Performance Improvements with 2.3.4 - Nexus One General

Hey guys,
Do you notice the performance improvements with the new 2.3.4 update? I have noticed that the screen responsiveness has improved significantly, especially in the browser and in the official Facebook app.

I agree, the screen sensitivity is better while using the browser and when typing on the keyboard. So far that is the only difference that I've noticed. I'll give navigation a whirl this afternoon.

I have just recently updated so have not notice much difference. Maybe I will keep looking at it longer to see.

Don't see any difference here.

Initially I thought I observed some perceptible improvement in scrolling smoothness and touch responsiveness, but at this point I can't honestly say it's not just placebo effect from the update.

For the Nexus One user, the only real "improvement" 'till now is to lose root. I've just received GRJ22 OTA a couple of minutes ago, and i'm going to "hope" that, at least, battery life will show some kind of improvement.
Of course, i also have faith on XDA's guys to find a new way to have root on this one

Battery life has increased by atleast 15% + more responsive.

Battery life still sucks.
There is already a root for it. Just flash the su zip file. Not hard.

My battery battery life is much better now. Currently at 36% after 24 hours. Normally I got around 18 hours.
But maybe my usage has been somewhat lighter because I have been busy.
Stock 2.3.4 and no root.

I never had the battery issue on 2.3.3 and Gingerbread actually brought me a with MUCH better battery life than Froyo, no further change in that on 2.3.4.
After a day on 2.3.4, it seems a tad bit faster than 2.3.3 and the BACK button seems to be working properly again. Previously, it took multiple taps in order for the phone to register a click and I'm pleased it's finally fixed in 2.3.4. Also, the 'black screen' bug seems to have gone but I need further testing. I'm pretty pleased with the update so far.

mine is running definitely smoother - before it would stutter after a few hours of use - I would have to reboot the phone to clear up the glitches
so far so good - I'm happy!

Same here, running stock 2.3.4, the update has fixed the black screen glitches and the 2 second delay issues. I feel its quite stable now, and the battery life has also improved marginally.

Battery life has improved so much since I flashed 2.3.4! Used it as normal today and I still have 50% left

7 hours 5 minutes on battery, down to 64%. Minimal use.
At least I should beat my 11 hour time yesterday. Something was boned up yesterday, today it is seeming better.

Really appreciate the feedback regarding battery life. Can anyone put up a bit more info with the N1 setting (wifi sleep policy, screen auto brightness, etc).
I'm still sceptical with this battery improvement after being 'traumatised' with bad battery life upon upgrading to 2.3.3 compared to 2.2.2. 2.3.3 can't even last 1/2 day compared to easily getting full day with Froyo 2.2.2 with my usage pattern.
I'll stick to 2.2.2 at the moment until clearer information available. I'm not going through the hassle of downgrading from Gingerbread to Froyo again.
Thank

Sure about that?
So far i have only read, that this bug still exists. Also the issue report on the google mobile page hasn't been marked as solved by a google employee.
btw, I'm still on 2.3.3

Battery life is at 50% after exactly 9hrs with phone idling most of the day except for maybe a combined 20-30mins of web browsing earlier. Doesn't seem great, maybe better than before? I've had Wifi Sleep on Never, although I have been at work with no Wifi to connect to.

Feels smoother and the battery life has improved some so far. But, I did not have battery issues with 2.3.3

50% for 9h of mostly idling? Not that good compared to Froyo 2.2.2. My N1 running Froyo 2.2.2 only consume 20%-25% for 9h.

And especially so when HTC's claimed "standby time" on 3G is "250 hours"
LOL
They must make completely insane ridiculous numbers up I think.

Battery massive improvement after update?

I posted this on another forum... and got some positive feedback.
The update just miraculously increased my battery life tenfold!
I am 7 hours 12 minutes in and I am at 80% (using the battery indicator provided in settings, not by battery widget). I unrooted to install the update (yet it feels like I still have Herver's ROM). Brightness at 50%.
I didn't use the phone that much today (I had class), but I used it inbetween breaks and whatnot. I guess pretty light usage.
I think the update messed with the radio/wifi performance.
What about you guys?
Edit: I know people have gotten 20+ hours with ROMS, but this is without one.
Hopefully ROMS increase the battery life even more.

Hi patelkedar,
I can't speak for everyone, but according to myself and other users that have responded to my post battery life improvement has been absolutely astounding as of this update.
Blah. Sorry for double thread.
Search didn't go so well I guess.
Anyway, seems like everyone has seen major improvement.
Totally agree. My battery life has improved vastly. I came from fresh 0.3 and EvolutionX. I had excellent battery life with both of those roms too. But I unrooted to give htc a shot at stock again and I am happy. Phone has been off charger since 7:30am and it's now 3:05pm, with moderate usage and on wifi i'm at 78%. I don't know what I would do without my EVO. I love this damn device.
My battery life is phenomenal with the stock update. I was one of the ones who took the plunge and lost the ability to root for the time being but its performing so well I really don't care. They made everything run better and the battery was just a bonus.
unevoked not working after 1.4xxx update
I uninstalled the superpermissions and unrevoked before updating. now it will not root obviously. tried to install setcpu and various other programs but will not work. this sucks.. i see no difference in battery life or speed....a lot of people think an update is a good thing sometimes, but it is not. HTC should just release froyo 2.2
Pretty much if you have alot of Facebook friends the battery life savings will be huge with this update, also if you use a Flickr account battery savings will be huge, it seems they fixed the issue with Flickr causing 100% awake time as well but didn't mention it...crossing my fingers anyway, so far haven't run into the issue after resetting up my Flickr Account.
P.S. The update seems very much worth losing root for now as it seems to have fixed many things not metnioned and some functions are way faster now, going to manage applications loads in 2-3 seconds now versus 10-20 before etc... There seem to be alot of fixes not mentioned.
You guys mind posting your settings?
I'm at 9 hours and 40 minutes with exactly 50% battery remaining, but I haven't been using the phone like crazy. Some light web use and decent amount of texting all throughout the day. This is not an improvement from the pre-update era. Pretty much the same

HTC has released it already. It's Sprint now that has to smooth it over and make sure that it is compatible with their stock applications before releasing it to the masses.

Phone also all around seems smoother in the sense UI especially. I'm enjoying my EVO again and actually using it as a cell phone now instead of a super-rapid-fire-rom-flashing addiction-device. Sometimes I forget that my cell phone is a cell phone and not a netbook (yet) lol. Cheers to HTC for the update!

Ditto. I don't miss the custom ROMs, honestly. I haven't had a single FC since this ROM launched and the device feels much smoother and faster.

[Q] any difference in battery after update?

I remember emailing htc about the battery life issues on the phone and they just kept saying they knew what it was and an ota update would fix it in the near future. Now that ive done the ota and froyo i see no difference, is anyone noticing the same thing i am? I'm sick of barely getting a day when my friend with the evo 4g (ya the one that should be consuming more power) can get like over 2 days doing more than me.
I've actually noticed the opposite. I seem to be getting better battery life. With moderate use I can go 2 days without needing to charge. My friend with an EVO gets about the same. We were both running CM6 at the same time...which was eating my battery a lot faster than this.
The EVO has a higher capacity battery than the DINC. I actually have the same capacity as the EVO which may make a difference.
Same as before the upgrade...
No change for me either from Eclair to Froyo. I still cannot get more than a days use before charging. And I have the Seidio 1750mah battery. Actually, it seemed like I got more usage from the original 1300mah battery than I do from the Seidio.
Just FYI, I have erased my battery stats (from within ClockworkMod recovery) right after upgrading to Sky Raider's 2.01 ROM. So far I haven't noticed any difference from before. I.e., I still get another 30mins of charging whenever I power off my DI, and still only a day's use. My stats show most of my battery use is from the OS... so go figure...
Maybe I just need to give it some more time before drawing any conclusions...
blah
nope, same thing here...it sux so bad that htc wont fix this...its probably the most important part of the damn phone.

I dont have any issues with battery and have the verizon extended battery. I have not used any method to get rid of battery stats.
With Moderate use of 1 day I get an average of 50% - 60% ranging from 6am to 11pm
I notice a slight improvement from Eclair to Froyo.

I guarantee you can find dozens of "battery life sucks" comments for every smartphone forum ever made.
Considering this battery has a mere 300mAh increase in capacity over the G1, has a much bigger screen, and a much faster processor, I am impressed with my DI and its battery life (8hrs with everything on but BT and dozens of apps running+).
FroYo is a slight improvement for me too.
Why not make this thread a poll?
+1, not a huge-awesome-giant-enormous improvement, but definitely noticeable. I'm running 12-15 apps simultaneously and getting probably 10-12 hours? I'll try and benchmark it tomorrow.
Ya I am using te extended seidio battery. You see the crappy thing is that I emailed HTC a month or 2 ago about the battery life and they said they knew what it was and that they would ota fix itsoon. Now we get a big ota and not much change. Let alone also I still have the issue where it drains to like 93% right after I unplug

foyo? or stay on 2.1? is it worth it?

I have been dabating wether or not to flash a froyo rom and modem. I am currently using ee with phoenix kernel and loving the battery life i get out of it. I have searched the threads but not to much pertaining the the battery life of froyo as there is no kernels yet, most replies to battery life on froyo are a simple its good or i get good battery life. I Wa wondering what kind of battery life people are getting with froyo roms. battery life is the 1st on my list of importance so some with respectable performance would be nice to know so i could make my first froyo jump. Thanks in advance.
I've been on it for a few days now (DK17). I don't use any task manager, or juice defender or anything like that. I have a start-up manager (autoruns) and thats it. I unplugged my phone yesterday at 10:30am and 12 hours later I still had 40-45% remaining after some moderate use... angry birds, asphalt and web browsing mainly.
Hope that helps!
I just flashed 2.2 and used it all day at work for texting, calling, facebook and web browsing and after 9 hours at work i had just under 80% battery life left.
If you are after battery life, then stay on 2.1. I have 4 backup batteries and didn't mind going to 2.2, but I did have a considerable battery life decrease. I find myself changing batteries atleast once a day with these beta 2.2 releases. Recently I haven't noticed it as much, but I think that is due to my getting used to the routine of changing batts every 6-8 hours depending on use.
I really do enjoy the perks of 2.2 though. Flash player with Hulu is awesome, faster phone than 2.1, and the developers are doing a great job of getting some custom themes integrated right now, which makes it not only run great, but look awesome.

I've used it the second it came out, some noticeable snags you'll work around just fine. I've had it for atleast 3ish weeks no major setbacks I guess. Just used clock and flashed it. Happy with over all with flash and other new twists....phone can be hairy at times, but I've foun several androids do on 2.2. Speaker everytme you pick up a call with he feature "off". I'd stay with 2.1 for now. My phone took a serious performance hit going to 2.2... something is wrong with that kernel. Not optimized yet maybe?

I don't know about you guys, but I am using ACS's Froyo build and my Epic has never had better battery life. By a large margin.
It seems the latest froyo release has been outstanding in terms of battery life. If you're looking for battery efficiency, definitely go with a froyo rom. If you're looking for performance, go with eclair. All in all however, froyo roms are fairly snappy especially considering they are at stock speeds. Can't wait for battery life increases once froyo roms get UV'd.
EDIT: on second thought, I'd have to recommend froyo either way. The improved web browser performance + flash as well as froyo gapps alone make the jump worth it. There's really no 'lag' to speak of on froyo roms... merely, the phone just seems faster on eclair switching between apps and loading/closing them.
I'm using epic experience 2.0(froyo) and my epic has never performed better. Especially gps locks in like 2-3 seconds even without wireless location check marked. Very fast and smooth. Probably just as fast if not faster than 2.1 overclocked to 1.2. For me it seems anyway. Way worth it in my opinion.

Honest to God I'll never understand comments such as these. If battery life is the most important thing then why the hell did you buy the most power hungry phone? You bought it for performance didn't you???? Performance and battery life are polar opposites. Much like horsepower and fuel economy.
Let me save you some suspense... you'll never get more than a day out of this phone. At least not if you actually use the damn thing. If you travel, take a car charger. If you are in the office, have a charger with you. If your job requires you to be away from power then bring an external battery. The phone lasts a normal work day between charges so install 2.2 and enjoy your phone for what it is... a powerhouse!
Btw, the battery life seems pretty good in comparison to stock 2.1.
Or u can buy one of the double or more life batteries for $100 that comes with a modified battery cover to fit the extended battery, then couple it with a kickass kernel (phoenix) and have the best of both worlds

Battery life with pudding 2.3.4?? Anyone experiencing phenomenal battery life??

I just recently unlocked bootloader, flashed 2.3.4 pudding and rooted and am experiencing insane battery life. For example, this morning I unplugged at 7:30 am and had work at 9 am. I work at AT&T so I am on my phone a significant amount of the day especially compared to the 'heavier' users out there. This morning was extremely slow and I spent most of the morning downloading and installing apps mostly from 4shared.com, heavy usage. Later in the day I used the phone for 3 customer service calls, all fairly lengthy. I also had set my cpu to 1000 MHz using SetCpu and my brightness cranked all the way up. I let 4 of my employees use my phone to demo for customers and showed my front row video of Raging Bull at Six Flags Great America 5 or 6 times. All the while playing Words with Friends with the old lady and sending and receiving about 50 texts. Pretty heavy use and a typical day for me.
It is 8 pm and I am at 40% still!! I am thoroughly impressed after 2 days of flashing new rom.
Please give your feedback on battery life on 2.3.4 and let me and others know ifI you are experiencing something similar.

I stated the phone was mostly idle today. My phone has been idle like that before (entire day) and on 2.2.2 the battery was at 20% or so usually.
edit: IMO testing the battery usage when the phone is idle is probably a more accurate test between 2.2.2. and 2.3.4. It helps see how much battery the background services run on 2.3.4. With the screen on/phone in active use there's too many variables that are draining the battery = tough to make an accurate comparison. That is unless you have some sort of automated test script running that enables the screen and automatically walks through several apps for 2+ hours. I doubt anyone here does that though .

agree with that, especially with screen time going past 1-2 hours.
I'm not rooted or anything... I have AT&T version. I get horrible reception in my home so I usually turn off data network and have wifi on. I was using "extend controls" app from market... no with the update a few things wont work namely the widget to turn off data network connection. I see the problem, it renames the wrong APN (AT&T US Tether)... the default APN is AT&T HSDPA, not sure if its okay to switch. That all said my battery drains VERY fast... Went to bed at around 1am with 50% and was totally drained (phone died) by 8am. My only thought is that it was searching for a signal all night with wifi on...
Any thought on this?
I have had amazing battery life. I closed tonight so my routine was pretty much the same. I usually listen to iheartradio for about 2 hours while im counting down drawers other wise idle except for checking twitter on my breaks. That usually puts me at somewhere between 30-40% and I got home with 70% today...
I've somehow managed to get 2 days and 11 hours while still being at 12%. I haven't really used it much, with only ~3 hours of screen time, but I did use it for about 2 hours to listen to music with.

Glad battery life is looking good. I'd love to see some comparisons to non OEM batteries. I know some say 2k+ mAH but you never know about quality.
I think the dual core CPU is to thank here. If processes are getting completed much quicker, then that means less active CPU time.

Battery Life Rom REALLY Needed

Hello all
I have been roaming around XDA for a very long time now and I finally made an account because I simply cannot find an answer. I have a samsung vibrant and not the 4g nor can I upgrade(long story). I use my phone when I need it and i text alot. But lately my battery life hasn't been any good, I've tried reconditioning and the whole bit and nothing seems to give me my needed battery life. I am currently using ICS passion 13 RC1 and it works great, when Im not doing anything -.-; When I use it like for the internet or text a lot it drains. I got to 48% in 2 hours one time and thats with limited background processes. I know ALL about the keeping background proccesses and data using apps down so I hardly have any apps installed, which is very irritating at times, I dont even use the facebook app for that reason. I tried many different roms and it seemed Axura had done that best at one point but it was taken down or is no longer supported for whatever reason so I am now in search for a rom that can get me through the day. I text a lot and web browse occasionally. I dont have wifi so i cannot use that to save battery life while surfing so thats out. I would appreciate all the help and will try every rom if i have to lol XD
I appologize for the long message but I am so tired of hesitating to use my phone as a smart phone.
I get good battery life on the ICS Euphoria ROM. Your battery could be shot, you might try replacing it.
Any of the 2.3 or newer roms are going to get bad battery life. Fishmanmod's updating of Bionics has been very smooth and getting great battery life for me.
I find that battery life between 2.2 and ics is pretty much identical for me as long as there are no wakelocks preventing deep sleep. I'm currently on CM9 nightly w/ glitch kernel and deep idle enabled in nstools and have no battery life problems.
You could also look into getting an official 1800mah battery if you really need more juice
ICS Slim hands down the best.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA
Your issue is Passion. That ROM chews through battery worse than any I've ever used in the 2 years I've had my phone.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using Tapatalk
Its not just your Rom, I am on the CM9 nightly and noticed ICS ate my battery by noon today. I was down to 3% from 7am. Granted I am toying with it a bit more but I was still at work so I couldnt use it non stop and I wasnt even watching videos or listening to music on it. I have updated the kernel to SubZero 34 to see if that helps.
Chances are, your battery has lost some of its ability to hold a charge. I recommend buying a new OEM battery, chances are it'll increase your battery life by a good two or three hours.
So far, I haven't noticed a significant variation in battery use in various ROMs, I've found battery life to be more determined by the kernel.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA
On a side note, I destroyed my screen by stepping on it a few weeks ago. Ordered a new AMOLED screen (not the LCD knockoffs) and battery life did in crease by about 3-4 hours. Same OS, same battery.
So I think some excess drain could be caused by the screen, which might explain why some phones had such poor battery and others don't. I also no longer have the "graying/shadow" issue that plagues some of these phone.
So far ive had the best battery life with ICS passion RC2.1 and my 1800mah anker battery
Since flashing CM9 and then putting on the SubZero kernel (34) I did a full charge and decharge to test and got 12+ hours on it with my normal use. So I have to say SubZero kernel really helps out if you are on ICS.
I f you dont mind going back to a 2.2 rom I would suggest trying bionix 1.3.1 fishmanMod or Deranged9 fishmanMod alpha 1 both get awesome battery life especially when mixed with juice defender.
I was also using ICS Passion and noticed a significant degradation in available battery life. I have three batteries so I'm confident it was the From. Until then I had been using various Froyo rooms and all seemed to have better battery life than ICS. I personally felt it was more likely to be your kernel choice that would impact battery life. I just switched to the SLIM ICS from and I gave been very impressed with both the battery and the responsiveness. Same quadrant scores as Passion but it feels so much faster

repeat the process for atleast 3 days in a row and you will feel the difference..hit thanks if it helps
@OP ICS is simply not battery friendly. You're going to want to use froyo if battery life is that important to you.
Or you can build a battery friendly ICS rom and let us know how it all is
The later builds of Cyanogenmod9 I have been on the stock kernel and its going all day with moderate use without battery issues.

Any of the 2.3 or newer roms are going to get bad battery life. Fishmanmod's updating of Bionics has been very smooth and getting great battery life for me.

+1
Bionix Fishman Mod is the first custom ROM I've ever installed on my phone and it's battery life is AWESOME. I recently added an 1800 mah battery and I've had 24+ hours on one charge with moderate to heavy use. The ROM itself is smooth as glass and no glitches to speak of.
Trying Bionix

I just installed bionix-V FishmanMod Final 3. Fingers crossed. I don't mind switching back to 2.2 as long as I have better battery. However I did notice when I reinstalled ICS before going to bionix that just factory, not even logging into the market. I got 1 day and 7 hours of battery life, granted I did not do much but text occasionally and some web browsing here and there. Is it possible that the android market is constantly checking on stuff or there is some data being proccessed constantly? I do live in an area where my signal is not great for 3g like 1-2 bars.

Alright so after about a day with the rom, I noticed it's just as bad. I am still getting battery drain and yes I have a new battery in so it is not that. I unplugged it from around noon, did alot of working on it with reflashes and little bits of texting and mostly just scrolling around the O.S. im now at 44%. its been about 5 - 6 hours.
Although I have been switching the battery between 2 phones and their battery meter is very different. like a 5% difference so that may be confusing it. Will update.
