Now that we have kernel source... anyone see Ubuntu in our future?

I have unbuntu on my pc and in process of partitioning he for mac os x install 3 OS why not

Well, ubuntu netbook edition 10-10 would be the perfect candidate, but it seems someone already beat us to the punch:

If we could find a somewhere to download that version of ubuntu netbook, all the basic tablet specific work has already been done, might just need a couple tweeks. I have personally had no luck to even find the company's website though.

That does not apply, there are no hardware similarities between an android tablet and that one other than form factor.
That machine uses an Intel Atom processor, ubuntu install image on a usb drive and you're pretty much done on that one. Not so much for us.

Its sad, but between the Honeycomb delays, and Linux being put on the back burner, we have very limited choices at the moment. Ultimately I would like to have Linux on my A7 too, as long as its not uncomfortably slow with only 512MB DDR2 RAM. It looks like Meego might be the distribution to watch for any kind of prebuilt distributable images, at least they have some big players still on board for backing, and they support a variety of platforms.
If you have access to the Nvidia Tegra 250 Developer kit, you could try building a custom Gentoo distro. I really like Gentoo for its configurability options, but honestly, I'm afraid of bricking my A7 with one little mistake.

Android still uses a Linux kernel though, so with kernel source and ability to compile for the tegra chip progress will not grind to a halt. Things just unfortunately won't move along as quickly as most of us would like.
I think a modified version of Ubuntu NBR would run fairly quick on an a7 though.

After some more digging around on the Nvidia Developers forum, I tracked down a few "work-arounds" to install linux...however, please note that most of these posts are very dated.

Bodhi Linux for Gen 8?

Just started a thread with the developers over at http://www.bodhilinux.com/forums/ to try and get this awesome little distro of linux running on our tablets. What is Bodhi linux? Its a beautiful, fully functional, low resource hogging version of Ubuntu, basically. It uses the e17 desktop window manager (http://www.enlightenment.org/) which is better suited to tablet use than Gnome or KDE. It will run on machines with virtually no resources (http://www.bodhilinux.com/system.php) and run well. Last but not least, have a look at the software that it can run (http://www.bodhilinux.com/software/doku.php).
One of the developers on the forum thinks that they might try and push an Arm based version of Bodhi up their list of todo's if they could get the support for it So if anyones interested, and even if your not, please visit the links and don't be afraid to join the forums to show support for this. This could be amazing if it bears fruit.

It looks like really nice dream. It is just awsome. I am waiting to authorization email from bodhilinux forum so I can post on it too. I am waiting for my Archos 101 to arrive. I wanted to start some work to get some linux distro with e17 on it. But Bodhilinux developed for it... I have no words. Just awsome.
Wouldn't it be brilliant! Not getting my hopes up yet but I can't help but get a little excited. Bodhi guys seem really supportive too, if they got this working it could really take off for them, every android tab owner would want it from galaxy tab to the nook and we might be the first.

Hmm, I never thought of using the E17 GUI for a tablet. I think where it shines is that the widgets are resizable! This means you can get them just right for your tablet's screen.
On the downside, it is amazing how many places on your tablet that you are reminded that a touch screen is NOT a mouse when you try to use a desktop environment that was designed to use a mouse. For a preview of what I am talking about simply use either an RDP or VNC client on your tablet to remote into one of your traditional computer's screen. Yes, this is solvable, but it means even MORE work.
All that said, if that guy gets it running on his Nokia N900, then getting it to work on our Archos shouldn't be all that much harder.
I think it would be easier to just do the Debian install on our tablets as found elsewhere on this forum and then E17 would just be an "apt-get" away. Next all you would do is import the wonderful customizations and artwork from Bodhi (not hard) and you are done!
I understand what your saying but the dev over at Bodhi seems really supportive so i,'d expect long term support for Arm based tablets in general. There maybe a tweaked GUI in the future ,who knows? But either way it'd be a really fun little distro to have on our device. I agree that Debian would probably be easier for us but that's a well established distro. Bodhi on the other hand is still in its infancy and they would really benefit from our support , as much as we could benefit from theirs.

I was thinking about installing Debian with E17 too. But then we got in touch with Bodhi developers. Try installing of E17 on any general distribution and then try installing last Bodhi version. I was using Bodhi in version 1.0 for some time, but some bugs in E17 environment forced me to get back to xfce. But now I tried to install 1.1 and I started thinking about installing it again as main OS to my work notebook. Main difference is Bodhi has many customizations and improvements made to E17 and updates are made from SVN sources. In Debian you get few months old version. In Bodhi you are more up to date. E17 is developing really fast. Those bugs are gone and it is only a few months. This is main reason why I am interested in Bodhi on Archos much more than trying to install it on top of Debian. I will send some money to donate dev tablet for Jeff on thursday so we will see what happens in near future. Still waiting for my Archos 101 to arrive. Another reason for me to make donation instead of trying to get it working on my own is that Jeff and his team will make all the hard work for all of us. I was playing with Debian on Eken M001 and it ate a lot of my time. I appreciate Jeff's interest in this so I can spent my time another way.

The only thing I have to complain are the virtual keyboards. Something like

- I read Bodhi-Linux has its own repository. Can I still use debian packages? For example if I like to install software which is not existing in the repository.
- Which virtual keyboard is used by Bodhi-Linux? Can it compete with the Maemo version (Screenshots?).
Bodhi has its own repositories, but only for customized contents. The rest is downloaded directly from Ubuntu repositories. I think Bodhi for Archos may be build on Debian, because it has arm packages ready to use. You will be able to install .deb packages surely.
Virtual keyboard looks really usable in Bodhi (E17). May be it is customizable, but I didn't try to change its skin. It has three different layouts (letters, numbers and symbols, customized notebook keyboard layout including cursor keys, home, end, etc.) and it is possible to use different languages. I don't have any screenshots, but you can try it yourself. Download Bodhi iso and run it in virtual machine. After boot choose tablet/netbook profile and you can make an image of how it would look like after successful port to Archos. The best thing is that it is optimized for finger scrolling and touch operation as well. I like its environment.
As of when i post this we currently have half of the target donated, a total of 108 dollars while we need 200. Jeff over at bodhi will stump up the last 100 dollars to make full price for the archos and then start testing on it. If say we got bodhi on our archos, can u then install like say a latex editor (say kyle) and edit latex in proper syntax ? (as in the program helps and not just typing a plain text)
Planning on basing Bodhi for ARM on Debian. So once I get it up and rolling you will be able to install any of the 10,000+ packages in the debian repo on your ArchOS

Found out about this today, had debian running on my archos but it just didn't feel right. This looks to be amazing and if it's anything like the reviews i have been reading it will replace android on my archos (Despite any beta bugs).

The general UI is working. The touch screen, wifi, and CPU manager all work. Been currently working on getting support for E's built in battery module working with the tablet hardware.
Once I get the battery rolling I'll post an image with instructions for installing the "alpha" quality image on your own ArchOS.

Dual Boot to Chrome from Tegra

Does anyone no how to dual boot the Galaxy Tab 10.1 or G-Slate into Chrome OS?

chrome OS is designed for x86 hardware(intel and amd, just like your desktop), not ARM. that being said, I believe there is an arm version somewhere but I'm not sure if it's supported to the same degree as the x86. both the launch devices and the cr-48 run on x86 so I imagine that's the platform of choice.
I do believe that someone got it running on the iPad so I guess it's entirely possible. will it happen though? I doubt it. I'd be happy for someone to prove me wrong though

It is for ARM also. I know that there are a few projects out there attempting to port ubuntu and other linux flavours to run on arm - i can boot ubuntu from my sd card in my Omnia 2 cellphone - just can't do anything meaningful (yet!)
Not really sure why you would want to cripple your tablet by putting chrome OS on it though? Ah he mentioned dual booting - so maybe he wants to dual boot into chrome for when his wife's playing with it and back into Android when it's his turn

Support Further ARM Development Ubuntu Eclipse SDK etc

Hi guys I am buying a eee pad but currently I am emailing Eclipse Google and others to try and get support to make developing for Android on Android possible.
I wish to start a foundation or support group toward this end if you want to contribute or help in anyway it would be great I will also add a poll for comparison of votes so please vote it all helps.
As I understand it porting Ubuntu to different devices is well still in beta stages for the most part but we all know that personalized mobile computing is the future and tablets or tf style devices will eventually replace laptops netbooks and the like.
As I understand the biggest problem is new tech!! that fresh out the box smell is still lingering and leaves support and development slim in some more common place computing needs where x86 has rained supreme leaving others to wish for such a client base of great support and programs.
So all in all this is to try push things in the right direction. Who to talk to when to talk to them and how to help the eee pad and other similar devices become fully fledged dual boot Android Ubuntu platforms with the option to develop and do all the other great things Ubuntu can offer.
Please only positive criticism or feedback this is the tech community anything is possible so please no comments of OMG YOU CANT DO THAT!!!! etc etc
Currently, you can compile C program or whatever without problems, using a chroot ubuntu or debian.
But developing for android implies that the android sdk has to be ported on arm platform. This is a paradox, but most android and java tools are working only on x86 platform, probably because at this time, phones was not meant to be dev platforms considering their cpu power.
Openjdk seems to work on arm but the android sdk relies on javac from sun.
There are now powerful tablet devices on the market - including our beloved tf - where we could potentially develop android apps ; I think that google will sooner or later release an arm version of the android sdk. Since then, we are almost pretty stuck : I'm not sure that all the android tools are opensource, and even if it is the case, there is still the problem of javac from sun which does not work on arm platform. However, doing our own dev platform implies that we can port ourselves the sdk on arm, and use openjdk as a replacement of sun-java runtime. Not a piece of cake My advice is to wait several months google next move to see what's going to happen, now that there are more and more tablets on the market.
If we get enough support though maybe we can push for both to be ported and released

As time progresses, more will be done definitely this is more about making sure that it is pushed as i believe at the moment its being over looked. I think manufacturers and Google and eclipse etc all under estimate there own products possibilities and the abilities of the tech community and in particular the xda community. Even if we had beta releases only for xda devs it would be a step in the right direction for developing android on android.
OK I'm going to bite the bullet and ask why would this be considered a good idea? I write software for Android and using Eclipse on lower screen resolutions isn't that productive IMHO, throw in poor keyboards and miniscule touchpads and it makes little sense. Finally considering the performance differences between a tablet and development laptop (i7, 8 GB RAM, SSD, etc) I just can't see getting the development tools working on an Android device to be all that useful at this point in time.
Nvidia is claiming the T3 will be as powerful as a Core 2. Seems a little exaggerated, but in the near future, it may be possible to dev. on a tab. Eclipse (and real games) are the last things tying me to my PC. Now I would not want to run Eclipse on a T2, but a T4??? Now we are talking.

I tend to agree. I find even a powerful laptop is pretty marginal. I prefer a desktop with at least 2 monitors, one for code and one for the emulator.
All valid points but if no one is looking forward at the glass half full it wont become a reality
What I'm saying is work needs to start now infrastructure then city not a repeat of Auckland central we need the ground work done then the devices can catch up

Yes Governors are a function of the Linux Kernel, it can not be done to the factory boot.img due to the constraints with the current Kernel. We will be launching a Ubuntu custom ROM for the Kindle in a few weeks, maybe a couple of Months, it really depends on how busy we are with the XDA topic.
Here is what you would do to build and pack a Kernel:
How To Build Kernel Step 1: Make sure you are running Linux, or else it won't work. So the current Kindle Kernel is out.
How To Build Kernel Step 2: Download the source code from either source.android.com, sonymobile.com (for a stock kernel), kernel.org or FXP github for FXP Kernel.
How To Build Kernel Step 3: unpack the source code from one of the above sources
How To Build Kernel Step 4: make changes to the source code you want to (i.e. adding in governors or io schedulers) - example here
How To Build Kernel Step 5: Build the source (note: the defconfig is probably different you'll have to check the /arch/arm/config folder to figure out which ones is the FXP one...) - Example here
How To Build Kernel Step 6: Make it into a boot img as noted here: Sony Developer Site
How To Build Kernel Step 7: Try booting, if it works, check to make sure that the changes you made sticked. If it doesn't boot, well, you can ask questions in this thread or send us a PM, we do this almost daily.

To be exact, it will be Ubuntu for Android and Ubuntu. There are two versions, one is pure Ubuntu, the other is Ubuntu for Android - we will be building both platforms. The overall idea is to eliminate the old desktop PC. We will be doing an official post when Ubuntu sends us the Ad shots and personalized goodies we can share with everyone in XDA. This has been a joint venture that we have been working hard to make reality. Finally, the idea was launched at CES, now it is time to make everything reality.

Are you talking about bringing "ubuntu for phones" and "ubuntu for android" with all the benefits and features as announced on ubuntu.com to the kindle fire hd soon? I heard Mark Shuttleworth saying he is expecting to see ubuntu on phones in Q4/2103-Q1/2014.
How much of that development is in that coming ubuntu? Is there any more or less official collaboration with canonical or s.th. like that?

Initially we will be offering Ubuntu for Android. We are an acknowledged developer with Canonical and are developing Apps for Ubuntu for Android, although all of the Google Apps will work natively under Ubuntu for Android. You will have the several ten of thousands of Apps already available for Ubuntu on top of the Google Play options. How much development is happening with Ubuntu? A large amount, we alone spend 4 to 6 hours daily developing new apps for Ubuntu. Yes, we are working directly with Canonical on both the development aspect of Ubuntu and the promotion part of the new idea. This has been in discussion for over 2 years, as of CES it became reality. We are working to build a custom ROM for the Kindle, time-line is hard to nail down at the moment and it is not due to the Compiling part of the ROM it has to do with the constraints we are under with Canonical directly.
There are several aspects of Ubuntu that we can not even discuss at the moment, all I can say, is that we have an exciting future ahead of us and the desktop PC will disappear as we know it in the next three to four years, you can mark my words.
Yes, the release of the OEM Ubuntu Phone are really not going to happen until Q1 of 2014, Q4 of 2013 is a dream, but not very realistic. If they deploy the idea too early, the idea will fall on it's face. The idea has to be deployed in a highly methodical fashion. The first part is what we are doing, getting everyone excited - you should be excited, this is an awesome platform!
I will post an official release when Canonical approves us to do so, more to come.............

Run windows and android native on SGT !

Maybe it will soon be possible to run android and windows nt nativly at the same time on the SGT!

ReactOS is an open source windows clone and most of the windows applications work on it ! (MS office, opera, ff, ...) the good news is there is an ARM port of ReactOS - Windows RT equivalent:

ReactOS still has problems to work on real hardware because of many different components but on some PC it works very well (it can be targeted to SGT fix the bugs)
The ARM port is able to run on the SGT but there is still a lot of work to do.
Windows will soon release a Office ARM version for winRT and in order to run any windows application on the SGT a recompile is needed.
and about android there is already a port of android that runs native on windowsne emulation no virtual machine !!)

If anyone has any coding skills it would be nice to try to port reactos to the SGT or just to donate to the project with the subject "arm port for SGT"
This runs pretty well even at alpha stage, I tested it in virtualbox in my laptop, and I'll test it on emulator in my SGT soon... they've planned to bring it up to windows 8... hope that everyone interested here will help the fundraising...
I posted this just to keep this thread up, so don't blame me for not saying anything useful...
I think(theory) that it will run very smoothly on SGT, because it only uses 6mb of graphic memory, I tested it with 256mb RAM and 500mb HDD, and it was better than my expectations!

While I applause the developers efforts and certainly see potential benefit..I wonder still if it not more practical to remote desktop as thin client using an app like splashtop for full windows desktop usability?

Why you gotta get greedy 5 posts in?
I have 20 US Dollars for the first person that can port even an alpha of this, and an extra 15 USD to anyone who can fix up our Ubuntu port (everything needed to fix the kernel is available in Samsung's ICS kernel). There are just too many sweet things that we get close to but never actually get.

What is the basis for this statement? Has someone demonstrated any ReactOS code running on a Tegra 2? Is it simply because someone put up that ARM Port section of the wiki? The ARM CPUs represent a wide range of devices. Just because someone decided to put up a blurb about that doesn't mean we are anywhere close to getting a worth while port of ReactOS running on this device.

Perhaps this is the way to go to make this tablet suck less, but I would recommend switching to a windows tablet, either a Rt-based or a x86-based tablet. Back when galaxy tab 2 10.1 came to the stores, I went ahead and got one.
And that was a decision I soon came to regret deeply. Android is simply not comparable to windows, not even on a tablet.
So I went to buy a hp elitepad, running windows 8 pro. This impressed me so much that I also bought an Asus vivotab Rt.
The fact that the elitepad is running x86, means that I now will install virtualbox, and then install android for x86.
And perhaps mac os, windows nt, bsd or Ubuntu. Time will show.
My point here being, it is better to start with a superior os and then install the inferior ones, instead of doing this in reverse.

You really can't compare a weak Tegra 2 processor to a much more powerful Intel processor, based on two totally different architectures, running two totally different OSes, two totally different tablets with entirely different specs... You're comparing a snail to a Toyota sports car.
Try out a Tegra 4 tablet or a Snapdragon 800 tablet... That's some good stuff. Nexus 10 too, Exynos is a beast.
