I recently installed CM7.1/n198 on an SD card (Sandisc 16G class 2) and have been happy wih everything except one thing.
I am unable to download the Nook App (2.7.2) from the market, which claims I am not installing from a compatible device.
Since this is a clean install (gapps -gb-20110613-signed), I dont believe there is a way to revert my Google Market back to the 'old version'.
How can I get Nook to run on my Nook? It seems counterintutive.
You could try clearing market app data. Settings->Aplications->Market->clear data.
If that doesn't work you'll need to probably change your dpi, theres a couple tutorials around the forum on how to get the market working, most of them just work for some time. Since the market isn't a 100% working with the NC you'll need to do the clear data steps from time to time.

You still got a market update... you can revert to the older market as described by freezing/renaming/deleting marketupdater.apk and going into manage apps and uninstalling updates.

As far as I am aware, the google apps package people are including with the nightly updates is still the old market. Yours may have later updated on its own...
Indeed Market DID update on its own, so reverting (a few times actually) did the trick eventually.
Do we know why the market claims the nook color cannot run the B&N Nook app?

Long story. Just stick with the old market or move up to nightly 200 where the LCD density was resent to 160.
Has anyone been able to install the new version of Kindle (3.4.0) for Android on a rooted Nook Touch? It's supposed to work for Android 2.1+, but the update doesn't show up in the Market for me, and if I uninstall Kindle entirely, and then re-download and reinstall it, I get version 3.2.0 again. If I try to sideload the apk, I get a Parse Error.
I'd really love to get the updated app installed, because it shows the page numbers from the original book, which would be useful leading my students through a textbook.
OK, then, let me ask a different question: has anyone successfully installed the new Kindle for Android version, or am I the only one with a problem?
Seriously, has no one else tried to install the new version of Kindle for Android? You can tell what version you have by looking at the app in Titanium Backup. It's a serious bummer that I bought this Nook because I could easily read both Nook and Kindle e-books, and less than two months later the thing won't install the latest version of Kindle.

3.2.0 is the version from market and works on all nook touch. 3.4 is from Amazon appstore and is DRM protected. The apk will only installed on a Nook touch signed in with the orignal amazon account.

No, 3.4.0 is also in the Android Market--I know that because 1) the new version was announced on Android Central (and a lot of other places), 2) the version number is listed in the Android Market description, and 3) I successfully downloaded it, from the Market, onto my phone, and verified the version number in Titanium Backup. I also just verified, on my phone, that page numbers work (though you have to tap the bottom of the screen or select "Go to" to see them).
Good idea to try the Amazon Appstore version--but unfortunately, Kindle for Android doesn't even show up in the Appstore for my Nook. That does lead to another question, though: has anyone successfully downloaded and installed Kindle 3.4.0 from the Amazon Appstore?
Actually, I just tried another tactic, and transferred the 3.4.0 Titanium Backup files to the Nook. I first tried restoring 3.4.0 over the top of 3.2.0--this appeared to be successful, but when I opened the app it was still 3.2.0. I then uninstalled 3.2.0 and tried the restore of 3.4.0 again, and it simply hangs: it's apparently, for some reason, not compatible with the Nook Touch. I wonder if there's some way that could be fixed?

Thanks. I have the Amazon Appstore installed--that's not the problem. The problem is Kindle for Android, which doesn't show up in the Amazon Appstore (and I have copies of the APK of Kindle for Android). I am able to find and install other apps from the Appstore, though for some apps I get a Parse Error when I try to.

I have BN 1.1.0 for the Touch. Kindle 3.2 shows up when I go to Market - not Android Central but the google market. Kindle 3.4 shows up when I go to Amazon Appstore. My understanding is that for Market, only apks that install shows up.
What version of Touch are you on and how did you root the Touch?
I'm using SalsichaNooter, though I tried to install the APK under MinimalTouch (which is I what I rooted with this time, after doing a factory restore). It is definitely not the case that all apps that show up in the Appstore can be installed: for example, Application Folder Pro is one I've purchased (for my phone) and that shows up on the Nook, but I get a "Parse Error" when I try to install it.
And yes, you're right that it says 3.2 in the Android Market, under the actual version number; I was looking instead at the changelog, which says 3.4. However, that's only for the Nook: for my Evo 3D, the version that shows up in the Android Market is 3.4.
Before I go putting another ROM on this thing, have you actually been able to install version 3.4.0 of Kindle for Android from the Amazon Appstore, and if so, what ROM are you using?

The rooters don't change the actual ROM you're running. Not sure what you mean by another ROM.
Chances are it's not running properly because it needs Froyo or higher, meaning that the NST is just not compatible no matter what you try.

All of the custom ROM's available for the Nook Touch are the same version of Android, 2.1 (Eclair), but there are several different ROM's available (four that I know of): in the usual Android parlance, if the firmware is modified at all (even though it's based on the original firmware), it's called a new ROM. When you root your Nook, you're not merely rooting it, but actually changing some of the stuff in the original ROM, including, for example, the framework files--if you look inside the MinimalTouch package, for example (since that one comes as a ZIP file, it's easy to look at), you'll see all the files that are changed.
However, as a later poster noted, the problem seems to be that Kindle 3.4 runs only on Android 2.2+, rather than Android 2.1+; Amazon doesn't appear to have bothered to document this, and that's the source of my confusion.
Safe to say, then, "putting another ROM on" won't fix this problem. You'll still be running 2.1 Eclair, no matter which rooter you try. I think you're stuck with the older Kindle version on this device, at least for now. I'm not aware of any ongoing efforts to put Froyo on this device.

They're not different ROMS. They just aren't. All you're doing is rooting the device, not replacing the ROM.
I rooted my Nook a while back (still even on the 1.0.0 firmware), but only now started looking into updating it. I saw the update for the Kindle on my Sensation versus the NST, but I'm not sure I see a compelling reason to try to force the update (though a real page numbers would be nice).
Is the hardware even capable of running Froyo? Maybe it's just the e-ink screen, but it seems slow enough just with Eclair.

It's already been stated, but to summarize:
The new Kindle app needs Android 2.2 and above, the NST is only at 2.1.
There are no roms for this device at the moment, and probably never.
See attached older version that I just installed on a Simple Touch no problem.
3.2.0.35 shows up in the Market on my rooted NST. It's just the newer version that doesn't.
Newspapers
I have recently discovered that reading newspapers/magazines is only really possible with the older versions (Kindle-2.0.5.103970165.apk : http://www.freewarelovers.com/android/app/kindle) because the overview page of a multistory object on the newer versions 3+ does not accept gestures (swipe up and down are ignored or interpreted as clicks) so it is impossible to scroll. The gestures work fine in every other part of the program just not in the overview. The only apparent downside of version 2 is that there is no dictionary which I sometimes miss.
I've been reading a lot of people reporting that they first tried TouchNooter and this failed, they then had to restore and try a different rooting method. Can this maybe mean that TouchNooter doesn't work anymore for some reason? Are there people which have recent successes with it?

I tried it and failed, and panicked at first. I then realized I could reboot the device, but nothing happened still. ros82 has a great thread with backups, shown here
Anyway, I took the recovery option one, and put it into my NOOK Simple Touch and rebooted. It said resetting to factory, wait till done. When it finished, I was rooted for some reason!
Apparently that "restore to factory" doesn't get around to restoring the boot partition.
I can confirm TouchNooter works - I used 2.1.31 to root a new nook touch that I bought over the weekend (twice).
The device was running 1.1.0 out of the box and I had updated to 1.1.2 before the first attempt. That worked but "device info" showed 1.1.0 after the root, and I couldn't force update the firmware after. Market was working after the 1-day wait as well. I used the 8 hard resets to restore the device and tried again on the stock firmware. Same results. I ended up using the MinimalTouch method after updating to 1.1.2 to root while retaining the firmware update.
Touchnooter did NOT work for me.
I have a new NST, came with 1.1.1 stock, then I manually upgraded to 1.1.2. Registered to B&N, have downloaded several books and transferred some epub and pdf files.
Then tried to root:
Upon starting up the NST with the Touchnooter SD image I created, I got the touchnooter instruction screen, then 20 seconds later did see a quick flash to black, then immediately the Nook startup screen appeared with the 5 dots along the bottom.
The screen stayed there with only the first dot black and it hung.
Waited awhile....10 or 15 min.
Took out the SD card, powered the Nook off then back on without the Touchnooter SD card in it.
The Nook was NOT rooted. Went right to stock Nook screens with my books loaded.
Tried it 2 more times, same result.
WHY doesn't this work on my Nook?

Touchnooter not working
I am sure there is something I can do to get this working, no? Had firmware 1.0.1, used the Touchnooter 2.1.31 booted and saw the little android icon and I started the process. Skipped the sign in and enabled location service, then flash of the screen and back to nook reader home. Restart, no Android icon, just e-reader home screen. Updated firmware to 1.1, retried touchnooter 2.1.31, still nothing comes up on startup, just acts like an e-reader, SD card inserted or not.
Sounds to me like some of you are either missing the prompt to select the launcher on 1st restart, or it's not working for some reason. Do you see the little Button Savior button on the right of the screen? If everything worked, you should be able to use that to get back to ADW. If that doesn't work, your default launcher may be set to B&N's home screen. I'd recommend a complete wipe and try again. TN has worked very well for me on 1.1.x, but be sure to set ADW as your home default on 1st launch if that's what you want.
If you have updated to 1.2, be sure to read around before trying to root. Things have changed a bit, apparently.

Arrgg. Unfortunately no, I do not see the button savior on the right. I had it rooted a few months back and restored it to the plain e-reader before trying to re-root again. I thought I did a complete wipe by updating to 1.2. Should I go back to 1.1 and then try the µSD?

I've tried auto-nooter and touchnooter and nothing I try works. My Nook is running version 1.1.0 and WAS rooted before but refuses to root now. I have the nooter image (linux using dd if= method) on the sd card but rebooting the device with the nooter card in it never ends with a rooted nook. It simply boots up normally and then complains that the sd card needs to be formatted. I've tried restting/deregistering the nook and trying again. No dice. This thing will not root.:crying:

- for NST FW 1.2 upgraded from NST with recovery image 1.1 only 'tinynooter' will work (as for now) . You will gain root + adb but not the Market/Google Play.

I.1 - do a full recovery (6 failed boot's in a row [reset the device just after it starts booting])

I was having problems getting touchnooter to work. Running linux and using the dd command I found out I was screwing up the dd command slightly. I'd place the sdcard in my card reader and it would show up on my system as /dev/sdb1 (for instance) so I did the dd if=touchnooter.img of=/dev/sdb1 command but this produced a card that failed to boot even though the rooting software was clearly installed. Changing it to dd if=touchnooter.img of=/dev/sdb fixed the issue and a couple of days of problems rooting my nook became instant root upon reboot.
Now the problem I'm having is installing apps (or finding them). I try and install a google android app and it refuses to install saying my system security isn't setup to allow unsigned (or something like that) apps. I cannot find any security settings anywhere in what is provided by touchnooter that changes this. Also, while I can find a kindle reader app without issue in he amazon app store with a browser on my computer, it refuses to appear when I search the amazon app store from the rooted nook! WTF?
There seems to be a number of issues, in fact. The Opera Mobile app doesn't function, I cannot get gmail set to sync automatically, and I cannot get my yahoo email setup to work. Add to that the inability to install any apps beyond the base provided by touchnooter...I'm thinking of trying again only using the auto-nooter instead.

I suggest updating your nook to FW version 1.2
root with tinynoot as osowiecki shows in the previous post
you can then use adb to install apps
tinynoot will install nookcolortools- open this - and deselect and then reselect install non-markets apps.
this will allow you to install non-market apps
tinynoot doesn't include any google apps.
instead of gmail, I use k9mail - with this I am able to set up my gmail and other emails - all in one app.

Process:

Progress:
I created the recommended backup, installed GlowNooter root, and connected to WiFi (which I have confirmed through the browser app)
Problem:
I opened YouTube and attempted to sign into my google account and received an error message. I tried to open the amazon market app, to obtain Titanium Backup to fix the issue but "content could not be downloaded because of a network connectivity error." I have verified again that I am connected to the WiFi and that it is working (on the nook). Going back into YouTube now causes the YouTube app to crash and returns me to the nooter home screen.
Notes:
Some part of the login process did work because my gmail recognizes my username.
Also, since I was stuck and frustrated, I tried to refresh my email (to see if it worked) gmail crashed. Now when I click on gmail it automatically tries to refresh itself and crashes every time.
I am hoping to avoid having to activate my backup.. but do not know how to proceed. I would be grateful for some assistance.
FWIW I just re-rooted my NST recently (after upgrading from 1.1.2 to 1.2.1) using the rooting tool Nook Manager, then I used NTGAppsAttack to install (Google) Market, GMAil, ... apps. I found the combo of these two tools to be far easier to use than the other available rooting tools which I had tried and had used when I first rooted my NST a few years back (Nook Manager did not exist then).
If you plan to use Nook Manager you'd have to activate your backup -- or, better yet, use Nook Manager to reset to factory-fresh stock for a guaranteed clean-start for your 2nd rooting attempt (which was what I did in my 2nd iteration).
