[Q] Battery thread - Acer Iconia A500

Hello,
My battery is not so bad, i try CPU master to change frequencies and it works (215-912 Mhz for my first test).
One question:
In parametre / applications / battery:
the GSM !! take around 20 %, is it normal, is there something to do to stop that ?

I'm assuming you mean the Cell Standby? I'd love to know as well. In fact I think I'm going to ask some Asus people if they're seeing it in their Honeycomb version. Seems like a big thing to overlook by Acer if Asus doensn't have it.
I get great battery mileage as well.

Cell Standy seems to show up along with Tablet Idle (which makes sense) when going into standby or sleep. According to the stats it was taking a huge portion of my battery.
I was only able to get 5-6 hours out of mine, so took it back.

I mentioned this in another thread, but you can disable the cell by enabling airplane mode. When you check it, Wifi will shut down also. But you can re-check wifi and airplane mode will still be on to keep cell from working and draining your battery.
Also, the little airplane mode icon by the status bar goes away after about thirty seconds, if extra icons down there is the type of thing that bothers you.
This will save about 22% of the normal battery life used over 8 hours.

Makes no difference, Cell Standy will still show up and take battery.

I have verified there is no SIM card reader present in case anyone was wondering. Don't attempt to put one in it.

I did the same thing and the battery seems to draining slower

Started playing today at 9am. Replaced charger at about 7.30pm with 14% battery life.
Surfed the net
Played HD and non HD video games.
Watched some YouTube videos
Watched some online tv shows (Simpsons)
Some idle time
Pulse reading
file manipulation

Re-set
Does anyone know is there a way to reset the battery?

Same here. Cell Standby doesn't ever turn off and in Airplane Mode, BT turns on and I don't want that.

Same thing here. Left wifi on, turned off cell standby. Cell standby still shows up in battery usage, but got noticeably longer batter life.
Definitely saves some battery.

By removing the phone.apk and telephony no more cell standby now. Thanks.

I had cell standby using 30% of my battery at first and then I turned on airplane mode and re-enabled wifi. Since then it is a noticeable improvement. Also, there is a slot next to the sim card for the future LTE feature that has a grey sticker over it.

Also as mentioned, rename phone.apk with root explorer or delete at your own risk and there will then be nothing to use the cell radio.

I tried using Astro to rename the apks, but getting a permissions error. Is there a free option for doing this?
UPDATED: I also tried Ghost Command and Android Mate...still getting permission errors. I even tried going and renaming the files via terminal. What I'm I doing wrong???
Just as as FYI, I'm trying to rename the files by just putting ".old" at the end of them.
Thanks!

Went ahead and got Root Explorer. That did the trick! Now I'll keep an eye on the battery usage and see what happens.

Are these the ones in /system/app? If not, where are they located?

The wildfire has a really good battery already
No need to calibrate imo. Can last 2+ days for me when I don't abuse the wifi and games.
First feedback.....no noticable difference seen.....What do seem to help is to charge you phone longer even after green light indicates that battery is full.....For me than takes longer to go from 100 to 99.

How do you do this? I'm doing everything, I underclock my phone down to 160-245 Mhz, I turn on my wifi only when I have to, I keep my phone in airplane mode permanently, I constantly run on display turned down to max. And yet I've yet got to witness my phone going over 18h uptime. Do you run a custom ROM or something?

I find the same thing, and have even been thinking of returning it because it can't last longer than 24hrs. I have even restored to stock and hard reset, so no apps added or anything, BT/WIFI off and the battery life still sucks.

Yes I've tried openfire rom and wildpuzzle rom. Battery lasts as I have stated. I also use setcpu to set up profiles when phone screen is off to help it a little
Would also like to add that on the stock rom, the battery lasts long as well but custom rom is better
My phone is a stock. But as you can see, the battery life leaves a lot of room for improvement. How can I increase ir?
Not sure, but after rooting my battery life improved signigficantly, and it also charges fast than before... htc wildifire.
ok so i charged my phone to 100% and left it on my table untouched last night when i got to sleep, left it in my pocket today at uni without using wifi/games, just to check the time, is currently still at 99% with up time of 14hrs so far.
and if you want to maximise your battery life with stock rom, lower brightness, disable auto sync of accounts, disable 3g if you're not using it, try juice defender, i think that might help you guys.

Hmm strange, I have installed it and icon shows normally in application list.
I went through the calibration process and my battery life has increased significantly. Currently I have 5 hours and 12 minutes of uptime with occasional phone calls and some wifi usage - battery is at 99%.
I find that battery life is all about how strong ur signal is.
At home i get a full 3g signal, battery lasts about 30 hours with my syncs on all day, couple of hours of wifi and maybe 30 mins of gaming and about 30mins of phone calls.
When i'm at work and the signal fluctuates i get about 20 hours average.
When i was in a restaurant for a party recently from 7pm to midnight, there was hardly any signal and i used about 60% of the battery in 5 hours!
At the end of the day if the battery lasts for 18hours with all my stuff turned on then i won't complain as the phone does everything you need except make the tea!
I mean what's the point of turning all the smartphone stuff off? Might as well just go and buy a Nokia.

[Q] Acer A500 Wifi, Extend Battery Life

Hello.
I did some google searches and i've found a thread where someone claim that:
* locating the directory /system/app -> PHONE.APK and TELEPHONY.APK
* removing or renaming this files, for example to PHONE.OLD and TELEPHONY.OLD
is the trick to extend the battery life, you'll earn a few hours. True or, ... a metropolitan legend ?
Don't advise it ....

Well, lots of people are doing it, but it will apparently cause problems with updates, and may even brick your tablet if you update with those files renamed. Instead, just set your tablet to 'airplane mode' and turn on Wifi. My tab is getting 12 to 14 hours almost continuous use this way.
My advice is NOT to do it. We will be getting the Honeycomb 3.1 update in June, and it is supposed to address this issue.

Turning on Airplane mode did not work for me.
I am always in Airplane mode and if battery usage is accurate then cell standby is still the second biggest drain on battery (next to display).
This issue and the amount of bloatware are really my only two gripes with this tablet.
turning on airplane mode will not work. Rename those two files and just name them back when restoring or updating your tablet. Just don't forget or you'll brick it. My battery life is awesome when it sucked before
Turning on Airplane mode didn't seem to work for me either. The percentages are still much the same.

Yes, you need to root your device. Use Gingerbreak and then a good file manager, maybe Root Explorer (market.android.com/details?id=com.speedsoftware.rootexplorer&feature=search_result). It's not free but it's wonderful.
Get the "Acer Iconia Phone Disabler" app. It gives you easy, push-button support of this, and works flawlessly. If you decide to update, you just use the app again to enable the telephony services.
Darned near fool-proof.

I don't have anything against paid apps. In fact my Iconia has got a lot of paid apps but this app seems useless. It does the same thing explained in this thread with 1 click. By the way, if you suggest paid apps, it's always a good thing to insert a reminder....
Why the hell this tablet have cell radio if we can't use it ?
Airplane mode
I agree that the battery use report still shows that cell standby is eating up the battery, up to 15% on my A500, however that does not change the fact that my battery life has increased to 12 to 14 hours on an average day of use.
Why don't you turn on airplane mode and turn on WiFi and use it that way for a day or two and see what happens? Maybe it doesn't work for you, but it is working for me and others.
You can't always believe what a report tells you, but you can usually believe what you observe for yourself.
My settings app also tells me my 16 gig external SD card is only 14 gig, but I know better than that. I can stick it in my laptop and it reports 15.something gig. Maybe the OS just thinks it is polling for service while in airplane mode, but in actuality it isn't.
And to repeat what someone else asked, why the heck does a WiFi only tablet have a cell radio in it anyway? Even if is part of the main board, it should have been diabled.

have you by chance run a battery monitor such as "battery monitor widget" that gives the mA rating of the power drain? Mine is still very high (400-1200 mA) when doing your solution. I'd be interested to know your drain b/c based on the projections I'd only have between 4 and 6 hours use, not the 12-14 you get. Thanks

There's absolutely no way to get 12-14 hours of continuous use out of this tab. I think many people reporting otherwise are counting sleep time as well.

Battery drain when powered off w/o dock

I've noticed that when I attempt to power on my Transformer a couple days after powering down that the battery is completely drained as if the device was never shut down. The only way to power on is by plugging in to an outlet. I was under the impression the battery would last longer than a few days when powered down.
It definitley should, if I just put my tablet in sleep and leave it all day, it loses about 1% per day, so turned off I'd expect the same or better.

Mine was in standby with airplane mode on (wifi off) - B3OK
100% battery was down to 64% by the morning. In 10 hours lost 36% battery
With all the talk about keyboard dock drain - I think this is more a important issue.
I have a B50 tablet, and mine only looses 1-2% per day if left in standby. This is in Airplane mode. Dunno what you guys are doing to loose half your charge over 24 hours.
Probably background apps. Some apps force load themselves (Like Thumbs keyboard and TapaTalk which wants to prevent standby on installation according to someone else on this forum).
I am also experiencing this issue. When I put the tablet on standby the battery continues to drain. When I when to sleep last night the battery was at 30%. When I turned it on this morning, it showed 4%!
This is unacceptable. The battery saving option is turned on. Is ASUS aware of this issue?
if you look at the battery info chart, does it show it becoming awake shortly after using it and staying awake for quite some time with the screen off?

B50 here. 0% battery drain. woke up and used it to check XDA for a little bit and went down to 98% but that's to be expected since most tablet/phones don't like to stay at 100% battery level to preserve it longer.
airplane mode while sleeping.

it would also be helpful for you guys to say what ROM / kernel you're using.. and if you're stock, say stock. hence why people on XDA have this stuff on their signatures
I am on stock. Could it be because I have some apps running that are causing this battery drain? Or is it the microSD card?

microSD wouldn't drain your battery. I would say check your battery usage but that's disabled on stock.
- Check your Google Accounts in Accounts & Sync. Is Picasa Web Gallery checked for syncing? I heard there was a bug about that and it consistently drained the battery even when you're not on Wi Fi.
- Any syncing apps, make the interval longer or make it a manual refresh if it's not important.
- There is a bug where the tablet may be trying to interact with Mobile Data. I'm not sure why but people on other Honeycomb tablets have reported the same thing. You can bypass this by activating Airplane mode. You can still use WiFi when it's in Airplane mode.
- I personally don't use any SetCPU profiles. They tend to do more harm than good. Just my opinion, it's up to you but if something's going wrong with your battery. Try disabling them and see if you notice a difference or not.
- My WiFi sleep policy is set to "when screen turns off." Even though I select this, my tablet still gives my notifications on emails and stuff. Seems to be working well for me.
- Don't use any task killers.
- If you use a kernel that supports undervolting. Play with the settings and undervolt. My kernel that I use doesn't support it but I still get good amounts of battery life.
- I don't overclock. This could drain your battery as well (unsure, but it probably does to a certain extent). At 1.0GHz my Transformer is fast and responsive so I don't OC anyway. I only OC for benchmarking for fun.
Many people have said to disable GPS. But in fact, GPS is on demand! Even though when it's enabled, GPS is only used when a app or the browser requests your location from GPS. I personally have it on, but it's up to you really.
There. I just compiled some battery tips. Hope they help.
A true way to find out if something is severely wrong is to put your tablet into Airplane mode while sleeping. When you wake up, check how much % you lost. If it's over 5-7%, I'd probably say something is wrong with your setup.
^OK thanks . I will give it a try when it is fully charged.

It's the serial number. Check the sticker on the dock for S/N or on the box that it came in.
After making the changes I described in my last post, I am now losing about 2% every 4 hrs. That is 0.5% every hour on standby. Much better than before but I believe others here have a much lower battery discharge rate.
I will continue to monitor the battery discharge rate under different scenarios.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using XDA Premium App
Same problem, if left overnight looses around 30-40% of charge and looses 3-4% as soon as I disconnect charger. All sync is of, email check is manual. Juice defender is installed and on. So I have checked its logs and it says that almost every 10 minutes tablet uses WiFi connection. Went to Settings of WiFi connection and unchecked Notice about open Wifi spots and checked Always on when cgarger plugged in instead of "Always on". Will see how it works now.

Improve your Xoom's battery drain/standby substantially!

This app has made my battery last 4-5 days instead of 2. It is called Auto Airplane Mode by DON. It does just that, automatically enables airplane mode when the screen turns off. Most battery drain occurs while in "standby." This app shuts all connections off and saves a big chunk of battery.
I am sure it will work for your phone too, but since you receive calls on a phone it would kinda defeat the purpose.
Here is a link to the android market.

In theory this is a helpful app for those who aren't looking to sync devices during these intervals of having the screen off.
But I think in the case of the WiFi only Xoom this isnt necessary because WiFi turns off during screen off anyway right?
And on 3G it may prove to be more helpful because of sync. But the number one killer of battery on a tablet should be the display.
Anyway, good call for the app. Thanks for sharing with the community.
I dunno I don't experience that much battery drain, I been getting around 4 days with causal use (wifi model)
...and why would you want to be in air plane mode when the screen turns off on your phone?? You wont be able to receive phone calls or messages. mind as well turn off the phone at that point lol
But at least we have no Amoled-display. Amoled is the most consuming type of display.

No, you have a choice and HC3.2 has a bug that can cause random reboots unless wifi sleep policy is set to never. Don't know how this would affect that issue.
In moray rom it is one touch on/off(notification area)
so,while watching movies or listening songs one can turn off the wi-fi.

I worded that wrong. Obviously, your battery will drain more WHEN YOU ARE USING IT and the screen is on.
For many people, myself included, the "standby" battery loss/drain is excessive. This app helps A TON with that.
Mike the majority of understand you what you mean.
Some tablets spend most of their time and energy "waiting" to be used.

I can't complain too much about my battery life. My Wifi is always on 24/7 even when the screen is off or I am not using it. I like to be notified at all times, ya know. My CPU speed is way underclocked with the screen off so I get a killer standby time regardless. I don't even notice any kind of battery drain at all really with my Wifi always on, but a good tip nonetheless.
Underclocking is an amazing way to save battery life when you are not using it, or even when you are using it. For root users only, of course. If one were to be rooted that is what I would reccommend the most for someone looking to save battery life. Underclocking+undervolting makes for a power saving beast. Even more so than just disabling all connections.
But, combine auto airplane mode/Wifi screen off and underclocking+undervolting, and you have the ultimate power saver. If you don't need to get emails or notifications of any type this would be perfect for you considering the fact that all connections would be disabled.

Note doesn't stay in deep sleep all of a sudden

Normally, after work, my battery would be around 85%, but all of a sudden, yesterday, my battery after work was only 24%. I am not sure what is the cause of this behavior. I installed apps like tripit, travelsafe, skyscanner, onthefly, but I don't think that should cause this.
I have tried the battery removal trick, but it hasn't worked. The phone wakes up every few minutes and therefore, drains a lot of battery. Could someone offer good insight into what is causing this and how to solve this permanently? Thanks.
I am on ICS LQ2 with speedmod kernel k3-3, and my battery was great even on ICS until yesterday.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA
According to the tings I've read, you should always unlock the screen before removing the charger and if the problem persists just do a reboot.
That's what always works for me - on Speedmod kernel.
I'm on sppedmod kernel and sometimes will not go into deep sleep...phone will get very hot in my pdocket which to me is a sign that its not going into deep sleep. ill then do a reboot and monitor thru cpuspy. reboot works but I've not found a permanent solution as yet.

Thanks for your replies, but unfortunately, rebooting hasn't worked for me.
What else can I do? Please do not suggest formatting or wiping anything, as it would be too much of a pain to do with my current configuration.
Perhaps you can try to - flash abyss 3.9 for GB - run that jbroid kernel cleaning - reflash your kernel.

I would like to stay away from any flashing our wiping. Any other options?

Use betterbatterystats tp analyse what is causing wakelocks, search for app thread
Edit othereise you are just shooting in the dark.

logout google latitude from google maps app. Remember whenever you open the "google latitude app" you will automaticly log in. so only use google maps application to log out.

I'm on latest stock ICS and rooted (not that that should make any difference.)
Rebooting phone after charging works every time for me, and had become my staple routine.
mine too?
hi, i had a similar problem...here i uploaded my battery graph, does it show that my phone never really sleep too?

Have you tried going to Airplane mode only? If you haven't done that, then try to see if you can turn your phone mode off and observe if your still getting the high battery drainer issue.
One of the big drainers in the battery are your high percentage screen output. If you got a high screen % output that means you got wakelocks and it's being triggered by an app/s on your phone.
See if you can disable one by one those apps you mentioned above, charge up your phone to say 10 to 15 mins, take out the charger, set screen timeout (on settings to 15 secs) and turn off the screen and set your phone to airplane mode off. Observe for an hour without using it.
Note the percentage on your Screen from the time you took out the charger to the time you check back (after an hour) to see if it had gone down already.
Cheers/
Hi,
ICS has this 200 MHz problem and, for the moment, there doesn't seem to be a lot to do about it. I reboot every morning after charging and I'm fine for the day.
Without getting paranoiac about your battery (you have your phone because you use/need it, not for becoming a world champion in Deep Sleep ), mind what you install.
I usually "lose" between 1~2% capacity/hour and manage to run it a whole day with ~60% of the battery (WiFi, BT and GPS active). Yesterday I installed some Security thing and jumped to 4~5% immediately. It also caused constant 200 MHz mode and reboot didn't change a thing.
I dumped it this morning and am fine again. Here's my situation after 3h48m of activity today, I have 88% left
(Sorry for the big picture but I don't manage otherwise )
I keep my GNote as standard as I can and just verify briefly, with CPU Spy if everything is fine after installation of a new App. If it's no good I delete it and that's it.
Thanks everyone for the replies. Without quoting everyone, let me say I have tried all the tests you guys suggested. I have tried the airplane method, rebooting, monitoeing for apps, etc. I dont have latitude so didn't try that method. I also reinstalled speedmod k3-3 kernel last night.
I upload there images: system battery info., cpuspy and betterbaterystats. It seems, for now, my phone IS doing a little better with going into deep sleep. Unfortunately, I don't know which method worked, so I don't have a definite solution for anyone suffering from the same issue. As an observation, my phone used to go into deep sleep mode much more than it does now.
Edit: I have attached the following five screenshots to be analyzed. It seems the issue is not solved yet, and the phone still doesn't go into deep sleep the way it should. Could someone help point out from the screenshots what's going on? Thanks.

Edit: Another reason for frustration that I can't upload the screenshots directly from my phone as they are pngs and jpegs. While uploading i get an error that says the images are not in the correct foemat. How do you upload the screenshots directly from your phone?

Could someone please examine the cause of the issue from the attached screenshots in my earlier post?

Have you tried removing the battery for a few mins? Try that then reinstall the battery and charge the phone for a few hours while off. It worked for me. Found the tip on the India update thread.

In your screenshots you have WiFi running for a lengthy period.
WiFi is notorious for eating the Battery.
Only use it when you actually need it.
The only contradiction to this is when you are actually using WiFi for an extensive period (do not include turning off the screen and leaving WiFi running in this description) it is kinder on the Battery than a Data Plan.
Also, as jpmiv mentions.... don't just remove the Battery (which I note you have already tried this method) but again as jpmiv mentions leave the Battery out of your Note for a short while before reinserting. It will clear away any residual memory on the Note.

I put the phone last night into airplane mode, turned it off and charged it for several hours.I'll test how it works today and post the results. If it doesn't show any signs of improvement, I will try your recommended method.
For historical information, I did try removing the battery for more than 10 mins, but did not charge it while it was turned off after inserting the battery. As I said, I will try your method after some testing today.

Yes.
Thanks to both of you for your suggestions. I'll post results tonight.
Could you or someone comment on any rogue apps from the screenshots which are causing the battery to drain faster? Is the behavior as shown in the screenshots for kernel and partial wake locks normal?

It's definitely your WiFi which is the main culprit.
Look at the WiFi Running and wlan_rx_wake
Have you turn off your WIFI dude?
Judging on the screenshots you made... your WIFI has been ON for a lengthy of time and anyone knows that if you enable your WIFI, it's surely going to eat most of your battery.
Try to see if you turn it off, and see if there's a considerable on your phone's battery after.

Yes, wifi is on, but what I should have mentioned is that I used to have a much better deep sleep time even with wifi on before last Friday when the issue began showing up. Also note that the wifi was on only because I was home - when I am at work, I am on data connection.
Is there anything else in terms of apps that you find unusual or the cause of the issue? Something is waking up my Note more often than it used to.
