[Q] List of Symbian phone in the US (SD card format) - Focus General

Does anyone know of a Nokia/Symbian phone available in the US to unlock WP7 formatted cards? I went to T-Mobile yesterday and they didn't have any Nokias on display. I would like to have my card usable again.

the nokia N8 or any symbian phone running the same version os, you cannot unlock the card, just format. I brough my microsd alive yesterday using the N8, i dont have the phone, but i have many friends who works as promotors for nokia, samsung, LG etc. so i tried the N8 yesterday.
the instructions.
you can put the microsd hotswap or have the phone turned off,
the phone will detect the microsd, and ask for a passwork/id (after it's been in a windows phone, the microsd will be locked, and as normal you wont have the password/id).
press cancel.
in the main menu, goto applications, and select office, file mgr.
after you press file mgr., you will have 3 drives to choose from, the last one should be the microsd, and it should'nt show any figures of the size of the usage.
press and hold, you will have 2 options to choose from.
unlock microsd and format.
select format.
that it.

Nokia dumb phones also use Symbian right? Would the ATT Nokia 6350 work as well?

i think symbian ^3 only, you can try them on others, it may work, but have'nt tried it.

I doubt a regular Nokia phone will work. I tried a Nokia flip phone & it asks for a password, but when you cancel it didn't let me format the card. I went through every menu option without luck.

N8 and C5 works, tried them myself, c6 and C7 should also work, or the latest touch screen in the C series.

The Sony Vivaz will also format. And BTW... I put my microsd card into laptop (using adapter) and after multiple tries it did actually format !

How did you get your laptop to even see the card? My PC won't even acknowledge that I've but the card in the slot, much less offer to reformat.
I have a perfectly good 16gb Sandisk that is useless since I exchanged my Focus for a Captivate on Newyears Eve.
Any info appreciated.

I did it on my HP Laptop with Vista OS. Could it be that I lucked out ? It was a Sandisk 32GB MicroSD card (no class type printed on card). I have also heard that many digital cameras can format them so try that as well. And even worst case try this puppy...
http://www.sdcard.org/consumers/formatter_3/

sd formatter does not work.

Well... it was only a shot at it. And only a guess, but Android phones have a nice utility built in to format micro sd cards as well.
Put the card into Android based phone (2.2 version), then Settings>SD card and phone storage>Format SD card
May work, may not but there are many alternatives to get the card to format. Just keep trying. Like I said, I was lucky enough that my laptop did format after having the card in my Samsung Focus.
Edit: Also note that XP and Vista have some issues. Read article 40, 41, 42 from this list ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital#cite_note-39
You could also try a laptop or computer running Windows 7.

2Gb MiniSD not recognised by phone, recognised by Windows

Hi there,
I bought a 2Gb Mini SD memory adaptor from 7dayshop last week, which arrived today.
I've just put it into my phone, and it isn't seeing it. Windows is seeing it. I've formatted it to FAT, and FAT32 within Windows, and the phone still doesn't see it.
I've downloaded the "Storage Tools" application to see if that helps, but I'm not getting anything. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this?
Thanks,
Jon "The Nice Guy"
(This post has also appeared on www.htcwizardweb.net)
I bought a 2GB mini SD from 7dayshop and havent had any problems at all with it (worked without requiring formatting).
Works on my EXEC, mini S and PC.
http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=777_6&products_id=100991
is this the one you ordered?
Andy
Yehr, that's the one. I've contacted their tech support and they're sending me a returns label.
Regards,
Jon
Make SURE you format the card with the "StorageTools" utility for PocketPC. DO NOT format the card with Windows.
hmmm, i don't know if it helps, but i ended up formating my 2gig (sandisk) in my camera (kodak easyshare v530). i suppose i should have thought of the phone having the format feature... the sd card adapter got stuck in the camera, and it took a pair of pliers to get the adapter out... i didn't really need the sd slot to be spring loaded anyway...
It wouldn't even recognise it as being a valid volume - so I couldn't
I did try and read it with the phone first, which didn't work, then found it worked with Windows (in a card reader), then put it back in the phone (didn't work), then back in the PC (worked), put in a friends phone (worked, then didn't), then back in my phone (didn't work), then back in his phone (didn't)... the only consistant thing was that the PC recognised it
Hey Jon, I TOLD YOU to format the card with STorageTools. The 2GB MiniSD problem is a known bug. You have to format the card in the PocketPC.
Can I get it formatted on another phone which will run Storage Tools?
I'd already started to use it on the PC prior to putting it in the phone.

Problem with micro sdhc

Hi guys! I recently purchased HTC Touch Pro and A-data 8 Gb micro sdhc class 6. My laptop recognizes the card and I format it to FAT 32, so I think the card functions properly. The problem is that the device does not recognize tha card. I updated the ROM with the latest official release from the HTC site , and I was happy finally to see my card. The problem is that after restart, the card is invisible again. Can anyone help me? Maybe the storage card is faulty after all?
Possibly man, i am sure you have another card in there. Test it, if all is ok with it, then exchange your 8GB if possible....
The same thing happened to me; I don't know if it's faulty though. It is recognized at first, and of course I can transfer files from my laptop.

incompatability with SDHC
There is a known partition problem that can destroy your Micro SD (or any other size SD) if you every stuck it into an older reader that does not support newer sizes (any HC, or even standard SDs over 1GB).
Old readers can show your newer SD-family cards, and APEAR to work, until you fill them up past the size the old reader supports.
FOR EXAMPLE:
my old laptop has a built-in SD reader. Back when I used the HTC Wizard, I bought a 2GB miniSD, and dumped files to it from my laptop. Little did I know, the built-in reader only supports SD card up to 1GB. It worked back and forth many times untilI crossed the 1GB line (filled teh SD past 1GB). Then files disapeared or could not be accessed randomly. Kindgston told me it was a known issue of some older devices (readrer/camera/etc): the older device messes up the partition, which you CANNOT fix yourself: reformatting the messed0up partition does nothing. Ship back to manufacturer to fix. Now I'm careful to avoid the built-in SD reader
So I would advise: fill your microSD up aver half-way, and see if you desktop/ laptop has problems accessing files sampled from all over the chip. If it does, this is probabaly your problem.
I think it's just the card/brand itself. The HTC site lists card brands and sizes that have been tested and proven compatible, and the A-Data 8GB isn't one of them (although the 4GB SDHC is compatible). Sandisk is the only 8GB card that's supposedly compatible, and I've pretty much found that out since I had no luck with an A-Data 8GB but the Sandisk works flawlessly.
When I first copied files over to the A-Data and put it in the phone it didn't recognize it at first, but after a couple times of taking it out and putting it back in I was able to read and write to it in TotalCommander, but when I went to play music files the player froze up solid and the card was no longer readable until I did the in and out thing again. Bottom line was there was no way that card was going to work right in the phone, but as soon as I started using a Sandisk I never had a problem.
same thing happen to me
i think the phone will not recognise class 6 memory card
i will try sandisk 8gb class 2 when i got a chance

Card doesn't work in my Fuze. Oh well, I'll find another use for it.
Wierd.... I have two Adata 8GB cards, one works in the Touch Pro, the other doesn't. Both of them work in my Sharp EM One.
hi ive been looking like crazy to fix this problem but this seems to be the only post close to it.
i recently got a transcend class 6 4gb micro sdhc (listed on the website as compatible) for my htc fuze. the fuze (WM6.1) has been updated to the new rom version (5.xx).
i put it in nothing happens. it work fine on a computer (via usb reader). i have a kingston 2gb micro sd that works fine (but is used for another device). I really want to get this one to work so its not a waste.
so far ive tried reformatting to FAT, 64K and FAT32, 32K (via windows vista formatting).. none of which work.
really annoying, i dont have any other device that uses this card and i specifically checked this brand and type with the htc fuze and seems like everyone having no probs with it.
any other things i can try? is it a faulty card maybe (but it works through usb reader)?
I am having problems with the 8gb class6 cards as well. I have tried the Adata and the transcend cards. Here are some interesting things I have found.
1. The energyrom series of roms seems to be the only rom that lets me see the card.
2. I can't access the card until it the rom loads.
3. I can flash roms from the card even if I cant access them from the phone.
I did see there was a utility to help load SDHC cards called SDHC_WM6. I was never able to get it to load right but it indicates there is some kind of software driver that might help these cards.

I saw this utility too.. but its for windows mobile 6 not 6.1.. when 6 came out it had no support for sdhc so that thing came out, 6.1 should have support from the start
of course that didnt stop me from trying it anyway... doesnt work
I have a 8 gb Sandisk- Works flawlessly. I have a 16gb Adata( class 6) that worked for awhile then stopped. Put the 8gb- works, 16gb doesnt. tried different ROM- Still same effect. I has to be the Adata card. I am going to try a 16 gb Sandisk when my funds are available.
Oh- the 16 works fine in the microsd/SD card reader......
SDHC Class 6 works in HTC Jade
I have a jade and both cards that refuse to work with my fuze work just fine with the htc jade. I am not sure if it is a hardware problem or an issue with some software such as the sdhc.dll.
My thought is it is probably software. Why?
First the class 4 cards work just fine. In fact I am currently using a Dane-elec 16gb class4 card.
Secondly I am able to get intermittent class 6 cards access if I use one of the NRGY roms.
I have been using a 8gb Adata card that I bought from newegg, and it has been working flaslessly since november.
I recenlty bought another 8gb Adata from meritline, and this one does not get recognized by the fuze.
I then read in the above posts that somebody used Total Commander to copy files, so I opened up Total Commander, and the card is shown there.
I closed the the program, and now the File Explorer can see the card as well.
Maybe you can try the above steps and see if it works.
edit: actually, I have to plug in and out a few times for the phone to see the card...
I also have this issue with my transcend 8GB class 6 microSD.
HTC Touch Pro (T-Mobile), upgraded to EnergyRom. After upgrade, able to work perfectly. After few hours (the phone of course went into sleeping mode), then the phone was not able to read the card, so starting application installed in it makes the phone hangs.
After a while, the application (10-15 mins) was able to start, then everything is normal again. Very confusing.
At the moment I am assuming it's due to the sleeping mode, somehow the phone (software??) was not able to 'resume' reading from the micro SD.
Note: Previously somehow it clashed with the keyboard mapper software (pro_fuze_keyboard.ZIP), then I uninstalled it, then it was fine. Then I install another version of keyboard mapper (Shlomki TouchPro Keyboard in Fuze ROM.cab), then it's fine again, so I now stick with this mapper. However above issue is still happening.
I read some thread about changing some registry (pnp** set to 8196), so I set it. However still the problem persists.
I haven't tried other suggestion to tweak other registry values. Here's the thread on Hermes device: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=294324&page=29
I am wondering if it's really class 6 problem. Is there anybody having the same issue with 8GB class 4?
Note: my PC can read the card without any kind of problem.
I put the microSD into N95 also without any problem.
and i have the same problem to touch pro will not recognize my sdhc 4GB class 6, and i have no problems with 4GB class 4.
HI Bobby,
Were you able to get the Transcend 8gb Class 6 work on the HTC Fuze? I have the same problem. I upgraded the rom from the HTC site and I could see it. But later I plugged the card using the adapter to the laptop to copy some files and when I plug that back into the phone, it says "Not Installed". My happiness of not losing 20 buck was only for a couple of mins Any help is appriciated?
Can you give me download link for the energy rom which actually worked with the card?

I had somewhat of a similar issue, wondering if anyone else has seen this?
8 Gig no name brand MicroSD card in my TouchPro, all of a sudden I had less than 1 gig left, using Resco I couldn't see a thing taking up all that space but it was all gone.
I put the card in the transflash adapter and looked at it on my desktop Windows Explorer and saw the following folders in \Storage Card\Program Files
one directory named (*#LD*))#KDP|} with some text after it
another directory named (#*(Y%*(#(*#*(@#kKD* with some text after it.
NEITHER directory could be renamed, moved, deleted, or anything.
Formatting the card hung the format process.
Finally, I put the microSD card back in my TP and all of a sudden Resco Explorer saw these directories and so I just deleted the Storage Card\Program Files directory (no programs in it) and formatted the card and everything was fine.
Anyone else ever seen this?

How to reformat storage card?

So, I've decided to return my Focus back to AT&T because I simply can not live without a physical keyboard...I'm going to keep using my Fuze for a while. I've been using my 8GB SanDisk storage card in the Focus without any issues, but now I want to REformat it so that I can use it my Fuze again. Is there a way to do that, or did the WP7 OS make permanent changes to my storage card? When I put the card into the reader on my laptop, it just says there's no card installed. I knew that I wouldn't be able to read/write info on the card after using it in a WP7 phone, but I want to format it back to "regular"...how do I do that?
Hate to be the one that breaks it to yah, but you cant. Not at this moment at least. Now there is other ways of doing it such as sticking the card in a Nokia phone with at least a S60 OS and it will do it for you. Other than that, hold tight and wait for MS to come up with a way to do it without a work around.
I was afraid of that. I thought I remembered reading something about using a Nokia phone, but I wasn't sure if it was still necessary. Thank you for your response...I'll hold onto this 8GB card until a solution comes out to reformat it.

I ordered this item http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.27330 to try and revive a WP7-locked microSD. I have no idea if it will work or not. If it doesn't then I'm out $6.
It hasn't shipped out yet (from HK or China). I'll report back when I get it maybe in January.

Me too. Please report on this thread, thanks!
The LG Windows Phone 7 has a keyboard! Just saying!
I was able to reformat my first SD card using a Nokia phone.
Well the other solution is to use the card in another Focus or something that can format it, because if the computer can't see it, you can't format it. Not even with formatting tools. Now I haven't checked but you might be able to format it booting into dos and using a utility but instead of going through the hassel I just gave my dad the 16Gb card when I got my 32Gb card.

But wouldn't putting the card in another Focus format it once again so that it couldn't be used by anything but that Focus, which would continue to make it unusable by any other device?
yep but it's better than having a guitar pick laying around lol I'm just glad I didn't format the other 16Gb card I had laying around. Oh and I meant to say my dad's focus
I was able to re-format two micro-sd cards using free software and a flash memory reader on my laptop. Go to download.com and look for Easeus Partition Master.

microSD cards that were formatted in Windows Phone 7? How did your computer even see them?
Well the flash memory is built into my laptop but an external-usb one would work just as well. Download and install the Easeus Partition software. Insert the memory card you want to format and run the software. It will recognize the memory card. I believe you can just right click on the card and select format. Hit apply and it's done.

I think you are missing the point. If Windows,Linux and OSX cant even see the card, how exactly did you format the card? Remember that Windows Phone formats the card to make it unreadable on all devices but Nokia Phones and Windows Phone.

Disappointing but not all that surprising given the track-record.
So far, only Nokia phones and some WinMo phones (such as my AT&T Tilt) have been confirmed as being able to reformat the micro SDHC cards that were used in Windows Phone 7 devices.
I heard Sony Vivaz will format card as well. Don't know for sure as I have not tried, only heard that it does.
I have the same problem. I just hate the fact Focus lock the freaking micro sd card.

Samsung ver 1.3 micro sd questions

Hey guys, I got my phone and the sd card about 4 months after the WP7 launch. It went smoothly and I enjoy WP OS. My Question/problem is I have multiple card readers and adapters but windows 7 both on my laptop and desktop won't read the card. The card formats into the OS on the phone and works fine but when I get into computer management it just shows H:/ no media. I have tried the windows fix for code 10 and 43 and driver updates, uninstalls, reinstalls of the usb spots in device manager w/o luck. I have two targus media card readers with sd and micro sd slots. windows recognizes card in with the sound both with sd and micro hookd to either reader. I use the adapter also on my laptop with a media card reader in it w/o luck either. I am trying to get it to detect so I can format it to work with my 3ds. Please message me or email [email protected].

I assumed you already read the Samsung Focus wiki on the SD card topic.
Once you put the microsd, it becomes part of the OS and the card [format] becomes unreadable under OS/card readers. Removing it from the phone would result in phone data loss, the phone would ask for the card and not work anymore until you hard reset. So make sure you got all your media backed up before you do this.
Now, if you want the card removed from the phone and used somewhere else, it's kinda tough. Basically, if you search through the forum, you'd see that you need another device to unlock (re-format) the card:
- a Focus with a custom ROM (these have the card unlock utility installed)
- a Nokia symbian N or E series phone (N95, E7x etc) supporting microsd
- a camera (which may see the card and format it - not all brands may work)

128gb micro sd card problems

Hello All
I bought a 128gb micro sd card for my z3 compact only to find out that i will need to format the card to fat32, which seems to be impossible now, i cant even format mat it to anything now let alone to fat32.
I have tried as many way to do this as possible but i keep getting errors of "format didnt complete" or some variation of that.
I have tried using cmd prompt, GUIFORMAT, windows disk managment and multiple youtuve videos.
I have read that the phone can take this type of card if you can format it to fat32. If someone has achieved this or has any advice, it would be greatly appriciated.
Thanks
Get a refund as soon as possible. You almost definitely received either a dud or a counterfeit. If you do end up being able to format it (any file system will do) run this:
https://www.raymond.cc/blog/download/did/77/
If that reports it's stable, try formatting it as NTFS in Windows. FAT32 can't handle files larger than 4gb, and exFAT isn't compatible with Android, iirc.
you sir are a great man.
i think the card is messed up, i cant even open it in windows, acting if its not even there. Even in the properties i get no deteials, everything is 0. Putting it in my phone even says sd card is damaged.
I keep reading people have these cards in tehir phones and tablets. Are you aware of a way to do this?
im sending this card back and getting either a smaller one or research into how others have managed to do it.
If it is a sdxc card, u tried to Format it via phone? Never had problems with my 64gb card
I have 128GB card too. Just put it in the phone and let it determine the type it wants. After insert the card, open setting - storage - erase SD Card. Then the 128GB should become exFat.

I'm not sure what you're asking here exactly, but when a card works *properly* you can just insert into basically any device and it'll format it in a few different ways, not unlike a usb flash drive.
I've had your exact problem before, though. I bought a 128gb sd card from a seller with a really high rating on Ebay, but it was for $55 and I should've known better. It was almost definately a 32GB or 64GB disk that had been re-partitioned to look like a higher capacity drive. The 'new' disk would destroy any data copied over to it after a certain limit was reached, a limit that got smaller and smaller the longer I held on to it. I'd format it, start copying, the copy would fail, the disk would eject itself, Windows wouldn't recognize it until formatting it, rinse repeat forever. I wasn't even trying to fill it to the brim, 'just' my 55ish GB music collection. I ended up actually finding one for $80 on Amazon, which ended up working flawlessly.
If you don't mind my asking, where did you buy it from? How much did you pay? What was the seller's ranking and review history like?

I have had similar experiences myself with micro sd cards from eBay. It seems to be inconsistent regarding particular sellers and the quality of the cards. I would imagine there are sellers also getting scammed by wholesalers claiming to have legitimate cards.
Needless to say, I only buy micro sd cards now from sellers that are
A) in my home country, where I know they are bound by local law regarding faulty goods
B) selling brand name micro sd cards in their original packaging.
I might not save as much money by playing it safe, but it's worth it to be able to rely on a product and have a local warranty to back it up.

I've had problems with Busybox installed on phone and it corrupting SD cards somehow, "Busybox on rails" was the fix for me, also it seemed to fix the damaged??? SD card after a reformat.
I also experienced similar problems with my 64gb card. It worked flawless in my Phone for some months, but when i put it in a defective card reader and connected it to my NAS, the card seemed dead. My Phone said the card was corrupted and it wasn't able to format it. My Windows PC didn't recognize it at all. Also "sd formatter" which never failed in the past, couldn't get the card back to life.
So I checked the card with fdisk under linux and I could see, that the partition table was totally messed up. I deleted the partition table and after that the card was working again.
No problems in the last 2 months. And since I have a fully automated daily backup to my local NAS, there is no need to exchange the card "just in case".
