Proposed force-close fix - Epic 4G General

Hello,
I recently had a force-close issue on a recent rom (syndicate frozen 1.1.0) where I was overclocking to 1.4ghz and tried to wifi tether. Tether would not start, so I closed it with taskmanager, and restarted tether. Phone instantly rebooted and I was stuck with the apps that were previously running force-closing.
You need to be rooted for this to work.
Make a list of all the apps that are force closing (important that you include your launcher)
I found out that if you go to the "report" button, there is a "more info" button that opens browser (hopefully it still works). From there, do a google search for a free root file system browser apk (there are plenty of them). Download the apk. the pulldown menu should still be working. Once the download finishes, you will get a notification, pull down the bar and install the app. after it installs, you will get a prompt to "open" the app or "close" the window, choose "open". Navigate to your /data/data folder. search for something that resembles an app that keeps force closing. Enter that folder and delete all the files/folders inside. repeat for the rest of the broken apps. Reboot your phone and it should work fine now.
I am asking that all/most rom developers to add another button on the "force close" "report" notification labeled "fix" that deletes the files from the apps data folder.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but isn't this just the same thing as going to settings-apps and then clearing data for that app?

ooooorrrr you could goto menu>settings>applications>find the app force closing and click clear data and achieve the same thing a lot easier...
rom developers dont have the ability to add buttons to those windows... those reports goto google or samsung...

Not Development. Moved to General.

I just enable journaling and what is this?

First off, sorry about the misplaced post.
I know it does the same thing, but if you are stuck at a force-close loop and your launcher app will not load, not allowing you to access the app management page; you see the dilemma.

i believe this could be because journaling is disabled. After you get your phone set up the way you want it, make a backup. Then restore the backup and you have journaling enabled. Or at the very least, if you get stuck at a force close loop, you will still have a backup to restore and not have to spend hours setting up all your apps etc.
just sayin'

Can also use JournalingOn.zip to instantly enable journaling.. but always having a bckup on hand is a good thing

When opening an app, the app only displays on the screen for a fraction of a second.

Occasionally, when opening an app, the app only displays on the screen for a fraction of a second, then disappears. It just kinda blinks on then off...
I can't figure out what is causing it to do this. It has happened to me with K-9, Facebook, Twitter, Maps...pretty much any app. Sometimes I try to open facebook, and it won't open, but twitter will....Some of the time you can get the program to open if you go home, then open and close the app drawer.....
Anyone else with a similar problem? I have reset the phone twice and it is still doing this...Other than this occasional problem, I love the Vibrant!
Do you have an app killer or startup controller? Mine did the same thing, and I quickly realized I was killing a service that the apps I was launching depended on.
Sent from my SGH-T959
^ pretty much exactly what I was going to post. What have you installed on your phone like this?
Mine has done this a few times, usually after an app force closes. For 30 seconds or so after if I try to reopen that app it will just shut off again, then after a bit, it's fine.
It's happened with the web browser more than once, and a couple other apps.
I get the same exact problem with no real reason. Whenever it happens I just go into the settings from the menu button. Settings opens fine and once I close it ever other app opens correctly again.

Did you erase unneeded apps? There is a list around here somewhere of apps that can be safely deleted, without violating dependencies. I have a stock unit with the lag, the blue tint, etc. . . But I never had this problem without the startup manager.

yes.. I took most of the bloatware off using root manager.
Startup auditor has a list of dependencies for each app that you have installed. Not much good for things that you have already deleted, but maybe the dev site can help? I know I saw a list somewhere of bloat that could be "safely deleted".

I haven't removed anything and mine does this as well. Usually after an app freezes or force closes.

More launchers installed = slower?

I happened to like sammy TW but I was wondering if I install LauncherPro, would it affect the performance in general? I know that they do not run at the same time but would it have any negative effect to have multiple launchers at a time?
extra launchers run in the background, but there shouldn't be any negative effects

you can force close tw if u think it's running. Just go to manage applications and select it from the list.
From my understanding though, when you install launcher pro and assign the home button to always use it, tw doesn't run in the background or even start with the phone.

Not only does twlauncher always run, it runs as a foreground app 100% of the time.

Yep, I'm trying systempanel lite from the market as a way to monitor processes & it always shows TW running & you can't keep it off unlike senseUI.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
there is a way to do it, you have to put the Launcher of ur choosing into the system/app folder and if u change the tw30launcher.apk file name to tw30launcher.old(this way u dont have to delete it and u can just change it back to .apk when u want to start using it again) it will not let tw run in the background cuz it wont be able to read the file. When u first change the file name tw will fc like crazy all u have to do is restart ur phone and it will just boot into the other launcher by default. I'm doing this with LauncherPro and LP seems to run faster being in the system folder than in the data folder anyway =D. this all can be done with Rootexplorer
I suggest you try that before reccomending it.
already done it, it was done already some time back I can't remember if the thread is in dev.or themes but it would be one of the earlier post. I said it causes fcs at first until restart so I did give warning on that but it works with no problems and I'm not the first to do this
edit: it is in development and the thread is called "Replace stock launcher"
Sent from my LV-Voodoo Fascinate using XDA App
This was my thread actually, and your statement is correct. You will fc until reboot, then all will be well. The running launcher integrates, and moving it results in bedlam for a second.
Just make sure you have the replacement launcher in the system/app directory before you move touchwiz out.
This is an old trick, just a new phone.

Same problem here. Every app I disabled disappeared from launcher except for Amazon MP3, and it's driving me nuts
You could "freeze" the app with titanium backup, which removes the shortcut icon and makes sure the app cant start. Big advantage is that you can still install OTA's. It comes with a price tho..

Freeze is the same thing as pm disable. And it doesn't work with Amazon MP3. It stays in the launcher and crashes when trying to launch it.

AAAHH Im in the same boat too, there must be a way..
If you have permanent root, and Titanium Bakcup, you should be able to permanently removed the app. Just go the backup/restore tab at the top, go the app you want to remove (Amazon mp3) and hold it for a while...there should be an option for forced removed the app. The phone will then reboot itself, and once rebooted you will find it is completely gone. The only down side is you cant update OTA anymore. But really who cares? very soon we will see custom ROMs popping up everywhere. I am pretty sure they will contain the latest updates.
I haven't tried it myself yet, but I found this on another forum:
com.amazon.mp3/com.amazon.mp3.client.activity.LauncherActivity
Hope this works

^ *sigh* There's still a need for it from time to time. That's why it was included in the original ROM, and even my Samsung has it too.
OP, you're stuck with "force stop" or you can download this:
https://market.android.com/details?id=biz.stachibana.FroyoTaskKiller
^ which basically does the same thing as "force stop" but it saves you a few steps to get there, plus it lets you know what apps are also running (which is nice to know in case you need to single out a rogue app on your phone).
It's not as good as the stock task killer, but it will stop any app and sniff out the rogue ones.
Hope that helps...
Ok, just looked and I am running Greyblur and it has the stock task killer still there. Also on the gingerblur thread or site they have a zip file of stick bloatware, could be there.

If you download Autostarts or AutoRun Manager, you'll see apps that restart or start for such asinine reasons. After powering up or rebooting, many apps are set to startup even if you don't use them often. For example, the eBay app will start in the background for such system events as "Application Replaced" or "External apps available". So when I insert my microSD card and I have some .apks backed up on it by Astro, why should the eBay app start up in the background because the media scanner detected there are apks. Don't get me started on Google Maps, there are all sorts of crap that it starts for. I only want GoogleMaps running when I need it running, not when I install a new app or if I unistall an app or replace an app. While it might be great to have an instant lock on my location so I can instantly add to Latitude(which I don't use), it kinda sucks that I'll also be grabbing my charger sooner since it's running in the background.
Most good task managers will help kill those apps and have the option to put certain apps on an exclude to kill list, which gives you control of what is running and what is not. A good way to figure things out is to kill all your running apps in the task manager and see what will restart. You can put the ones you want and need running, such as widgets and apps that get updates, on an exclude to kill list...that helps with the whole "battery drains because app keeps having to restart" argument as to why task managers are "bad." I use Autostarts to prevent apps i don't want running from starting for useless reasons and Advanced Task Manager to force close ones when I don't need them any longer. However, there is a learning curve as to what you shutdown or prevent from running, as it may affect other apps.

First check what you have installed recently. Could be one of those apps give spam notifications. I saw something similar on my bro-in-law phone and that was because he installed some kind of "enhancement" program to make his phone run more efficient (it didn't help bytheway).
Also, since you didn't say what OS you're running, 4.0+ has the option to disable notifications when you go to settings>applications>app name. If you find its an app you need, then that might help.
If you thinks its beyond this, then install lookout or norton from the market.
It's not malware, they're called push notification ads. Just download "Ad Blocker" (root required) from the market and it will tell you which app(s) is doing this. You can also choose to delete it from within the app.
Pretty handy.

However I have the list of apps I installed because I sent it to the author of push detector. How can I send it to you? I just don't want to post it here.
I have another finding, which seems odd to me: I set the home page of chrome to be blank, and I double checked that, but each time I open the browser it always opens a search page with a lot of informations (looks like a portal but I don't like it). How can I know which app replaces my home page with such rubish?
Is it possible the 3G provider does this kind of things? (notification ads and home replacement)?

No, your network provider would have nothing to do with push notification ads or homepage replacement. And as for setting your homepage in Google chrome, are you talking about the desktop version?
