[Q] Can't Update to Android 2.2 Froyo - Bravo General

I was excited that I received a message to update my firmware to 2.2 Froyo, but when I tried doing so I kept getting errors at the installation screen. It would download then go to the installation screen and give me an error.
I'm not sure if I bricked the phone without knowing or something, but I get the following error message when trying to upgrade:
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command
I have no idea what that is/where it is. I checked my SD Card, but I didn't see anything like that there. I'm guessing I'm missing that folder/file, but I don't know where it would have went or if I can get it back.
I've tried to do the update both through my Bravo and downloading a ZIP file and trying to do it through the Recovery screen. I tried everything Motorola suggests on their website as well as searched Google a lot, but came up with nothing.
I should add that even when I click "applysdcard:update.zip" it gives me a few errors and aborts the installation.
I'm just wondering if there's any way to fix this so I can upgrade my firmware?
Thanks to anyone that can help.

Just emailed you the original build.prop you need in order to get the update to work. Let me know how it goes.

Finally working , i replace the file and i did upgrade my phone. Thanks a lot for all the info

I get a the update downloaded but when it restarts I am getting a white triangle with a yellow explination point.
If I pop the battery I can get past the error and back to the phone
I have it rooted with one click
Any info?

I'm sure there is a solution, but just forget it and install 2.2 SBF.

Yes, I used Root Explorer. I'm guessing by MCFarmfresh's post that there issome sort of original build for the phone? I've looked everywhere for hours all night last night before resorting to asking somewhere, but I couldn't find anything and the "solutions" I've seen all did not work. I kept getting the same errors.
Thank you for replying. If you can help, it'll be very much appreciated.

I have a rooted Bravo and I deleted some of the bloatware, and I received the Froyo update and everytime I download and the system resets I get an error and the update stops. Selecting from memory card doesnt work for me, and I dont have a backup of the original settings to re-install (which I'm not sure how to do that either). If anyone has any suggestions I'm open.

its checking for att apps
if you renamed them name them back to apk

I didn't rename them, I deleted them off my phone.

I don't know much about these things but I would think that would be a bad thing to do...
I was able to get the update to install to my phone but now it is running slow
Any more info on how to fix this issue?

OK, so I tried everything that's suggested pretty much everywhere and I'm still unable to update. I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong or what, but I've tried resetting the phone via the phone/recovery screen, tried updating via the phone, and I also tried replacing the original build, but nothing worked so far.
I have no idea what else I can do, but any help would be appreciated.

If nothing else works, you can always sbf. It sounds scarier than it really is, actually it is pretty easy. Just make sure you follow the directions. I've done several sbf's and they have all turned out perfectly.

Thanks. I'm not sure what it was, but I switched to my Windows XP desktop (from my Windows 7 Home 64-bit laptop) and the SBF Flash worked perfectly, thanks bandroid, yourself, and others. I really appreciate all of the help given. 2.2 looks and feels a lot better than 2.1 so I'm really happy about that.

If you will give me your email I can get it to you. For the life of me I cannot figure out hhow to attach files through pm using my phone lol. You can also use the .sbf method to upgrade but I'll definitely get the files to you if you send me your email.

SBF'in it...
Okay....so one of your gentleman above (I'm new to the forum ish) stated that he had deleted some apps off of his OS. I did the same thing with AT&T Hotspot Locator (unfortunately, AT&T was quick on merging this standalone app into MyAT&T so I couldn't get the atthotspotlocator.apk back). I fixed this using the SBF file.
I won't give you the step by step but I can tell you RSD Lite is a free program from Motorola. It's basically the program they use to flash boot SW onto an otherwise dead device.
Don't be intimidated by it because it really is rather easy to facilitate. Just do like I did and YouTube how to load an SBF into a motorola device. You can pause and replay as you go along to assure no errors. Takes like 15 minutes once you've got all the necessary files downloaded.

Well, that lasted long...
Everything was going fairly well until this morning when I clicked on the phone button (default launcher) and tried to go into the dialer, then it just closed every time I tried doing so.
To try to fix this I rebooted my phone, nothing; restored, nothing; factory reset, nothing; re-installed 2.2.1 FroYo via flashing the SBF with RSD Lite and 'apply:sdcard:update.zip' through Android's Recovery Screen, nothing.
When I tried doing the last 2, however, I received these errors (the first one I had with the first problem and the other 2 are new):
E:Can't mount CACHE: recovery/command
E:Can't mount CACHE: recovery/caller
E:Can't mount CACHE: recovery/log
Now, with the "caller" error, I did NOT touch anything having to do with the dialer and whatnot. That I know.
The last time I had problems with my laptop so I tried it on my desktop and it worked, but now I tried the desktop and it still isn't working properly. Some of the features that I had with the update are now gone such as the "third party apps" option and the sliding "lock screen" is now permanently present.
Any help with this is appreciated.

rooting after receiving 2.1 ota frusturations

First off, ive been searching and trying different roms for hours to no prevail. I will begin with what ive accomplished and attempted. BTW, im a complete noob to rooting.
I followed the 1.5 to 2.1 sticky "[Walkthrough] From stock (1.5) to rooted 2.1 (update - new link)". I successfully completed part 1 and part 2 but fail on part 4. I did not attempt the recovery install and regret it now.
So I was able to get the full install of PB00IMG.zip to work flawlessly. I don't believe it was actually necessary to install a special rom at this point but when i started i figured they were step by step instructions. Then i got the usb driver installed and my pc recognized my phone as the htc dream which i figure is normal. After that I attempted to install the ivan 1.0 rom and got exactly this:
E: Can't open /cache/recovery/command
--Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted
I figure the only relevant part is the signature failure. I realize that all the zips are signed and therefore cannot be opened. I understand that they have to be renamed to "update.zip". No im not naming it "update.zip.zip". I am renaming it with windows xp. I saw somewhere that a guy had the same issue and renamed it with astro and it worked out fine so Im hoping this is the issue but that seem silly. Ive verified the md5 sums of the rom images as well.
Ive also tried the Eris_Official that is on the sticky and plane jane 1.0.
Ive seen some debate on whether or not the 2.1 ota eris's can be rooted but it seems quite apparent its the same as any other eris. my hboot is 1.46 and not 1.49 so all is well there.
I also applied wipe data/factory reset
At this point i am at a loss as to what to do because it seems as though ive tried everything. I will reinstall PB00IMG.zip (hopefully) but im not sure what that rom actually does, i have no idea at all. From what i saw upon booting it seems like a simple stock 2.1 rom that is rooted. I'd prefer not to use that but as long as i can install the overclock kernel then i dont mind too much. I prefer the ivan rom. I prefer to switch between roms at will like the experienced rooters on here.
i did not wipe cache partition because im not sure what that does and it was never mentioned.
From deductive reasoning, it HAS to be an issue with the signature verification and is probably a simple fix.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Hopefully i have mentioned everything that has transpired.
You can't flash a rom without first flashing the recovery img, go back to step 4 and flash amon ra's recovery image.
i realized that and was in the process when you posted. thanks tho. I guess i got impatient and figured recovery meant like a back up if i screwed up. thats what happens when ya dont follow directions! i have like 3 roms saved and im dl'ing the ivan and will give it a shot. everything else is completed tho. just waiting on teh download. i think i lost a good amount of contacts tho because i didnt back them up. i have no clue how to get them back beyond trying to sync with google. does our google account save all contacts automatically?

it does if you have syncing enabled, when you log in with your email on the new rom, it will restore your contacts back from google. also the first time you open your market, if you hit menu and go to downloads, it remembers what you had previously downloaded.
ivans is nice as an like stock rom, but i think it is out dated, there was a newer one jcase's plain jane rom, or basically anything on the front page. tho i perfer cyanogen elb, or zenexp. eh try a few different ones
its weird because i never turned off sync my google email. the only sync options i had were google, facebook, and flickr (that applied to me). Most of my contacts are saved but not all.
I also did the market thing immediately but apps like handscent weren't in there which is odd to me.
My big thing about switching between roms is saving all the settings from the previous one. I presume there is a root app for that but i havent even begun to dive into it. I just wanted to overclock this thing because its pissing me off with how slow it is. Also, it being more slim as far as cluttered bs apps helps too.
btw, i got it fully up and running, just installing apps and adding contacts. I would say that contacts over a few months old or less are the only ones missing.

so why would you leave that to chance. . . im sure you noticed all the disclaimers, i understand its at your own risk but still. The recovery has saved my 4$$ several times now. . . trust me especially if your a new it isn't worth the risk. (unless your ballin but no offense to anyone if we were we'd all have incredibles or at least moto droids by now). . and don't use rom manager until its been tested on our device thoroughly . . . which means never use rom manager on an HTC Eris. lolz
You can use something like titanium to backup your apps and settings
Sent from my Eris using Tapatalk
Illogical when did you get your Eris? I ask this because I'm getting a replacement Eris next week an I'm just wondering if I have to prepare my self for the new 2.1 with the 1.49 h boot or if there a possibility that I would get something easier to root.

[Q] 2.2 Froyo won't load - Incredible

Hey,
I'm a "noob" and not SUPER technically advanced when it comes to phones, but I have a decent idea how to do things with it.
I got an Incredible used from someone and it was already rooted by him. I was told the other night that you need to have the phone unrooted in order to get the official OTA 2.2 update. That night I attempted to unroot it, but turns out I was doing it wrong. I went to bed, and woke up with the OTA update on my phone asking if I wanted to install it, so I said Install Now, and it went to the Boot screen and I dont know if I did something wrong, or it just wouldnt work because my phone was rooted.
So now, 3 days later I've got it Unrooted finally, and I've tried several different update.zip files that I've downloaded from different forums, etc. None of them will work, and they all say Installation Aborted.
Also, when I am in the recovery screen, it says E: Can't open /cache/recovery/command
I've tried several different sd cards thinking that was the problem, and same failure everytime. I have a feeling it is my phone itself..
Any ideas, help, advice??
Greatly appreciated..

Just download the Verizon 2.2 Froyo update RUU. Run it on your computer with your phone connected and you'll get it. You didn't need to unroot either cause it will automatically zap that.

Update Failed

So I used Oneclickroot 2.3.0 a while back, which did NOT remove asphalt or nascar or anything else that I know of and i did check the run.bat file...saw nothing regarding any removal of files.
I undid the root in order to apply the update and I still get an error...does anyone know what can be wrong? Here is the error:

Ideas, anyone?
Thanks
Try renaming the file to just "update" and not update.zip
Please update us about whether this solution works and good luck. Pretty sure I'm going to be in the same situation.
Unfortunately this did not work. It is looking for update.zip. not update.
Anyone else? Please throw some ideas!

You may be on to something. I once DID modify
windowsmgr.support_rotation_270=false

Can someone please copy/paste the contents of this file to me?
Also, if there's a build.prop.bak file in the /system directory, would that make a difference?

The plot thickens! Even though I've never made such a change, I'm still interested to see how you do so I'm going to try and help you out when I get to a real computer shortly. EDIT: here it is, stock dated 9/18/10 attached.
Were you at least able to use your phone even after these failed upgrades? It'd help settle things in my mind if the answer's yes.
I did the same thing and the DI18 -> EB13 update failed on my phone 'til I reverted the build.prop file back to original ( you did save build.prop.orig didn't you )
After I restored the file ot original the update completed and now I'm on EB13 waiting for EC05.

Thanks! How exactly do I apply this file and get rid of the old one? Do I need to root again?

I'm far from the biggest expert here but I think you probably would, yes, then do a copy/paste with the right file explorer. I use AndExplorer and it can see the root of the phone FS (that's how I got the file actually).
My questions to you and others are:
1) is the phone still OK after a failed update.zip process
and
2) is it really necessary to UN-root in order to make the update work? (whether or not you have to root again after it's done)
Yes, the phone DOES still work after a failed update process. It never started to fully undo the file....the verifications failed.
DroidApprentice, thanks so much for the build.props file...that definately helped something =]
however, I now face a NEW error when trying to install the update:
"BML:Boot: (then a bunch of random numbers and letters)
Status 7.
Any ideas on what this is?
Phone still works after this error.
I tried this both while rooted and unrooted.
Edit: I found a thread on sdx, where Firon says that you need a stock kernel to flash a stock update. The oneclickroot said something about the kernel when it installed, but doesnt it put everything back to normal when you undo it? Is there an easy fix for this, if this is the cause?
Whew, this just gets more interesting if not frustrating, but at least you're not "soft bricking" your phone.
It's funny but I never thought One Click Root did ANYTHING to the kernel. I guess my reading about it or knowledge of it isn't as comprehensive as I thought.
I'd like to continue helping you research this issue because, like you, I would prefer not to use Odin unless I have no other choice.
Elixis, I just realized! You may have been on EB13, the first "official" Froyo update, or another ROM entirely.
I am on DI18 and that's where my build.prop file came from, a rooted with OCR DI18/Eclair phone. That may matter and just wanted to make sure you were clear on that since I'm guessing other versions may have different build.prop files which could affect the update process.
I'm a noob but not that much of a noob....lol. I'm on DI18, not EB13..

Lost 1.141 Update

Hey folks,
maybe someone can help me.
In the morning on my A500 appeared an update available message. I tried to install it, but it failed in the middle. So I got a brick, which I solved with the chinese update. Afterwards I pushed my saved system.img.
BUT: Now the Build Number says Acer_A500_1.112. instead of Acer_A500_1.112.01_EMEA_CUS7
I checked the build.prop but there the correct build number is written.
Also another check of update gimme the message, that my system is up-to-date.
Is anyone able to provide help, like EMEA flexrom.img, boot.img, or some useful advises?
There is a EMEA signed update.zip floating around. Try to restore with that one and see what happens.
I got the same "Update" message (34MB?). I don't know if it was because mine was already rooted. D/L and updated, in the middle the dreadful Triangle with the exclamation mark pops up. Bricked! Did a reboot and try to reapply the update again..Bricked again.
Is this because I'd rooted the tablet?
gotta push flexrom
You gotta push your flexrom image onto the tablet too then "FACTORY RESET". The flexrom (mmcblk0p6) has the information of the update... that is where you are getting the difference from (if i am not mistaken)...
Try that and see if it helps ... I believe it should... jejeje

Nope, mine was rooted with gingerbreak 1.20 and worked fine.
did you delete/rename any phone apks???

I have not messed or removed anything, was rooted, root-explorer/titanium loaded and updated without issue.
reran gingerbreak afterwords and all is well....

Typically I ignore posts that seem to just be complaining, but you seem real torn up about this so... go to settings, accounts, add your exchange account and be happy.
Another thing that can cause the update to hang would be any edits to your build.prop (ie. Netflix early fixes, etc). Changing back to the original resolved the triangular fail icon for me and completed the update with root still installed, gingerbreak did have to be I installed again but root is still attainable.

I was having all kinds of problems not getting the update to run and kept Triangle halt..
I resolved it by the following:
you dont need to do anything with Gingerbreak, its ok. The problem is for those that changed any system files. In my case, i wanted exchange, so i was using a different email.apk, well as learned from another thread here, if you look in Cache/recovery/logs, you will see a file where you can see where the update went wrong. Like i said, in my case, i saw the file size was not what was expected for email.apk. I removed the exchange account, used rootexp and renamed email.apk.old (the original) to email.apk and the obex file then the update worked correctly.
I was going crazy as i was messing with this instead of watching my heat vs the bulls 1st half.

look at your /Cache/recovery/logs for an error and post results
I had to try about 7-8 times looking in the recovery log after each time to see what .apk that i forgot that I had deleted, then put it back and try again. I finally was successful and haven't seen much difference other than no random wake ups. Maybe a little snappier.
I had mine hang in recovery every unsuccessful update which is NOT THE SAME AS BRICKING.

[Q]There is no update available

Hey guys, I really need some help here.
This morning there was a notification about system update, I bet it was the honeycomb 3.1 so I just let it run. However, it turned out that the update failed at last. Since then I can't get the system update notification anymore. I manually checked the update in settings and it showed that "There is no update available for your device currently." I have rebooted the unit several times and tried "Factory data reset" and got no change. I searched around the forum and found this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14345169
and tried the approach mentioned in it and it's still the same.
I even tried using the leaked update file to update the device and it still won't get updated.
Would you please help me look into this issue? Thanks a lot.
are you still on .9?
if so, just root the device, and install a 3.1 rom via clockwork.

Yes, I have downgraded the firmware to .9. But the thing is, I have a mac and the root guide I found here seems require a windows system. And it really bothers me that something isn't working out of blue. So I'd really like to understand why this is happening. Thanks anyway, I will try to root it if I can't figure this out.

I dug into the forum and found out a very helpful post about how to set adb work on your non-windows system. If somebody has the same problem, you maybe need to refer to this one.
