[Q] Can´t get into Clockwork recovery menu - Click General

Hello all,
I'm a newbie on this Android matters, I've been using Android Donut just for a week
I want to upgrade from 1.6 to the latest gingerbread. I've been reading all about rooting, flashing, backups etc...
So far I rooted my device sucessfully using Androot. Installed Rom Manager and hit the Flash ClockworkMode Recovery, now it says Current Recovery: ClockworkMod 3.0.2.7.
For my next step I want to do a full backup of my current stock rom before proceding with the installation of the new rom. The problem is, I can't get into the Clockwork recovery menu on startup, even if I choose startup on recovery on Rom Manager it takes me to the stock recovery and there is no backup option.
Can you help me?

On power up press the Home + Power key all in one go..............

I tried that and the screen stops at an image of a triangle with a phone next to it. Then I push again home + power and the screen of Android recovery appears, but with only 4 options, reboot, factory reset, delete cache and install zip from sd card.
When I go to Rom manager, Clockwork is installed.
I'm now reading about two files that may stick stock recovery, /system/etc/install-recovery.sh and /system/recovery-from-boot.p, I think it is supposed to erase or rename, but using Root Explorer I can't see any of that two files.
I really want to use clockwork, backup stock rom and move on to the latest CM7.
Give me some advice
Thanks

AFAIK, rom manager flashes temporary clockwork mode recovery when you select this option from its menu. But isn't really flashed permanetly. Download latest clockworkmod recovery(I think there is a link on kalim's cyanogenmod rom thread) and flash it via adb with flash_image command.

Thanks, I will give it a try. I was trying to get it done without using adb or terminal modes, but if it's the only way, I'll try.
What about the tattoohack file, I've been reading about it and it must be "installed" or I may brick the phone.
Any update I'll post.

If you have errors, with command line is better to understand in which step the error occurs and find a solution.
As for the tattohack file I think that needed a specific kernel version to work properly. And there are 2 versions of that file. And if you have another kernel from these two, probably you will have problems. For this I suggested to first flash the international stock rom.

No success. I've unrooted the phone and did the cyanogen wiki tutorial with m7 exploit, su and flash_image.
I can't do the chown root.root su, it says chown not found or something like that. It also happens before to get stuck into a loop with rebootcommand appearing on shell when I do the exit after the root. Then I can't make the root stick. I do ctrl+c to kill the shell. I tried doing the rest of the proccess but on chown the command don't apply.
I need clockworkmod recovery in order to flash the latest CM7 right?

Maybe I can try to use this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=950759, it's an automated operation.
I didn't make a goldcard, but on this tut it says that it's a nice to have. I'll try to do it with this method.

cant get into clockwork recovery
i have the same issue i have clockwork flashed from rom manager and is says it is installed the latest 5.0.2.0 and i even flashed it via ADB flash recovery but after i flash recovery from ADB and from bootloader i go to recovery i can go in the clockwork recovery but once i reboot the phone turn it off and try to reboot in recovery with power+trackball on my nexus one i get the triangle with the exclamation ! and then the stock recovery options
can anyone post a solution to this please....

I know about your problem cuz i had it also and i couldnt install using a pc cuz the usb port was cinda crushed.
The problem is that u used Universal Androot 1.6.2 Beta 5 to root, am i correct??
If that the case then you just need to root via Universal Androot 1.6.1. That solved my problem. Then you just need to continue like you started with Rom manager.
I figured out that the root made by Universal Androot 1.6.2 Beta 5 was causing the fakeflash.

Clockwork Mod recovery mode ??????

I am having a problem accessing clockwork mod recovery mode, no matter what process i try it consistently takes me to android recovery instead.
info:
samsung fascinate
rooted
Did odin flash back to stock
Did factory reset back to stock
Did software ota update to the following specs:
HV i500.04
M# sc i500
Firmware 2.1 update 1
Baseband S: 1500.04VD101
Kernel 2.6.29
Build SCH i500 DH101
Installed CWm Recovery from market
Installed Asto file manager from market
Installed Titanium backup from market
Opened CWM application
Went through root permissions dialogue
Flashed CWM recovery to 2.5.1.0
Next i clicked on BACK UP ROM which reboots me into Android Recovery Mode and gives me the standard 4 options for the fascinate:, plus it says installation was aborted:
1.After failing to find update package
2. open update package
3. verify update package
At this point i click on the home button and reboot system now.
Next i try flashing a different CWM Recovery version to 2.5.1.1 , 2.5.1.3 , 2.5.1.4 , all resulting in and error message, so i am still using 2.5.1.0
Next i try toclick on manage and restore backups but there are no backups listed even thouigh i did back up Rom earlier.
next i try to install the Geeknik ROM( Stupidfast v1.23(D101) from the Download ROM section.
I click OK to dialogue box that ask do i want to Down Load Rom
The Stupidfast ROM download starts and finishes
Notification bar says download is complete so i click on notification bar and this takes me to dialogue box which asks do i want to back up existing rom and wipe data and cache . i say yes to both and click OK.
Next dialogue box asks do i want tot reboot. i click Ok
i am then taken back to Android System recovery.
No matter what i do in Clockwork Recovery i always end up back at Anroid System Recovery. i have tried all different scenarios -debugging checked.debugging unchecked, clear cache, dont clear cache, back up rom, dont back up rom, usb connected, usb unconnected, Titanium in,titanium out. watched all different you tube videos on subject.
sorry this was so long. i didnt want to miss any answers to any question any of you might have if at this point you want to offer any help. thanks in advance.
You have to flash CWM with Odin before you can use it. Can't just install from the market or ROM Manager
Kevin, Thanks for your response to my question.
i thought i already flashed CWMRecovery from within ROM Manager. it is the first option at the top of CWMRecovery, also it states under that first choice that my latest recovery id Clockwork Mod 2.5.1.0.
If i scroll down to the bottom of CWMRecovery the last choice shows all of the CWM Recoveries. Recovery 2.5.1.0 is listed at the bottom and is the only one i can flash/install.
In both instances it says that i have flashed this version(2.5.1.0) of CWM Recovery.
I will try whhat you are suggesting and thanks again for the help, it is appreciated
Kevin , I followed your instructions and flashed the CWMrecovery.tar file with Odin3_1.3 and everything is as it should be. The funny thing is (at least to me) that the CWMrecovery version that is listed when i am in recovery mode now is CWM version 2.5.1.0, which is the same version that i flashed within rom manager. Kind of confusing but at least i am where i want to be. Thanks again for the help.
Yeah, it's just one of the quirks with the Fascinate. Unlike most devices, just flashing Clockwork with ROM Manager only puts the update.zip on your SD card. Using Odin to flash the .tar file installs the recovery, so both parts are needed.
where i need to put CWMrecovery.tar in ODIN in which section PDA/PHONE/CSC? 1nx
You only flash things in PDA section, doing otherwise will screw up your phone

Im kinda new to all this stuff and just wanted to get some step by step stuff if you dont mind. I rooted my Fascinate tried clockwork mod wouldnt work when i tried to backup after downloading the recovery thing and when i read this you guys said something about Odin so I went to appbrain and downloaded tuxility but now im lost on what to do. Maybe something step-by-step would be good. Really appreciate it! (ps: I know im kinda slow but if you wouldnt mind...)
The stock recovery does not allow us to run unsigned zips. Thus, we must flash the CWMrecovery.tar to patch recovery to allow us to run these unsigned zips. Then you can flash CWM from within Rom Manager.
Follow these instructions from fallingup's thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788099
THANKS
Thanks ALOT this looks really simple the only thing that idk about is how it said to put it in download mode. Idk what that means. Debugging? and do I mount it? Thats all i think. THANKS agian.
Download mode: power off, pull out battery, with Odin open and USB connected to PC hold volume down and plug in USB.

[Q] Help. 2.2 rooted. cannot flash at all

I've been having a lot of problems getting my tmobile vibrant into cwm recovery,
i flashed recovery through cwm and selected boot into recovery. when i get into recovery and select reinstall packages, I get mixed messages.
i tried flashing cwm with the initial update.zip it puts on the sd, little bar shows up at the bottom and gets about 1/3 of the way, and says
E:/failed to verify whole file signature.
installation aborted.
Went into clockworkmod folder on my computer retrieved the recovery-update.zip, renamed it update.zip. I tried putting both of these files on the sd card root, /external_sd, phone internal memory and the sd folder on the phone. nothing works
Am i doing this wrong?
Have you tried the fix permissions option in CWM? I have had strange errors like that before and that helped.
can you be more specific please?
it says an error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands.
search for 3e modified recovery in the dev section
reply
that might help me if i knew what it meant. im just learning about this stuff but it seems to be getting more and more complicated all the time
I guess this post is dead.
Thanks for the help guys.):
Go into SuperUser and see if it runs. It sounds like you lost root. If that is the case you may need to re-root it.
What do you mean you flashed recovery through cwm? If you can already use cwm you shouldn't have a problem.
Have you tried downloading ROM manager from the market? You will need to have your phone rooted to install cwm through ROM manager.
U r probably on the 3e recovery and have to get back the 2e recovery don't odin back to 2.1
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Here is the tutorial: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=925400
Run a search before posting and you will most likely find the answer! :]
It works for KA7 too.
You probably just need the steps of putting it into shell root > script from 3e recovery to 2e recovery, then you're good to go.
I just odined a new kernel and after that, my phone went into cwm recovery and i flashed nero v.3. everything works great.

[Q] Problems HTC MAgic 32b recovery mode

HTC Magic
SAPPHIRE PVT 32B
HBOOT-1-33.006
CPLD-10
RADIO-2.22.19.261
I have problems getting in to the recovery mode (pwr button + home) it just gives me de red vodafone screen and hangs.
I am trying to install a custom rom.
- rooted the device with universal androot. it says my device is rooted succesfully.
- i also installed rom manager and installed the default clockwork recovery.
But i cant reboot into flash recovery.
I also tried another thread with a custem flash recovery recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.7.0G.img. I followed it's instructions.
the instructions tells me on a terminal session or CMD prompt to install this custom ROM.
adb shell
su
(Now look at your device. If the superuser app is asking for permissions, then just push "allow" and make sure that the "remember" option is checked.)
cd /system/bin
ls
But i get no permission. I cant get root user when i type su.
so I must not have a rooted device or my permissions are incorrect on the sd-card.
Does anyone have an idea what i should do?
Did you reboot your phone after running Universal Androot?
Sent from my LG-P500 using Tapatalk
What happens if you switch off the phone and then press and hold home button while pressing the on/of button to switch on the phone.
If you are root and have installed the recovery properly, it should be shown within a few seconds after showing the red vodafon screen. From there you should be able to flash any custom rom. Meanwhile I flashed many recoveries and roms on both my tattoo and my magic 32b. Never had any problem execept those when forgetting to wipe.
And to be honest, I'm far away from beeing an expert!
I installed rom manager first and then universal androot.
also when i use adb from the android sdk i sometimes get the problem that i have no permission.
Could it be that the phone is'nt correctly rooted?
I tried all kinds of tools either on pc or mac. nithing really works
what would be the best way to root the HTC Magic correctly and what recovery image should i use. Also wich order.
I'm quite the noob when it comes to installing custom roms
Try "SuperOneClickv1.6.3-ShortFuse.zip" (available at xda).
This was very easy to use and worked like a charm.
I used it twice on my magic 32b, no problem!
I tried that also.
the rooting works. I tried an app to check if i have root access and it says I have root acces.
but when I use adb commands and su to root it will say no permission.
i think this is why installing the recovery in clockwork fails.
any suggestions?
I'll repeat myself. Have you rebooted the phone after running the root programs? Either one?
yes. I rebooted after each try but still I can't get into recovery mode. it just hangs.
also when i try to install a recovery image file i still get the no permissions errors.
the only recovery mode install that worked was the recovery from clockwork in ROM manager.
If ADB is working, goto shell (adb shell).
What do you see in prompt,
is it '$' or '#'?
If it's '$' try "su".
What is the output of "id"?
If you're root you should see something like "uid=0(root) gid=0(root)"
I See a $ and my id is shell instead of root.
if I type su it will give me a no permission error.
however I did download a terminal tool for android
from there I can su and it will make me root.
is there anyway i can use the terminal to install a recovery image so that if i boot my phone with home+power I will get into the recovery?
Try something like this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4056530&postcount=6
Replace the recovery image in the post by for example recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.7.0G.img.
I did it almost the same way.
I was also having a recovery problem (Tmobile) after trying to flash_image RA-1.7.0G into recovery in rooted 2.2.1 OTA (obviously not the way to go). I downloaded the Clockwork Rom Manager from the Market and it was able to flash both Clockwork or Amon RA recovery with no problem and then reboot it into recovery.

When you reboot and go into recovery, does it load amon_RA or clockworkmod?
I had problems with that from the 2.2.1 OTA.
I was rooted for a long time, and then had to try the t-mo 2.2.1 so I unrooted and ran that for a while after their ota update. It was sluggish and I didn't much like it so I thought I would try using z4root and superoneclick to root it and put setcpu and overclock it a bit to see if it improved. Z4root didn 't work and superoneclick appeared to work. If you went into terminal it would give you # and seem to be rooted. I could install and run set cpu and it would work. However no matter what recovery I tried to install, it would disappear and return to stock recovery upon reboot with the 2.2.1 OTA.
You could get rom manager to load, or seemingly so , clockworkmod recovery. You could also have rom manager load into clockworkmod from within rom manager. Buit as soon as you reboot, it goes back to the default stock recovery.
I eventually gave up with that and decided to reroot old school and rooted it manuallyl. I went back to the sappimg.nbh file, installing the old cyanogen 1.4 recovery, the 1.33.2005 SPL. I then put clockwork mod 2.5.0.7 recovery on and then the t-mo 2.22.23.02. I was running cm6.1 for a while and now Yoshi's ginger rom.
And so, after this wandering tale, lol, I am wondering if you had more success that I did with the 2.2.1 and getting a recovery to load.

You could have just got booted into recovery once, flashed the engineering SPL only (there's a ZIP you can flash from recovery to do this), which would only change the SPL, from recovery, then erase/reflash the recovery from fastboot, and finally change the SPL back.

Thanks; that is very useful , and I didn't even think of that at the time. I think I was so frustrated that the recovery would not stay I just had a "I will make it work moment" and I knew what I was doing would work.
But thanks, I will definitely remember that if I have to do that again

[A] Bootloop after flashing a ROM via 3.0.0.5 Recovery image.

What you did .. .. ..
Okay so you've rooted your newly bought MyTouch4G, and you've made sure that s=off and you've flashed Clockwork ROM manager's recovery image that you got from the market. That is all the correct order. But when you flashed a ROM you got stuck in a bootloop.
Am i screwed???
Don't worry you are just in a "soft brick mode", or "limp mode" if you will.
What happened? Why is it doing this?
The Image that you downloaded and installed 3.0.0.5 is for 2.3 (Gingerbread) based ROMs only. [n3rd note] these are ext4 style ROMS. They act and store information differently than 2.2 which are Ext3 ROMs[/n3rd note].
This could also be caused by trying to flash a 2.3 using a older 2.x.x.x version of the Recovery Image. Those will only support the Ext3 style ROMs, which are FroYo (2.2) based ROM.
Okay what do i need to do to fix it, there are two methods.
This is Method one it's the older version.
You must use this method if you do not have the engineering screen
If you are using the 3.0.0.5 Recovery image
To fix your problem you need to flash any 2.3 based ROM, for time sake i will recommend Cyanogen(mod). Link to Cyanogen(mod)'s CM7RC4. While you are there you need to also store the G/Apps.
If you are using the 2.x.x.x Recovery Image
To fix your problem you need to flash any 2.2 based ROM, for time sake i will recommend RoyalGlacier Thread can be found here
- Question: How do i find out what Recovery image i am using
- Answer: Boot the phone into the recovery mode. We'll touch on that in a little bit
Now when you download both of those files you also need to store them to SDCard.
NOTE: If you are using 2.x.x.x and going to flash RoyalGlacier you will not need the g/apps. They have included this in their ROM, and MAKE sure to follow their specific directions for installing the ROM.
- Question: Now how in the world i am going to do that since my phone is in bootloop.
Answer:
Two ways one can do that
1) use a SDcard reader and just plug the card into a main USB port.
2) Mount the SDCard in the phone via the Recovery Image. *** i'd recommend this method since you are going to need to be in recovery anyway ***
Pull the battery from the phone an put it back in, then put the back on the phone. turn the phone on holding the power button along with the volume down rocker button. That will boot the phone into the HBoot (Engineering) Screen. From there you will see an option that says "recovery" [this is what i mentioned earlier, about the different versions] use the volume rocker to select it, then tap the power button to select it. The phone will reboot into what is called the recovery image. From there you will select "mount" then USB. That will mount the SDCard to the Computer.
If you are using the 3.0.0.5 Recovery image
Once you have move Cyanogen(mod) and the g/apps to the SD card unmount the SDCard.
Then navigate to "wipe data/factory reset" you will want to wipe the phone. That will format everything to a fashion that can be written over w/o problems.
Then navigate to "install .zip from sdcard" > " choose .zip " > then flash the main Cyanogen(mod) ROM. Then do the same but flash the g/apps that you downloaded.
Once those are done you can re-boot the phone. That will boot you into cyanogen.
If you are using the 2.x.x.x Recovery image
Please use the link i supplied above to get that ROM up and running once it is done, according to their instructions come back here.
Now i understand that may or may not want Cyanogen nor RoyalGlacier on your phone. Well take care of that
What can i do to prevent this from Happening again?
Once you are up and running (make sure to log into your Google Account) go to the market and download Clockwork ROM manager again, and re-flash the recovery image.
Once you are done with that i HIGHLY suggest upgrading to the newest 3.0.0.6 Recovery image. You can do that one of two ways.
one way is to flash True_Blues method for installing 3.0.0.6 recovery image. Use this thread..
This is the way that i would personally recommend.
The second way is download the 3.0.0.6 recovery image, which i've attached and flash it via the ADB commands. If you want to do it this way you do not need to download Clockwork Rom Manager, you can "just flash it". If you need help with that, if you are using Windows or Mac, see my signature for True_Blue's method on EZ ADB. If you are using Unbutu 10.10 use this This Method to get ADB running. This is the method i used to ADB running on my Linux NetBook.
Download the file that i've attached and store just the recovery image from the .zip to the SDCard, from the ADB commands type
adb shell
su
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
Click to collapse
More information on this process can be found here
That will flash the newest recovery image to your phone
Once you have installed the 3.0.0.6 ROM Manager you can wipe and flash ANY MyTouch4G ROM that you want. It will handle both 2.2 (ext3) and 2.3 (ext4) ROM formats.
This is the New Method - Which is a little easier.
AND YOU MUST HAVE THE ENGINEERING HBOOT
Thanks to TeeJay for inspiring this.
I am going to assume that since you have the Engineering Screen you are more familiar with what you are doing so i'll be more to the point with this walk-through.
you will need to have ADB up and running for this method.
1) Download the attached file and store just the .img to your folder from which you preform all of your ADB commands
2) plug the phone into the computer
3) boot the phone into HBoot
4) from the ADB commands change the drive to the folder where you stored the recovery image.
5) type these commands
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
the screen should say something to the degree of
Code:
sending 'recovery' (3426 KB)... OKAY [ 1.172s]
writing 'recovery'... OKAY [ 0.797s]
finished. total time: 1.969s
6) then select "bootloader"
7) navigate to "reboot recovery"
8) flash your ROM of choice.
9) enjoy your ROM of choice.
Please feel free to use this in your signature or link people back to. If you feel i made an error in this post please PM and i'll edit it accordingly.
If this thread has helped you solve your problem please hit the "thanks" button.
THE RECOVERY IMAGE HAS BEEN UPDATED TO THE NEWEST ONE.
good summary. originally when i flashed cm7 I had to search a bit to come up with what you said above. one addition, CWM lets you mount sd storage to usb so you can copy files to sdcard (say the recovery image). then update CWM 3.0.0.6 with ADB.

Well i work in the Imported Automotive parts. My job requires me to basically sit around and answer the phone when it rings. We have our own "call center" room. I just pick up the phone and answer question and sell parts. Like right now i'm working on a engine rebuild kit for a 1975 2Ton Mercedes Bens..... so i get some free time from time to time, and XDA is one of a few sites they allow me to visit.... BGR/ Android and Me, Android Central are the others....
I can see why some people blow up, spend +$200.00 on a phone then turn around and blow through something w/o taking the time to read something and then you get stuck in a bootloop.... i can see why people go bonkers. But slowing down and reading would solve alot of problems. Heck i've got 3 great threads in my signature that would solve alot question that one could have with a new device.
fixed my problem

Great guide!
Same issue, except i flashed 3.0.0.6 beforehand to prevent any problems. Iced Glacier flashed okay, I just didn't care for it much. Ive wiped all the necessary parts prior to flashing as I would before flashing any roms. Ive managed to retrieve and restore a previous back (I can haz backups) so Im not stuck. I would like to be in the cool kids cyanogen club. Any ideas?

Meaning you want to run Cyanogen(mod)? Well jump over to their site and download the ROM of your picking; Nightlies are alpha builds, and the RC's are beta builds. I've ran both and both are extremely stable. I have links supplied in the first post. and directions for that matter. just make sure to do a nandroid backup before wiping and flashing.
Thanks ....Saved ME LIFE
Posting so I can see the "thanks" button. Doubley thanks you saved my bacon....err phone!! Hmmmm bacon!
Ok I am having one Problem PLEASE HELP!!!
When I click "wipe data/factory reset" it just shows the clockwork icon (hat and arrow) and nothing happens.
In fact, this happens with all of the options in the clockwork recovery.
I am running clockwork 3.0.0.5. I had CM7 and I did something stupid, tried flashing another ROM via rom manager....I did back up everything though.
Please tell me I am not bricked!!!

Why do you say that?

brick Nexus S

Hello. i am new to the android family
i have a nexus s GT-9020T
i have rooted my phone but without setting the clockworkmod reovery.
today i was playing with the rom manager and downloaded one of the rom from the list. after installation i was unable to start the phone only seeing the google logo with the unlock logo.
i went back into the recovery by typing flash recovery recovery.img etc.
run a restore and restart the phone but still not work
my nexus s is 2.3.4 by the way.
please assist
What "restore" did you run?
Go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056062
And download the full rom:
Model: i9020T
Full Rom: GRJ22, KD1
That'll revert your Nexus S to the latest completely stock 2.3.4
Then you can flash recovery again and go back to clockwork mod and go flash another rom or whatever.
Remember when you're flashing a new rom you need to wipe data and cache and dalvik cache.
i run an restore from the backup that i made before installing the new rom using clockwork mod recovery, its part of the option when installing the rom using the rom manager * click box - backup * etc something like that

Next time don't use Rom Manager to make backups or flash roms. It's stupid and can get you issues like you're having.
Anyways, try wiping data and cache then restoring the backup, do it in Clockwork Recovery.
Let it boot, first boot always takes a while, 5-10 minutes. If you see the boot animation freeze, stop and restart, then yeah it's screwed up, otherwise, just let it is.
If still not working from your backup, do what I said in previous reply, just restore to stock 2.3.4 then re flash clockwork mod and start over with the rom you want to flash.
thank your nxt. i have found the real problem. it was not my backup problem or the rom that u provided. it was the version of my clockwork mod recovery. i was using an 2.x.x.x to restore the phone which is why it doesn't work. everything work fine now after i flashed with an 3.x.x.x and restore the phone. one question thou, where can i always find the newest clockwork mod recovery release ? thank you very much

Or just use ROM Manager to get the latest.
That's the only thing I use ROM Manager for... getting the latest Recovery.
thanks again nxt. if you don't mind really ...i have one more question. i know the phone intend to uninstall clockwork mod recovery once its restarted. i know there is command type into the cmd to avoid the phone uninstall the clockworkmod reovery and make it permanent in another word. I didn't run those command when i root my phone because i don't know if its good to make it permanent like.... hmmm like if there will be a 2.3.5 coming next month..just saying ok... with a permanent unofficial recovery will cause a problem?

Are you running custom ROM? If you are, it's already made to not revert back to stock recovery. If you leave it stock recovery you'll get notifications for firmware updates by Google, but remember that applying those to a rooted phone might screw things up too.
the blue one is stock recovery right?
