color issue? - Atrix 4G General

is it just my phone or what here?
I have noticed the saturation of colors on my atrix are just horrible specially green which makes yellow and orange that's why yellow and orange are really off... just me or everyone? if so anyone got an idea on how to tackle this issue?

search is your friend, its not just your phone. Its also not really a problem for a lot of people, myself included, since id take it over supersaturated colors any day.

The Colors on my phone look like the colors on my Touch Pro. What I mean is that they look the way they should.

Agreed, mine looks fine to my eyes. Best looking screen I've ever had on a device besides my G73JW.

I cannot complain. My color look ok to me.

The resolution is amazing I can't lie but the quality and the color are **** compared to my amoled desire.. green is too dark and the quality of the picture is wack too pixelated...

everyone who says it's not important is lying at least a little. the screen is not perfect, period. one needs only to look at a green image or moving red image to see the flaws in the screen design.

As a color blind person I can say that the greens look fine to me. and thanks for saying I am lying even if only a little.

There have been a couple of colour comparisons, and I believe the concensus has been that the Atrix has more "realistic" colours, while we are more used to other devices having colours that "pop" with over saturation. We have become accustomed to over saturation, and so when we see colours on a screen that more closely match real world colours, we think there is something wrong. I will take the Atrix colours over anything else I have used.
<edit> I have seen one comparison where correct colour calibration techniques were used to compare the Atrix to I believe the iPhone4. I will try to find it again and post a link.

What color tint does your screen have? Blue, Yellow or Neutral?

In conjunction to the post, "blue tint problem," which isn't really a problem but anyway....
I thought it'd be interesting to create a poll to see where everyone's at with their Vibrants.
Please participate in the poll, it'll be very interesting to see...
So if you're on the blue side or yellow side, obviously submit yours accordingly, however, for neutral that's for those who have calibrated monitors that can get true comparisons to determine if it's neutral.
There's no need to lie here LOL..it's just for fun so the more accurate it is the better. Don't just click neutral if you don't really know for sure. Try comparing your phone first with other Vibrants to be sure.
Here we go!
It's slight blue, but related to viewing angle and screen brightness. Viewing straight on, it's pretty neutral.

I know what you mean. Could the SAMOLED screen perhaps slightly change in its color tone as it warms up?
When I fired up the two Vibrants I have that was turned on for the first time and compared it to my other two which has been in use, the two never been used phones screen looked identical in its tone/shade.
So perhaps over time it does change as it, "breaks in?"
Does anyone know if this blue tint will get better with time? Mine seems to be the same, wondering if I should exchange my phone.
Well, mine is more cyan, though I can understand people calling it blue and it's driving me crazy. Even with brightness all the way up, there is no real white. This issue will likely cause me to return my Vibrant - along with the cheap build quality - as my Nexus screen looks much better and neutral in comparison. Even my wife noticed it immediately though she also has a Nexus.
Neutral, I've compared with monitors and other Vibrants from my T-Mobile store.
The blue should fade over time..sometimes they put in a bit of extra blue to compensate the blue's lower life span..if you want to even it out use a blue background as your home screen for a while and it should even out >.>

Are you sure it will fade? Where did you get that info from, I know wikipedia talks about this and says the same thing, but wikipedia is not really that accurate. Where did you get your info?
I downladed an LCD test app from market, i'm running a constanst blue screen hoping it will help fade out the blue tint a bit. thanks

When compared to mine my wife's had a very strong blue tint to it. Since I ordered ours over the phone I called Tmobile. They overnighted me a replacement without any hassle, I'd give them a call and see what they will do for you.
posted this in the other "blue tint" thread too
"...since the OLED material used to produce blue light degrades significantly more rapidly than the materials that produce other colors, blue light output will decrease relative to the other colors of light...In order to delay the problem, manufacturers bias the colour balance towards blue so that the display initially has an artificially blue tint, leading to complaints of artificial-looking, over-saturated colors..."

I guess if your imagining a blue tint, or don't know how to change screen settings them maybe you need a less advanced device.

I guess if you did not receive a defective Vibrant with an extremely blue screen, even with brightness all the way up and power saving mode off, your not qualified to speak for those who did. Of course it would not make sense to you.
i dont know about you guys but every time Ive ever seen a white LED its always had a blueish tint (like automotive LED's) its really not that big of an issue
My display was noticeably blue the moment I turned it on... going to the T-Mobile store today to see if I can get a better unit with a more neutral color temperature.

It matters to some people more than others. If it doesn't bother you then great. It's not really fair to criticize people who are bothered by it--one should have a reasonable expectation for color accuracy of their display, especially for a device so touted as being a multimedia powerhouse.

I have that issue with the blue screen and for some reason I'm the only one who sees it, I work for T-Mobile and I was showing my co-workers that there is a blue tint to the screen and they didn't see it it until I compared it to another phone. I'm also a graphic artist and I guess we see colors that others don't notice cuss we have too that's what we do. I also had a issue with the screen, there was some pixelation on my screen so I exchanged it.

You know, some people here say every Super Amoled has a blue tint. I have to disagree. I've been comparing my vibrant side by side to other vibrants, and the screens vary from phone to phone. Samsung deffinately has some manufacturing inconsistences. Side by side to other Vibrants, my screen has a very visible dark grayish blue tint. Other vibrants have a slight blue/green tint. While other vibrants i've compared to have gorgeus warm whites. 1 vibrant had a very dingy yellow look to all the whites. So this is not in our imagination, the screens vary a lot on these phones.
My cousin just got the vibrant this morning, she had not seen mine. She saw mine this morning and says "why is your screen blue?" Put mine side by side next to hers, and hers has nice warm bright whites. All of our brightness settings were identical.
I'll be exchanging shortly when I have time.

Milestone 2 TFTerrible Screen

Is anybody else noticing how dull the colours on the Milestone 2 is? ive looked around and havnt been able to find anybody else talking about it.
I took a few shots of it beside a ZTE Blade and a Zune HD (Zune on medium brightness, both phones on 30% brightness) and strangely enough the Blade's TFT screen looks identical to the Zunes OLED... and the Milestone looks awful!
im confused because the Blade cost 100 and the Milestone cost me 450!???
photos and a video here:
http://picasaweb.google.com/savagecabage/Milestone2TFTErrible#
is there some settings that im missing? im hoping there is. i feel like ive been screwed my motorola lol but i suppose its my own fault, i didnt really do that much research on the screen, i just presumed that a phone that cost 4 times as much as my last phone would have a decent screen
i got this info from pdadb.net, does this make sense to anybody?
ZTE Blade color transflective TFT , 262144 scales
Milestone 2 color transflective TFT , 16777216 scales
also there only seems to be about a 5-10 degree viewing angle on it, once the phone is tilted out side that the colour drops again, oh well
Do you have any screen protector or something on the MS? Are you sure screen brightnes is @30%? I have Droid2 Global and a Milestone (1) which both essentially have the same screen as on MS2 and it is not looking half that dull! True, colors aren't AMOLED like, but I would call it above average for TFT screen
Edit: just looked at the rest of the pics you provided and honestly the ZTE screen looks worse than the MS2 when it comes to color representation - everything feels redish/pinkinsh on it. The AMOLED is not comparable under this conditions. Take some photos at daylight to see "the other side of the coin"

no screen protector on and im using widgetsoid power widget and have both of them set to 30% using that. yea maybe its that the ZTE Blade colours are over saturated and im just used to look at them that way, but there is definitely some colours wrong and dull in places, like the red in the youtube icon is more of a washed out red than thier logo usually is
ah not to worry i suppose, i probably wont even notice it in a few weeks, ill be selling of the blade then so i wont have anything to compare it to anymore
awesome phone apart from that though
if i find some better examples ill post them,
thanks

"It is vibrant and displays colours well"
According to DisplayMate (which is an authority on displays) the Milestone Droid has the most accurate colors of ANY mobile screen. SAMOLED has awfully inaccrate and fake colors due to the poor pentile matrix arrangement. I dont know if the OLED screen on the Zune is full RGB or also pentile, but its colors are also "gaudy" and no realistic. Compared to my LG's IPS panel, the Milestone is pretty close. I suggest that your eyes are just accustomed to fake and bleeding colors, or your LCD might be a lemon.
The Milestone's display is IPS with full color gamut and true 24 bit color, not a cheap TN panel like almost every other phone. However, Android 2.1 and 2.2 have galleries that are only 16 bit, so pictures look compressed, not the screen's fault. Blame Google.

This picture indicates just how bad the ZTE screen is. That background on the right isn't even remotely close to being white like it is supposed to be.
It appears to me that your Droid brightness settings are too low (or is on auto dimming) because the Droid's screen should be much brighter--something like 550 nits for the Droid to 300-350 nits.
Also, your eyes are clearly accustomed to "gaudy" and inaccurate colors from OLED, whereas the Droid's display is very accurate.
Have a look at this DisplayMate article that breaks down why the Droid is accurate, Galaxy S' SAMOLED (similar to the Zune's OLED) inaccurate: http://lh3.ggpht.com/_BZtTwn-keT4/TSb4DpoadvI/AAAAAAAAAc0/0pqLgfd_Uik/s640/IMG_2833.JPG
I recommend manually setting the brightness on your Droid. Personally, I prefer the screen very bright. Let your eyes adjust to the Droid, and if you still want overly saturated/fake/inaccurate OLED colors, then please sell your Droid 2 to me
ive had my milestone 2 a month and when i look at it i still think how awesome the screen is, really sharp and clear, colours are vibrant, and ive had to turn the brightness down to almost the lowest it will go because its so bright! lol.
but as with most things peoples perception varies, what looks or sounds great to one person might look or sound horrible to another..

yea at first i was thinking that my eyes were just accustomed to "gaudy" colours as you said but if thats true then it means that every screen ive looked at in the last few years has been incorrect.
i just put my xperia x1 and touch pro on ebay and realised that they look "normal", i put some photos on them to look at and both of those seem to be roughly the same as the zte blade, not as saturated as the ZTE blade colours ill give you that, but similar enough, and i have two monitors on my computer here and the photos have exactly the same "normal" colours, but then looking at the same photos on the Milestone 2 they look fairly washed out, even with the brightness at 100% there is a big difference.
i change the brightness settings all the time though but in the photo they were both at the same brightness so it shouldnt matter what % it was just to comapre them
anyway im definitely not imagining it, ive been doing photography and graphic design for a good few years now so my eyes are able to tell small differences between colour at this stage (i wouldnt be much of a photographer/designer if i couldnt) and its more than a small difference, enough that id bother posting a thread here to see if anybody else is noticing it!
well, ive come to the conclusion the screen on my milestone 2 it a lemon... or maybe motorola is the lemon. one of those two, or both lol
i wont be selling it anytime soon though unfortunately sorry im enjoying this phone way to much, the issue doesnt really bother me enough to do something crazy like that..
i just thought it was strange to see it on a 450 phone thats all
mine sometimes as problems, but not that bad :/
dude i really dont think your phone or the screen is the problem, i think its your eyes, just look at the picture of that Rovio screen! the left one is white, the right one is PINK! obviously the m2 has a much more accurate screen.

i totally agree about the sharpness and the clearness and the vibrantness of the screen, great detail in it. and i just realised all the colours are really vibrant apart from light blue and red, everthing else seem to be normal. the light blue looks the palest, and then the reds arent as bad but definitely still some difference compared to my computer monitors and other phone screens ive been comparing to.
ah not to worry anyway, i was just curious whether it was a problem everybody was having or if it was just my screen, i wont lose any sleep over it

yea i didnt really notice that when i was uploading the photo, i just explained that in a post a few seconds ago. it must be just the camera im using, both of them are the same whiteness when looking at them, i was just trying to show the difference in the red colour. the zte blade was at an angle too so i dont know where the pink came from, i just looked at angry birds again on that phone, and at an angle and its still white, stupid camera lol
Savage, I think you might have a bad screen. Can you compare it to another Global or exchange it? The Droid 1, 2, R2D2, and Global all have the same IPS panel as reviewed by DisplayMate, which thinks it is the most color accurate on phones. The Droid does use dynamic contrast, so its colors are sometimes deeper than at other times. I notice this especially when changing wallpaper. Some look absolutely stunning (almost as good as my IPS hdtv), but others are washed out. This is part of the dynamic contrast kicking in and Android's limited 16 bit gallery. I despise dynamic contrast and always turn in off on all my monitors. Unfortunately, I dont know how to disable it on the Droid

Holy Grab BAgs!!! The new 2.3.3 fixed my purplish tint issue!

Wow too my surprise, after installing the new update, I noticed right off the colors has been calibrated correctly! No more purplish in certain shades of grays now!

2.3.3 also fixed my overly bright screen too. I used to have my NS always set on the lowest brightness setting and I still felt that it was too bright.
Yeah it did seem to improve the brightness as well. I like the new settings.

You guys don't think its too yellowish now??
I do a bit of photography and have a colour corrected wide gamut monitor I use for retouching.
To my eyes, when looking at the same photography on both devices, the new colour temperature is much closer to 'correct' than the old one was. Not perfect but much more preferable to me.
so maybe all the complaining people have been doing is just their eyes not used to what the screen "should" look like

I know that when I first bought my Datacolor Spyder colorimeter to calibrate my monitor it took a while to get used to the results. Much less "in your face" than before, but much closer to natural.
I exchanged my first Nexus S because the screen was too blue/purple. The second one was slightly less purple. But the new color profile got rid of all the purpleness

I like the new colors it looks now great!!!
I noticed the colour difference immediately as well. It actually felt weird to me, I was really used to the purplish colour in the UI. Feels very grey. Not complaining though if this is how it should have been, but feels weird.
I for one do not like the new colors. They look too washed out and gray.
The Crispness is gone. Whites are now yellowish. I am not a fan. I did a comparison with a friends NS side by side his with 2.3.2 and mine with 2.3.3. and there is a difference and 2.3.2. looked better. This could be "the correct color" as has been stated but that does not mean it looks better. I have never noticed a purplish tint before and even looking at my friends NS with 2.3.2. I still do not see it.

Same here. Looking at it again (2 Nexus S side by side) the one with 2.3.3 really seems washed out.
I did notice an occasional purplish tint on 2.3.2, but mostly from different viewing angles, less so when looking straight on at the screen. It never bothered me. The overall color scheme was also a bit cool, with more blues coming through. I've read that because blue LEDs in AMOLED screens wear out quicker, often they are overemphasized at first and will fade over time. I thought this might have been the explanation.
I definitely noticed a color change after updating to 2.3.3. At first it was very bothersome. The colors do seem to be washed out and the whites seem just a tad yellow. But I can see how this may be more accurate as the previous color scheme was overly cool. Maybe we tend to prefer a cooler color temperature. The new one will take some getting used to. Blue is a "comfort color" after all.
Blue appears brighter to the human eye despite the actual lumen output being similar. It's like those custom bulbs that some people like to put on their honda civics or whatever, the blue/purple looking ones. Yea they "look" bright but they actually output less light than the standard yellowish bulbs.
Anyway, being an avid photographer and spending hours tweaking my plasma TV's colors, warmer colors are more natural to the human eye and most people jack up the blues to make things look more contrasty or sharp, which in my opinion is too harsh and fake. Even the iPhone 4 screen is tinted blue to make whites appear brighter. Then again, some HTC screens are so red tinted it's ridiculous, so in the end, download the color calibration app and tweak it according to your liking.

Color compare between Atrix and N1

I just check the same pic on my Atrix 4G , and Nexus one, as well as my IPS screen.
here are the sample:
1st attatchment is Atrix
2nd is Nexus one
3rd is Atrix vs N1
4th is original pic taken with Canon 5DmkII
IMO,
Atrix has washed out color
Nexus One(AMOLED) is overSaturated
My IPS lcd screen is calibrated by Spyder 2 pro.
I may like the color on Atrix, coz I am tired of AMOLED oversaturated color.
I dont have Inspire, so I can't judge on the SuperLCD screen.
Your judgement?
your atrix screen suffers from a yellow tint. it happens in all phones including iphone, nexus S " all phones "
there are 2 types of screens
1- yellow tinted screen
2- blue tinted screen. your nexus 1 is blue. while your atrix is yellow.
the blue one is the better screen, you will notice it when you put a blank white wallpaper. and on high brightness, you will see you atrix has yellow tint to it while your nexus 1 doesnt.
i say swap your atrix for better screen.
also you have to keep in mind that your screen is not Super Amoled. so dont compare contasts .
Just my $0.02, but I think the Atrix screen is better. It represents real colors, not oversaturated colors that everyone seems to love on phone screens now.
Atrix had the best of everything in these. Definition, color balance, skin tones, etc. Anyone who clames different now is full of crap.
+1 Thanks for the comparison. This should be stickied for all fanboys to see.
The N1 is waaay to red in my opinion.
The atrix could use a bit more warmth in the colours but not really that bad
More importantly, who's the girl..!?
Joking aside, the Atrix looks far more natural. I'm getting mine in a couple of hrs & have currently a N1 so I'll be comparing a lot in a while. Can't wait!
I think the atrix screen is great. I really dig the realistic colors. It's not perfect, but it's better than the N1 by far.
I still think that the iPhone has a better screen, i just don't want to use 3.5" anymore. It's too small and limiting.
One thing though that I notice between this and the n1 is that I can actually use the atrix in direct sunlight and that's a +1.

this! and only this! I can see the atrix screen @ 50% brightness in direct sunlight whereas I could barely make out anything on my N1 @ 100% brightness in direct sunlight!
The atrix cant do the color yellow at all.. Look up yellow on wikipedia, you will see what I mean. Doesnt matter what shade the phone is, it cant do yellow. iPhones do it perfectly, as does my captivate.
That being said, the flesh tones are FAR better than on a SMOLED.

Display colors are not vibrant

I have installed SBF 1.5.2 right after I got my Atrix so I don't know if it is related to that but in my opinion the colors of the display are not vibrant / colorful compared to my HTC Desire Z (Vision/G2) and that phone has no AMOLED.
Compared to the HTC the colors all look a little bit greyer and I don't like it.
Is it possible to change that or am I the only one?
Thanks in advance.
You're comparing two different screen types. The Atrix uses TFT pentile and the Desire Z uses S-LCD. The Atrix is already known for some washed out colors like yellow.
Ah, thanks.
So it is not possible to change that with a software update like Google did in Android 2.3.3!?
I agree that the display is "not as nice" as other phones. My captivate IMO looks better.
yes the captivate is brighter but it also hurts my eyes after staring at it for a while. i wonder if there is going to be a program like galaxy tuner for the atrix. with galaxy tuner you can adjust the yellow color of the screen.

It could be possible, we just need to tear down the kernel (once it gets worked around) and play with it some. It was kinda funny though because after giving my Captivate to my GF and getting my atrix, I look at the Cappy and go "Holy crap that screen is REALLY blue"
I was surprised on the Atrix screen. The forum didn't give it justice. The characters looks very sharp. Colors are easy to the eyes and no pixels at all!

just take a look at your battery meter when it's green.
any green (like real green, not dark) text on the web shows the obvious differences between the PenTile display and a regular LCD.
IMHO the display of the Atrix is one of the worst displays in a high end phone that I have seen in the last time.
Only the resolution is great, the rest isn't really high end.
Yellow looks more like dirt and faster scrolling or movements show black shadows (e. g. in Angry Birds).
