GT 10.1 was given on google IO - Galaxy Tab 10.1 General

http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/10/samsung-galaxy-tab-10-1-launching-in-about-a-month-google-giv/
Does this mean GT 10.1 actually becomes google supported device, instead of Xoom?

They gave out EVOs lastyear, so probably no, its just a giveaway, probably want more people to develop for honeycomb

The question is if they are allowed to sell them. (will check ebay soon)
According to googles keynote it doesn't seem like there will be anymore google devices. They are trying to get everyone to partner up and support all devices within the same time frame.

Just checked ebay, they are going for over $1000, I am pretty impatient, but I think I can wait the month or so.

According to Andy Rubin, there will continue to be Nexus devices.

Hopefully we will get an end to the "What SoC will the new Tab's come with" question very soon!

I've already asked on a couple of gadget sites.

my guess would be tegra2. As much as I would want the exynos, I don't think samsung is going to give up on the tegra games. A lot of people are going to want to play tegra games on their device, and barely any of those people are really going to notice the difference between the tegra2 and the exynos.

are you kidding me?
Samsung could sell the 10.1 as a standout tablet!

People on CL in my area are already posting for 800-1k. I emailed a few sellers asking if it has a microSD slot & which CPU is it. Was curious on this.

Standout to whom? To people like us that care about the benchmark difference between the two? There are not enough of us for Samsung to care. They would rather please the masses and let them play the Tegra games that are out there. Don't blame Samsung blame Nvidia for locking their games.

I got one today at I/O. No SD card, no SIM card slot, and it has the Tegra 2. I noticed that Fruit Ninja THD lags like crazy whereas on the Xoom it doesn't. So I don't know what sucks about it, but the graphics performance is poor. Possible?

they also gave out this redemption card for a "Verizon Mobile Hotspot & SIM card" courtesy of Samsung & Verizon.. not sure what that SIM card is for since there's no slot for it..
EDIT: n/m!! didn't realize the mobile hotspot devices required a sim card!

The SD card slot probably hidden somewhere, underneath cover?
Engadget said this is LTE enabled.
Sim slot must be present.

I think the issue for that is more about the service(Nvidia not letting others use the service), not that the games couldn't run on exynos.
For me that doesn't mean anything as my gaming on mobile devices starts and ends to Angry Birds, Bejeweled.
It's the video playback i want.

I do not think so...
It is not like they are giving away those games.
I suppose every one can access, pay and download but... (here is where Nvidia marketing talki will come in) " only with Tegra 2 we can guarantee best performance and user experience - Nvidia: the way it meant to be played"
Hell..i if you are some one who writes a game you want it to work on all platforms and tablets - Tegra 2, iPad 2, Exynos, TI, Qualcomm, etc...
But... I might be wrong on this.... either way - I am not much into games on other platforms than PC.

I really need Samsung to clarify the sd card slot issue to clear up the confusion.

Thinking of buying Galaxy Tab

Heyy,
Im a huggeee android fan n was looking forward to getting an android tablet next month...before buyin i wanted to ask some questions regarding the tablet.
1. Will it get honeycomb update? Is the hardware powerful or outdated to the dual core chips?
2. How is the video calling on it? Which software can i use for Video chatting on PC and tablet?
3. Is there any other alternative tablet better than this? Is it gonna be outdated in a few months due to the hardware??
4. Can I put custom Roms in it? Or its not possible?
Thanksss

Then I'd say wait it out.
If you're a huge Android fan you'd already have a Tab!
My advise is, if you can wait, wait. Personally, i've been waiting a long time for a decent Android tablet - I even bought a cheap chinese iRobot, and had a Huawei S7 on preorder (cancelled when the shipping date kept slipping).
So far, the Tab has exceeded my expectations for an Android tablet, given that the OS is supposedly "not optimized" for tablets, which is a phrase that many reviews have used, but few (if any) have actually demonstrated due to incredibly lazy journalism.

Dave

Indeed! Just look at the comments in most of the reviews, and this invariably crops up time and time again from people who haven't even tried the Tab!
When an iPad displays an iPhone app in a "window", it's a feature of the OS that allows the tablet to take advantage of the iPhone ecosystem, yet when the Tab does the same for Android apps it's because the OS is "not optimized" for tablets.
Got to love those reviews that say that Android doesn't support the Tab's native resolution, when in actuality it supports any resolution and a well-coded app can take advantage of it. All because it's not an "official" Market resolution, which Google could "fix" by just saying that it is so!

Dave

I've been a long time WM fan, but just got a Tab about an hour ago! cant wait to try it out properly! i used a demo at carphone warehouse and it is the ideal android device, its very quick! im new to the android world so i dont know much. but i highly recommend it!
Thanks for the help guys....i know the OS its not optimized for the device but will it support gingerbread and honeycomb or the processor is too weak for that?
Also will it support custom roms like cyanogen?

1. Will it get honeycomb update? Is the hardware powerful or outdated to the dual core chips?
The 1ghz Hummingbird and PowerVR 540GX GPU is the most powerful single core SOC on the market right now, and it's arguably competive or superior to the Tegra 2 in graphics performance as well. It can handle 2.3 just fine, and should be good for 2.4 or whatever version number Honeycomb gets as well. Nobody can answer if Samsung will support it, but the community should have all the tools to do so as well.
2. How is the video calling on it? Which software can i use for Video chatting on PC and tablet?
Video calling is ok to good, same as any mobile device, but with BIGGER FACES. Qik, Tango, Fring and Skype are your current choices for software. All work best on WiFi, obviously
3. Is there any other alternative tablet better than this? Is it gonna be outdated in a few months due to the hardware??
There's no REAL alternative at the moment. There's a lot of lesser alternatives (no phone, no GPS, lower quality materials, lower resolution, etc), but nothing better in this form factor. In the mobile electronics world, there's always something better coming.
4. Can I put custom Roms in it? Or its not possible?
In time, you can, because Samsung didn't lock the bootloader and they've released the source code for all the shipping variants. Just keepin mind that no Android device has custom ROM support right out of the gate, not even the vaunted Nexus One. It takes time, multiplied by sales. I should also mention that the Tab has sold nearly as many units as the Nexus One, if the reports are accurate.

[Q] How do you actually install / insert a SD card?

I know that the SD slot isn't supported yet, but has anyone figured out how to actually put a card in? I see the little door at the top but it doesn't seem to want to pry open.
I just want a place to store my card while I wait for it to be enabled by moto.
Under that door is where the micro-sd goes. But do not store it in there. Do not put it in the Xoom until it has been enabled. There is a clear placeholder in there that specifically tells you not to insert a micro-sd until the update has been released.
Slide out the tray from the top of the Xoom, the space supports both a SIM card and a Micro SD card. You'll see plastic placeholders for both.

I was just about to start a thread to ask about this, but I think this is the loaded question right now, I went over to the Motorola support page and its just a bunch of angry people over there spewing hate.
I hope Motorola really has a solution by that time just to be competitive with the Ipad2 and the new upcoming tablets, but it looks like to me not many of the other new tablets are even coming with the SD card slots, so it would definitely be an advantage for the xoom to get it rolling

What I don't get is why this is such a bad thing... The Xoom is entirely usable as is, for the same things (with the exception of, say, Netflix support) as its primary competition. Given the release of Flash yesterday, which isn't perfect but is entirely usable, the Xoom does arguably quite a bit more than the iPad 2.
So, why wouldn't Motorola release it? Personally, I'm enjoying the heck out of it, and am quite happy to have it now rather than waiting. Here's how I see it: Apple gets credit for releasing a "feature-complete" product that actually just has fewer features, while Motorola gets slammed for producing a device that will have more features, but they're just not yet enabled.
I don't understand why people can't see that getting Flash, SD card support, and 4G at some point is better than never getting Flash, SD card support, and 4G at all.

This is a Google issue. Honeycomb doesn't currently support expandable memory. Google has said it will be supported in the future, that's why the microSD slot is there. This isn't Moto's fault.

Hell yeah.
Ipad2 comes out with what? one new thing, 2nd cam. The xoom as is rocks. yes its unstable in some cases and not all the features work yet but lets look at the ipad2. It seems like a replica of the ipad1 with 2x cores and 2x cams. when the ipad cam out alot of apps didnt load correctly. not all the features were working. Since the Ipad2 is pretty much the same thing alot of those "new-tech" issues are not present. Xoom will need some time to work out some bugs and we will get the updates in time.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 V Tegra 3 Device

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 OR Wait for Tegra Three devices?
I would also allow for you to suggest other devices but please only android and please only 10 inch tablets.
Also the new tegra three devices might not be as thin or good-looking as the samsung which i really care about.
The only reason i like tegra is because of the support it has in the android app developing community so please try to keep the suggestions to tegra devices unless you have a good reason to contradict it.
This is simple for me.
If you can wait, wait.
If not go for it.
I couldn't wait
If you can wait, it means you will NEVER buy a device lol. When Tegra 3 devices come out, Tegra 4 will be announced. I passed on the galaxy tab to wait for a tegra 2 device and now I hear nvidias "Kal-El" quad core. **** it! I'm going for the Gtab!
lol might as well buy the Samsung now and then sell it once the new one you like comes out. But its true, do you really want to keep waiting? Not I, I'm jumping on June 8th.
Personally I would get one now. You can play the waiting game and never get one as there is always a better one around the corner. You can of course wait but I suspect that you won’t see many better or 4 core tablets announced until CES 2012 next year.

No, if you can wait, it means.... you can wait! I don't know about the rest of you, but I've lived my life just fine without a table. It will be a cool toy to have, but I don't NEED one. Tech gadgets are always progressing, but the tablet market is currently moving at a very fast pace. Tegra 3 is supposed to be out later this year, and is supposed to be 5x the performance. That's a much more significant performance/time ratio than other more "mature" tech products. If you can wait, then there's certainly something to be said for jumping on when the curve flattens out a little. What I do will depend a lot on pricing.
i think it's worth waiting... tegra3 pre production chips allready shipped to manyfacturers, mass production starts around august. motorola and probably asus will be releasing products short after ( promising releases before back-to-school time )
this means that you can, in theory, own a quad core beast in within 3 to 4 months months...
and they are realy fast, throw your pc and your mediaplayers out of the window and start using your tablet instead
perhaps you can invest in a program like best buy's buy back program, so when something new comes out, you can trade in your old and get the new for cheap

If you pay attention to the market it doesn't look that way. I personally think we wont see anything better then whats out now until next year. Most of these company's still need to make money off the products that are currently on the market.
Take Samsung for example, think of the time and money that has been spent building and promoting their new tablets around the world. I really don't see them coming out with any new tablets at the end of the year even if they had the new teleology. they first need to make a profit.

Asus, Motorola, and Amazon (and probably others) are all rumored to have Tegra 3 tablets by the end of the year. You can't make much money off of the products you currently have on the market if they are obsoleted by new products your competitors are offering.
I'm going to revise my initial answer.
If you're asking the question "Should I wait?". You should wait.
After the iPad released last year, I started trying to imagine, what exactly I would use a tablet for. Once I was a bit settled on what I wanted to do with it, I started looking for something that would match my needs.
When the 10.1v was announced I realised it was a match and I eagerly went after it.
Maybe you should wait until you are certain that the tablet you are buying is a match for your requirements.

I run the 10.1v and love it.
Things it is:
-light
-sexy (please no 3.5mm jokes)
-brilliant batery (i charge it each night but it only gets down to 30-50% after full day of use)
-netbook replacment (people will argue this but i haven't found a netbook more fun then this, and you can put debian on it )
-casual gaming (not sure of anything on the market you cannotplay onit except porley designed games that are just tiny boxs)
Things it isn't:
-high def cinema (you can run standard def fine and it looks great but if you are obsesd with 720P wait)
-ipad (yer thats a pritty good reason )
-high end device (tegra 2 is fun and all but nexus s still out performes all tegra 2 devices so if you want the bigest and best wait for qualcomm)
In conclusion if you want a great device that doesn't need to be compared to a PC (which i hate that thats were we uave goten in tablets) then go pick one up, but if your after a device that you want to luanch thermal nucular war with wait for qualcomm.

I was really looking forward to GT10.1 but no luck.
It has Tegra 2 inside which is no good for me and has no sd slot which is also no good for me.
I do want a tablet like this but I do have a purpose in getting one - it has to replace my netbook.
Meaning I want to watch 720p mkv without re encoding, netflix, etc...
So far non of the tablets (including iPad2) can do what I want.
If I would be to take one now just to have it Asus Transformer seems like a better choice.
There is an sd slot on it, there is a great dock with batt. for it and looks like it will be/is cheaper.

Returning Xoom

I'm returning my Xoom, and I'd just like to thank all the devs for their hard work. I'm returning it since I'm not very happy with what Motorola's doing, with (still) no working SDCard. I know Tiamat does that, but my Xoom just ate up an SDCard Also, I'm not as impressed with Tegra 2 as I thought I would be, so that's basically why.
Thanks.
Are you planning on getting a different tablet now?
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Definitely, but not now. I'm probably getting something Tegra 3, which is coming out probably in a few months. Also, I'm sorta mad at Google for not releasing Honeycomb Source, which severely hinders what we can do with development. I know that it isn't the fault of the devs; hell, we still got BRD's rom, but we didn't get as much development as I thought.
Well asus seem to have released 3.1 code so im not sure it's Google's fault ?

That's the kernel source, which Asus have to supply as it is GPL code.
It isn't the Honeycomb source.

I also really loved the Motorola Xoom, but with it not officially supporting the microSD card I exchanged it and got the SGT 10. So far I really liking the SGT 10 feel and though it doesn't have some of the features I had on the Xoom or a MicroSD card slot. I will be keeping the SGT 10 as my 10" tablet.
Im also be selling mine. Its not about motorola that im dissapointed. its honeycomb. It just seems like no dev cares about it, not even google update theyre own apps to honeycomb. The market place for honeycomb is broken since day 1. Apps that i was interested in are region locked...(books,earth,maps navigation, video).
I was happy with my android phone even with 2.1 because apps that i like worked fine.Thats why i thought buying an android tablet with the latest firmware will be my next step but i was wrong.
At first i didnt like the ipad (it just looks like a big ipod) but they have apps that works, no region lock on books, music, videos , the game library is interesting... all those things that i forgot why did i choose android.

After using the Galaxy Tab 10.1 my appreciation for the XOOM has increased tremendously. For whatever reason, the XOOM is smoother and more responsive - significantly so. Everything about the XOOM from build quality, to SD slot (at least it has one that can be made to work) seems better to me on the XOOM. And charging times on my GTAB 10.1 are horrific. I spend more time charging it than using it.
Oh, and something a lot of people seem not to have considered: for movie playback you are locked into the 4GB limit again with the GTAB 10.1 which means you are forced to limit the bit rate of your movies to make them fit. You can use as high a bit rate as you want on the XOOM as long as you store your movie on internal storage which has no 4GB limit. This means that many of the movies that you converted for your XOOM may not be usable on the GTAB 10.1 if they exceeded 4GB and you may be forced to re-encode them.
Only major advantage with the GTAB 10.1 is the screen, and to lesser degree the weight - and honeslty, unless you're an absolute movie buff, the XOOM screen is pretty good despite all the criticism.
I think a lot of the complaining is an excuse to aquire a new toy.
No, I won't be getting the Asus or the Samsung, mostly for the same reasons as why I'm returning my Xoom. It's mainly because I'm not happy with Tegra 2 (that Samsung Exynos is pretty awesome IIRC) and that it's worth the wait of maybe 3 months.

No argument here. Tegra 2 is so bad it has made me re-think my choice of graphics processor in my PC - makes me start to doubt NVIDIA's quality in other devices. Just hope Kal El isn't another disaster. Really wish there were more choices. I think if Samsung had gone with Exynos and an SD slot, it would have swept the market. Ironically, they may have stuck with Tegra so they could support Tegra games and Netflix DRM. And we still haven't gotten Netflix anyway.

Well there isn't many other choices atm for those who want a tablet NOW. I'm thinking about selling mine for $400 around Christmas for a newer tablet. My next tablet will atleast have the ability to play any video file I throw at it without conversion.

I hope you like your new tablet, but this makes no sense. How does returning a device because it doesn't have support for thesd card help if you replace it with a device that doesn't have an sd card slot?
That's kinda like cutting off your feet because your shoes don't fit.

Lack of games
Try throwing 720p anime/movies on any t2 tablet..
I have a xoom and love it but I can't turn a blind eye to the issues that it has.
I love my xoom, and it does what I expected it to do when I bought it. Does Motorola suck at software updates, yes. We all knew this from any other moto phone. That's why Google is good. Also, I have never noticed a shortage of devs on xoom. On games, well I have patience, there are more and more cool games released every day. The screen, well it is not perfect, but capable, same as the tegra chip.
So in short, I see how some may be disappointed, but in all reality, they shouldn't be. (unless they were not very smart and bought a 4g tablet, then you have every right to be disappointed about the lack of an upgrade)

gotta return mines by July 11th, really gonna miss it and the developers have been the only reason i kept it this long. I'm sure their strong work is the reason many have held on to the Xoom.

The only valid argument in this thread about returning a xoom is the lack of support for other country with many google service, and this is not google fault it's company who are enforcing drm to the limit.
As for the sd issue, it will get fixed soon, I can understand an early adopter to be pissed off but if he managed to wait until now it's a matter of week now.
out of topic but I have a panasonic blue ray that have netflix installed, but it doesn't work in my country, can you believe this...
The screen on my unit is quite nice, not sure why some people complain.. so far I am happy with the xoom so I keep it, I have a 3 month return windows with costco, I will evaluate my option by then but so far it's a keeper!

Atrix 3 on the horizon (?) . Update: Fake.

Just read this from Android central.

If true, I look forward to jumping from Tegra 2 to 3!
(Crosses fingers...please have unlockable bootloader..)

Update. Fake rumor http://briefmobile.com/motorola-atrix-3-rumor-isnt-real-we-wish-it-was
Access denied trying to view that page. I also like the jump. I feel like the atrix 2 was a major let down, it also didnt get a lot of attention from the carrier and marketing wise, hopefully the 3 is much improved.
And it should have an FP scanner as well
I don't know if I really should buy something from MOTO again.
But I never ever buy an Android phone without testing it.
Things like 1080p playback, USB stability, stability in general and of course an open bootloader are more important for me than great hardware specs.
I want more stability!
Use the fuc...... hardware this time!
But the Atrix 3 looks really well.
Hope that MOTO learned from their stupid decisions...

Nice, Tegra 3 is the future.
I was disapointed to not see Tegra in the Atrix 2, thought Moto gave up on nvidia.

Color me skeptical. The photos look like someone took an Atrix 4G and slapped some crude signs next to them. Notice that there's nothing on the display itself, just a blank screen. It may be legit, but like the article said, it could be a fake, so I'm not putting any stock in it until there's confirmation.
This phone is worth getting if our amazing devs move to it. But spec wise looks promising

Its too late for me. A Sony phone or galaxy s3 for me. The unlocked bootloaders from the beginning attracts all kinds and a lot of devs. Plus Samsung encourages custom ROMS. They're getting to be a better OEM since the galaxy s2 line. Shoot, there's an ICS ROM leak for a couple of American galaxy s2 phones as we speak! When is some of Motorola's phone's update? Q3...

Wow whatta fail. Android Central is usually the last place I get my android news but this rumor seemed a bit intriguing. Oh well...maybe a samsung will be next for me.

2gb ram would be nice but that just means more likely not happening.
We've been stuck at this 1gb ram for a while now....

What the hell am I going to do with 2GB of ram and a quad core cpu on my phone ?
Render 3D animations? LOL
Linux, anyone?
Motorola Atrix 4G AT&T unlocked
I would love 2GB of RAM and more internal memory than the regular Atrix(32GB instead of 16GB).
I don't really care that much if its a quad-core and dual-core because the software barely takes advantage of the dual core processor if they are going to go with quad-cores now then make the processors take advantage of software for once with apps and video games as well as being able to play HD videos of different formats.
I would settle for a nice dual core 1.5-1.7 Ghz processor that is battery efficient

exactly why I plan on keeping my phone for a long time.
it's fake . i Thing the gonna build razor 2 or droid 5 with better qwerty
"It's shopped, I can tell by the pixels" . Though I did have my doubts by look since it looks a similar shape of our atrix, but with the hardware buttons blacked out and the logo flipped to the bottom. If it is true (slim chance), I think the 2 gigs of ram would be overkill for most users, save power users and linux folks. Well we shall see in time I guess.
That sucks! I was really looking forward to that phone if it was real! That would have been a monster of a battery in the thing. Week long use anyone?
