Nope, but you could download an app from the market to stream music

I think a few things have been rushed on the play so as to get the ball rolling on the xperia app store ready for the ngp\psp2. shame realy cus this could have been the phone that put SE back on top as THE must have phone.

Most radio stations are streaming live over the internet, offering a better quality imo.

Streaming radio waste megabytes though.
I am only on a 500mb data plan per month.
One full day of streaming radio will eat all of that up !

HTC hero no FM radio?!?!

I heard it doesnt have a FM receiver is that true if yes is there any way i could still receive radio signals?? I hope there is cause thats the only reason for me not buying it.
That is correct. No FM-radio in HTC Hero. That does not work in the subway anyway so I put my hopes up for a good webradio application.
i hated this about my iphone as well (currently have a hero coming) but it isn't that big of a deal because web radio works where ever you have a data signal; usually FM radio in buildings is ****e most of time due to signal quality.
If you download Beebplayer from the market you can "Listen Live" to BBC Radio 1,2,3 etc and also "Watch Live" BBC1, 2, News etc. Aslong as you're a TV License holder.
Web Radio is so much better than FM, you don't need headphones with you just to be able to play it. This is no biggie to me really, as said previously, reception is ****e.
web radio might have better reception but not all local fm stations are web based plus data signal quality and range may not always be strong. Besides having two options is always better than one.
using web radio will eat up your monthly data allowance more quickly then a fat kid eating a Big Mac

I've got an Ipod Touch and really dislike the "Apple politic", so really need a change and thought HTC hero (with FM) would have made this difference! I don't consider web radio because of the web access and don t need a 3G connexion. FM should be basicly on any multimedia stuff!!!!
FM Receiver on all the HTC's I have used have always been poor reception anyway, so I never used it
hmm, just found saw this: http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/06/nexus-one-teardown-reveals-possible-802-11n-radio-and-fm-transmi
what chipset is mounted on the hero?
radio streaming cannot be compared to fm radio. it consumes way more battery and internet bandwidth..
Nexus one is the top model from HTC today...
Hero is based on qualcomm and like Magic does not have FM receiver, so only way is online radio...

...not completely true
On modern smartphones most FM receivers are integrated in the bluetooth chipset.
The Hero hardware uses BRF6350 chipset form TI, which in fact has a FM receiver subcircuit. FYI: the X1, a.k.a. HTC Kovsky, also uses this chipset and has FM radio function.
See here for more details about the chip:
http://focus.ti.com/pdfs/wtbu/ti_bluelink_6_brf6350.pdf
These chips require some firmware to interact properly with the main CPU.
So without a proper firmware file activating the FM subset, there'll never be FM radio for Hero.
There might be also hardware parts missing to get this ever working....
P.S.: Nexus is also based on Qualcomm.

That may be true, but it's bumped a thread that's about 7 months old. And that's just annoying for many people.
Although its good information
and what about http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=13380058&highlight=hero# ?

And now we've bumped a thread over a year old, 2.5 years from original post...
This person in this post here claimed to have my app running OK on a cdma Hero, but then had some problem and disappeared : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18460535&postcount=1462
I don't know if the gsm version is the same.
AFAIK, the only issue is the audio routing. RSSI looked OK on good stations I think.
I'm here due to an email I received, but for further discussion, perhaps my thread is best: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22492334&postcount=2246

Sirius App

New app for Sirius on market place. Can anyone install this and confirm it as being compatible on EVO. It was one of the apps I was worried about losing when I drop the iphone next week for the EVO.
http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/28/sirius-xm-android-app-hits-the-market/
Thanks.
Why would it not work?
dont know. just going off of what i read in the article. said something about list of confirmed devices. so....
doesnt hurt to have a confirmation.
I downloaded this app on my EVO 4G. It works fine.
awesome. thanks.
is it xm or sirius?
Both. Same company now.
I just got an email from Sirius yesterday that there Android App is out. I was so excited. It should work on the EVO. I had it on my TP2 and loved it. I can't wait to get my EVO next week.
works on my HTC Touch running Android too.

I verified it. It is running XM. Though they are the same company now and have merged many of their channels, they still have a few subtle differences. Mainly for me, I like to listen to the Opie and Anthony show. It's available on XM, but if you have Sirius, you have to pay more for the best of XM package.
works on my htc hero. wonder how much for a scrip. to just stream to your phone?
I'm pretty sure you have to get a full subscription, and then the add on to be able to stream.
for me, its no big deal. i already got the sub since i have it in my jeep. but i added the stream add on for when i'm in my wifes car, or at work. i know a lot of people like slacker and pandora, and i do to. but for 3 bucks a month, its a good option also.
I have it in my car and online at the beginning was always free with having it in your car than they changed it.. So I've had a subscription for a while. I just got offered a deal when my sub was up if I prepaid for a year.

It's running perfect. Listening to Zeppelin now.
Loads quick and good quality.
I can't even locate the app in the Market. Typed in 'Sirius' 'XM' 'satellite' 'radio' ... nothing
On what phone Android the Hero? I can't wait to get my EVO. My new Jawbone Icon is suppose to play MP3's and Podcast so I hope it works for Sirius. On my TP2 it was under the market place under Sirius I believe. But for my Android I got an email link I think where to get it from..

My review:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6863627&postcount=9
Sirius would be such a great company/service if they did ANYTHING or added even ONE suggestion to their devices from their customers. It's too bad, such a great idea for music and uncensored talk, but of course run by NYC a-holes...
I'm I blind or is there no Howard 100 in this app?? Come on, half your subscribers are here for that channel alone!

App idea

I have an idea for an app that somebody could create.
I had an iPhone for 3 years and there was an app called F-Stream for it. It worked flawlessly. I mainly used it for streaming radio stations to it over the cell network. There's a radio station about 150 miles away that carries my favorite college team's football, basketball, and baseball games. But I've yet to be able to find anything that will stream this radio station's feed to my Android phone (AT&T) Captivate. When using F-Stream it said this radio station was a WMA stream at 20kbps (its low because its only sports talk radio, no music). I have listed the link to the radio feed below. If anybody knows of an Android app that will currently play it please let me know. Or somebody could be awesome and create an app that'll do it, I'd pay for it and I'm sure tons of other people would to, as the entire iphone community knows about F-stream and loves it, I'm sure the Android community would love it too.

I dont think it does. I downloaded aonline radio and every time I try to enter that URL I get an error message stating that "Entered Channel URL Not Working..."
Did you actually try it out or were you just stating that you think that aonline radio will play that link. Aonline radio playsback MP3/M3U/PLS/AAC/AACP channels,shoutcast/icecast feeds. The link I want to play back is a WMA feed. Not supported.
Thanks.
Can't see if will ever happen as it would run into licensing issues.

Netflix and free slacker

Netflix
If you didn't know Netflix is now out for our phone and it plays full videos! It works great with WiFi and teh 4Gs. I haven't used it on 3g yet. The app is free on the market and has a monthly subscription for $7.99 a month and you get the first month free. I already watched some shorties watching shorties and some anime, it works!
Also yo... get on Facebook and favorite slacker radio they are giving everyone one month of free service from may 16 to April 17

nexus 4 and fm radio, will it support it? sadly no...

According to specs on play store there is no fm radio (analog).
so, like old nexus, google doesn't support this feature but...there will be a ready and cabled chip? i hope so...
If someone has or will have confirm, please write here
Pretty sure they disable FM at a hardware level. Aka no chance
Looks like FM is going the way of IR

Looking at a few of the newer devices iPhone5, and the new Nokia Lumias, looks like the FM radio is dissapearing, like infrared a few years ago.
Guess there is not enough space for everything

on nexus there isn't because google aim to increase cloud service in every way. For example, tune in is a better alternative than analog fm tuner in this scenario.
I want only know if they disabled by hw like samsung's nexus or by sw like nexus one.
Ever since I found the "tune in radio" app I haven't even cared if the hardware actually has FM hardware or not. streaming the same FM stations on this app doesnt even require headphones to be plugged in like most real FM solutions.

tune in analog or digital radio is ireplacable!!!
radio is indepenant doesnt need internet to work.
while in sea you can receive radio probably not internet.
Any way
easily substituted by wired or bluetooth fm radio.

this is the point.
I wouldn't have issues with omitting it due to the cost. However, all recent ones have had a bluetooth chip with built in FM but with a disconnected antenna. Connecting the proper pin to the headphone jack can't cost that much.
The only reason I can see for this is to force people to use data due to carrier pressure or the radio tax in parts of Europe on devices capable of FM reception.
FM is much quicker than tunein radio. I have tunein radio pro and it finds stations hundreds of km's away as local but puts local ones as far away. It also takes time to buffer/etc and prevents you from scanning location stations quickly. So at best its a mediocre replacement.
They r doin away with FM radio Cuz u can't make money from it.. they got plenty of apps u can use. ex. "I heart radio, tune in " which they can make money off of data use....

Looks like I'm going to whoosh through my data allowance with no FM radio, I listen to it all the time
FM analog radio is important for me. Streaming use internet connection and here, at my country, it is not cheap. I've got 350MB a month, so I have to look after data waste.
Silly question, ¿how many data use streaming fm?. ! hour listening to radio station = x MB.. What is,, not exactly but nearby, the amount of MB used???
Thanks.
+1 for having an FM radio.
Google re getting a daft as apple - Missing things off there devices - Being Vanilla doesn't make up for it.
Put an FM radio on FFS - Not that hard or costly

Radio isn't "Old Tech". Hundreds of millions of people listen to the radio in their cars every day. Its free music, it's the weather, it's the news, its entertainment, all without the use of a data plan.
It's not a deal breaker for me that the N4 doesn't have it, but its still a bit disappointing.
