Xperia ARC Software Upgrade ??? - Xperia Arc General

Hi Guys ..
First of All Thank U to Everyone for your support to this Forum.
Its the Best on the Net.
Today i had gone to purchase the Xperia ARC at Sony's Authorized dealer here
in Gujarat, India.
To my utter surprise and astonishment the Dealer told me that Xperia ARC was unavailable for Sale as the Company is doing some Software
Upgrade(Tinkering) ???
As far as this Reliable Forum goes ... And upon my Extensive Googling ...
I couldn't find an answer for this type of Shortage Issue !
As far as my knowledge goes there is No such thing but....
Is it True .. that there is some OS tinkering is going on ?
Or that there actually is a Shortage of Hardware Units somewhere ?
Anyways ... he is to call me in the Next 3 days.

Could be correct, I've read an article about Blackberry having the same problem in India (and some other countries).
However, there is definitively hardware unit shortage as well. (Probably due to the earthquake in Japan, at least that's the official reason they delayed Xperia Neo.) Here in Germany, e.g., you can only buy one colour and it's sold out in many shops. Unfortunately, this also keeps the prices high.

Hmm ... I think its the Hardware Supply Issues based on the Report from Germany.. although in India color is not the issue.
Also Blackberry problem is totally different from ARC
Hope I get it ASAP. Can't wait No more.

when I went to get the Arc none of the stores in Coventry (UK) had it....carphonwarehouse told me it wud come by mid-may...o2 actually said that there was some software issues with the Arc and then later they said tht it was for the Play...finally I got it online..

not at all,arc is available all over india...........there might be some issues with ur local retailer...........the fact is arc is available all over india and also with most of the online retailers in india..........

Happy i got it as soon as i did, cause sounds like its almost impossible to get now!

SE have confirmed that there is a hardware shortage due to the problems in japan.. however they have also said that there will be a firmware you're shortly after release, which I believe there will be more information released about tomorrow.

100% True. This is specially we are running v2.3.2 and v2.3.4 is available for N1. I believe Google also going to announce v2.4 shortly and we don't want another delay of the OS.
Hope SE learn from the X10's mistakes.

Facebook integration, of all things... wish they would fix some bugs instead. ^^

I don't really like the new upgrade tho, sine I barely use facebook....

Launcher? Are you sure? I don't use that stock launcher anyway

@cokey77, cant help about your credit rating, but the jumping from 3g to edge was probably due to poor coverage from being inside your house. There was probably nothing wrong at all with the phone you had.

reply from SE regards "Froyo update on Xperia X10"

I posted the petition link on the Sony Ericsson UK and global Facebook sites and got the following reply from SE:
“Hi Mark, Thank you for your feedback regarding the Sony Ericsson X10’s Android upgrade.
We appreciate your feedback regarding this and have passed this on to the relevant department. We can confirm that this is something our developers are currently looking into and will provide further information once this is available.

That does sound promising. To be fair, they couldn't have missed the huge reaction from their customers. Well over2000 responses to the petition already and it's only been a couple of days. Looking brighter?

Hopefully that is the reason that the incremental upgrade which was due "a couple of weeks" from May 5th has not materialised. Hopefully their best bods are focussing on seeing if 2.2 is a possibility....
No doubt their developers have X10 phones andthemselves would like their phones to be running 2.2...

... dont worry about that, this update was part of development for X10mini (pro), so we should see it in the next weeks.
and yes, 2.1 and NO 2.2 (froyo) brings only bad vibes for SE (and their future)
Something tells me that although the response sounds promising SE won’t change from their original plan. The 2000+ votes (As good as this is) only accounts for a fraction of the x10 owners out there.
Leaving out Froyo until a completely new line of phones can be used as a sell tool and a reason to adopt any new android phones they release where as if the x10 get the 2.2 now the new line would have to have more hardware advances to prove their worth increasing cost. Judging the hardware cut backs SE made with its flagship device most people can predict or assume the next wave of SE android phones will follow suit.
The petition needs to reach beyond the blogs to really make a difference, If the Japanese got wind of the petition and signed up that would really open SE eyes and i'm sure the speed increase of 2.2 would be enough to get them on board. Any ideas how?

No hope.
Just a standard message ...
Where did you see hope there?
Well, it is something that should have been done. Since this is the best SE phone in a long time, with a potential to get better.
So if they are choosing to apply this update... Then I would assume that I would be even more satisfied with my phone. But right now, is the thing that annoys me the most.. That I can't buy applications here in Norway yet.
And I can do it in Morocco, and that country isn't on the list either.
All I can say that 2.2 finally provides bluetooth functionality for voice dial.
In places where it is illegal to hold a cellphone while driving, voice dialing using bluetooth is an extremely useful function. Android devices have been lacking this since 1.5 cupcake. Google finally added full bluetooth functionality on 2.2. I hope SE does the right thing and updates the X10 to reflect this.
It is very annoying when Apple updates the Iphone constantly and Android phones are stuck on whichever hardware manufacturer schedule to make its phone unique (e.g. sense, timescape, touchflow).
I think Google has the correct idea of separating future updates from the unique modifications that the manufacturers want. But for that to happen, all phones have to reach 2.2. first.
i work in a bar in malmö, sweden which the nearest city to where se have a rather huge campus there, anyway, i got a saw a japenese guy with an x10 and told him that we have the same phones, i told him that the x10 really needs froyo to be updated onto it and he told me that it will prob be on it sooner than you think.
he explained to me that they knew about people crying out for 2.1 and well get it sooner aswell!!
is there light at the end of the tunnel??

They are still lacking the AVRCP profile update. It is still stuck on v1.0.. when the latest version is v1.4
Yep. I bought an MW600 as it was advertised that it's fully compatible with X10, but after three months of emails flying around, SE concluded that it's not fully compatible due to Android's limitation on AVRCP profile.
For MW600 to work fully with X10, we need AVRCP 1.3 or above!!
Maybe we can stress SE to roll out an update for security reason? These few days, Malware, backdoors and trojans in official market place became hot topic.
And quote from CNET :
At least 50,000 people had downloaded the apps in question, according to enthusiast site AndroidCentral. However, many of those potentially infected may have been protected by staying current with the latest Android updates. AndroidCentral notes that Google actually patched its source code to prevent this type of exploit for users running Android 2.2.2 or higher and that the vulnerability doesn't exist at all in Gingerbread, aka Android 2.3.

The attack is an exploit, they have to patch it.
You need to do a full system wipe and reset your phone completely, the data wipe and reset from settings may not be enough. This means ODIN, RUU's, .sbf files or a trip to your carrier store if this is beyond your capabilities.

Help me get optus to answer my question

We were promised by Optus that mid November we would get Froyo. Hit them up on @Optus on twitter or their support email. If more people start asking then we will actually get an answer.
At the rate it's going, we might well be the very last people in the world to get Froyo for our devices, even though we were some of the earliest adopters for the handset.
Keep us updated on your progress mate. I don;t have a twitter account but am in the same books as you.
I have rung them a few times but they are less then knowledgeable with a response.
Most of them you talk to don't have a clue what your talking about. ie. Firmware what?
Then try and direct you to call Samsung.
The last time I spoke to Samsung in Australia they couldn't provide any details at all.
A sad sad state of affairs to be sure.
This was posted on another forum I'm a member of (not phone related, just a Galaxy S thread). Sorry, I don't have links to back it up, so take it with a grain of salt.
From Optus Business Blog: dt. 16/11
.................
News: Android 2.2 for Samsung Galaxy S is now available
16/11/2010
Owners of Samsung's Galaxy S line of phones have been patiently waiting for the Android 2.2 update that many other Android owners have had for months, and now it looks like the wait may finally be over.
Samsung has announced that later tonight, at 8:00 PM, a download will become available to SamsungMobile.com that will be compatible with all Galaxy S devices, upgrading them to Android 2.2.
The news comes after Google and Samsung have continuously been dodgy about details regarding the update for Samsung's Android-powered smartphones. To date, the only handsets to receive the upgrade have been phones manufactured by other companies. Only about a quarter of all Android users have upgraded their device to the latest OS.
Many of those who haven't upgraded simply have a phone that is too outdated to receive it. But the Galaxy S platform is one of the most technically adept on the market right now and is more than capable of running Froyo.
Exactly what has been causing the hold-up is anyone's guess, but it's been a real problem for Samsung as it tries to market the devices.
Android 2.2 brings with it features like full browser support for the latest Flash video standard, the ability to use your phone as a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot, and enhanced voice controls for all aspects of the device. It should be a welcome addition to the Galaxy S family.

This is from a US news website called TGDaily which was talking about the update but he missed the mark for sure.
It's not specifically related to OPTUS at all but a general comment stating Froyo was now available.
When you go to the Samsungmobile.com website you have to pick a region.
Australia takes you to that regions site and the Kies version here is way way old 1.5.1.10083
When you install this Kies, it will prompt you to update to the newer version.
BUT.......no Froyo.
Sad sad sad.

All of this was proven to be wrong, and was copied from a blog entry from the day before from TG Daily.
It was promptly removed from the Optus blog.
Optus made an announcement on Twitter that Samsung delivered to them around 01/11/2010 the new firmware. They had to create their optus customisation for it and intended to release it mid november. Now its the 19th and it still isn't out. I figure anyone who cares should go put a question to them @Optus or their support email until we get an answer.
I don't mind the wait as such, it's just that I want to know what they are doing. I hate "two more weeks". IF they could say we are having trouble getting the widget to work and we want that working before we release, then OK, but silence is just downright frustrating!
Why the heck do you need the Optus customisations for? It's not like you get extra wallpapers or optimisations just a bunch of useless widgets and shortcuts but whatever.
I hope official firmware from Optus is better than Nordic JPA version.
I have JPA Froyo on my optus GS via Reg hack. Wifi is ify and phone lags...
Put same app side by side on GS and iPhone, GS one is slow.
EG. Kids only want to use iPhone for Talking Tomcat because it does not miss every second word.
Sad!
I was in the same boat as you guys not long ago. Waiting for Optus to release their modified firmware, checking kies day to day. I got kinda fed up waiting, figured that the firmware is of course just going to include all the optus and samsung bloatware to slow down the phone. Not to mention relying on kies to work properly.
So in the end I just put Dark's Rom on. works fantastically really. learnt how to do it (easy guide in his thread) and actually did it in under half an hour. the actual doing it only takes like 10 minutes. I know it's not for everyone, but i'm so glad I decided to go down that route rather than rely on optus.
I don't understand why you guys have to know what's going on all the time.. Optus have stated that their release intention is "By the end of November", for quite some time now.
Knowing exactly what's going on won't get you the release any faster, it serves no purpose but to waste their time by answering the children in the back seat "Are we there yet, are we there yet, are we there yet".
We'll get there, when we get there.
Perhaps if December comes along, and it's still not release, THEN start nagging.
Or just abandon all hope and flash a rom! I mean you are on xda after all.
I was waiting with my old eclair rom but went and flashed docs rom. I only regret not doing it sooner.

Agreed, Custom firmware is guaranteed better than Optus bloatware.
Insanity, Spike Speedy v3 and Darky's v4.1 are all perfect for quick, fully optimised and bloat-free roms.

Alot of custom firmware comes with the Optus APN, the one I'm using at the moment came with it.
Which is Insanity.. Very barebones but you can easily install whatever stock apk's you want via the included link he gave to them on his thread.
If you want the Optus apk's (Why on earth you would is beyond me..) I'm almost sure you could get them off optus zoo, just give Optus a call and find out if you have any troubles I guess.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9264973&postcount=1
Edit: Also the Optus APN info can easily be added to the phone manually by going to Wireless and network > mobile networks > Access Point Names > press menu button, new APN
and the information for the APN (and all other Aussy ones) is here: http://ausdroid.net/apns/
I'm not neccessarily after a date, I want a reason. If they would just let us know that they really are still working on it, they aren't stuck with a resource problem or something like that then OK. I just hate it when they leave you with no news.
And my original statement still stands that we may well be the last carrier to actually get Froyo. I want the official one because I'm going into Optus if it doesn't fix the GPS for a warranty claim.
I want to know the date so I know when I can use the phone to it's full ability as advertised!

Indeed, I feel your pain. I mean what a terrible tragedy, having to wait almost a full month before a slightly updated operating system for your mobile phone becomes available. Nobody should have to bear such a tragic burden in their life. Have you asked whether the European Commission on Human Rights will take your case up?
On the other hand, you could just go to Argos and buy one - they are advertising that their Streaks come with 2.2.
@philip...ha ha I am sure you are being sarcastic there...
no thanks but Ill stick to my current o2 locked streak...cause currenly having 2.1 instead of 2.2 doesnt really make a big difference to my existance on earth...
it's just the 'customer unawareness' of dell/o2 which bothers me...nuthin else..
Dell, carriers?
If Dell "officially" releases the update, then the carriers pack their crap onto the update, does Dell have to check it for compatibility before the carriers sign off on it? Or do the carriers send their crap to Dell, dell packages it into their OS, then tests it, and then the carriers sign off on it?
God knows I wouldn't defend the manufacturer or the carrier, but does anyone know the procedure?
THIS is a glaring example of why carriers need to get the $*#&% out of the hardware/software side of the wireless phone business, and become pipes.
(In the USA) it use to be, you provide the phone, we provide the dial tone.
Now, I'm not naive enough to know why the carriers want to stay in the hardware
side of the business, but, as phones, software evolve, they need to seriously consider changing (in the USA) their business model.
At least DELL UK sell accessories for the streak........we have nothing in Australia
Not even a charger!!!
f**k the dell and o2 upgrading to 2.2 with dj steve had enough with their sh*t
we the first person to buy these f*cking device in uk and we are getting at last seriously love the device but dell a complete dirt company to deal with
To be fair, 02 added very little bloat to the Streak. Either 1.6 or 2.2. I personally would rather wait a couple of weeks for them to sort out the bugs in the thus far released 2.2 builds before it hits O2.
I'm currently using 2.1 with a mildly tweaked build.prop & ADW Launcher and other than the lack of flash it isn't lacking much.
Maybe I'm just more chilled as I'm getting older but I don't really see that the sky is falling down just because I have to wait a few days more for a phone firmware update.
Dell are fixing some of the bugs (hopefully more than some) in the initial 00 released roms..
you wouldn't want them to send the o2 ones out with something that stopped you watching iplayer would you?
Same here stateside...would rather wait until it is RIGHT...before updating.
When I was younger, as soon as a point release would come out, I'd jump on it.
Not so much anymore. I want stable.
I use to go bleeding edge on hardware for the PC, tweaking and tweaking to get the performance, and then living with unstable systems.
Last pc I built replaced one that I built and was stable for over six years, running 24/7. The one I built, should be as stable for another six.

2.3.4 still on the horizon.....come and pray for it in this thread

Good evening guys and girls,
Had a surprise visit from a Samsung UK field rep today, who when asked about 2.3.4, he said his Galaxy S2 already running a build and had been for 3 weeks, he said it was nice and stable, didn't get chance to nab a photo but he said it was supposed to start rolling out from around the 10th of June to XEU handsets in the UK.
His handset was KE6 and KE9
Crossing my fingers big time.
Hope it will fix battery drain.
That would be nice.
This is exciting to hear. Thanks for sharing. Always look forward to a new firmware as it can sometimes fix little issues here and there
This actually confirms what I got told my a SammySon engineer and also what balenax has posted on here.
this is great news, will developers of the popular roms need to start from scratch?
What are the news/addition of android 2.3.4?
Just my luck as I'll be out of town till the 13th so no pc access to update :|
Sounds good, coming from an iPhone I still don't know what the OS updates for androids look like yet

they change from manufacturer to manufacturer, not very much tied to android, so your experience could vary between samsung, htc, motorola, google itself, etc

His was a development build so anything can change.
Also I don't suffer from the yellow tinge that was mentioned above so didn't ask. Sorry.
really hope we get 2.3.4 soon, this battery life sucks.
if we are using a UK version in the U.S do you think we will get the ota update or will we have to wait until someone posts it on the forum?
I hope it will stop the battery drain and the smartphone heat (sometimes)!
Do you think we will have to reset the phone or are we able to flashing over existing KE7(currently installed)?

like x10 series( X10 mini , mini pro ) ... do you remember ?

oh shiiiiit
that is my fault , i should leave sony since they lied to me on X10 series ... **** **** shiiiiit.
oh sorry
Hi guys
last week i've created a thread by named " hey sony , any update... "
most of people replied my post and talked rudely ...
anyway ,
now , i know that my opinion was true , sony is liar. they did again what they did on x10 series to us. they said x10 mini and mini pro can't run 2.1 froyo , but developers ported gingerbreads , also ICS on x10 series .
maybe this is end of time for sony , lie lie lie ...
actually , why should we buy somethings like xperia play 2 with thousands of false promises .
why should we trust Sony promises . Sony is nothing ,do they have powerful engineers ? Sony even can't support its specs ( oh god damn )...
i know that somee of kids want to reply again and say that my words are mere lie, sony is #1 , BLUHBLUHBLUH ...
totally , I just want to say :
without ICS update = no hope on sony anymore , none specs ...
I have similiar feelings like you, cause I had X10 too, and this is deja vu....Completely disappointed, but I know we (Devs) will make better ICS ROMs than Sony, we just need the latest sources. No bad words about Sony - they're good corporation, but I don't have luck with their smartphones, so I think never more Xperia - but other Sony stuff is great . Terrible info about no ICS...
Why leave sony, you have so much in common with them
Sony has been working hard on making an ICS update for the Xperia Play, and after so much testing they saw that it wouldn't give a good experience on this device because the hardware requirements for ICS.
Is this a company you can't trust with? Do you prefer a company that wouldn't even try to port ICS to the device?
Sony allways informed us about what they were doing. A lot months ago they opened a web informing what procedures they have to follow to make an Android update, they answered questions, and they even made an open beta to let users say what they think about the stability of ICS on our device.
Do you prefer a company that doesn't do all these things?
Are you angry because the Xplay won't get ICS? Ok, I'm angry too. But don't say thing like "oh Sony that bad company" because they gave a very good user support.
Be more mature and think what you say.
I might as well save one of my earlier posts into Notepad for these threads....Here we go
"There is no point, at all, in getting angry about this. They rolled out the beta as a way for the community to test and give feedback on what works and what doesnt. It did what a beta is designed to do. Unfortunately for Sony, the gamepad on the Play came back and kicked them right where it hurts. Id rather have a gaming device that works than one that doesnt.
To put it simply: All PS3/Xbox/PC users. Imagine if Sony or Microsoft rolled out a new OS that looked nice BUT......Controllers/Keyboard and Mouse support didnt work. Sure, you have a nice looking OS but the chief reason for buying the machine is gone.
People in here need to calm the hell down. Its not, I repeat, NOT...Sonys fault"
STOP...BLAMING...SONY
i found this rather interesting this post

not sure yet not due an upgrade till october but going to be doing my research on whatever company has the best out
and then when i get my new phone im probly going to record myself smashing up the xperia play it will help me feel better
Sigh.. after coming from a x10 mini pro this is rather annoying.
And I was recently interested in getting a Xperia Arc S or Xperia S, not that I hate sony now but I'm kinda bitter on them right now that I don't want them to have a penny from me anymore, but who knows if I'll change my mind later. Just hope they reconsider or at least release a more developed beta version.
Just doesn't feel good to be let down once again.

Yeah, I feel with you about leaving the Sony-scene and move on since they aren't that loyal to their customers after all.
But I will still have my Xperia Play as my main device and stick around with it since I still can call with it and I bought it to play and FPse is one of the few emulators I need in ICS and I'm sure the great devs here at XDA will bring some real good ICS-ROMs as I have already seen and tried a couple, like KA13 and ICS++, and AOKP with more

i'm sure that XDA's developers can make ICS better that sony , like what they did on our x10 mini-mini pro ...
sony-mobile allways say that they have expert engineers ... ( shiiit )
so , xda's developers are more expert than sony's engineers ???!!!
plus , they only need dommlord , jjkkyu , bin4ry ... ?
i'm sure that sony is liar . just wait 4 or five mounths , maybe sony wants to make new play-xperia ! ( something like xperia play 2 ) ! and that is reason to leave our xperia play without hard working on update .
on 2010 , they stopped working on X10 series , just because of 2011 series !
just look at apple updates , they support their specs for 3 years ,!unfortunately , now i can understand , why apple owners , allways laugh at us !
