Action Item!! Petition to Increase Apps Partition - Gen8 General

If you're anything like me, you're frustrated with having only 300MB of an 8GB drive available to install applications. Sure, custom firmware is a potential solution, but should we really have to void our warranties for basic, no-brainer functionality? I say no! Sign this petition, and once we have a demonstrated body of people interested, we can all make Archos aware of it.

as I wrote [EDIT] on Archosfans forum [/EDIT] 1GB is fine for the A43 and up considering the uSD slot, but max I could accept for my A32 would be to go to a max of 512MB.
I'd doubt that A28 owners would want to give ANY space up at all, but it's even more limited as far as storage goes than the A32 and I'd have to call it of questionable usefulness for apps given that I really only run apps on the A32 in a pinch. (Probably because I find the ultra low res annoying... not to mention the A28 is also further constrained by available RAM...)

Right, so an optional firmware update or modification would be ideal. I trust the folks are Archos are savvy enough to account for everybody's needs.

If you have root (Archangel works) try Move2SD Enabler.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=720739
Its fantastic, read the instructions and don't move any system apps or apps using widgets.

I have installed move2sd enabler, and it definitely helps. However, if you like to read a lot like I do and have Kobo, Nook, Kindle, Aldiko, and OverDrive installed, they still leave a combined total of like 30MB+ on the system storage! That's 10 percent or more of the app partition just for books. Throw in a couple of games like Pocket Legends and Angry Birds, and you're cooked!
I wish more devs would be like the folks that made Highborn or Shadow Era, and only leave like 300KB of the original 44MB apk on system storage, but I think petitioning Archos is more likely to help our little Gen 8 community more immediately.
Thanks for the sigs, folks. We're already up over 20!

You know actually thinking about this the gTablet and many other just allocate 2GB to app storage, which I wouldn't mind either. OTOH I think that I've barely used 425MB or so max on the gTab at one time or another...
IIRC many games with "HUGE" (well for mobile devices) seem to prefer to put their data in /sdcard which depending upon device is actually the SD card(or uSD) or the leftover internal flash not assigned to system or data etc. I must admit to not having really paid attention to how the Archos tabs do it as I've left bothof mine bog standard stock fw plus various additional apps which suits me for what I use them for.
(Even my phone is stock but that's gonna have to change as it has even LESS storage for apps which is also shared for things like messaging... but I'm going to try to hold out for the next update then go to a CM7 variant that pushes apps out onto the uSD...)

Would rather they made it an option (like the FAT32/ext3 choice).
Making it compulsory and 1gb is not in everyones interests. Some users will instill no apps or very few and want all the storage for music/movies etc. Forcing 1GB apps area on them is wrong and will also mean archos are not providing the advertised storage in these users eyes.
I suggest we request they add an option to either turn on/off the larger 1GB apps area. Or have a drop down box where the user can choose apps area. Say; 300MB (Standard/Default), 500MB, 750MB, 1GB & 2GB. This way the user can choose the most suitable apps partaition size for themselves and on the flipside Archos are still providing (selling) the advertised data storage out of the box.
Not sure how but, if others agree, can we ammend this petition so we are asking archos to allow the user to select a larger apps partition either 1GB (yes/no arrangement) or select apps partition size from a small list.
Would this idea not be much better for all concerned.
Kind Regards
John

I don't support this petition and think the devs should rather spend their time with something more important. I only install the applications I need and uninstall everything I don't need. If one really needs more, then he can install Uruk.

1Gb might be a little too much : I only have the 8gb model (hopefully I have a 16Gb sd card)!

Even if you uninstall you will find that you are still eating up space. Furthermore, using UrukDroid voids your warranty and this shouldn't be required. The 101 was advertised with 8/16GB and no mention was included in the marketing material about the 256MB capacity for apps. This should not be an issue but it is and it is a bit peevish of you to take such a position since the worst thing that could happen in your case is a reduction of internal storage by some megabytes, which even if you were using you can make up with an SD card.

This is one of those things that bugs me about android; why cant I choose the install location? I now have 4 android devices, so I am not hating on it. I just miss all the features of Symbian and WinMo 6.5, like installing where I want. If anyone knows why they did it this way im all ears, maybe they had a reason?

Easy Answer.
There are paid Apps in the Market and the ( google ) needed a more or less easy but effective way to secure them so that stealing them is not easy.
So in the first 6 incarnations Apps are phone Memory only.
With Froyo they invented a feature where the appdev could decide that and how much of the app could be put somewhere else.
So if there would be none/less people stealing apps there would be no need for this.

no works on my 101

Is App Storage Limit a thing of the past?

http://mobile.engadget.com/2010/01/06/googles-got-a-plan-for-overcoming-androids-app-storage-limit/
If you had storage limit before, you could root your phone and do apps2sd. You'll be able to do the same with the N1. Google's just making it official for non-daring people soon.
But no one at XDA really ever had a storage limit

Cool. With 32GB storage card this should'nt be an issue then. Currently my music alone takes close to 20GB on my 3GS.
Is anybody using a 32GB storage card yet?
I haven't found one for sale yet. Only 16GB.
I rarely listen to any of the music on my 8B/C6 card. Pandora, and hopefully someday - XM, keep me in-tune.

with that much memory there is no need to do apps2sd- cyanogen has even stated as such. My magic has 228MB i think and i have about 150 apps on it and still at least 30% free.....
To the one who already have a N1: How much internal memory is free after a clean factory reset (Hard reset)?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=614884
Yeah... I currently have a 512mb ext partition on my sdcard in my Dream, and I have 200+ apps, and I'm not even close to thinking about getting close to running out of room. Until we start seeing apps that are 10mb+ on the Market (and I mean lots of those apps), we are NEVER going to worry about running out of room for apps on the N1. 512mb for apps is more than overkill. And, I'm sure we may see more huge apps on the Market in the future, but with Google releasing "official apps2sd", the answer to your question is yes. Forget about app size. Install anything and everything you want. You'll never run out of room.
We'll not have 512 MB for apps in the N1, just about 150 MB are free to use after a hardreset by the user, the rest is filled by os and other stuff.

Of course not the entire on-board memory is available to apps. Part of it is already filled. the point is.... it's a ridiculously huge amount of storage, however you cut it. By the time you fill it up (which will be a looong time), we'll have the official apps on sd from Google.
Hope so, and if not I have to root the N1
Using System monitor I have
Memory usage: Available:212.0MB
Used: 113.0 MB
Storage: system:542.0MB
Used: 214.0MB
I probably have 150+ apps, I haven't learned to rely on the Market to get apps, I just keep DL'ing more.

191MB's is what mine said after a factory reset.
That should be sufficient, at least for the moment. Before I root my N1 I want to get used to Android as I'm a former Win mobile user. Yes, I'm a Traitor, and I love to be one
I think that until Android inherently supports apps2sd, apps will not develop beyond a certain point. For example, how many apps do you see that are more than 5MB? People are afraid to download large files. And why on earth do people keep saying that apps2sd isn't necessary on the N1? It has less app storage space available to it than my myTouch. If it was needed on the myTouch then it is needed even more on the N1. I have less than 200MB available for apps, data AND cache. That is appalling on a device that is this good. It basically took a really great piece of hardware and used it as a toilet by adding so little storage. So even though I will be able to use apps2sd, it does nothing to advance the platform as far as super-apps (like those 100MB games for the iPhone I keep hearing about) are concerned. Google need to implement what my six-year old 100MHZ WinMo phone currently has. For shame Google, for shame.
I have 198Mb free after a hard reset.
Strange we're all getting different readings..........

For the record, System Monitor from the Market reads the internal memory incorrectly. What it says in the Settings menu under SD Card and Phone Storage is correct. Try adding, for example, more than 200MB to the internal memory (I do this with a test script I have). You will get a write error since there is no space left on the device. After all is said and done, there are ONLY 200MB available for apps, data and cache, which is not nearly enough. And you will never see 10MB+ apps on the regular basis until Google changes the storage capacity. The apps don't come first. The storage capability does.
I just don't understand why people keep saying that storage issue are a things of the past. If anything, it's gotten worse since the myTouch 3G which had more free storage than the N1.

I think what this thread is referring to is the fact that the Android engineers mentioned in the Nexus One conference that they are planning to do Apps2SD officially in an upcoming release. Once that happens then storage problems will really be a thing of the past and we will start seeing many more media rich apps on the Market.
The fact that the N1 has less user storage than the myTouch is probably because they knew this was coming when they planned the N1's default partitions and decided that they'd rather release the N1 geared more towards more space for future OS upgrades rather than more space for the soon-to-be-obsolete on-phone app storage...
I got a low space warning today on my N1. I think I had 16MB free, 97 apps installed. I freed up some space, and now have 87 apps with 43MB free.
The N1 does 'not' have unlimited storage space, and A2SD, although not as nessesary as on the G1, would still definitely be an asset. We all thought the 512MB ROM meant tons of space for apps, but not when more than half is already used out of the box.
Just a quick reminder to keepyour Market Cache cleared and your Browser Cache cleared. together they can rack up quite a chunk of internal memory unless you use a cache clearing app like eRay etc

Repartitioning the storage, is it possible?

Hi,
We are able to unlock the bootloader ...
We got root ...
My question, is it possible to repartition the storage?
For example: Right now, there is only 1GB space for internal storage.
Is it possible to create 2GB?
And if it is possible, will it be a problem if Google have another OS update?
I meant, does Android OS update will check the "original" storage "layout"?
Thanks
excellent question.
I'd like to know as well, as i already have 1.5 GB of apps & games installed on my SGS that i plan to restore to the Nexus S when it arrives
meaning i'm already over the limit, and i've not even started yet
The answer is probably no. The same question was raised on the MT4G/G2 forums regarding their internal storage and it was determined that the eMMC/storage/whatever it's called chip can only be flashed one time. After that, it is physically impossible to change how it's partitioned in any way.
Now, granted, this is a Samsung device and, thus, they may use different chips. I find it unlikely, though, that it will be any different.
there might be a chance if Nexus S is indeed another breed of the Galaxy S family.
if it's fixed size and not changeable, then it's a good news for us, we will not see the corruption problems we found on many SGS when people repeatedly formatted their Internal SD to try different things
but on the other hand, it will kinda suck, as that will really limit the amount of Apps we can install in the device.
which will put a very heavy enphasis on using App2SD even more

You know, a gigabyte for apps goes a very long way. I had 130 apps on my i9000, lots of big ones like CoPilot and some games. I never even got over the 500mb mark on using up my app storage.
Never say never, of course, but I can't imagine worrying about app space on my phone. I'm sure I'll have a new one with much better specs by next summer, which, if apps start growing in size, will have more memory.
How do you have 1.5GB of apps? I have over 150 installed, and they're only like 300MB. Granted, I don't have a ton of games, but I still think it would be hard to get that many apps.

No micro-sd slot, why bother (for most)?

Unless planning on only using as an ereader and web device, the less than seven gigs of total usable storage between apps and data/media storage kind of makes the device pointless.
Why bother? Especially people that dwell in these forums.
I dont know, I'm more of a "glass is half full" person. Considering the price point and Amazon's excellent return policy, I dont see the harm in getting it into your hands and deciding then.
I for one do not use a huge amount of storage space. I don't keep music or movies on my phone. But the SD card is still useful for backing up my apps and data. I'm mostly concerned about how the lack of an SD card is going to impact your ability to hack stuff.
As long as I can hack the thing to run stock Android, I don't care about the lack of an SD card.
I think it's best to think of the built-in storage as cache. Amazon is trying to everything on its cloud. Books, videos, music... all stored on their cloud. When you need it, it'll cache it locally.
Same goes for backup. No need to backup to a SD card because it'll automatically be backed up to their cloud.
Err..
I think there is a certain missed point here that the author felt was going to be picked up. (Correct me if I am wrong.)
First, you can only keep AMAZON purchases in the cloud.
Second, while the processor is impressive.. they ripped out a lot of "nice" things which would have been cool to have.. I mean if it didn't have dual core 1ghz processor.. it would just be another "value tablet" or hell it would be frowned upon more than that due to the lack of bells and whistles.
So, the problem we have.. Is if you plan on doing anything besides ereading you are out of luck.. (and lets be real here.. if this was only being looked at as an ereader, it wouldn't have a forum here.)
Since you can't load whatever you want to the cloud, your stuck with 8 gigs which might be "ok" if it was *ONLY* an ereader.. However, honestly.. by the time you root it.. install the latest version of Cyanogen and possibly load a few songs on there.. most of your space is done.
Aside from that, the fact that it has no optional SD card slots may complicate the rooting/unrooting process. I would buy a Nook Color for 50$ more, because I can run CM7 from an SD card and not void my warranty since I could dual boot it. Especially if the kindle fire ends up unable to go back to stock.

Except with new nook colors on the way, the original isn't going to cost more than the fire anymore. I can imagine new condition original NCs going for $150 or less over the holidays.
The fire is a sweet tab at a nice price and I've been eagerly awaiting details all summer, but for some folks the slot is going to be important. I boot my TP2 android build from the SD card, and I like the low risk nature of it. Not sure if with a NC I would go nand or sd, but I like having the option.
Honestly for 150$ i'd probably grab the Nook Color..
unless the lenovo A1 was priced the same and had equal dev support.
I'm definitely holding off on kindle to see what else comes out... I am wondering if others are going to try to beat kindle to the punch.. or if they are going to think it is worth it..
I mean it is hard to compete if amazon takes a loss on hardware in hopes of making it up in software.

Dwelling.......... Here.
sent from my Infuse at Tranquility Base.
Ive got a Viewsonic gTablet which has around 16GB of internal space
Ive run Cyanogen and it takes up maybe a half a gig of room, that would leave around 7GB of storage
most of the apps I use are installed on and stored on the internal parition which is around 2GB, so that leaves around 1.5GB of usable space of which my apps take up about 500MB
out of the 14GB I have on the second parition of the 16GB onboard SD card I have 9.3GB free, and its storing all my ROMs...
I use less than 5GB for storage, so 8GB seems like plenty to me for now
I wont be keeping terabytes of video and music on this tablet so it doesnt matter to me personally
even with my gtablet I use less than 8GB, I stream most everything I watch on it as well
wouldnt be any different for the Kindle Fire...
I would prefer some kind of external storage option, but thats ok, its not required
A SD slot would be nice but not that big of a deal. I already have my on
pre-order. Most Rooting and Roms can be done with out a removable SD
card, the Nexus S 4g doesn't have a removable SD. I have rooted and gone
back and forth from stock to custom works just fine.

Exactly.... Why would you want the ROM on the SD card? I guess its to keep stock on your phone? But I thought we were the ones that didn't care about stock and were pushing the envelope... Well I came in at Droid 1... We didnt have SD card option back then. You either voided your warranty or you did what Verizon told you too. So I ask you this... When you your own Admin on your own phone... can't you write your own Warranty?

Er.
I will push the envelope. I have CM7 on my captivate.. The issue is I can odin to stock.
There isn't always an easy way to go back to stock. And if I'm going to get a kindle fire I am going to use it as a full on tablet.
I already have over 8 gigs in play on my phone a lone :/
I have no problem flashing, rooting or anything else. If I completely break my device and it is my fault, I'm not going to make someone else pay for my mistakes.
On the other hand, I always want a way to go back, in case of faulty hardware which does happen time to time.
So even though it isn't dual core..if your going to flash anyway.. it makes the nook color a bit more appealing.. especially since it will probably get a price drop soon :/
Hey, to each his own. you know? We don't have to agree I hope the Nook works out for you brother. Personally, I am going with the fire I don't have a need to return faulty hardware and if I do I will figure it out when I do.

A micro SD card slot would have been nice.
But for $199 I'm not going to complain. It has superior hardware compared to some of the tablets priced in that range.
Dropbox will give you another 2gb cloud storage for free and you can get tons more cheaply if you need it.
Since I stream everything, I don't get what the fuss is about no SD card.
Same as the people fussing over the lack of cameras, mic, bluetooth and 3g. I have a phone to take care of those things plus I'll just use my phone's 4g wifi hotspot to get online if I need to.

Would a micro usb flash drive do the same thing?
Amazon has their own storage service that they want to sell you a subscription to. Also, having no SD card makes a little more difficult to hack. No doubt Amazon watched the NC get hacked and not used to buy B&N products and want to ensure they get additional revenue for the subsidizing the cost of the Fire.

Really.. the Amazon Tab is lacking. I mean I hate to invoke the name, because it seems to grant instant flame wars.. However, We crucify another brand which is very popular among the general population for these kinds of tactics.
I mean I really feel like all people are reading is "IPS screen, Dual core, 199$" which is a very compelling device.. however, it is a pretty hard sale.

dropbox won't give you anything last I checked. It requires you to have however much space you want to use on the actual device.
To me 3g is a ripoff anyway I will admit. Camera's aren't something I require on every single device I buy.. and honestly.. blue tooth is cool but not a prerequisite.
I really just think expandable storage (especially on an 8GB device) would be highly beneficial. I mean If I am wrong and you can throw whatever you want on the cloud I may reconsider.
The other issue I have.. although not a deal breaker.. is it looks like no physical buttons.. I at least want a back, home and menu.. Admittedly I have that problem with nook too but, it's w/e.

[Q] A small advice: Xperia tablet Z2: 16 gig version enough?

G'day
My question: is a 16GB tablet enough space?
(This I wrote so any reader can quickly see if he wants to read on or not, so: for reading comfort).
Casus:
- I am probably the last on earth who buys a tablet laugh
- I found a I think nice deal: new Xperia Z2, 16GB, with original power charge cradle, 350 EUR.
- The problem: 16GB.
- I also have a bloatware HTC One SV which refuses to take updates 'because of not enough space (and I can't uninstall any apps since it is all Google standard apps that can't be uninstalled). So that triggered my thinking:
So that makes me worry: is 16GB enough space for the OS and all the stuff apps will want to install on the internal 16GB, now and in the future?
Ellaboration:
- As is said in many threads on this forum, put in a SD card and store, music, docs etc on that. Sound thinking.
- But, as I am generally rather a noob on smartphones and apps (not on FreeBSD, 'though, so not a complete 'puternoob :angel, I have no clue which part of the storage I can't control. I mean, if every app only wants it data stored on the internal disk, and if the OS will grow from (I think 4 gig now?) to suddenly 15 gig in Android 5.0 (I understood that is comng to the Z2 too), then the external SD card will be rather useless - the apps and the OS won't use it.
Of course, I'd rather have the 32GB, but that comes in at 500 EUR, so I thought I'd try to save myself the 150 EUR and spend these on flowers for my wife instead :victory:
So, will the 16GB in all fairness be enough for the OS and all the stuff apps will want to store on it (so: data on the external SD, provided of course then the installed apps will want to 'see' the external SD for reading the stored docs/movies/music/pics)?
Thank you in advance very much for any help
Bye,
I have the 16gb one, it's enough space for me I have many large games and a bunch of apps on it and I think I don't even used up half the space. Although it depends on what you plan on using your tablet for.
One way of making sure you have enough space is to root and unlock the device that way you can install custom roms which typically are smaller than the stock one, or just uninstall the bloat that comes with stock.
I don't know where you heard that android 5 will be 15 gigs but I highly doubt that it will be that big.
For me it is not enough, i have the 16GB Xperia Z phone, and i was sick of the "Not enough space" warning, so i bought the 32GB Z2 Tablet and i couldn't be happier. I have lots of games, all the apps i need. i also enjoy emulators so i can have them plus gigs of roms, and all the media i need in a 32GB SD card.
I will never, ever, buy a 16GB device.
With sd card and root you have atleast 16 + 64 GB to use for data and also for apps. Haven't try 128 GB sd card but 64 GB works fine.
It's not much more money for double the space. Seems silly not to save up a bit longer and buy the 32gb version. You can never upgrade later and apps and operating systems get bigger and bigger.
Thank you all very much for your reply
Of course, I agree, it is better to buy 32GB when you can. But given the current price offer for the 16GB, buying the 32 GB makes 16GB more costs 150 EUR, 195 USD, more.
So 16GB for 195 USD/150 EUR; GB's, the new gold
So I didn't say Android 5.0 will be 12GB, but, I mean: I like to buy as a not 'throw away next year'-consumer; I tend to try and use my gear for 10 years (works fine for my FreeBSD servers, used to work fine with my old Nokia's as well, I have no idea how it will turn out with smartphones and tablets).
So, given that:
IF 16GB will be useless one or two years (or three, or four) down the road, I will be forced to pay 150 EUR/195 USD more now for the lousy 16GB extra.
So that is what I am trying to find out: provided I agree user data should be stored on an external card so you can leave the internal card for the OS and apps and their config and flux data, I still have no clue how many of the OS and apps will respect this rule as well. I mean: if media app X decided it can only read the media (books, audio, vids), if it resides on the internal HDD, I am forced to move media from the external SD card to the internal HDD.
Question comes up: is there some sort of mandatory Android programming rule that every app should be able to read user data from external SD cards? Or is it up to a perhaps sloppy programmer, who decides the app can only use user data when it is on the internal HDD? (Don't laugh: Windows 3.1 demanded all data on C:\ ...).
Also, I understood for some (stupid) reason Google seems to have decided apps are no longer allowed to be stored on the external SD card (?)
(Well, I do understand why Google wants this: it wants the world to use their cloud for storage and stuff: handy for subscriptions and for sales of data to governments; double the pleasure).
So I still don't know what to do :cyclops:
Thanks again for your comments; very much appreciated

I thought Google will add microSD slot finally on Nexus 6

Google updated the security policy of external storage since KK.
The resolution of screen is 2K now.
Not only the quality of taking pictures and videos got better but also the size of them got bigger.
But Google just let microSD go away again.
I don't know why really.
It seems Google 'hates' or feels 'disgusting' about microSD

Google will never Include a MicroSD card slot in their Nexus line ever again, they're trying to push for full internet connectivity - grabbing everything off the cloud, which would make expandable storage useless in their eyes. That's all good for countries like the US and UK who can get unlimited mobile data plans for dirt cheap, but those of us in other countries with less ideal data plans are left having to decide between a nexus with limited data storage and a inferior phone with an SD card slot. It's just how it is sadly.
I don't think it's all about making us use the cloud. There could bentwood more possibilities I believe;
1) there are many different types of cards out there with different read and write speeds. Having a big storage with low speeds could lead to lag and general slowness..
2) Having a "removable" storage gives you an option to "remove" it, say, for media exchange. But a storage contains two types of data; user objects like musics, pictures and secondly apps which has some files inside of the actual storage also. So removing this storage may fail some apps to run. Companies prevent that by not letting people to store their apps inside of SD cards thus damaging the point of having an "extra" memory.
So I believe having an big internal storage is always betterb for these reasons..

Cannot speak for the UK...but the USA is a land of laughably capped data plans. most ISPs be they landline or cellular cap your data usage laughably low. The "cloud" will die a quick death, between data caps from fat-and-happy ISPs and internet non-neutrality.
I can think of solutions for everything except pushing the cloud.
Filesystems are a dime a dozen. Just require a non-patented one. Tell the user what's going on prior to formatting it and that they can put it in a windows machine and format it to use it elsewhere. Most people don't swap them about that often. Using a security aware filesystem would solve the problem with apps accessing other apps data as well. Other than root, but rooting the device makes the users responsible for the outcome of giving apps root permission.
Speeds, meh.. Do a test and warn the user that the card is slow. Even crappy slow cards are more than fast enough for all except the higher bitrate HD videos. And few people have constant access to networks faster than even the slower SD cards.
Removing the storage doesn't happen that often. And would happen less if they didn't use a windows compatible filesystem. Apps2Sd is a ridiculous feature when even small phones come with 16GB. It made sense on the G1. Not so much now. When formatting the card, warn the user that apps using that storage might have issues if you remove the card. I don't know many normal users that remove the card, other than to upgrade to a bigger one.
Bigger internal storage is always desirable. However, I think it's ridiculous to remove the card option for users that want it. 64GB is about the level where I can get away without the card, so I will probably end up with an N6. But I find it irritating that Google removes the option. Particularly since I can't think of a reason that isn't self serving for them to do it.
But it is what it is. That's just how they do it right now. If that's a deal breaker for you, you will have to find a different device. I wish they would put the hardware there at least. Even if it required a custom kernel to enable it. But it's not likely to happen anytime soon.
I wish people stop *****ing about the MicroSD slot already.
I hope Android 6.0 removes MicroSD all together

Yeah, those people with slow and/or limited data connections who have a need for a lot of storage on their phone are sooooo ridiculous and unreasonable. Google removing MicroSD all together in a future android update is completely the right choice. Consumers should have limited choices in everything they do as should phone manufactures...... Long live blindly following everything Google does and never considering anything but a Nexus cause everything Google does is so right and amazing....
I hope you know that's sarcasm....
I don't know why many people don't/fail to understand a simple basic thing about Google, Google makes money when people are online.
Google's fundamental business strategy is - do anything and everything possible to make people go online and spend as much as time as possible on the internet (Free Android, gmail, chrome, drive, Cheap Google Fiber, Google express, failed Google glass, upcoming Self driving cars etc..), so that Google could serve you more online ads, make money on your searches, clicks and would also get more data about your online activity which would enable more data mining.
with SD card in the phone people potentially would not go online as much compared to a phone with no SD card/less built in memory, that's why no SD card in the Nexus and also why Google is trying to kill the SD card support in lollipop.
The lack of a microSD slot makes it hard to decide between the Nexus 6 and Note 4. I don't know why Samsung is able to do it but Google not.

Because it has nothing to do with ability. It's a choice, plain and simple. Why they make that choice is debatable, but anything we think is speculation. I generally go with "follow the money". Google gains if people are using the cloud more. But that's just opinion.
It's not a technology issue, every one of those I've seen trotted out is easy to work around.
Between the note 4 and Nexus 6... The biggest difference is touchwiz really. People will say that AOSP roms will be made. And they are right. However, note 3 still lacks a fully functional AOSP that is as stable as stock. Even if you don't care about the missing hardware support like NFC. The stability just isn't there. It's gotten much better recently, but I'm stuck on touchwiz because of it. So if you buy a note4, be sure you don't mind that. There's nothing wrong with that choice, it's a great device and looks like it works well.
The iPhone doesn't have an SD card and you don't see those users complaining. Why not just get the 64GB version and have more than enough space for photos and stuff? For the average user (which Google is targeting) they won't need more than 32GB of space, let alone 64GB.
I too wish Google would leave in an SD slot as an option. That said, I suspect that 64GB is more than enough storage for 90% or more of users, so I see why they leave it off the Nexus line. I think 64 will be more than I'll need in the next 2 years so I'm not really concerned. I may load up a 64 GB OTG solution with movies for when I'm traveling.

As above, Google want you using the cloud. It's not that they can't do it - they just don't want to. Simple as that. :good:

But at the time same if Google was really that concerned with making people use the cloud why would they offer 64 GB? Why not stick with the Nexus 4 mottle of 8/16GB? That makes more sense in the pushing people to the cloud argument.
I love the cloud, but like most people I don't have unlimited data or perfect signal everywhere I go. Options are key. That said I will still get a Nexus because I love everything else about it (minus the non removable battery) and I've had them all so far. And USB on the go is not very convenient (I've used it for a couple years) for what most of us want to use them for. For a plane ride sure, but not practical for daily use.
A better question is.. why don't we have minimum 128 gigs of internal storage? Hell even 256? How expensive is it for companies to include this much storage? Apple does, so why can't Google?

With ART, the cache run partition for apps is going up quite a bit in size. Like double. People who needed Apps2SD on 16GB phones might still have problems with 32GB phones under ART.

That's also true. It complicates things with art. But more importantly as repeated here, Google is promoting cloud storage.

This is one of the truths. The other is that Google finds cloud storage the more viable option as well.
But in all honesty, if you seriously need more than 50GB of storage for your phone, you seriously have a problem with transferring files off of your device and to a computer/server. Even with my Nexus 4 I never exceeded the 16GB/12GB the device had available for storage.
I move my pictures and video to my external HDD once a month, move the ones I share often to my G+ Photo drive so I can always access them when needed.
I hardly keep music on my phone aside from when I make them into ringtones/notifications. I suggest any diehard music fan to simply get a PMP if you want to listen to music while on the go. PMP's have an independent battery and last FAR longer than your phone will, plus it will not drain your phone's battery and PMP's have proper quality sound compared to phones where it just works fine but does not offer true quality sound. Plus a PMP will allow more storage options as well for those with the insane music collections like I do.
Seriously between these two things, the only thing that has ever been close of a threat to taking up my phone storage is my ROM backups, which I never keep more than 2 at a time on my device since they eat up storage so often. Again they can be put on an external drive whether it be your computer or personal server.
