[How to] Make a copy of your OTA update file (for backup/testing purposes) - Atrix 4G General

Hi Everyone,
It was brought to my attention that there really isn't a clear explanation anywhere (as far as I know) on how to capture an OTA update file once you've downloaded it (for backup and/or testing purposes of course). So I've decided to write up this brief and simple "How to guide".
1. You need a rooted device
2. You'll need to download and install root explorer or Super Manager
3. Go ahead and download the OTA update BUT once downloaded DO NOT INSTALL yet, hit your back button or simply tap install later.
4. Open root explorer and navigate to the folder that says cache.
5. You'll see the OTA update file in there tap and hold then select copy.
6. Paste file to your external sd card (from there you'll be able to move it to your PC or where ever.
7. Since you have now successfully made a copy of your update (purley for backup purposes of course) navigate to your settings>about phone>system update and this will bring back the option to install the update
Any questions or suggestions I would be more than willing to answer or make edits to the OP if anyone sees a step I skipped or missed
Thanks to DarkRyoushii for the idea
Thanks dLo GSR for the super manager suggestion

Hopefully that user with the dev device that received a 1.75 update (claims) hspa is enabled can push that update out to all of us...

he won't, he said he's said too much already :/

For those too cheap to buy root explorer, this can be done using ADB as well, right?
Might be good to post up instructions using that too

Just checked... nothing for me so far.

cool, i heard a new prerelease update should come

if you don't want to buy root explorer, Super Manager is a good free app as well.

So it just like nandroid ?
Its a full back up of the system? (ghost?)
Its only make a backup of the update? no backup of the system?
Edit:
OH, its backup the Update that available.
but how do i make a nandroid ? without a recovery..

step 1. get a recovery.
step 2. make nandroid.
:3
I'm sorry that was mean, I honestly don't know if its possible without a recovery though :S

Ok, I receive the 1.75 message and did the steps. There were two files in the cache folder and I copy the most recent one. I hope it is what we are looking for.

DID YOU SIGN UP FOR THE BETA?! If yes, please remove it and respect the NDA that you agreed too. We are trying to set a good example at xda by respecting motorola, regardless if it helps us get a bootloader solution earlier. :/
If you didn't sign up and just got the update randomly.. I'm amazed XD

what area do you live in, where you running .26 or .57, did the update pop up or did you check for it manually? Also I don't believe that to be the update. They're usually zip files and the .57 update was around 17mb... weird if that was your only file

he said that there was 2 files but he only grabbed the latest one.. so I'm assuming he only picked up the market.apk (probably from a market update) instead of the .zip

I live in Mexico. I have an unlocked Atrix. I need to be rooted because I use the hotspot app a lot. I didn't sign up any beta or NDA. I just received an OTA message to update to 1.75 two or three days ago. I haven't do that until I'm sure I can continue rooted. If there is anything else I can try please let me know. The other file is not too much different of this one.

as previously mentioned in another thread, press okay and let it download, it will then say install now or install later. YOU MUST CLICK INSTALL LATER. then you can goto the cache file and just incase you get the wrong thing, copy EVERYTHING from the cache folder like instructed in the OP of this thread.

Update problems

I tried to install the new update on my Hero. I was rooted with the universal root program. During install my phone freezes and i get an !. I unrooted with the same program and I still get the same thing. My wife's stock hero installed just fine. When I try to install again it says the download is corrupt and asks me to re-download it. I've tried it several time with the same result. Any suggestions?
I had to re-install the old update from htc.com to get back to factory. I then updated to new one OTA, but now I can't root it anymore. I was using the universalandroot also and it won't root again. I'm going to try a different root method and hopefully it works.
I think I might know why your downloads are classified as corrupt.
If you used Regaw's root method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572 towards the bottom there is a section called

I don't think that's it. Cause I didn't use that method. I read somewhere on here that if you've removed/uninstalled some of the sprint apps, then it's not going to update because the update involves updating one or more of those apps. When the update doesn't find those apps, it fails.

Maybe that's my issue. I did get rid of some of the stock apps I don't use.
Does anyone know what stock apps may have been updated with this? The only one I can think of would be peep. Is there a place I could get that .apk to reinstall and try to update again?

No its not. Your phone will still work just fine without it. But if you do want to incorporate the new fixes, install nfinitefx's new .7 ROM that has all the fixes/updates in it, and you won't lose root this way either.

How to disable Verizon's OTA updates

I'm sure there are some frustrated Incredible owners here that are upset after the last OTA update and really don't want to go through this again until they know for sure what is in the update, so I did some searching and found out how to disable future updates in your Dinc. I understand that you don't have to run the update but the constant nagging from the update and waiting for the solution to disable it is frustrating so. I found this on CDMA GURUS
Edit: 11/26/11 This new method comes from iowabowtech and so far this has worked. Thank you iowabowtech!
-Open Root Explorer and make sure you're mounted as Read/Write.
-Navigate to /system and long press on build.prop, then select the "Open in text editor" option and look for a similar line that specifically includes the xxxxxx:/user. Edit that line to this:
ro.build.fingerprint=verizon_wwe/inc/inc/inc:2.3.4/GRJ22/222219:user/release-keys
This should make the phone think it's up to date. That said though, I doubt there will be any more updates to this phone.
Alternate method
This method had been known to make the data run constantly so I suggest that you freeze your downloads with a program called "anttek". If you go to download something to your phone, you will have to unfreeze downloads first. This seems to improve battery life also.
To turn OFF future OTA updates, there is a file in the /system/etc/security folder. The file is named "otacerts.zip". Rename it "otacerts.zip.bak", or whatever you want. That will prevent future updates.
You can change that filename using ADB, the root explorer app, or a terminal emulator app of choice right on your DROID. I use root explorer because it is easy and fast. But that's just me...
Using Root Explorer... If you are using Root Explorer to do this and it says "the file system is read only" Just touch the white button at the top that says "mount r/w" and then try it again.
If you are here trying to figure out how to disable the notification for the update you already have (for Froyo) but have not installed yet, then that's in another thread. Here it is... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=836120
thanks for the tip! i tried using root explorer like you, but its telling me the .zip (and anything pertaining to security folder for that matter) is read only and denying me access to rename. how'd you get past this?

If you are new to this, then the easiest way to do this is with Root Explorer. It's only a few bucks and it is WELL WORTH IT!!! You can do so many things with RE.
This could come in handy right about now.

Another noob asks: adb is free, right? (or Android Commander for windows) I want to save my precious bucks to donate to ROM authors.
ps. OP is 2010--seems like the 2011 fix is the same. Correct?
ADB is free. Since I can't post links, if you Google "what is adb and how to install it" the first hit should be an addictivetips article that got me started.
As for a free app that will do the job right on the phone, ES File Explorer is free and works well for me.
So this is definitely useful, except there are threads that claim this messes with battery life as the phone will continually download the update, it will fail whatever check otacerts.zip does, and try again.

This says it didn't block a recent OTA on the Thunderbolt:
http://teambamf.net/showthread.php/2571-Does-renaming-otacerts.zip-block-ota
If I keep ignoring for now, will it come to a point where VZW can force the push and mess up my root?
So just for clarification, does this prevent it from downloading the update or just prevent it from notifying you?

It prevents the download. The post up above says that your phone will try to download the update over and over if you rename the otacerts and I have actually experienced this. I downloaded an app called "anttek" and fixed this issue by freezing downloads. Whenever I go to download something, I have to unfreeze downloads but that is no big deal because I hardly ever download anything to my phone. Also, I have experienced better battery life with the downloads frozen, up time is at 18 hours and I still have 25% battery left on a standard battery.

Surely there is a better solution than this. As it stands I can't use my AOSP rom (inc deck) because of the constant battery drain induced by the constant downloading. I dont find the above solution a compelling one, and considering there's no real way to accept an update on AOSP roms it looks like I'm going back to sense for now.

I am using Redemption ROM 2.3 and changing that line did nothing for me. I still get the nag. I've rebooted twice and dismissed the update at least 10 times.

Update Notifications

Hey guys. I know that there is an available atrix update, but I don't want to update. Att keeps sending me annoying messages to update. How do I get this to stop?

It's easy to block the update if you don't want to lose root and also want to get rid of the annoying messages.
Just rename the otacerts.zip and cacerts.bks certs in system/etc/security.
The update will download (you must let it download), but fail the auth check and not install.
This also turns off the reminder notifications.
Easily reversible if you want to get updates later.

[Q] Looking to DELETE OTA Gingerbread

Hi all,
I downloaded the OTA update to my rooted DX. After reading about Verizon going after Wireless Tether users I've decided that I want to wait this out for now. Does anyone know the location and the name of the update files? Thanks in advance...
Fyi, I have got wireless tether to work successfully by toggling airplane mode. No tbh patch needed.

Thanks for the reply.
I keep getting reminders that the file has been D/L'd if I would like to update "now" or "later". The last time I choose "later" it said that it will remind me in twelve hours. I've decided to freeze the updater using Titanium Backup to buy me time. I wonder if "Factory Data Reset" will remove the D/L?
Trying to learn about SBF's, flashing, bootstraps etc. Stuff I never tried because I only used Z4root. If anyone can recommend any reading or particular videos to watch, it would be greatly appreciated. I did read one from this forum. Thanks all...
Delete a system app like city id. The update will fail
^
he's right. OTA updates check for the bloatware installed on the phone. If certain ones are missing, the update will refuse to install until you put em back
Really? I thought before the download is started that the phone is remotely checked for bloatware and that once the firmware is downloaded that it will update the phone regardless of any bloatware. Any thoughts?
Thanks for the advice....
It is, but it also needs the files to install. Without them, it can't install the update. You will get about 33% of the way, it will fail, and reboot
The OTA file is stored in the /cache directory. There are actually two files, a .zip file and a .crc file with the same name as the zip file. I think the .crc file is for the system to check file integrity of the zip file.
I used cache cleaner to wipe cache, but it wouldn't get rid of these two files. File managers like Astro, OI, and Estrongs didn't show these two files in /cache, but when I used Root Explorer I could see the files there and I deleted them. I don't know if they'll re-download. If they do, and I get the reminder pop-up message, then I'll just do a failed install (I used Titanium Backup to "freeze" CityID, Blockbuster, and Backup Assistant). Once the install has failed, it should stop popping up the reminder message.

Can you SBF back to .340 after taking the OTA? I want to reinstall the rooted .596
With my tab I was nagged constantly about an ota. Deleting the files only means it will download again. Removing an app only meant the install failed. No matter what I kept being nagged. I had to do some build.prop edits to get rid of the notification completely.
Sounds like you use your data for more than just checking things here and there. Maybe you need a tether plan.
Install 2.3.3 and get a tether plan.

Necessary system apps and OTA

Hi guys,..
Does anyone have a current list of the necessary system apps for zenfone 2 Ze551ml? I just want to make sure I haven't removed anything that will hinder an upcoming ota update.
I have searched but there are a few different lists and I don't know which one is the right one.
Thankyou in advance
Opening uninstill I'm currently showing 165 system apps -3 which I moved there
So does 162 standard system apps sound right?

Thankyou so much! Is there an easy way to extract just that folder back into the phone... Like replace existing, just so I know that if any system apps were missing that they had been put back in. Just seems easier than cross referencing one by one. Sorry if it's a newbie question, I only just rooted for the first time this year
Just flash the full firmware rather than the ota, then you don't have to worry about it.
