Defy got CM7 Port - Bravo General

These phones ARE NOT THAT DIFFERENT!
The Defy now has cm7 ported, and I'm just wondering how this can be fixed to work with the Bravo, or if it would even be possible. These phones are the same except for (what I've heard) 1) The carrier and 2) The different cameras
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1033654

They are very close to the same. Almost identical but the keyword is ALMOST. Until we can find away of getting the bootloader cracked or bypass the bootloader. We will have to wait. Bandroidx is working hard on his oc and custom recovery. The customer recovery is one of the first steps. We just need some more devs.
I am studying the x10 way of bypassing the bootloader and creating custom what you would call mirrors of roms. "were you find a nearly identical hardware take their custom rom change around alot of the interenal apks and settings to make it work. Usually this leads to problems that become even more of a headache. ( camera doesnt work, wifi doesnt work, gps doesnt work, etc).
Give it time. Hopefully I will get some free time to sit down and compare the 2 system dumps. Defy and Bravo and see how hard this is actually going to be.

Hopefully not very hard. The Defy used 2nd-init to get Cyanogen running on it. Locked bootloaders prevent kernals (correct me?) and not custom ROMS if using CWM. Hopefully we can make a halfway working port. I might just wana try flashing this to the Bravo just for the hell of it. You never know, and we have SBF, and now NANDroid.

HECKKKK YEA I"M JEALOUS!!! LOL I should buy the guy a Bravo and give pay for him an AT&T plan.

You can try to flash it. The other provlem that we face is hardware differences between the 2 phones. It is not extremely hard to mirror the Rom. It is just knowing which files to move around and the code the important files for the bravo.

[Q] Are people still working on the bootloader?

I am not really an Android expert or anything and I only read this forum, so I could be wrong here. It seems that there is not much news regarding the bootloader, but some people have posted that people are still working on it or believe that some people are getting close or whatever. Is this the best place to read about progress on the bootloader or is there another forum I should keep an eye on?
Thanks.
There is not much you can read, birdman is working on it with some people, so I guess you could follow birdman's twitter.

From the twitters of the guys working on the booatloader, it sounds like they are both giving up. birdman says he's giving up on the DX and moving on to other devices, though he also says AOSP is fully working sans camera for the D2 and the DX. nenolod had this to say about 8 hours ago as well "i am convinced that short of motorola coughing up their keys, the bootloader won't be unlocked. sorry "
Sounds like we are gunna be SOL on an unlocked bootloader, but at least the roms are coming along still

(disclaimer, I'm no expert on this stuff so be gentle, but here's my observations):
Bad news.... I'm not too worried about not the D2 not being able to be cracked, because there's more and more ROMs available, but this might set a bad example. I can't think of any other examples where the manufacturer created a locked down system that the people couldn't crack (phones, games, apps, etc etc). But then again, I'm no expert so feel free to prove me wrong.
I just don't like that it looks like (at this point) they (moto, verizon) will win. It worries me that they might expand on it and lock stuff down more for future devices....
The thing I'm most worried about is that we won't see Gingerbread until Motorola decides to launch an official Gingerbread update for the D2/DX (which will probably happen, but not for quite a while after Gingerbread launches).
The biggest drawback to the locked bootloader is no custom kernels. This doesn't matter much for Froyo, but the kernel version will be different for Gingerbread. It is possible that there will be features in Gingerbread that the Froyo kernel won't support.
angdroid and matt said on their new release of fission that they may have found a way

Custom ROMs

Who's attention do we need to get to start getting some love for custom roms on the bravo? I'm wondering if it would be relatively easy to accomplish given the hardware inside is pretty similar to the droid 2 and droid x. I believe it's identical minus clock speeds. Anyway, I would like some stock froyo or gingerbread on this baby to see it really shine. Not to mention 1-1.2GHz.
Yes please. That would be awesome.
Yea....
You know, guys, you cant just sit here and ask for custom ROMs and just hope it pops up somewhere. You have to help too! Make a system dumb of your Bravo and upload it to Mega Upload or something to start off helping...then go around to people and ask someone, for intense on the Defy form because the phones are similar, if they'll take your dump (yea sounds bad LOL) and make some sort of custom recovery out of it. WE NEED PEOPLES HELP if we plan to make this phone AWESOME .
Well, I have no idea how to go about doing that, but would be more than willing to work with people to get the info they need to help them. I'll do some searching on how to get the dump unless you have a link that outlines that sort of thing.
From what I'm seeing people just grab the /system/ directory? I'm in droid explorer but it doesn't seem to allow me to copy it. hmmmm
Ditto, would love to help get some roms for this thing, just need to get me to the right path and I am all over it. Not much of a coder but willing to try.
Have already installed android sdk and Eclipse on my system, total noob to Android.
Have you found out anything on system dump? Probably good palce to start.
YEP!
That is why it's called a system dump! So yea I know I've had that problem too, where it won't let you copy the /system. I recommend the DroidExplorer program.
www.de.codeplex.com/releases/view/50997
Works great for me, IDK if it'l work with the Bravo as good as my Flipout (busted my Bravo, but it's fixable with an SBF or a .ZIP) So anyways please let me know if that works so someone can start developing!
Link gave me server error will try it again later on.
Here's what I have found out so far;
Using Eclipse/ADT I can see my whole system from Eclipse Explorer and watch it as it's running. From here I can push and pull (adb) from here. I have would attach a screen shot but need to wait till I have such privileges.
I could start to actually make system changes from here, but that would be suicidal since I am still new at this.
What I would like to do is download, copy, maybe dd from terminal, not sure how to, my current device rom to an emulator so I can experiment with it (rather trash the emulator than my phone).
If anyone an help with this (haven't figured this out yet) would be of great help.
Also have not investigated yet but Motorola Clig, Shadow, XT800, Kobe (Bravo), Milestone, Droid 2, Droid Pro, and Defy are all OMAP 36XX processors so I am thinking roms from these could/maybe (use at own risk I AM NO EXPERT) work on the Bravo.
As soon as I figure out all the above I am still ignorant in (don't want to brick this phone) I will start experimenting with the roms.
Any help in these areas would be greatly appreciated as it would also be a major time saver, googling for what I have so (which isn't much far) has taken weeks.

This phone will get 2.2 soon, trust me on this! Once it does, someone will grab an SBF (a stock 2.2 Bravo SBF) for this. I think a main reason for this phone not being developed on is because none of these files necessary exist. Hopefully when 2.2 is released some one WILL get a hold of it, an update.zip, an SBF...I think the'll all work. So yea, just some good news. Oh, and don't ask how I know, I KNOW.
someone might already have their hands on the 2.2 update.zip.
I found in the market an app called "android dump". Does anyone know if that will do what we need it to do? And what is the steps we need to follow to get some support for this device? Just upload to media fire? I will go ahead and do that when I get a chance and post back gere when I have done so. anyone with additional instructions ios greatly appreciated.
Already done!
Just uploaded system dump to mediafire. In case you want to know how, just run adb and do the command pull /system.

the man is correct. almost had my hands on it.
If you guys are that close to it then surely you can get an SBF of 2.1??? pretty please?
I am porting Clockworkmod using Koush's bootstrap recovery and am close to a working test but am not willing to test it on my gf's unit without an SBF at this point, she just got it and she bought it on ebay so i am not sure if she will have warranty issues with at&t (probably)
so without and sbf i am looking for someone who has perhaps cracked their screen and is getting an insurance replacement, you can test my work and if it bricks your phone then no one is out anything, it will be sbf'ed at the factory anyways. even a warranty replacement is fine, but there is a little risk but i have never had problems with that. they just sbf the things. not boot them up and look for root lol. plus you already voided your warranty if you want to be techincal when you rooted

I work at att. The bravo is less then a year old so your gf is covered even if it was purchased from ebay. If you brick it just do the exchange by mail safer then in store.
What does the exchange cost because I got mine free as an upgrade phone and unless you have insurance it's my understanding that once the thirty day warranty is over it's all on you.

CM7 is already in development for the ARC and the PLAY, the devs are waiting for there test device as the rom they have now wont boot, one of the big problems atm is the play has no recovery partiton so the CM7 devs have had to include the recovery in the kernel. i think that within a couple of weeks it will be ready

However, the fact that there is a diversity of devices for the Play (R800 i/a/x etc) will mean the dev/maintainer for CM is going to have a bit of a hard time. That and R800x still hasn't been unlocked for boot (or rooted), however that may just take time. I know I've tried at least 7 different root exploits in the vain hope than any of them work on my VZW R800x . Without a way to properly back up the firmware, I don't dare do dangerous experiments in attempting to flash or unlock the bootloader.

Reason no to root on day 2 of contract?

Ok, this might be a MEGA noobish question, but i have never dealt with Android before so please bare with me XD
I have just (yesterday) got my Atrix on tmobile in the uk, an would like to root it to use Aura ROM to get the 2.3.4 features and general improvements it seems to bring, but is there any reason to wait any length of time?
Its my understanding that Android is completely OpenSource, so is rooting it voiding any warranty, or is it OK with carriers? I ask since tmobile offers a 14 day period to make sure im happy with the phone, and that it all works fine, which it seems to after my extensive playing/testing over the last 2 days, but if it does go wrong i wouldnt want to take it in, rooted, and have them say they cant help me.
any clearing up of this would be much appreciated!
You should wait until the return period is over before rooting it. This will give you time to make sure nothing is physically wrong with it. Rooting alone will not void your warranty. However, unlocking the boot loader will and you need to do that to load a custom recovery so that you can flash another ROM. An unlocked message will get displayed on the start up screen. Some carriers may not pay much attention to that when returning it. Motorola will most likely notice if you need to use the manufacturers warranty though.
Root will void your warranty, wait till the trial period is over just to be safe...

i got my phone from AT&T and rooted it as soon as i got home, a week later i ended up hard bricking my phone and went into the AT&T store and got it replaced for free. now, i did also pay for insurance on my phone so if anything happened to it (even if it's my fault) i'd get it replaced, but it seemed as if the representative had no clue what he was talking about. i was honest with them and everything and told him i was trying to unlock the phone when it happened, and he just kind of smiled and nodded and then pulled out a new phone out of the back. i asked how much i owed him, and he told me nothing.
point of the story is, i wouldn't worry about rooting the phone. it's possible that you won't be able to get it replaced, but chances are the rep you talk to either won't know what rooting is, or won't care. unlocking your bootloader though, i'd definitely wait a little while.
thanks, that is a good point though that people in the shop probably wont understand/care about rooting etc.
Though your reply, Alcapone, has confused me slightly i thought rooting and unlocking the bootloader were one and the same, but apparently not. could you please explain what is different, and is there any reason for me to root without unlocking the bootloader?
basically for now, since im on tmobile who seem quite slow at updating, i just want to get a way to put gingerbread on the phone. im ok with waiting 2 weeks for roms, but 2.3.4 i could do with now, if its possible, can that be done just by rooting?
many thanks

rooting your device is just giving it root access, so apps can access parts of the system that they normally couldn't. rooting is extremely easily, and reversible. there are multiple ways to do it, i would suggest either the one click root for all gingerbread devices here
or the preinstall method here
now, unlocking the bootloader is a lot different. it pretty much enables you to install custom firmware onto your device. you can install a custom recovery that allows you to install amazing ROMs such as CM7, Aura, Ninja, Alien, Red Pill, Homebase, etc. etc.
i'm still assuming you're on gingerbread, so unlocking your bootloader is a panicky process. you'll get a fake hard brick (0x1000 error), but all you have to do is boot into fastboot mode and type the command 'fastboot oem unlock'. you can find a really awesome script that will do it all for you here
now, unlocking the bootloader voids the warranty. it gives you a bit of text on your boot logo (the motorola screen) that says 'unlocked' and allows your carrier to know you voided the warranty. it's also irreversible, once unlocked always unlocked. so make your decision wisely
nevermind, just skimmed over your post again. my apologies, i misread a few parts originally, you'll need to unlock your device to install a custom ROM with gingerbread. you can unlock your device by flashing the .sbf files you can find in this thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1136261
thanks, so just to confirm, rooting alone wont allow me to update to 2.3.4? to be honest im not really to fussed about voiding warranty, it only lasts 2 weeks, and im away with no tmobile store even vaguely close for both of them plus i seem to be addicted to voiding the warranty on anything i buy by fiddling/overclocking asap, i cant help myself
i assume it is possible, if it does go wrong, to restore the phone to manufacturers settings and start again?

After you get the bootloader unlocked and cwm recovery installed going back to factory settings is as easy as installing a stock ROM. Which is pretty damn easy
And rooting alone isn't enough to get you gingerbread.

You can go to the ihop thread in the dev forum and use the Mac sbf flasher provided there. After that use the sbf that corresponds to your device. Flashing the wrong sbf can brick your device so maker sure you get the right one. Then boot into fastboot and use the fastboot OEM unlock command.
You can root as well on a Mac i'm sure, I just wouldn't know how. I'm guessing the preinstall method I linked would work.

The 2 weeks is a return window with tmobile. Motorola, and most vendors, offer a one year manufacturer warranty. That is the warranty you void when unlocking the boot loader. Just wanted to clarify that bit.
ah thanks, i guess motorola WOULD notice its unlocked then. after some reading i think i'll use CM7, seems less likely to kill the phone, right?
the phone is insured, i guess it would be covered by that if i bricked it for good? if not i could take a hammer to it and claim it was a 'terrible accident' XD

It doesnt want to work

hi,
I really don't know what to do..the only thing I want now is to throw this piece of **** out of my window and buy an iPhone.
I tried more then 5 different roms, many CM9(ICS) and now with CM10(JB- currently this one) and the same *ucking bugs occur at all of these versions
Buttons doesn't light up, camera freeze and crashed the *uck out of the phone, ringtones keeping messing up(ringtone for one contact working for other etc) I don't want and don't need fancy ICS or stupid JB, I JUST NEED THIS PHONE TO WORK.
Not crashing the camera when I need it the most, don't mix the ringtones, and the buttons to work all the time
I understand that you don't own me something, but please, I just don't know what to do, I wasted countless hours on recovering the apps and setting for each rom I tried, and I just don't know what to do.

hi,
I really don't know what to do..the only thing I want now is to throw this piece of **** out of my window and buy an iPhone.
I tried more then 5 different roms, many CM9(ICS) and now with CM10(JB- currently this one) and the same *ucking bugs occur at all of these versions
Buttons doesn't light up, camera freeze and crashed the *uck out of the phone, ringtones keeping messing up(ringtone for one contact working for other etc) I don't want and don't need fancy ICS or stupid JB, I JUST NEED THIS PHONE TO WORK.

first of all, please watch your language!
second of all, if the same bugs appear on all roms have you considered that your phone is faulty?
if you made sure the hardware works fine, i recommend you to start from scratch (flash 2.2.2 CEE/nordic SBF; root; install clockworkmod) and flash CM7.2 stable, thats the most stable and fastest rom for now on the defy, and this is with the most funcionality.

Whats the diffrant between bugs in ALL the roms or a phone hardware bug? if it ain't working it ain't working.
I know its the most stable and the fastest, but I'm 95% sure it have the same bugs I'm having(ringtones, buttons doesn't lit, camera crash).
I tried MIUI for change, but its only Gingerbread(?) and don't have my native language (Russian).
There is any other roms to try?

2 options:
1 - Install CM7.2 stable as @zakoo2 said rr MS2Ginger (suports RU language);
2- Throw your phone out the window and buy an iPhone.
so either pull yourself together, put a little effort and find a solution, or spend a load of money on a crappy, but nice looking phone, your choice.
first, wipe everything (data/cache/dalvik), then reflash a froyo sbf, then install cm7.2 stable.
there are plenty of guides for this in the general section.

So call moto and be ignored lol, go into the dev forum and check the 1st thread.
If you wanted an I phone, why did you buy this? IPhone lovers will always be android haters! unless they have both

Buy Iphone and dont bother ass. ICS and JB is nightly. Want stable tried stable,so easy. CM7 ist good
Please show me where it was solved my problem and many other people.
It has not been resolved, many people have hardware problems with the red lens
go to the development section. There you find a thread with the sbf you need. flash the sbf (link in the thread) and you got the stock rom.
then, the if you got the same errors with the stock rom, your hardware if faulty.
