I went into Telecom today to get a SIM card, and the rep said that my phone (After putting the IMEI into her computer) won't work outside major service areas (Cities; I live in a rural area.) because it has some chip inside it to make it not work properly. Does anyone know anything about this? Also, I was convinced that the radio was incapable of Vodafone 3g. But guess what? it miraculously started working on VF HSPA and 3G. But soon after leaving town it dropped to GSM, as usual. Knowing that it is capable of Vodafone 3g, it should be able to get as good service as my GT540 did, right? Well it soon dropped on the way home. I scanned for networks and at one point it connected with full bars, but only for a second. It dropped before connecting data, and I went back into the parent menu. The 'Use only 2g networks' box was checked, which I had unchecked earlier. So I unchecked it and tried again. The box checked itself yet again. Everytime I'm in signal, use only 2g networks checks itself, reducing me to poor, constantly dropping GSM. I seriously need help with this one, guys. How can I disable this goddamned demon chip, and why is it in there? What is it and what does it do? All info appreciated. Thanks.
Bump. Anyone know anything at all?

EU or TMUS?
EU does not have any such restriction.
However for a 3G or better service, it needs the reception - so if your service provider has a mainly built up area hspda/3G service and a mainly 2G rural service it not hard to figure it out.
google the coverage by post code/Zip for you provider and see
T9193 is the Telstra hd2, for Australia. I live in New Zealand, and I already know vodafone has no coverage whatsoever over my.house.

It is like this, the T-Mobile HD2 can only get 3G with the T-Mobile network because of the internal hardware can only use the bands/frequencies that the T-Mobile network or a network that uses the same bands/frequencies T-Mobile uses for 3G. The same is true for your TelstraT9193 HD2 it can only use the 3G from Telstra's network or a network that uses the same bands/frequencies that Telstra uses. You can get Edge/GSM bit no 3G with other carriers. If you lived in the US you could use AT&T to get 3G using your Telstra T9193 HD2 as they use the same bands/frequencies as the Telstra network, but I know of no other major carrier that uses the same as Telstra. Sorry man but it is a hardware thing.
It's been working on 3g multiple times. And it is a hardware issue; it has the right bands, so the only explaination could be this '2g service chip' that the clerk mentioned.

There's no miracle chip, or pixie dust inside. It's simple. Voda NZ uses 3g 2100 in urban 900 elsewhere BUT, their rural (900) coverage is poor and it falls back to voda's old GSM 2G constantly. Telecom XT uses an all 3G wcdma (2100) urban (850) rural network, with excellent rural 850 coverage.
If you use a telstra hd2 you will only get vodafone 3g in urban areas and 2G GSM elsewhere, however; with Telecom xt you have good 3g coverage everywhere. With tmous (2100/1700), your choice is 2degrees or voda for 3g urban 2100 and 2g GSM rural. Xt will give you 3g coverage in urban areas but no coverage at all out of town as the 1700 band is not used in new Zealand. International hd2 is in the same boat with xt. But, it can use 900 vodafone band so you can get extended 3g infill coverage with vodafone, with fall back to legacy 2g voda network.

It's quite simple, your telecom only offers 900/2100mhz 3G while the T9193 supports 850/2100mhz 3G. So guess what happen when you're in a 900mhz area? DING DING!! No 3G service for you because your T9193 doesn't support that band.
Oh, they use didderet bands for rural and urban coverage? That explains it lol. Thanks for the help, I was kinda confused.

I have a GSM Touch Diamond and there's no way to use the US 3G even if you have a 3G sim, we discussed it in the Diamond forum and people said it's just not possible. Is this the case with the Blackstone or are you able to use 3G in the US?
if you use a 3 sim you can get service if 3 got a roaming agreement with an usa isp
if the usa isp don't use 3g services on the hz's the rest of the world use you can only get
2g or 2.5g (edge) service
the Telstra Touch HD version (Blackstone - T8285) uses at&t's 850 3G band. it works quite well in the US as long as one is in an area that uses more 850 3G towers vs. 1900 3G towers.

it's 3G from at&t, period. as i mentioned in my post, the Telstra HD is limited to using at&t's 850 3G band. at&t uses both 850/1900 to deliver 3G. if you're in an area that uses only/more 1900 3G towers then you may not have 3G access. i believe Phoenix, AZ is an example. can't comment on the speed with an at&t phone because i don't own one. the pic below is an example of the speed i get with my Telstra HD on at&t.

If there's 850 towers but more 1900 towers then the 3G just won't work at all? It won't just connect to the 850 ones?

i can't say if it won't work at all. for example, if there are 100 towers and 95 are 1900 and 5 are 850 and, you live near an 850 tower, (theoretically) you should get 3G access. using your example, i would say you'd be connected to Edge more often than 3G.

if i remember correctly, there's a user here named tucomora who lives in Houston and has a Telstra HD. i believe he indicated that Houston may have more 1900 towers than 850s. but, as you may know, at&t is adding more 850 towers nation wide. i suggest you send tucomora a PM to get his perspective on using the HD in south texas.

Would you not be able to go into the phone's settings and disable the 1900 band or something? why would you want to disable the UMTS 1900 3G band? if there are no 850 3G towers, you won't get 3G service you'll get EDGE instead. my phone options are set to Auto for GSM and UMTS and if there are no 850 3G towers it switches to EDGE. simple as that, not a big deal for me (and not implying that it is to you). you can change the GSM/UMTS settings to seek/use only 850/1900 3G towers, but in my experience, if the HD doesn't find an 850 3G tower, i won't have a phone signal, period. if you're in the US and want a HD with 3G capabilities, you get the Telstra Touch HD and accept the fact that having only one US 3G band (e.g., 850 3G) will limit 3G access in some areas.

If there are 850 towers but just not as many as 1900 towers, you could disable 1900 so it only connects to the 850 towers and then you'd have 3G, right? That's what I was saying. I have EDGE on the Diamond but it's so slow it makes me not want to use it most of the time.

uh, no it doesn't work like that. the phone is going to lock onto the strongest signal possible. if it sees a stronger 1900 signal, that's what the phone will use. if you (could) disable the 1900 band and you're in an area with 1900 towers, you would not have ANY signal at all, no phone, no data. based on your level of concern, wait for the at&t TP2 (or whatever it's called); then you'll have no worries about 3G access.

chargers yes, batteries no. The Telstra ROM that comes with your device will have its internet connection settings locked to Telstra (which we can't obviously use in the US). this means you won't be able to access the internet from your phone until you add at&t's connection settings. i never researched methods to add at&t's connection settings so i don't know if they exist. i flashed HardSPL to my device so i could install a custom ROM. i suggest you click the link in my signature and learn about flashing new ROMS. hope you enjoy your device!

I have just taken a job in the states and brought my phone with me. I was expecting to be able to get 3g when I insert an AT&T or T-Mobile sim card. Unfortauntely the best that the phone seems to be able to get is Edge.
After doing a bit of research it seems that in the US they are using differnt frequencies.
Does anyone know of a fix which would allow my phone to get 3g in the states?

T-Mobile are, I think, UMTS 900 / 2100 (perhaps like Vodafone in the UK and elsewhere, which is why we can all use T-Mobile-based rooted HTC ROMs in our phones).
AT&T is UMTS 850 and 1900.
At the moment no phone on earth can do both UMTS 850 *and* UMTS 900. These frequencies are used to provide longer range coverage in low-density service areas - in other words, most city-edge and countryside places.
UMTS 1900, 2100 and other higher numbered frequencies are used in higher-density areas to provide more calling / data capacity, but with the downside of more limited range.
It seems (googling) that AT&T do 850/1900 and T-Mobile do 1700 (as of May '08 sez Wikipedia), though the T-Mobile MyTouch3G does 1700 and 2100....so maybe T-Mobile now do 2100 as well (at least in some places). There doesn't appear to be much, if any overlap on 3G frequencies between carriers and users must be EDGE only on the telco that doesn't match their phone. Everyone does EDGE.
In New Zealand, where I am, one carrier does 850 and the other 900...but they both support 2100....and a 3rd carrier will soon be offering 2100 later this year.....so you do get *some* 3G on just one phone in built up areas where telcos need more capacity and use 2100....but you get nothing in the countryside and have to used EDGE/GPRS.
There are about 7 UMTS frequency bands all up (Wikipedia).....so any single device is going to be seriously challenged to support all those well.....and what telco would want their phones to do that anyway? Frequency incompatibilities prevent their customers from leaving.......which explains why there aren't any phones that do all 7.

Have you checked your settings?
Settings -> Wireless controls -> Mobile networks -> Make sure 2G only is "Un-ticked"
If it doesn't work, maybe you would like to consider selling your one on ebay and buying a Magic {or other handset} from the US
Hi guys,
I just arrive US and got an AT&T sim, I use the same HTC Magic (32A) I used to use in Taiwan but I got no 3G reception
I'm quite sure the 32A magic can operate on AT&T's 3G Mobile Network since it has:
HSDPA/WCDMA: 900/2100MHz
Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE: 850/900/1800/1900MHz
Anyone know why?
I got no Data Plane with my SIM, I'm using a "Nation 1440" family plan.
I got the correct APN set on my phone (though it has no relation with 3G reception)
I'm now using New Radio (6.35.10.18), 1.76.2007 SPL, ROM is Smoki 0.7.6.
The RF Signal Tracker said my Network Type is "EDGE"
I also checked with ATT and they said I got excellent 3G reception in my neighborhood.
And I'm sure I didn't set the phone to work in 2G network only.
This set up works perfectly in Taiwan, so I got no idea what's happening?

I'm no rocket scientist but I reckon that you got no 3G because you don't have the Data Plan... I would recommend adding the Data Plan, then testing out the reception, and seeing if you get 3G coverage. I don't think there is a fee for canceling Data if it turns out that you still get no 3G, at-least not with T-Mobile and AT&T that I know of. I've added and removed Data Plans a few times without many consequences.

That's what I thought in the first place, so I called the customer service and they told me that reception has nothing to do with Data Plane.
Which still make sense to me because from my knowledge, the registration of 3G/2G network is not that essentially related to Data Plane since UMTS / GSM is just a RF technology, normal voice service can also operate on a 3G (to be more precise, the UMTS) network.
But I'm not that familiar the US carrier's policy, so there's still the possibility that a SIM with no data plan is prohibit from registering to a 3G network.
I'll try to find a SIM with Data Plane and put it in my Magic, see how it works...
(My relative happened to be using iPhone 3GS with data plane)

That would be the best bet. Experiment with different sim cards to rule out a problem with the device itself. My opinion would be to take it to an AT&T dealer to quickly cycle through sim cards, if they have any with Data on hand.

AT&T uses HSDPA/WCDMA 850/1900MHz for 3G, so you won't be able to get it on that phone. T-Mobile uses 1700/2100 so you might be able to get it with them. Call and see what frequencies the towers in your area use.
Good luck.

Yeah, I google for a while this afternoon and found that too...
The problem is I do have 850MHz & 1900MHz but thay ONLY operate on GSM, not WCDMA.
T-Mobile uses 1700MHz for down-stream (or up-stream? I forgot). I only have 2100MHz so I suppose I'll have no luck with T-Mo as well.
I guess I'll do without 3G for a while, until I have more budget to get a new Android phone that do operate on ATT's 3G network
Ps. I cross tested my SIM using my relative's iPhone 3G, sure enough, my SIM has 3G reception without question.

Hello everybody...
I'm out side U.S now I unlocked my Vibrant to use it abroad.
2G work but 3G network doesn't work any solution ?
I'm waiting you guys.
My understanding is that the Vibrant needs to support the 3G frequency bands in your new country, and you might also have to change some network settings.
Can you tell us what country you are in and which service provider you are using?
Also, this should really go in General.
Yes,
You need to match freqs the vibrant is not a world phone.
You will only get 2G Service.
If anyone needs unlock service and cant get from TMO. Hit me up. I can do a good deal
If you're in Europe or Asia, the 2100 band on the phone should suffice in most places. If you're in most of the Americas, the 1900 band should suffice. But if you're in a country that uses 450, 800, 850, 900, 1800 or Band IX 1700, you're SOL.
What country are you in right now and what is the carrier? The phone might not support the 3G band used by that carrier or you might need to set up the APN information
You probably don't have the proper APNs.

What it comes down to is that your Vibrant might work with 3G on some networks and not on others. If it's not working where you are there isn't really anything you can do to make it work at this time. The network you're using probably isn't compatible with the frequencies the Vibrant can use.
Lot of misinformation in this thread.
The Vibrant supports quad-band GSM, so in terms of 2G you are fine. However, for 3G it only supports 1700/2100MHz.
It will not work on AT&T's 3G anywhere in the US.
It _will_ work on some Canadian carriers like Wind Mobile.
It _will_ work on most European/Asian carriers.

To which you seem to be contributing. No offense, but make sure what you're saying is correct before making statements like this. The FCC approval for Vibrant lists 1900 MHz UMTS as a usable frequency, and several users have shown pictures of their Vibrants getting 3G connections on AT&T's network (AT&T using 1900 MHz in some areas and 850 MHz in others for 3G).
Supposedly STC uses the 2100 band for 3g so you should be able to get 3g on your phone, you might just need to change the apn settings or get it registered/authorized on your carrier.
Here are the APN settings (search here on how to change them)

Edit: Did a bit more research and it turns out that it does *not* support 1900 MHz UTMS for 3G, so basically, this phone + ATT network = no 3G service, as the hardware is incompatible.

Check which UMTS (3G) bands your phone supports - I suspect yours does not support T-Mobile's 3G band (IV). The information is usually available on wikipedia or gsmarena.
You do not "enable" 3G through software changes. Your phone supports it or it doesn't.

It does support band IV, 1700Mhz, but it doesn't do HSPA+ so it can't get 3G. That screen still doesn't tell me anything though.
GSMArena says it has 3G Networking on HSDPA 850 / 1700 / 2100 / 1900 but that's not true. There is no 2100Mhz band, not on mine anyway. Actually GSMArena isn't very complete or very accurate, it don't even list the model T959V!

That's not how HSPA+ works - it's essentially just faster 3G. Also, I found your phone on GSMArena, not sure how you searched but the information is all there and it supports band IV (1700/2100) and I (2100).
Are you sure you've enabled 3G (or deselected "Use only 2G networks")?
What is the history of the phone (bought new, used, etc.)? It should "just work" on T-Mobile as it's T-Mobile branded but, no offense, your details are a little vague.

Sorry if I was vague but it doesn't "just work" on T-Mobile! At first I though all Exhibit II models would be the same however they could have different versions like the Galaxy 2 that has an older version for 3G and a newer version that also now gets 4G, who knows.
The phone was purchased new a few months ago and is still stock. I know HSPA+ is faster 3G since I can get it on 1700Mhz on another device using the T-Mobile SIM from the Exhibit 2. Can't get HSPA+ or 3G on the Exhibit 2 though.
Yes the phone is on GSMArena but the info is not accurate, it claims the phone gets 3G and has a 2100Mhz band but that's not true. It only supports band IV on 1700.
There is no option to enable 3G or "Use only 2G networks". It has options for WCDMA (for 4G on 1700) or GSM (for Edge on 1900) but there is no setting in between for 3G or HSPA+. I tried setting it to WCDMA only but it defaults back to Auto using Edge unless I go to a T-Mobile store where they have a strong 4G signal that gives 5 bars. If I leave the store and go down the street there's no signal though.
I have verified that WCDMA for 4G is on 1700 and GSM for Edge is on 1900 using a spectrum analyzer but it never uses 2100 and has never used 3G anywhere in the Phoenix, Mesa or Scottsdale area, just Edge. There may be other modes and frequencies but I haven't been able to verify them.
If there is a way to turn on 3G I'd like to know what it is? Someone suggested dialing *#32489# clicking #3 then UTMS but that didn't do anything.

I don't know where to begin but let me get this straight...
-You bought a new Exhibit II from T-Mobile.
-It doesn't get 3G outside of the store.
-Your other T-Mobile compatible device gets 3G outside of the store.
-You've owned this same Exhibit II which hasn't been connecting to 3G for months.
On these points alone, am I understanding you correctly?

Close but not quite correct, it doesn't get 4G outside of the store.
It can't get 3G at all anywhere!
Since there is no 4G network is there a way to turn on or enable 3G or is it hopeless?

In a previous post you said that you "know" what I'm talking about but clearly that is not the case.
What T-Mobile calls 4G is actually 3G with improvements to the backhaul as well as the radios on the phones - where T-Mobile has 4G, it also has 3G.
The point of my last post was to make it obvious that you have a defective phone. I shouldn't have assumed you would figure it as you haven't figured it out in the months you've owned a phone that obviously has reception issues.

Again not true! What they call 4G is using WCDMA but 3G is using HSPA+. 3G using HSPA+ has improvements that will allow it to go up to 20Mb but my Android phone doesn't have an option for 3G, just 4G using WCDMA. The people at the T-Mobile stores would beg to differ with you about the phone being bad since I've been to 5 T-Mobile stores and they say the phone works OK since it can get 4G on 1700Mhz in the store.

Your posts are too long to be trolling, but it still feels like you are because everything you post is wrong.
In case you're not trolling:
-Your phone has hardware defects that are affecting how well it connects to 3G.
-The fact that you get reception in stores is likely because stores have signal boosters.
-Retail employees are idiots. They are trained to use the products just enough to sell them (read: not much) and aren't paid enough to attract anyone with half a brain to the position. Walk a block away from the store and show them that your phone doesn't connect to 3G (or "4G" if you still want to call it that).

Both of you are feeling like you're trolling.
It may be a tower issue or your phone. The only way to check is to use another phone.
