Just got Continuum....tips, tricks? - Continuum General

So I upgraded to a Continuum last week and have been playing with it. For awhile I thought I had a i9000 Galaxy LOL but I figured it out. Anyway I see from the threads here that there isn't alot of development for this rig. Ugh. So what can I do with it? I saw something about a "de-bloat". Any tips would be appreciated.
And a quick question: Does this rig have a true standalone GPS chipset in it?

adrynalyne and imnuts are developing for this phone...in fact i think imnuts has a .32 kernel booting (dont know how functional it is though)
however froyo ota and source coming out would most likely be of the most use
as i cant imagine that putting time into working with eclair stuff only to have that all wiped out soon would worthwhile
just "hold tight"

The Froyo kernel is booting on the Continuum, but it isn't very usable atm, and the latest test doesn't work at all. I have gotten CWM fixed, and hope to get some more work done soon, but as nitsuj said, we don't want to put to much effort into Eclair when Froyo is likely coming out soon.

so whats next for our hero's?

are we waiting on the official 2.1 to be released to get more fully functioning roms?
do you guys see more apps and themes being made for our cdma heros in the near future?
id love one day to see as many options on the cdma versions as they have for gsm.
any thoughts or input on this guys? what would you like to see?
maybe even the possibility of porting webos or maybe even winmo to our phones? i don't see why not as winmo can port android. it's not on the top of my list but it would be cool to play with.
Dude. You start a lot of threads man lol. But yeah, Android 1.5 was made for GSM, and HTC had to do some crazy wackjob stuff to make it work for CDMA. Android 1.6 started including CDMA support, and Android will continue to support CDMA from 1.6 on out. So basically, once 2.1 comes out officially, I believe we will be in business. You should just chill out a little bit about the whole being bored and what's gonna happen stuff, and just enjoy your device. The HERO is a great phone, and it's only gonna get better!

yeah but i like to discuss, hence why we are on a forum.
Haha.. Yeah think it would be kinda cool to have WinMo on our phones, too; although I doubt I would use it for more than a day or two. Our Devs are seriously working hard getting the DEV-ROMs working and they're doing a ****ing great job. I can't wait to see what comes after the official update!!!
So... this might be a stupid question, but exactly what are we looking to see in the 2.1? I don't have any problems with my phone now, a little laggy and short battery life but I plan to get a new battery on payday. So, what is so great that people are actually talking about unrooting to go to the Official 2.1? I wouldn't unroot for anything they could possibly put in there. What if I'm at a friends and need internet and he doesn't have any? I gotta be able to tether. i can always use PDAnet, but its just not the same. And no longer being able to control the CPU, etc. And I love flashing all the new roms that come out and experimenting with the awesome stuff the Devs crank out, so really what is gonna be so awesome about 2.1?
i actually saw a guy on here with a pic of his hero with winmob 7 on his hero...don't know if it was legit or not, but nice to see

Because when Sprint releases 2.1, then our devs will be able to take all the amazing-ness from 2.1 and combine it with the amazing-ness of having root access! Until then, we're just using hacks and leaks to get what we can get.

And we'll have the actual kernel instead of stuff with backported drivers.
well to me 2.1 was the holy grail until today.
The Dream rom has Flash 10.1, so its my new holy grail.
Oh, I agree totally that it will be awesome when the devs get their hands on all the 2.1 stuff, but what about the people talking about unrooting for the official upgrade? I guess what I'm really asking is...what amazing-ness? What are we waiting for? Will the phone make us breakfast in the morning and grab beer for us once we get 2.1? I'm in here every day like the rest, checking for updates on 2.1 status and waiting impatiently for the release, but again I ask..what am I waiting for? More speed? Less bloatware? Bug fixes? I'm just curious, I know that going from 1.29 to 1.56 fixed the massive lag when going from portrait to landscape and the original MMS issue, etc. But I really didn't notcie a diff in my phone after the upgrade. Seriously, what are we looking for in this new update?

Official .29 kernel or not. I bet once camera is backported most devs will use the modded .27 kernel to optimise their builds until .29 source is released. The main things we will get from the official release is the frameworks, a few and apks to allow for all of Sprints stuff to work. And I've almost managed that already but yeah other advantages of 2.1 are vwp, better frameworks, better opengl, better apps, UIs, and a better os all together. I know ill make sure the build is ready for all the root users on day one. If its not already leaked by then.
let's hope for a HERO200 leak then!
come on single unruly mischevious HTC employee....if you do this, then we promise we won't bother you like we did to get the source code..

As soon as i flashed the latest(old now) regaw, i got the rebootloop while plugged in deal. I just flashed back to my previous rom. I would rather not post and make devs look bad. Those are not my intentions, and judging by the numbers i figured it was most likely just me. But the whole popular rom thing is kind of starting to remind me of my iphone consumer theory(everyone else has one, so i want one too). So maybe even if flawwed, since 5000000 other ppl dl it then others who follow the popular vote will most likely feel compelled to follow suit. Dont be a sheep, test for yourself or just mod your own like ive always done as common logic.
I'm sorry to hear you guys are having such trouble with it. I've never heard of anyone not being able to get into the settings menu
Regaw is also my favorite because of it's combination of being super responsive and very stable. I've assembled a rom mod based on regawmod for my hero owning friends and family, I'll just say it's stable enough I have my girl running it although there's no reason it should run any different than RM2.1. If you guys want to give it a try shoot me a pm.
Wish I could be more help, I've just had very little trouble with RegawMOD.
regaw is my favorite because of the stability(over other roms), how heavily themed it is, and the direct support i get from the dev himself.
a fresh wipe and reflash has always fixed any issue ive ever had. but ill wait until next release. treve is emerging with some pretty promising things too.

2.2 on Vibrant Yet?

I want to switch from a N1, but I don't see any custom roms w/ 2.2 yet... Any guess as to an eta? Thanks
They have only just started development on CM6 for the Vibrant and I haven't seen anything about anyone working on 2.2 yet.
Development progress is located: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=729364
CM6 is 2.2... and there is never really an ETA, when it's done.. its done.
Yeah they are just slowly starting, as they are finishing up the worlk on the slide still.
Did you read the sticky attached to this sub forum?
always remember that one of cyans rules are to never ask the eta =)

And it doesnt matter if the phone works "fine" on 2.1, it'll work 20000x (okay exaggerated) better because of JIT, Adobe Flash Player and all of the other features added

Cause its fascinating, otherwise, whats the purpose of being on these forums? I've been flashing bleeding edge stuff for years!
I dig touch wiz, didn't think I would. Just replaced launcher with adw, and goodnto go. Samsung music app with 5.1 surround and Eq is really neat, love it. Messaging is awesome looking, but if you're texting lots of people, it starts to lag and bad. That's my only complaint here.
Rule number 1, you don't talk about ETAs.
Rule number 2, you do not talk about ETAs!
Rule number 3 questions go in the general question area.
Rule number 4 CM6 will be at the top of the development folder once its good to go, the phone has been in the CM dev's hands for a whole day now, relax, and keep an eye out, I guarantee it'll be waiting for you.

because thats how you get a thing called progress. can you imagine if everyone in history had that train of thought?
First step is a bootloader for rom backup and restore.
That seems to be done, people say its stable, so after enough people play with that, I'd expect the roms to flow.
I see custom kernels already discussed, so I'd expect new full roms to show up by next weekend.

Your expectations are very high.
I only say this because a custom recovery was never needed for custom roms. You can throw custom roms on the phone with odin. So a custom recovery doesn't mean much.

hah, good question. I'll cover the basics you can do the rest of the research, essentially CM6 is a customer Rom, (stands for Cyanogenmod version 6) for android devices. You can learn more by visiting cyanogenmod.com
<opinion>
Also, cyanogenmod would happen to be my favorite custom rom, a lot of extra features are included, its pretty well optimized and you can expect updates often. I've personally used Cyanogen on the Mytouch and Nexus one, and I can't wait to see a version on the Vibrant, once an official stable version comes out, you can probably expect Android 2.2 and a lot of optimizations that would may the vibrant what it should have been on launch day.
</opinion>
Also I hate to throw this in, being a fairly new poster and all (and not being a mod) but I believe that this thread would belong in the vibrant general forum as opposed to the dev forum. Just a heads up so you don't get flamed in the future

Helpful post, alludes to something I remember mentioning
@andershizzle: if you do decide on running any roms such as CM6, the best tip that can be offered is to make sure you understand what you are doing and read any instructions carefully before you proceed, and make sure you understand the instructions too. Remember to ask for help before doing something that might turn your phone into a $500 paperweight (or in the vibrants case its more of an expensive decoration since I wouldn't trust it to hold down paper. It'd probably blow away too.)

Not being a 'nit-picker', but CM6 uses 2.2 (froyo). CM5 is 2.1 (eclair) and CM4 was 1.6 (donut). Hmm....now I'm getting hungry.
But yes, I'm definitely looking forward to see CM6 on the Vibrant. Only downside is it will look like the stock CM6 (meaning our Vibrant png's will be replaced ).
Guess I might start working on the replacement Vibrant theme.

When I'd made the decision to move from my N1 to Vibrant, I was all excited to find out there was going to be a CM for Vibrant. Now, I don't care so much. Vibrant has so many things I was already replacing that it's cut down on my apps somewhat.
I got into rooting for App2SD, and with my Vibrant it just isn't necessary now to run a custom rom. I will miss the undervolting and overclocking, though I sort of hope someone will work on kernels which will work with the stock build. I did a simple root just to use my root apps. Otherwise, Vibrant is pretty good for me.
BTW, this isn't any sort of anti CM post ... I love the work he and his cronies do, and some times I hope that they'll get snapped up by one of the big guys out there. They should be making bank for their talents.
Well I feel like an idiot for posting in the Dev section. Accident. Lmao.
Anyways I've flashed ROMs on a Touch Pro 2 (WinMo *cough*terrible) before so I'm decently familiar with that.
Is CM6 like, Stock 2.2? I'm looking for a stock-as-possible ROM, is that what I should be getting?

It's not speculation. There is active development for the Vibrant going on. It's just not far along enough yet for an experimental release.
You can follow wesgarner and scepterr on Twitter for the latest updates since they're heading the Vibrant branch. Wes is primarily focused on the MT3G Slide a the moment though since he promised to work on that one first and it's farther along, but he has also been actively working on the Vibrant too.
I just want CM6 on Vibrant to see Wes work his hiney off
No, not really. But I know he will.
The CM team adds a year to our gadgets. All I really want is to get rid of the stinky calendar app right now, and I can do that without CM6 (4,5 or 7, whatever). In eight months, though, when 1.5 or 2gH processors are selling, some ingenious JIT tweak revolutionizes speed, and/or the size of Google Earth becomes more commonplace, I'm going to want CM. I'm going to want it to be in its ruts, hashed & rehashed. Im not necessarily expecting it, but I sure am gonna want it, and be grateful if it's there for me and my old phone.
The CM team is also willing to try new stuff, and can get a load of people to test it. So Apps2SD started where? Got popular how? It's stock now?
CM is open source, and has got a lot of people using and understanding what open source is. The social aspect of software is all too often misunderstood, or just plain dismissed. XDA-developers has revolutionized software as we know it. We'd all be spoon fed M$ users without this site, and possilby without CM specifically. These guys will be in software history textbooks.
So, I'm working donations into my budget. I'ts much cheaper than buying a new phone every few months, or putting up with stock software on old hardware. I will pay these guys as long as they're willing to work their magic.
(By the way, every once is a while I crack out my old Tmo MDA, just for kicks for a few hours. It works beautifully thanks to a custom ROM. Thinking about giving it to my Mom just so she can have a Tmo "smartphone." I love XDA. I love open source, even when it's not exactly.)

Leaked 2.3 ROM FOR i9000 GALAXY S

well even if not at least we know now that Samsung wasn't lying about March for the euro/Asian markets.
Nice, hopefully we will be able to use this to our advantage?
Also, couldn't we flash this since we now have the kernel that allow us to flash i900 ROMS? If we could just flash those files, then flash the kernel through Odin somehow it might work. Idk though, I'm no dev.

damb, this is so great, im thinking maybe tonight we might have a port for the vibrant, and i wonder if eugene and krylon know about this considering, it just today got leaked, a few hours ago.............. anyways, everyone post on this, lets get the hype going, we want this baby ported ASAP.. always thanks so much eugene and krylon, my brothers of galaxy android
So far from what i've read over there...
Looks like quadrant scores are not improved over 2.2 which is what i'm sure most people are hoping for. It also appears that the screen off animation is not present in the rom. It's also using Touchwiz 3.0 and not 4. Market is broken, and gingerbread keyboard also not included. Looks like an early beta build from what i've read.
**edit**
market is working, they have root access, and they are in the process of deodexing.
So far from what i've read over there...
damn double post. please delete
Sweet, hope we can get some cooked roms soon

The kernel that allows us to flash i9000 ROMs is only 2.2 and 2.2.1 compatible. I'm pretty sure someone would have to build a new kernel to let us flash that or port the ROM over.
The crowds are getting restless over there. They're in an uproar about "this is missing" and "that is missing". One of the complaints is about the gingerbread wallpaper being missing. But these guys forget that our 2.1 devices didn't come with stock 2.1 walls. They instead came with whatever wallpapers samsung gave us. Overall it's starting to sound more complete than the first froyo leaks that we used to have which is reassuring. Some of the guys say that the leak is stable and everything is working on their devices. One of the nice improvements they're reporting is functioning hardware acceleration.
