Feature discoveries - Galaxy S II General

EDIT: I have updated this post with features/discoveries to date - 01/08/2011
Hey guys,
i've just arrived off the HTC boat and i'm lovin' the world of the Galaxy S2... what a phone!!
anyways, thought i'd make a thread on features as they get discovered as i tend to find that a lot go undocumented, and as i'm not a user of a previous version of Touchwiz, i'm not sure whether some of these are new or not, but maybe of interest to someone else like me...
Dickie
Mentioned so far - 01/08/2011
Dragging left on a contact sends them an SMS, and right calls them. This works in all the contacts list, messaging, call log etc...
You can pinch-zoom the app drawer and move panes as per the home screens
Home + Power buttons = screenshot
With manual brightness set, hold your finger down on the notification bar after a few seconds it becomes a brightness scroll. You just move your finger left/right on the notification bar to decrease/increase the brightness
In the address bar type in "about:debug", hit the go button. It won't do anything, or so it seems. Hit the menu contextual key and pull up the options. Go all the way to the bottom
In the address bar type in "about:useragent" to change user agent
An easter egg you didn't know about(it's from Google), if you go to preferences and about phone and click three times on Android Version you get an art
Pinch on browser whilst zoomed right out takes you to Tab/Window overview
Customise shortcuts in the Camera app. Just click 'Menu' and 'Edit' or hold the 'Cog' icon and you can drag the shortcuts you want to appear on the left of the screen
The dots that represent the home screens/app screens can be tapped to take you directly to the relevant screen, or held to reveal a slider for super fast scrolling
You can Pinch to zoom in the camera app
If you pinch to zoom in the stock e-mail mailbox it compresses all the mail by date. When you press on a compressed date, it expands the mail for that date only
You can smart dial in the phone app by typing a contacts name, if its not the correct contact displayed, click it to reveal all possible contacts, then select to call
Hold the power button for approx 5secs for an immediate shutdown
Use 2 fingers to scroll on a list to get an immediate stop upon release, use 3 to get a fast scroll that will continue to the end
Drag left and right on the video player to control FF and RW
Pinch the calender app to view by year, then swipe to change
holding on a letter on the right side of the contacts list & dragging to the left (without lifting your finger) will bring up another alphabet list & do a sub-contextual search under that letter of available options like 'AA', 'AB', 'AC'...'AZ'

didnt know the app drawer could be pinched zoomed : ) that sounds cool.
the swyping contact to call or message was there in the original G S as well though.

cool, thanks for letting me know!!
the pinched view of the app drawer, with my current 6 panes, are very large, requiring scrolling down to see them. theres only enough room for the first 4 (2 per row) and 2 halves before scrolling... if that makes any sense lmao...

This is a big one: apparently Home + Power buttons = screenshot... I just heard about it. I live in America so haven't used it.

I don't know if they left this feature in, but in the original SGS if you hold your finger down on the notification bar after a few seconds it becomes a brightness scroll. You just move your finger left/right on the notification bar to decrease/increase the brightness. I think it only works if you enable/disable auto-brightness. Someone will have to verify of course

Can you also see if the browser trick still works?
In the address bar type in "about:debug", hit the go button. It won't do anything, or so it seems. Hit the menu contextual key and pull up the options. Go all the way to the bottom and see if it will let you change user agent strings now

Sweet! Let's hope you guys find some neat tricks!
As for the ones mentioned:
- The sliding on the logs/contact list was already present in the predecessor (slide to the right to call, and to the left to message)
- Helicopter view/Pinch-zoom on the App Drawer was enabled in TouchWiz after the official Froyo update on the Galaxy S (International version)
- Screenshots were also enabled on the previous GS(International version) after the Froyo update, but there you had to hold the Back softkey for a second, then press the Home button.
Let's keep hoping for new things!
On a side note, could you try and let me know about this please:
While editing text, does it pop a magnifying glass to help easily position the cursor, similar to the iPhone's iOS and I believe HTC Sense as well?
Thanks!

Thanks for the screenshot trick. I was thinking it was the same combination as the original Galaxy, never thought to try other combos!
Now I can uninstall the shortcut app I downloaded

No, but there is a little tab that appears just below the cursor, which you can drag so your finger doesn't cover the text you are trying to look at. It works well.

10 Awesome Tips&Tricks

Click to collapse
1. Using the Windows Phone 7 voice controls
Press and hold the Windows key at the bottom of your screen and you can start talking to your phone. Try saying "Open Calendar", to see what we mean.
2. Adding apps to the Start screen
When you are in the long applications list on your phone pressing on an icon and holding brings up a contextual menu that gives you a series of options, one of which is "pin to start". Press on this option and the app will be shown on the Start screen.
3. Add people to the start page
No it's not just about adding apps to the start page, but people too. Find them in your contacts book, click on the "pin" icon, and they'll be added to your Start page so you can speed dial them whenever you need.
4. Moving your tiles around
Adding a new app or tile to the Start screen will place it right at the bottom. If you want it to be elsewhere, press and hold on the tile in question and then you are free to move it up and down and rearrange your tiles to best suit your needs.
5. Removing apps from the Start screen
You like the app, but you don't really want it on your Start screen anymore. No worries. Hold your finger on the tile in question for a couple of seconds and when it highlights press the no pin icon in the top right-hand corner.
6. Uninstalling apps
You've tried it and you don't like it. No problem. Head over to the menu list and press down on the app in question until you get the contextual menu. Select uninstall and you're done.
7. Rating and reviewing apps
You really love the new app you've downloaded, so much so that you want to rate and review it so anyone else interested knows whether it's any good or not. With Windows Phone 7 you don't have to wait until you delete it to rate it, you can rate and review it at any time. Press and hold down on the app in question until that contextual menu appears and then choose "Rate and review". It will bring up another page allowing you to have your say and give it a rating out of five. Easy peasy.
8. How to change the theme
If you've got your Windows Phone 7 phone from Vodafone the theme is going to be all red, O2 is dishing out blue themes and Orange, orange ones. An all red themed phone might be a bit much (we hear you), but fret not as you can change the colour of the tiles and other features in the Setting area. Zip on over to the menu list, select Settings, and then Theme. Here you can choose the colour of the background and the accent colour. Background options are "Black" or "White" while you'll get nine accent colours to pick from. Lime, anyone?
9. Swipe to the left
Windows Phone 7 is built around the idea of panoramic tiles that you swipe to reveal more content off screen. It's always worth seeing if you can swipe to the left as there might be more stuff waiting to be revealed.
10. What are the dots?
Whenever you see three dots at the bottom of the screen, that's a menu for more options. In photo playback for example, it will give you the options to delete the image or perform a quick upload.

1st, when you link your live account to the phone, you'll automatically get an e-mail from Microsoft phone 7 in your inbox.
this had some useful links in it. for example, I didn't download the full zune package, but another version witch works as well and is quite a bit smaller.
2nd, create an extra live account with false location settings, i set mine on Beverly hills, California, so you can access marketplace, xbox live etc.
(you can add an other account for your e-mail settings etc)
Search Button

Because the HD2 has different hardware keys than the WP7, the home key for the HD2 is the search button for Windows Phones. Depending on where you are, pressing the home button will give you different search results.

MUSIC&VIDEOS:
Enables search for videos, music etc.

Transparent Lockscreen Wallpaper

This is the link to the wallpaper:
http://phone7.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/clawpaper.png
Simply send yourself an email with the image attached, then open the email on your phone and save the image. When you view the image, you have an option of setting it as your wallpaper(The Zune software only seems to sync JPEG’s)
Click on the PNG attachment and then wait a few moments. Once the ‘cancel’ button next the attachment disappears, click again. This should open it in the picture viewer with the option to set as wallpaper.
Until the lock screen has started any animation, the home screen will appear black. Presumably this is because the home screen isn’t loaded until the lock screen has been touched, which makes sense. Secondly, it doesn’t work if you have a password on the lock screen. Having a password is obviously a good idea, so it’s a shame this doesn’t work with the password.

Its a great way to quickly press and toggle on/off your radios, BUT what i think would be FANTASTIC is that a long press or a hold on that same icon (so you're not wasting any more space)... Will launch the settings for that button.
Example, long press on:
1. Wi-Fi - takes you to WiFi setting
2. Bluetooth - takes you to Bluetooth settings
3. GPS - Maybe have this launch an application,
(i prefer GPS-Status, but I could see others wanting Google Maps)
4. Silent/Vibration - (see notes below)
or have it take you to settings/Sound/volume popup
or /setting/sound/vibrate popup
5. 4G - (see notes below)
or have it take you to Wireless/network settings
I understand cyanogenmod has a feature that allows you to select which widgets to display in this area. Great feature, because who really uses the silent button up top, that's what the volume rocker is for... And im sure 60-80% of us are not in a 4g area so that's a waste too.
I see no need for the Silent/Vibration in the pull down, we have a hardware rocker that does the same thing. So i say replace it with Brightness Auto on/off (with a long press going to settings/display)
Optional (i would like some feedback)
For most of us not is a 4g I would like 1 of three things
1. I love the tiny flashlight app/widget so it would be nice to pull down and turn flash light on/off https://market.android.com/details?id=com.devuni.flashlight (long press opening app?!?)
2. Open Phone, (log press open contacts)
3. DroCap (so you can take a screen shot.)
4. IDK what do you think????
So 1st off from a development point is this possible, The log press to other action and changing default action of slient/4G?!?!
And what do you thing about this request?!?!?
Thanks to the great delevorpers here and mkasick for his Ringer volume fix!!
That is a huge request lol. Not impossible but some major framework editing required. I don't have the time right this second but I'll look at trying to get one button to work just to see how hard it is
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
Even 3g toggl in place of 4g toggle would be a huge help to me =D i know it's not so hard to press the power key, but (half?) of the US doesn't have 4g lol
Lol, I guess it is a big request, I'm not a developer so I wasn't thinking what would be involved.
I was just throughing it out there.
...But I was pretty sure that if it could be done, it would be incorporated into most of the Roms here.

As someone who travels quite a bit, I can tell you that the vast majority of the country does not have 4g. Population-wise, 4g is near a lot of people (major cities/large population), but geographically it is almost non-existant.
As for the idea in this thread, if someone could get this to work it would open up a whole mess of new possibilities. I'd imagine if you could make the toggles open up the settings, you could also make them do a whole slew of other things, and maybe even replace the dock entirely for those of us who prefer things minimalistic. Not holding out any hope, but it would be really really cool.

Swipepad does pretty much what you are asking, only in a slightly different way. It's even a little better, I think, because the swipepad will appear even at times when you can't get the drop-down thing because you are inside an app. Anyway, it's a free app in the market that I use for a lot of the stuff you are wanting (basically it gives you 12 quick launch buttons that you can set to whatever you want and which appear when you swipe on an area of your choosing) --- try it out and see if it meets your needs:

I love this app! Key to it is say you on default top right. Don't slide down the edge and to the right it opens notifications. Put your finger right where the screen color ends and the black border starts anywhere that red line showes when you set it up. It vibrates then slide to the left

ICS improvements list

Hey guy so like many of you I am enjoying the awesomeness that is ICS. It seems like everyday we are finding new improvements not listed on general android websites. This is why I'm making this thread to compile the list of added improvements to our transformers. So as you guys find new features, throw them on the list so everyone can enjoy!

Here's the official list. Asus may have added a few other things. And of course, there may be other smaller items left off of Google's list.

Asus Weather Widget
I noticed the other day that if you have the Asus Weather widget on your home screen you can now make it bigger by holding your finger on it and dragging the border down. this will then give you the next 4 days forecasted weather underneath. I am pretty sure it didn't do this in HC.
Saw an interesting vid/fix for poor GPS/Wifi here
ww.products-reviews.info/blog/asus-eee-pad-transformer-prime-wifi-and-gps-fix/
Anyone know where I might see the mythical birds/ satellite indicators. Never seen one in either Navigation or Maps.
Brings sunshine to my life. Not to be a jock rider but ics is the ish.

That's one of the features of ICS, resizable widgets. The ICS launcher also supports scrolling for widgets. Features from custom launchers and ROMs that got added to the basic Android system.
As far as handy, fancy features go, have you tried the swipe to remove feature for notifications? Works just like stopping recent apps. It's nice to see feature consistency in Android.

I found a neat new setting... under "ASUS customized setting", you can reconfigure the Right Button and Middle Button actions on the keyboard dock trackpad or mouse (There is no Mid Button on trackpad). I immediately changed the right button to "Show Context Menu" from "Act as Back Key". I cant count the number of times I exited SpashTop from clicking the right button as I would normally do in Windows.
I don't know if this was part of honeycomb or new to ICS, but if you drag one icon on top of another it turns into a folder.

I saw that as well. The only problem I had with remapping the right click was that to show the context menu you still have to hold down the right click button same as you would the left click.
Also, when using rdp/vnc apps, ones they all registered the new right click as left click whereas before they registered them as normal right clicks in the windows environment being remoted to. It seems that these apps are programed to convert the "back" command to right-click.
Apart from that, it is a neat feature.
Anyone else notice the music control buttons on the lock screen? I had tried to get that working with an app before and failed, and gave up / got bored ;-)
I hope by the time I get my Transformer back it will be in working order and the ICS update is out for Australia I had to return it for repairs as the screen was moving inside the casing
I wonder how many new things I'll find on it over the ICS on my Galaxy S phone here's hoping for a lot of good things and hopefully things that wont break it. I don't think I could stand having it broken again only had it for probably 3 weeks

Seriously this is a great find thanks man!

I've found it to be much faster than HC, where I would get quite laggy performance.
Also the updated file manager app looks spiffy.
FYI I've replaced the stock launcher with Nova launcher.

I don't know if this was part of honeycomb or new to ICS, but if you drag one icon on top of another it turns into a folder.

Lol, my 3 year old showed me how to do this today. I know for sure you can not do that on my ginger evo3d. I said to him where are my icons. He said I put them together because i like them like that.

I just notice while watching Netflix while connected to TV via HDMI, the Tablet screen goes black, leaving just the remote display playing. I don't know if this is a new ics feature, but on honeycomb, netflix would leave both screens active.
Plus, while typing text, if you tap and hold over any text area, a blue selection arrow appears. If you drag this arrow around, a magnifier window appears so you can finely place the text marker exactly at the word or letter you want. Double tap a word to quickly select it.

Tips and tricks

I thought I'd start this thread to consolidate all the info on the features of the Note 10.1 for those new to Android or tablets, those who are on the fence about buying this, or those who just haven't figured out all the cool features yet
Here's some off the top of my head:
Pinch the keyboard to get this:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
You can then move the floating and split keyboards by pushing and holding with 2 fingers.
Press and hold the settings key on the keyboard and select the T icon to switch to handwriting recognition mode.
In the keyboard settings, select "continuous input" for Swype-like functionality.
Feel free to add anything else you might find useful!

Any clue how I could force the keyboard to appear ?
Background of my question is that "Logmein" desktop -version works nicely in stock browser, chrome and opera but I can' t call up he keyboard once I want to type on the remote pc .......
Just found this out: the screen turns on when you pull the pen out.

Had no idea of the swipe style option available on the keyboard...
Here's a video of tips and tricks I've just whipped up. -> http://youtu.be/tC7z5PCdGLE
This is what I've discovered so far: smart stay, motion gestures, keyboard layouts (displayed by OP), handwriting input, nav keys extra functions, S Pen button, mini apps, screenshot key alternate uses and a demonstration of power, four apps running at the same time all of them shown on the screen at once!
Seems the more I learn about this tablet the more I like it. I had removed all of the Sammyware, but now I've out a few things back. Great thread.
Nice feature: Lock screen can be shut off completely ......... very handy when You work with N10.1 the entire day
BTW: stil no one has a clue how to force the keyboard to pop up in browser ?

I am also wondering if it's possible to do this with the keyboard, if you find something, please keep us updated! Thanks
For a keyboard to pop up it needs to have an input field. it will be useless if you pop it up without anything listening to the keyboard.

Well I have this situation where I need to press F12 to change to another page, but no input field in the page by itself. I tried clicking on the address bar to open the keyboard, but since the focus is not at the right place, it's not working. So I have a situation where it is NOT useless.
I don't know what troed wants to accomplish though.

Didn't find where you can shut it off for the whole day. Info, please?
16:10 ratio movie will take up the entire screen in the stock video player - it'll hide the controlls and display edge to,edge.

I'm curious as well. I hate lock screens, they don't seem to have any use to me, especially on a tablet. This thing can't turn on in my pocket, I don't wear clown pants(assuming clown pants have giant clown pockets). I just installed the "No Lock" app which does the trick.

Thanks. More info, please. Already looked there. Maybe my contacts are dirty.
Anyone know if there is any way to go immediately to Google bookmarks in the stock browser instead of local?

"None" should be the very last option in the screen lock page.
Nice. Thanks. Yup, seems I need wipers for my contacts.
Here we go in German settings (see attachment)
Why I need the keyboard to be opened even if there is no "call it to screen" input field:
I use "logmein" now for a couple of years for only one reason: to check my patients data base in my clinic.
Once I'm logged in and the remote screen appears I can click the icons to start the program but once I want to type a name ton the remote PC he keyboard does not appear.
Of course there would be other solutions, but I tried Splashtop Remote and other similar apps which do not work since my provider protects my clinic from outside intrusion by a firewall and even after my provider opened the ports necessary to run Splashtop Remote it does not work. After testing a lot of apps in the last two years with my SGSII/III and Note LOGMEIN is the only procedure that works. Of course I could buy the Android app Logmein ignition but look at the rating of this app, the prize and comments that it works very poor if at all. And why should I buy an app when my magnificent Note10.1 can do the same with it's browser ?IF I COULD FORCE THE KEYBOARD TO APPEAR ON THE SCREEN TO TYPE ON MY REMOTE PC !!!!!!!!

Great app, I really love it!
Working excelent in xTraSmooth.
Update 1.0.2
root is no longer asked during boot but its now only asked when needed by doing this you no longer need to select enable su during boot in superSU
I understand you want people to buy the full version but there seems to be no indication of what the default settings are and no way to find out so Im just swiping randomly to see what happens. Good luck ?
---------- Post added at 10:12 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:09 AM ----------
There should also be some sort of visual demonstration of where to swipe on screen before leaving your app menu. On my tablet in landscape swipes are working but in portrait I can't seem to swipe anywhere?

ill be adding help and demonstrations into the next update
for now ill tell you what the default settings are
left edge swipe up = search
left swipe up = back
center swipe up = home
right swipe up = recents
right edge swipe up = menu
two finger swipe up = none
three finger swipe up = none
four finger swipe up = none
in portrait gestures should be from the bottom
in landscape gestures should be on the right
i don't own a tablet so i have not had the chance to test on a tablet
does your tablet have a status bar at the bottom that could conflict with the gestures ill add a option so you can pick what side you want the gestures to be on
Update 1.0.3
Added help
Added alpha settings
Added option to swipe from right side
Bug fixes
Awesome
Was using GMD gesture control for years since 4.0 and it is currently not supported in 5.0.....this app made my day.....though i was also using 'All in one gesture' app recently.....i find this simple and easy as its pre configured. Keep it up....will buy the paid version once more gestures are added. thanks

İ also was using all in one gestures but could not have it 100% how i wanted it to be so i made my own
I was not thinking about adding any more gestures i did not want to take more then 1 edge of the screen i could add somthing like L shape gestures but the only way i can think of implementing that will put a delay on normal gestures and i want the gestures to be as fast and responsive as posible maybe i could add angle swipes but i did not want to make it to complex i also was thiniking about a swipeing dock maybe i will implement that but im not 100% sure yet im trying to keep it light but now that im thinking about it a dock could be sexy
Nice app
Thanks for the response and that was me on google play store
My tablet has a navigation bar but as soon as I get the gestures set up I will be removing the nav bar as it's pretty annoying on a large tablet screen, having a huge line at the bottom of the screen for just 3 small buttons!

1.0.3 should work better for you
if you increase the alpha you can see where the gesture gets activated so you know where to swipe
can you add someone post a video of someone using it? Might help with downloads and info... someone seeing in it in action
This is brilliant. This is the first non-intrusive nav bar replacement app solution I've found. For .64p it's very modest and should stay that way. Thank you for your help and nice simple app!
By the way, when in landscape, the swipes on the right-side should be labeled as top, middle and bottom, in conjunction with right, middle and left for portrait mode on the bottom-side. This way whether you're in landscape or portrait, the swipes stay in the same place [emoji12]
Hope this makes sense! [emoji106]

the code for disabling screen navitgations didnt work for me... ??
It's pretty good, I'm loving it. Great job. The only problem I have with it is that it takes some time to launch an app if it's set as a shortcut and it leads to making it feel unresponsive
"ok google" not working on home screen
i encountered this problem happening only when i am using this app "swipe navigation" otherwise the "ok google" is working from home screen.
please fix this asap ......................

ok its now doing the same with me and iv worked out why
****Edit 1
if you use the home swipe/key and try to launch a app just after you went home it will not work iv looked around found that i may need to add STOP_APP_SWITCHES permission to remove the delay lets see if that works
****Edit 2
OK i cant add the STOP_APP_SWITCHES permission unless its a system app so i need to try and find another workaround until then there will be a 5 second delay before you can press home and launch a app its a android security thing
****Edit 3
Woohoo worked out how to fix it and i did not have to do anything special instead of using the accessibility service to go home just used a intent and it no longer has the delay
