[Q] noob trying to dl gingerbreak - Xperia Play General

I am new to this, and I am trying to install gingerbreak. On my
Xperia play. When I download it goes onto the
Sd card and I believe that is why I am getting a message that it cannot install
And so I am following the instructions of chainfires. However I need help getting it onto
The actual device?
Please and thank you.

There should be no issuses installing apps from your sd card... i do it all the time
Sent from my R800i using Tapatalk

Use a file browser such as Astro (free on the market) to locate the file, click on it & open it with app installer.

yep gingerbreak has to be installed onto the phone, not the SD card, Go to settings>apps>manage>gingerbreak>move to phone.

Sounds to me like all you need to do is to go to settings . Applications . And allow unknown sources. Then install using a file browser.

Thanks for the fast reply's everyone. However when i go to find gingerbreak when i go to settings > apps > manage > Gingerbreak, it doesn't appear there. I also cannot use allow unknown sources as i don't have that option.
Any suggestions?

Wrong menu. Like I said, go menu->settings->applications. First chronic is "allow unknown sources".
After checking this. You can install from decade, using any file explorer.

That sounds odd, it should be in the settings were you manage your apps, as nieldk says, the first option. Wich language is your phone set to cause the application settings menu is not called the same in different languages.

I'm considering rooting as well, so I can remove the bloat apps. I intend on keeping up to date on the OTA updates, however. Does anyone know if it's possible to un-root after removing the bloat apps? Or, if it's safe to do the next OTA update after rooting? I don't mind losing the root, I just want to get rid of the bloat apps.

to unroot just delete superuser.apk from /system/app/ and remove su from /system/bin/ or /system/xbin/ (it changed by device)

Thanks Then it's safe to (after unroot) use OTA updates? Sorry, n00b here, before the Xperia Play I was using a Motorola dumb phone with custom ROMs.

Thanks Dousan,
I was just checking another forum,
And it said something about AT&T locks out Xperia phones. With some Xperia X10s having no Unknown sources option. But i cant seem to find anything about Xperia Plays with the same issue.
Do you know if that would apply to my phone?
Is there something to work around that?
Im not at home right now, i'm just glancing with someone elses computer, but i will look into it more when i get home.

Chinese HTC Wildfire

Hi, I believe I have a Wildfire not "S." Since it's running on 2.2.
I would like access to the US Android Market. Have no idea what I'm supposed to do. Please kindly point me to the right direction. Thank you!
use market enabler app
Thanks, but can you provide specific instructions? I am a complete newbie. I see market enabler in the android market when I search via pc. But how would I access it with the wildfire when their is no Market app or icon? It has some sort of chinese market.
The Wildfire is a different phone to the Wildfire S. In this forum we have Wildfires, not the Wildfire S. The Wildfire S is in a different forum. If its running 2.2.1 it's probably a Wildfire.

To enable the US/UK Market? Well, you just need to search the market for market enabler. If you can't find it. You'll have to find an APK for it. (Make sure that you can install apps other than ones from the market!)

1. Does the phone need to be rooted first? I see some of these enabler apps that says "root permission." If yes, how do I root it?
2. The browser on the wildfire for me sucks and slow as heck. So I would need to find the apk on my pc and put it in the microsd. However, in the past, every-time I do this, I cannot find the file from my phone. Can you tell me where exactly should I put the file on the microsd, and then where to go on my phone to look for it?
Thank you.

1. Root is essential. In the wildfire development section are lots of good tutorials that guide you step by step trough it.
2. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like you do not have a file explorer? Just as in Windows and in the GUI of linux, you need a program to explore your system (windows explorer and nautilus, respectively). It was a bit strange for me as well, but such an app doesn't come standard with your phone. So you ave to go to the market (you can do it with command on your pc as well, but going from your experiance it will take some time to get to know that). Here is the market link for ES Explorer, which I personally like most: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.estrongs.android.pop
From there you can browse to your sdcard and when you select an apk that you have put there with the use of your pc, it will ask you to install it.
Good luck

Lbe has security hole when booting up. Plus doesnt work always. Had instances where something blocked got throught. Pdroid is better but you need to build deodexed rom and build own patch.
What did you install that triggered that permission request?

from the official topic with the LPY room
From the pics I can see that these are all Samsung and Google apps ,most of them should have access without even asking you ,so I guess it's either a bug or maybe a virus?
Anyway I think you can safely give these apps permission seeing they are all system apps.

as I said ,all of them are system apps ,it's just weird that they should ask for permission .
usually if a system appis asking for permission then it has been modified in some way, like modified google maps .
are you sure it is fully stock? if yes then it could be just a bug maybe?
you could probably solve this by wiping ,but since you are on LPY this has the potential of being lethal to your phone.
my advice is allow them access ,I doubt any harm will come of it.
Yeah those seem to be system app but why on earth LCD test and other apps would want to access your google account?
I suggest flash safe kernel wipe data then re-flash ICS.
Or downgrade to GB wipe data then upgrade to ICS.

Does you S4 show "custom" status and the unlock icon? Or does it show "official"?
Could always decompile and remove the check from the code, but that is kinda hardcore, would need to find a smali badass to do it.

Just a thought, but if you can get the phone back to saying "official" without the padlock maybe it will work. There are a bunch of threads about regaining official status floating around the forums. Some methods work for some and other methods work for others. It might be worth trying though.
Most importantly: did you grant this application root rights? I once had an authenticator for an online game that asked for root rights. If granted, it complained about the risks of using the authenticator on a rooted system. It was interesting.
Now, otherwise I can't see how DirecTV is checking your device to see if it's been compromised, or "security-tampered" ... Unless it has rights to check that "device status - custom" that the others here are referring to?
If that's the case, it should be easy enough to get rid of the "custom" status by using SuperSU instead of SuperUser. It involves downloading/installing SuperSU, updating it and the SU binary, and then uninstalling SuperUser (the app that comes with Motochopper). A reboot or two is usually necessary.
If you've uninstalled bloatware or installed a custom kernel or rom, you're pretty much stuck with "custom" until we find another way around this.
Same issue here
Won't run on SG3 with Stock Rooted counter= 0 nor will it run on Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 on Cyanogenmod 10.1. Same error message. I assumed Cyanogen would trip but Stock Rooted? DIRECTV will have to address this.
Most of these apps won't run on a rooted device as they are security risks as far as they are concered

As mentioned, it is most likely either directly checking for known superuser apks or binaries or it is checking the "status" to determine if root has been achieved. If it is only checking for "status", then maintaining an "official" status should be enough to get it to run. If it actually checks for root, then the APK will need modifying to remove the check or return a reverse false positive or root will need to be removed.

[Q] Any way to prevent apps from being uninstalled?

My kid sometimes incidentally uninstalls some apps from my SM-T311. I have tried several locking apps like SmartLock, Perfect App Lock etc... with app uninstall locking but these locking apps do not work well. I think maybe due to Kitkat as these work like champ on my old 4.2.2 phone.
Is there any way to lock uninstall apps then?
App lock works, register to an email address to unlock the ability to prevent Uninstallation of app lock. I use it on my teenagers smart phone. Best locking app I have found
I337 stock NC1, rooted, unlocked

I'm using CMsecurity for my kid tab. there's a good feature AppsLock. this app with pattern security can blocking KK setting to uninstall apps and can block important apps like e-mail, SuperSU, AFwall, and root apps to open.
Child proof app i think

You can install the app to system that way they cant uninstall it from app drawer
if their smart enough the put a pin on superSU and deactivate it so they don't uninstall it from ESfile explore
Take a look at "/system/app mover" - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.j4velin.systemappmover, it can convert normal apps to system apps which should block uninstall

I have this on all my Samsung devices (don't have my tab 4 8" yet but will install on there as well) and works perfect.

Can you copy the download out of the phone without root?
Are you able to download the update with root?

Oh ya, I always pull the updates before flashing, but usually my phones are rooted minutes after I receive them.
I need my Gear to work and it didn't with the current root... bummer...
Which is the previous version? N930PVPU1APGC?

Does this affect/patch the root method we have for the Sprint Note 7?
Even if you update, you should be able to Odin back to the root file...as you can odin back to the original official tar. The update only adds wifi calling and some smaller fixes.
I have the update, have not installed it. I am not rooted, so don't know how to pull it off for others. But will be glad to if someone tells me how on my unrooted phone, if possible.

So it allowed you do download the update while you were rooted?
Out of curiosity, where on the phone was the download stored?
Oops, just read more carefully, you don't know where it is. I have pulled them before, but don't remember where. It's not the obvious places like "Download". I think it was in a cache folder. Use a root explorer and look around in the system folder.
Right , I don't know where it is

You could try ota or fota
I'm pretty sure it is downloaded to the system folder somewhere (cache maybe?). Without root, you'll never get to it.
I figured as much but it seemed like people were interested having non rooted people look.
It's odd cause this is the first non rooted phone I've ever had. I'm holding out to see if we get the boot loader unlocked and custom roms. If not I'm going to skip root this time around.

I'm in the same boat. I need my Gear S to work and it doesn't with the rooted rom we have now.
I'm surprisingly happy with it unrooted. I did buy Adguard, because I can't stand ads. Other than that, all good. If my plan didn't include HotSpot, it might be a different story.
