[Q] CM7's Dial Pad - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey just a question here if someone could help me out.
Wanting to know if there's an option to turn on the "search contacts" option on the dial pad in CM7.
Anyone remember how with the stock rom you could press say...666 for m.o.m. and be able to press that when it came up to call?
It was basically a built in search option for the contacts. Be it corresponding numbers or corresponding letters.
Is this an option with CM7? Cause I really, really, really miss that option.
So much easier to search numbers by pressing letters than it is trying to remember numbers or scrolling contacts.
Anyone know about that? Thanks again for all the help guys!

press the "genius button " and start typing the name.

You can't do that CM7 dialer. Get Go Contacts or dialer one from market. This dialpad has the search feature your looking for.

Awesome. Thanks. But which one of these do you recommend?
And how would I set it as the default dialer?

Try GO contacts, you'll probably stick with it. How make default? In the beginning whenever you try to launch contacts if there are several options you'll be asked which application you want to run (or complete action with)- plus the option to make your choice as default (you can always revert it from 'manage applications').
what will happen is, that after choosing the number in the method you wanted (either typing numbers or letters) and you'll press the dial button- it will use cm7 dialer anyway, but with the numbers you've asked for, which is fine anyway. As far as I know you can't change this.
Also when you answer incoming calls it's with cm7 dialer.
Don't know which launcher you're using, but consider also giving a try to GO launcher too, it's a pretty good one too.

why cant i just diall the name of the person i want to call

On the mytouchslide I can just dial the name of the person I want to speak with on the g2 I cannot anyway to change this?
That is sense feature. I will miss it when I ditch my EVO and goto the G2. I am not sure if other Dialers will do the same thing.....
There are a few apps for this. I personally like "Star Contacts." I believe another one was "Dialer One."

I use Star Contacts as well.
Ah yes, one of many features that I miss from my slide. That and the full weather animation.

Do any of these programs change the way the dialer looks. I don't want a change in the look just the feature
My suggestion would be to just tap the search button, type the name in there, and click the dial icon.

No. Here's Star Contacts. Once you get the contact on screen, you click the contact. From there you can call, text or email the contact.
It also provides some enhancements of the call log that I prefer to the standard call log. You get the exact time of the call, not "3 days ago" and you also get the duration of the call in hours, minutes and seconds.
why not use the search button? no really on the phone. you tap the button then type the name and it will look for it in your contacts and you click to dial.
You can get weather animation with beautiful widgets.

lets say you just called them an hour ago, and want to dial them back again
isntead of hitting a total of 2 buttons to call them again, in order to type in their name, you're going to have to do at least 3, and more depending on how long your contact list is, to an average of about, lets say 5.
that would mean a 150% increase in keystrokes...
If you just called them an hour ago (not sure how often *you* make phone calls) they should be near the top of your recent calls...
i use Dialer One, which is similar to the HTC Dialer and has swiping from page-to-page for recents/favs/contacts.
Also, getting a shortcut to the program where you can get to it quickly might help too. If you haven't checked out replacement launchers/homes in the market, I'd suggest it.

What nolsen311 said... Your situation is solved by stock software. I don't think the issue is recent calls, but simply searching for peeps. The stock search button works well.
cant you just flash it and install Desire Z rom?
Can't you just... open the keyboard, type the name, tap the profile image, tap the phone icon (first one)? It's not so complicated.
Works perfect for me!
to the OP... i'm hooked on the HTC Sense way of searching/dialing (T9 "spelling" out a contact's name)
i really like Dialer One - its *very* similar to the Sense interface, if that's what you're coming from
also, a couple times i had an idea for an improvement so i emailed the guy and he fixed it right away - pretty cool!
(ps... that star contacts looks pretty slick - i might just give that a try too!)

For the weather animation and Sense style weather clock widget, check out "Weather and Toggle Widget" by Android Apps in the market. It costs a couple of bucks, but works great. A true Sense style clock and weather widget with full screen animations on stock Android.
If you get it, to get the Sense style to it, download the H7C Clock and H7C Weather themes for it, and the Weather Widget Forecast Addon by Android Apps for the animations.

[TIP] Hidden call settings on Epic

I haven't seen a thread for this yet, so I thought I would share. After installing Launcher Pro, I was playing around with the shortcuts and Activities. Under Call settings there is a hidden menu named "All Calls". If you create a shortcut you will have access to the auto reject call menu and will have the ability to enter phone numbers, or select numbers from the call history, that should be automatically rejected. The nice thing about it is the phone doesn't ring or vibrate. Since I forward my office line to my cell, I get a lot of solicitors and its great to be able to dump them automatically.

Nice find. I wish I would have discovered this sooner. I actually bought "Group to Voicemail" on the Market a few weeks ago because I needed this functionality. Oh well. It's a nice app and the dev seems cool.
LOL...
i just noticed this menu is NOT in the epic..lol
this is a regular menu in all other android phones i had use, such as the moto droid and the nexus one
Define how I am supposed to find something "hidden". Kinda confusing. I have Launcher Pro isntalled and see nothing about this under settings/call settings. Wanna elaborate?
Go to a blank spot onto your phone. Tap as if you were going to add a widget or shortcut. Go into shortcuts, activies, call settings, and tap all calls. It will create a shortcut which u go into and will see the auto reject feature.
I believe you must have LauncherPro. This is not in the settings menu.

You have to enter the number without any dashes or spaces.
"Cell Broadcast SMS" looks interesting.

No you don't have to leave it on the home screen, but it makes it easier to add more numbers later if you do. Personally, I have a folder on my home screen that contains that shortcut and shortcuts to other apps and settings I frequently use.
Metallica76 - thanks for clarifying those additional steps. My apologies everyone for not being more specific on the actual steps for creating the shortcut.
Now if I can just find the "send to voicemail" option everyone says is in the contacts settings, which clearly is not there.

As far as I can tell, this can be done through any launcher, even the TouchWiz launcher.

You can also press the icon next to the entry field to add a number from your contact list or from your call log (although you will have to remove any dashes included).

How to clear notifications with 3rd party apps

Hey when I use go dialer its not clearing out missed calls I have to go into the original one to make them go away using the latest cyanogenmod . Reason I use go dialer is that the original one don't have smart searching.

Yeah, I just noticed this, as well, that it doesn't clear the missed calls notification. Strange, as it does work with Go SMS. Odd...
By the way, you're using a Desire HD? So do I and the original dialer does have smart searching. You can either press the numbers if you know part of the phone number or you can press the letters of a name and it will find that as well. And with press I mean 'tap' of course.
Are You talking about stock ROM or cyanogenmod when you say the dialer has smart search
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
The stock ROM. CyanogenMod's dialer doesn't support smart search.

Yeah it works but I want to stick with go contacts
I have the same problem. I'm using Go Contacts EX and its really frustrating to open native phone app, just to clear missed call notifications
still nobody found a solution? I'm using CyanogenMod 7.0.3-DesireHD
Download Titanium Backup, navigate to Go Contacts in the app list in TB, and long press it, then select "Convert To System App". That will allow Go Dialer to clear the missed call notification!

Changing default dialer

This may not be specific to the S4 but is there a way to change the default dialer to Go Dialer. I don't care much for the default dialer's aesthetics and would like to use something more customizable. I haven't had any luck. The only options I get after clearing the defaults for the stock phone and contacts app is Phone and my Sophos.
Go.

Im guessing your talking about Go Contacts EX while on your dial pad hit your menu key themes and you can download some I like the Iceblue Theme.
Im referring to changing the default dialer from stock to go contact/dialer. Even when intiating a call from go contacts the stock dialer and sophos are the only options I get to select from after defaults are cleared from the stock phone and contact apps

I'd like to know how to do this too, trying to use Dialer One as the default dialer, but I see no way to modify this.
I have the same problem. Just got Samsung Galaxy S4 Active. Dialer I am using to setup - Rocket Dial Pro version.
But there are only are only Phone and Skype apps in "Complete action using" dialog box.
Tried to reinstall Rocket Dial, add/remove from device administrators. I must admit, phone IS NOT rooted!
I will try to contact Rocket Dial developer, as I am using commercial version.
Likewise Motorola XT910

Similar RocketDial problem with Motorola XT910 (except different "complete action using" options).
Any useful response from developer? Thanks.

Google Dialer problem with pop up default dialer

After having selected the Google dialer as my default, I continuously am asked the question which dialer do you want to use it as your default dialer when I highlight a number and then ask to dial it. Is it me or are others having this problem as well? I'm running Android 4.4.

I'm having the same issue. I'm running Android 4.4 and Nova launcher. I've tried setting as default different dialers but when I click a missed calls notification I get the pop up asking for which dialer to use. I think I'm not getting the same as you when highlighting a number and calling, it straigh away shows the in-call screen.

has anyone ever figured out a way around this? the only thing i could think of was to modify the stock dialer.apk to remove the recent calls default intent, but i haven't been able to figure out a way to do that...i haven't been able to get services.jar decompiled to take the signature check out.
