. Is a big whole waiting to collect dust IMHO. :S
- Lack of Base comparing to the SGS I
I have to say the speakers on SGS II imho is not better than SGS I. Maybe there was a bit of compromise in the design?
On the original SGS you couldn't listen to it whilst on the table or sofa.
Now on the SGS II there is a massive gap between the outer chasis and the internal speaker inside so you can listen to music perfectly without any muffling when laid on a surface which is a GOOD THING. However there seems to be a real lack of base comparing with the SGS I.
- No cover for MicroUSB slot
Again dust prone. Why they took that feature out from the Original sgs I don't know.
- Did not come with USB2go or HDMI cable EDIT: Samsung Infuse 4G has a USB2Go adapter included in box!
I know they didn't advertise this as one of the strongest points but a little disappointed that it didn't come with it. I actually asked about this at CPW on launch day but the accessories were still all boxed up so couldn't take a look.
- Some people having problems with Screen
Pixel/Lines appearing and disapperaing. But looking at this forum and others only a minority/rare case and I personally don't have this problem on my SGS II.

Software
- Flash videos
Problems with BBC iPlayer, video stuttering. A faint mesh background when you watch any flash embedded videos using the stock browser.
TRY TESTING THIS YOURSELF. Play a video which has a white if not a bright coloured background.
- Menu Key vibration in Game Hub
It is excessively long and loud unlike any other hubs or just when you press the menu key.
- Low call volume when using personal head phones. CONFIRMED
yeah, I've noticed these things too... but since I wasn't an original sgs owner didn't think too much of it. I actually noticed the deep speaker gap when I saw something just inside.... had to fish it out with a toothpick?!

I don't like cases and I tried sticking the bits left out of my Invisishield screen protector onto the back cover but it doesn't seem to stick on...I was trying to stack a a neat circle of invisishield at the sides of the camera so when placed down on a desk/table it wouldn't scratch

Doesn't the camera has also gorilla glass?
Otherwise it is a big worry
My negatives so far are
* Flash videos are not smooth on BBC iPlayer, even using the official iPlayer app.
* Camera shutter noise cannot be disabled
* Some popular games are not working, NFS Shift, Dungeon Defenders etc
* No LED for email/sms notifications
* Phone vibrates loudly when fully charged - waking me up at 4 am

Not a problem i take sd card out once a year at most .

Odd that maybe they think wont attract dust as its on the bottom .
- USB2GO cable didn't come with the box!
Not expecting it to

Dunno. I bets not. Hope so but yeah, the glass edges mounted on the silver chrome is just waiting to get scratched! :S
@jgittins
Agree with the LED not having notification functions.
But the rest of the issues can be software-fixed and will improve in time e.g games compatibility. Remember the SGS II just came out. Like-wise maybe bbc iPlayer is not yet tailored for the SGS II. Strange though, my Carphonewarehouse phone did come with it installed. I'll check this out.
As for phone vibrating loud turn the vibration down in settings.
Camera shutter sound even on silent, yes I can confirm too that it is not working for me too. I'm on CPW (sim-free unlocked) firmware

yeah agree they are not major problems like I've said. I just tried focusing on the h/w problems which might be hard to change/alter unlike software problems.
The cable tbh I expected it to come with it.
The box is smaller than the Galaxy S which I applaud Samsung environmental/wasting less resources but for a 500Pounds phone...disappointed nonetheless.

Since screen is SAMOLED you can get an app to flash a couple of pixels with minimal power drain IIRC
RE the vibration, if it's annoying, I'll find a way to stop it by hacking the framework if required...
Hmm nothing really sticks out as bad or negative, personally just gripes.
Also annoyed by the SD card being ballache to remove, I'd prefer a external access port.
I'd prefer Samsung not stamping there name front and back, on the back would have been fine, I'm well aware of what i bought it doesn't need a f'in label.
Disappointed with the hotspot on the camera CCD. had this on the HD2, Desire etc.
I don't like the lack of a notification LED
The clicking of the hardware key sounds cheap IMHO.
16gb storage, hmm 2gb apps 2.5gb unaccounted for? 500mb Rom 500mb Rom backup? even at that rate, still missing 1.5gb ???
Battery life isn't what i hoped for, can't get anywhere near other users standby times
USB2GO not included nor HDMI lead?
all in all i am happy but a few adjustments and it would have been perfect, literally

Those two drawbacks are actually disturbing, as SGS has an option to disable shutter sound from within camera settings.
I also remember, that in previous, first Froyo firmwares for SGS it was also vibrating at night when charged.
Samsung fixed it with newer firmwares and this problem was gone.
I wouldn't worry about this just yet, I think those two maybe fixed in the future.

camera shutter noise is priority now I think.
Really strange usually U.K or Europe for that matter has the function to silent shutter noise when in silent/vibration mode for companies like Samsung, Nokia etc.

I'm actually glad they did this. People need to know that it is a Samsung phone and not a knock off of an iPhone most people believe it to be. The general public will be amazed with Super AMOLED plus therefore I think it was good Samsung to do this front and back. (IMHO)

I'm only going to refer to the 16GB part. I know that when I purchase ANY storage (hard drive, memory card) it is NEVER the full amount. Such as my 16GB micro SD card gives me around 14GB of space. Just like my 500GB hard drive is also in the 400 something GB range for usable space. It is just the nature of storage, you never get the full amount .
my personal negatives are:
1.no touch to focus on camera app.(it does work, my bad)
2.aliasing on web pages.
3.too many incompatible games.
4.no mhl cable bundled with the phone
that's all

i dont understand. original SGS had the vibrate issue when full, so they fixed it. they relesae the successor, and put the issue back in place? oh samsung you silly devil dogs, cant think things thru can they...kinda stupid.
My number one concern is bbc iplayer.
When I visit the iplayer website and play video it suffers from stuttering.
My second concern is white mesh on flash animations. Why cant the vectors be smooth like flash on the pc?

Galaxy S II

Hi, I was an andorid user and when i had one i loved it too bits then came windows phone 7 and im not going to lie i loved that more, however I am due a upgrade and the sheer power of the new andorid phones overpower windows phone 7 handsets and adter watching some youtube videos web browising is faster. However I have a few questions, would you recommened it? How is the batter life with e-mail updates constant/instant and few web browsing. My old android x8 had soem lag, has this now been sorted due to the power or is it jsut andorid os?
Thanks
Here's some things to consider with the SGS2. Some of what's listed effects different users to different degrees.
- Display
There's a band on the left side that seems discolored on a gray background at 20% brightness in the dark. Some see it in everyday use, some don't. I'd venture a guess that more don't or the hue and cry would be louder. If you're anal retentive about your display, check out the 60 page thread.
- Wi-Fi
Seems wonky for some users. It may be equipment specific (EG: router) or strangeness with a particular handset. There's a couple of threads running on that.
- 2G/3G/4G
There's some connectivity issues depending on what network you're on. Make sure your location and/or carrier aren't ones people may be having issues with.
- Audio
If you're an audiophile there's a couple of threads on audio performance which, due to a number of factors, has been deemed by pros to be below that of the original Galaxy.
- Camera
There's a bunch of threads on stills and video. Read them if you're a heavy camera user. Biggest issue now is a pink spot showing up photographing white backgrounds in natural light.
- Battery
Average at best. As things currently are, plan on 10-16 hours depending on how you use the phone. There's an issue in 2.3.3. that effects dual-core phones and Samsung's issuing an update to 2.3.4. any day now which is supposed to correct it.
Based on the way I (and only I) use the phone I'm very happy and the above issues either don't bother me or don't effect me. The phone's fast, the display is beautiful, and it's a great all around device. Compare your hot buttons to those of others and if you think you're good, by all means get the phone.
Don't forget the color banding, gradients don't appear smooth but look banded like they did in the 90's with 16 bit color

There's a thread on whether the phone's fully using its 24bit capabilities via the display. The theory is that when software is directly addressing the screen its fine. When drivers get involved it drops to 16bit. The same thing happened to the Nexus S and was fixed in 2.3.4. We're hoping the same thing happens.

Look, if your just using it as a device that can phone, text, take pics when you need that arent for a magazine or something, play some tunes whilst you are on the bus or whatever, do some modding if you are that way inclined then buy it. If you are fussy about anything like that find something else. People will always find problems with devices like this as they are used to better maybe or compare it to a device thats is specifically for playing music or taking photos. This is a great phone, best i have had and i am well pleased. Just my opinion anyway.
Im so tired of people summing up everyones experience. I have a sgs2 from first batch and I have none of the problems youll find on the first 2-3 pages of threads. Remember like the member above me said, people with complaint threads will post before a postive thread. Complaint threads will get the most attention and see the most post. There might be less then 10 members actually having the problem if you read through the thread.
Display: gradients on screen is really only not that noticable unless your anal. Only time I see it is when I open xda app(takes ages to load on brown screen) and others are seeing it on the intro to angry birds. Not while actually playing but the intro lol. Screen is beautiful and works 99.9% correctly.
Wifi: I have no issues with connection or speed. I download lost of big files daily. Mostly mixtapes and other files usually around a 100mb+. I get connection and my 15-20mbs download no matter where im at in my house.
2g/3g/4g/ My device stays connected through 3g all day. When im actually downloading or using data it switches in 1sec to H+. Real world usage is really fast in North florida but if im playing with speedtest apps I will get mixed reviews.
Audio- I start my music at work around 9am everyday. I work with loud ass dogs and other various animals on a daily basis. Never had a problem with audio coming through my handset and I use the included headphones. At 50% I can hear my audio over barking dogs. In my vehicle with my 2 12s and 1000w amp you can hear me from a block away. Easily matches my wifes iphone4 if not better with poweramps eq.
Camera- No issues here. Just getting back from short trips to jacksonville fl, orlando, and north georgia(mostly ATL) and no pink spots on my photos.
Battery life is all user to user. I myself have the luxury of charging my phone over night unlike others on the website. I can do my heavy using from 9-6 everyday and still have 30-50% when I get home. Music is always playing through headphones(9-6) 2 emails checking hourly, check xda 1000times, browse atleast 20 websites throughout the day and other numerous stuff and can make it home after a work day. If I was anal I could get 2days out of my phone before it actually dies. Remember with android most problems are User Error.
Unless you are in love with Sense, theres no phone that can match it until the next sgs comes out.

(Nexus One vs S2 @ "the Impossible Game" )
Do you think this is a normal IQ for a High End device like the S2?
As to Angry Birds 1 & Rio (and other games too) it is not only noticable in the intros my friend ... if you play them you will see !
Yeah I consider that not noticable in my book.
1st photo is a picture of the battery charging when phone is turned off if I'm correct. I don't stare at my screen when its just charging. In my real world use ill never see that long enough to annoy me.
2nd pic is when its connected to kies. When I actually use keis I'm not looking at the phone. I'm not saying its not there but the first 2 pics is not something I see daily. Im guessing the 3rd is a game but I don't play it. But the gradient is there.
I'm pretty sure I've heard its a software issue and not hardware. I find the pictures you posted funny. It shows me how hard it is to reproduce the gradients. But like I've said before I must have crap standards to accept a phone with imperfections. Can't believe I spent 700 on the best phone out to date.
To me this is a small issue that's resolved with a software update or one of the amazing devs come up with something. We don't have a ton of choices and I rather have gradients on a FEW screens vs what HTC is doing.
I understand that im a early adaptor of a device. Things may be changed/fixed in the next couple of months like nfc or something.

So your solution is to sum up yours and assume your individual device and personal expectations trump all? All hail the king.

Bugs!

Just to put this post in some context. I have been buying mobile phones since around 1988? I have owned most brands types with different OS the lot. I have never had a bug problem with ANY of my past mobiles including those from Samsung like the Nexus S, SGS11, SGS3, SG Note.
This is NOT a bash Samsung nor bash the Note3 post.
I purchased my Note 3 on the day of introduction to the market along with the Gear, 25 09 13. Since that time I have had to factory reset my Note FOUR times through ?Bugs?. First bug was the notification sound kept going off every few moments for 24 hours all night long. It nearly went through the window. Had to turn it off spend hours next day trying to find the cause, couldn't so I factory reinstalled the phone. All good for a week, then S-voice and this is the big bug, it keeps answering me even though its shut off!
All of a sudden it will speak to me and say it cant find what ever the conversation may be I am having at the time? Seems to have a complete mind of its own so much so my family have started to sit around the phone when we chat to allow the Note to partake? Its surreal. Factory reset twice and still the same.
I am also having other programmes open when I am not activating them. Several programmes also seem to have a mind of their own?
This is not me, thank God, I have yet to go completely gaga, my family are actually asking to set the phone down so we can see what its going to do next!
Would there be a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 exorcist available in the membership? Its gone from being annoying to a cause of much amusement for my family but its truly getting on my t1ts
Any suggestions, apart from burning it at the stake, would be welcomed. :cyclops:
Many thanks in advance.:good:
Kind regards
I havent experienced any of those problems. The only problem I have is the my magazine app keeps crashing.

I think you should return the device to a samsung service centre to swap phones, sound like you really have a bugged one, i bought mine within the same week and so far so good, no problems or hickups whatsoever. For me it's the 1st samsung device i am truly 100% happy with. (had the i9000/i9100/i9300/N7000/N7100 and now the N9005)
All of them had their own bad things, for example S1 had RFS filesystem lagsauce, S2 had EMMC brickbug like the Note1, S3 and note2 had the suddendeath bug and not to forget the AMOLED build quality on all phones.
Hope you get yours fixed/swapped for a good one.
I've had a couple problems with phone freezing, soft buttons not responding but I realized it was the app "Android Tuner" that caused it.
But without Android Tuner the phone works flawlessly like my other Samsung ones.
Sorry to hear about your problems though.
Runs fine here although I did disable some bloat including S Voice since I prefer Google's better.

It sounds like you have S Voice set to always listen which includes when the device is off. The SGS2 used to have this feature but it chugged battery. I like and use this feature, for example to call someone when my phone's sitting on my desk without having to pick it up until the person I'm calling picks up. If they don't I can leave a message via speakerphone. All without ever having touched the phone. This feature's return is Samsung's answer to LG's Knock On.
I have S-voice deactivated so it cannot function yet it does?
My family find this hilarious. I was in the rest room this evening sitting on the loo, to be blunt I began with wind and the bloody deactivated S-voice asked me to repeat what I had said as she didn't catch that and then asked if I wanted it to look for Pruuup on Google! I swore at the phones (sorry about the lack of self control) and S-voice told me to calm down! THIS IS ridiculous.
My grandson now wants to play with the darn thing and I find him having a conversation with this lady known as S-voice.
I shall well be in the dog house if I do manage to resolve this most annoying and very peculiar problem!:silly:
I repeat the S-voice is not even turned on. I actually found myself looking this evening in the loo for hidden cameras expecting to find myself on some TV, 'You have been had' sort of game. What began as odd turned to rather humorous, now I am talking to some lady on a mobile phone who is telling me to keep calm. Any one know the phone number of the FBI? I think I have been bugged?
Hey I could write a book and it could be made into a film. The phone that came to life and.....Oh dear......I might not like the ending
I have looked in the mirror and psychoanalysed myself and I appear as bonkers as 'normal', nothing new....What on earth can be doing this?
I dare not return it to the store as no one will believe me unless my family are at my side and they like the mobile as it is. The other point that worries me is should I take it back and the phone behaves itself I could find myself being carted away by two men in white coats for a psychiatric evaluation? Knowing my luck S-voice lady, she would keep stum until I was discharged then chuckle at me as I walked away from the fruit and nut ward!:silly:

You mentioned you have a Gear. It uses the phone's S Voice app to function. When a Gear's connected I don't know if you can fully disable S Voice on the phone. I occasionally get "microphone in use by another application" errors on both the phone and Gear so mic control between the two isn't perfect yet. Maybe that's related to your issue.

Yes I have the Gear. Oddly enough (to date) this S-voice situation only occurs when my Gear is turned OFF? If I use the gear the problem goes?
Thanks for mentioning that even though I still have no idea what to do about it.
I wonder if Stephen King would like to buy a mobile?

There have been two updates to Gear Manager. The last one really improved the connection between the phone and the Gear. Make sure you update to it. Also, hard reset your Gear before connecting it to the updated Gear Manager. All your apps and settings on the Gear will be restored. Hopefully that'll cure your haunted setup.
Telus Note 3 user here
I can tell you that I have tested all apps thoroughly and I have had absolutely No issues from day one fresh out of the box.
Stays cool and battery goes long. I downloaded multiple apps too from the Play Store, No problems at all so far.
I am planning to root after a while.

Lol, now before you go writing books on how the Note 3 is a failure, it really does sound like your specific phone is messed up. You can keep trying to fix it but it'll probably still mess up in some way.
And I'm pretty sure they'd believe you if you brought it in and it acted fine. But they'll probably just factory reset it. They think that's the answer to everything. Not sure of your carrier, but with Verizon I just have to call in and they'll troubleshoot it, and if it still doesn't work they send a replacement. And since the phone is still new it should be a new phone and not just a refurb.
Bring to service center. End of story.
Your issues is rare, some spirit inside the phone.
Best Device so Far
Hello all,
Am glad to be part of the Note3 N-9005 crew
coming from my good ol' GT-I9100 S2, which hardly had anything working wrong. I hardly had any trouble with my S2, no brickbug, etc, always kept testing new ROMs.
Now the Note3 seems more like an upgrade, an upgrade in terms of stability, power, RAM, and android power. plus the S Pen of course.
Having used it for like 2 weeks now, I am a hard user - I have seen no issues whatsoever till now. The phone works and flies flawlessly across apps when multitasking, switching to and fro S Pen is seamless. even the fast charge takes least time to charge the device till full.
So all in all, I find this is a very stable, very fast and better than any iOS spawns.
Regards and enjoy this phone

Not to offend but wondering what kind of phones did OP use before Note 3.

I am as surprised ad baffled as you are. I wrote in my opening remarks that this is THE first phone, form any brand since 1988, I have ever owned that has had a problem including numerous Samsung's in the past three years. Guess its just my turn. EVERY device makes a lemon on times. This is to be expected.
If I keep the gear on the problem goes with regard the S-voice. I have yet again, for the fifth time, reset to factory settings today and lets see what happens. If it plays up again I will take it back and see what can be done. problem is in doing that the store just send all such devices back to Samsung's repair representative and I would be without the phone for maybe a month. After sales in this country is abysmal and getting worse as the financial crisis bites even deeper here.
I shall press on for now and see what happens.:good:
Regards.
Sync issues
Hi all,
I am experiencing this wierd bug on my note 3 with syncing of my google account. Device automatically disables sync for few of my google apps like Drive, Gmail, Calendar. Even if I enable sync, after a few hours the sync itself disables. Please note that this issue is not for all of my google apps, for eg. chrome and other google apps dont have this issue.
Does anyone know if something I should enable or do somewhere to resolve this annoyance?
Thanks
