How to Flash Stock 2.2.3 I9000 NEE GingerBread WITH BOOTLOADER
1. Wipe data and cache/Factory Reset with CWM. (pull battery when complete to shut off phone)
2. Find the "GT_I9000_XWJVB_XXJVK_NEEJV3_Sbl.exe" file and click it and extract its contents into its current folder.
3. Open up Odin 1.7 and now select the 512 pit file I included, and select all the files in the necessary place in Odin and make sure "repartition" is selected". your odin should look like this http://d.pr/Ixt2
4. Put Your phone in download mode and connect, now hit start. (THIS IS WHERE THE ONLY DANGER IS, YOU ARE NOW FLASHING 2.3.3 AND THE NEW BOOTLOADER INCLUDED WITH 2.3.3 Just dont unplug your cable or have your computer die, otherwise you will be 100% Clear)
5. Boot up normally and let things settle.
6. now power off the phone and wait for it to shut off completely. at this point hold down "Volume down and Power" at the same time and wait till download digger appears. Open up Odin and select the 512 pit and xcals kernel(In the PDA box) I included and DE-select repartition if it auto selects and go ahead and connect your phone (Obviously needs to be in download mode) and flash.
7. The phone will reboot and once again let things settle (media scanning and whatnot). Plug in the USB cable and transfer the folders included in this pack named "Fixes and modems" and also "For Rooting" to your phone. then power off the phone once again. this time hold down "Volume Up and Power" as soon as you see the screen turn on let go of the power button and continue to hold volume up until you see CWM.
8. at this point you should be in CWM (Woot!). navigate to flash zip from SD and then navigate to the folder "Fixes and Modems" and flash "Enable CRT Lock.zip" and "update-xvjvb-home_button_fix.zip" and I recommend flashing "modem_ugjk4.zip" as JK4 seems to do the best.
9.Reboot. At this point reboot and you should be on stock 2.3.3! Congrats!!
10. If you want to root read the txt file i included for rooting!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Step Two! ROOTING!
1. I have included the file "zImage-root.tar" in the folder "For Rooting" which i already had you copy to your phone in the original instructions for installing 2.3.3 included in this pack!
2. Go ahead and power off your phone as you will need to go into download mode for this.
3. Open Odin again and once again select the "512 pit" file included and in the "PDA box" select the "zImage-root.tar". Make sure that repartition IS NOT selected.
4. Go ahead and put your phone in download mode and connect it up and hit "Start" !
5. (Dont Panic!) After it completes it will take you to the charging screen and will not boot up, ITS NOT SUPPOSED TOO, it just installs Busy box, SU, and Root.
6. at this point unplug your phone and close odin
7. now ONCE more go ahead and REOPEN Odin again.
8. Select the File "512 pit" and the kernel "I9000_reoriented_vG.beta2" (PDA) in the folder "Kernel Beta 2" (once again making sure repartition isnt selected)
9. Put your phone in download mode and reconnect and GO GO GO! Hit Start
10. Let it boot normally and Voila you are officially rooted.

woot, lemme know what you think of the guide :]

very nice guide. already running continuum 5, but nice guide

Great guide, but obviously the stock experience wouldn't live up to those of a custom ROM. What steps should we take to flash i9000 GB ROMs?

I just thought I"d post one "problem" from when I got up and turned on my phone.. for whatever reason (I have an idea) I keep getting FC of the Notification bar and email.apk ... I have a feeling it has to do with my tibu restore...I'm going to reflash some stuff and see if it fixes it.. I tried a few clear cache and dalvik cache but that didn't help, I want to do a master reset but a bit scurred. I'll wait a bit and see if anyone has any ideas before I jump ahead. I can use my phone with no Not bar for a bit LOL
Thanks in advance

I had no issues when I restored but I only restored apps no data of any kind.

Ya...i dont know i only restored apps...not doing data i know better lol anway i did a factory reset via cwm and im back in action...ill restore slowly from tibu

I let mine sit off all night, still no FC's since installing. Only issue is the rotation. Had to turn off in settings since whenever I go to settings it's in landscape mode. Mildy annoying when I want the web in landscape but if that's the only issue I have... I can suck it up lol

[HOW TO] Galaxy S I9000 ROMs (Eclair & Froyo) on Captivate - Updated

The stock I9000 fixes many issues the Captivate ROM such as 'stalling' and has none of the AT&T installed bloatware. It's very fast by comparison, and everything is working great except for the FM Radio app and the Wireless tethering app. The stock I9000 firmware also allows sideloading applications so there is no need to edit the settings.db. Some people have reported issues with bluetooth and voice call quality. I haven't personally experienced any problems but be aware that some minor issues have been reported.
If you have problems getting into Download Mode try this method:
1. Take out your sim card, sd card, battery and open Odin3.
2. Put the battery in.
3. Plug in USB. (the phone will power on to that screen)
4. Hold down both Volume keys, and then push power. Hold it and dont let go.
5. Wait for it to go black.
6. When it goes black the 2nd time release power and keep holding the Vol Down and Vol Up.
You will need to be running the stock Captivate ROM. If you need to return to stock or fail to flash a ROM use the one-click application:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
Eclair I9000 ROM
You'll need the following:
Odin, the zipped I9000 firmware and the 512 pit file from here: http://samfirmware.webs.com/WEBPROTECT-i9000.htm
Stock Captivate kernel from here: http://koush.tandtgaming.com//test/kernel-captivate-stock.tar.md5
New Method (Requires adb)
1) Remove SIM and MicroSD
2) Open Odin, load the I9000 PDA file (CODE_I9000xxxxx.tar.md5).
3) Check auto reboot and leave repartition unchecked.
4) Boot the phone into download mode (adb reboot download).
5) Flash.
6) Once the flash is complete the phone will be stuck in recovery.
7) Reopen Odin and load the stock Captivate kernel (kernel-captivate-stock.tar.md5.tar) in the PDA box and the 512 pit file.
8) From recovery boot the phone in download mode (adb reboot download).
9) Ensure auto reboot is checked and repartition is not checked.
10) Flash with Odin, the phone will boot.
11) Shut the phone down, replace SIM and microSD and reboot phone.
Older Method
1) Remove SIM and MicroSD
2) Open Odin, load the I9000 PDA file (CODE_I9000xxxxx.tar.md5) and the I9000 CSC file (CSC_I9000xxxxx.tar.md5).
3) Uncheck auto reboot and leave repartition unchecked.
4) Boot the phone into download mode (adb reboot download or boot phone while holding Volume Down + Power Be sure to HOLD Volume Down before holding Power) .
5) Flash.
6) Once the flash is complete (Odin will say RESET!) remove the battery, disconnect the USB cable and close Odin.
7) Reopen Odin and load the stock Captivate kernel (kernel-captivate-stock.tar.md5.tar) in the PDA box and the 512 pit file.
8) Ensure auto reboot IS checked and repartition is NOT checked.
9) Boot the phone into download mode (Volume Down + Power) then plug in the USB cable. If you don't put the phone in download mode before it boots you'll have to start from step 2.
10) Flash with Odin, the phone will boot.
11) Shut the phone down, replace SIM and microSD and reboot phone.
If you want root access use this (I9000) update.zip: http://www.multiupload.com/JHIFK9K80P
If you need a custom recovery use ROM Manager in the Market to install Clockwork MOD for I9000.
Froyo I9000 ROM (Early Release)
Please note that as there is no Froyo Captivate kernel the stock I9000 Froyo kernel will have to be used. Expect the following bugs:
Home Button functions as Back button.
Screen is rotated 90°. (Not a huge issue as there is a Notification button to disable rotate.)
Speaker/Headphone logic seems reversed, will only play audio through speaker when headphones are plugged in.
Proximity Sensor is not functioning.
You'll need the following:
Odin, zipped XXJP3 I9000 firmware and the 512 pit file from here: http://samfirmware.webs.com/WEBPROTECT-i9000.htm
1) Remove SIM and MicroSD
2) Open Odin, load the Froyo PDA file (I9000XXJP3-REV03-PDA-mid-CL470734.tar) and the Froyo CSC file (GT-I9000-CSC-MULTI-OXAJP3.tar).
3) Leave auto reboot checked and repartition unchecked.
4) Boot the phone into download mode (adb reboot download or boot phone while holding Volume Down + Power Be sure to HOLD Volume Down before holding Power) .
5) Flash.
That's it, you can't flash the Captivate kernel since all available kernels are Eclair.
Please post or message me with any issues you have.
I'll be updating the post with advantages/disadvantages and bugs for both ROMs so please post your experiences.
Have a link to the I9000 files and a walkthrough for this?

Grab the I9000 firmware and 512 pit from here:
http://samsung-firmware.webs.com/
and the Captivate kernel from here:
http://koush.tandtgaming.com//test/kernel-captivate-stock.tar.md5
Use Odin to flash the I9000 PDA and CSC. After that completes use Odin to flash the Captivate stock kernel. If you want root you'll need to use the I9000 root update.zip. Once the Market is working you can install the Clockwork Recovery for the I9000.

I've been running the latest I9000 firmware (XWJM2) on my Captivate by flashing the I9000 PDA and CSC, then the Captivate kernel. It's very fast, everything is working great except all my market downloads fail and Google Talk doesn't open.
Any ideas? I don't want to have to go back to the slow, bloated stock Captivate ROM.

You tried Market Enabler yet? Pretty sure the .apk is linked on XDA somewhere.
Oh, and are you SIM locked still?
What is you re market doing exactly? Don't care much fort the google talk. How about hardware function? Have you apply the mimocan kernel? Sorry about all the questions.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
How about wireless tethering and FM Radio? Do these work with the euro firmware ?
Reaver117,
Awesome Layout
thanks
@sl8125
All the hardware seems to function fine, I haven't applied the stall fix kernel because it's based off the I9000 source and the phone seems fast enough without it. As for the market, all market downloads fail with 'download was unsuccessful'.
@clubtech
The FM Radio app opens and seems to function, but if you try to scan it states 'Unable to turn radio on'. I haven't been able to test wireless tethering because I can't use my data plan until it's unlocked.
@larry996
I can make a detailed walkthrough but without a functioning market the phone is not very useful.
Is it really necessary to re-flash the captivate kernel? What happens if you don't?
Did flashing the PDA and CSC change the kernel?
Did you backup first then restore? If so which program did you use?
I have been following 2 threads over in the i9000 forum but was waiting for someone to try it on the captivate first. I noticed that some of them had to wait 12hrs or more for paid apps in the market to show up for them. Your market download error may be similar?
Did you record your APN information and add it back after flashing? I have seen that some people over in the i9000 forums had MMS and messaging issues.
If market start to work properly and there are more feedback I may give it a try.
Right now I am on stock:
PDA: I897UCJF6
PHONE: I897UCJF6
CSC: I897ATTJF6
To those wanting a guide. There is a PDF in the link that was posted.
h t t p: / / samsung-firmware.webs. com/Flash%20guide%20english.pdf
I hope you don't mind the all the questions, but when you post info like this its bound to happen.
If you don't flash the Captivate kernel then the volume buttons are reversed and the display is rotated 90°. I used the clockworkmod recovery to perform a nandroid backup. Flashing the PDA file replaces all system files including the kernel. I'm not having a problem with protected apps, nothing successfully downloads from the market. APN Backup will let you backup your APN info.

Had that with my stock rom happening where I get "unsuccessful download". After reading some forums someone suggested to clear the cache on the download manager and that did the trick for me.
Settings - Manage Apps (filter all) - Download Manager - clear cache.
Hope this helps.

This worked on the browser for me once when I was getting failed downloads. I didn't think about this.
REAVER117 please let us know if this sort your issue.
Solved it. When you apply the I9000 PDA and CSC files DO NOT check Re-Partition.
I'll post a step-by-step later tonight if anybody wants it. Running the I9000 firmware cuts out all the AT&T bloatware and adds some useful apps AT&T cut. Not to mention its MUCH faster and lets you sideload apps by default.
I would like to see a step by step so I can give this a try. Thanks for offering to do it.

Dude, be sure to mention that you're not connecting to any cell network because your phone is SIM locked, and as such can't assure phone functionality with this Frankenbuild.

Flash via PDA in Odin. Use at your own risk, you will be unrooted and fully bloated DI01 after flash. Good for returning to stock, or fixing your breaks.
Please note:
While this should remove Voodoo 4/5 (and anything else), you should take all other paths to remove it first.
Flashes:
Modem
Kernel
System
Recovery
Formats:
Dbdata
Data
Cache
Does not include:
Recovery.
You can get recovery as a separate package if you really need it, from the stickied Odin thread.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it is highly likely that you have bricked your device. You can head over to IRC and ask one of the devs there (irc freenode #samsung-fascinate), but I'm not sure there is much they can do. Just hope it did not shut off while flashing the bootloader (which is what sounds like happened). If it did, it is a paperweight.
Same thing happened to me. If you can get it back into download mode (mine went back in no problem after disconnecting and trying again) flash a full package a go from there
SCH-I500 - DL09/Deodexed/StupidFast 1150lv/AOSP Black
what can i do now ? are there any way to fix it ?
please help me
Did you try what we suggested?
SCH-I500 - DL09/Deodexed/StupidFast 1150lv/AOSP Black
Remove battery.
Hold volume down and plug in USB.
Restart the process.
Note, the first thing you should do if a firmware flash fails, is flash again! If it cuts out halfway (and I assure you that has happened to many of us here), there is no point in rebooting. You are cooked until you get a good flash.
If you are no longer in download mode, power up with [vol -] held down. If you are still in download mode, just flash again. If odin doesn't see the phone, change usb ports. If odin itself crashes, check the file you downloaded (see if it opens in 7zip or equivalent), and download again until you get an uncorrupted version
Bottom line, the moment you start any firmware flash, you are commited. Don't stop until you get it right!
+1

[GUIDE] Beginners guide to make your SGS fly! I9000 & I9000M only.

Hello guys I thought I'd make a little how to and make my first thread that really contributes to the XDA community, so here we go !
Please make sure you have access to 3 button mode(voldown+home+power) to get into download mode. If not please see this thread :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=785201 !
I'M NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOUR BREAK YOUR PHONE, ALTHOUGH IT'S UNLIKELY YOUR TAKING THE RISK BY MODIFYING IT!
Instructions:
Step 1 -
Consider which Samsung ROM you want to have installed on your phone. Currently JPY is the fastest stock FroYo ROM from Samsung.
JPY 2.2.1 ROM : http://www.multiupload.com/UHJNT0K1F2
.RAR Password : samfirmware.com
ODIN Flashing Tool : http://www.multiupload.com/4JLU4QHUV7
Download these and your ready to go!
Step 2 -
Before flashing any roms, please disable any form of lagfix you are currently using!
Extract I9000XXJPY.rar and odin 1.3.rar
Start up odin1.3.exe
Now click on PDA and select the JPY.tar that you just extracted.
Place your phone into download mode and connect via USB.
You must start Odin before plugging your phone in! Odin is very temperamental.
Now flash your phone and you will reboot into the latest Samsung ROM.
Step 3 -
Now it's time to add some speed!
You will have to decide which kernel suits you most.
Using a super fast kernel with a lagfix will really improve the performance of your device. Converting Samsung's RFS Filesystem to much better EXT4 Filesystem should stop all the hang ups etc that you will encounter on your device. Supercurio's Voodoo LagFix converts partitions to EXT4. You will also have to option to convert to EXT4 with hardcore's kernel and most other kernels.
Do you want Overclock, Voodoo LagFix plus Voodoo Sound?
Then Trasig's kernel is for you :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=823300
Do you want a stable Kernel with a ton of features aimed at purely improving your phones speed?(NOW WITH VOODOO SOUND!
Then Hardcore's kernel is for you :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=822756
Would you like a kernel similar to harcore's with Overclock?
Laststufos kernel is for you :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=811660
Step 4 -
Now you have decided which kernel that suits your needs, Download it!
Now load up Odin, place the kernel's .tar in the PDA section, connect your phone in download mode and flash!
Step 5 -
Now your super fast kernel is installed, reboot into recovery (vol up+home+power)
If your on trasig's kernel, follow these instructions:
Select 'voodoo lagfix' under ClockworkMod Recovery
Select 'enable lagfix'
It's optional but for extra speed also select '/system lagfix on'
Now reboot!
DON'T BE ALARMED IF YOUR PHONE STARTS TALKING TO YOU.
The voice is just telling you that it's converting RFS to EXT4.
Just leave your phone be until it boots into Android.
If your on hardcore's kernel, follow these instructions:
Select 'advanced ULK features'
Select 'install superuser'
This will root your phone
Now go back and select speedmod then tweaks and enable the first four
Now go back and select lagfix
Select EXT4 and reboot
Your phone will ask you to backup and restore select yes and wait for reboot into android. This may take a while.
-Laststufo's instructions will be added later-
Step 6 -
Now we have kernels sorted out so they're ready for a super fast ROM.
Personally I have tried and tested and are a big fan of:
Darkys V9.0.2 -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814091
Doc's & Stefunel's magical ROM Kitchen -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=817703
Darky's ROM is an all in one ROM that's been super optimised to make your phone fly.
Doc & Stefunel's kitchen gives to user the ability to build there ROM from scratch, you get to decide which features you want in your ROM. Also it too is super optimised!
Both of these ROMs are updated frequently so if any bugs are encountered you can be sure they will be fixed as soon as possible.
So know you've chosen which ROM to flash to your device, the next bit is easy.
Transfer the .zip ROM on to your internal storage
Now reboot into recovery(vol+up,home,power)
Select 'install zip from sdcard'
Select 'choose zip from sdcard'
Now navigate to the .zip that you just transferred to your device and select it
Your super fast ROM is now installing and this may take a while
After installation reboot
To enable overclock on compatible kernels use xan's excellent app, Voltage Control : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829731
Darky's ROM comes with it's own kernel, if you would like to stick with the kernel you chose in step 3, just follow the instructions again.
Step 7 -
Enjoy!
I have tried my best to make this guide almost noob proof, however if there's anything I've missed out or it doesn't make sense please tell me and I'll try my best to make it more suitable. As things progress I plan to update this post so please stay tuned.
Also if you like this post I'd appreciate if you clicked the thanks button
Dont forget that most OC kernels rely on Voltage Control at this moment
This is kinda sticky I think... Base steps for a new SGS users (who have some experience with Android though)

Maybe you could explain whats this Vodoos Lagfix ist all about? And maybe go into details, why ext4 is much better than the normal partition system samsung uses? Just a guess that would interest some new users.
Though you did a great job, woulda been a lot easier if i had this guide when i flashed my phone Anyway, Have a happy life.
Great Work!
I think no more details needed!
It would be hard to read!
Over the past 3 days that I've owned the device, i read many many guides, suggestions, forums etc!
Here i found everything that i would like to read at first so i didn't waste many hours on reading
You also need to add that if you load a customer ROM like Darkys, it will override your old kernal. Darkys ROM has kernal already in the package!
As a result 'advanced ULK features' is no longer there with Darkys ROM!
Its already there right above Seventh step
Excellent! Thanks so much for writing so clearly and succinctly. I have a problem:
I thought I flashed to JPY but my phone still shows JPA. I've done it both with and without the ODIN Pit file. I've rebooted a few times and even done factory wipe but it keeps showing JPA. Any ideas?
You might want to include that you do not want to have lag fix applied if your going from stock jpy to a custom rom and how to properly disable voodoo. Could save alot of headaches.

as far as I know JPA has 803.pit BUT JPY has 512.pit.
did you tick the re-partition option in odin? if that still fails you need to flash first a stock eclair with 512.pit, like JM8 and the repart option ticked. then reflash JPY with repart option un-ticked.
Thanks for all the great comments guys, obviously as things move on(new kernels/new ROMs). I will try my best to keep this post updated as much as possible.

I'll do that later on today when I get back in the house This post will be edited over the next few days in order to make it a really simple guide and the only way it improves is due to the community telling me how to improve my post. So thanks!
Hello,
I did second step and it should reboot into the latest Samsung ROM but it is not! Phone is starting and showing that "S" , a few times goes vibro. After few minutes vibro goes three times at once and phone goes off. Touching screen lights up menu and back buttons. And more: if I left phone it vibrates time to time. Pressing and holding ON button repeating everything again.
Is it really only one file in Odin is needed? Only PDA? Is there no needed PIT file? Maybe there is more settings needed? Please need info how to back my phone. I did only second step! Thanks

You could try adding 512.pit, but I decided to leave pit files out as they are no longer recommended by samfirmware.com

Great thread, thanks for this Paul!
A lot of thanks
Yes post is great and one of the clearest in the xda
Seems to be I am not a good geek because step fifth is not very clear for me. I mean explanation in recovery mode is not the very same like I have. I will give examples later on because I am on the road right now. And I would add general explanation for dumps how everything is an what for. For example: to have fastest sgs first you need flash it to stock rom, then flash an kernel, then do some tweaks in recovery mode, then again flash new suposed to be fastest rom. Something like this if I understood everything right. Sorry for beeing soo nooby I just want to help you and those new nobs who I am shure will appear.

Killed it?

Hi Guys,
Been sent over here as you're the "bees knees" at fixing problems.
I have a Galaxy S which I rooted with Z4root and had the OCL lagfix also.
Was on 2.2 but updated via KIES to 2.2.1 yesterday ( sorry can't remember the last letters).
Phone now sits in boot loop, so tried reflashing stock firmware via Odin3. Phone WILL go into download mode, and WILL accept .PIT files and .TAR files. Odin says successful, but when phone boots, the Galaxy S screen comes up, then recovery screen with the following message
E:Can't mount/dev/block/st110 (invalid argument)
E;copy_dbdata_media:Can't mount DBDATA:
your storage not prepared yet, please use UI menu for format and reboot actions,
copy default media content failed.
Trouble is the phone won't boot so can't get to UI menu to format
Is this bricked big time or is it repairable? I presume the default media is the whole workings of the phone?
I have only limited knowledge of these things, and shouldn't have played with it in the first place.
Just need to know if I ought to claim for a new one on my house insurance?
Thanks
Do you have your stock jpy firmware already downloaded?
Follow the directions in the block 2 section.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=818556
presume you did not unroot or disable lagfix .
two different file systems is why it broke .
You need 3 button download mode + stock Firmware + odin
Flash stock firmware .
Or take the phone to Samsung and hope repaired under warranty .

This one is easy to fix so don't panic.
Download this ROM and extract (Odin 1.7 and 512.pit are included), then do as follows:
-Start Odin and load 512.pit, don't connect the phone yet.
-Make sure "Re-Partition" is checked, don't change anything else.
-Load PDA.tar.md5 as PDA, MODEM.tar.md5 as PHONE and CSC.tar.md5 as CSC.
-Put your Phone on download mode and connect it, start flashing.
When flashing is done, the phone will enter recovery mode, if it get stuck at the same error, simply do a wipe/factory reset and reboot the phone, the phone shall boot normally then.

Good luck.

Thanks for this. Got that file, using Odin and it gets as far as saying "Do not turn off Target" and it has been on that for approx 15 mins now. Is that too long?

Yes, that is too long. Unplug the cable and take out the battery for 2 min. then put on download mode before you connect the phone and flash again.
When you unplug it now an error will appear, don't worry about it, just take out the battery for 2 min. and you shall be able to enter download mode again.

You are one clever fella, don't know how to thank you enough.
It worked by doing that, and now it's back to stock I presume?
Is it safe for me to root again to use things like setcpu and lagfix?
Again, I can't thank you enough. My wife was in her element nagging me that I'd just cost us a lot of money !!

You are welcome, yes, it's back to semi-stock now.
In phone dialer enter the following : *#272*your_imei_number_here#
Put the phone IMEI-number in the code above and see if your CSC is XEU, if it's XEU then you are at stock, if not then choose XEU and hit "Install", the phone should reboot and reset and you will be fully at stock.
Root with SuperOneclick: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682 Use 1.5 after enabling USB-debugging mode , and reboot, newer ones tends to hit or miss.
I think that you might need to try using the phone without a lagfix, if you can't live without it then try voodoo http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=774500 which uses EXT4 filesystem, it's way more secure than EXT2 that you were using, and it has a nice audio fix.
You will be good anyway...tell your wife that it's not easy to kill a Galaxy S, unless you use a hammer ofcourse.
I think she'll be saving the hammer for me !!
Hope it doesn't matter which 1.5, gonna try 1.5.5.
I'll take your advice on trying it without lagfix for a while, see how it goes.
Sorry to be a pain, but doesn't Froyo have apps2sd built in, cos at the moment it seems to be saving them to my phones internal memory, not internal/external sdcards?
The applications are always saved to a partition called /data , it's 2GB in size.
The internal SD-card is divided as 2GB /data and 6GB /sdcard.
some applications can be moved to the internal/external SD-cards, you can check that under Settings>Applications>Manage applications and choose an application, if the button "Move to SD card" is highlighted then the application can be moved/run from the SD-card.
Thanks, that explains it.
Phone was a little laggy at first but seems to have speeded up after a reboot.
I'll leave you alone now ( for a while at least )
Thanks again, you've been really helpful, and hopefully shut my Mrs up for a while
And that takes some doin, believe me !!

Updating to 2.3.4 firmware - if you don't want to root

HI
This is Just for People who want to flash 2.3.4 firmware or any other firmware but don't want to root their phones like me.
Again All Posts are within XDA and Due Thanks to the OP's and DEVS
I'll Try to be as informative and clear as possible ( Its more for the newbies )
First off all it has been stated this 2.3.4 is leaked and not official
So lets Begin
1. Install latest Kies of samsung > connect your phone and make sure all drivers are Installed and your phones is recognised in Kies > Backup if you wanna
2. Close Kies ( make sure its not running in the system tray) > Install ODIN
Get Odin v1.85 from here: http://www.multiupload.com/1RTGSE061G
Just extract Odin folder and keep the odin3.ini file in it.
How to USE ODIN in SECOND POST

Flashing Firmware with Odin
1. Just download the firmware version you want from above and extract the .tar file in the archive and save it somewhere
2. Reboot your phone to download mode.
To get download mode shut down the device. After it shuts off completely simultaneously press the Down volume key+ Home button + press the power button .
You should see a warning asking you to press volume up if you want to continue or volume down to cancel, press volume up. You are now in download mode!
3. Start Odin
4. Click on the PDA button and browse to the .tar file that you extracted in step 1
If the package has more than one .tar archive then they will be labelled with PDA, Phone/Modem and CSC. Just put them in the corresponding section of Odin
5. DO NOT PUT .PIT FILE AND DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT TICK REPARTITION.
Anyone ask about .pit file is a moron
Should look like this screenshot
http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/5705/odinm.jpg
If the package has 3 files it should look like this:
http://img94.imageshack.us/img94/8290/odinxm.jpg
Regardless of firmware version it's still the same methodology
6. Connect the USB cable and wait for the ID:COM section to turn yellow
7. Click start to flash
8. Do not disconnect the cable or turn off the device, it will reboot when it finishes.
It will not wipe your phone if you flash as recommended
Will I loose all my data and programs?
let me be the first to thank you
i am coming from iphone4 so all these terms and apps are new to me, and while i can use the search function a lot of times it takes several pages of read-thru to piece together what you have put in 1 concise post
btw i love the SG2 and android platform, steve jobs can toss my salad
If you flash any 2.3.3 you don't seem to loose any data... but yeah updating to 2.3.4 you do loose data and programs.
I didn't have many programs, but market restored most of them from me, and good to backup first.
Also kies gives me that I can't update firmware maybe cause its the latest one and it don't recognise the firmware.
Please be aware this is a leaked version, so if you want you could wait for the official one, I so far had no problems whatsoever
Just one noob question, SII being my first android phone, i assume that in order not to lose warranty you still have to use USB jig to reset rom counter if something bad happens, right ?

Sorry I have no clue about that But I guess you could always flash the carrier branded firmware from INTRATECH's posts.. links in my first post as well.
I guess it only applies if you root your phone (I could be wrong).

If you are using stock kernel there is no counting in custom binary,so no problem with your warranty. You can check your counter if you go to download mode.By the way usb jig is always usefull.

Is it possible to use another CSC from older stock releases together with this? ie, flashing this, and then after that flashing the multi CSC "MultiCSC OXXKF1" for instance? The reason im asking is that ppl have reported this rom to not include the nordic keyboard's for swype etc, and thats sort of a gamebreaker for me.

tanx so much!!!..i`m downloading...keep it up bro
There is one thing I don't understand how to do. Before I flash my firmware with the new 2.3.4 version, I would like to take a copy of my existing firmware from my phone first and save it to my PC. So that I have the option of putting my phone back to how it was if for some reason I want to revert my phone. I understand that I would need to buy a jig to reset the update counter.
So is it possible to save my existing firmware to my PC first?
I did try looking at the download page but there were so many different countries and carrier versions that I found it confusing. I am stock KF3 uk unbranded O2 still running 2.3.3
Thanks
Thank you tfn. Great instructions, I am loving the new update.
