Just got my Focus - Focus General

So my HD2 touch screen decided to die on me and my work has been trying to get me to jump on their AT&T plan. I was hoping to hold out until the HD7S showed up on AT&T (which I now think it never will) but since it's not available I went with the focus.
After using the phone for a few days I really like it. The sound quality is better than my HD2 (running WP7), call quality is excellent (but the focus gets HOT compared to the HD2) and I really like the camera quality. Pictures look really good.
So the bad - and this part confuses me. People were raving about the screen quality of the phone, that the super AMOLED screen was incredible. I think it's terrible! The pixels are the size of waffles compared to the HD2 (yes I am exaggerating). Yes I can see the screen in sunlight better but that's it.
I wanted to get the opinion of some focus users. Do you think the picture/screen quality is good on the phone?
It's certainly not an outright deal breaker but I might jump on the HD7S if it comes out within the next month.
So to recap: Love WP7, love the focus sans the screen and hate AT&T

Mate, I own a Focus now too.
I owned WP7 phones in this order: LG Optimus 7, Omnia 7, Samsung Focus.
One of my friends has a HD7 so I can say I've seen the first phones closely. I think one of my first posts here were about the quality comparison between these phones.
To summarize it, put side by side, the phones are:
Screen size:
HD7>Omnia7=Focus>Optimus7
Screen quality (I know it's subjective but I'll detail later)
Omnia7=Focus>Optimus7>HD7
Battery
Optimus7=Omnia7=Focus>HD7
Phone build quality:
Omnia7>Optimus7>Focus>HD7
Sound quality (overall)
all seemed about the same
That's my impression.
Now about the screen. Put side by side any LCD (Optimus7/HD7) screen with the same thing on alongside Omnia7/Focus and you can't miss the difference. Also, if you're complaining about the size, I can do that too. I can't use only one hand to tap all across the HD7 's screen, I need to use my other hand as well, while on the other phones I can do it with one hand.
To summarize: The contrast, brightness, colors, legibility is simply better on Amoled than on LCD.

The contrast is better and so are the colors but I have to say that's it. At least when comparing the HD2 and the Focus. I am watching netflix, looking at pictures and reading web pages side by side and the HD2 picture is more crisp and text looks better.

That's because Focus screen, which is Super AMOLED, currently uses Pen Tile subpixel arrangement that have half the number of sub pixels as normal LCD screens. It could be problematic to some but not noticeable to others (like me). Next generation Super AMOLED Plus will double sub pixel count and a few other quality improvement.
If you can overcome this subpixel deficient issue, the screen visual quality, especially the contrast, is next to none. Some might argue that the color is too satuated.
I personally will take contrast over pixel counts. Can't stand the forggy screen. That's why I only buy Plasma TVs vs LCD TVs. Die hards would willing to spend $3000+ for a used (no longer in production) Pioneer 50" Kuro plasma TV over any fansy new TVs today because they know how to cheerish the superior black level (and hence the contrast) or a Kuro TV that none of today's HDTV can match.
Also, be careful of screen burn in. Don't let bright text display on the screen too long. OLED screens are very suspectable to burn in because the pixels have a very limited life span.

I hear you on the contrast - I own a 50" Panasonic plasma that I will be hard pressed to part with. I like how the picture looks compared to most LCDs.
I just looked on AT&T's website and they are showing the HD7s on the list of wp7 phones with a coming soon tag. That just happened today so maybe they really are getting it soon. It's got a really nice super LCD on it and once it's in the store I will compare the focus and it closely and get the one I like best.
One point that may keep me on the focus though is the camera is a lot better. I took some low light pictures on the focus and they came out great. On the HD7 - not so great. Maybe the HD7S will be better but we will see.

This is really the screen that has everyone so impressed?

I’m not trying to upset anyone here but I have to be honest about my first thoughts on the Galaxy screen. Tonight I stopped by a T-Mobile store and with my iPhone 4G and HTC Evo, I tried out the T-Mobile Vibrant. I had all 3 phones on, side by side and I really was not too impressed with the SGS screen due mostly to that awful screen door matrix.
When I held the SGS about 6 inches away from my eyes, I could clearly see the pixel grid (or whatever it’s called) and was just put off by it. I can honestly say that I feel the best looking screen is the iPhone’s without a doubt and the Evo comes in 2nd. The iPhone’s small screen is a pretty big problem for me but now I’m just not sure which device to stick with.
Am I really the only one who can see the matrix and is bothered by this??? I really wanted to just fall hard for this phone on first contact and I could have. It just drives me crazy that all 3 phones have really nice features and I’d gladly pay double if not triple to have the best of all 3 devices in one device………
You're right, the pixels do annoy me a little, only coz I'm a perfectionist...
The colours are beautiful though; and in normal use I never notice the pixels...

So I'm assuming you just got used to after a while? I was looking at the notification bar and the battery and other icons seemed to look kind of low res to me. I guess this is what people are talking about when they say it has larger pixels.

Not trying to be annoying, but you only see the pixels, because steve told you so.
I saw the pixels too, because steve told me to look at them, would have never looked if iphone 4's dpi wasn't so hyped.
I think the screen is very much amazing with full brightness, hope you checked that the one in the store was set to 100% brightness too and not just focus on the pixels.
Next time try to do something real with the phone, like watch youtube HD and then do the comparison to iPhone and you will be all happy again.
Good luck

I see what you're saying but I guess I'm not really talking about the pixels but rather the type of screen used that gives that screen door look. Remember, I stated that I still have no issues with the Evo screen which I think looks much better in person than it does in photos online compared to the SGS screen.
On the other hand, if you habitually hold your phone at 6" from your face, you should probably consult an optometrist
In practice, the pixels are indistinguishable from those of the EVO, or of the iPhone 3Gs. But, the overall experience is noticeably richer with the Super AMOLED, IMO.
The screen is the biggest thing this phone has going for it, and why I've decided to stick with it.
I don't think you were seeing the sub pixel's pentile pattern. Sub pixels on any device are way too small to see; a camera macro is needed to see them, and you need to press your lense against the screen itself.
The thing is, it had the same leaf and water live wallpaper that my Evo has and yet I could see that grid on it and not the Evo. 6 inches btw' was just to get closer because I thought I started to notice something.
I own the SGS and ive used a Iphone4 a few times, even though the res did look a little sharper, side by side you would have to be really picky to care, the colour of the SGS is much more noticable than the slight res difference.
The iphone4 just looked bland to me.
I have a iphone 3g for work as well, not as fast as the 3gs, but after owning the SGS for nearly 2 weeks i hate having to use the iphone.
I'm used to the pentile matrix since it was also on my Nexus One.
It definitely can give a rough looking edge on some elements but not enough to make me consider ditching the phone even for a moment.
I certainly cannot see the pentile matrix in photos and videos nor in games.
If pentile goes with denser pixels (say 1280x720) I don't think you'd notice it at all on a 4" screen, but it brings the benefits of increased battery life (though this may be marginal?)
Anyway, it can be seen but it really doesn't bother me personally.

So you're saying that after sometime, one could get used to the screen and no longer notice the matrix? Unless of course Morpheus comes knocking to wake us up.
Now everyone see the pixel.. because Steve said to watch it!
The screen is probably a net downside to the phone for me - high contrast ratio is great, but I'd sooner give that up than compromise on true resolution and sharpness from the PenTile matrix. It seems I'm in a minority with that opinion!
Unfortunately there's no real choice unless I want to start compromising on the rest of the hardware instead. The iPhone does send to set trends, for better or worse, and I do hope the iPhone 4 starts one for higher DPI phones. Going from QVGA to VGA was immediately a massive improvement.
A little real life perspective here would be nice. 4" screen with 480x800 pixel resolution is one of the highest out there already.
I tend to use my phone from about 18" away, so I care what the screen looks like, not the individual pixels. Plus my Sammy can update those pixels 3x faster than the Evo.

Exactly. The monstrous hardware behind the SGS is the real deal here. Even if this "pixelated screen" is a big deal for some people (definitely not my case...), the fluidity, contrast ratio, brightness and colors make more then up for it.
Six inches from your face??! Dude i cant even focus that close. The screen is awesome end of discussion.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
When putting it very close to my face, yes, i can see the PenTile matrix.
But that's complete nonsense- it's visible only if you search for it and the screen is more than sharp enough for reading even small sized text in the browser.
On the other hand, i enjoy the true blacks and amazing colors the screen gives.
The iPhone 4 just can't compare, and while watching videos/playing games/taking or viewing pictures etc. that is a much more important factor.
I won't ever give away better color for some more PPI.
I really like hi-res panels (so much that I bought in 2003 a dell laptop with a 15.4 1920x1200 screen!), but I can assure you that the i9000 res will not be a problem. Of course I would have loved a higher RES - (and 2ghz and and and) but I think that the res is fine for reasonable distance viewing.
I think the real benefit of the screen are the colors, the contrast and the size. After some point the resolution is already good enough that you start focusing on other parameters as well.

What do you think of the screen?

I've got a Desire and had it since launch but today I bought a Desire HD. I like the phone and I like the bigger screen but I can't help but feel a bit disappointed going from AMOLED to LCD.... the colours... the viewing angles.... even considering sending the phone back and staying with the Desire although the phone seems much faster, I can't help but look at the screen and feel disappointed....
What do you guys think?

I can't really understand what's the point in having 180 degrees viewing angle on a phone. Like I would like to look at the USB port when using my phone . All the time you are using it, you are looking directly at it. And the colors are pretty much a matter of opinion - I've seen the Galaxy S screen and it seems over saturated to me. Daylight visibility is very good also. The one thing that is a real advantage of AMOLED over LCD screens is the black. Other than that there is no real reason for HTC to put themselves in the same PR nightmare as they did with Samsung's inability/unwillingness to provide them with enough screens for the Desire. Yesterday I put an invisible shield on my wife's iPhone 4 and looking at the acclaimed Retina Display the first thought that went through my head was "OMG, it's so small" . I wouldn't give up the DHD anytime soon and definately not because of its screen.
I'm perfectly happy with the screen, it is amazing. I don't care about viewing angles, it is not like I look at it from a 45 degree angle.. It's always pretty much 90 degrees.
As with others here I'm perfectly happy with the screen. Also as pointed out the only real plus of an AMOLED based display is the black level which, honestly, isn't that big of a deal for me. Viewing angles is something that always puzzles me. Do people often try to use their phone from obtuse angles? The only time I can think of when I've done this is a quick glance at the screen but since only the power button wakes it up I don't think that will be an issue.
I think you're over-obsessing over something that in real use is a non-issue. I'd really like all these people who complain about viewing angles to give some valid reasons why they think it's such a problem.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Im have no complaints what so ever with the screen. A week into the relationship with my DHD and we are still very much in the honeymoon phase.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
I was the same... going from a Desire to the HD I was so disappointed with the 'washed out' appearance of the screen (I don't care so much about viewing angles)
But you know what... after a few days I really didn't notice it and I still have the Desire (awaiting eBay selling) and when I look at it I think the screen is too saturated!!
I miss the black levels a bit but on the whole I am more than happy with the screen colours now.
They are after all on a par with my laptop and netbook screens and I never complain about them!
This is part of a full review I will be posting on here once I have had a bit more time with the phone, any feedback would be appreciated. I'd like to answer any questions people have in the final review.
The screen.... the screen.... Seeing as the size of it dominates the entirety of the phone, this was always going to be an issue for many people! Before the phone was released I was actively following the LCD vs S-LCD debate and owning a Nexus One, had been treated to the 'contrastific' wonder that is AMOLED.
I'll be honest and say I felt panicked when confronted with the fact this maybe a regular TFT and not an S-LCD screen. Not an AMOLED or a SAMOLED in this day and age how dare they??! Considering Samsungs reluctance to part with the SAMOLED and the much reported worldwide shortage of AMOLED screens this was of no surprise and highly understandable.
Now I actually have the phone in my hand, I curse my stupidity in regards to getting caught up in 'the forum debate' and losing track on reality. As technophiles we all feel a twinge of excitement when quoting the relevant technology our handsets contain to our friends and fellow forum dwellers. I'm not discounting the real world benefits of such technology, but sometimes we tend to trust more in the branding terms than the actual real world performance.
After owning an AMOLED Nexus I cannot deny that the contrast levels are unbeatable (Samsung Galaxy S aside). Watching movies on the screen was a joy, especially in dark scenes when the black levels came through in all their glory. Personally, I liked the colour saturation (or over-saturation) which gave the display an eye grabbing brilliance which even next to the iPhone 4's lauded Retina Display (nice branding for what is simply a high res IPS LCD) it managed to hold it's head high.
When switching on the Desire HD after coming from a Nexus, the feeling compares to taking off your shades after a long day in the sun. The colours are not quite the same, the brightness has shifted and you find yourself blinking rapidly as your eyes slowly adjust to what is a different experience. Now to say this is a sub par experience is completely unfounded. Yes some people will instantly wonder whether their phone is functioning correctly, or take a swift trip down to the Opticians questioning their vision. They will finally end up cursing the lack of AMOLED on Xda-Developers, stating washed out colours and poor viewing angles (those who look at there phone sideways all day).
All I can say in response is that while coming from an AMOLED to the Desire HD is like taking off your shades, there are always those who keep their shades on all day long, even in the dark .
As my eyes adjusted to the screen I started to understand what the term 'over-saturated' actually meant! I wanted to apologise to my Iris, Cornea and Retina all at one time. The colours aren't washed out, it's just my eyes were over washed with a false spectrum for so long. The main benefits for this are seen when browsing the web and looking at images, they look REAL. I actually feel as if i'm seeing something in front of me and not looking at a phone screen. The only sadness I feel is when watching videos, it just doesn't look as VIVID, not to say it doesn't look good, but I guess those juicy blacks will definitely be missed.
Another thing is slowly dawning on me, PenTile displays are horrendous. I was duly concerned that having the same resolution on a 35% larger screen would mean the subsequent pixellation would have me screaming for Cupertino's Retina Display to come and save me (sickening thought). Strangely enough it actually feels as though the resoultion is higher. I remembered reading about the Nexus One screen here and feeling it was unfair attack (BTW anyone on here that doesn't read ArsTechnica, bookmark it now). The premise was that the subpixel arrangement on AMOLED screens (Even the SGS has this) meant the effective resolution was less than the 480x800 claimed and more like 392x653, something I now accept to be correct. Comparing the screens side by side it becomes all the more apparent that the resolution cannot be the same, as some images appear sharper on the larger screen which doesn't make logical sense. It is safe to say that for once I agree with Apple and their decision to keep away from AMOLED when many fanboys were demanding it after the 3GS.
Finally, the superior colour depth of the screen has slowly come to the fore. I've read conflicting reports of Nexus creen having 16m vs 65k colours and of being 16bit (Link). I can refer back to one of my earlier statements about technical branding vs reality. Whatever the specs of the Nexus One/Desire screen it falls flat on colour depth compared to the Desire HD. Backgrounds which previously suffered from banding are now brilliant and even the XDA app startup splash, which had serious banding issues on the Nexus now displays colours which weren't even visible before.
Overall, once over the adjustment period, the DHD screen trumps that of the Nexus or Desire and is simply stunning. The size alone renders many of the arguments pointless. I hold my Nexus now and have the same feeling as when I first held the X10 Mini, I feel as though my phone could eat it for breakfast the cute little thing it is. Don't fear the negative comments on here, see it for yourself and if you don't like it, you don't like it.
I certainly do.
Regards.
Some final thoughts....
Did somebody say fully multitouch??
TFT LCD vs S-LCD?? Just in case this is a TFT
HD2 (TFT LCD) Review Endgadget - In terms of colour and contrast, the HD2's screen is a champion. Images and video looked saturated but not drenched, and blacks seemed superbly deep to us.
HD2 (TFT LCD) Review Gizmodo - The 4.3-inch glass display is pure bliss
Comparison Image, Sorry for the poor quality!
very nice analysis of the screens lynx! Im looking forward to your full review! btw i really love the setup you have on your phone in that pic. Stock android looking with HTC's nice clock widget..
Thanks, it's Launcher Pro set up like the stock launcher with the original Fancy Widget. Add the 'Faux Sense' widgets and animations then you're good to go. Regarding the comparison picture, it may seem like the Nexus has more colour but it is simply the unnatural colours that make it seem that way. The DHD image is so real you feel you could pick up a pebble!

I totally agree.
All these comparisons about viewing angles, Touch response when doing swipes in slow-motion is so damn silly.
Way in the world would you like to be able to look at it from an extreme angles anyway?
Use the phone! I say it again: USE the phone!
If you like it keep it, otherwise sell it.
I get the impression that many people here are buying a phone just to impress their neighbour with the best spec-sheet. And then they get "sad like children loosing their favourite toy" when they can't. So damn silly!

[Q] Dell AMOLED vs HTC HD7 LCD?

Everyone has been raving on the DVP's screen, but having had the HD7 while waiting for my DVP to arrive, I've gotta say - I have mixed emotions!
While the colors are substantially better side by side...anyone notice how pixelated the DVP's screen is on text and such? The battery indicator is a good example of what I'm talking about...
I think I might actually prefer the LCD of the HD7 better, despite the lesser black level and color saturation.
Anyone else have any thoughts?
I see what you are talking about... I didn't realize this before you mentioned.
AMOLED in VP is a little bit too much saturated and the HD7 is a wee bit too washed up
A middle ground would have been awesome.
Maybe SLCD or SAMOELD hits that middle ground. My friend is getting the Captivate, will compare this side by side and let you know.
I have a slight blue tint on my whites at certain angles. I dont see a big difference in the two screens, but i expected more from the AMOLED.

I think that was my big let-down. I had (probably overinflated) high expectations of the AMOLED. I didn't see much on the net talking about it, and in fact, most reviews talk about the sharpness of the display, so I was confused if it was just my unit?
I *WAS* able to find a couple of sites that talk about AMOLED having sub-pixels vs a standard LCD/SLCD, and therefore it's not as good for small text or sharpness...
I must say, though, I love the keyboard, and I'm still going to keep the DVP over the HD7 - just a little surprised at the lack of impact from the screen, considering what they've done to build this device (gorilla glass, etc).
I agree with you on the fact that the AMOLED on the dvp has noticeable pixels more than the HD2 that I have. What’s even more sad is that they have the same resolution yet HD2 has a larger screen – Thus I should see more pixels from the HD2, however, this is the opposite.
Why does the DVP have noticeable pixels? Can anyone compare this with the Nexus One and see if they are the same?
Pen-tile matrix effect, probably what you are seeing here. However I cant see what scenario would occur to make me prefer the washed out screen of the HD7, just too darn low quality for me.
Its the nature of the AMOLED screens, my Focus had the same thing. However, overall, I find the screen on the DVP far, far superior to the HD7.
it was my understanding this is more a fault with windows phone 7 as it does not use 16m colours like the display can do.
Personally owning both.. the DVP has a MUCH better screen. Especailly if you change brightness to high.
ive never see an amoled screen before, but coming from the HD2, i was very disappointed.
i guess the hype of amoled screens made me have high expectations which were too high by the time i saw a real amoled screen.
Now that I have a DVP in hand all I can say is the difference is clear, the Dell's AMOLED screen is superior. Maybe some are being swayed by the size but for someone who has had an HD2 for almost 9 months the size is not really a factor and the lack of colour, dim lifeless screen is just no competition for the AMOLED on the Dell.
HD7 Advantages
+Noticeable advantage in color accuracy
+Larger screen offers better spacing on keyboard (portrait)
+Good black levels while inside optimum viewing angles
+/-Brightness is more than adequate (auto brightness is a little conservative though)
+/-Decent viewing angles (No issues during regular use)
HD7 disadvantages
-/+Decent viewing angles (Poor viewing angles make kickstand less useful)
-Slightly less responsive (my opinion)
-Lacks sharpness while viewing pictures (not sure why but they aren't as sharp as the rest of the time with the HD7)
-Color saturation could be better
Venue Pro Advantages
+Excellent contrast with fantastic black levels
+Slightly more responsive touchscreen (my opinion)
+Good brightness
+Excellent color saturation (somewhat oversaturated though)
+Perfect size (my opinion)
+/-Sharpness (pixels aren't noticeable during normal use)
Venue Pro Disadvantages
-/+Sharpness (some users may notice more pixelation)
-Very high color temperature (extremely unusual coming from a calibrated display)
-Can't use the brightness to your advantage without battery drain
-Keyboard felt a little cramped coming from the HD7
I miss the color accuracy of the HD7 but love the size and responsiveness of the Venue Pro. The HD7 gets a bad reputation because of viewing angles but during normal use this is a non-issue and possible advantage with curious onlookers (there will be plenty). It offers better black levels and shadow detail than the iphone 4 but gets hammered for viewing angles. The Venue Pro offers fantastic build quality, an almost perfect size (my opinion) and a more responsive touchscreen (my opinion). It has a very high color temperature but offers superb black levels and color saturation. It is also sleeker than I had anticipated from all the comments saying that it is a beast.
Sorry for the double post
Samsung has bastardized AMOLED with pentile imo. It prolongs display life but the tradeoff in picture quality is too great. There are AMOLED's with normal subpixels, and they look fantastic (Cowon S9, Zune HD, etc).

That's a great point - the ZuneHD I have looks amazing! Still loving my phone, though...
Zoom Sharpness?
I purchased the DVP to have something that will show my pictures a little more accurately than the LCD I have on my HD2 (the slightly extra saturation is better than the washed out look on the HD2) but I now find that there is no sharpness to the images when zooming in.
I have a photo of the lights of Chicago at night and when at the full screen zoom level, it looks ok but zoom in and it is a blurry mess. My HD2 is very sharp when zoomed.
In the Zune software I have tried full size pictures compressed by Zune, pre-compressed images with Zune left on "Original" with no compression and nothing seems to make the images better when zoomed.
Anyone else seeing this problem? This could be a deal breaker for me as far as AMOLED screens go unless it is a WP7 problem. I would love to see how my images look on a Droid device with AMOLED.

I agree with you. Images seem way too pixilated. I mean, I can actually see them which is so sad when I compare it to the HD2. When I am going to do is wait for WP7 to be release on the HD2 by Cotulla and then compare if it the OS or specifically the DVP.
Has anyone seen another amoled screen before in real life? This is my first time I’ve seen an amoled screen. I am not impressed…. At all. Lol but the colors are lovely. Image quality drops, while color saturation grains points
If you read the Cnet phone screen shootout you will see that the HD7 has some pixelation on images of text when zoomed. I have also seen some softness and pixelation on my wifes HD7 when zoomed in. This only really seems to be when viewing images so I would guess it is OS related and not specific to the Venue Pro.
I own a Nexus S and DVP and the dell is getting returned today. Main reason is android is a better fit for me but close second is NS screen is head and shoulders better. No pixelation like I had on dvp.
I think I had a lemon too my dvp was freezing quite a bit.

I find this odd. I had a Focus and an Epic 4G - both have the same screen as the Nexus S - and they had the same pixelation issue as the DVP. It has to do with the AMOLED screen.

How good the HD2 is - comparison

I flashed WP7 on my HD2 and set it to match my Focus them and layout. I always knew my HD2's display was good but now I have proof of how good. To me it matches the color richness of SAMOLED but doesn't have the ugly pentile look. It certainly looks better than the HD7 I had.
The focus seems a bit clearer, but something I've noticed with every amoled and super amoled panel is there is always a blue tint to it.

Yeah...in the picture it does look slightly clearer. I don't know why because I took two shots and that one was the better of the two and in person the HD2 screen is just perfectly clear. But the color production is what stuns me. To me it looks identical...except for maybe the black depth.
I have noticed the blue'ish tint you are talking about on my Focus and have commented that my iPhone 4's display is better than SAMOLED for color accuracy, viewing angle and quality. At the extreme viewing angle is where I see the blue'ish tint mostly and it is absent on the iPhone 4 display. Yet the iPhone 4 display has just as sharp a viewing angle. So it puts it above SAMOLED.
I had an HD7 when they first came out on T-Mobile and thought it was the stuff. Since flashing WP7 on my HD2, I am so amazed at the picture quality my HD2 puts out that I would much rather have the HD2 display in my HD7. I just got done with a little Angry Birds play ...the first time on my HD2 with WP7...and the colors and vividness of it just floors me. I've played Angry Birds on it a lot with Android. But WP7 Mango must be handling the display better because it just purely looks gorgeous.
I decided to take a look at the light theme and low and behold, it looks better on the HD2.

LG G6 screen vs amoled: are you happy? I'm disappointed...

Hi everyone...
my operator just offered a limited-time rebate, that lowers G6 cost to just 310 EUR, so i decided to seriously consider it as my Note 4 is on its last legs with its snail-speed EMMC memory which is also a time bomb as it can fail at any moment.
LG G6 is one of the few phones (apart from the Sharp Aquos or Xiaomi Mi Mix) that i actually like...
so i went to a huge department store to test it in real life... and was very disappointed, as the screen looks dull, and text clarity is mediocre. Websites like Android Authority (with gray text) look mediocre too.. Also the store (mediamarkt) was very well lit with lamps, and raising the brightness to max level only made the brightness good enough... well, comparing the LG G6 screen with my note 4 side by side was upsetting, it looked somewhat grayish, and would be clearly a downgrade. The key thing is that it is not crisp.
In the same store were also samsung and huawei demo zones. I understand that LG G6 and Huawei phones have IPS screens... The phone (screen) that I liked very much turned out to be Huawei Mate 9. Huawei P10 was also nice, but Mate 9 screen was the best imho. Unfortunately i recommended a huawei phone to muy friend (it was Huawei Note 8) and now he has tremendous communication delays, whatsapps get delivered sometimes hours later (here users complain about the same problem), so Huawei unfortunately is not an option for me. I was really hoping LG G6 would do, especially at a very decent price of 310 EUR.
I thought maybe it was a defective unit... so i went to another department store nearby that was less lit and also had LG G6 demo zone. It actually had several G6s and they all had that mediocre screens...
Finally i'm afraid i will have to skip that 310 EUR offer which is a pity, i'd love to have a more snappy phone... And in general G6 is very compact and nice...
Wondering what are your impressions from LG G6 screen? I've looked though these forums and see that most people rave about it, which is astonishing. Am i too critical?
I have the (Korean?) H870DS 64GB, Quad DAC version and I am extremely happy with the screen. AMOLED screens may have vibrant colours and black-black, but the colours just don't look natural.
LG G6 has one of the best screens out there, it's got HDR10 display certified too that it almost matches the very best displays like the Galaxy S8, where as IPS Quantum Display in the LG is better than AMOLED is the oranges you see on the AMOLED appear very red , AMOLED are being notorious for over-saturation and longer image retention (screen burn in might be permanent in AMOLED where as IPS the burn in is temporary) LG IPS Quantum Display has excellent whites and more natural colours.
If you are used to seeing life through an over-saturated screen then accurate RGB will seem subdued.
However go into settings on your Note 4 and turn display mode to BASIC and you will see RGB mode on Samsung panels looks very different. Now compare to the G6 ...
Remember Display Mate rate Samsung panels highly based on the 'basic' mode due to colour accuracy and not on Adaptive Display mode they ship with as default.
However if you are fan of the boosted colours then likely only another over saturated AMOLED panel will appease and therefore the G6 isn't for you.

I am happy with the change i have come from an s8 with the screen i have had all the s range all the note range bar the 5 as was not out in the uk and there is not really that much difference part from blacks look really black on samsung phones my whites look white on my g6 unlike my s8 they looked pink/ red if you are not picking you will find faults and the lg ui is more fluid and faster than my s8 not had one bit of stutter or lag on my g6 but had fair bot on s8
No complaints about the G6 screen. This was my first LCD phone is many years (previously S6, S4, S3, and Note 2; plus Galaxy Tab S), so was worried about switching to the G6's LCD. I see the differences when I compare side-by-side, but I don't notice the difference when I use the G6 by itself.
The Huawei you saw at the store might be set to demo/display mode (like TVs) that maximizes brightness and color to levels you probably wouldn't use.
Yes it does have the hdr 10 thing but there is other phones having it but what the lg g6 is the only phone certifed for , is the dolby vision nd it s the only phone till now it does take the hdr thing to another level
No complaints with the screen here, seems just as crisp as my Galaxy S6, with the added benefit of no screen burn. Very happy.

It's more of a personal choice. I find benefits in both superAmoled, and IPS panels. For me, Amoled is better for long time reading, mostly because of true blacks and less backlight emitition (as I use with my tab s3) while for more realistic colors and specially true white, I prefer my G6. It has probably the best IPS panel I've seen by far.
Unrelated, but somehow related to screen experience, my s7 was a fingerprint magnet. G6 oleophobic coating seems to be much better! (At least after a few weeks)

As with most tv content HDR is useless and really really useless during the daytime. This coming from a guy who invested $5k last year on 4k tv and playable equipment. From xbox 1 S. Amazing OLED LG 65" and samsung hdr 4k player
Does anyone use this? It's kinda cool I use it to get a better contrast ratio. Since we don't get screen modes like Samsung does. Been doing it since my g3
Sad ? First of all you should know the difference between amoled and LCD .
An amoled while delivers punchy vibrant colors is actually unreal or artificial colors.
LCD is not punchy but produce Real life colors almost.
Red is red and blue is blue .
Gotta doubt ? Try taking pics of some fruits mixed together and compare them in 2k amoled and 2k LCD.
And for original clarity of display the display brightness should be around 50%.

I have the oneplus 3t and purchased a G6 from eglobal. Excellent service and price. I must say I was also disappointed with the G6 screen the whites are so cool they look blue. I tried changing the colour temperature in the visual settings but couldn't find any srgb mode like I have on the 3t. Brightness is also not great. I sold it on as for me the lcd was just not very nice to look at which is a shame tbh. Hoping the v30 will use a better screen.
Coming from S7 Edge, I must say the LG G6 screen is quite poor ( I still have the S7E). People here bragging about it being an LCD display, true color renditions, and HDR, doesn't know enough to judge the displays. Well, I have a Mi 5 and also compared the iPhone 7 display to the LG 6 ( Both Mi 5 and iPhone 7 has LCD displays) and unfortunately, g6's display was not impressive at all. Not deep enough blacks ( Again comparing only to other LCD's and not to an AMOLED screen), not bright enough(Even indoors, I keep it around 60 plus percent for a satisfactory brightness), not sharp enough ( The text looks pale and not so sharp) and the viewing angles are terrible. I am of course not in any way expecting the G6 to compete with the Samsung AMOLED displays, but G6 being 2017 flagship from LG, should be good enough to compete with at least the Xiaomi Mi 5 if not an iPhone 7.
I bought it for a few reasons,
1) Design and look ( Looks pretty sleek and neat)
2) Got it for a really cheap deal
3) Love the wide angle camera
I had a really tough time maintaining my S7E. It does not have a proper tempered glass due to its edge display and that's the main reason I wanted to switch to another phone so that I can avoid the head ache of changing the tempered glass every month and also my S7E display cracked even with a tempered glass on ( Though it's pretty usable and used it in that same condition for about 6 months). So thought it's not worth getting the display replaced as it seems too fragile and I did not find any other phone to switch to(Not a fan of iPhones), so have temporarily switched to the G6. I think I will switch to Pixel 2 as soon as its launched ( Hate the present pixel for those ugly big chins)
So yeah the G6 display is a very mediocre and definitely not something you should buy the phone for.

Well this is a stupid assumption because me for example, reviews Monitors for Companies like Yamakasi, Catleap, Samsung, Dell. I had around 15 different Monitors in the last four years (21:9,4K,WQHD,IPS,TN,244 Hz,3D,PLS,G-Sync,Freesync, pretty much everything). And i can tell you from a standpoint where facts matter, the Amoled Smartphone displays are total crap. Amoled has nicer blacks because it doesn't require to power black pixels, in other words, black means off. But the over saturation is completely unrealistic and extremely annoying when taking pictures on your Smartphone and then transfering them to your PC suddenly noticing the Image is way less colorfull and saturated on a Eizo calibrated Eizo Foris. This is nuts. And if you find IPS Panels White color too cool, then you must know that Witebalance is increased with brightness. Whites may look whiter, but if you over expose greys become white too, thats why IPS displays look a bit cooler, because otherwise you would have a solid block of white instead of a nice dynamic range.
Im coming from a Galaxy Note 4 and, guys. This Display is so much better for people who actually want realistic colors and know how to use the camera properly. (eg. Tech Guys). I know many people want extreme Bass on their Headphones or over saturated displays, but it doesn't change the fact that you are loosing details or faking the output. Its simply unpleasant to the eye to have such a big amount of saturation where in reality everything looks much more natural. This stuff was cool when i was 14. Nowadays i want to reproduce everything 1:1, no matter if its Sound Quality or Display color. Professionals are much better off with the G6.

Serious the display is not good. The whites are so blue. Lets not turn this into amoled vs lcd because we all know LG, Apple/Sharp will be using Amoled in the future not lcd.
Just pick up an iPhone and compare the G6 screen and that will show how poor it is. Just hope v30 will be better.
I'm disappointed in Samsung crappy Amoled panels. My first S8+ had severly brighter upper half than bottom when viewing dark content. My second unit has white balance shift on the bottom part. Red left side green right side. I can never ever get a good Samsung panel. With the S7+ I switched phones 4 times and never got a good screen. Also Amoled whites suck it's not white like LCD. I ****ing give up on Sammy phones forever now I enjoy my G6 LCD so much more it has punch to its white and not these quality issues Samsung always has had.

Did you even read my complete post? My god, how you just want to jump all over and prove me wrong. Please read my complete post if you haven't already. I clearly said i am not comparing the G6's display to the AMOLED ones and i am a professional photographer myself and i know what it means to have a display that can render true colors. But i clearly mentioned that, when i compared this display with the Mi 5, iPhone7 and I even compared it to the Mi 6 today which all have LCD displays and not AMOLED, and unfortunately, they all render better colors ( Of course true colors), they look sharper ( In fact all those phones i mentioned doesnt even have a QHD display, they are all full HD) and over all more impressive. I am not here to win an argument, i am simply stating the facts. being a G6 owner my self, i have no reasons to prove anything against it, unless it is really true.
It really strikes me how display quality perception differs among individuals.
I'm in the process of choosing my next smartphone and, being picky on display quality, I read a lot of posts and reviews putting attention to the display topic.
Well, someone says LG G6 is an excellent display, with good luminosity, well calibrated colors and deep blacks (second only to HTC U Ultra, which looks to have one of the best LCD displays to date).
Someone else, the minority in my reading actually, are not happy and say that blacks quickly turn to grays even at little angles.
Obviously I'm puzzled, and now my only hope is that a store near me will receive a G6 soon, so I'll be able to check it out first hand.
Oneplus 3t in maximum brightness and lg g6 in maximum brightness which is brighter and better to read in the sun? I miss my oneplus two because it was mich better to read
