is there a way to use our "legally backed up" roms with the playstation pocket app? unfortunately it isn't available in my country, but i'd love to play some of my roms on that!
P.S.:best.phone.ever
I dont think it will allow us to play 'backed up roms'. Best bet is to play your legal roms on FPSe or psx4droid (Doesnt work yet on xperia play).
I remember that when the virtual console service for the wii came out you could mod the files by looking in a hex editor where the portion of the wad file (sort of the executable file the wii uses) is that contained the rom and replace it with the hex code of another rom.
Maybe the same will work with playstation games on the xperia play, dump the game, look in a hex editor where pieces are the same as with original crash bandicoot files and replace them with the hex code from another game.
Personally I think improving fpse to work well with the xperia play will prove a better future then hacking what SE made.
yeah, you're probably right.... speaking of which, is FPSE open source? i might as well take a look at it, and mess with the play's APIs....
I don't believe fpse is opensource. PSX4droid recently became opensource though but is not yet working for android.
Here is the source code if you want to play with it: https://github.com/zodttd/libpsx
maybe in the future some dev will "legally" reverse-engineering the app and find a way to play your roms, you have to wait until the phone is global until you can see some cool actions done to it.

There's no such thing as "legally backed up roms" as console ROMs do not fall under the "backups allowed" exceptions thanks to the hardware manufacturers.

ok, kill me then! jeez, it's not like gba or psone games are actually sold anymore, it won't hurt anyone..... i'm sure sony or nintendo don't even care!!
Speak for your self. Laws are different in every country. In The Netherlands it is legal to make a backup for private use for example. And I actually got tools to do it for my SNES and N64 and DS and software on my wii to do it for gamecube/wii games. Wasn't the psx easely doable with a standard dvd-writer in any pc? Legal back-ups are not a myth just because you don't use them or because you live in a country with (imo) odd laws.

Actually the PSone games are available for sale on the PSN network.
I've been purchasing the classic Final Fantasy games and playing them on my PS3. The same games I purchased can also be legally downloaded into my PSP for on the go gaming (up to 5 PSPs).
Too bad those games cannot be transfered to the Play legally.

Yes, and that's a real ****ter.
I purchased many many ps1 games back in the day.
Some of which I have now purchased a second time through psn.
PS certified devices should have a way of signing in to psn to d/l content you have purchased.
Legal or not, if I've purchased a game previously I see no harm in downloading a rom for another device.
If you're rooted, you can use the Market Enabler to change your SIM Numeric to a Number that's in the UK, for example, and with that the Playstation Pocket app will work.

well, actually i have, but it still says that it's not available in my country... it must be tracking my location, from my ip or something..... :/
If you look on the SD card you can easily find the data loaded by the PSX games.
In /sdcard/Android/data/com.sony.playstation.NCUA#####, you'll find the data files for all the PSX games (which correspond to the standard SCUS or SLUS codes for Sony, for example NCUA94358 is Cool Boarders 2, just as SCUS-94358 is).
From there you will find a .zpak file, which is just a ZIP file, within which is a Data folder, within which is an "image.ps" file.
Now I'm no ROM hacker... but from my days watching the PSP scene where they injected PSX files into the native emulator, it was just a matter of stripping the image file out of one rom, and injecting your own. I'm not sure what format this image.ps uses, but I'm hoping somebody with some knowledge in this area will look at what needs to be done to convert a bin or an iso into an "image.ps".
At the end of the day, the native emulator is WAY better than Psx4droid or Fpse, and if Sony isn't going to release the games we want to play (though I'm very willing to pay them for them if they do), then I'd like to figure out how I can play them the way they're meant to be played.
I did!...but i bet the zpak is signed... it can't be this easy... it must be like apks, someone will have to find a way to sign it... but this is just an assumption.. I'll give a couple of paperclips and a subway coupon to whomever figures this out!....
Catch is Sony offerings are and will be less than best. Examples of great games MIA:
1. Raiden Project
2. Tobal 2
3. Tekken 3 (the Golden version)
4. Thrill Kill (sad, but I love it)
5. NFL Blitz 2001
6. NBA Jam Extreme
I could keep adding games. I bought these and a few hundred (sadly) more from launch until a little after the PS2 came out. Even had an extra PS1 (Japan model) so I could play import games.
I would rather gut the software from the Xplay to make room for more user apps and use other emulators (Sony's low 380mb space storage is forcing me into thinking this way).
Hi there,
Not sure if this has already been answered somewhere (I had a quick look) but when is Sony going to be releasing more PS1 games on the Playstation Network for the Xperia play? I want to get this device but not if its going to be badly supported by games.
Cheers
there is actually a not so legit way of obtaining ps1 games from PSN and play on xperia play; all you really need to do is download the ps1 classic from PSN, migrate it to external drive via ps3 (or usb mode on psp), then unpack the pbp file to obtain the iso(s)
i already did this to obtain ff7 and ff9 to play on xperia play via fpse

Fair use rights allow you to back up mediums, especially when they are fragile or the hardware to play them has become obsolete. Its covered under media shifting, despite what manufacturers want you to believe.

who announced that there will be support for ps2 games?
if they are launching ps1 classics, i dont believe that they will natively support ps2, otherwise at launch time they would have at least one...
I find it hard to believe that, given that there are already FOSS PS2 emulators, noone ported them to Android... unless they are aware that the current smartphones don't have enough horsepower. That would include the Xperia Play, which is no more powerful than an Asus EEEPC.
this is in regards with reviews i've read and watched online. you could try to check gsmarena's preview/review as one.

Highly unlikely.
As a general rule of thumb, you need a machine approximately 3 tims as powerful as the machine you are emulating.
My old 2.2ghz PC with duo Core and a 4670 ATI radeon is way more powerful than the xperia play, and it slowed to a grind with PS2 emulators.
As much as i would love to see it happen, i believe the N64 is as far as emulation will go on the Xperia Play.

aha your missing the point my friend, forget emulators as such for the moment, sony do not need to emulate there software like conventional emulators do, as they have access to the proprietary code, that other companies cannot use because of copywrite, so they are using some java tricks and there own knowledge regarding there hardware to make the playstation games run more as a native android app than an emulator.

Agreed xperia play will never play a ps2 game and if it does it will suffer from bad fps. But ps2 emulation may be available around the time that the psp2 comes out because thats when they will have the technology to do it. Xperia play is one of many playstation certified phones to come and probably the most inferior. Its a good handset to have especially for ps and old console emulators because of the gamepad.

Afaik playstation pocket is nothing more than an emulator.
Also the native code doesn't belong to Sony. It belongs to the game developers.
Also, the chances of Sony Ericson getting their hands on this is tiny.
The chances of them getting a developer team organised to decompile game code and recompile for the xperia play is even smaller.
All in all, its either emulation or nothing for older games tbh.

Sorry i didnt mean that, when i said proprietary code, i meant the actual playstation firmware. sony have put hardware element of the playstation into the device, the app is no more than a loader, used to communicate between the hardware of the device and the files that make up the game, go look at the files on your sd card for crash bandicot, they look nothing like the files that you would get if you unpacked an image of the PS1 disk.

I think it is a fair assumption to make that the playstation pocket games are encoded with an algorithm that playstation pocket decodes.
This ensures that you cant grab a ps1 iso and run it on playstation pocket.
Sony E wouldnt make any money selling games if you could simply grab an iso and run it.
Afaik though, the games are still being emulated. Not running natively. It is too much work to decompile old games, reprogram them and recompile them for too little profit.
Ps2 games will be emulated on xperia play 2. I doubt we will see them before. I would like to be wrong though.
The devs shoyld still have the source so ps2 games could be ported to the xperia play. It's more off a question if the investment will be worth it.

sony only have to release source if it's covered by the GPL and anything playstation isnt
Maybe there is a chance for ICO
http://astrange.ithinksw.net/ico/
I mean that devs can port their own games and release them on the market (for a fee).
First, nobody didn't announce anything, that PS2 thing was just a rumor, Sony itself has never really confirmed it. Second, Sony didn't even release best PS1 games for Play, and the current list of available games is quite ridiculous (i mean, Super Boarders? Jumping Jack?! C'mon, Sony!).
By the way, did any of the devs/hackers take a look at Playstation Pocket and available PS1 games for adding support of .isos and .pbs? That's the only reason i'm checking Play forums. I've read that Geohot is looking forward for Xperia Play, but that was a long time ago.
You will not see PS2 games on the Xperia Play. Geohot will no longer be touching the Xperia Play as per his lawsuit resolution with Sony. PS1 games are running under emulation on the Xperia Play.

Morning all!
I just wanted to say I'm a Sony Ericsson Ambassador based in one of the mobile network retail stores in the UK. If you have any questions you can't find the answers to either drop me a private message or send me something on twitter (SEyorkO2)
I'll do my best to get your questions answered and I'll also be posting information that I get my hands on (that I'm not forbidden to post )
I'm currently using the Arc as my primary phone and the Play as my bit on the side so these are my strongest subjects currently.
Look forward to hearing from you!
Due to lot's of questions coming through I'm going to write them all down and forward them onto the correct departments every Monday rather than constantly bombarding them. Once I get responses I'll post them at the bottom of this post.

Nice. Thanks for saying hi. Hoping to give you more questions when I get my SE XP (Xperia Play) back from service centre at SBE Limited.
Can you say if there are plans to integrate the PSN into the play or add trophy support?
Edit: Also there is a very cool PSN application for the android but is UK only. Do you know if there are plans to bring this app to the rest of the world? It has news, Blogs, friends and trophy list in it.
Edit 2: I have one more question. Who can we request a feature to? I love the Playstation app but I hate having to use three different launchers for my games. There is the Playstation app, the Pocket app and the normal desktop.
I would like the ability to add installed games to the Playstation app so I can slide the control pad and select any game I choose from the one that starts. So far some titles don’t show up there like the PSX games. I also have emulators that use the controls and would like that option. Or if sliding the controls down would give me a list of apps to run for instance a choice to run an emulator or the pocket app or the Playstation app. That would be cool.

I'll forward these onto my ADM and see if we can get some answers. WIth regards to the PSN intergration I believe there were plans for this before the play launched as we were told that the Play would have the same functionality as the Sony Ericsson Aino had. However now it all appears to be unofficial rumour.
I feel your pain regarding the multiple launchers for games and also the fact that they won't auto rotate while browsing through my selection.
We are constantly being told that both the Play and the Arc will be receving major new features with software updates so heres hoping for more playstation intergration. I'll see what I can dig up for you though!
are you serious? So it's not going to be tied into the PSN? What a load of ****...

I bought the phone for emulators.
If you was hoping for it to be a proper Sony handheld system you should of waited to buy the NGP. (vita or w/e).
The Xplay is first and foremost an Android phone with Android and Gameloft games.
I didnt see any mention of titles like God of War or LBP being made for it. And if Sony Ericsson actually did claim this, i wouldnt of believed it anyway.
SE is not Sony.
SE is a London based/Swedish input company that works and is a division for Sony Japan.
It is a different entity from Sony.

No you see, that's where you're wrong:
"Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB is a joint venture established on October 1, 2001[1] by the Japanese consumer electronics company Sony Corporation and the Swedish telecommunications company Ericsson to manufacture mobile phones. The stated reason for this venture is to combine Sony's consumer electronics expertise with Ericsson's technological knowledge in the communications sector. Both companies have stopped making their own mobile phones."
I'm still a firm believer that Sony will support this phone in ways. I'm not banking on them releasing amazing games and ps1 titles, that doesn't bother me. I have fpse for that, and the Android Market, Gameloft also does what I need it to. I'm just hopeful that we will get some decent games from Sony. But I'm happy having it for the emulators for the moment
I personaly could care less if sony does anything for this phone. I already got everything I want for it. There is enough to keep me happy for years to come.

Hmmm, that is why it is a "Sony Playstation" certified phone?
I bought this phone because it was Playstation certified and I fully expect Sony to support it with some great games “like” God of War. GOW port would be perfect and make it worth the purchase but I Have them both on my PSP so I don’t really care. But I do expect better than regular android games with improper button support.

Sony "may" port games over, but highly unlikely.
Here's how i see it -
1) Ericsson (a swedish company) struck a deal with Sony and merged into a telecommunications company called Sony Erriccsson. They moved headquarters to London.
2) Sony Ericcson made a new phone with a playstation pad and got it certified by Sony Entertainment, Playstation division.
3) All Sony would of done was say "yep, make the phone half decent, get our brand on it and we will certify it".
I doubt anybody on the gaming side of Sony even got involved with the production of this phone.
This phone to me is a pure Android phone that can play emulators with a decent control pad.
Thats all i wanted. Thats all i will get. IMO thats all it is ever going to be.
You’re wrong. Sony wouldn't certify the phone without plans to support it. Ericson is part of Sony just like Sony makes Toys, TVs, among other things.
Yea but sony has bigger and better things out there, a playstation phone is whatever to them they brought it out to satisfy a certain crowd nothing more just you watch

The Tokyo Game Show is taking place right now in Japan and Sony is dropping a world of hurt on the gaming industry thanks in part to their new PlayStation Vita handheld gaming device. To help capture the mobile market, Sony is introducing the Playstation Suite SDK for developers to be available this November. This new SDK will allow developers to make cross platform games and apps that work with any Playstation Certified device like (of course) the PSVita as well as Android powered devices like the Xperia Play and Sony’s new brand spankin’ new Tablet S and Tablet P. Sony expects C# developers to have some content up and running by Spring of 2012. This is HUGE news for Android as Sony hopes to have their own Android game market for all Android users regardless of your device. Check out the full press release below.

Sony Computer Entertainment to Offer Software Development Kit for PlayStation®Suite Starting This November
SCE to Provide Strong Support to Content Developers for PlayStation®Suite With the Distribution of the Newly Developed Content Starting Next Spring
TOKYO, Sept. 14, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) today announced that it will offer software development kits (SDK) for PlayStation®Suite (PS Suite), called “PlayStation®Suite SDK,” *1 for content developers starting this November. PS Suite is an initiative solution to deliver the world of PlayStation® to Android™ based portable devices.
Through PS Suite SDK, content developers can create content for PlayStation™Certified (PS Certified) devices, hardware certified through the PS Suite license program, as well as for PlayStation®Vita (PS Vita).
Supporting C# as the programming language, PS Suite SDK can run programs developed in C# on virtual machine equipped on both PS Certified devices and PS Vita. By supporting development for multiple devices and by adopting libraries to create a variety of content not only limited to games, PS Suite SDK will not only help developers save their cost in creating new content but also allow them to efficiently create their content on one SDK and without having to create on several different SDKs.
Through PS Suite SDK, SCE will provide to game developers and publishers the potential to further expand their business opportunities to Android based portable devices. In addition, SCE can approach to a wider range of content developers, non-gaming developers and individual programmers. The detailed information of PS Suite SDK, including how to download, will be announced via a dedicated PS Suite section on SCE’s official website.
As of September 15th, 2011, PS Certified device line-up includes Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB’s Xperia PLAY, Sony Corporation’s “Sony Tablet” S, “Sony Tablet” P, and SCE will continue to further accelerate the expansion of PS Certified devices in addition to the current hardware line-up.
Furthermore, SCE will provide a variety of content towards these PS Certified devices from end October through PlayStation®Store*2 on PlaySation®Network, starting with original PlayStation games (PS one® classics). The service will start in nine countries including Japan, United States, Canada, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Australia and with more countries to follow. In next spring, SCE will enhance the PS Store for PS Certified devices and provide content created by PS Suite SDK, further prevailing the world of PS Suite.
Through PS Suite, SCE will deploy various measures to support content developers in their business for rapidly prevailing Android based portable devices and will expand the PlayStation entertainment experience on an open operating system.

Sounds like Android will get it's own version of the PlayStation Store if you ask me.

Playstation Suite IS coming to Xperia PLAY; SDK announced for November

Playstation Suite Xperia PLAYSony is to breathe more life into the Xperia PLAY after its Playstation Suite plans were reiterated at the Tokyo Games Show 2011. If you remember we first heard of the Playstation Suite back in January, but have not heard much since. The PS Suite aims to deliver Playstation content to ‘Playstation Certified’ devices through a walled garden in the Android ecosystem.
Four Playstation Certified devices have been announced so far. Apart from the Xperia PLAY, this includes the Playstation Vita gaming handheld and two Sony Android tablets – the Sony Tablet S and Sony Tablet P. Sony today announced that the Playstation Suite SDK (software development kit) will become available in November with games expected in Spring 2012.
Playstation Suite coming to Xperia PLAY
This is great news for Xperia PLAY owners as it means content designed for the Playstation Vita through the PS Suite will automatically become available to all other PS Certified devices. This was demonstrated at TGS by Sony’s Kissei Matsumoto who called two developers to the stage to play a side-scrolling shooter called Zero Gravity, one using a Vita and the other a Xperia PLAY. There was apparently no noticeable difference, with the game running smoothly on both platforms.
Whilst Spring 2012 seems some way away, Sony will introduce content for PS Certified devices via the Playstation Store on the Playstation Network at the end of October. Initially this will start with original PS one classics. We’ve already seen a number of these games hit the Xperia PLAY, but here’s hoping this library will be ramped up. The service will start in nine countries including Japan, United States, Canada, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Australia and with more countries to follow.

So basically it says this PS Store will be available end of October? Sounds great.
PS If Verizon finds a way to block it or prevent access and force the VZ Store, I'm going to take a bat to their buildings front windows
Great another market
Yeah, I don't understand this at all...
What does this mean for us? More games will be released? If I own a Vita and a Play, will I be able to use a game on both devices? That would have to limit the games because the Play can't provide games nearly as powerful as the Vita.
If it's just a store with which to buy games...what's the point?
I think the best news out of all this is that the Xperia Play will continue to be supported, which means even if we get left in the dust with dual core super high spec Phones, we will still have major support from PlayStation themselves for games

I think it means some games (such as all PS1 ports) will be playable on both, but of course Sony will also release more powerful Vita specific games. But all games will be available on the Suite, just limited by device on what you can purchase. Just like now that you can buy PSP games on Playstation Store on your PS3 and then transfer them to your PSP.

Okay, starting to make a little more sense. If it means more games, I guess I can't complain. Not to mention I plan on buying a Vita, as well.
I think it clearly states games developed for the vita will be ready and available for the xperia play and other certified devices. It is says that the game zero gravity built for the vita was ran side by side next to the play with noticeable differences.

FTFY
The Vita has a quad core Processor followed up by a Quad core graphics processor. I am 100% sure there will be games that are Vita only and won't work on the Xperia Play.

I keep reading this and re-reading it, but it sounds like they will be expanding the PlayStation store and PlayStation Network to include the PS Certified devices, rather than having a separate store for them. Notice how the note seems to refer to a single "PS Store for PS Network for PS3, PSP, PS Vita and PS Certified devices"?
This makes me wonder if that might just mean that the PSone Classics that we've already purchased might still be made available to PS Certified devices as well once the PS Store is finally available for them. I know reports originally said that we would need to re-purchase content, but that came from a Sony Ericsson spokesperson and only had to do with the Xperia Play. Considering that they had little to no information on PS Suite and how integration into the PS Store and PSN would happen, he could have just been referring to the fact that content was made separately available through Android Market and could not be transferred from the PS Store (which makes total sense).
Although, considering that the PSone Classics available now for the Xperia Play come packaged with the emulator as opposed to the PS3 and PSP where the console has the emulator and you just download the game data, this could just be a pipe dream. It just certainly would be nice if the Xperia Play started acting more like PlayStation device instead of a bastard child of Sony and SE. I'm still hopeful.
What I'm left wondering now: if Sony is going to make this merger of sorts between their own content and the Android games, what will happen with people who have unlocked their bootloaders? We can't access the DRM-protected content: this includes the Qriocity Store and TrackID. What if the PS Suite needs Sony DRM too? Will we, the ones with unlocked BL Plays, be left out in the cold?

As much as I want to believe it can be compatible with ps store, some gamers had ps+ and downloaded psone games until their subscription ended, i don't think it can be carried unless the emulator gets updated through ice cream sammich. Which might wipe out our clone games (ncxa)

If you uninstall qriocity and music unlimited and download market versions. it works without DRM certs.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see...
Now that I think about it, the article mentioned October. Could this be something we're going to see as part of the 2.3.4 update? Or are we going to get a separate app for the PS Store like we do for Music Unlimited and Qriocity?
Why is the article so confusing though... Who the **** wrote it... They thought they were writing the bible... Is sony intentionally being unclear so more people will pick up the play?.

Let's wait until october then.

The announcement was in Japanese then translated, this is the result!
But yeah, it's very unclear and really isn't answering ANY questions we all have
What if, now hear me out...
Sony Market, got games that are Vita, Play, PSP, and PS3 exclusive and then there are games that are multiplatform so peeps on an xperia play can play someone who is on PS3 / PSP / etc...
Graphics are suited to whatever system you use

So can someone explain, I am not complaining or anything, but where is the PlayStation suite games (Not the android ones)? Have they released anything more? I know that there's few of them on the marketplace, you can also use PSXerpia tool to play PS1 games, but where are the official ones? I mean there's no awesome titles released, phone was released back in march, is it dead or something? They still making ICS for it so..?
All I found is this:
https://market.android.com/developer?pub=Sony+Computer+Entertainment+Europe+Limited ...1 game?
I mean this phone (as I know) is little more powerfull then PSP, and all I see is one PS1 game in my region. Where are all the Sony exclusive games? God Of War, some MGS, GTA LCS or anything? Are they even planning to release anything? I am confused.
Poland - I see 10 games.
Gotta wait for Playstation Suite, I'd imagine it's coming with the Vita
its out.... i got it its got about 5 games check threads on xda

PS Pocket app keeps telling me that my region is not supported, how to avoid this problem? I have rooted phone.
This is Sony (Sony Ericsson before) not Sony Computer Entertainment.
This isn't an official PlayStation phone. It's an Android phone that's PlayStation certified. There's a difference.
This is what many people thought when it was announced/launched. Don't expect any SCE published games launching exclusively to the Xperia Play.

You can fake your provider to whatever is most convenient and you will be able to purchase some official PlayStation games from the Android Market if they are available.
I faked to Orange (Canada) and was able to purchase games with my US account.
Just use FPse mate
They have been supporting the Xperia play since it came out and you can play all your favorite Ps1 Games 100% relived.
You can also check out N64oid for a Nintendo emulator or try the other one. Mupen64 but it supports the analog sticks.
I have personally tested Mario 64 on it and it's amazing.
Now onto the bit about XP being more powerful then a PSP?
All of that hope is smacked down with the release of this
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_Vita
The vita is 2x faster than a Xperia play and it's the next generation PSP coming to NA very soon. SCEA will only be worried about making games for that.
So if you wanted an android computer and you got a xperia. you have made a wise choice . if you wanted a gaming device 100% purely. you made a bad one I think
Nah it's ok, I am not big time gamer or something, just wondering.
I have 10 games available and the Official PS app when I check that link. It is ludicrous that it varies so much across the European Union. Ridiculous
I have 10 to. Uuhm ps app? Which link?
