[Q] Nook Color Ghost Touchs (Not the Same Old) - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ok so I have returned 3 nook colors for the whole ghost touch/random selecting of things....Anyways I noticed on CM 7.0.2 currently the best ROM for the Nook Color out there that the lcd density is at 161 in the build.prop file I like things bigger so I set it at 230 or so and I have been messing with diffrent settings. It seems to me that at the LCD Density Setting of 161 or so that the stock CM 7.0.2 comes with does virtually no/minimal ghost/random touch compared to say a setting of 230 or so.I have tryed stock roms n all the rest and it seems they all have the same problems with this matter. I guess my real question is does CM 7.0.2 have a setting of 161 for a reason? And if it does is there a way to fix to this issue and get a better size say of 200+ on the lcd density settings?

I don't have the full story on why 161 but I know part of it is that alot of apps won't render properly with a setting of 160 so to answer the lesser question 161 is intentional.

Ya thats what I was just reading but Im curious about the fact it seems at least to me being though 3 nook colors that the problem is more software related somehow some way rather than hardware if anybody has any thing else that would be cool....thanks! And btw another forum I was reading earlier said something about the software how it members where you touch and if u exchange for a new nook color like I did of course it will be better at the start but eventually will be the same old issue

You may just need to re-calibrate your screen. I haven't had issues with ghost touches other then when trying to use it while connected to a charger.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.assid.android.nookrecalibrate&feature=search_result

Ya Im fairly use to the adb method of recalibrating the screen and also the app on the market that seems to help for a couple of mins. And so does flashing or restoring the rom and the usual screen off/on trick and the reboot I have been round the block with this thing once or twice

Not the same old? So you're using the NC while plugged in? Or a really dirty screen, or wet, or..?

What this man says! The nook color screen is very sensitive, your screen doesn't have to even be very dirty, it can register old fingerprints as touches, any time you get ghost touches, just turn your screen off and clean it...

I noticed there was a calibration APK in the stock 1.2 rom, however it won't install in CM7 and I couldn't find how to run it on the stock rom.

I have been using a density setting of 220 on the NC for weeks (and my DroidX for almost a year) without noticing any ghost touches. I recommend the same as above... if you get ghost touches, turn off the screen and clean any smudges.

most ghost touches i experience are due to thin layer of condensation on screen, usually first thing in morning when the screen is cold but my hands are warm

My original NC had the ghost touch issue, and it was driving me nuts, so I exchanged it for a new one last week. The new one works great. I haven't cleaned the screen at all since getting it a week ago, so it's pretty dirty now, and still no issue with ghost touches. My feeling is that there is a hardware issue with many NCs.

I dont think its a hardware issue at all, every time i've had the ghost touch issue, i was able to fix it by cleaning the screen. It doesn't matter that your screen is just dirty, what matters is what its dirty with, since the screen is capacitive, it would have to be dirty with something conductive...

Well my original one started acting funky after just a day or two, I kinda thought that it was software related because I was running CM7 nightlys at the time, but later realized that the issue persisted even with stock. I did find that I could reduce the issue by cleaning the screen, but it didn't help completely, and would only help for a very short time. Since exchanging for a new nookcolor, the difference is night day. I am completely convinced that it is in fact hardware related, based on my experience with two different units.

As explained by the man himself;
dalingrin said:
You can use 169. Despite what people think, 160 is the best value to use for the Nook. Anything other than 160 means extrapolation or interpolation must take place. This is why nearly every HDPI phone uses 240, not 231 or 248, despite their real world DPI.
However, there is a bug in the Android Market @ 160 on tablet size screens. For now I have it set to 161 to get around that bug. I don't use 169 because icons and such are more blurry due to the extra extrapolation needed.
Until Google fixes the market there isn't a good DPI for us to use. Each has its own problems, 161 has a line in the notification bar but sharp icons, 169 doesn't have a line in the notification bar but has blurry icons....etc

Regarding ghost touch issues, while there may be some units that have this problem due to hardware, IMHO most of them are due to the sensitive screen and dust/dirt/oil/condensation. Just the other day I was plagued with ghost touches because it was unusually humid in the room I was in. As has been posted by many, easily fixed with a simple good clean.

Had my nook for over a month now, and just noticed this problem this weekend. I had to clean the screen real well (didn't even look that dirty) and the problem went away. FWIW I have a screen protector on it (added it a couple weeks ago).

I have never seen any ghosting issues. Im running cm7 with a default density of 161 i got my nook at the beginning of the year. ive pretty much run every version of cm7 since it was released.
I had it a month or 2 before i got a screen protector. (official b&n, antiglare)
I did have to clean my screen really well prior to applying the protector. i dont think ive cleaned it since.

I have a Zagg InvisiShield, installed a few days after I got my Nook back in March, no ghost touch issues that I have noticed.

The ghost touches have 'nothing' to do with hardware, roms or applications used. Its entirely due to something on your screen such as grease, oil or something similar like the previous posters said. When or if it happens, turn off and clean your screen. That's it. All tablets can produce weird touching behaviour 'especially ' if you use something like a screen protector.

I beg to differ, ONE poster said something about it happening more when they have it plugged in.. I have playing a game that drains it pretty quickly, so if I can play on the charger I do.. but the problem is constant, even when my screen is PERFECTLY clean. The problem has all but went away entirely when I leave it unplugged, even with screen dirtyness. And came back within a few minutes of it being plugged in AND fully charged. I think it happened once WHILE it was charging, but THAT may have been because I let the screen be dirty while charging.
So yea, I have a feeling that there IS some hardware reason for this. Or even just as possible, something in the way the software reacts once it is fully charged. Either way, I have tested this for weeks and it has held absolutely true.
So thanks to the poster that mentioned it being plugged in, fixed my problem entirely

There is a hardware issue causing this but I think it is the cable/charger that is the problem. My Nook charger causes this issue but if I use a standard usb cable to charge I don't have touch screen problems. Some users have gotten replacement cables and no longer have the issue.

(SOLVED) Serious screen problem, please help!

Looks like it was my generic charger causing all the problems all along...
Too high output (6.5VDC where it should be 5VDC)

Thanks for all the help!
Sometimes my touchscreen is just perfect. Lately, it's driving me nuts!
When I hold my finger on the screen, the touch screen registers rapid multiple touches. Possibly as many as 10 per second.
This makes dragging and long-press actions almost impossible. Scrolling is very hard and typing is a PitA.
The problem goes away at times but keeps returning. I'm not sure if I had it before the recent update.
At first, it seemed like rebooting helped but today it proved useless.
Anybody, please help!!!!

Do you have a screen protector on the screen? Sometimes the cheaper ones are too thick and the screen doesn't register touch like it should.

Just the one that came on the phone.
Like I said, the phone works beautifully some of the time but registers multiple contacts other times.
I suspect software but it seems I'm the only person with the problem...
do you have a warranty.... sounds like a hardware fault to me.... the only way you can prove it's software (or not).. is to do a factory data reset and then run it with the standard basic build for a few days.. see if you still have problems when you don't have any other apps on the phone.
Do you have wet fingers when you experiment this behaviors?
Happens to me too. I figure its due to gunk on the screen like water, sweat your gf's makeup (a major one)

This happens to me too.
Only started happening since the last update so I just assumed it was a bug in the new firmware. It's like the phone lags and then catches up with itself, very annoying.

I think it is since the update. I'd better reset the phone using SEUS and see what happens.
@ everybody, believe me, I have had the problem through a variety of circumstances and no problem with sweaty fingers etc. It seems pretty random!
I don't have a warranty so re-install here I come!
I would definetly try the factory reset first. I have had similiar issues but its only been while typing quickly. It lags a bit and then it all shows up on the screen plus a few extras of whatever the last character I typed was.
I did read somewhere, can't remember exactly where, that because our screens are capacitive they can malfunction. What I mean is this:
"Surface Capacitive touch panels: a layer that can store an electrical charge is created on the glass panel. When a user touches the monitor with his or her ungloved finger, a portion of the charge is transferred to the grounded user reducing the charge on the capacitive layer. The controller calculates, from the differences in charge at each corner and determines where the touch occurred."
Sooooo if say the ground for the screen is damaged then it will not register your touch appropriately. Hopefully it just requires a reset, cause the latter I think would be a tougher fix.
Let us know
dfan, is it happen only when you charge your phone? What charger are you use? Original?
I did a restore but no change, issue still there, it doesn't happen often though.
Dose seem like a bug and it never happened to me before the last update.
Also it happens to me when not charging.

very bad.. you cannot drink a cold coke and use the phone. I think that it is a hardware related problem. I was trying to reproduce the same with N1 and Legend (with my fingers flooded) without problems. So.. guys with hyperdrosis keep away from this phone!
No it's not a hardware problem as it only started happening with the last update.
Remember the x10 uses different software to nexus one or desire so can't compare with them.
I believe it's the software lagging, this update is faster overall but just lags occasionally, maybe the next software update will fix it, and if not the 2.1 update should definitely fix the issue.

Are you pretty sure?
Tested... it is present on old roms
Well the old roms were laggy as hell anyway. It seems like classic software lag so I still think it's software.
Maybe when 2.1 is released we will find out, or even better when we get stock android running though root, that would clear it up once and for all.
My iPhone 3g also suffered from similar lag issues.

Hells yeah I don't want a defective screen or this thing is done!
regarding your first comment, this is not lag. It is like I had a turbo button. If I touch for more than 1/15 sec, I get 2, 3 or 4 letters.
instead of one long press, the screen continually registers new presses, no matter how firm my touch is.
Imagine how much fun it is drawing the unlock pattern when my phone's in a bad mood...
That dose sound different to the small lag I occasionally experience, very odd.

I've reinstalled the FW and it didn't fix it.
The other day I had 5 straight hours of rapid-fire screen during which I couldn't even unlock the phone.
Gonna have to send it in for repair. Anybody know how expensive S-E are for repairs? Is it even worth doing?
I have narrowed the suspects down to my generic charger.
The charger I bought outputs over 5V (claims 6.5V) which seems to be the problem since I don't experience the issue when charging from a USB port.
New charger ordered, fingers crossed.
Thanks for all the suggestions!

[Q] Misbehaving N1

I got my AMOLED N1 back in Feb 2010.
Unlocked bootloader, rooted 2.2.1.
The problem which existed from day one but showing much more often these days, is that after running an app (e.g. Market) the touch screen misbehave. It either does not register the touch, or maps the touch about an inch lower from where it should be. The phone has plenty of free memory (internal).
The problem is more prominent since the 2.2.1 update (but I am not sure it's related).
Does anybody else experiencing this?
TIA
Most people!
There is no solution other than the temporary fix of turning the screen off and then on again.

Yes.
I'm getting really frustrated with the N1 due to the ****ty touch screen.
I had a play with my brother's Nexus S.... SO much nicer and smoother. The touchscreen on the N1 is abysmal and shocking!
I've also noticed "freezes" in the sense that the display won't come up - only the touch screen buttons light up and then slowly fade off.... only way to recover is to pull out the battery. Really annoying.

Is there anything that can be done to fix this? e.g. replace a part (whether under warranty or not)?
It is actually becoming hard to even use the N1 as a phone or for text..

My first experience using Android was turning on my Nexus One and encountering this issue the very first time i had to use the screen! The device i have has had this problem in varying degrees since i got it. Very bad to start with, not so frequent after i sent it back for repair.
Take a look at the poll from my own thread about the issue...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=878477
Pretty commonplace problem, which along with the power buttons failing detracts from an otherwise great phone.
Blame HTC, I had this issue on my first N1 earlier last year. I would turn the screen off then turn it back on.

I find it behaves better when the screen is clean. Perhaps finger grease can confuse it... it might be *that* sensitive.
I flashed the frg83d update this morning and I've gone all day without the crazy screen thing and I'm loving it lol!

I am not using any screen cover. I never did. But maybe there is a cover that helps. Those of you who never suffered from this issue, do you use a screen cover/protector? which one?
Also, maybe the issue is intensified by how dry (or not) our fingers are compared to others..
@dusty-:
Do you mean frg83g? frg83d did not help my case. sorry..
Yes I meant frg83g lol

Need help explaining an odd issue.

I really cannot figure out this issue I'm having. Basically, I have the black rubberish/flexible case that T-Mobile sells. Once in a while, while using the touch keyboard ( stock gingerbread, I'm using cm7.) A couple letters become unresponsive. Most work, but others will not.
Weird thing is, when this happens and I take the case off, all goes back to normal. Maybe I'm missing something here, but how could the case cause this?

Maybe the case is applying pressure to the device and for some reason making the screen less responsive. I have this with my TPU-S Curve case and the one with the kickstand on it.
I actually believe that is a CM7 bug. I have experienced the same problem on recent nightlies. Some keys on the keyboard will go unresponsive, while others will work. Occasionally the entire keyboard locks up. Once, the keyboard worked but the image of the keyboard didn't show up (tapping in random spots on a webpage resulted in text being typed, lol).

Everyone experiences that in any rom, even stock, once in a while. The point is, some letters work, some dont. The ones that dont work usually are not even close to each other. and EVERY time it happens, I take off the case and it goes back to normal.
As for the theory that the case was causing pressure, the chances of that are slim for two reasons:
1. It hardly even reaches over the glass. at most, a couple millimeters. http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/AddOns...48e2-bb7a-0e5d354aefa7&inCart=True&catCode=21
2. Being a gel skin, it doesn't really cause pressure to the phone at all. (I could be wrong here, it just seems unlikely.)
This just baffles me because I KNOW its the case causing it but I can't begin to comprehend why.

Just for kicks I tried applying pressure to the edges of the screen using the gel case while typing. I also wiggled the phone around in the case so I could test all positions, all while typing away and nothing could reproduce the unresponsiveness.

Yeah that's true and I like the case to protect it when it falls.
Perhaps the gel case is electrically conductive? I noticed one day I was caught in the rain and some raindrops fell on my touchscreen, which caused random things to be selected until I wiped the water off.
It actually might not be the case... The myTouch 4G's screen has random spots that die temporarily for no reason, and keeping away from the screen or locking and unlocking it can revive the spots. It's not the case at all, probably just the time it takes you to take off the case that the spots revive and convince you that it's the case. Try letting it sit for about 20 seconds when the screen dies and see what happens.

When at home I use the phone without the case quite regularly. I've never had this issue when the case isn't on.
In fact, I can usually (Without taking the case off) go back to the homescreen and do stuff, all spots being responsive, while the keyboard is acting funky. The keyboard itself has the issue but nothing else, even when using the same touchscreen spots.
It's such an odd correlation, the keyboard software itself and the case. Yet there has to be something that one does to the other.
Also, just to make this clear - this ONLY happens to the keyboard. If that theory was correct I would experience this in any app
I noticed this also when I first bought my phone, bought the rubber case the same day. after a couple of months, the letters towards the end of the keyboard would become less responsive and I had no idea why. took the case off and it went away. so I ditched the rubber case and got a TPU, never had the problem since then. I think over time the rubber case gets a bit stretchier and bigger, causing you to have to sort of roll your finger around/over the case to press the keyboard buttons on the end(unless in landscape mode)
You know I've always had this problem, and I thought I was the lone soul that had this retarded hardware (maybe software?) issue. I was on Royal Ginger 2.1 and never had this problem. But then subsequently left RG and started using ROM's like Virtual Fusion, MIUI, Virtual Unity, CM7 RC1 and other CM7 nightlies and all of them I've had the problem where some of my keys would just stop working, most noticeably the "delete" key. Other keys like the letters "P" and other vowels would cause the same problem as well. So I figured it's just another list to add on to the plethora of hardware defects that plagues this phone. I've used several KB's as well such as Flex T9, SwiftKey X, SmartKeyboard Pro and even the stock GB keyboard and problem still persisted in all of them.
So I thought what the hell might as well flash Royal Ginger 2.1 to see if the problem is still there and after 2 days I have yet to encounter it! So now I'm baffled... I was for sure that it was hardware related but now I don't get why it's not happening ONLY to Royal Ginger...
I have had the same case on my phone, it's a TPU case. I know it is not the cases' fault as it's always on my phone even now when I'm on RG where I have yet to experience that problem even once.
So I'm pretty much dumbfounded...
I don't think it's the case. I thought it was a ROM thing... agreeing with mackster on this... haven't had a problem while on RoyalGinger 2.1, but have encountered it on CM7 RC1, MIUI & Virtuous Unity...

Nook Color Issue: Touchscreen Goes Crazy

My Nook Color was all fine and I got a SD-boot of 2.3 CM7 working perfectly!
However, shortly afterwards, I noticed my touch screen kept 'touching' where my fingers weren't. The touchscreen appeared to have gone mad. I couldn't even use the device without having to power off/on the screen every minute or two. It makes the device basically unusable.
Anyway, is this a hardware issue - or is this a known issue with software somehow?! I did notice the issue somewhat in the original boot of the nook, but now it's seems WAY worse (not sure if it's because I'm using it more.)
I've had this exact problem a lot, and I've yet to actually find an answer or a solution on it. It's definitely hardware-caused, though, as I've had Honeycomb, CM7, and Phiremod on here and all of them have given me problems.
I've seen it go crazy when I plug in the charger. Some sort of electrical weirdness with the touchscreen.
Yes, usually when this comes up, the main response is that this is common when the nook is plugged in. Also, try cleaning the screen. I guess both can cause the phantom touches. I get the same thing every now and then. Turning the screen on and off, and cleaning it, seems to help.
First, clean the screen.
Then, turn the screen on and off.
Download Nook Screen Reclibrate and run the app.
Then buy a screen protector!!! Helps a ton! I use Zagg invisible sheild

That. Fixed it for me permanently
THAT's why I had a bunch of screen protectors in my Amazon cart! Lol, I couldn't remember!
Is there a certain brand you guys recommend? Every one I've used in the past has been junk, and it's hard to tell from some reviews if they were just not put on well. Do the matte/anti-glare/anti-fingerprint ones work well?

I use the ZAGG and the shield that came with my trident case. Both work great.

I must have gotten lucky I just bought a three pack on eBay for $3 of the crystal clear ones. As long as you get it on dust free its great. Make sure to buy more than one because one spec of dust will leave a bubble and ruin it.
Nook Crazy screen
After trying many things and reading many threads I eventually found that storing the nook on it's back as a norm is not a good idea. Dial indicator shows a screen bow inwards. Store you device in a face down position for a day or two and the screen will release unwanted touch commands. Hope this will help.:victory:

ERRATIC nexus 4 tocuhscreen. Ghost touches

so my screen started with this crazy thing. theres a dead line on top of the screen. and touchscreen litteraly goes crazy. opens and closes apps, zooms in and out, swipes. this stops when i turn the screen of and back on, temporarely.
the phone has never been dropped or damaged in any way. just started randomly. i've tried 4.4.2, 4.2.2, custom roms, franco kernel,
flashing stock rom via fastboot fixes it,.
dead line desapears, everything goes back to normal. but when i leave it over night charging. the problem revives. i've seen this problem in youtube and google forum.. with the same deadline on the upper screen..
I Made a touchscreen text and everythiing is fine. but when the deadline appears fails
HELP!
My gf is having the exact same problem with her phone at the moment. I'm guessing that the digitizer needs to be replaced...but any other thoughts are certainly welcome.

I also disconnected battery.. no fix. right now theres no deadline. i think it could be the battery. like when you plug in with wrong charger and phone goes crazy.
right now theres no deadline. works perfectly no deadline. low battery tho:crying::crying:
Could be a grounding issue. When I use chargers that aren't probably made I'll have that problem. Try using another wall charger and another wall socket.
Well, mine it's definitely the screen. I enabled screen touches in developer options and there is a dead rectangular area across the top of the screen that doesn't register most touches...and occasionally sporadic ghost touches start erratically pressing this area not allowing me to touch elsewhere. I'll likely have to start looking at repair options.

happened to me with my previous phone lg optimus black and kind of happened with my nexus. in the previous phone i had a lot of ghost touch. they started happening one every phew days and after six month i had ghost touches every single day rendering the phone almost unusable. got it for guarantee and they changed the touch screen. the problem started again on the new digitizer with some sporadic ghost touches, on the same day! after that i bought nexus. after a while i saw ghost touches too but it's rare. for me the ghost touches happened when i was playing a game called tubing and with time happened every where. tubing is a game where a lot of quick touches is required. now that i stopped playing that game everything seems fine
a friend of mine had this problem some time ago with htc hd2. the service told him that this kind of touch technology has problems in warm weather(i live in cyprus and in the summer it gets up to 42 43 degree celcious) .

i only had this issue when i charged the phone with a cheap Chinese charger, it would go crazy till i rebooted, as above grounding issues,
but op said it was gone with stock rom, so its not a hardware issue, tried charging via other means

THIS seems to be a grounding issue. after charging it comes back. but after a while without charging comes back.. no fix yet! i hate how google doesnt give support about this. theres a ton of people with this issue
I have this same issue, was wondering if anyone found a fix yet?
I have lost all touch sensitivity in the down part basically I can't use the Nav bars and also above the nav bars sometimes its very hard to press on things check out my video I have it here in the last part http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDDOSyLLnGs&feature=gp-n-y
nexus 4 ghost touches and dead screen.
Believe it out not, the crazy ghost touch and dead screen areas are NOT the screen. It is the battery. It sounds crazy, but it is true. The bad party is, nexus 4 batteries are old. Buying a new one won't necessarily solve the problem. I would buy the brand name this party battery.I have had bad new oem batteries die to their age.
Hello guys ley me join this party of ghost
As my device is also doing same weird thing like unnecessary touch without my feedback in most of third party app, setting app and in play store it goes crazy and start clicking on any option available without my touch
But the thing which is making me frustrate that this happens only on custom kernel as I tried all with stock google factory image 5.1 and this problem arise just a few days back and I was on custom ROM with custom kernel before 5.1 update everything was fine but after 5.1 update I mean custom 5.1 ROM with custom kernel this problem arises now if I m going back to 5.0.2 custom ROM with custom kernel my device become crazy and just start clicking any option in setting app I m totally stuck with Google factory image and stock kernel
Please guys if any one has pepper solution for this ghostly touch help me so that I can enjoy custom ROM and kernel :crying:
Mouse BlueTooth (without adapter)
I found the cheapest possible solution, as the replacement digitizer is not profitable.
I bought a mouse BlueTooth (without adapter) without problems and now I can move the cursor around the screen over the entire surface.
N4 is not for me everyday device.
In my case, I bought a mouse i-Tec Bluetouch 243.
