Kernels - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What is the big difference between all these. .26 .32 etc?
Sent from my NookColor using XDA Premium App

It depends on what U r looking.
Some are stable for everyday use, some are experimentals.
Different versions with added different feautures.

Former is kinda mashed together, but really stable and awesome and fast. The latter is what is being worked on right now, and will allow CM7 battery life to be similar to stock, allow better wifi connections, etc.

Which is the best stock rom for you? JPY/JS5/JS7/JS8/JPG/JPJ/JPK/JVK

I'm sure lots of you guys have come across these few roms and to be exactly, they are actually not much difference from each others as you can see in the release date..e.g JPK's build date just right after JPJ's..changes are minor, maybe some bug fixes.
Well the thing is..if any of you have tried any of these rom..would you provide any info regard these roms? how it perform? etc etc..battery life, smoothness in app drawer scrolling, gallery bug, or even the heat issue when connected to wifi, what is it so promising that convincing you flash from (JS5 to JS7 or 8 lets say?)I mean..just share..just share what you thought about these rom, when it is stock of course lol.
I see lots of people still asking about the gallery bug in almost every new rom's thread, why don we share it out here?like..the bug exits in which or which rom and doesnt exists in which or which rom.
and oh most importantly..it would be the BEST if you could provide info like..what are the changes from the previous rom to the latest rom.I know how difficult this is cos' samsung never really provide the changelog for each rom..at least some of your user experience please?
I would like to choose from the options you gave, but for me the best stock ROM so far is XWJVK (Gingerbread 2.3.3). Has best smoothness so far, no lag or black screens and I haven't encountered any issues yet. I can't really.say anything about the battery life yet as I haven't recalibrated my battery yet, but so far XWJVK is the best for me!

I must agree. Battery life is also unbelievable. None of earlier roms i tried haven't come this close to smoothness and battery life, well maybe JPE modem was close at battery life, but JVK got better reception and 3g speed.

Definitely JVK, best battery life and smoothness so far. Can't wait for the final release of gingerbread, it'll be awesome.
JVK what else?
perfect jvk
ah shouldn't include JVK the answers are too 1 sided lol
JVK without hesitation, this makes sgs fly
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
JPJ/JPK are my preference now because of the ability to use the speedmod kernel which adds the lower brightness and crisper display. Both a must for me. The only downside is the notification drawer isn't super smooth. Otherwise just as fast as JVK, IMHO.
Sent from a telephony device
its obvious tht the new versions will b changd 4 better perfrmance.. but when ever i flash to 2.1 update i mean it feels tht sgs is perfect for tht...yeah iam on froyo stock now and ive flashed every gud roms out there....but personally i think gone r the days of sgs soon...wiv s2,lg 3d ,,,all those high end cpu, gpu, ram etc its huge compe////// and how long can i push a limited hardware to work wiv the latest tech now/////i love my phones but jus cant stick wiv something thts getting outdated ///face the fact.... soon iam switching wen i get some serious cash lol.....peace.....cheerz

Jvk.
Hands down for me.
I used to flash friends phones with my own custom roms, darkys, and good stock versions and someone would always complain about something....
Flashed 6 phones now with rooted stock jvk. Modified framework Res for screen off animation only. Russian method for lights turning off and not one complaint. Yay. Friends just showing off to iph4 users.

Looking to switch back to Sense

I have been using CyanogenMod for a while now, but I want to give Sense another try. I have a couple quick questions.
- Are there any Sense ROMs that are a fairly decent balance of fast and stable? I can deal with the occasional force close if the ROM is significantly faster than another, but I'd say stability is more of a priority to me.
- I don't particularly like the Sense People and Calendar apps (I've found they're a bit slower than the AOSP apps). Can I just install the AOSP versions without major stability issues? If yes, would the Sense dialer still be able to pull from the AOSP Contacts app?
Thanks in advance.
Edit: I omitted one thing. I'd say that stability is the most important aspect, followed by battery life. I know battery life is mostly determined by the kernel. Can anyone recommend a good Sense kernel as well?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
I would try WarmZ 2.2 or Incredibly Re-Engineered both of those are sense 2.0 and are stable and fast. I liked both. But it's up to you!
Kernel wise, the kernels they come with worked great for me.
SkyRaider 3.5 w/Lou's #8 - slick....
4.0 is due out very soon.
Nils business z with ziggys latest bfs wo havs kernel is very stable with xcellent battery
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Z ROMs are nice, and quick, but there's been a spattering of reports on phantom calls and reboots. Hence, I would not say they are fully stable and dependable. There are also some quirks when using some apps (e.g. swype keyboard).
In my experience, you need to stick with 100% incredible framework if you value stability and reliability. I am a huge fan of both IncROM and Magnolia. They are both very fast in my book, and everything works out of the box, so to speak. When SR 4 hits in a few days it may be great as well.
To your question about contacts...
No, you cannot simply install AOSP versions onto a Sense ROM. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
I've never had any issues with swype on z roms or had any random reboots or phantom calls (I'm not even sure exactly what that refers to). I've usually used the warm z nightlies. Guess it just depends on the phone/rom.

yeah, the issue I'm referring to is more of an annoyance. You know, how the Sense copy/paste functions cover up the Swype word choices when you double-click a word to correct it? It's the little things....Still, I am very torn between Z-ROMs and Inc ROMs because I do like many other things about the Z.

I use Swype. I also ask annoyed by that issue with the cut and paste option blocking the word choice/edit on MIUI. I assumed it was part of Gingerbread. Not so?
Edit- pls excuse my blunder. Of course Warm Z is not GB so that answers my question. Then again MIUI is AOSP and also has that.

My strong recommendation would be Magnolia. Options are superb.. battery is splendid... and the developer entertains personal requests.

Neutrino vs Darkside

I know its all personnel preference. But what rom is better. I'm looking for that happy medium for smooth performance with GREAT battery life. I am already running cm7 bat whatever its its alright. I have no need for webtop. HDMI mirrioring would be cool of it was landscape and was stable. And wireless hot spot and working gps is a must. Just wanting to flash something new and stick with it tired of dashing different things and having to set up my phone again any help will greatly be appreciated

I've noticed 15-18% better battery on Darkside than that on cm7 and I used to get great battery on that one so go figure
Plus, all works here pretty smoothly.
Here's a shot of what I'm talkin about

If your looking for speed go with Neutrino. Honestly its by far the fastest rom I have ever used. Battery is great, and the creator is very helpful with any problems you have.
Highly recommended!!
I have yet to be disappointed with darkside was playing around with miui for awhile. probably go to that once development is further along but back to darkside for now

Love it so far
right now on 4.4 lite version.
Although with all the cool stuff added on to the newer version it seems just a bit slower to me then back when i was on 2.xxx versions, but they are worth it.
still much better then anything stock though. (maybe it's just me, maybe it's not slower, or maybe it's just my phone, I don't know...)

Hi all,
i use both, jumping from Neutrino to DarkSide & vice-versa via Nand-BackUp (and trying also others).
Neutrino is so smooth, fast and battery +/- the same as DarkSide.
Anyway i've found the DarkSide surprisingly similar about performance. Then mind that if you like to use WebTop or LapDock ROMs based on CM7 as Neutrino haven't these features.
I like Neutrino but it is more like pre-beta stage to me. It takes too much tweaking to get it to act normal. Currently on darkside 2.8 using landscape hdmi support

I always keep coming back to DarkSide 4.2 Lite
It's been pretty stable, fast and has all the bells and whistles I need (specially Webtop and Fingerprint Scanner).
I'm hoping that some day I could stick with MIUI once it matures enough, I'm willing to let go my Webtop as long as I can use HDMI Landscape Mirror with my Lapdock.

The Darkside, the best based motoblur. Neutrino, the best ROM. Neutrino is smooth, CM7 based with MIUI camera.
Just flashed neutrino 1.4 some time back. I think the battery is draining rather fast. But i'll let it stick for another week before I go back to Darkside. Motoblur still has a lot of my contacts which won't show up when I install any of the cm7 based roms .
Between Darkside and cm7 I feel Darkside had rather significantly battery life. However, the customizability of cm7 may be worth the sacrifice. To each his own, pick your favorite.

Hi I have been running neutrino 1.4s ee for week prior to that cm 7.1. I think neutrino has been quicker generally but it is very stripped down so by the time you have added things back to it think it then seems to have slowed up a bit. Boot is very quick, but my GPS doesn't work. I think they're trying to fix in next update. Quite a few fc's too. Tempted to try darkside soon though.

Quickest But Stable Roms

I am currently running Andromadus Mimicry, but I have found it to be quite slow. Has anyone experienced any quick, but stable roms.
Thanks
Another one of these?
Whatever one you use that meets your expectations. There are people here that will run ICS without issues, but state they have issues with Jelly Bean or Gingerbread. It is all a matter of what works for you.
That being said, CM7 based ROMs are your best bet. They are the most developed and mature for the device.

If you find Andromadus Mimicry and CM7.2 too slow, than I’m afraid you need a new phone
Minicry might not be 100% stable, but it is pretty close. I think the ICS (or JB) would not be significantly faster even with official HTC kernel (without hacks).
You can overclock your phone and try different governors. This way you can improve the “smoothness” at a cost of battery life. Also be sure you are running ext4 filesystem. And a fast SD card may help too, check if it is at least class 8.
Mimicry flies for me at 1.5ghz
Andromadus test builds with JellyBean are the fastest of all I've tested so far (cm7.*, cm9.*, MIUI, stock sense ROMs etc.). There are some bugs however (in latest build - #71 - for example camera stopped working), but speed, smoothness, and all JB-related-features of this ROM are really outstanding. I believe, that all annoying bugs will be smashed really soon and my G2 will last until new nexus comes out.

Both of them tend to have some VERY slow slowdown periods, where I have to take out the battery, just to get It responsive.
When I try to overclock it, anything higher than about 1209 (with smartass governor) gives me a bootloop.

I'm coming from GB + CM7 rom, is the new JB or ICS much faster and still retain the phone's full functionality? I'm considering changing to Andromadus Minicry ICS/CM9. Currently, there is considerable lag when I just try to open up e-mail or respond to a text msg.
If there is much improvements, I rather just stay with my current build try not fix something that isn't (completely) broken. Is there a good way to migrate current apps over to the new rom? I'm currently running some crack apps that may not be available anymore.

Sense beyond 2.1/3.5(gingerbread) generally speaking is too much bloat for desirez/g2, sense 4.0A would be fine cept its been worsen and slowed down with the 3.0 kernel for sake of a working camera. The full sense 4.0 they took the kernel from is slow to the point of practically unusable on our devices.

Jelly bean still has a bit of work to put into, but there are plenty of fast ICS roms (non-sense) out there with "functional" camera app (post-gb its mainly the camera people complain about)
I've found for me, ICS to be quicker/smoother than stock or CM7.2.
Regarding apps (while I don't condone piracy) titanium backup would be the solution, assuming said apps are compatible with ICS.

PS: "CM9" by Jerl is not CM9 Official (ie: it didn't come from the cyanogenmod people), it's just bout the same (if not worse in my opinion) than Mimicry which is based off Andromadus which is based off Cyanogenmod 9's source. Though if you do try Jerl's port of it, I strongly advise you not to use the 3.0 kernel, too many problems with it and he apparently didn't bother testing it before releasing it (or least didn't bother to tell people the risk).
Far as google account syncing, it depends on whether or not you made sure to flash google apps afterwards, and if you accidently booted prior to flashing it, then you need to make sure to remove all your accounts on the phone then re-add them as it says in the OP of that thread.

MIUI doesn't have a built in feature to set CPU speeds. But most other CM based roms does have such option built in. Look for something like Performance->CPU in settings. There you can set a CPU governor too
