HD2 owners...S2 Touchwiz vs Sensation Sense - Galaxy S II General

Hi peeps...
As an HD2 owner at end of contract. One is in a quandry. I wanted S2 on Three AYCE... but now having second thoughts.
S2 excellent spec but looking at videos on youtube, touchwiz looks a little old, like old windows mobile 6, bit basic looking.
Sensation, lower specs but running sense. If it it works well I wont be bothered about rooting.
HD2 owners who have jumped on the Galaxy bandwagon, do you feel the integration of the calendar etc is less flash than Senses' integration etc?
Also, ideally i wanted to get a new phone before my honeymoon at end of the month. So not much time.
Early adopters of S2 are starting to complain about various things, and it's making me waiver. I've been running vanilla android on HD2 so have forgotten alot about Sense, but remembered it looked nice and well integrated.
Currently thinking of getting the htc on a cheap contract or buy, then buy a 3 AYCE sim to use with it. Decisions decisions!
Your thoughts...?

I had desire hd and i prefere touchwiz that sense, few bits id like to change on here but overall it isn't too bad, social hubs need to be removed "that's a must", i wouldn't say its like windows no way.
Havent tried sense 3.0 so couldn't compare.

I guess the only way to decide is to pop down to the local 3 store and have a play. Big decision, will have it for a long time.

You do know there such things as launchers that easily replace the stock touchwiz, blur etc.
Just install it and you are good to go.

My S2 didn't turn up today (should tomorrow), so I can't say on a day-to-day usage. But if you're in doubt then drop by a store somewhere if you can, and ask to have a play with a demo unit. You can't really test integration *properly* but it should give you an idea of what it's like.
As mentioned, you can try out other home launchers (ADW Launcher and Launcher Pro are two considered among the best) to see if you like any of them as an alternative to TouchWiz (or Sense).

Get whichever phone you actually want - as others have said, just replace the stock launchers if you dont like them - plenty of choice there.
Also - might not be a good idea to get the new phone just before your honeymoon, your mrs might not appreciate you having a second honeymoon period at the same time

There's more to it than the launchers in sense. Their own apps, and then the nice widgets they provide for you. A launcher just simply can't offer you the full experience.
Anyways on topic. Well personally I wouldn't even think of choosing the sensation due to the measely 1 gb rom. Now 512 on the HD2 was bad enough, but 1gb? And the fact that sense 3.0 is even bigger than other sense versions, so how much space do we actually have for apps? I know we have ways of "expanding storage", but a flagship shouldn't even require us to be doing such. And sense? Am I really going to let sense get in the way of me getting the best speced device out there? With the best screen? Or even best camera (who knows, I can say that sensation won't be packing a "wow" camera since it's HTC)?
Well that's all I can think of.

That is the smart thing to do...ultimatelly it will come down to your own preference. If you are used to Sense, you may not feel like changing...but then again, you might be curious to try something new/different...not necessarily better or worse.

Yeah recently changed from Mdeejays CM7 to BoyPPC and impressed with the LP sense bits. Might pre-order the sensation and in the meantime checkout the s2, if the Sensation does arrive around the 19th, I will have time to decide which I prefer, and presume I can return the Sensation. No PAYG tariff with VF though. Still want the 3 mobile AYCE.

I would say the intergration on Sense is better. Like you i've been running a Vanilla ROM on my HD2 and it seems to work a lot faster. I use Launcher Pro which is good.
Touch Wiz is o.k but i've not had a proper play with it. The specs alone for the SGS2 make me want to get the phone!! Hopefully I should have one tomorrow.
I tried a pre production model of the Sensation at the Gadget Show Live. Nice phone.

Threes AYCE is good, and there signal (for me at least) is the best in my area thusly their speeds are amazing (2mbps)....but 24m contract...gets thumbs down from me
I like to upgrade my phone every 6 months so in having an 18 month contract, 1 in every 3 times i get a free phone. If i was on a 24m it would be 1 in every 4 phones....if you get what im sayin

Doesn't the Sensation have 786 mb ram, and 4 gb rom, but only 1 gb of which is available to the user? 2 gb is reserved for apps and the other 1 gb is for sense, etc? I'll try and find out where i read this. I might have got it confused with the evo 3d, possibly.
Ian

I was in the same position deciding whether to go with the S2 or Sensation however I was due an upgrade now and would never jump from O2 to Vodafone due to the poor reception I get in my area, nothing comes close to O2. Anyway I ended up getting the S2 as there's no official release date for the sensation on O2 or any other carriers except for June which is ages away. I will definitely be having a look at the sensation and if I like it that much I'll sell the S2 and get one as I have Sense 2.1 on my HD2 and love it, makes Touchwiz look a little plain and boring.
In the meantime I'll be trying out other launchers as I've done with web browsers as the standard S2 browser is pretty poor always defaulting to mobile user agent every use even after selecting desktop. I'm using Dolphin HD and it's really good so far.
I'm definitely missing Sense at the moment just for all the widgets, SMS, friendstream and music the most and then there's the screen layout, home should always be the middle not far left lol. I'm still giving Touchwiz a chance as it's definitely not as bad as I first thought from seeing it in the reviews.
Personally other than Sense I actually liked the bulk and feel of the HD2 also which I'm sure the Sensation will be similar to as the S2 is a little light and there's not alot to it.
You wouldn't be dissappointed with the S2 that's for sure it's a beast of a phone and I'm getting used to the "quirks" I'm not a fan of so I'm sure you could adapt likewise and with the right development support I'm sure there'll be customisations left, right and centre to make it that little bit better

Yeah specs put me off too. But, if the screen allows to read web pages, like the iphone4, then that is a good bonus. Same with reading pdf's, the standard res of HD2 and possibly sg2, means small writing is blurred, again, will be interesting to test the sg2 in the shop.
re: memory, I believe its 4gb: 3gb for whatever and 1gb for user storage.
Recording 1080p, surely you need alot of storage memory, like sg2. htc=fail.

From what I see on GSMarena, it's 1 gb. For the evo 3d it's 4gb storage with 1gb ram.

i've been using htc desire for a year and though i like sense, i haven't really missed it since getting sgs2. sure touch wiz is not as good and the dock looks too much like iphone to my liking but there are so many decent launchers out there in the market which are as good as sense. its the hardware of sgs2 which makes this phone standout and even my iphone friends are well impressed by the screen and the smoothness of the phone.

Still not got hands on gs2 but now waivering to Sensation due to display resolution. Vodafone retentions reckon they will have it 16 to 19th May and will be Sim Unlocked. Will checkout gs2 this weekend. Either way, getting one 12month AYCE on 3mobile sim only.

I just googled "HTC sensation internal memory" and half the results say 1 gb and the other half says 4 gb
I prefer sense over touchwiz any day myself, but i've got to admit, i'm leaning to the SGS 2 purely on hardware alone. Which some might say is a bit naive, i guess.
Ian

The new Sense 3.0 looked really good from what I saw, but ultimately I decided to go for the S II as it looked a much nicer phone and specs wise it seemed better, discounting screen resolution. I mainly used LauncherPro previously and as TouchWiz wasn't really very good I switched over.

This is so dumb why is htc puting sense on every phone?

Why not just give it to hero and leave it at that? Now verizon got there gruubby little hands on sense but why have two androids released at the same time.Sprint has the hero but the the distinctive looking version the chinless one.The tmo Us got 3 android phones but they arent as good as the competition though. Now the hero is no longer uniquie since all these look alike are getting the touch up.
You do know that there are over 20 android phones slated to come out in the next 6-8 months, right? The hero isnt unique anyway. We've had hero roms running on the G1 since before the hero even had a US release.
yep its now just part of a series of clones..
Yeah I'm not really a fan of Sense UI, it has a couple of cool widgets but it's such a resource hog. Even if I had a Hero with the extra RAM I'd still use the regular launcher, but that's just me.

well sense ui is very visually appealing and adds function compared to phones running regular android. why keep sense ui only on hero...its htcs own custom ui so they should be able to do what they want.
plus the hero will just end up being a dud...a prototype for sense ui and see where they can improve upon..just like the g1...and the extra ram really does help with speed and multitasking.
and besides companies custom UIs is only included on phone without the 'with google" branding..(sprint hero is an exception)
Lol, that reminds me of this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TS7qVjr1Vps
OMG, why did HTC port sense to other Phones!, YOU WILL PAY HTC, whaaa, whaaa, I wanted exclusive!!!!
Dude, seriously...
Why do you care ?
Frankly I want to see Android do well. Why do I care if other Android phones get anothers UI ? All I care about is handset makers putting top grade hardware for these things.
In a forum much dedicated to importing UIs and Apps from other phones pretty damn ignorant to get upset about this.
i use sense on my g1 just wanted ur opinions since there are so many clones released now

they arent clones...tattoo has 1.6
even so, they arent clones..thats like saying two different dell laptops are clones because they both run windows 7
Sense is pretty much HTC's version or "Branch" of android much like Ubuntu is to
Debian (although not as different).
All HTC Phones with sense offer something different.
The Hero is an "All Rounder" (At the moment)
The Tattoo is a low cost budget phone with customisation aimed at the "less geeky" market.
The next "Major Release" they release with Sense UI will probably have the next version of Sense running on a 2.0 backbone and with a larger screen similar to the HD2.
did you guys forget, the UI is freaking great! Why wouldn't they put it on every phone if so many G1 owners are struggling for a decent version. I want that cliq tho...

Eh, I'm not really a fan. I found that I was just using the widgets for the hell of it. Don't need mail or SMS, music widget always lags, twitter one would never refresh ect. The only widgets I really like are global search, power control, music and flip clock. All of which you can get on 1.6+. I also love Advanced Launcher, which has faunctionality that TouchFlo doesn't. Not to mention it's a friggin' resource hog. So yeah, I'd rather have more RAM available to keep my phone running faster, even if it did have he extra RAM the Hero and 32 A Magic have.

I totally agree, I honestly don't know why people want sense so much, its just not very good in my opinion. You get very few usable upgrades in a trade off with it being much slower, I really don't see the point?
I'm due an upgrade soon and think I might get a hero, but if I do i'll probably root it and put a 2.0 stock based rom on it rather than sense!

To be honest, I only wanted sense for the widgets and the music app. That was about it, other than that, I could care less about the UI. At the growth rate of android I'm sure custom UIs will be a thing of the past sooner or later.

My HD2 makes me feel dirty

Hello friends. I have had my hd2 for about a month and a half now and I have not gotten close to it. My last phone purchase before the hd2 was the g1. I fell for that phone in about an hour. I felt it was at that tome the best phone I had ever had and it was nice and snappy. I had it for 2 years and had no issues ever. Then the touch screen got numbed and it decided to work on and off. I was going to run out and get a new one but I decided that I should just get a newer model. I knew it was going to be htc but the hd2 rePly stuck out foe me. Huge screen Wich felt good in my bear claw hands. And it is so sexy. Hardware is top of the line. I thought I was golden foe at least another 2 years. Yea right. I can't stand this phone. The touch input is not responsive enough to let me type at the speed I feel comfortabl at. And the web browser is not even in the same leauge as the one on the g1. I feel that I got a phone that wasn't me. I feel so bad and it hurts bad. The problem is that I bought it cash on a whim when it was sold out all over for $600.I know a bit high but what can I do. I felt it was fair I figure two years of use is less than a dollar a day for top notch hardware was ok. But this phone is not working for me. I feel bad when I say. Windows mobile killed the hd2. Htc should release some android for this. It seems that windows mobile isn't really the best for me. It may be great but I just fell for android. Now I have this horrid phone and I don't even like it. I actually just got an iPhone 2g and I like it more. And I hate the iPhone but what can I say. I found someone who will take my hd2 and give me a 16gb 3gs and a samsung behold 2. Seems pretty good. I can sll the build for a couple dollars maybe 150 ish and then sll the 3gs for around 400 maybe and then get me a nexus one or maybe I will just hold on to th cash and wait for htc to release another great android phone for tmobile. And no the mytouch slide is not htc top for tmobile I hope. Maybe I should wait till end of summer for some special and then use my renew credit. Tmobile is my only choice. Common tmoble be tops in android again please. The only affordable provider that has 3 lines unlmt talk for $99. I can't leave them

Sounds like Verizon is a better choice for you phone wise, and t-mobile is your choice for coverage and pricing.
Although T-mobile has some andriod phones the other carriers have the top android/droid phones other than the nexus one. Now you have to find out what one is bigger to you and then figure a solution for the other. HTC will never give this phone anroid but it might be ported by a developer. But doesn't look like any time soon.
Its called the galaxy S. I really think its coming to tmobile just wait for it.

x2. if you're gonna stick with t-mobile and want to stick with a device that has premium hardware like the hd2, wait for the galaxy s to come out. 4" screen, front camera, rear camera. Super AMOLED display.
i also upgraded from a both a g1 and a mytouch to an hd2. however, i'm not on the same boat as the OP of this thread. i have grown to like win mo 6.5 more and more and have made all the necessary tweaks to make the hd2 the way i want it to run and look in terms of theme and performance.
perhaps you should try flashing a rom or find the necessary .cab files such as cookie's home tab to help you change your mind about ditching this phone.

Exactly. I had mixed feelings about this phone when I first got it, and felt the same way you did. I paid full price for it (because of my hatred for contracts) and felt like I had made a huge mistake and instantly wanted to buy a Nexus One so I could shelf this device. But as I got more involved with the development community and tried different ROMs and 3rd party apps, I began to love it, not only is the performance better, but it is much sexier than it was. I still plan on buying a Nexus One (fandroid ) but by no means am I going to excommunicate myself from this device.
WinMo 6.5 was like an ugly girl with a great personality. You want nothing to do with her until you get to know her
But seriously, do not give up on this phone before testing everything out with it
Thanks for the responses.
I think that i have found the main issue with my phone. I have spbshell on it and i feel restricted. I think im going to just try and make my own rom. with what suites me. I also realized that i have a phone fetish or something. In my collection i have a G1, MyTouch 3g 1.2, iPhone 2g, HTC Hero, HTC HD2, Samsung Behold 2. I have to many phones. most recent was the iPhone 2g and it is not as bad as i thought. i was thinking of getting a iPhone 4 but i cant. I need to find a way to make this hd2 work for me. I hate the battery life also. o well,i guess i could just make a small 2000mah battery pack. that would fix things.
again thanks
Seriously dude, check out some different ROMs, and try Cookie's Home Tab. CHT actually mods the stock Sense interface, which is likely to work much better/smoother, and with less restrictions. Most of the ROMs available get rid of all the bloatware, and add speed/stability to the device.
I was in the same situation as you... and was seriously considering returning my HD2 and picking up the N1 instead. However, after installing several tweak apps and flashing Dinik & Miri's new ROM, I'm VERY satisfied. Works smooth, looks great, and has a lot of the features that I wanted from Android.
It really pays to do your homework, and spend some time modding your device... it takes time and trial/error to figure out what works best for you, but I'm sure you can get your HD2 running as you hoped it would. Just spend some time scouring these forums, and you'll find lots of good info on how to get the most out of your device. It can be a bit overwhelming, as a lot of the info is scattered throughout different subforums, but I'm confident you can find what you're looking for.
Also, it would help to know what mods/tweaks you've done to your HD2 so far, so we make recommendations on what you can do to make you happy with it (I.E.- ROM version, .cabs installed, etc.)
I took the plunge and traded it, I got a great deal. 1 iPhone 3GS and a Nexus one with a cracked screen. Now i have repaired the nexus one. I am happy with my trade. The HD2 had power but i didn't like it, not very fun to use. The 3gs is great and the nexus one is also great. true smaller screen but the ui is much better on both the iphone and nexus one. I wish tmobile would have something lined up for next year that is better than the incredible. If not i see no reason to stay with them. my contracts up in 3 months and they don't really have anything they could offer me to stay. plus the prepaid unlimited all on tmo network for $60 looks nice.
Glad to hear it worked out for you. I honestly love the HD2 and sleep with it nightly. But everyones different and uses different features. How you liking being a Machead?

Sprint carries the HTC EVO 4G, which is the same as an HTC HD2 except running Android, with an 8mp camera that can shoot video in 720p.
I must admit I wish I had signed for that instead, but I'm stuck for 2 years.
Evo's a great phone I just feel it came out at the wrong time. I think by Christmas it will be old news and we may see dual core's. Had it come out at the same time as the HD2 I would be liking it better.

Going to back to EVO, tried the Nexus-S 4G

Well after almost a week with the new Sprint Nexus-S 4G, I plan to return it and get my EVO going again. My EVO was rooted with the best Sense based ROM, "Myn's RS 5" I still think the EVO 4G is one of the better smartphones on the market ( if rooted, and good ROM installed ) even a year after it's release, and the EVO-3D should be even better yet.
I wanted the Nexus for the lightweight form factor, and easy fit in pocket...beautiful screen...and better battery life.
Well a week later I can NOT stand "vanilla" Android, didn't realize how much I took "Sense UI" for granted, basic Android feels so, uh basic, and years outdated. I mean come on the default Voice mail is to call a phone # to access messages, lol that's from the 90's man. The dialer and contacts also seem super basic and like iPhone1 or Android 1.5, and the default e-mail for non gmail is horrible, the standard e-mail widget on the EVO is perfect, and ten million times better.
So many things on "vanilla" Android just seems to be done so poorly and outdated, makes me wonder what people like about ? I know it is meant to be tweaked and played with, and add all your own custom apps and widgets, but that is stupid to me, that is just saying stock Android sucks.
Plus the battery life on my Nexus-S is not stellar like expected, sure it is better than my EVO, but barely, and the screen is actually harder to see outside in the sunlight.
Will go back to my EVO 4G, and upgrade to the EVO-2 ( 3d ), can only imagine a Myn's based ROM on that beast, with Android 2.3...dual cores...1gb memory...4gb storage...higher res screen...
Only thing I don't like on the EVO is it's thick and bulky size, it is borderline just too heavy, and big, not the 4.3" screen, I mean look at the new Galaxy S-2, that is 4.3 but super thin and lightweight, wish HTC could slim it down a bit.
Opinions ?
To each their own, I guess. I haven't tried the Nexus and don't plan to get one. I'm holding out hope we'll get we'll get the Galaxy S 2. I prefer AOSP over Sense. Sense feels gaudy to me and forces an aesthetic I don't care for. I like a lean, minimalistic approach that I can customize and make my own.
Either way. Welcome back.
You know you can put different ROMs on the Nexus S right?
I won't go with the Nexus S because it doesn't have a notification led [RETARDED] and because it's a minor bump from the Evo [not worth the loss of an upgrade] but it seems like most of your issue is the ROM itself.
Unfortunately, I read on the EVO 3D forum that if Myn can't get his hands on an EVO 3D for the upgrade price, he probably won't be devving for it. He technically doesn't qualify for an upgrade yet I believe.

That's what Myn's ROM "Warmtwopointtwo" is for, it is still "Sense" based, but gets rid of all the crapware and bloatware, and streamlines everything in the background, just keeping the core "Sense" stuff. It is a very clean and stripped down look, and then can still be themed and customized to your hearts content.

Unfortunately, I read on the EVO 3D forum that if Myn can't get his hands on an EVO 3D for the upgrade price, he probably won't be devving for it. He technically doesn't qualify for an upgrade yet I believe.

hmm...I am surprised on this forum, there isn't a Sprint rep that can cut Myn a deal, get him one for the upgrade price and not pay full retail ? I thought after one year you can upgrade to a new phone by renewing on a new 2yr contract and get the phone for the $199 price ? And usually most people have a $150 gift certificate by staying with Sprint after like 10 months, I know I got one.

So whats the best AOSP ROM ? CM 7 ?
Wish Cyanogen 7 was ready for the Nexus-S 4G, but they say have to wait for CM 7.1 that has official support for 2.3.4 that is on the Sprint Nexus-S.
I also got the nexus s two days ago and to be honest I love it. It a lot slimmer and lighter than the evo and it actually does not feel like its bulky in the pocket. The screen it very nice, but at times it seems a little oversaturated. Even thou it's got a 5mp camera it takes great pics and the video recording it's pretty good as well, granted it's not recording at 720p. Overall I am really enjoying a smaller phone ( didn't realize the evo was so massive compared to other phones) and hope that sprint gets a dual core 4 inch phone. I was saving my upgrade for the evo 3d but after having the nexus s I might just keep this and skip the evo 3d. Hopefully there will be a nexus 3 by the end of the year?? who knows.
in caparison to the evo;
...stock vanilla is just fine for me, straight to the point. Battery has lasting longer than the evo, nexus s does not have notification led but there is an app called "noled" which has been working just fine, love the phone design.
To be honest the evo is capable of doing everything i ever needed from a phone, and so does the nexus s ( but better for gaming) but with new and bigger tech coming out every 6months you always feel like you "need" the latest. So far the thing I'm really enjoying about the nexus is the size, it feels like the perfect size.

I've been using Deck's AOSP rom. There's a link to it in the Android Development forums. I use 1.0 because GB 2.3.4 roms have a MMS issue. I use Savages Zen BFS 2.1.0. You may like it.
CM7 has been unusually shaky, consider their track record. I have hope 7.1 will being more stable than the past releases.

I agree. CM is the only thing that makes AOSP any good. Without it, it does kinda suck. Unfortunately, CM hasn't been very good for me since CM6, forcing me to go back to Sense.

Try putting a Sense based ROM or UI on my Nexus-S, there is only one that I know of, and it is in beta, with a lot of features still not working. Don't know of any other "Sense UI" for the Nexus-S ?
Nice thing with Sense based phones, is they get the Sense ROM's of course, but also can easily install the AOSP ROM's too.
Watch this good hands on video of the new EVO 3D, mainly showing off Sense 3.0, which I what I wanted to see more of, I could give two ****s about the 3D on the phone. Actually I wish Sprint sold two versions, the "Sensation" non 3D version is slightly thinner, but exact same hardware.
But Sense 3.0 looks very ncie

Eh, it's only boring if you have no imagination and/or no ability to make things how you want them.
Vanilla android does one thing nicely, that's let you do anything you want. ADW and themes is a great example of that. I'm on AOSP right now and here's my homescreen, you may not like it, but if you don't think you could have made it how you wanted then you just didn't want to try. This is why we like Android over iOS, because we have freedom of expression, not conformity to look like everyone else's.

[Q] HD2 or Sensation?????

Comrades,
I am coming to the end of my contract just in time for the Sensation..
I love my HD2 (android) but a few wee things annoy me like low call voice (switched on and off speaker, only works for that call) and battery drain.
Is the DFT or other Android ROMs as fast and stable as the stock HTC rom?
I know the phone will be faster but it won’t be long until the XDA chaps crack the new ROM and I can put it on to the HD2.
Sensation obviously, but i would wait for the gsmversion of the evo3d(if that one still comes)
I was excited about the sensation coming to t mobile as well..........
Until I saw the specs of the SGS2 and sensation side by side.
I hate sense (on android) and touchwiz but when you look at the specs against one another its ridiculous...
HTC really dropped the ball with the sensation and to be honest you'd be better off getting the Sensation from T-mobile selling it, buying an HD2 and have some money left over
Either that or an SGS2 (27th may on Tmo)
Edit;
lol if I'd actually paid attention when reading your post I'd have seen that you already have an HD2...
If its the newer version of sense you want then you'd be better with the sensation as its going to have the extra RAM to deal with the memory hogging abomination that is HTC Sense.....
(I hate sense, in case you hadnt noticed)

As a Photographer
I would not get too bothered with camera MP density. The Iphones camera is **** hot @ 5MP.
The EVO 3D sound good, more RAM and a friggin 3D screen………..but the back of it is ugly.
If you wait for the next phone to arrive you would never have a phone. LOL.
Personally I'm going to keep my HD2 going until I find out about the SGSII coming to T-Mobile. I'm also due an upgrade and I just don't know if I want to use it on the Sensation with the SGSII out there. Luckily my HD2 does everything I need so no rush here. Will probably wait to see them both in person in a couple months. SGSII should be ROM'd by then and we will know more about Sensation and if can be ROM'd.

Well generally, custom roms are faster than stock roms. E.g. Our custom rom of the desire hd is faster than a desire hd running its stock rom. However seeing as the sensation is per say 2x the performance of the HD2, the sensation running on its stock rom will more likely be better than the HD2 running a custom rom based on the sensation.
dont know if the qHD 960x540 will be support in near future?
GS2 hardware is good with 1 gb ram, but dont how good is the GPU?
Yes the nexushd2-gingerbread v2.7 is fast, stable and next to boyppc-shiftpda gingersense.s v20 it is the best rom in my opinion
i know what you are going through... i love my HD2 but that Pyramid looks amazing in its own. What im doing is just keeping my HD2 and will put the ROM on it when a cook like Imilka figures out a nice port of it or the MyTouch 4G Slide ROM. Im always looking for the latest ROM on my phone and with the HD2 i can do that now. If i got the Pyramid I know i would be anxious for hacks to come for it. Once my HD2 craps out that would be my first choice because HTC makes a great phone, Im leary of Samsung because of all the update problems that happens with it so far on Tmo... Im actually trying out a EVO 3D ROM < Kingdom > now and its been running pretty smooth. Well hopefully this gives you some insight on your choice...
Lawl this update thing has become much too dramatic. xD
It's not samsung that's slowing down these updates or giving slow updates, it's the carriers. xD
Look at samsung, they released GB a month or two/three if you count the leaks. That's like the second or third phone to get GB officially, aside from the nexus one and nexus s? Which are google phones so of course they'd get it first. Samsung doesn't handle the updates for a T&t, verizon, sprint or t-mo, they don't. So they've done their job, it's all up to the carriers to finish this up.
thats only partially true..
the carriers do work with Samsung and Google to get out the updates but I work for Tmobile and its not an Over the Air Update on the Galaxy S phones. The updates are through a website that Samsung set up that you download it while synced to a pc and the updates so far have caused more bugs and headaches than they have been worth..
of course thats for peeps that wait for official updates, not for us who mod and use this site.
not saying by any means that its a horrible phone, just not my choice personally thats all...
everyone has thier own opinions and i have just always had great luck with HTC is all...
I would go for EVO 3D. Not only because it is better in everything compared to the Sensation and all that 3D bull****, but mostly because it looks fabulous. Best looking HTC ever in my opinion.
i would go for the Evo 3D aswell ,
apparently is will come to Europe , when it does , i'll be first in line to get 1

Also if you play games a Lot, then the Sensation is a better bet, the Adreno 220 is faster than the rest of the GPU's found in phones ...
regards.
Lawl where did you get that info bout the adreno 220 being faster?
The benchmarks of the 1.5ghz model? Mind you it's running a dual core 1.5 ghz, meaning two 1.5 ghz compared to a 1ghz/1.2ghz dual core. So what does that say?
Point being it was the 1.5 ghz model, not the 1.2ghz own, so we can't say which is better right now. Plus we have to remember the sgs 2 caps it's frame rate.
Anyways, as far as GPU's are concerned however, I'm pretty sure the power vr sgx543 is the best right now. Sad samsung didn't make that move.
Thanks chaps for your points, all valid.
SGS2 does look to have the hardware and i know i will up set myfellow Scot, but I LIKE SENCE...when i look at the screen it tells me what i need to know. then its back into the pocket..
I will now goto Tmob on 16th and haggle a free phone with more calls and data or threaten to leave..........wish me luck.
Thanks again.

Moving on from Hero to Evo 4G LTE

After 3 years, I think I am going to renew my contract with Sprint and get the HTC Evo 4G LTE. According to a pole here, it looks like 8 others of us are as well. Who's going? If you can but aren't, why aren't you?
I'm going.
I just flashed nfinitefx's Sprint RUU on my Hero to get reacquainted with Sense hahaha.
Happy for you guys. Im going to the GS3 just seems all around better, HTC has been dropping the ball lately and sense gets boring fast time to try something new. EVO LTE is ok but battery life and no removable battery, no sd card slot, and HTC just kills the phone for me.
I'm going as well. Hopefully they ship the preorders today.

The Evo LTE does have an sd card slot, and most of the (albeit early) reviews are reporting excellent battery life, in line with the other One X phones.
I was deciding between the GS3 and this phone.
I'm going to assume that the Sprint GS3 is gonna have the S4. If so, then the two things that the GS3 does better than the EVO LTE doesn't is the removable battery and a better camera.
The rest of the features of the S3 are gimmicky at most, smart stay is the only feature that I liked.
EVO LTE has better design, better screen, dedicated camera button (ME GUSTA), and a nicer UI.
But if Sprint gets the Quad-core version, then all bets are off D:
Interesting...first I considered the HTC EVO 3D, which many of us Hero's went to. Then I decided to wait for the HTC EVO 4G LTE, which I guess many of us are going to now too.
sorry to see you guys go, but hopefully if you still want to mess with your hero's from time to time there will be a group of us holdouts still working on things. i know ill be here until at least this coming fall when i get extra cash to buy a new phone.

How has HTC been dropping the ball? I have a friend with the Galaxy I (epic I think) and was super disappointed in Samsung support, and only relatively recently got cyanogen. Plus, I was planning on the galaxy nexus, but by the time it came to sprint, it was already old. Wouldn't be surprised if the S3 is the same. And obviously this hero has done well for me, and my friend's evo 3D is like a tank. Furthermore, I like HTC's gesture of allowing bootloader unlocking (not that I will use their's).

Im not defending the Galaxy 1 but your talking two years ago the S2 has ICS. EVO3D was just an Evo with updated camera i know people who have a GS2 and EVO 3D and the GS2 beats EVO hands down. As far as support i have a lot of samsung products and never had a problem in that department. Support for my phone doesnt matter since im on here if i needed help with anything. Lets be honest most people getting the LTE are going to flash a new rom without sense anyway so why get a sense phone. Its nice and all but I like the less intrusive touchwiz. Just a matter of opinion if the S3 isnt quadcore then i might have to look at the EVO LTE
I'm seriously considering the new EVO LTE as well. My only concern is 1) Going back to Sense after loving aosp on my hero for the last 1.5 year and 2) the size of the phone.
I'm not sure there's any getting away from the phone size, though. The only other viable option in my mind is the GNex and its almost as big. As far as going back to Sense and not being able to flash ROMs right away, i'll just have to deal with that until some awesome dev on here figures out how to crack it. That's the main reason i'm still considering the GNex. The ROM options are already pretty sweet for that. But, it seems clearly inferior in most of its specs to the LTE.
I'm going. Will still pop in here every so often, though.

I woulnd't worry about the EVO LTE having a lack of developers. Most of the OG Evo devs (including some that used to be here) are definitely getting it.

Supposedly it isn't quite as bad - and from what I've seen, the UI is closer to stock than older versions of Sense, in a good way. On the other hand, there are still downsides to it, like the overaggressive memkill settings HTC put in, which make it tough to do true multitasking, along with the large - smaller, but still large - memory requirements. I've always liked Sense, though, and the memkill settings are easily fixed once root is attained.
I'm getting the EVO LTE, as long as Customs doesn't find heroin or anything in the shipment to further delay it. The Hero has been great. It was first Android phone so it will always hold a special place in my heart. But I've been ready for a "superphone" since a week after I bought my Hero. The EVO LTE is going to have top notch dev's, mod's, rom's and support. There is no question in my mind that EVO LTE community will out shine the GS3 community.
Yeah, I was anticipating the HTC EVO 4G LTE and I found out about the U.S. Customs delay. I was like oh no..., but now I find out that I have to wait longer because we're under some Sprint Wireless Advantage Club and it's essentially an employee account and they get phones a lot later to make way for customers...so I have to wait like a month or two. It depends. I can't wait until I can get the phone though.
I wish you all luck with the Evo LTE. One thing I noticed about people that buy HTC phones is that they seem to want to root and put AOSP on there HTC phones to replace sense . People do the same with samsung but not as much as large as HTC phone owners. Its as if you guys know sense is a memory hog and is pointless yet you'll still buy the phone.
I also am leaving the Hero but for the Galaxy S3, also the hero was my first android experience. Honestly sense has been around since windows mobile 6.1, but back then it was called touch flow. Not too much has changed just eats more memory now and looks a lot nicer. The battery life on these HTC phones is bad to simply put it and im not talking about people on these forums. I used an HTC sensation it went from 100% to about 30 in 4 hours. All im stating is a matter of opinion I could be wrong but thes are just my experiences with HTC.

Sense 4.0 is beautiful. I much prefer it over AOSP ICS IMHO. Even Sense 3.6 is aesthetically appealing. Not much of a lag due to the 1GB RAM in this phone. My battery life is wonderful and I spend all sending hundreds of texts a day, checking xda and constantly checking facebook.

I agree with dastin. Sense has gone through a lot of changes but it gets better with each version. I've been running Sense 3.6(Mean ROM) too on my evo 3D and it runs great.
