Worst AT&T Tech chat ever, but revealed some strange things going on with 1.83 - Atrix 4G General

EDIT 2: It appears to be up OTA so connect to wifi and check for an update!
Edit for those who just came here to figure out what was going on with 1.83:
It would appear that some sort of error occurred in which the beta of 1.83 was released OTA to a few people and to even more through the computer connect update software. This is why people were reporting that they had had success downloading the new update. However it was not available for everyone and appears to have been pulled completely. Things were made more confusing because AT&T and Motorola both appeared to make some false claims that the new update was beginning its release on April 29th. However this was a mistake and they later retracted their claims either by deleting the comment altogether or saying that they meant that the beta would be released to limited amounts of people at that time. This appears to be the cause of all of the confusion, but the bottom line is that the official update is NOT out yet, and if you want the 1.83 beta that others have gotten, check around, it isn't too hard to find!
Original post:
So I came across an AT&T answers page actually listing 4.1.83 on the site which said it was available and all I had to do was connect to wifi and check for updates to get it.
So I think "SWEET!" and try it, but still no luck
By this time I figure alright if AT&T is listing this but it's not up may as well go ahead and bother their tech support for a while and see if I get any answers
They take a LONG time to answer my question and eventually tell me that there is no 1.83 update. To which I reply "Excuse me, BS, here is exactly what YOUR site says" -copy, paste, and post link to it-
They take a long time, then completely ignore it and tell me to access my phones settings and tell them what software version I am running.
Meanwhile I get a little suspicious about whats going on and open a new window and follow the link I sent them.
It had been edited WHILE I was talking to them! The 1.83 part had been completely taken out. All that was left was the 1.57 update. The tech support person continued to play dumb and tell me there was only a 1.57 update and that I could contact motorola if I had any more issues.
I'll post a screenshot of what the site said when I accessed it this morning. I don't know if the info on that page is old news to these forums or when it even went up, but At&T certainly has their heads up their asses.

Oops, forgot about that mention. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

Did you tell them there are even websites with benchmarks out there like
Anandtech?

Very weird....its because they are getting ready for gingerbread. Oh wait, nevermind, just wishful thinking.

I talked with them a bit more after posting.
I told them that this was not a Motorola issue, and that I now wanted to know what had happened with the AT&T site and that I saw that it had been edited. They continued to post more Motorola contact info and asked if they could help me in any other way.
I told them that they could start by actually reading what I was typing to them, and repeated that the page had been edited. I am subjected to more waiting until finally the associate tells me they "didn't see" the second update before, but now they know what I am talking about. The page is still edited so I have no idea how they saw it right then... but yeah.
They then ask me to connect to wifi and try to perform the update. Told them I already did. They then say, that maybe AT&T recalled the update and tell me to wait. I wait. Then they come back asking if I have contacted motorola, I tell them no. They then link me to a post in motorolas forums and tell me to check there.
The thread I am linked to is merely people complaining about the same page on AT&T that I was referring to in the first place... with no answer on it as to what was going on, when I point this out the associate remains silent. I continue to do other things on my computer checking back every few minutes. After 10 minutes of silence I go ahead and tell them that I could see that they were not even going to try to help me and closed out the conversation.
Disappointing, though I am now reasonably certain that I am the reason the page got edited haha

OTA
So do we know if anybody has gotten the update OTA or has it all been "self-help" installation. AT&T changing their website makes it appear delays to OTA update. Question remains, is it becuase of AT&T or Motorola?

That's classic, I wonder what they would say if I walked into a store and asked about the 1.83 update, especially since I have it on my phone already so I can prove it exists.

My guess would be att, since Motorola had it officially on one of their websites for a USB link update

If you check the motorola owners forums, they say the update hasnt officially been publicly released although, many ppl besides beta testers were able to snag the update before it seemed to have been pulled. You can always download the 1.83 SBF thats floating around and flash to it.

Nothing new here. AT&T sticking thier heads and the sand and ignoring the customer. Can not/will not even respond to direct legitimate questions. Maybe it is time to try to get their attention another way. here is the link where you can post comments to the FCC concerning their attempt to monopolize. http://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/ecfs/
I think everybody that has an issue with at&t's customer support, rate plans, crippling devices, false advertising, etc., that have tried to get answers or support with no satisfaction should make these issues known. If the congressional reps on the committees start asking the same questions we have, then maybe, just maybe, att will understand we are customers, and not just a source of income. Maybe I should start a thread just for this so we get as many people as possible to send their thoughts along.

I've been running 1.83 since the 29th and I'm not a beta tester. I actually got it by downloading the Motorola software Updater from here http://direct.motorola.com/hellomoto/motosupport/source/SoftwareUpdateSummary.asp?country=USA&language=ENS&web_page_name=SUPPORT&strCarrierId=ATT&strPhone=Motorola%20ATRIX(TM)%204G&strCable=Micro%20USB%20Data%20Cable&strURL=https://rsddownload.motorola.com/download/SoftwareUpdateforATTATRIX4Gversion.4.1.57.pdf.
All I did was plug my phone in and it looked for an update for like 5 minutes then said there was one available and asked if I wanted to install it (Of course yes) 15 min later it was done. I actually flashed back to 1.26 3 times and updated to 1.83 like this because I messed up root (Come to find I just needed gingerbreak). Some people can't get it so I'm not sure if they took it down from moto or what the deal was. Everything on the page says 1.57 but it still let me update to 1.83 multiple times so I donno.

I'm pretty sure it was the morning of the 29th.

It was working, but has since been pulled. I saw both the AT&T page as well as the Moto update. Neither are working now.

Ima stop by the store and inquire about it there, see how interesting that conversation is as soon as I'm done at the gym since there's an official att store right next door, talk about convenient.

Same here...I got the update from the moto site on the morning of the 29th.

Well, that turned out to be as pointless as I expected it to be, no one had any clue what I was talking about or why the update would be there one minute then all traces be gone the next. Their only suggestion was maybe there was a bug in it.

Maybe there going to update to unlock unknown apps so u can install Amazon app n other programs.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App

From what i've read, i'm guessing the 1.83 update is still in beta testing, but for some reason someone in ATT's dev team messed up and relayed it as "release" to another ATT team and motorola, who put it up on their websites as available for download without further questioning. If anyone got it through OTA, they might have been part of the first wave before someone in ATT realized the mistake and pulled the update out.
Then ATT decided to go for a "what update?" policy instead of "whoops."

Leak status

Since the 2.1 Leak thread is no longer sticky.....
Can we get a sticky 'status thread' for those of us stuck with the 2.1 leak so we know what is, if anything, going on or whether the devs have abandoned us?
I'd much prefer not to go haggle with the verizon wireless store, but I will if I have to. As it stands, the lack of information on this topic leaves me not sure what to do. A little input is all I ask.
I agree. Some sort of status would be nice.
there wont be any updates on the status. it will be a new thread that will all of a sudden come out and say "we have root / downgrade / whatever for those on 2.1 leak" instead of a posting in an existing thread.
so let me repeat that THERE IS NO ROOT FOR 2.1 LEAK YET.
any updates will be posted in a new thread!
you will find out when it has happened....it will be one the of the top threads.
I appreciate the response.
Can you at least tell me if someone is in fact working on it or is it just something that a dev 'may' stumble on at some point?
2.1 leak
I was just on the IRC chat yesterday and they were working on this very thing. Finding a rooted ROM was a little serendipitous and that may leave some of the 2.1 leakers feeling a little left out. Though I do not speak for any of the devs I do know that they plan on addressing this issue espcially because 2.1 official update will be out...eventually. This means that their current method of obtaining root would be obsolete. If you have another method of downgrading your phone then I would suggest using it if you are impatient like me.
So you should learn to do this thing called search.... there was a post about this very subject a day or two ago.
We, the devs, are currently working on some methods for downgrading 2.1 leaked to either 1.5 or the rooted 2.1.
We don't want a new thread about it because we are at this point just poking and prodding around on the phones hoping to find something. Most ideas we have are tried within an hour and don't work, so no need to constantly post about them.
Just please rest assured that on the irc server we are working hard to get 2.1 leak rooted or downgraded. Right now there are still a couple of us devs with the 2.1 leak so it is in our interest to get this thing worked out.
I didn't particularly want a new thread about this to keep track of either. That's why a stickied thread, maybe even locked until someone has an update, was a good idea I thought. One place, top of the list, that all us 2.1 leak users can subscribe too and know when progress is made.
What was so wrong about wanting that instead of watching the board every day, waiting for news, skimming all the titles, or searching each week to see if anything has change?
Gotta agree..
Even if it's just a place to vent, I think us early adopters of the leak deserve a place to huddle up and wonder out loud whether anyone is working on the issue or if we're just stuck..
Nobody has claimed yet to have been force at gunpoint to upgrade. We're here by our own volition..
I will agree with jcase from another thread that we can't whine much unless we're willing to help out, though.. irc.wastate.net was it?
Personally, I don't think its very beneficial for anyone to have a thread where its nothing but "ranting". There are better things to spend time looking at and/or talking about.
Rest assured that when/if a way to downgrade arises, you'll know within hours just like the root, just like the leak.
Not sure why this hasn't been done yet but I just politely explained to Verizon that my phone was pushed with the 2.1 update and that it breaks Facebook contact sync and kills the battery life and I'd to downgrade, wait for them to call HTC and say that's not possible and ask for an exchange. Done.
That actually works?

HTC support response to installing 3.26.651.3!!

From HTC support-
On Friday, Engadget posted an article telling users how to download and install an unofficial version of software that was found on one of our R&D servers. We pulled server offline within an hour or so of finding out about the issue, with the wrong software (anything other than 1.47.x.x) FOTA updates won’t work for you. Most likely you are on version 3.26.651.3, which is the version that got leaked. If you do have this software , Sprint has requested that we send you to a Sprint service center. There they will be rolled back to software 1.47.x.x. and FOTA will work from there. With the software versions other than 1.47.x.x to go to a Sprint Service Center. The Service Center has special tools that will allow them to help you.
Tools?!?
I have been to 2 Sprint service centers; 1 didn't know what I was talking about and the other attempted to rollback but it failed...as expected right??
I have contacted HTC about this and have yet to hear anything back...
Has anyone heard something similar?
Edit: misread...sorry

I wonder what there response will be.
So they can role it back but we can't. has to be a way. even if we did a full install of 1.47. I am sure someone around here can find a way to help us. I hate dealing with my sprint store.
Just took mine in. Guy said he received an email from HTC the other day and it would take about an hour to roll it back. Ill ask him what he used when i pick it up. That is if it worked!
I am going to head to a sprint store later today to do this, and find out if root will work afterwards.
Also can we get a link to this post?
I bet a lot of people here would be interested in the method they are using to "roll back".

I also bet there is a Sprint Store employee on XDA that could shed some light on this.
I was at a sprint service center yesterday and they just ordered me a new evo which will be in in a few days. Never mentioned they could roll back the software. In fact he didn't even say anything to me about having superuser on my phone. With me being an android newbie I didn't know ihad to remove it before applying the ota update so now its stuck on it since I can't root now.

I hope they are right since I have no issues with my phone and would hate to replace it over something "simple"...
GTK
Called Sprint who referred me to a service center who had no idea what I'm talking about. Maybe the only way out of this is to root and load a froyo ROM?
I don't get it - what did the leaked update break that can't be fixed by updating to the root-safe OTA release?
I agree, I'd wait for an XDA developer Sprint won't know nothing.

People that were not rooted and updated to the leaked ota can't update to the final build because the ota expects to patch up a 1.47 rom on the phone. Obviously it can't do that if the rom on the phone is not 1.47
Last Updated: Aug 04, 2010
Just like your computer, your phone's software needs to be updated periodically to make sure you have all the latest fixes and enhancements to keep it running at optimal performance. Follow the steps below to check your current version and perform any needed updates.
Version History
Current Version: 3.26.651.3
from the sprint website so i doubt they can update to.6
I am sure HTC will post something on their twitter account. They have already stated they are working on a fix. I think the OP was told to take it to a repair center because they may still be working on a software fix or OTA fix for this.

Nothing at all about dk28
no more GPS?
I don't see anything at all on my Sprint page about this update or even anything specific to the version of software on my phone.
I installed this update earlier today and the GPS on my phone no longer works. It worked before and I never noticed any problems or delays that others reported. I've tried wiping the data and cache numerous times and even re-installing the upgrade but nothing seems to work.
Does anyone have any other suggestions on what I might try? At this point I question whether or not this is the same update we'll receive OTA...
Thanks,
Scott

So you think Sprint's plan is to push this update to everyone OTA and then have all the end-users install Odin and fix it? Even while denying that there is such a release? Hilarious!
This is not an official rollout. It is a leak. Those who install it, and are comfortable with some level of hacking, may proceed at their own risk, as usual.
But no one should believe this is an official release from Sprint.

Um.. That makes no since..
He had to odin BACK to di18 because he installed a leak..
the official is based off the knowledge of the user never hacking the phone and leaving it stock.
Therefore; no the average user will not need to use odin.. infact won't even know about it.
But those who have come to xda WILL need to odin back to stock di18 in order for the official Froyo to work when it is launched.

Suppose you got an update OTA. Wouldn't you consider it official?
If you have followed the original thread (which has been closed), the update happened OTA to a non-Sprint person. That is why many people claim it's official.
Why would Samsung release DK28 as official Froyo full of bugs when their Eclair builds were flawless? It doesn't make any sense. I sure wish people would stop saying that this is the official release and confusing new people. This is NOT the official release. There is NO evidence for that. Its NOT a finished product at this point.

UGH. How many times does this need to be explained? He had a .4 hardware revision. .4 hardware revisions are for TESTERS. He received the update OTA because SOMEHOW he got ahold of a hardware revision that only TESTERS should have. This has all been discussed a thousand times.
Also, if this WAS the official release it would be a disaster for sprint.

I didn't remove the link. It still works. But the Sprint site is very slow today. If you manage to get through, you will see that the quote above is accurate.

Eclair to Froyo: How often do phones check?

Hey all,
Quick question. Does anyone know how often or how our phones query the server for update checks? Is the software first downloaded before asking us if we want to upgrade? Does the sync icon light up while it is downloading? Does our battery charge need to over x to before the software either downloads and/or notify us?
I'm curious as to how the entire process works.
Thanks.

I have an Evo, but I follow the tech news. Software updates are released in waves so that if there are issues with an update, they are isolated and they can stop sending them out. Essentially, the first wave are the guinea pigs. I'm not sure how they decide who gets them, but I'm pretty sure it's random. You will be notified on your own when you can grab the update. It starts on the 21st and everyone should have the update by the 25th. Of course, you can probably just find the update online once it's out and do it yourself:

When the update is available to your phone, it will download it silently in the background. Once the download is complete, you will get a notification that an update is ready to install. As long as you have enough battery left, you will have the option to install it. Otherwise you will be prompted to plug into your charger.
As far as the frequency your phone checks for updates, I'm not sure other than at boot time.
Sent from an Epic I haven't bricked yet.
Also, I believe the updates are 'pushed', which is to say, Sprint contacts your phone directly not vice versa.
Given how infrequent updates are, having your phone poll for them would be a wasted process.
Our phones already poll for app updates through the market and the update is hosted on googles servers.
I don't think it is too far fetched that our phones are notified somehow through this process?

It would make sense, with the 'wave' method mentioned above, that it's just pushed. Thats the fun! Back when I used to odin to D*27 to let it OTA DI18, it would happen really randomly, anywhere from instant to half an hour... never waited longer though, as its open to request, I just 'check for updates' of it was taking too long. Either way, unless you are one of the first wave, I would wait for XDA's Devs to look over the one from the first wave, and then DL their update... Im sure they will get one from the first wave... I will probly Odin to DI18 tomorrow night and wait, just for fun, as I do agree there is an attraction to that, kind of like when you get a surprise PS3 update that gives you some new unlocked functionality... reminds you why you bought it... course with this phone, we would feel that way if it were more timely, but hey, theres the future...

My phone doesn't poll for market updates, i'm only notified if I actually open market.
Besides, this is from sprint, not from market.

I asked the same question and was told yes.
Sent from my never been rooted, always stock eclair Epic.
I believe that I read somewhere on here that they were updating from oldest version first, over 3 or 4 days.

I'm not so sure, as I remember when receiving the ota for di07 and di18 the download was slow so I turned on WiFi, at which point the dl stopped all together.

I don't believe they would do it that way. A vast majority of users are on the latest while there is probably a minority who didn't update past DI07. They get the latest first and then get the stragglers in the later days.

A software update to EB13 (Froyo) is available for the Samsung Epic 4G via Google OTA. Customers will become eligible for the
upgrade across a 4-day period based on their status with the Google servers. 67% of users are currently on SW DI18 so the first
OTA package we will publish will be an upgrade from DI18 – Froyo (DL11). We will be publishing hop upgrades from DG27 – Froyo
and DI07 – Froyo as soon as possible following the initial release
OTA Duration time is dependent on current device usage: 10 – 25 minutes, with installation time of 6-8 minutes
from the leaked .pdf from the first day, after the screenshots. thanks to whoever leaked it! DI18 is priority, you cant really sit on the older versions, I think those 'hop updates' are for old stock sitting around with the old versions waiting to be activated. Oh and the DL11 is a typo, they just cut and pasted from a previous release most likely...

That happens on any download. Switching connections in the middle of a download stops it. Ive done this before. If you start on 3g, you'll have to finish on 3g, or restart on Wifi/4g

If anyone receives the update, please contact me by personal message AS SOON AS POSSIBLE BEFORE you install the update!
Please please please...thank you

maybe it will be automatically updated with a script when they start the ota's. idk, just a guess.
UPDATE PROCESS: The software update will be delivered as a wireless download (over-the-air, or OTA) in waves starting on February 21. All Samsung Epic 4G owners should have access to the download by the end of the week (Feb. 25).
Once your Epic is in the queue and eligible to download the update, a message will be pushed to your device saying that a software update is available. If you are not yet in the queue and you attempt to check for a software update manually, you will receive a message saying “no upgrade is available”. This simply means your device isn’t in the current wave of updates.
All customers should have access to the update by the end of the week (Feb. 25).
just got this off sprint site.... so phones dont check... pushed, and you cannot even manually trigger it... I even Odin'd to DI18 a bit ago, to see if I could trigger it activating DI18... no dice. OK... whos in wave 1... cough it up!
Whosdaman,
Just curious, can I ask why contact you first? Are you aware of something I haven't read?
I'm rooted and rommed, but watching hubby's unrooted (won't let me touch or mess and screw up his!! Doesn't believe me I can fix whatever I break!!) Epic.
Really do appreciate someone looking out for everyone. I am going to hold on his until I see some positive results, because I can't fix what Sprint breaks!!

Sprint MAY downgrade you to Froyo...if you ask nicely.

Chatted with an online technical "specialist" this morning regarding not getting my visual voicemail, and receiving the (in)famous "9016" text instead. While he was re-provisioning my phone, I decided to ask the tech about the latest GB update, and our ability to downgrade back to Froyo (for rooting purposes of course, but I did not share that little piece of info):
ME: "how can I downgrade my phone back to froyo?" i dont like the gingerbread update, and there seems to be no way to downgrade. since the update, i seem to have nothing but issues with my rom."
Agent: "I am sorry for the inconvenience caused due to Gingerbread updates. That is a known issue and our Technical Support Team is working to fix the issue with the Android. You will not be able to downgrade the update from your end but yes, you can visit any of the Sprint Store. We are well equipped to downgrade the updates from there. Also if you want to use the Gingerbread, we can update that from there successfully without any issues"
Agent: "I have also added a note on the account to assist you with at the store to downgrade the update."
ME: "so i can just go to the store and ask for the froyo downgrade, and they will do it for me?"
Agent: "You are most welcome. My notes are there on your account to assist you with."
AAAAAnyway...I plan on visiting the store this afternoon and will report my findings. I have a feeling they may give me a harder time than this agent lets on. But at least the notes are in my account that I've been having issues. If I can get root back today, I will be a happy camper (need to get my Titanium backups back!)
But do you know if this is going to revert the Hboot back to the previous version? Because the Hboot is what's preventing root on GB

not sure, but with being able to revert back, one would assume so, right? anyway, i called said Sprint store, and was given a different answer: "No, they're giving you wrong information. We cannot downgrade you, sorry."
Perhaps I will try a different Sprint store.
Don't believe anything those chat people say. They are NOT specialists, they are people in India reading off a computer screen, they have NO idea what they are talking about.
regardless, you should post the results...
Looks like I will end up having to visit the store anyway...since my visual voicemail STILL isn't working. Is it just me, or has Sprint's service been sh!t lately? At least here in CT it has been in regards to texts, pic mail, and now voicemail.
BTW, I assume your visual voicemail is not working because you updated handcent recently? There is a under handcent settings/application settings: default messaging client. If this is set to anything other than "disable" it will break your visual voicemail...
Gave up on Hancent months ago...the updates were destroying an otherwise good app. Went with GoSMS, but now you've got me thinking...there may have been an update to it recently.
As far as a store visit goes, I called Sprint instead. In the end, factory reset on my phone fixed the VVM No downgrade for me either, after 10 minutes of pleading my case about how crappy GB is "No sir, we cannot downgrade your phone. And most of these are network-related issues."
OK...well where's the rebate for the service on my bill reflecting your "network issues?"
We only have as many tools as XDA does and we are not able to downgrade an s-on OTA device.
The rep on the phone is gonna tell you whatever they have to for you to get off the call thinking you just got hooked up. I guarantee this will be the first place ANYONE that took the ota will downgrade or see root.

So I looked and GoSMS has a similar setting and I changed it and all is better!

I chatted with the specialist, called Sprint, and then called the repair facility. The rep from the repair facility said that he couldn't downgrade to Froyo atm but that Sprint will start allowing them to soon. He also said that their should be an OTA to unlock the hboot within the next month. I doubt this but that's what he told me :/
Dude hate to bust ur bubble bro.... But I have tried and failed at this. They dont have the ability to do it

I'm with you on that one.
unless the store can desolder the nand and reflash everything this isnt happening, hboot will reject the ruu.... plain and simple, you wont be able to downgrade, wait until 2.16 is unlocked by either teamwin or another dev team, pressure htc to release the source until then
So did you go to the store and get downgraded?
We should start emailing and calling HTC then, Do you think that with the Evo 3D being unlocked it would also help the OG Evo with 2.3 to be unlocked too?
No need to go to the store. I can wait for root again, unlike the many impatient people around here. Just want it back for tethering. Not flashing a new rom everyday has increased my work productivity tenfold
Lmao @ increasing work tenfold....I hear you brother....I hear you...
sent fro my 2.3.3 unrooted piece o ****....
The original post is bs garbage. Y u make up storiez op?
Copy and paste the chat record if you really hve one cuz I've seen mny and they aren't labled "me" and "agent" and definitly no quotations.
