Porting ClockworkMod - Kernel is 1.8GB! - Android Software Development

Hey guys,
I am trying to port the ClockworkMod recovery to the incredible S, and everything goes fine until the last step, getting the files neccessary from the recovery image using mkvendor.sh works, but it produces a kernel that is 1.8GB (!), so when I go to build, the recovery is far too large and it aborts.
Anyone know why this might be happening? Surely the kernel can't be that big, the recovery partition is only ~8.5MB and the dd of the recovery come out the same, so how is the kernel so huge?
Any help will be greatly appreciated

Try this,
Get a working ROM for the Incredible S, and extract boot.img
Extract the the kernel from the .img and place it in your
Code:
<android-source-root>/out/target/product/<phone>/
-- overwriting the 1.8GB kernel (ie recovery-kernel)
Then run
Code:
make recoveryimage
to pack it into an img

I got a file called boot.img-kernel.gz which wouldn't open as an archive so I just renamed it 'kernel' and that got the image built... now to see if it flashes! thanks for the pointer

Just made something for you, note: haven't tested it:
Kernel Theiving
How to:
- Install Nand version which has the kernel you want.
- Run "extract_kernel.bat"
- Install Nand version you like, and want to keep.
- Run "install_kernel.bat".
- Et voila!
Now, you only have to use "install_kernel.bat" if you flash another rom.
Note: You need adb installed on your PC

I read the batch file and
you have created a folder called boot under data folder and pasted the zimage
so everytime when we boot out Hd2s it going to replace the zimage with the one in boot folder, so i guess its going to delay the booting process (correct me if im wrong) so is it possible to delete that folder after booting our Leos?

No, that's not what it does. it mounts the boot partition temporarily to /data/boot, and after it's mounted, adb copies over the zImage file, and overwrites the preexisting kernel image, after this, the partition is unmounted. So it's not repeated at each boot.

made sure it was connected..
then ran the extract batch file
installed the nand build i wanted...
then ran the install Kernel.bat
and it works a treat!!!!

Is all that done on the phone? It seems you installed the kernel on the phone somehow. I'm clueless about adb, I tried to use it before but was dumbfounded by it all.
Do I need Eclipse? Downloading the SDK stuff...installing JDA SE and it talks about Eclipse.

[DEV] Kernel Compiling

Hi all! I'm not a dev but i really want to do something for this phone so i'm trying to build a custom kernel.... if anyone have tried the same report here the issue, i will do the same!
I have the pre-requisites for compiling a kernel set up. However I am more interested in getting ClockworkMod Recovery working on our phone as that will encourage developers and we can then start looking at getting CyanogenMod 7. I made a topic here asking for help but I haven't received any replies yet.
I have just compiled a kernel but it doesn't work.... this because - i think - i used the initramfs provided by leshak for the i9000.... now i'm trying to extract from phone......

Hi Skin1980, I also compiled a (stock) Kernel two weeks ago - problem is, Samsung does not use the "normal" way of storing it in a boot.img file. That is why I wasn't able to push it to the phone or at least fastboot it. I would be glad to hear from you how exactly this is possible, if you find out.

I used the redbend_ua you can find here to write zImage to bml7.... how do you do with initramfs that is missed when you build the kernel?

Have you managed to extract initramfs with redbend_ua?
If you don't mind, please take a look at this post. There is a step build/tools/device/mkvendor.sh device_manufacturer_name device_name /your/path/to/the/boot.img. Because Samsung doesn't use this boot.img building a recovery looks tricky. Any suggestions would help.

I dumped the bml7 partition, i see that inside there's a zimage... but i'm not able to extract this f u c .......initramfs!!!!!

and if we can find the initramfs i think that is not difficult to modify the recovery to allow unsigned zip files installation
Perhaps, we could use parts of the following method:
h**p://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=HOWTO:_Unpack%2C_Edit%2C_and_Re-Pack_Boot_Images
To extract the ramdisk from the boot.img, they do the following:
Then, look for a bunch of zeroes followed by the hex 1F 8B (which is the magic number of a gzip file). Copy everything from the first line of the file, through the zeroes, and stopping at the 1F 8B. That is the kernel. Everything from the 1F 8B through the end is the ramdisk. You could save each of these files separately. In order to see the contents of the ramdisk, you need to un-gzip it and then un-cpio it.

Which file are you referring to? I have some time, I can give it a shot.
EDIT: I found "initramfs.c" and its object file "initramfs.o" under GT-I9003_Kernel/kernel/Kernel/init from the Samsung opensource tarball. Don't think that helps us though.
@rb210: I mean the dumped bml7 partition. It's an image of a partition with a kernel and ramdisk in it, or did I misunderstand something?
PS: You could try "SGS kernel flasher" from the market. It's got a backup option - look if it does produce the same image of the bml7 partition (I tried it, it did a backup image of around 8MB on my SGSL, which is about the size of bml7, as far as I remember). It would be faster and easier to carry out than using a script.

Ah I see what you mean. I was trying to figure out how to extract the initramfs from the opensource package from the Samsung website. I figure if they're providing the kernel and platform, there's got to be an initramfs somewhere. You'll are talking about trying to extract it from inside the phone itself.
I'm still not sure how this is going to fit in with porting Clockworkmod as per that method in the blog post because it's still an initramfs and not a boot.img. Getting custom recovery is vital to attracting development for this phone, we should not make the mistake of overlooking this.

Custom Recovery INFO

OK . We all i believe find it chaotic to organize in forums now. So this is a thread just for ideas and problem with cwm or twrp on our device.
All that i have found now is that recovery.img is somehow backed with boot.img. So i have to ask if there is any developer that can look inside this.
Help appreciated. We (developers) have already compiled TWRP and CWM ( me via ubuntu and clockworkmod recovery builder) and none of them is booting.
You might want to look at xperia p boot.img??? Same processor u8500 same screen size. I'm a noob. Just said what I felt. Coming from xperia device where our recoveries are always packed inside boot.img
In ramdisk . /sbin/recovery is where our recovery binary is present.

also coming from xperia forum and for My xperia U and have also novathor u8500 and i have asked dev to explain mothod used in XU for port this method to GIII mini but no reply from him now in XU the recovery are in tar and flashable to phone without odin or another flash only by ADB + run me script in commande window inside recovery tar we have unziped recovery ( icone ....) and some files relative to phone ( fstab ..... )
How is it going? Did everyone stop developing or are you guys just moving in silence trying to figure things out?

From what I understand, You just need to write a piece of code in the ramdisk init files to execute the recovery during boot. No need to modify the kernel.

If any one is interested i got a dumped ram disk also a got it rebuild-ed,
and yes the recovery scripts are there plus the pngs etc.
I also believe that the device has 2 recovery's, they are the same one just acts as a backup.

now we have also one with CM device info the device have not CM rom and also have not CM kernel her why i posted this comment because when you extract stock recovey you find kernel part and when you extract boot.img find recovery part now this 2 files perhaps have dependency to work together ? is an idea do not yell at me :silly:

I sent info about device to that developer. That app is now supporting our golden for full backup incl boot & recovery.img with .zip from here. Only problem is we dont have a working custom recovery to flash that .zip with :/
as Faria wrote above should change the recovery that is in the kernel and the same meter and the same rom in it and in the kernel for which you go just tell me that the two are complementary if a move (size , addition, retirees), the other answers are more about the two is that one feature that the other is that we will say to his control as .
now change I believe that both will adjust in any case theoretically

Yes although to my knowledge noone has actually done a restore yet. He's fixing some minor bugs and will be releasing a new version at some point.

Convert TWRP Backup into flashable rom zip
I found these instructions that explain how to take a TWRP backup and turn it into a flashable zip file. This would allow someone to create a "factory" rom pre-rooted to be flashed.
For TWRP Backup
Transfer the TWRP backup from Phone to PC.
You’ll see a file named system.ext4.win which is the System partition backup of your device. Rename it to system.ext4.tar (Changing its extension from .win to .tar)
Extract the system.ext4.tar using an archive software like Winrar or 7zip.
If your TWRP backup is not in compression mode, you will directly get the system folder, else you will get a file named system.ext4, which should be renamed again to system.ext4.tar and extract it to get the system folder.
Take the boot.emmc.win file and rename it to boot.img.
Now collect a META-INF folder from any custom ROM which is made for your device. Make sure you get the correct Meta-Inf folder, else the Zip won’t work and might worsen the condition of your device.
Select the META-INF, System folders and the boot.img and right click your mouse and select add to Archive.
In the Archive settings, choose the extension of the compressed file as Zip (Make sure of this part)
Now you can use this Zip file to flash it on your Custom recovery.
we dont have the meta-inf folder...there is one in the update i got, but i dont know if this id the right one.
and we dont have custom rom to get meta-inf from.
also the main thing is, that i cannot unpack the system win file when renamed to .tar i dunno why (i got latest 7-zip app).

What they primarily want is the "update-binary" which is device specific. I don't remember if the update had one....I did take apart an update-supersu.zip and it uses a script as it's update binary...thought about trying to convert that. Theoretically you could take a meta-inf for another device's rom...and use it's meta-inf making sure to replace the update-binary. It also has an installer script that tells it to mount system and data....extract files from the zip and where to put them. I learned a bit when I was trying to make an update.zip to fix my build.prop.
It untar'd fine for me on my linux pc:

i allready build some roms for my older device, so i know what it is about.
For the proper rom zip you have to make the updater script with all the simlinks and metadata ...in the latest update there were no simlinks in the updater script...
without them you can brick your phone.
for example simlinks from 4.4.2 Os from zte V5

Reboot or power on till you see the alcatel screen pop up....right away hold down up arrow and it should go into recovery.

Hmm odd. I had to reflash it. For some reason it didn't take the first time I flashed the second build TWRP to my Idol 3.
What partitions should I backup using TWRP? I'd assume: Boot, System, and Data? Should I include System Image too?

The default of boot, system and data should be fine for personal use however if you have not yet rooted please read here first! http://forum.xda-developers.com/idol-3/help/want-to-able-to-install-ota-updates-t3163745
So Awesome! best looking twrp Ive seen yet xD. Also, works well too. I havent tested backing up data, but I did a successful restore of the system and boot So far so good!

Yes, you can try
tested on htc desire 816, cm13
unpacks and repacks kernel and ramdisk successfully, but didn't extract or repack the dtbs (device tables image, kernel 3.4) so the repacked image won't boot.

Hi, I test it on cm13 and I unpack recovery.img for HTC desire 816, I think it work fine.
If the apk didn't work properly that's means the boot image doesn't not following Google's standard format so you'll need to find other tools to unpack and edit your image.

I can unpack, edit, and repack successfully.
but, it wont boot.
I used official twrp 3.0.0-0 recovery.img and cm13 boot.img both, tried without editing.
just unpack/repack/flash.
boots straight into hboot, which is what happens if I build a boot.img or recovery.img without dtbs.
I pointed to the anykernel2 link because I know its scripting handles dtbs.
the whole kernel device table thing is new to me, and so far only on this device, so I'm not very savvy with dtb work. been lucky enough that it was preconfigured in the build system for cm.

only unpacking and repacking,didnt help on my device but yet again nothing else helps me compile kernel for this idol 3 so i guess this app works just not for me, bad luck :/

Well, this is a beta version of my apk, only for testing, I use @osm0sis tools ,this doesn't mean that you have bad luck my friend, this is due to the limitation of @osm0sis tools, but I will find another way to make it universal apk. Okay

The scope of my tools is for Google's Android image standard as defined in the bootimg.h header from AOSP/CM. My tool forks have the widest support available for images which are standards compliant, supporting all commonly used ramdisk compression formats.
Supporting Sony's ELF, MTK's labeled and Samsung's headerless image formats along with the standard images (not to mention Samsung's and others' various deviations based on the standard header) and having the script/app differentiate between them would be a very large and difficult undertaking indeed. If that's your plan then I wish you the best of luck in your efforts.

Thank you for adding the appropriate credit back to your post. Patching, cross-compiling and scripting has taken significant work. :good:
The only other thing that I'd ask is that you do not use the name of Android Image Kitchen or AIK in the title of your app. I'd like to suggest maybe "Image Editor and Flasher" as a snappy alternative?

it's a useful project, definitely worth a little testing and feedback.
besides, i remember what a pain it was getting my xda account eligible for posting the project i was all gung-ho about sharing (optimus v boot from sd card if i remember correctly)
sharing is cool, but a lot of the feedback tends to be annoying when there's no logs or other usable information, just "it's broken" or "can you implement for me on device XYZ."

Did you have an unlocked bootloader ?
nothing changed on the device, unlocked and still s-on, I'm not sure what went wrong the first try.
PEBKAC error probably
(problem exists between keyboard and chair)
I release AIK&Flasher v2 , I use @xiaolu unpack/repack tools.
