Just wondering if any owners tried changing the density manually or with lcddensity. Wondering if touchwiz recognize any change in the density. Would love to change this to 200

I'm just curious as to what changing the density actually does. Since obviously you can't physically change the screen density, what is the advantage of tricking the phone into thinking it's different via software?

Usually changing the density makes the screen look more high res by making everything smaller and fitting more information on the screen. If your still using your galaxy s try out lcddensity and change to 200. Touchwiz on 1st galaxy s didnt adjust well to changing the density. default is using 240
Was the first thing i did. Set mine to 202 out if habbit, as most devices get issues with wonky UIs at 200 or below.
Device looks great on 202. The only thing that distorts slight is the quick access tools ( sound and screen rotation only) in the notification bar.
The posituve outweighs the nefative for me.

+1 for screenshot. I run my DHD at 190. I use LCD Density Changer which has a compatibility mode to make problem apps run full screen, but it needs root

The best is set by default.
Cause it does'nt look like it's the best. Every LCD display has one specific resolution that is the sharpest and clearest.
The fonts certainly dont look like the display is running at native resolution, but the rest does so maybe its a font problem.
Default density is 120, cannot be lower.
I we test the app and it doesnt work on my Galaxy 3, later I have found that some G3 user said that that app messed the screen and that he cant unlock any more (digitizer data differ from the real situation)...

same here can do the density change but you will be stuck @ unclock glass green => u can not unclock the phone anymore => reflash is the only way... do it with caution!
This is with the stock launcher, adw is imo the best for density changes.
One is with default (120) the other is with 100. I also tried 90 but it is too low.
You can unlock if you swipe up/down. I didn't manage with a left/right swipe
Also if you are scared just use a temp change (doesnt save the settings and on cold reboot restores default).
Its safe.
I usually keep the default setting and temp change when I need the change

They're smaller cuz of the lower dpi (160)
if it were set higher (which you can do buy editing the build.prop) it would just be like any other device stretched out.
By having the lower dpi the space on the screen is used better and more icons/lists/etc can be displayed
also if you want you can download adw launcher from market and adjust how many icons you want on the homescreen thus making them bigger or smaller to your liking.

My build.prop doesnt have it, weird. I even pulled a copy to the pc and searched it. root/system/build.prop, right?
So thats probably why lcd density changer didnt/doesnt work either. The icon sizes are fine for me with the stock launcher, but i installed launcher pro and the icons get even smaller. i just reset my phone cause ive done so much crap to it the last couple days. I still havent found out what way to use it that i can live with

The official 2.2 build does not have this line in the build.prop

PS: Yes, you can just add it.
It works fine and will make the adjustment. I'm having no issues with a dpi of 200 except for it cutting off names a bit short on the bottom with an incoming phone call. Rotating to portrait solves the issue just fine. It doesn't hinder performance, but somtimes can make it a bit tough to read who is calling you.
ADW.Launcher EX was just recently released ($3.28) which allows you to increase the size of the icons. It does a ton of new, really cool features. Here's a quick video explaining few of the app's features:

Why dont you give it a shot though. btw i think 200 will be amazing, since the screen 4.3, but i dont know how the ui will hold up. I remember on the sgs1, some of the apps, ie music, etc, looked odd since it didnt fit properly.

Big thing for me this. I like 190dpi.
I presume 'LCDDensity for Root' by Elviss Kustans, can change the screen density until you reboot. But without root 'LCD Density Changer' by Beansoft won't be able to change it permanently.
I'm looking forward to full CF root (I'm looking forward to getting my phone first )

I use 167 on my hd2, and it is perfect, more is too big.
Shame it messes up the samsung widget bar on the notification screen the ones with two words have the line through them
Yeah, thats the problem with lower density's on manufacturer skins. on a stock build like nexus s, lower densities look crazy good. some apps have problems though. I think maybe in the future once custom roms start getting made, maybe the chefs can change the framework so things dont look misaligned.
Ibasket still looks awful on 225... i got round the dialer by using go dialer...

Figured this one out. When the phone does a soft reset (I think that's what it's called, one where it reboots from the screen animation only) it won't reconnect the wifi until it's toggled on and off. Setting the screen density as the default so the device fully restarts with this density set each time seems to fix this issue.
Rooted and now running at 196dpi. Its so much better than 240dpi.
I was thinking to myself that I was getting used to the stock dpi, then I rooted and realised how wrong I was lol!
Only problems are the drop down toggle menu and the dialer, which have already been, mentioned.

Okay, great device... but really annoying that most apps don't make use of the extra real estate on the screen. Most apps are just blown up versions of for example the Galaxy S2 apps. Meaning most apps are the same but 5.3/4.2 = 1.26 times bigger That's at least a pity The contacts app displays the same amount of contacts on a screen as the Galaxy S2 or S but... with a 1.26 x bigger font (compared to the S2) and 5.3/4=1.33 (lol) x bigger font compared to the Galaxy S
Fortunately there seems to be a setting in the accessibility settings that allows the user to decrease the font in some stock apps. Unfortunately this doesn't work. At least not on my device. Anyone got this working?
And yes, ICS would be a great improvement for such a big screen device.

You'd have to root it first, and then push the density down. Not ideal, as some apps then run in a box on the screen, but it does make for smaller fonts, and you can cram more widgets on the screen etc.
I run my HD2 at 160, but then again I have had my eyes lasered!

change the value of lcd from 240 to 192
See the difference.
U can always go back
All apps wont be scaled to the new lcd value.
eg: TW in sgsII does not scale.
However i always used this value and did not use TW.

I think change the font size setting in gingerbread is for display text in text editor or web browser instead of the launcher and most other application as they have their own fixed font size. You cannot do anything to those applications as they has been programmed that way.

With stock apps I mean the Samsung apps. In the accessibility settings there's an option to change the font size "in the following applications: S planner, Email, Contacts and Messaging" (as stated in the accessibility settings)
Unfortunately this setting doesn't work on my jk4 rom. Maybe others have luck on other roms. Seems like a very usuable option for the note.

My lcd.density (or so) was set to 320 on stock!
I changed it to 280 and the system looks now nicer!
Actually, I measured the tab and my calculation would be around 270-280 dpi.
Has anybody other/better data?
By the way, 1st problem after changing lcd density is in S Memo! Background seem to have a fixed 'smaller size' which are then placed wrongly
Another impact: The email-widget does not fit on screen any more (using Launcher Pro) ... Hope in ICS they will fix some of those screen size problems!

I didn't try it myself yet but I bet it will give a whole lot of trouble with almost every Samsung app on this xhdpi device. Like HTC, they exactly target the screen for which they write software. Unlike most android apps in the market, targeting screens with different specs isn't important. Scaling isn't a requirement for these stock apps. ICS will not solve the problem, because it is still up to the developer which screens will be targeted.
Anyway, back to the original question, I think it is safe to conclude that the font setting doesn't work for anyone. So it is a bug.
I have rooted my phone and tried to use Spare Parts to change the font size to Extremely Small. It works instantly and make the application much more usable. But, there is a problem: The font size will change back to Normal after few hours by itself. Anyone has the same problem?

that method also won't scale down graphics to match the smaller fonts. LCD Density Changer accomplishes that and works well.
I'm not sure how widely known this is, but it's possible to change the DPI of your new phone if (like me) you find that everything is too big. It's super easy too.
1. Go to About Phone > Software Info and tap the Build number 7ish times to unlock the developer options menu.
2. Back out to settings, enter the Developer options menu now at the bottom of the list.
3. Scroll down until you find the Minimum width setting in the Drawing section about 3/4 of the way down. It's set to 411dp by default on the S8+.
4. Change it to whatever you prefer! Higher number = everything gets smaller, Lower number = everything gets bigger.
Enjoy your extra space!

If the keyboard looks weird.. Go up on DPI because its breaking up the design.

Is your AOD centered (if you have it enabled)? I set my S8 to 420 and the AOD was slightly skewed to the right. Tried pushing it down to 411, which I guess is default on the S8+ and it re-centered the AOD. I'm assuming there are various 'accepted' DPI settings that won't break the layout; I think somebody listed them for the Pixel on Reddit, but I can't find a similar listing for the S8. Any ideas?

I also noticed it not being centered after changing the DPI, and what's worse after setting it back to 411 it's still not centered
I'm at 480 and it's great. My aod is centered, but isn't it supposed to move a little very slowly to prevent burn in?

I use SwiftKey for keyboard and Nova launcher. Hence do not see any other issues

449 for me. Been using it since S7e lollipop Beta. No issues I also use nova
500 here w/ all apps full-screen, bold font just a shade above tiny. So glad this is able to be done w/o root, along w/ multi window for any app!
Any recommendations for a bigger option xd... tried 351 but doesn't seems great.. 411 is too small for me
600 turns on tablet mode, and things are working well. Two issues I've noticed so far:
* The battery icon in AoD doesn't render correctly
* "About Phone -> Status" page causes com.android.phone FC - doesn't seem to have any ill effects besides not being able to open that page. Need to go 599 or lower to get it to open again.

Hey, can you elaborate on the multi-window? I haven't messed around with mine that much yet, and I haven't seen anything mentioned anywhere else.
I remember doing this on the Note 7 I think and I remember that though I liked it, I wanted to go back, so when I set it back to the DPI that it was before, it didnt actually restore everything to the way it was. I noticed someone on here mentioned they set it back to 411 and that did NOT bring things back to stock. Can anyone else confirm?
Im on the s8+ and I love smaller icons/txt so I'd like a higher DPI, but scared that if I dont like it, I will not be able to get everything back to stock without restoring the phone, which I really dont want to do lol.
Also, what is AoD?
I use Nova, so not sure what it stands for.

I haven't noticed anything that doesn't change back. If there are certain font sizes etc that don't change back, I would suspect a reboot would fix that, but I can't tell you for sure. AoD is 'Always on Display', the clock/date/battery/etc display that comes up on the screen when the screen is "off".

Sure thing!
Settings>Advanced Features>Multiwindow: Enable both
Developer options>Force activities to be resizable: Enable
Once you've done that, hold your recents button to use multi-window whenever you'd like. I tend to use the feature for most of my daily work, and in my opinion is the most useful native addition in years.
I should mention as well, enabling "screen pinning" (Settings>Lock Screen and Security>Other Security Settings>Pin Windows) and using it when still wanting to keep another app full screen is very beneficial! Once enabled, you can access the feature w/ the recents button as well. Just hold down on the app.

Any chance that someone can change the DPI to something and then back to stock (411) and see if everything (keyboard, AoD, etc) return back to stock too.

What I meant was, they do return back but I can't tell you definitively that every single setting is identical.
