Phones4u, CPW, O2.. - Galaxy S II General

Just finished my second paper today (finals exam) and straight went to city centre to hunt for SGS II. Long story short, all of them (phones4u, CPW, O2) doesn't want to sell me PAYG.
Me: Do you hv SGS II in store right now?
Salesman: Yeah, we've lots of them
Me: Great, well I want to get PAYG
Salesman: *face expression change* Oh, we don't have much stock now. Only 3 atm for contract.
Me: You just said you got lots of them? Anyway, your advert show that I can buy PAYG?
Salesman: Yeah but we can't sell PAYG to you as there is no stock for PAYG handset.
PS: Above conversation is about the same with all the shop I went except one of the three phones4u shop, where things are going a little weird here.
Me: Do you sell SGS II PAYG?
Phones4u: Yeah, we have stock right now. *check price* Is £530
Me: *surprise* Oh, I thought it was £499.99 because that is what stated on your advert. *Pointed out at the advert*
Phones4u: *went and have a look* If you take that the phone will be locked.
Me: Locked? By which network?
Phones4u: Which ever network you choose on your new PAYG sim.
Me: *wondering, is this a scam?" Oh, OK. Thanks.
I think he is some sort of supervisor there coz I was talking to this guy first then he went and ask his supervisor (the guy above). And I keep wondering in my head is this possible that the phone can be locked by any network I choose as my PAYG sim?
Reach home straight order from O2 website. Been go in and out almost 10 phone shop in the city and all of them refuse to sell me PAYG / Sim free except for Three but they told me to come back on Friday. Really hate the culture.
Enough of my rant.

UK: In stock at Vodafone

Hi guys
Went to 02 shop today in Chester to see if any news: The staff hadnt even heard of the X1.
Went round the corner to Vodafone expecting the same thing but imagine my suprise when I was told it was in stock. Within 30 minutes I had purchased my new X1!
Yet to have a proper play but smaller and lighter than I imagined.
Andrew
Locked or unlocked?
5th of November...
Thats when most dutch shops should have the Xperia. Atleast my local Belcompany store will have it..
Branded or not?
From the pics posted on other forums, it's branded, but not that big a deal.

Thanks for the photos, but apart from the appearence the big question is if they have messed up with the rom.
Now we see where the dealy has come from! Making all the crap boxes and literature to acompany the naf Vodafone logos phone with its bloated Vodafone crappy ROM.
When will service providers learn its not what the end user wants?!?!?!

The two pictures of the Vodafone X1 above were taken by me yesterday. I really don't think they've messed with it much at all branding-wise. The Vodafone logo is black and doesn't stick out like the red one would have, an unbranded X1 just has "X1" written in that space, so it's not a huge change.
They've pre-loaded a few 'applications' which are mainly links to open Vodafone Live and their data-powered GPS site. Apart from that and a few bookmarks in Opera/PIE, I don't see too much to complain about, it still has the HTC apps like the streaming media player, sim manager, A-GPS data downloader, etc.
The Google panel is called the Vodafone panel, but the only real change I think is the inclusion of a few link to the Vodafone Live site and Mobile TV (streaming 3G video from Vodafone).
Difficult choice, Vodafone definitely in stock, but their 12 month contracts are rubbish:
http://shop.vodafone.co.uk/mobile-phones/pay-monthly/sony-ericsson/X1/
But T-Mobile just said they will definitely get it, but have no date yet.
Went to Vodafone and had a look at the dummy model, its tiny! I was expecting it to be bigger The keys are not too easy to type on. I had a look at a silver dummy and I really liked it, they had no stock of black or silver just the silver dummy.
They also dont sell it sim free but that dont matter as they had none in stock anyway!
I'm in a quandry as my local Vf shop is offering just the phone for £350-400! They have some on delivery tomorrow and I'm wondering wether to reserve one. My problem is that
I'm 9 months into an 18 month contract (T-mobile Flext) and so I cannot use a locked phone. Does anyone know whether the Vodafone Xperia's are locked or not?

Pretty sure Vodafone stopped locking all phones 12 months ago. Anyway my Vodafone X1 has just accepted my Orange Wednesday SIM so you should be in luck
They have them in stock in carphonewarehouse as well both on o2 and orange. This was in the brent cross shopping centre one that is though. Not too small and not too big just the right size got mine coming soon too. Although the salesman was pretty stupid saying not to buy it and was trying to sell me the blackberry claiming the sony ericsson x1 was full of bugs?!?!? i set him straight though!
The mystery deepens!
I spoke to vodafone customer services who said the phone was probably locked and only available on a contract (despite the shop having offered it for £350-400 on its own).
I don't want a contract with O2 or Vodafone so I'm going to try one last visit to the shop tomorrow morning and if that is unsuccessful then I'll get it through play (£499.99 & free delivery), SuperGPS or Handtec (next day delivery!).

Possibly hit and miss with each shop and their targets etc however even if they did sell it SIM free it's likely to be more (about £500).
My carphonewarehouse said its not out for a couple of weeks yet :O the ejits...
I only asked the vodafone shop if they did it sim free, I didnt ask them specificly if they sold just the phone on its own(but stil with crappy vodafone branding).
I would be willing to have a vodafone branded unlocked handset for £350 rather than an unbranded unlocked handset from clove play etc for £500.
This is an avenue i hadnt even thought of!

Has anyone tried bargaining with Vodafone on the phone or in store? Someone in the Touch Pro forum managed to get a free Touch Pro on a 12 month contract at £42.50 per month. Not sure if it was a business or consumer contract.
Trouble for me now though is that as this phone has taken so long to come out I'm now torn between the X1 and the Touch HD. Why couldn't SE get it shipped like the iphone, as you have to hand it to Apple for being able to get the phone in the shops six weeks after launch.

yes I got a deal with vodafone retail. I asked them if they could match onliine vodastore on a 12 month contract and they said yes. I originally wanted the 45 per month deal with 900 mins and 500 texts and handset 100. He could only find 750 mins 250 texts which I said I didn't want. we finished off on 600 mins and 500 texts for 40 a month and 100 for the phone, which is a saving of 50 compared to online and got the phone there and then.
has anyone found any better deals than the ones on the vodafone website ? if i remember, the operator's deals are usually amongst the worst around ?
i'm looking for a 12 month contract but the vodafone site only allows unlimited internet and all the other goodies on 18 month contracts. grrrrrrrrrrrr.

This is my long winded story i got a streak on sat from 02 on Sunday i read that dell are selling them unlocked so come Monday i sent the streak back to 02 as soon as it arrived
On Tuesday i ordered one from dell unlocked and they said there was a week waiting list so i went on the list.
NOW TODAY i was looking at a utube video about unboxing the streak and the guy on the vid said he had just gone into CAR PHONE and bought it Sim free and unlocked for £429 so i went on there website and it says on there its locked to 02.
So i phoned up customer services to see if it is locked or unlocked and they assure me it is unlocked Sim free unbranded and it arrives tomorrow morning so we will see then
Hi all,
Well i bought mine the day before release direct from CPW by phone and thought it was going to be unlocked as they say Sim free but until now none of the Streaks from CPW have been unlocked. Usually all phones from CPW are unlocked and Sim free just means you can buy it without a contract in this instance but i bought mine on a Mobile Broadband tariff @£25pm with 3GB of Data per month. I have to say although i had heard horror stories about 02's data speeds it has not been what i have found and am getting just under 2mbps speeds every where i have been.
As for the branding on the Streak well that really is virtually non existent it consists of an 02 splash screen on start up and some Wallpaper pictures of the 02 Dome. The only other thing they have done is set the browsers home page to 02 but that can be changed to one of your own choice as it's not locked to it and can be changed easily.
@lufc
Look forward to hearing if your is unlocked when it arrives as i know many other current users that would love to have an unlocked Streak.
Marc
UPDATE !!!!!!
Streak arrived this morning put in my TESCO Sim card and hay presto it WORKED made a phone call and all is well.
So i started to play around a bit about an hour later went to the market to download update for google maps and 10 Min's later it was still not downloading so i turned off wifi and tried to download through 3G and it would not connect, strange i thought,so i got out my VIRGIN MOBILE Sim card and placed that in the phone and hay presto it comes up THIS PHONE IS LOCKED TO THIS NETWORK. Tesco use 02 air waves that is why tesco worked so them B---ards at Car phone lied to me so sorry to every one who said it would be locked i have phoned them back up and they are going to ring me in 10 Min's looks like i will be getting one from dell after all
Hi lufc,
No problem you were only reporting what they told you and i really think the problem is calling these units Sim Free confuses everyone most probably including the poor staff member that told you and thought it was unlocked.

Streak sim unlock?

Hi guys just a bit of advice needed...
I have a o2 streak, but i want to use it on my other networks, should i wait a while for an unlock solution cos apparently the rebel sim doesnt work??
I just want to check if anyone even knows if unlocking the device is even possible? will we ever have it unlocked? And more to the point is anyone even trying to unlock it?
well, straight from the horses mouth...ie o2 is that they wont unlock a contracted phone for a 12month stint and a bought outright one (3 months) - ive just got mine from a guy that bought his outright (start of june) and got told he cant have a code til the start of sept - im currently going down another route to get the code from "a bloke i know..."
So it really depends on how you bought yours....
I bought a dell streak on ebay, And i am using an o2 payg sim in it, that i have had since dec 2009,i have applied for an unlock code from o2 by filling in there online form,as i have purchased the streak outright ,will i get it unlocked as stated in above thread, thanks.
Pretty slim my friend. If its a contract one youve got no chance - they wont unlock it for a year (i think thats already been said). Ive got a few irons in the fire at the moment, ill let you know what happens with mine once ive got my code (hopefully)

It actually means either
1. get a pay as you go o2 SIM
2. get an o2 compatible SIM
3. Get a rebel SIM
4. Pray for an unlock code
I did 3 and am currently doing a lot of 4 ;-)
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
we have a chance to come out code?
I believe that O2's position with the unlocking of SIM-free and pre-pay Streaks isn't actually legit.
Ofcom's guidelines are that O2 can only refuse to unlock the phone until they've recovered any subsidy offered on the phone - in the case of the SIM-free and and pre-pay versions that amounts to £0 and £30 respectively against the cost direct from Dell.
I would call O2 customer service and ask for the unlock code (they can ask for a reasonable fee for this). If they refuse tell them that you'll be reporting them to Ofcom and open a complaint with Ofcom (http://www.ofcom.org.uk/) if enough people do it I suspect they'll relent and do what they're legally obliged to do.
As far as the contract Streaks are concerned, they are within their rights to refuse to unlock for 12 months, but as they're getting their pound of flesh through contract payments whatever happens to the phone I can't see their justifcation for refusing...
Hope this helps...

O2 will not be unlocking Streaks for the forseeable future, that is fact whether you have filled in a form or spoke to a CSA who says thet they can do it....it will not happen

Hi
I have the dell streak, and am on vodafone UK ,i just received the rebelsim card 2 yesterday and put it in my streak, seems to be working fine with my vodafone sim,i am on a vodafone contract, all i did was put my vodafone sim card in an old nokia ,that does not have 3g,to get signal, and then put it in my streak with rebel sim and vodafone sim card ,seems to be working great, if you buy the rebel sim for the dell streak just now, they are giving you a free case for it,and a free screen protector, and if you enter the code "Rebel" during checkout you get an extra 5 percent off the total price,i paid £14.50 including postage in the uk the free case is quite cheap made, but for free,it will do until i find a better one i was a bit wary about getting the rebel sim at first, but now i am using it with vodafone uk and it works fine,so go for it

HI
Yes you get 3g but sometimes you can lose signal/service/just put it back to 2g in the streak, and it comes back no problem,i can receive texts and calls no problem give it a try, you have to keep data roaming on as well to get the 3g i think, something to do with the way the rebel sim unlocks the streak
Do you have to put the sim back into a 2G phone and then back in the streak. Or can you just set the Streak to 2G and then back to 3G?
Somehow vodafone 3g can work on Dell Streak with rebel sim. Im on 3 and no 3g with rebel sim. I dont want to stay with O2 so hence the sale of my Dell Streak, waiting for the unlocked one price go lower so I can afford one

THinking of getting the DHD on my network Orange when i'm due for an upgrade in October and i was wondering if it will actually be available? Does anyone know what the flagship network will be?
Please don't say o2 lol, i hate those buggers.
As far as I know, Vodafone is going to be the "flagship". HTC seemed to be bigging them up a lot at the launch event.
Orange and T-Mobile are getting the phone too, but they didn't get a mention.
O2 so far aren't even getting the phone at all!
3rd party online stores are offering the HD on T-Mobile, Orange, O2 and Vodafone...always best to get from a 3rd party as to not get a crap branded handset!!

Yep, that's what I did with my TP2 and is what I'm doing with my HD
I have it ordered from a 3rd party on Vodafone. I wonder because it will be the first shipment will it have all the Vodafone crap on it or touch wood it will be sim free ??
Depends where you get it from and whether you're first shipment or not.
When I ordered my TP2 from mobilephonesdirect I was first shipment and Voda didn't even have theirs yet - so I got an unbranded one.
I don't know if somewhere down the line Voda got their stock and MPD started selling from Voda stock rather than sim-free stock...
I expect at this stage all stock that doesn't come direct from an operator will be unbranded and sim-free.
I ordered it from here immediately once they started taking orders so i should be in the first shipment - http://www.mobiles.co.uk/htc-desire-hd.html
Here's hoping its sim free then m8
I've just sent Orange an email asking about a release date. I'll post back when I hear something.
I never use a 3rd Party. Insurance is 6.00 a month on Orange. They replace the phone the next day usually no questions asked.
If you buy 3rd party you cannot insure your phone direct. You end up paying about 10.00 a month then if you want to claim they try everything to get out of helping you.
In my experience always buy direct. I know the branding is a pain. Custom Roms get rid of the bloatware. A small badge you can put up with.
If you buy a 3rd party phone the main operator will always tell you to contact who you bought your phone from if there's a fault.
That's where you will start having problems.
Sent from my HTC Hero
I phoned Vodafone about my TP2 when I got it asking if I can have insurance put on through Vodafone rather than via the reseller and they said "Yep no problem" and put it on for me! Not had to use it, but just saying...
That's good maybe it's just Orange. I got a phone from Phones 4 you years ago and Orange wouldn't touch me on insurance. I just like to deal direct because I get really good loyalty discounts.
Sent from my HTC Hero
I know what you mean. When I upgraded from my K800i to my TyTNII Orange were really really great at giving me a good deal.
I actually used to work for Orange about 4 years ago, and I still have a warm place in my heart.
I'm defecting to T-Mobile this time so I can take advantage of Everything Everywhere, makes me feel like I'm getting closer to Orange again.
Orange Care was by and large one of the best aspects of their service. I used it on my old SPV M2000 which I crushed on the day I got it by tripping over a rope fence. Problem I had was that they had none to replace it with so I got stuck with an SEP910i - which was no replacement for the M2000. There was a big scandal about it and the media got involved and in the end I got a brand new M2000.
I would have stuck with Orange for my TP2, but it was going to take a couple of months for it to be available on Orange whereas I could get it on Vodafone instantly, and I was so fed up with my TyTN II that I begrudgingly jumped ship. Not that Vodafone have caused me any problems. Orange just had a bit more of a personal touch. Vodafone is very corporate and don't seem as 'fun' as Orange are.
My work Treo Pro is on Vodafone anyway, so it's no loss
Wow, I ended up talking a lot there.
Orange are not ideal as they tend to mess with the handset too much for my liking. I did mention this in another thread but orange don't seem to have any information on DHD, one of the sell reps even suggested they might not even get it at all!!
mobilphonesdirect.com are quite good they have confirmed handset will be sim free and are offering the cheapest deals. Ordered mine today expected to get it on he 7th October, wait and see.
I'm pretty sure orange will get it since they're merged with T-Mobile. I read that they'll be rebranding around 2012 too. I can't imagine orange not getting it, it would be a mistake on their part in my opinion.

[Q] Are the S4's going to be easily unlockable?

Hi all,
Long time joiner on here but left shortly after joining when I joined the "i" bandwagon. I have since got an S3 and now about to order an S4 having come back to the Android world!
So to begin with ....
I know it's difficult to say with a unit not even out yet but based on how the previous samsung's have been, will the S4 be easily unlockable?
My issue is that I am on a good contract with O2 but they're not willing to issue me an S4 without getting onto a 24 month contract even if I pay a fair bit upfront.
So my other option is that I buy a Orange/EE unit on a 12 or 18 month contract, get it unlocked and then stick the O2 sim in there.
And then with the S3, that can take the sim that comes with the new contract as I need to port an old pay as you go secondary number over anyway.
I won't place the order however if we're talking months before unlocking it as it will be pointless getting it without being able to use it
Thanks!

The other option is to buy a phone from phones4u, Im sure all the phones from these companys are sim free and you also receive a pre order pack including a case, sd card and a car charger.
you can also get 12 month contracts on vodafone.
And if you go through quidco or topcashback you can receive cashback for these too.
Let me drop them an email
I did ask dialAphone - theirs is locked but did not think about P4U

thats strange about dialaphone, I thought all their phones were unlocked too. I ordered my htc one X from them and it was unlocked.
Just had a live chat with P4U, have to say, very impressive. No waiting, she was extremely quick to reply each time and clearly UK based
So basically if it is ordered online, it might be unlocked but there is no guarantee it will be for certain.
BUT, if bought in-store, I can request an unlocked unit.
I think this will probably be the way to go

Just had a live chat with P4U, have to say, very impressive. No waiting, she was extremely quick to reply each time and clearly UK based
So basically if it is ordered online, it might be unlocked but there is no guarantee it will be for certain.
BUT, if bought in-store, I can request an unlocked unit.
I think this will probably be the way to go

Yep had nothing but positive experiences with both dialaphone and phones4u
Its on unlocked mobile for £529 I'm very tempted, but was in o2 shop today and the guys there reckon it will be under £500 within a couple of weeks to buy locked to o2 so might be worth waiting for a few weeks
With Three it's £15 to unlock and you can do it right away.
Thanks all for the replies
I'm going to take the punt and go for an Orange S4. I get 7 days to return it so if it's locked on Saturday or whenever it arrives, I'll just have to send it back or maybe speak to Orange first to see if they can unlock it with the threat of cancelling the contract if it's not.
And if that happens, it'll just be a case of waiting or maybe going with O2 and the deal they have offered to upgrade which is not a nice one!
