1080p rips + DVD Catalyst + Moboplayer = AWESOME - Xoom General

I finally got my rips working NICE!
Downloaded the mechanic last night in 1080p. Converted using DVD Cats highest encoding, shrunk the file from 17gb to 7gb. Plays perfectly on my 55" LED TV from the hdmi out.
just got the incredibles 1080p, used HQ2 setting sincer I wont be watching on my TV. Went from 7.5gb to 2.6 and looks/sounds amazing on my Xoom
Highly recomended

I agree 100%. I just re-encoded The Incredibles using DVDCatalysts 4 HQ1 Profile and it looks and plays Awesome, it's 1.92gb (this is the Blu-Ray of course). I also have (Cars, Monsters Inc, Avatar, Percy Jackson, MegaMind, Kung Fu Panda & Toy Story 3

yes, awesome on my xoom

MoboPlayer Rocks too!

Dvd catalyst is a must have if you own a Xoom

Just converted a 14 gig 1080p rip of TRON to a 2.8 gb .mp4 using HQ2...
wonder if I can watch it on TV without it lookin bad...
Its nice, remote into my home desktop and do all the converting/download/unrar while im at work

Converting using HQ1 now, seems to be going twice as fast as HQ2, will report back when its done

Are you guys using the free version or did you splash the $10? I don't mind Handbrake but it's not the best/easiest GUI.

Howdy can you tell me what version of dvd cat, im still on the beta for mkv rips...

ya im using the beta too

+1 for Moboplayer & DVD Catalyst. I paid the 10 bucks and it was well worth the money. Handbrake is good, but DVD Catalyst just makes it too easy to get great quality rips
The only thing I would add would be a command line interface so I could write a Powershell script to automatically encode a batch of movies in my library.

Yes, you can. you can add a multiple files in multiple locations. You can even add folders (in you want to convert a complete series season for example) of seperate files.
The only problem I am having is that if I have a multi language, it doesn't convert it to the chosen language.
btw: I have the full paid version. The USD is cheap for me in Europe

I ripped a couple 1080p movies last night using DVD Catalyst with the Xoom HQ2 settings, and for some reason when I play them back on the xoom it WILL NOT stop fast forwarding. Just skips in about 22-25 second intervals like I'm holding the seek button....Anyone got a clue what could cause that?

Are you using moboplayer?

sounds like a botched conversion.
did you test on another player on your xoom to see if it does the same thing? are these rips from disks you own? or are they downloads off the net?
did you make any adjustments to the stock settings in the program?
were you multitasking on the same computer that was also doing the conversions?
what movies?

[Q] How do you play Video?

This may sound completely stupid, but how do you play video on your xoom? I mean there isn't even a dedicated video app. How the hell do you release a tablet and expect it to compete with the I pad without a native video player or support for most video formats? I just transferred a couple of avi files that don't show up anywhere because there's no app to play them.

Great just what I was afraid of. I have almost a 1TB of movies/videos/TV shows. So my only options are to convert them all or use a non tablet android app to play unsupported files. Thanks for the info though guys.

Ya i just tried a couple of files i had already converted for my moms ipad. a couple were DVDrips and those played pretty much fine using rocklayer. But one was a converted 1080p music video. The music video played fairly well but there was a noticeable difference in the frame rate from the standard def videos.it wasnt at all choppy but it wasnt as fluid as i would have liked. If this is what im going to have to expect from HD video then im definitely not sold on this tab.

just load any dvd into your computer click go and when its done it will have you connect the xoom and transfer it
then click on the gallery app and there it is. the quality is great too

You can use Handbrake, a free video encoding program. I found that redoing h.264 high profile to h.264 main profile(see the link) and dropping motion estimation method to diamond, Subpixel ME & Mode Decision to 0, and avg bitrate to 4000 kbps makes for a lower encode time(20ish minutes for 1 hour on my i7 920 win 7 64bit). Excellent quality too vs original.
I'm attempting to convert a 720p copy of inception using handbrake right now. (6 hrs estimated time) what a pain in the ass. I set it to the APPLE preset. Which I'm hoping/assuming is what one would use for the ipad. Ill let you guys know how it turns out. If it does work won't be so bad as I can just set a bunch of files to convert in queue while i sleep.

Iceytea posted a handbrake preset for Xoom. I am trying it now and it is going much faster. 2 hour 720p movie took me 1 hour estimated with Apple universal preset and with this one 45 minutes. Can't comment on quality yet as it is still converting.

Just tried to rip my blu-ray movies to mp4 in 1080P, and play on my xoom. It works great.
Not to be a sour grape, but FYI this is the typical spam post I've seen in other tablet forums. Read the fine print on "About Company". They'll likely land a few catches, which should be enough for them to perpetuate the spam.
Anyone doing anything esle to rip blurays to their xoom?
I am ripping my own blu rays with Handbrake. Reducing to 720p settings at 2500kbps. Avatar looks great on it. I originally ripped it at 1080p, but I didn't really see any difference and it made the file a lot larger.
I've been using DVDFab with moderate success.
Yes, bluray can play on xoom, but you need convert it to mp4
the dvd catalyst beta has had no problem converting my blurays to 720p. Best $10 I've spent recently.
Going to try the 1080p presets for some hdmi viewing soon.
I've been ripping BluRays using DVDFab as well. Reduced the screen size to 1280X720, FPS between 22-25 and all movies have looked flawless. Audio in Stero @ 96 and raised the volume to 180%.
DVDFab is more expensive than this one as they can both do this job great
There are soo many programs out there, I found Videora that works fine, just set it to iPad and it makes a Goog MP4 file that works fine on my Xoom!

Can Handbrake really rip DVDs and Blurays? I thought it states that it is not a ripper...
EDIT: I use AnyDVD and AVS Video Converter. Unfortunately, it does not support True HD audio tracks yet I also have Cyberlink Media Suite 8 but it has only very basic settings to choose from. I think the key is to use the DivX compatible .mp4 version, not the h264 which is in my experience choppy on the Xoom. But honestly, since I have most movies ripped for my iPod @640x480 I think I'll keep them at that resolution
Using AnyDVD HD and Handbrake and I am ripping blu ray movies I own. No issues so far.
Ripped Serenity, Sector 9, Avatar, Despicable Me. Tried a variety to test it out. Working great.
I actually started putting them on an HP MediaSmart WHS server and they stream great on wifi to the Xoom.
Using tvirsity to stream off of WHS.
>Unfortunately, it does not support True HD audio tracks yet
Most converters allow "pass-through" audio. Monolithic converters aside, True-HD and DTS-HD can be processed by a number of standalone tools, to either their DTS/AC3 core, or be converted to AAC/MP3.
>I think the key is to use the DivX compatible .mp4 version, not the h264 which is in my experience choppy on the Xoom.
DivX now uses H.264 in MKV/MP4 container; it's called DivX Plus. It likely retains the old DivX (H.263) codec for backward compatibility. In other words, "DivX" the brand no longer equates to DivX the codec. Anyway, when people encode with DivX, 90% of the time they aren't using DivX, but XviD, which is the open-source, and superior, version.
You are probably using either H.264 baseline or main profile, which is simpler to decode, and (for now) works better on the Xoom.
>Using AnyDVD HD and Handbrake and I am ripping blu ray movies I own. No issues so far.
The latest HandBrake 0.9.5 doesn't support Bluray PGS subtitles, and I haven't seen indication that the nightly builds fix this. As long as you don't need subs, HB is OK for BD rips.

[Q] lack of video codecs??

i know there is a converter and some people having problems with mkv and i know about h.264 and im starting use my atrix as multimedia i watch some movies in "dvdrip" i doubt since seems quality it lower, i try with an anime dvdrip .mp4 and i cant watch so im wondering wich software i can use to convert in the desire format without lose quality. i have any dvd converter.
so not sure how to convert and what settings. this start annoy me since my n1 play several formats. sorry if this was covered but i didnt find the right solution.
thanks a lot
I would appreciate an answer to this as well.
I have found that the Affix will play most of the .avi movies that I download. I haven't had any luck with the few mp4 or mvk files I've tried.
If anyone knows how to convert any format to something the Atrix can play, please let us know..
Thanks!!

The issue is not codecs, it's Tegra 2 cannot handle high profile HD decoding (at least at the moment)
If you stick to Main profile and no B-frames you will likely be ok. Which also means you are likely having to re-encode your video.

strange dude, my atrix plays all formats, i think that have one, that only comes audio, but this video was 1080p(HD) and i dont made even 1 update in my atrix
it's not that simple.
just because you can play one individual 720p h.264 file doesn't mean you can play them all. there are different profiles / bit rates etc.
For h.264 Tegra 2 supports main profile but not high profile. Xoom owners have done all kinds of tests on this. To date no video player has been able to overcome this.

So.. 1080p looks great but..

Well first of all, you're wasting your time on 1080p. You want 720p. Second of all, it doesn't take too long to copy files over and you can even split them up using something like virtualdub.

That is still quite compressed.... Regular 1080p mkv's are anywhere from 10gb to nearly 50gb.
A 6gb 1080p rip is still probably very good quality.

Yeah right.. A 45 minute 720p TV show is just over 1GB, a 720p bluray movie comes out to about 2 - 4GB, 1080p is double that.
Even DVD rips of full length movies are bigger than 500mb if you want quality.
I'm not sure if this is on topics, but I download 720p anime mkv(most common format) and it's playback is very choppy on galaxy tab, and I've tried stock video player, mvideoplayer, and mobo player. I have to spent time re encode those files with handbrake or ripbot to make it plays properly. but the exact same file play fine on my galaxy s phone without any conversion.
anyone know what's the problem?and ideas how I can fix it? the goal is to just copy my downloaded anime to galaxy tab and play it smoothly, not spending extra time to re-encode it again.

yeah, I spent some time reading several topics and the consensus seems that this is Tegra 2 hardware problem? so there's no hope for new firmware update to suddenly make it playable smoothly without converting?

Recode Settings?

Hello everyone,
I got a 64GB Acer Iconia Tab A500 about two weeks ago. I am looking to recode my bluray discs to watch on my tablet. I have looked over the forums and haven't found much in terms of settings. I recode using Handbrake, but every video I recode ends up being choppy and lagging on the tablet. I am getting the feeling that the CPU is lagging behind when playing the videos.
I have tried MX Video Player, Mobo and Dice and ask the will yield the same result with the same video.
I am running it full stock 3.2.1, but could root if need be.
Thanks in advance!

Okay, so I recoded the first video and it ended up as an MP4 and in Both MX Video Player and Mobo they both said that the video cannot be played. As if it was an incompatible format.. I thought that was what MX and Mobo were for!
I tried using the 720p High Profile, I'm recoding one right now using baseline, but I have no clue what the difference is between the two.
After not having much luck using Handbrake to re-encode for any device (including the A500), I just threw $10 at the problem and bought DVD Catalyst. I use it to convert movies for every device in my family (Acer A500, Nook Tablet, Nook Color x4, original iPad, iPad2, HTC EVO 4G, and even a first step in re-encoding for Nintendo DSi XL), and it works like a charm. The developer hangs around XDA, too, so there's excellent on-going support for the product.
Hope this helps.

Hope this helps.

I've actually gotten some success with one of the presets from WereCatf. I was able to get Planet Earth to look pretty and not stutter on my tablet!
I ended up using 720p Baseline for anyone else who's wondering.
