[Q] Wireless auto-activated on Gingerblur - Atrix 4G General

Hi,
I just installed Gingerblur 3.1, and I have a problem with the WiFi (I can't post in the original thread because they are asking for at least 10 messages to start posting in that forum, and I think with all my respect that that's a ridiculous).
Back to the problem. My WiFi is automatically activated after I unlock the screen, even if I disable it before, when lock then unlock the screen, it's on again. That's kind of frustrating because it consumes a lot of battery.
Thanks for any help.

I think the OP is talking about the fact they don't want it coming on at all so as to save battery.
I turn my WiFi off when at work to save battery life because our WiFi isn't setup properly yet here. I have no issues with it turning on until I want it to. I too am on GingerBlur 3.1. Sorry I can't help, and I can't duplicate your problem. When I disable my WiFi it stays off.

After reading the op again, I think your right. I misunderstood. My WiFi also stays off when I have it disabled.
http://goo.gl/cVWaQ is a great app to help you remember to turn off your wifi when its not in use. The Power Control widget is a great help as well.

keep wifi connection alive on standby

there is a significant problem i just found out (i have been using symbian before).
wifi connection will not stay connected when the phone turns off in standby mode?
i really need to keep the connection alive.
i could uncheck 'turn off in xx minutes', but then the display will stay dimmed
which is not a good solution for me. power/saving bar is on full left, also disconnect wifi in xx minutes is disabled.
so, how do i do that even when the lights are off? dont tell me there is no way for that.
You need to install Advanced Configuration Tool.
http://julien.schapman.free.fr/touchxperience/advanced-configuration-tool.php
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=317070
There's an option you can tick to get the wifi to stay alive whilst it's on standby.
thank you for mentioning this program. it is quite useful
i have tried the advanced config tool to keep wifi connection, but it seems not working.
as soon the light turns off, wifi gets disconnected. and it gets reconnected immediately when it's back on
i have changed both:
'turn off wifi if no activity: no'
'wifi auto-off timeout to 9000000'
is there another setting i am missing or am i doing something wrong?

I can't find the option to keep the wi-fi on during standby. I have the config prog installed, and have read the documentation, but can't find the option to keep the wi-fi on during standby!
Edit, sorry my mistake.
Yes I'm having the same problem also it reconnects fine.
But you are right it should keep alive even in standbye.
Hi,
I used HD Tweak to change this setting. Works perfectly, now WiFi stays connected when the Phone is in StandBy

Thanks . I just forgot this was the way to go ...
But keep in mind that this option will SUCK all your battery very soon.....
Why dont you just turn the backlight off instead of standby when you want wifi to stay on. This way you dont need to mess with wifi setting.

I am using AE Button which has an option to turn backlight off.
btw: I am using version 2.6.3 which I think have a bug ie if you the use the option inside AEB to turn on wifi, the wifi stays on even if you press the top power-off button. This "bugged" version fits your requirement nicely.

And what about Heat up problem?? Keeping Wifi on will turn your HD into an oven - unless you keep it ventilated all the time

Same thing for me
the problem is wifi scanning.
on my old Nokia N95 (Symbian OS) i could turn off wifi scanning BUT keep the wifi connected to the router. that resulted being connected to something without constantly scanning for new routers or access points.
i dont know why but in all WM devices we do not have a possibility to turn off wifi scanning at all while keeping the wifi sesstion running.

Wireless deactivates itself *after* standby

Hi,
since I upgraded to Froyo, wireless keeps deactivating itself after standby. I'm perfectly fine with wireless being off during standby, but it's quite annoying to switch it on manually several times a day.
Has anyone come across this?
Best regards
Christophe
Change the wifi sleep policy to 'never', that might work.

Settings > Wireless & networks > Wifi settings > (Press menu - advanced) > Wifi sleep policy bla bla.

[FIX] Stock Lollipop 5.0.2 Wi-Fi Battery Drain Issue

If you are on Stock Motorola Lollipop 5.0.2, check your Battery History in System Settings - you may notice Wi-Fi is constantly active, even when you turn it off.
In my case, the following setting in Viber was the cause: Settings > General > Wi-Fi sleep policy > Change to 'Use device's settings'
Instructions:
Firstly, go to: Settings > Wi-Fi > Advanced Wi-Fi > Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep > Change to 'Never.'
The issue appears to be that certain apps are keeping Wi-Fi active in Lollipop. Not every app may offer this setting related to 'sleep policy', a workaround is to use the App Settings Xposed Module - which allows you to disable such a permission for individual apps.
The permission can be known as: Change_Network_State.
After making these changes you may need to turn off Wi-Fi and restart phone.

This is true, when phone sleeps - there is no Wi-Fi data connection.
Rather than leaving Wi-Fi on however, some people might prefer the phone wakes up every 15 minutes / 30 minutes / 1 hour, and enables Wi-Fi for 1 minute - allowing any messages to arrive. Many apps can do this, one example is DS Battery Saver.
There is also an argument that if you use Wi-Fi a lot, it's better to leave Wi-Fi on during sleep, because excessively enabling and disabling it is costly in terms of battery-life.
I've been using stock Lollipop on XT1008(Moto G Forte, I read it was just a "commercial" variant of the XT1032).
As far as I can tell, my phone doesn't report high Wi-Fi usage, but I disabled an option that I think it´s more responsible than the one mentioned here, that's "Search Always Available", this one was turning on my wifi when I even shut it down, wasting more battery than keeping it on.
Currently, my phone has been on like 13 hours and has 13% left, with a WiFi usage around 85% of the time.
Thanks for making us aware of that option in Viber.
But even after disabling that option in Viber, in the battery graphic seems like wi-fi is always active. Is it because I will also need to set "Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep" to "never"? But if it's set to never, doesn't it mean that when phone screen is off, it automatically switches off wi-fi even if you kept it on from the toggle?

Yes, 'never' means Wi-Fi is off when phone is sleeping. There is also the advance Wi-Fi option 'Scanning always available - which' you might want to disable.
Double check you have changed the setting in Viber, and you may need to reboot phone. It's also possible another app is causing Wi-Fi to always be active, for some it's Whatsapp.

Ok so that option works as I thought, so for correctly receiving notifications with screen off it should be set on "always". I double checked on Viber's option and it's set correctly, then rebooted, plus scanning always available is off, geolocation (which can keep wi-fi on) is off and apparently there are no things that can keep wi-fi on.
Whatsapp does not allow to set wi-fi behavior, and the strange thing is that I have the same apps I had on Kitkat, where I didn't have such problem of viewing in battery graphic.
I am having the doubt if this may be only a Lollipop graphic issue or if wi-fi actually stays on...

That's why I mention the 'App Settings' module in OP. I believe Whatsapp can and does cause this issue - there is just no setting within the app itself. You can check what permissions apps have by using 'App Settings.'

No. Root would be necessary for changing permissions. However this issue may have been resolved in Android 5.1 - removing the need for this fix.
Wifi should be lefy alone as default to "never sleep"
Wifi should never sleep, even if the phone's cpu sleeps. Wifi will receive messages from whatsapp or whatever and wake up the cpu.
But if you put wifi chip to sleep, the phone will connect using 2g or worse, 3g or HSPA, and drain even more battery.
Wifi comes by default to "never sleep" for this reason, it is more battery efficient than 2g/3g.
And if you dont have wifi at home, all you have to do is slide down the menu and turn of Wifi. No need to change internal configuration on behaviour who only make things worse.
On the other hand, Viber is known for years to be a battery abuser.
I have been using android for years, and wifi policy was always the same, and my phones have idle times of several days
i even published some screen shots of my moto defy and moto G with a full week Idle without charging.with whatsapp and Wifi polocy never sleep.. With viber i wouldnt even try to make it last 2 days.

[Q] Why is my WiFi always on?

Why is my WiFi always on? Relevant screenshot: https://i.imgur.com/8ZI49P6.png
WiFi is manually toggled off.
WiFi scanning in Settings > Location > Advanced is turned off
I get that there are wake issues in my screenshot, but that's more likely to deal with Facebook than anything. Still doesn't explain why WiFi is always on.
Edit 31-JAN-2016: So I tried the following in my testing
Charge phone to 100%
Turn Off WiFi
Check battery screen, phone seems to show WiFi on still
Reboot
Notice that WiFi is off on the battery screen.
However maybe a minute later, it seems to "turn back on" (SEE SCREENSHOT)
Have you checked your Location scanning settings as well?
Is Wi-Fi scanning turned off there too?

I have the same problem too.
If you go into the dialer and try searching on a company does it prompt to turn on wifi scanning?
Try rebooting
Same problem here.... Reboot doesn't help.

Do you guys by any chance have any of these apps installed? I'm suspecting it has something to do with these.
My testing so far is as follows:
Turn off Wifi
See that WiFi is still on in Battery Screen
Greenify the list of apps above
See that WiFI is still on in battery screen
Reboot
WiFi no longer shows as on
I'm going to do further testing to see. This is inconclusive so far.

Wifi toggle is possessed?

This is starting to annoy me. At work and home I'm on wifi all the time. It is faster, less latency, and is all around better than Sprint LTE here.
The v20 likes to toggle off my wifi when screen is off. Which I could understand if say overnight and not used for 8 hours....but simply at work here, 30 minutes or an hour-wifi, wake the screen, is toggled off. Which wouldn't be bad if the phone toggled-on when I woke it up...Which if it did I wouldn't be posting. I've so far tried disabling all the wifi "power saving" toggles in Wifi>Advanced still does it.
Note it doesn't seem correlated to signal strength. I'll be in the same room as the router, and it'll toggle-off wifi. Even tried setting up a Smart Location to keep wifi on-didn't help.
Ideas? Exorcisms?

I'm sure you've already done this, but in Wifi>Advanced, under "useful settings (tmobile version, anyway)," there's an option for "Keep Wi-Fi on when screen is off." Make sure that's set to yes.
What ocelot4ark mentioned, under advance > Keep wifi on during sleep set to always.

Yup already set to "Yes".
You might have those fake apps which claim to increase your speed
Check all your smart settings as well... There are a few possibilities for auto shut off in there as well

Mine's been doing the same thing since I got it on 10/18. Factory reset didn't fix it. Drives me nuts when I'm casting and I unlock the screen, I have to reconnect it to whatever I am casting. And yes the first thing I checked was to make sure wifi was set to always on.
My Wi-Fi is also ****ing around now. Anyone have a solution yet? This is getting stupid now.
