Noob has rooting questions about xperia play - Xperia Play General

Hi all im new to the forum and have a few questions about rooting my xperia play and wondered if some of you in the know could help?...
im interested in using gingerbreak v1.20 to do the root, i have read the tutorial and understand most of it and from what i have read on the forums other XP users have had varied success.
my questions are...
1. my phone is on a vodaphone contract and im not sure if its sim locked (to that specific network) and does this effect the root?
2. my phone had some kind of update downloaded to its software from vodaphone about 1 week ago gingerbread 2.3.2 build number 3.0.A.2.184 other people with this version root ok?
3. so just to clarify i was wondering if that update ive had has hindered my chances of the rooting also if my phone being locked to a specific network (e.g vodaphone) is a problem?
4. last but not least, if my phone fails to reboot after the rooting process, how hard is it to put it back to original version? (like do i need more software to fix the failure or can i just remove the battery wait 30secs and itll be back to normal)?
i know these may seem very basic questions to u veteran rooters, but id like to get involved i just wanna have more knowledge myself before i jump in, and would appreciate your feedback, loving my xperia play and i want to improve it and not brick it
cheers in advance

I am with tmobile and also received the ota update before I rooted.
SIM lock doesn't effect root.
I can tell you that the update won't effect running Gingerbreak at all.
You shouldn't have any worries using Gingerbreak as is.
It is purely an apk and will either successfully root your device or will not.
This is the easiest method of rooting i've ever used.
I was an android n00b when I got my hero & had to go through the method of creating a gold card & reverting to an older build & flashing flashrec!
To be honest, now my play is rooted in probably won't even bother using custom roms in the future.
I did all that with my hero and am happy with the plays UI.
I just wanted root to free up more space.
I'd also recommend researching setinstalllocation2 on here.
Doing this natively installs everything to sd and is worth the time.

cheers for the speedy reply DeadlyDazza, yeah id like to remove some of the stock rubbish to free up some space i was also hoping to do a small overclock, is this possible with a basic root? using the android overclocking apps?
im still nervous about the reboot and it not coming back on :S

@DeadlyDazza did you use gingerbreak on an empty/formatted sd card like described in the tutorial or does it also work with a sd full of installed apps? ( i really dont want to delete all my apps and data)
cheers covux

I have a fair bit of installing custom Roms on Android phones and i can honestly say this -
Unless you are rooting the phone in order to help develop custom roms and tweaks there really is no point in rooting it at the current moment.
Gingerbread is excellent at managing apps and the Xperia Play is designed so that games run independently from your homescreen.
"Trimming the fat" will offer almost zero benefit at the moment.
My advice is to wait a while, let the experts put together some custom Roms and gain access to the Kernel, allowing us to overclock.
Until then, i do not see a reason to root at all.

Unless you just, like me, wants to get rid of bloatware and ads in various apps and other benefits with root access
+1 on liking the XP UI and don't want to flash and mod this phone as I did with my HTC desire hd
If you just want that, root it now and keep your locked bootloader and enjoy the XP as it is
Regards Dousan...

Rooting does have many benefits, which mine was to free up more space on a device that, although is designed for gamers, seems to fall very short of.
Also to use root enabled apps such as cache mate.
Apart from the space issues, which have now been resolved by rooting & setinstalllocation2, I'm more than happy with my Xperia Play.
Will I be saying the same in 6 months? Probably not, I'll probably be wanting a fresher feel.
But that depends on how much support SE give the Play (my last device was the Hero & HTC was very slow with their support).
In answer to the question about running Gingerbreak with blank sd.
I had a spare 8gig that I formatted & used.
I didn't want to risk losing any data & couldn't be bothered to back up the 14gig on my card.
Although I have heard a few people say that running Gingerbreak is completely safe & won't erase any data.

Didn't erase anything on my sdcard when I rooted my XP, would still recommend a backup before using gingerbreak I was just lazy and went ahead without doing a backup. Did one today...
Regards Dousan...

@DeadlyDazza, @Dousan thanks for the info, i think i will also use a spare blank sd.

How exactly?
Whenever I navigate home away from a running game (such as to check a text) my XP shuts down the game.

I read in one of the reviews/specs for the phone that the homescreen and gaming operate independently meaning that when you play games, the homescreen sits in another part of memory or works in another processing thread or something.
The point being made was that whatever app you have open in the homescreen, won't make your games stutter or lag when you are playing them.
Maybe an expert can clarify this.
As for your problem, i can say that something is wrong with your setup for your games to be unloaded out of memory and shutdown when you navigate to the homescreen.
I would imagine you have an appkiller that is setup to close all running apps when you navigate to the homescreen.
I can't stress the importance of not using app killers with the gingerbread o/s. They are not needed, they will not improve performance of the phone, they will not make you battery last longer.
In fact, app killers will make your battery last SHORTER on gingerbread, since you will be using alot more processing power to load and unload them.

I don't use any app-killers.

Do you navigate to your homescreen with the back button, the home button or holding the home button and selecting a new icon?

Ok I have just performed 3 tests.
1) Emulator test - had tiger genesis running playing sonic 2. Hit the home button and navigated instantly to home screen. Tiger genesis happily sits in the notification bar. Navigating back to tiger genesis sees it exactly as before I left it.
2) Playstation pocket game crash bandicoot - loaded the game and hit the hom
e key. Same as above. The game sits in the notification bar and returns to the exact state you left it in when you return back to it.
3) Xperia play game Backstab - loaded the game and hit the home key. The game did not sit in they notification bar, but reselecting the game from the xperia play menu put the game onscreen at the exact position I left it from.
I can not re-create your situation where navigating to the homescreen makes the game unload from memory.
I made his post on my xperia play btw and performed each test while making this post. My browser doesn' t even unload from memory.

Usually just by tapping the home button. I only hold home for hotswitching & only navigate back to quit.

So does it only happen with a certain game? All games?
What about apps?
I find it hard to believe that hitting the home key unloads anything from memory unless you have changed some major settings.

Using Xperia Play games.
If I go to home when playing or paused the game unloads.
Not changed any settings at all.

Ok try this and tell me what happens.
- Slide the phone open
- Load Bruce Lee
- Get into an actual fight
- Hit the home key
- Slide the phone down
- Slide the phone up
- Load Bruce Lee
After doing this, my game has paused, but is exactly where i left it. The game did not unload, and therefore did not reload. It was exactly as i left it.
If yours does not do the same, and you havn't changed any settings or are running any app killers, then i suggest you make sure you have the latest revision of firmware and try again.

Bruce Lee stays in memory ok.
Star Battalion & Dungeon Defenders quit as soon as you hit home.

I can confirm that Star Battalion stays in memory after i hit the home screen on my phone.
It shows identical behaviour as Bruce Lee.
When you hit home, and reload the game, the game has paused itself and when you unpause, the game is exaclty as when you left it.
Can't confirm Dungeon Defenders behavious since i do not own it.
If you continue experiencing problems, i would suggest you have faulty memory and request a handset replacement.

[Q] Very slow and laggy Legend

Hey.
I have Legend since few months and now I have a slight problem with it. It get so laggy sometimes that after I press END CALL after the call, I must wait 3-5 seconds sometimes for menu to get back to the desktop (during this time a contact photo is still on the screen. will factory reset help? it is happening also after a reboot after 1-2 hours. It is unbranded, unrooted, with the latest OTA update available in Europe.
next thing is that when the phone is laying still, and someone calls me, the ringtone gets muted after 1-2 seconds. can anyone help me with these?
What all applications have you installed on it ?
It could very well be some buggy application.

Very well, indeed.
I had similar problems with Desktop Visualizer and Launcher Pro for example. Having too many custom shortcuts and size-heavy images on the home screens caused my phone to slow down to a an unpleasent extent.
Well first of all launcher pro. But before it was flying. I have around 100megs free on Phone memory, some apps (before it was ok), few games biggest one is angry birds and that all. And widgets smoothcalendar, launch x pro and beautiful widgets.
Sent from my HTC Legend using Tapatalk
I don't think launcher pro is the culprit here.
But you might wanna check the widgets you' ve installed. Some of them could be clogging the resources.
Try backing up all your apps, uninstall third party stuff one by one and see if they're is any difference.
If you have root (soft root is enough) you could use titanium backup app (free) from market. It'll make the job of backing up and restoring your apps a breaze (including the data and preferences)
I forgot about Skype which is also bigger than other apps. And of course im using advance task killer - maybe that is the problem?
I dont have a root im waitin for official friggin froyo from htc, then im gonna root for sure.. I h8 Sense but its clock app and dialer is unreplaceable.
is there any fast way to root legend without goldcard? (i think I read somewhere that goldcard is only required for branded devices - am i right?)
You could try removing apps one by one and see their effect.
I personally use system panel (purchased, not the free one) installed which enables you to monitor battery/cpu usage. That does help me in identifying stealthy apps which just sits there and consume the resources.
You can do soft root without going through all those lengthy rooting procedure.
You could try modaco visionary, did work for me. use the temp root option to have soft root. and you'll have root till you reboot.
http://android.modaco.com/content/h...m/320722/19-nov-r14-visionary-one-click-root/
rooting is not persistent throughout reboots, so you'll have to use the app every time after you reboot if you need root again.
I used this guide to root my legend and install a froyo rom. it was kind of easy, even creating the gold card was simple.
http://bandla.wordpress.com/2010/09/18/htc-legend-guide-to-rooting-and-installing-froyo-rom/
If you indeed go ahead with it, just make sure to insert the created gold card before running the file
RUU_Legend_HTC_WWE_1.31.405.5_R_Radio_47.26.35.04_ 7.05.35.26L_release_126592_signed.exe
when they say that in the guide.
for the backup using titanium backup, soft root is enough for you.
ok I will try it.. thanks for help, I hope that it will solve my problem

Iwant to throw my archos 70 out of the window

Hello everyone
I have been a loyal archos user for a year now, first with the a5IT and now the 70 internet tablet. As form factor I love the Archos 70 internet tab but the software is killing me it is so slow, what can I do to make it fast again?

What in particular is slow?
If scrolling home screens is slow, or icons are taking time to show up (or refresh) try a different launcher than the default. Popular ones lately have been Go Launcher, ADW.Launcher, and Zeam.
Are you using the most recent firmware update? (2.0.71 has sped the systems up quite a bit from the older versions)
http://www.archos.com/support/support_tech/updates.html?country=us&lang=en&#firm
Are you using an SD card? (If so try adding a file named .nomedia to the card to reduce the gallery from spending time scanning).
Did you install Google Voice? (If not, you should refrain from it since, it is dragging down a lot of systems).
What speed (in settings) do you have your processor set to run. (The most responsive is the Overdrive setting).
If you want to know how to speed your system up you'll need to tell us what is slow about it.
The overall system is getting really unresponsive and what bugs me the most is when I try to install any app through .apk the device fails on me and freezes. Basically when I try to instal any app it freezez when I try to use an app it freezes most of the time
I am using the latest update with the middle setting for power but overdrive doesn't make a big difference. I am running adw launcher which helped and is really good compared to the stock launcher.
The device freezes a lot and thats not because of me having a lot of apps when I get home I will try reinstalling the update keeping the device on overdrive for a long time and will report back

i would do a reset. it really is not as bad as it sounds.
market will tie your purchases to your account, just power off, hold vol-down and power up. choose reset, and then reset device( i do & storage). make sure firmware is 2.0.71, and install gapps5. then just watch what you install, and uninstall things you don't use.
Yeah, it sounds like you need to do a full reinitialization and then reinstall the newest firmware.
My A70 was literally not usable after I tried to upgrade. It was freezing every minute. After a reinstall, everything works great.
And don't forget to set your CPU to overdrive. Really doesn't affect battery too much, and the speed is noticeable.
I turned off the animated live wallpaper. Made my 101 noticable faster.
Deinstall VoiceSearch
You should deinstall the updates of VoiceSearch ....
thanks guys I did a full reinitiolization (not sure bout spelling) and now it is working better, i chose not to install the market and just use applanet for what i want to download, working good now but we'll see how it ends up after a few days of use.
thanks guys you were really helpfull.
dont know if the contents of your memory were wiped with your full reinitialization but i have noticed that every time i install an app i get the little pop up saying that the device is updating its library. this would explain why it would appear to grind to a halt when you install anything

the contents of my memory card did get wiped and i've noticed the less things in the internal memory the better. this is because archos did not partition the internal memory for the users the should have left maybe 2gb for the system and apps and the rest for us to use like what is on the galaxy s, that is what mae the device not lag.

I had the same issue. I had a photo app syncing online and it downloaded 30,000 thumbnails. That with the screwy "update multimedia library" really brought the 70IT to a halt. It would "sync" for about 1 hour leaving about 75% battery left.
I reinitialized and installed gapps4archos v5 with only the market and gmail (no voice or maps) and it's flying now. I wish I could disable the multimedia library sync permanently.

[Q] Lagging

A few days ago i noticed some not so smooth scrolling when in my calls log. So i thought the phone had been on too long and did a reboot (which solved the scroll lag).
After the boot. I went into the menu and most of my apps had disappeared (i think mainly on my sd). After a minute or two they appeared (out of order and all on the last menu ) so im guessing it was the sd card (which is the standard class 2 i think which came with the phone) My sd has like 12gb free still. And i only have like 25 apps/games. Anybody noticed similar things? And would upgrading my sd to a higher class slove the prob?
I also noticed that when my phone is on standby and i open the game pad without unlocking the phone (takes 20 secs maybe to launch) then press the back or home button. The 4 quick links next to the menu icon have no icons just blank sqaures for a 10 seconds or so. The same if i open the menu a few icons are the blank ones then they appear. Is this the same for other people?
I never noticed this problem before. And its bugging me. The phone is not rooted, uses the standard wallpaper. And only i have google search on the main screen no widgets. Any suggestions? Im gonna try a reset but thought i would see if other people had any similar experiences. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated
What you are probably seeing here is Android's garbage collection system in place. Basically, when apps need memory, the OS will transparently kill apps that aren't in use without telling you. Generally, the user shouldn't really notice it... but things like your apps not all showing right away is normal when the home app is starting back up after having been killed previously. Things that are relatively resource intensive, such as the Playstation emulator built into the Xperia Play, will most likely cause all other apps that are non-essential to be killed.
I don't know if you've used other Android phones before, but it's pretty normal.
Yeah this is my first android phone . Suppose if its pretty normal i will get used to it in time. Maybe i will unroot the phone and remove all the crap and see if that makes it any better. Thanks for the reply btw

what launcher are you using? if you use launcher pro, there is a "system persistant option" this means it will not kill your launcher in the background, and the apps disapearing issue should not happen

Im just using the standard play UI. Thinking of trying Launcher Pro or GO Launcher EX. If i unlock my phone before opening the game pad the icons are there. Also if i give my phone 20-30 secs after rebooting my apps are where i left them. So i guess i need to have more patience lol

[help] Make me LIGHTWEIGHT.

Hello, As you all probably know the space for install files, basic settings etc is an issue for the Xperia PLAY; Other, newer phones out there have better space for installing applications, settings and images.
I use my phone for everyday use, along side another (X-Play) for my work life, (I love seeing peoples faces when they realise (If I can paraphrase) "I can haz games Consoole") I use my main phone, which in this instance is from herein "Phone-A" for every purpose from listening to music whilst jogging/at the gym, Texting, calling, "pinging" on various chat programs, editing documents, looking at pictures, surfing the net to Games and even occasionally taking photos.
Phone-B however is used solely used for making phone calls, emails and texting. Which Isn't much of an issue as its solely used for Work. I replaced that dreaded Wildfire when I had the funds, thank god.
My issue is that on Phone-A I'm having "Insufficient space!" messages almost EVERY SINGLE DAY. I've done everything I can bar deleting apps that I Use on a regular basis (Games, Music player etc) heres a list of the applications installed below;
ROOTED, 16GB Card
Homescreen - Nemus Launcher - 2.73Mb
Games -
SIMS 3
BRUCE LEE
CRASH BANDICOOT
BIA2
MODERNCOMBAT2
DRAG RACING
BIA2 FREE HD+ (??)
GT FREE+ HD
BLOOD AND GLORY
R6 HD
BFBC2
ASPHALT 6
NFS HOT PURSUIT
GTA3 10YR HD
ZOMBIEVILLE
MINECRAFT
Music - MIXZING - 8.11Mb
Web - DOLPHIN HD - 11.94Mb
I'm Rooted and not afraid to use it, if you can let me know of some files and applications to remove (Preferably non of the games, apart from GT,ZOMBIEVILLE & BIA) I don't mind doing it.
If you can also give me an alternative to the home screen, music player and webbrowser which are lightweight and yet still have full functionality that would be great! Music is a big part of my life, headphones go everywhere with my (I travel alot) I spend alot of time in the desert (Afg'n, iRagg) so these phones are sturdy and yet still VERY powerful in there capabilities.
I know theres alot of games but Hey, its a gaming phone why not game on it?
I have however removed some pre-installed crap that came on it but now I'm looking to lightweight my kit as I do my full kit when I'm working (I work in Close Protection, so a good phone is essential )

For the love of God, man... move them ****s to SD!
Also learn basic ADB navigation so you can move more to your SD card with the setInstallLocation 2 command.
Then check out THIS SAFE LIST so you can debloat your phone.
Do you have 2.3.3? If so, ditch that **** for 2.3.4. It's a difference as drastic as having a base of 250MB compared to 2.3.3's 180MB. It saves you a lot of pain in the ass dalvik-cache insanity, and FTF installers are too easy to use to take any BS.
With this checklist knocked out:
• Get FW 2.3.4
• ADB setInstallLocation 2
• Root
• Debloat
I've been able to cram 205 apps on this puny 400MB internal storage phone, and still have 140MB left.
Holy God damn, i'm running 2.3.2 I didnt even check :/
I just downloaded ZEAM which is 325Kb, which I'm happy with. But the above listed files, err Dolphin and Mixzing.. Err that is on Card!
I've DEBLOATED, Rooted but what is this ADB setinstall2? Is it moving apps from Phone to SD, like I can do in SuperManager?
If I update to 2.3.4 will I loose root?

ADB setinstall2 moves apps to SD automatically when installing i think
You will lose root if you use flashtool to update but OTA (over the air) you wont, even if you do lose root you can get it back easily using superoneclick
If your so worried about space why don't you partition 1gb off the card and use that for apps using Link2SD from the market, that saves phone memory and you'll never have to worry about space error messages again
I'll do a partition in a while, but at the moment I'm doing an OTA update.
I just had a Sh*t scare, looked down at my phone (On charge) and the blue update bar had disapeered and then the screen went black. Its back now though..
I always go with OTA, never touch flashtools unless I know what I'm truely doing (Give me a games console or PC any day!!)
Right so I've tried 3 times now Im getting a "Software could not update" message and its still not doing F'all So im stuck on 2.3.2 untill I can figure out why...
You probably deleted a system app/file. It won't update if that's the case. Just use flashtool. Get the .42 firmware put it in the firmware folder in flash tool, put phone into flash mode, flash, done. Easy
I ended up using the official Sony companion thingy bob, one word for this situation.
SNAFU.
Lost ROOT, added all sorts of crap included FIFA, star battalion, support etc ahhhh FUBAR.
Flash tool it is then if it can root..
EDIT:: I CAN HAZ R00T! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312859, done done done! Thanks, Cool guys
Well done, pat on the back
Gratz to figuring it out. However, all this could be avoided in the future if n00bs would actually check out the threads already posted to see what options they have before posting. Just sayin'.

[Q] Greetings and a couple of questions

First of all I'd like to introduce myself, my name is Nemanja, I'm from Bosnia, 17 years old, been following the forums for a while now but never really had the need to register because I didn't have a Android Smartphone, but now I do, and it's the GT 540, so I am hoping for some good conversations and a lot of nice informations about this phone (already found some neat stuff). Greetings once more.
Now, to some questions.
1. I'm pretty pleased with the phones speed taking into consideration it's outdated, but I'm wondering are there any tweaks to make it a lil' bit or a lil' bit more faster?
2. When I got the phone from my friend, we did a Factory Reset to delete all of his accounts connected to the phone, but the Android Market doesn't work, it crashes right on startup, which sucks, is there a way of fixing this?
3. I want to upgrade to CM7 but I'm totally clueless if I should because the Volume (-) button is not responding, only the Volume (+) button is working, I don't know if that should be a problem because of fastboot, recovery or something like that.
That's all I have to ask now, maybe I'll remember something later on.
Cheers and thanks in advance! :fingers-crossed:

Well, compared to my 2.1 stock Eclair I have way more RAM when I kill apps, sometimes even up to 77MB but mostly around 55 - 60MB, battery life is kinda good, I really can't tell because I'm always listening to music and surfing the web, but the phone never froze on me.
Only issue I've come across is the Facebook app being way to slow, but when browsing facebook in the stock Browser it works like a charm. So far the ROM is excellent, no crashes, stable, fast, lots of options, standard root, I would recommend it any day!
About games and the swap thing, I'm new to the android world so I don't really know what swap actually does but I didn't download any games yet, so I can't give you an answer to that question

ok let me explain swap in a few words
Swap creates a file in ur sdcard, and uses the allocated space as memory.
swap files do inded decrease ur sdcard life, people say after 2 years of swapping sd card goes dead
another way to use swap
is to format ur sd card into 2 partitions, 1 fat 32 for ur files and the other for swap
basicly swap increases ur phone memory
back in the day i wanted to play dungeon defender on lg gt540 but it needed a phone with 512 ram, so i created a swap file with 450 mb and ran it no problems, altho it ws a bit over clocked not much over 700 otherwise its gonna fc on you or SOD, either way overlcocking reduces ur cpu life , one thing u can also do to improve graphics its 16 bit transparency, but it might get some glitches if it gets ''overflooded''
hope that helps
in sort, ur best option is
format sd card into 2 and make one part ur swap
overclock to 704mhz
16bit transparency
disable stuff on ur phone such as facebook google drive, task killes (use native) also dont use swift key or any other keyboard
