Buy Dell Streak or not? - Streak 5 General

Hi,
I am planning to purchase a Dell Streak but I have a few questions before choosing it.
I have read that the camera is really bad - since i used to shoot photos with my phone, will the streak suit me especially when taking pictures during the evening/night indoors (in a restaurant, at a party...etc)? How about the flash - is it really useless and weak?
Also, how is the video recording during the night and in low light conditions? Is the video choppy and the frames are skipped at times? Is the video watchable and most importantly can it been shown to people without being embarassed at the video quality?
I am a big fan of the streak's big screen but I would like to know more about the camera photos/videos before making a definite choice. What are your opinions?
Thanks people!!
Note :I forgot to ask: does the streak feel heavy? I mean if you hold the phone when on bed for 1-2hrs, do you feel any strain/pain in your arms afterwards? I just noticed the streak is 220g!!

i love this phone for everything except the camera
Gud when light is good but in low light its terrible.
( i prefer my wife's iphone to take pics in low light. )

Camera is acceptable, but camcoder is terrible. and this is the only issue I have with dell streak.the rest of it is awesome. I love its screen when you look at under sunlight, impressive.

Argh,if the iphone (i guess you mean the 2g/3g) camera is better than the streak, then this is a big problem since the iphone's pic quality is not that great itself, and if the streak is behind the iphone, I can't imagine what crappy results to expect when shooting pics or recording movies in low light...wow!! this is really unexpected!

What about the videos - are they really choppy and skip frames and lag at times? I've watched some videos on youtube and the video quality in low light seems very bad with lag all over and are choppy.

coming from an iphone 3g the 3g's camera is definitely better, when it's a bright outdoor day.
the 3g is just as bad as the streak indoors with low light conditions. the streak has a led flash which helps a bit, but leds arnt ever as bright as xenon flashes (but you can leave the led on, i use mine more as a flashlight than as a camera flash)

If you're going to use a phone camera for low-light photos, the Streak is not the one for you. I think if the photos are immportant to you, stick with a P&S camera.
However, if you want nice phone with 5" screen, there are no others.

well this is really a dilemma...i really like the huge screen since I check my mails hourly/surf the web a lot and the streak seems destined for these tasks...but on the other side, the camera is a really let down. I come from a htc hd2 with a powerful dual LED flash, and have used a nokia n8/n73/sony k800/satio which took great pics in low light, and I don't know if I will adapt to the streak's camera since it seems to be more mediocre than the phones I've used.
Still the choice is a real difficult one - big screen vs camera...haven't decided yet.

screen for sure! camera is ok

i went from iphone4 to streak and havent looked back, the camera isnt as good and compares to my iphone 3g that i have for backup, if you want a really good camera on a phone then you have to go with the iphone4
as for browsing, i love to browse on the streak, its so much nicer then on the small iphone screen.

I sold my iPhone 4 to get a Streak and now I woner why I didn't just get a Streak to begin with. Pictures are not that big of a deal to me, but the ones I have taken have been satisfactory. Noticed some lag when panning quickly when taking video, but if I remember correctly, the iPhone 4 had the same issue.

I just got the dell streak. Coming from an Iphone 3gs and my wife has an iphine 4. In terms of quality of the pictures the Iphone 4 is much better particularly in indoor situations. The streak is perfectly acceptable in well lit areas or outdoors. Indoors and low light not so good even with the flash.

I forgot to ask on the 1st post - does the streak feel heavy? I mean if you hold the phone when on bed for 1-2hrs, do you feel any strain/pain in your arms afterwards? I just noticed the streak is 220g!!

I don't find it that heavy, I hold it in one hand and use the other to touch the screen. I also hold it both hands and use my thumb to navigate. It's heavier than most phones, but still very holdable !

I just recently got my streak coming from a sony ericson xperia x10. I'm on the stock 2.2 baseband 347. so far I've rooted it and absolutely love it. I dont think I could ever go back to anything smaller than 5 inches for my next phone. I also own a viewsonic g-tablet and the streak is the best of both worlds, a powerful android phone with the size and feel of a portable tablet

I can understand the desire to have a convenient all-in-one solution, but if you value the quality of your photos and vids, you should use a camera and not a phone.
I just don't think you're going to be able to find a phone that's as good a camera, as it is a phone. There's going to have to be a trade-off somewhere. I know that when we 'know' we're going to want to take, keep and show good vid or photos; we bring the camera.

Not true. There exist there economical phones (s-e mainly) with truly magnificent cameras. And the phone functionality is so much better than any smartphone.
And i do not believe that when buying a 500 euro 5inch phone, it is acceptable to have a next-to-horrible camera.
i too am considering getting it second hand and the only thing that gives me piece is that there could never be a worse camera that the one i have now in htc's touch pro 2

Get the Dell Streak. Its the best of both worlds. Tab/phone

The phone is great, but the camcorder sucks! Pictures are ok quality, video is just terrible. If you want a better camera, wait for the newer phones, the ones that are about to come out seem pretty good in that department, also since nokia and M$ are joining forces, expect some super duper phone that will blow you away within a year or so. You could always get the Streak as a temporary phone, then sell it, after all, it's kind of cheap for what it can do.

If you are getting the Dell Streak 5. A bluetooth earpiece is a must. You cannot unlock the phone with one hand while driving.

And a stereo bluetooth is a perfect combo with the streak for calls, music, watching vids..

Here are the first photos I have seen on the web.

(edit: more shots in post #6 below)
It probably doesn't come as a surprise to most of you: the iphone is still king.
It is sad that such an expensive phone with an 8M pixels camera still makes such poor pictures in 2010/2011, when my 10 years old 3M pixels Fuji camera (which is far from high end) has been making perfect shots for the past 10 years.
After the iphone with its great camera and the galaxy s with its great super amoled screen, HTC comes out with a new high end dream phone: old gen LCD screen and old gen camera. (Oh yeah, it does have a faster CPU and more RAM - this should make me feel much better, considering the Desire/N1 was almost unusable with its bad performance..... /sarcasm off).
Seriously, there's no excuse when the iphone can do so much better with a 5M camera.
Ok, these were taken with an engineering sample. But knowing HTC, do you believe this can improve when it releases in 2 weeks?
PS: and for those wondering about the video quality, it isn't better than what we have seen from the Desire, but the fps is more stable thanks to the faster cpu: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8202670&postcount=83
HTC simply doesn't give a rat's ass about photo & external speakers quality. That's all fine and dandy, but then they shouldn't label their devices with "HD" when they clearly aren't hd.
It's a shame that Nokia N8, whose only downside is that unlucky Symbian OS, will be cheaper than Desire HD. Actually, it's the other way around, it's a shame Desire HD will be more expensive than N8.
think imma skip this one. In fact, I'll skip all HTC's untill they start using better cameras and better speakers.
Photos were taken under poor lighting conditions, which effect the white balance, and noise and they are blurry (slow shutter speed).
Not the ideal test imo... I'd rather wait for some outdoor performance.
Iphone - King?
was just wondering... since when has the iphone become King of pictures?
I dunno about Iphone4, but when I compare the 3gs with my Desire, the Desire clearly takes better pictures, and in bad light conditions, the Iphone wont even shoot a decent picture (no flash) :/
If someone is the king of picture/video it must be sony ericsson.
Even though, I still think HTC makes quiet okay pictures outdoors in daylight.
Haven't heard of Iphone beeing better at this?

Well, we are talking about new phones coming out in 2010/2011, so of course I am talking about the iphone 4 and not the old iphone 3. Furthermore, keep in mind that you are comparing a new 2010 Desire with the old iphone 3.
In every comparative review I have seen the iphone 4 camera always comes out on top. It takes pictures that are at the beginning of something worth keeping, whereas the HTC cameras are just "okay", as you say, good enough if you want to show something to someone, but who would want to keep such horrible pictures in their photo album?
The iphone 4 shots, while not perfect, are something you can keep.
Anyway, we'll be seeing some more shots soon; I am still hoping for the best

The 8MP quality is quite poor, but the advantage with such a high resolution, is that once you resize the pictures and make them smaller it isn't bad at all anymore.
I think a good test would be to take a pic with the iphone 4 at 5MP and the same pic with the Desire HD at 8MP, and then resize it to 5MP to compare.
(reload the page if the pics don't load, or go to the above link and then reload the page. The remote site seems a little strange at times)

There goes your problem. The iPhone 4 really is very good at taking pics.
They became the king of pictures since the iPhone 4.
The video capture is also very good. Even better than those mini camcoders.

Saying that, the lighting condition wasn't fair in the Desire HD review.

very true.
My laptop at 1600x900 is pretty high res, but i still need to make the 8mpx shots smaller to see the whole pic. After resizing the quality looks pretty damn good. Much sharper.
I hate iphone but fact is iphone pixture quality is brilliant compared to any htc phone. I'm fan of htc but do feel let down by their camera, video and sound quality. Having said this I well probably still purchase dhd as everything else they do pretty well im comparison to any other smartphone.
Htc always promises great things but tend to short change thier loyal customers with their cheap skate antics.
Early indications show that the camera in the HTC Desire isn't noticeably better (if at all) than the Desire - have to say that for a high end phone costing nearly £500 this is disappointing at best!

Not sure I agree with that. Most pupular perhaps but certainly not the best. Nokia have always had Apple licked in this department and I can't see that changing any time soon.
One of the big let downs of the Desire for me was the camera and audio quality, if this has not been improved I see no reason to dash out and buy these new models.

Right now all I am concerned about is the audio quality for recording. The evo had sucky sound quality from recording video, because of the stupid AMR codec, have they fixed that yet or what?

judging from the videos posted here, the DHD records in AAC format, with a sampling rate of 44.1 KHz at 65 Kbps. I think this is an improvement, but im not sure of the EVO's output. If someone knows where i can download an evo clip to compare..

It would be preferable to compare with the original clip, not one uploaded to youtube. I'll do some snooping.
edit: looks like the EVO only does 8 Khz compared to the DHD's 44 Khz. Not sure on the bitrate though.
second edit: EVO records audio at 12.8 kbps compared to DHD's 65 kbps. Huge difference.

If the figures are correct then it's very promising. However the youtube clip is not making me excited about the quality. I certainly hope it's better then the evo but I have lowered my expections as far as the camera, video quality is concerned. This way I won't be dissappointed. Simples.

The i-Phone may now be good at shooting but it's definitely not the King.
Have you seen shots and video taken on the Galaxy S?
They are amazing.
This is part down to a very good sensor with a nice low 2.3 f-stop making it ideal for low light shooting.
I was hoping so much for the Desire HD but if what is so far seen to go by there is nothing to whet my appetite.

According to the dozens of reviews and comparative tests I have seen, the Iphone 4 always comes out on top.
Yes, the Galaxy S is good (most of the time comes out 2nd behind the iphone4), but Iphone 4 is better.
For example, here is iphone 4 vs android video comparison (galaxy s, desire and nexus one): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_v4EJT3aTg (at 0:22 you can click on each phone to get the big video for each).
As you can see, the iphone 4 is far above everything else (but I agree the Galaxy is not bad).
As for photo, here:
Galaxy S: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_p9pmpIdf0q4/TI5bjpyyxuI/AAAAAAAAAi8/tfNGrB8CsGI/s1600/S16.jpg
Iphone 4: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_p9pmpIdf0q4/TI5bi08vgZI/AAAAAAAAAi0/9-6SJY9Bkzw/s1600/I16.JPG
And there's more here (iphone 4 vs galaxy s): http://androidhd.blogspot.com/2010/09/test-iphone-4-vs-samsung-galaxy-s.html
Seriously, once you have seen the many comparisons on the net you can only see that the Iphone 4 being better really isn't open to discussion. (and no I never had and probably never will have an iphone).
edit: but I agree, the galaxy s is very good in low light conditions. Many complain about the absence of flash, but it does much better without a flash than most other phones with flash do.

Apologies and I say this with all sincerity but I don't need to see or read the comments on the net.
My remarks are based on actual usage of the GS and first-hand observations of the Desire and i-Phone 4 operating at the same time.
I don't know who took the shot using the GS but they most certainly did not use the phone correctly... It is exceptionally bad.
All it takes is for the lens to be very slightly to the right/left/up/down of a another shot to pick up differing light patterns which in turn can cause all manner of display issue.
I have no issue whatsoever with the i-Phone's camera, indeed it very good and a marked improvement over the i-Phone 3g.
But from a personal point of view I find it difficult to accept it being termed 'The King'..... But each to their own and I most certainly would not knock your opinion or observation.

Well, to me dozens of different testers (some amateurs and some professionals) can't be wrong. Especially when the iphone 4 never failed to come out on top.
And I really did a lot of research on this as I was about to get a GS myself (before deciding to wait for the Desire HD).
But of course, I am glad you are very pleased with the GS. This is the most important in the end, isn't it.

So lets summarize the Galaxy S:
- Buggy GPS, sometimes it works for some people, sometimes it doesn't
- Laggy phone, sometimes it lags... sometimes not...
- Buggy camera, sometimes it works great for some people, sometimes it doesn't...
Iphone 4: it just works.

The Camera Quality Thing...what´s your solution?

Hey folks!
I´m one of the most enthusiastic Streak user within us (coming from an HD2 ) and I´m loving my new phone...
BUT: As all of you surely know, the camera is a not-so-funny-joke compared to phones like the HD2. So after many months where nobody has talked about this, my question is: What are your solutions/workaraounds for better pictures?
I´ve just tried the obvious: camera360 & MagicHour. But no, it doesn´t make it much better.
Last but not least: Is there some hope e.g. for getting some better drivers? Hope dies last, I´m praying for some very kind devs with similar intentions
Hmmm everyone knows the Streak's camera is no great and I think this has to do with the camera module itself. Look at HTC's camera, they mostly suck especially in low light conditions and in video recording at night - till now even if there is a great amount of developpers working on htc phones, no one has successfully modded them. And to tell you the truth, considering that the Streak is not that popular for modders, chances are really really weak that someone will work on it.
I think Sony Ericsson X10/Arc/N8/Infuse/Mytouch4G Slide are among the best camera phone if I'm not mistaken.

i also agree. sony ericsson and nokia always best in camera. i also own a streak 5. but my old nokia 6600 slide is 10times better quality photo thn streak though its only 3.2 MP.
I find the Streak's camera is perfect for quick shots, but prefer using my three-year old digital camera since its CCD sensor is larger than the one in the Streak.
With Camera360, the photos come out with a quality more pleasing to the eyes than the stock camera. It's ok to take photos if you are not picky about quality but don't expect jaw-dropping photos!
My fav camera phone goes definitely to the Nokia N8 and Sony Satio/X10 - they maybe a bit old, but when you take photos or videos, you can show them to everyone since the quality is high above than most smartphones!
I use a proper camera if I want to take proper photographs, the Streak is handy for the odd snapshot but it's a phone/tablet device, not a camera.
Yeah, my solution to poor phone cameras is to not use them. If the Streak didn't have a camera I wouldn't miss it.

How's the camera on the Galaxy Note?

I think for the most part the reviews have said the camera is pretty decent, but how does it compare to the iPhone 4S? I think the iPhone 4S may have one of the best if not the best camera on a smartphone. Does anyone here know of a detailed comparison between the two phones? Since the Galaxy Note have essentially the same camera as the Galaxy S2, a comparison like that would be fine as well.

The best camera on a smartphone is Nokia N8. Nothing can beat Finnish queen - especially in terms of sound quality in videos, and still pictures.
I have seen a lot of sample footages from Note on youtube, and I have to say - there are some issues with autofocus, and in my opinion there is something wrong with microphone (too sensitive, might be a problem when you decide to record something on windy day). LED does fair job, even in completely dark room. Shooting in poor light conditions is okay - not as good as on N8, but details can be seen. I also noticed, that camera adjust exposition little bit slower compared to SG II. I am still not sure, if both devices (SGN and SGII) are using the same camera.
For me, the biggest problem is a way to hold this device and shoot pictures. I still didn't buy my Note yet (looking for some operators to release Note on contract in Poland), but I played with it in shop. Holding is not a problem, you can even put it into pocket, but shooting a pictures or making video might be tricky. With Nokia's I was able to hold it with one hand, and for example took fancy pictures from ground level, etc.
Question to lucky Note owners - can you take nice pictures from close distance? For example - can you take a picture of a book, and read the letters easily?
With regards
TT.

Absolutely. With my Xperia X10 I had to put it into macro mode, with the Note, it just gets on with it and focuses flawlessly.
In response to the OP, I think the 4S and the Note will be pretty even in good light, but the Sony backlit sensor used in the 4S would win in poor light.
Having said that, I took some video last night by the stage at a live concert, and the Note rocks.

2 things . The BEST CAMERA ON ANDROID phone is HTC AMAZE !!
That thing takes better pictures than my wife's canon . I played with all settings and then decided to leave it on auto and I have perfect picture EVERY Time !!
Phone is peace of crap . poor battery life , it gets hot after less than 3o minutes of use . Second thing is if you want to take text photos use scan2pdf mobile app . I use it all the time . Don't have the galaxy note yet its in the mail
Note's camera is not good compared to nokia N8, yes its true.
Note's camera is better than, sensation xe, sgII, iphone, se and xl. What else you want more? Note is almost ahead of every other top selling brands. But I am not satisfied with note's camera quality, especially under dim light, but still ahead, you can compare it in gsm arena.

[Q] Camera quality - my last day to decide whether to keep Nexus or not please help!

Hi,
I really like the Nexus 4 but the camera currently is really feeling like a let down. Now having had many smartphones (even before they were really called smartphones) I've come a long way and for the last 18 months I've had an iPhone for doing FaceTime calls when away as Skype etc didn't work well in the UK.
Don't get me wrong, I am not an Apple fanboy and in fact hate the restrictiveness of it all. It sucks donkey balls, but I can take decent pictures with it of my son when he goofs around and send them to granny etc.
This is what I'm currently missing from the Nexus. The camera lag is more noticeable and when using HDR apps they just seem a bit grainy, like I'm using an old 2-3MP camera or something.
So, today is my last day within the 2 week returns period for the Nexus.
Is there an app or something to make the camera work nicely?
Thanks,
Joe, a firm android fan

I agree that the Nexus 4 camera isn't the best in the market. BUT, I also feel that, from my personal usage, it's not that bad either.
I haven't really noticed any considerable camera lag or grainy pictures, during normal usage. Of course, in low-light situations, there is def. a camera quality hit and graininess appears.
In fact, there's a thread here, with pictures taken by normal N4 users. You might wanna pop on over there and ask around - how to improve quality/speed, and stuff.
I don't really use the camera as much as you, I think. So, that thread might really help.
:good: Hope you keep your Nexus 4!
I am a new user as well, with kids and doubts about this camera indoors.
Try Camera FV-5. I've gotten better focusing with this app. And also, manually reducing ISO makes a noticeable difference in graininess. However, the app costs about $4. There is a Lite version that takes smaller sized pictures.
Yeah, the camera is pretty crappy for an 8MP, compared to an iPhone 4S or newer it's very disappointing.
Having said that, I did find that shooting at 5 or 3MP helps reduce the amount of noise in low light situations. I'm guessing the phone averages the values of neighbouring pixels, getting rid of some of the noise.
You do have to remember that this phone is about ⅓ the price of flagship phones. For example, it takes pretty crappy photos compared to my GF's Xperia Z, however she paid more than twice as much for it, so it's hard to be very disappointed. You get what you pay for I guess... It's definitely not HTC One or top end Lumia class.
But yeah, as parent of a small kid who often wants to grab that precious moment and needs the camera to focus now, not at some random point in the future, the N4 can really test your patience.
Basically, it feels like you have to roll d20 and pass a luck check every time you go to take a photo.

Thanks. Camera FV is quite good there's lots of settings to play with. I got a trial version of it and am quite impressed with it.
I've called Google and started the RMA process off which apparently gives me a few more days before they actually send the bag for me to post it off with.
This means there's a little longer for me to get the camera sorted out.
So the results so far are:
1, stock app is to slow to capture the moving toddler in full flow and I get blurry shots.
2, camera fv is great for still shots but once again the moving toddler goes blurry at the edges. Really nice app indeed.
3, HDR camera+ is a world of blur.
There must be something out there that can do it. If crapple can do it for the iPhone then surely someone's got it licked for android.
I have an iPhone 5 and am impressed with its shots of my kids. So I am in the same boat as you.. longtime android user but don't want to jump ship to iOS fulltime.
Try the Scene mode setting in the stock camera app, so that you choose Action mode. This will increase the ISO but also increase the shutter speed. I haven't tested it yet.
I know people tout iPhone camera, but there are androids phone that take better photos like the Galaxy S4 and LG G2 (hands down no discussion), you can check GSM Arena for photos comparison. And the HTC one have good low light capability and the Zoe feature.
You can return it and get the ones I recommended or the Nexus 5 when it come out. Nexus 4 camera is average, but you get what you paid for.
As for facetime isn't that only from iPhone to iPhone, I'm sure there are plenty free video calls option on android like Google Hangouts and Vonage Mobile, both are available for iOS, and works on data connection too, not just Wi-Fi.
PS. All Skype conversation is a threesome, between you, the person you're talking to, and the nsa agent.

The thing that the iPhone 5 camera excels at are poor light, quick focus shots. The kind of photos that get taken most often by people IRL. It's also much quicker to get the camera going, focus and take the shot. So, while under test conditions there are many phones with better cameras, when it comes to day to day usage, the iphone one is pretty unrivalled.

[Discussion] Camera firmware

I've came across Note2, S4, G2 and now I'm on Z1. And I've expected for camera to be top out of those, but left disappointed. I feel like hardware could do so much more, but that camera firmware is so.. so... Nah, don't even have word for it. It's like Krait 400 clocked at 0.5 GHz.
What was Sony thinking?
Colors are off, there's too much noise, no option for wide 16MP, or something like that, white balance is off... It's mess!
If Samsung had this sensor, I feel like it would rock 1020 with it's firmware.. Do you feel same?
Yes,I guess so.
Did you try the manual mode and playing with the ISO?

The Developers will improve the software soon. Anyway I still one from many disappointed. The hardware is ok, software from Sony sucks.
Eclyptos : The camera software from Sony DOESN'T SUCK! It just needs improvement. If it would suck, you wouldn't be able to take such good pictures in manual mode (check the forum in the Z1 camera tests).
But that requires some knoledge ...

Lol, go read photographing forums, same rules apply for all cameras, here is not the place to learn how to shoot.

It really.isn't.that bad. Sure, the 1020 is better but it's probably the best Android camera (Sony was with the Xperia S too).
It.does have issues.in auto mode.when.in iffy conditions but you.can get amazing results with this phone!

highly disappointed, the camera is designed by the cybershot team man, how can it be so crappy. imagine processing is one thing, the functionality is a complete joke, 20 MP only then 8MP? Not even a 16MP 16:9 or 16MP 4:3. The sensor size would probably be great for 16MP photos, but 20MP is probably a bit too much. The auto mode is complete trash too, only time I ever get good shot is only under perfect light condition. Unless they are still trying to iron out a few things, or the cybershot team lacks experience writing software for ARM processor or something. There is no excuse of it being as what it is now. And it was out for a while and we still don't see any major improvement what so ever, they should be ashame of themselves.
Looks like not everyone disagrees with me like they did on my post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2562211
Oh well, maybe the will improve it on the upcoming 14.2.A.1.114 firmware update.
Man I don't know why people complain so much about the camera! Maybe I'm just lucky but my phone takes absolutely brilliant pics! I threw a few pics onto a massive Samsung smart TV not so long ago and I was blown away by the quality! Sure it struggles a bit in low ligting conditions but honestly it's still good for a phone, I think people were expecting DSLR quality pics when they bought this phone or expecting it to be the same as a Sony Cybershot point and shoot camera? By comparison to the two cameras I mentioned, it will never be on par with those because it has a much smaller sensor. For what it is (a phone camera) it is brilliant.
I'm not denying that there is definite room for improvement on the software side but honestly currently it's still a killer camera (if you know how to use it properly)
I don't understand why people are so nit picky about this phone, people have ripped it to shreds over small details but at the end of the day it's a killer android phone worthy to be a flagship device. I know other's have had issues with displays... blah blah blah. Infact I did too, I had a tiny dead pixel on mine the first time I turned it on, sent it back and they gave me a replacement no questions asked! My point is, if you're so unhappy about the device then just sell it and buy another phone or if there's a fault with it then get it fixed or replaced under warranty instead of ripping the phone to shreds

It's not the camera that itself that people are complaining about. It's the auto mode. I think some of us know that it takes great photos with the right manual settings but what is the point of having the Auto mode if it doesn't work properly?
I really want to love this phone as it is probably the most elegant device out there, has excellent battery life, and the performance is one of the best but it's the unpredictable auto mode on the camera that bugs the crap out of me and most of the people who are not happy about the camera.

Ok yes, on that point I agree with you. Auto mode could be better. Im 100% sure that Sony keeps an eye on this forum as we are the most critical users out there, the average Joe probably doesn't care much about the camera and uses the phone for texting and calls so my point is they are aware of it and they will address it, give them time. They heard our screams with the bootloader fiasco! Btw Samsung wouldn't have even cared less about the issue but Sony does, so just wait for them to sort the software issues out.
First of all, Merry Christmas everyone
I've been shooting some photos yesterday and conclusion is this. Night or low light photos (indoors) looks awful, but daylight photos looks fantastic even on front facing camera. But, it's not proportional how awesome day photos looks like. I mean, there's so much detail, colors are good, and wb is just fine, but at night, there is so much noise, artifacts on front camera.. It's impossible that hardware is one to blame..
I sure hope Sony will fix it in new firmware update..

It's not the camera, it's the photographer.... Seriously, how do you expect us to give you the right settings we don't even know what the subject is, the lighting you have, etc... Before complaining, learn about photography and what each setting does and maybe you will take better pictures.

I agree with u all… its just the SA that needs tunning. The manual mode is great for people who knows how to treat it

Noise, noise, noise.....
My xperia T takes way far better pictures....
When they ask your money for "the best camera phone" (lol) they should give you at least something a little better than the previous flagship, not worse....
I agree that the camera takes some good pictures here and there but when you zoom in the quality goes to.....

They don't want to take the effort to get better shots. One decent shot in the photo thread is all it takes to debunk them. Hardest thing to figure out is lighting. Get that right and the shots are fantastic. Same applies to any camera.

Was looking at the cybershot line and the bulk of them come with 1/2.3" sensors only the RX100 uses a 1 inch sensor. Meaning its around 4x bigger with carl zeiss glass.
The advantage these PS have is the optical zoom. But do they work well in auto in the hands of some one that cannot take a photo. No. Was just looking at vacation pics a friend took and so many of them were out of focus. Her compact has the same sensor size but only the outdoors photos come out ok. There is quite some noise in a double tap on the tab. Again using auto, indoors it uses a lower shutter speed and i was apalled to see 5/10 shots coming out blurred. The flash blows everybody away. When it does not you get a decent shot.
Indoors in artificial lighting in sub par lighting any compact size sensor is going to struggle. The hardest are indoors subpar lighting where you're forced to use the flash to avoid blur. Have to use higher ISOs in this case, no you won't be able to avoid noise but you will get better shots ie more natural than with a flash.

yeah and then when they get the next device, they'll go spam the respective forum with more *****ing & whining. Take a look around the board and every camera gets bashed. This is normal. Expect it and ignore it.
Bandwidth bandits the lot of 'em
The reason we all expected this to be a great camera, is because Sony told us it was with all their marketing. I was so excited by the phone. But the camera was the reason I returned it. Otherwise, it is a splendid piece of kit.
