Docks and cradles - Acer Iconia A500

Acer official accessories are expected soon; however, in the meantime, this docking station and remote have appeared online at HMV.com

Here's the other item I have on order from eBay for my new Acer tablet.
Portable Fold-Up Stand for Motorola Xoom Tablet
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160543570947
This looks to be a handy portable stand. The Xoom and the Acer are very close in depth (12.9mm vs 13mm) so I suspect it should work with out modification. A lot less expensive than the dock and available today !

This little stand looks really versatile.

I got that stand, it works well.
Got mine from Amazon. Bit cheaper:

Really nice case at Staples. Resembles ( may even be the same one as) the case that Acer had on their EU store.

Has anyone purchased or used the iProp stand yet? This looks amazing since it's flexible for wherever I'm using my Iconia. I think I'll order one in the next few days. Thanks for the link man

I bought this based on your post. It looks EXACTLY like the acer store version and it better be. I'll let everyone know. This is a great purchase if it's on the money.

I've got one of these on order: http://padpivot.com/ I ordered it when it was first on Kickstarter so not sure when they'll be on general release.
Looks nice!

I went round the corner to maplin and asked did they have any spare stands they use for their tablets, they gave me one lol
Let me know if anyone else has any luck...

I did try the actual Xoom's protective case. Unfortunately, it does not fit. The Acer is wider by about 1/2 inch. I had to return the case and order the one now offered at Staples for the Acer. Just an FYI if anyone is curious

I have held the Xoom and Acer side-by-side. The size is actually quite different in both length and width. The Xoom is smaller on both counts.
However, the iPad is wider than the Iconia, and the Iconia 20mm longer than the iPad. I have found that the Iconia will fit in some iPad sleeves. Provided there is a bit of 'give' in the iPad sleeve's length.
Anything that is purpose built for another device though (with specific dimensions in mind) is hard to adapt.
Also, 10" netbook sleeves and cases have proven to be quite good with the Iconia as well. Often there is a little wiggle room which is handy for cables and chargers.

Received it today and it works great with the Acer. I have it setup on my desk slightly tilted back and the tablet is much easier to see and use. It's very adjustable and very stable.
Also got a DAGi stylus to use with it (see picture). It works much better than a rubber tipped one and is much more accurate. Also, no fingerprints !. But it's something else to carry around.

I just picked it up from Staples and so far so good. It does what it says although it doesn't seem like there is a way to keep the front cover flap secured to the back when in use. I'm not sure that I care all that much about it though. Otherwise seems like a good deal for the money.
PS. It seems to be the official ACER case.

hmmm. sort of ugly.

Got the dock from Acer. Wanted to throw a few pics down as well as a review.

In your review... you state: "you can NOT dock the tab with the case on".
Are you referring to the Acer case? I was thinking maybe it was thin enough that it might allow docking? Thanks!!

Edit... incorrect. When I saw how thick the tab was with the flap back I didn't try to shove it on. I have been told it works fine tho.

Yeah, definitely unfortunate! I haven't tried taking it out of the case, but it was a bit of bother getting it in. Very tight fit. Wouldn't want to wrestle it in and out on a daily basis.

[Q] Iconia W500 keyboard?

I haven't seen one in person, but since the design is similar enough, I thought I'd ask if anyone knows if the keyboard unit from the W500 tablet might happen to work with the A500? I can see logic going both ways, but if someone has had the chance to try it out, I'd love to know how it went!
From what I've researched on the W500, the keyboard uses USB, and will not work for the A500.
That was one of the things I was most excited for was the keyboard for this guy. It looks like it hasn't been released, but I'm sure they will end up making one at some point.

i am a little confused i connected my dell keyboard into my A500 and i was able to type with no problem so if the W500 uses a USB keyboard then i would think there should be no reason for it not to work .

For USB, it means that is uses an USB port...
Surely you can use a USB M to F cable or plug your A500 vertically on it...

Well, that photo certainly clears up my questions - I mistakenly assumed that the W500 would use the same dock connector, but they're clearly more different than I anticipated!
Here's hoping that we'll get a similar keyboard setup at some point as an accessory. Until then, there's always bluetooth, which is probably a good enough solution that I won't bother with a specific keyboard if it is released...
It seems that keyboards and other accessories can now be ordered direct from Acer's online store - for those of us in the US anyway. No photos yet. But it appears that the items are available.

A500 Keyboard??
Just saw an interesting post on TechniDroid. Guy claims he spoke to someone at Acer who confirmed there will be a keyboard dock for the A500. Since I'm a newbie on this forum I can't post the link unfortunately.
If you search "Acer to have keyboard dock for a500" it should pop up.

You must not have seen the w500 keyboard if you're asking that question. Look it up and it will become very clear why it wouldn't work on the A500. A sad sad day for us all. I too was looking forward to that keyboard dock with the superior A500.
Sorry for digging up the thread, but Acer now lists the keyboard on their site. It's not a dock, completely separate, but it looks very nice.

No, I ended up ordering the HP Touchpad keyboard from UK ebay. Not 100% match, but it was 1/3 the price. And looks nicer.

Very Low Profile Bluetooth Keyboards...?

I'm not thoroughly convinced that I need a keyboard with my device, but if I was going to buy one, it would have to be either very small or very thin. Why tote around a keyboard that's just as large as the tablet?
Any ideas?
Of course, there's always this: http://www.thinkgeek.com/computing/keyboards-mice/8193/
(if it was ever in stock again).
I am currently using the Acer wrapping with an Incase faux-fir slip case, so I'd hope that it would be low-profile enough to fit in there.
I am curious as well. what are the best keyboard/case combis that we can get
If you give me 24 hours I think I may have a pretty small keyboard that may work for us. I just need to test it first to make sure the BT connects properly. Feel free to contact me 'if' I forget to hop on and post findings

Also, a prerelease product info page on an interesting BT fold-up keyboard:
https://jornostore.com/
that jorno is nice but not for that much!!!! you can get a flexi keyboard bluetooth on amazon for around 30
I was considering getting the Motorola atrix keyboard.... i have the atrix so that with bluetooth on the tablet would work fine specially considering the android function buttons..
I have the Moto keyboard (Link) and for the most part it's a very nice unit. The only real issue with it is the massive bump in the back where they put the batteries and whatever else they have packed into it, that and not all the short cut keys work, but I am not sure that is the keyboard.
It's worth the purchase, and is very nice on the plane, but I find myself not carrying it locally just due to size. The Jorno looks like a great compromise for when I am more local but want to slam out a page or two...

Sure, it's not going to be the world's greatest keyboard, but I'm really just looking for decent yet portable. If I really need something more, I've got a Logitech K340 that works great. It's not bluetooth, but Logitech's USB receivers are so small anymore that it really doesn't detract at all.

Riot Outfitters Leather Case Review (*With PICS*)

I will update this thread tonight with pictures and an in depth review. I was in a Canadian Best Buy close to work and saw this case below the tablet area. I had read mixed things about Acer rubbery case and got cold feet with my expensive PD Air order after reading some mixed reviews on their service.
The company is Riot Outfitters and the protective case is leather. I have opened it and so far it looks fantastic. Magnets for closing it and it can be configured into 2 stand up modes using a flap that collapses with a magnet at the back. The ports are all exposed with the one exception being the docking port. I will take pictures tonight and offer some more thoughts.
UPDATE: Sorry pictures and full review delayed as I had a family function to attend..tonight for sure...
As promised here are some pics and an additional comment based on a few days of use. My only other complaint (other than dock port being covered) is that the unit slips a bit when it is tilted in landscape mode (non volume side) as the magnetic slip over latch doesn't hold the unit completely in.
Here are some pics and ask away if you have any questions. The only other thing I forgot to mention was the price. The unit was $49.99 at the Canadian Best Buy.

Looks like a promising alternative to the PDAir cases. However, it does seem very loose. Does it seem pretty secure to you?
Chlballi
The slight slippage I was referring to only allows it to slip so far as the unit itself fits in snug at the center width. Undoing that clasp and purposely holding it up the unit does not slide out. However, with that said it is a bit loose in that one orientation and being leather it may get a bit looser but all in all I would rather have it a bit easier to get in and out versus what I have read about the Acer one which seems to hold it too tight. Also for $10 more you get something that is leather and doesn't smell like gasoline
I also don't think it would require much effort to rig it to make it fit completely snug and have some low cost ideas already but at this point I don't require it.
I also picked up this case and I've only found one issue with it. When using the tablet in landscape mode with the side that opens facing down, I've noticed that the tablet sides down somewhat and the case edge covers the ambient light sensor causing the screen to dim. I've even noticed this in portrait mode on occasion.
They should have put a notch in the side for the light sensor like they did for the front camera. Five minutes with a sharp exacto knife fixes the problem
Cant find this case
on Riots website?!
UPDATE: Added pics of Packaging including SKU/Part number above for those interested.
there is a GIANT problem with this case and with most other cases out there..
(I have one..)
It was designed to fit the device... upside down... chances are a person will 90% of the time use it in the "not to high" angle to kind of lay them with a good viewing angle so they can type while on their lap or on a desk..etc.
The problem is the whole device sits upside down when you put the device into this sleeve.
This wouldn't be an issue if the rotation worked as its supposed to but its currently extremely buggy in HC, games will always display in the original ladnscape mode so using this case, they'll appear upside down.
Also... there is that horrible bug in honeycomb where all other rotations perform like garbage... so that really annoyed me.
I solved this by cutting the proper holes for the device to fit in rotated by 180 degrees.

I even sent them an email sing if they planned on releasing this in Best Buy in the US. No reply as of yet..
Got a reply from them today and its as follows:
Tom,
We do have that case available for sale.
The cost is $19.99, the only problem is we can not process a credit card at this time for this item because it is not on our site.
I can process an order 2 ways, one you can order something for equal price from our website and when the order comes through I will see your name and send the Acer Tablet. Or the other way is to send us a check.
Let me know if you are interested in either of the above options and I will make sure that you get your order.
If you would like to call me to discuss details let me know and I will give you my direct line phone number.
Thank you

Sounds like an awful lot of crap to deal with just to purchase an accessory for my tablet. Especially one that will require modification to hold the tablet right side up and fit snugly...

True, but for $20 you are getting something that doesn't smell like gasoline
I just keep brightness on manual so the lack of the brightness sensor being obscured for me personally has been a non factor...so I have done no cutting and the only thing I did was add a clasp which cost me $2 so the unit is completely snug. I can post some pictures but agreed it is post purchase. I am confident the PD Air is a better case...much better but also much more expensive.
i wasnt offered a purchase deal from Riot/Tanya in the email she replied to me. she just said they were looking at getting it sold in US Retail stores but nothing right now.

Hell, it'd be nice to just be able to order one from their website, can't even do that. That may be why she offered me a shot at it. My problem is the part about ordering something else, paying for it and then hoping the monkeys in the packaging/shipping department sent the right item. Don't know that I really wish to deal with the headache if they screw it up.

I jumped down to Officeworks (AU) and found this;
officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Office-Supplies/Desk-Accessories/Mesh-Desk-Accessories/ES47548BK (Can't post full links; not enough posts!)
I realise it's not a fully fledged tablet holder, and it wasn't the manufacturers intention however it is so cheap, and works quite well despite it's low form factor and simplistic structure. It is enough to hold the tablet up while charging to give you a decent view of the screen.
I don't believe it will replace a proper case/stand, however for something so cheap it's worth it

Another Vote for the Arkon
I went on the cheap. I went to Micheal's (arts & craft store) and bought a decorative plate stand. It was $3.99, looks kind of like a small art easel, folds flat, fits in my 10" laptop sleeves pocket, and is perfectly sturdy.

I bought a stand for only $2 it was at Dollarama (Canada) and it was meant for iPads. I would show some pics but this forum tells me I am noob.
I didn't want to leave my new Iconia unprotected so I bought the cheapest cover/stand I could find. It was an Acer branded cover/stand for $39.99 at Fry's Electronics in Arizona. My Iconia Ghost Armor is finally in and being put on the tablet today so I'm returning it. The GA would just peel if I tried to force it into the Acer cover. Looks like the $13 Arkon is cheap and durable which is better than the $40.

sorry guys, i did a major site upgrade and the links are all different. it is fixed now.
but yea, that akron stand looks really good and portable
The best stands in my book are the Compass Stand http://twelvesouth.com/products/compass/ or the Griffin Tablet Stand https://store.griffintechnology.com/tablet-1/motorola-xoom/tablet-stand. Neither are cheap, cheap - around $39.99 or $29.99 respectively - by shopping around you might find a better price. But what they both do is fold to a small portable size, the Compass Stand is the best in this department, and neither put stress on the docking port. I also used the Arkon Stand for a while, but over time, I felt that the central gear joint loosened up too much to be a secure support for my larger tablets.
Just my 2 cents.

Look great but too bad they did not include a mousepad. If so I would buy it straight away
Soooo beautiful. Great design, but over $100 is little too much to me for keyboard folio.
Holy Christ on a spike, that's bloody expensive for a keyboard! Not a chance in hell.
NewEgg has it for about $75

Oops, sorry, ignore that. Just realized the product codes were different, that one's for Apple.

Just bought the one you mentioned above; keyboard works pretty good but times out very quickly. It has to be reconnected in the settings every 15 minutes or so of inactivity. Typing is extremely fast and responsive though.
This keyboard is more of a universal keyboard than it is tailored to Android. It's got a home key on it, and the esc key doubles as a back key, but it also has a Windows logo key.
My biggest complaint is the folio case itself is extremely cheaply made. It's floppy, and doesn't really support itself very well. As a matter of fact, it almost makes it awkward to use. The keyboard is molded into the case and does not come out. The tablet is held on by one big sticky patch on the case. It doesn't leave any residue, but it does leave me wondering how many times I can remove the tablet from the case before it doesn't stick any more. Unfortunately the tablet doesn't fit into my car dock RAM mount while it's in the case, so I would be removing the case every day.
The case also covers the speakers on the Iconia, which muffles the sound pretty good.
All in all, like the keyboard, hate the case. I think it's way too overpriced to have such a crappy, flimsy, cheap feel to it. I think I'll be returning it.
Att sells a real nice keyboard. Very thin. 50 bones though
The standard acer bluetooth keyboard and acer mini usb mouse is the best combination I have found to date. I use this setup in the office. But to go mobile...this makes you carry around a keyboard no matter what. It's nice, not practical for daily mobile use IMO.
worth it
I got this keyboard, works wonderfully. Adhesive bit sticks nicely to tablet, keys travel well, And connects easily via bluetooth. Worth it if you need a keyboard. I've used it for school, taking notes, even writing whole essays on docs
I bought this keyboard for only 14 bucks
^Same as him. Works like a champ too, I would recommend it in a heart beat. I've had mine since Feb and its still in great shape plus, despite the look, it protects the tablet well.

@Kratoschile and @bobiscool07..... Perhaps either or both of you could explain to me why in a thread entitled "New Bluetooth Keyboard folio. Looks much thinner", you are posting pictures and comments about a USB keyboard?
