I am just curious, what is the baddest phone on the mkt now? I love my Nexus, haven't kept up with a lot of the newest releases. Wondering everyone's opinions.

Hardware-wise? Probably the Atrix from Motorola, if you can handle a locked bootloader (so no fully custom roms).
The upcoming HTC Sensation looks promising too, though they still seem to be stuck in the ways of low internal memory and using SD cards for expansion...
So is it an HTC thing making us partition our SD cards to get enough memory to run all the rom's etc we like? Does AT&T have anything cool, or able to be run on their system like my Nexus does? I know most hate them, but in my area it is my best option and I have no problems with them.
Only thing missing on the Samsung Galaxy S2 is HDMI out. It has DLNA (wifi streaming)

TV will have to support DLNA, For the PC you will need to use the USB cable. I'd skip the S2 if you really want hdmi.
Take a look at the Optimus G2X it has HDMI.

That optimus sounds pretty cool. Since it is a Tmobile device and say I bought an open one, or one without a carrier. Swapping out the card from my nexus would work right?

You can drop an AT&T sim right in, has the right freqs for 3g. Cons I see are small battery and my experience with LG build quality is not comforting. I would add memory to that but I'm expecting proper a2sd from the smart people soon enough.

I plan on moving to the G2X from an Optimus T (my Nexus One kicked the bucket awhile back), and I gotta say that despite the T not being made of any super high quality materials, I really like the feel of it. The G2X seems to employ some of the same ideas so it might be a pleasant surprise build-wise.
Batteries seem to have been forgotten by a LOT of manufacturers. If I remember correctly the GS2's is 1650mAh and the HTC Sensation's is something like 1530mAh, and the G2X's is 1500mAh. None of those seem stellar, but I'm a bit more forgiving of the G2X's because I have a hard time believing that the larger 4.3" screens on the other two aren't going to suck a fair bit more battery than the G2X's smaller 4" display.
Baddest depends on your needs. I personally think the HTC sensation is the 'baddest' out there at the moment. Its specs are top notch and looks like the newer, bigger brother of the N1 (Albeit minus the trackball). However, the G2X looks nice as well....again it all depends on your needs.
My meaning of the "baddest" was basically the nicest phone with the best features. Which I know can be taken differently by different people.

Looks like a nice phone but looks like a summer release, which means Sept or Oct if I actually were to wait on it. It does look like the big brother of the N1. It has lots of nice specs too aside from Sense.
The Tmobile G2X is available online in a few days, dual core, 4" screen, HDMI out and it has stock Android. I believe the phone is unlocked and easily rooted. Looking over at the LG thread they already have custom firmwares and kernels etc. CM7 is already in the works and should be here shortly.

I'm sooo glad you posted this. I currently have a Nexus One w/ ATT 3G bands and was gonna pick up a G2X off contract when it comes out. Wasn't sure about that yesterday when I found out about the Sensation but your reasoning is 100% agreeable.
Yea I can't see Qualcomm or Samsung pushing game developers like NVidia.
The 4.0" screen is the same IPS screen found on the iPhone 4. While I was a little iffy about a non-Amoled screen after the Nexus, comparisons show that it is brighter and cleaner then the existing Amoled screens, excluding the Super Duper Amoled Plus Plus screen coming on with the SGS2 in the coming months because it isn't out yet.
The only negative I can find is that it is limited to 14.4 mpbs, which so is the HTC Sensation.

That video makes the SGS2 screen look so much better, hope its just a youtube thing... the ONLY thing keeping me from jumping on G2X instead of waiting for the sensation is the screen...
GS2 does support HDMI out, over its new MHL port (USB and HDMI in one).
I don't really like Samsung for dicking about their customers on their first android phones but they seem to be rolling out updates for the GalaxyS in good time. I think the S2 is my new phone.
The hummingbird processor stomped all over everything when it came out, Exynos will do the same, i mean has anyone see its most recent quadrant score? Over 3000.
Also, no pentile AMOLED screen, WOOT!
I just hope the dev community gets behind it, they don't seem to give the GalaxyS much love...

Dude I'm in the same boat as you I just got it and I heard about the galaxy s but after doing more research it seems like my evo is already outdated in some aspects by the galaxy s. I heard rumors its gonna be on t-mobile too and I canceled my contract with them to get the evo. But as I said its better only in a few ways. I wanna see reviews for it but by the time the galaxy s is out I won't be able to return the evo. im returning my evo for the samsung galaxy s pro (with qwerty keyboard) for sprint.
I'm also very interested in the Galaxy. I love the Evo but the screen problem has got me thinking twice and I'm not too happy with how thick the Evo feels to me compared to my HD2. I understand that the Galaxy has a CPU with the same clock speed but tests have shown it to perform better along with the GPU as mentioned. The much slimmer profile sounds very good to me and the lack of a camera flash is a letdown but one I could live with.
Samsung is known for not supporting their phones after release but they have confirmed that the Galaxy will be updated with Froyo. On 2G the battery is rated for talk time longer than the iPhone 4G and is of course replaceable. Also 16GB built-in + add a 32GB micro sd card and you have more storage than nearly any smartphone.

but you might want to do a little research on the Samsung support on thier phones. from what I have seen... it is a very big issue. they tend to push out great spec phones and then move on to the next phone to develop; and forget the old.
some times it is not just the specs. how the parts add and give you over all total performance. From reading on other phones.. (ex: hero vs moment).
But it's a Samsung...

That's better than htc who puts out phones with glaring problems and then stops supporting them. I haven't had an htc Pune since the tilt. I was hoping they had changed so I could get an evo, but apparently they haven't. I'm liking the galaxy s pro right now.

The Galaxy is nice, but if you like the developing and deep hacking and customizing.
HTC is the way to go.

ok is it me or does this thing REALLY look like an iphone clone? Don't get me wrong the specs are good, but that Touchwiz overlay is a huge negative for me. In addition the only advantages I see the Galaxy S as having is the internal storage (which doesn't matter to me because I haven't even filled up my 16gb card half way yet, so an extra 8/16gb of storage doesn't excite me), the screen resolution (I'd rather have less resolution and a larger screen though), and the processor (same clock speed but faster gpu, seeing as I don't do an extensive amount of gaming on my phone I couldn't careless about that. Not to mention the gaming I do with games such as Gangstar and Nova, which are 3d environments, run perfectly fine). The disadvantages for me would be: lack of 4g (I get great 4g coverage here in Atlanta and also get good speeds on it 4-8megs), lack of camera flash, does not come with flash (you will have to wait until froyo, or install a custom rom to do any browsing that involves flash), and below average speakerphone. The phone looks like a decent phone but it does not have enough advantages for me to make a switch. Just my opinion.
I'll pass on the samsung. I'm really not digging their skinning either. With their post support issues I think I'd rather deal with apple and the iphone or motorola and their new high end droid. That said I'm not going to go and get raped by verizon, I don't want to get raped by at&t either and I'm happy with my evo.

I agree about the looks! It looks way too much like an iPhone and the UI screenshots don't make it look any better. But have you seen the long demo video on YouTube? I forget which one it was, but I have to admit I was pretty impressed by the way it all flowed and this is coming from a guy who loves HTC Sense.
For someone like me, the extra 16GB would mean that I could ditch my iPod 160GB Classic and just have one device (I like to keep all my music and audiobooks on one device). Also reported by a few different blogs, the Galaxy screen is better and the hummingbird is reported too as being faster than the snapdragon in our Evos. And I guess I'm alone in this, but the super slim profile is a huge plus to me. But that back cover is pretty ugly. I'd really just like to demo this thing myself, with my Evo in hand and then decide. I'd also like to do the same with the iPhone 4G. These devices coming out on different dates, sure does making the choice making that much harder.........

I keep reading different carriers. Samsung has said they want the device to be on every carrier in every country and so if that holds true then it will be on all but my question is who will have it first late this month or next month as reported. I have seen some screenshots, showing T-Mobile account data on a Galaxy screen, but now I'm hearing Verizon and ATT as well.......

naw i like them because they build quality devices and have awesome customer support. i feel they do things right for the most part. i bet after u get done waiting for root on the samsung ull be trying to fix just as many things. also xda and all the other dev communities for HTC devices are well rounded and have a major following. HTC has been spiting out awesome devices for a long time. ive been hooked since my Axim X50v. that was back in 03

I'm with you all the way on it, i like how motorola designed the droid X but not their software, and I wouldn't get a motorola anyways.
I'm looking to get a new Android phone. I'm currently using an iPhone 4 which I love but would love to play with Froyo. I've previously had the Sprint Hero, European Hero, Nexus 1, and the Droid Incredible... I'm looking to get an Android phone that I can stick with and won't be dissatisfied with and it looks like Froyo will aide in this significantly. I'm looking for a FAST phone with the highest res screen I can find on an droid phone to use with Froyo... Any suggestions?

i dont know about Froyo, but so far the best android phone out so far, and that i know of, is the HTC DESIRE. it has really good resolution also. the camera is very sharp and clear. YouTube runs very nicely; 1Ghz processor is just too cool, the fastest in today's phones.
i have had it for 10 days now, and so far no problems with it at all in any area. i think i have tried all the things worth trying, except for music. yeah, sorry that i have not tried yet.

I've had many android phones and I'm currently using the samsung galaxy s. In my opinion it's easily the best handset on the market the now.screen is amazing with the super amoled, and can play divx hd files! And has tv out. I believe it will also receive the froyo update.

x2 on galaxy s...its available for preorders tomorrow 15 jul. and also available on wirefly...this phone has a dedicated gpu..some say 4x better gfx processing than the i phone 4..im preordering 1 tomorrow from tmobile...Cheers!!
Don't get a phone with a Snapdragon processor in it. The graphics sucks and will never compare to even the oldest iPhone. Your best bet it in the Droid X or Droid 2 on Verizon. Or one of the 5 Galaxy S phones coming to each of the major providers in the US.
I personally recommend the Sprint Epic 4G. It's a Galaxy S phone with front facing camera, hardware keyboard, and 4G WiMax network. The data plans on Sprint are extremely cheap and cost less than any other provider, even with the required $10 4G data plan.

I think you need to get your sources straight. I have used all the iPhones up to the 3GS, and the Nexus One's graphic resolution is so far better than any of them. So when you're saying "The graphics sucks and will never compare to even the oldest iPhone", I don't think you have enough experience using smart phones to make such a statement.

There is a difference between resolution on websites, text, and video than there are on games. I had a Nexus one, when I had it there were NO games on the Android Market that matched the visual quality of the iPhone games. Prince of Persia, Assassins Creed, Street Fighter 4, Archetype, hell even Field Runners are all games that I haven't seen matched in the Android Market yet. Keep in mind, I've had Sprint Hero, Euro Hero, Nexus One, and an Incredible... so I know what I'm talking about. By the very technical nature of the hardware, the iPhone having a really good dedicated GPU (by mobile standards) it would impossible for a non dedicated GPU solution to match it.
My concern now is if I get the Droid X, or one of the Galaxy Phones that have a dedicated GPU, will developers make a variety of games to use these dedicated GPU's seeing as the majority of Android phones do not have one... Will developers risk the money spent in time and development for the minority of phones. AND if they do, how do I go about finding these on the Android market?
I wish Google would make a section for specific phones that applications or games might be optimized for or some way to tell what hardware a game was optimized for.
Lastly another consideration for my decision is how long I will have to wait to get 2.2 on my phone. I'd take a slightly less good phone if it means there is 6 months I have less to wait on getting 2.2. The whole reason I'm getting an Android phone again anyway is for 2.2, 2.1 wasn't that great to me.
I really appreciate all the answers guys, it's got me thinking. So far I'm thinking about the Droid X, or Samsung Galaxy (or whatever each carrier calls it)...

The display is amazing, doesn't suffer from the subpixel issues of earlier amoled's, very vibrant and a nice size.
Very nice cpu and gpu combo.
And getting froyo in august according to a rep I spoke to when I bought mine.
Though, I don't think you'll be disappointed with any handset you get.

Droid x is digitally signed... so if you like root, good luck... I'm waiting for Verizon's new HTC... lord knows when or what that will be but they have to out do the evo... right? Just my thoughts

Desire uses the snapdragon, which includes an adreno gpu as part of the SoC. It is not independantly clockable.
If you really want to "play" with android, you should stick with your n1. Hardware-wise it is still basically tied for first with a bunch of new phones, and you can count on the fact that new android developments (including official Google releases like gingerbread) will happen for the n1 first.
A strong argument can be made for the n1 being the best phone in the world, still.
Don't get a droidx. They aren't as nasty as people think but it will be a while before it is rooted and there's no guarantee that its hardware will be supported by the devs quickly.
Galaxy S phones will be nice, with very good gpus and technically superior screens to the n1. You wont, however, really notice a difference in the screens, and Samsung phones are not likely to be hot modding tickets, at least here on xda. The better performance in numbers wont translate to the performance gains by software modding to the n1 by a long shot, either.
Also don't get a desire. Its the exact same hardware as the n1 (trackball vs. optical sensor, a non-issue really, and the camera res although the nexus's smaller photos have been tested to look much better despite that) except for the desire running sense, which is slow and awful. If you happen to like sense, hell, you can put it on your n1.
Just saying man. Never liked a phone as much as my nexus. Good luck on the hunt.
P.s. because I have my nexus, I have been running 2.2 (stock, then CyanogenMod 6) for a while. Love it. Don't expect to see 2.2 on anything else officially until fall.

currently the best screen out on the market in any device, iPhone 4's screen has slightly higher resolution but, colors will will definitely make the galaxy's screen more vibrant and 'alive'
the hummingbird processor in the galaxy is the fastest and most powerful cpu available in any phone right now, the GPU, is built into the cpu, its not separate, therefore games are easily able to run on this phone, you just...need a game that would be able to put it to the test.
currently so far as i know, quake 3 is the most graphics intensive game for android, and that's a cakewalk for the galaxy
as far as the touchwiz skin, i like it lol, keeps me away from a lot of android's flaws
but no froyo on it yet, samsung has confirmed it's release soon though

My concern now is if I get the Droid X, or one of the Galaxy Phones that have a dedicated GPU, will developers make a variety of games to use these dedicated GPU's seeing as the majority of Android phones do not have one... Will developers risk the money spent in time and development for the minority of phones. AND if they do, how do I go about finding these on the Android market?
I wish Google would make a section for specific phones that applications or games might be optimized for or some way to tell what hardware a game was optimized for.
Lastly another consideration for my decision is how long I will have to wait to get 2.2 on my phone. I'd take a slightly less good phone if it means there is 6 months I have less to wait on getting 2.2. The whole reason I'm getting an Android phone again anyway is for 2.2, 2.1 wasn't that great to me.
I really appreciate all the answers guys, it's got me thinking. So far I'm thinking about the Droid X, or Samsung Galaxy (or whatever each carrier calls it)...

hi guys. i dont know how much high graphics quality you need, but Desire works well for me in all areas that i use it for, including sharp quality images of camera.
PLUS IPHONE has compatiblity issues with other brands and a number of limitations which Android and Desire do not have.
SNAPDRAGON processor works beautifully and i just love the speeds.
with all due respect, APPLE has been in the world for a long time, with its ups and downs. Google has recently entered into the operating system sector, maybe 3 or 4 years, if i am not wrong. So, you need to be patient and give them time to come up to your expectations.
if Steve Jobs had not been recalled to Apple, it was gone. it was on the verge of bankruptcy, you know.
as for android and gpu, best is to read different articles and send your suggestions to the android people, rather than criticise them.

looks like you missed the main topic of this thread... there's a new Nexus S in the works with a newer cpu.. supposedly the dual core Orion from samsung. You are still talking about the old specs on the single core CPU. Maybe the change to Orion the radios will change also.
And maybe also the Nexus S will be able to transform into a transmitting device that can place cellular connections with other people that are scattered throughout the United States of America for the provider cost that is paid monthly and also be able to look up various information on the world wide web and display a H on the top of the taskbar which people will still assume is stock on all phones!!!!

Meh.
It isnt too exciting really. The things I want are a better physical design, improved build quality, vastly better battery life, at least iPhone 4 camera quality, proper multitouch, wireless inductive charging, 5ghz N wifi, HSPA+, higher resolution screen etc
Having a dual core processor doesnt do a thing for those issues (except the higher res screen, and even there a dual 1ghz processor is way overkill).
I thought i'd throw my 2cents is as a newb to the phone. I have probably wrestled with keeping it or selling it more than anyone these past two weeks of owning it. (in fact I actually advertised it with all accessories for sale, like stuff I bought thats on its way..but I've been having second thoughts).
Ok. For one, I was in awe of the Galaxy S, even though i hadn't seen one powered on in person. (Plus the girl I like mentioned it when we were talking about my "new phone" and asked if it was a Galaxy )
In all seriousness though, the discussions that got me leaning to the N1 noted:
- Form factor, form factor, form factor. Whether I like the specs or not, I have to like the bling (dare i say), or form factor in general. This phone just fits sweet in the pocket.
- In the other Nexus S thread, guys mentioned how they came back to their N1 after the Galaxy, and one chap mentioned how he's had his N1 for a year and it has no scratches without babying it. (I know from other HTC plastic phones that this can happen, and it does save you money in the long run by not wanting to buy "fresher" fones after 6 months, just based on the looks factor).
- Touchscreen. Yes it may not be as responsive as the Galaxy S, but I can live with it. And the more I think about it, I don't want to relearn how to flash and root a new device, and how to apply all the fixes. (i seriously spent a full week learning stuff for the N1 and thats a lot of investment).
And more applicably to the Nexus S. The first thing that struck me when I looked at it was it looked too bulgy. I gotta like the way my phone looks man and I gotta say after two weeks of owning this it is timeless and slim. AND i'm not just saying this, because I have a buyer already waiting ..who i've been procrastinating turning down. NEway, later for that ;P (I'll help him find a nice one on ebay tho)
one thing i realized without thinking about it too, is there is brand loyalty involved too. I never really realized this before until I saw you guys' sigs, and looked back. i have been an htc fan and never really noticed it. now I know why.

I would still wait, personally, for a nexus phone with the same form factor as this one. Too slim!
If it is really an orion cpu and can work on the same tzones/web2go plan then i would switch and give up the superior design of the nexus.
If it is licensed thru tmo, you will likely need a full data plan...
Afaik only the dev phones can pull this off as tmo has no record of the imei

Been using Nexus One, near the beginning when it came out. Other than the poor speakers and the multi-touch issue, it served me well. To this date, nothing seems to be worth upgrading to. At first, LG optimus 2 seemed an ideal upgrade, but still wasn't "interesting" enough.
Watching CES, this Motrolla Atrix, has really caught my attention.

Front/back facing camera, tegra 2 dual core, 1gb ram, 1930 mAh battery (WOW?!),, HSPDA+, good screen resolution. But, most importantly, that desktop app looks amazing. This is the first phone, since Nexus 1, which I felt was made to get market share rather than profit, in that, they really tried not skimping out on ANYTHING (I guess though retrospectively, HTC did on MT/speakers). I mean, the only thing I could see which could have been improved on this phone is 8MP camera instead of 5MP, but that difference is so minor imo.
I don't have the video, but it showed an nvidia zone - for apps which take advantage of tegra 2, which showed off a lot of cool multiplayer games, which you can play online against console owners (PS3/XboxLive) as well as fellow tegra-2 based mobile phones, which was neat.
This may be the phone, which I will upgrade to, when I decide to do so, or it will be an iphone 5(though never have used an iphone). Orion may be the better chip, when released, but the Nvidia zone thingy on CES sold me this over the Orion chip.
In order:
1) Motorola Atrix --- the TOP phone of CES. 1GB of Ram, 1930mAh Battery, HSPA+, Laptop dock, Dual core etc...
2) LG Optimus 2x / Droid Bionic --- HDMI mirroring is an insane ability for a phone to have, allow you to play any game emulator on a big screen TV with your phone and a wiimote
3) G-slate / Xoom tablets --- Honeycomb has tons of eye candy and looks great. Cant wait to try these out in the store.
Now while these things interest me, probably won't be enough to get me to give up my $40/mo Nexus 1

From the videos and things I read about it the Atrix doesn't have pure HDMI mirroring by just plugging in a cable. I could easily be wrong though since theres not even an official review. I hope I'm wrong
Disappointed by HTC. Same old processor and battery improvement only slightly.
I agree that Motorola Atrix is the best phone so far, followed closely by the LG Optimus 2x and then the Samsung Infuse.

I been running my n1 on ATT so when I saw MOTO atrix I was all giddy. This is a monster. I think I will trade my n1 for that. But that's if I can pry off my n1 out of my hands. It will be tough but clearly its the best phone that can replace my n1. I am just glad I never used my upgrade on a iPhone. Lol. So so happy. I guess I now have to stay with ATT.

Totally agree and since I have been using an AT&T Nexus this is perfect.
The screen is bigger than Nexus 4" vice 3.7", but the Atrix phone is smaller and thinner and a few grams heavier than the Nexus
Like the three docks but wish it had the docking pins like the Nexus
Overall I can't wait to get my hands on it.
Edit: wish it was LTE compatible, seems that is going to be a weak point for this phone.
This sucks I am really looking forward to something that is decent on tmo.. I love my bill with tmo and am just looking for something decent which we all knew the "S" wasn't. CES has not had anything that looks good for tmo yet.. besides tablets..
Some key differences between the Atrix and the 2X that noone has been talking about yet is the better quality cameras on the 2X. The back camera is an 8mp and personally I miss my 8mp smartphones. I haven't had one since I traded my Omnia HD for my beloved N1. Also the 2X has a 1.3mp front cam which is the least amount of megapixels I'd accept if I were to do video calling in any kind of frequent capacity. Now on the Atrix side, they have obviously the webtop and desktop applications, but also it has an amazing screen resolution of 540X960, comparable to the 640X960 retina display of the iphone. My only take away from the Atrix is the front camera only being a simple vga cam, that couldn't possibly look good on the other side. When it comes down to me personally, they both offer what I want at the core, the Tegra 2. So my decision will be made up by which one will work once I snatch it away to use on T-mobile's 4G network.

This is a big thumbs up and the main reson I was holding out for a new phone. Just can't wait until the rest of the dual cores come out. Now I know for sure that Google released a dead duck with the nexus s compared to the Motorola. The spec makes it a monster and a true upgrade.

Motorola xoom was the highlight. Smartphones didn't impress me much. I'm happy with the nexus one.
But the xoom tablet won me as soon as I could see those tron style astethics.

Xoom is pure amazingness in my opinion... finally a tablet that looks futuristic and fun to play with... the iphone is so bland and has no compatibility, i feel like it is completely disconnected from the world and all the new tabs like the GS tabs (played with one at tmobile) feel just like an enlarged version of my nexus or an ipad wannabe... yuck
the Atrix literally made my jaw hit the floor... those docking capabilities are EXACTLY what i want my phone to be able to do... I think i said in another thread (n1 end of life thread?) about how i would like to dock my phone up and turn it into my pc... granted not play super intensive games like my desktop currently does but give me the feel that i always have my computer at the palm of my hands... and the laptop dock looked sick too, i wonder how much that puppy is going to cost haha

VGA front cam is not too bad, for videos at least. Aren't DVD movies at VGA resolution? DVD movies look great on old TVs. I'm pretty sure it will look fine on a 4" screen. I hope...
the news that got me pretty excited is samsung's new super amoled plus screen. the pentile pixels are gone! pixels go from 8 on the old S-AMOLED up to 12 on S-AMOLED plus. pure awesomeness sharp text.

You're wrong on your strict assumptions. I have both a EVO 4G + iPhone 4 (as well as a N1). The EVO has a 8MP + 1.x MP FFC and the iPhone has 5MP + VGA. Simply put, the iPhone takes much better photos for both the front and back. The front facing cam is especially better, the EVO seems to have a really poor sensor for the FFC -- so MP != quality. Of course this doesn't mean that the Atrix cams are better but it's something to wait on before making assumptions.
To me the Atrix wins by a land slide. Better resolution, probably double the RAM, double the internal storage, plus a battery that's about 25% bigger. It's also HSPA+ and AT&T recently announced that they've already upgraded their entire 3G network to HSPA+. But it seems like you are stuck with T-Mo so you shouldn't even be looking at the Atrix anyway.

Atrix is HSPA+.
I joined this forum actually to get some android help from ya'll you see well I live in Brazil and my parents in the USA, so I dropped my iPhone 3G (yes 3G not 3GS) and the touch screen cracked, so I would like to know from you guys that have more experience with Android if the Nexus One is a good phone still - compared that I only had a iPhone 3G which is not that great nowadays lol. So like the title of the topic says, is the nexus one still a good phone to this day compared at least to my old phone?
The community is also very active with updating it to the latest android it seems, and besides all I do with my phone is send SMS, read e-books and play Angry Birds and other games of that type, and a better camera would be welcome also.

Yes, the Nexus One is an awesome today still, but something that's a tad annoying is the power button. It might start to fail relatively early or just completely die and a replacement costs as much as a used Nexus One.

I read online that if you root your phone, you can use the trackball to power it on and other methods, does it still apply to the latest version of android that N1 runs?

and is not about newer or such it is more about cost and as I am in Brazil, the phones here are expensive and I don't have much to work with anyways, so the N1 is a good and very affordable option and already comes unlock, well I could root the Desire HD but hey, the N1 already comes unblocked lol

To be able to unlock your screen with either the volume buttons or the trackball itself, you would need to flash a custom ROM.

I don't know what planet you live on, but it's not the planet called "Reality." I have a SGSII and it has all of these great specs, but quite honestly, it's an inferior phone to the Nexus One. The Galaxy nexus and the Nexus S just blow it away.
There are so many things you can do with native android that you either can't do or are just a plain old pain in the ass compared to my nexus one.
The only things the Galaxy S II has on the N1 are internet speed (only in certain areas), camera and screen size/brightness.
Get the N1 and don't listen to spec hounds. Specs don't mean crap.

I believe you're the one that needs reality check.
A phone with extremely annoying and non-repairable touchscreen problem, faulty power button construction that makes it vulnerable and prone to failure, lousy sub-par GPU, slow USB transfer speeds, and you're suggesting it over much newer and better ones?
And to the OS argument - plain Android OS, at least till ICS, is crap - and IMHO, ICS adds nothing in exactly those areas that need adding. Any overlay will add LOTS of capabilities to it - be is crappy TouchWiz 3, much better TouchWiz 4 or also much better Sense 3/3.5. I posted enough comparisons of my own that show exactly where and how pure Android or CyanogenMod fall short and can't reach, no matter how you try.
Shortly - for the price of used or new N1, there are MUCH better options today. Sorry to disappoint.
It's not a bad phone, and some of my friends are still using it. Its quirks are livable with, if you don't demand gaming capabilities, and if you don't mind to occasionally turn off/on the screen when everything messes up, especially during navigation. If you already have it, there isn't much pressure to upgrade, if you can live with it. But if you're making your decision today - N1 is a bad decision.
And personally, neither me nor my wife found its quirks to be livable with. I lived with it for a year, because there were no better options at the time. My wife moved to another phone after 3 or 4 months.
If you want a good phone - see what fits your network. Being in Brazil, you probably need 850/1900MHz band phones, and all good MSM8x55 family models (Desire HD, Desire S, Desire Z/G2, MyTouch 4G/HTC Panache) are 900/2100 or 1700/2100 band. If some of those models exist with the bands you need - the suggestion is indeed to move to one of those. It'll be completely another world from Nexus One.

Way to lose all credibility in four words.
There are plenty of phones that came out after the nexus one that are better candidates. As others have said, the nexus one has a few too many hardware flaws that make it really crappy as a daily phone versus being a nice tinkering phone. The buggy digitizer and abysmal internal storage are two things that irritate me daily.
I would recommend checking out the Sony Ericsson Neo. The mytouch 4g is nice too; also known as the htc panache. If your budget is really tight you can look at the LG optimus one or something equivalent. You will still get the Google services with tradeoffs of using manufacturers' skins.

As much as I love my Nexus One (power button and touch screen problems do not affect me that much), I wouldn't buy one now. Other phones with equal or better performance are in the same price range.

My iPhone 3G that I let it fall and crack the touchscreen -.- I mainly used it for sending SMS and calling, reading ebooks, and playing games such as Angry Birds, Jetpack Joyride, so nothing heavy on the phone, hell I barely used the camera since I always had my digital with me when I wanted to take a picture.
And I totally forgot about the BAND stuff, because when I bought my iPhone 3G to Brazil from the USA, I just unlocked it and voila I was using it, so now you got me, and I was reading a topic (not on this forum) about the Galaxy Europa (or Galaxy 5) and there is many differente basebands you can download, so I don't know if specific basebands only apply to Android phones or all phones, and I just got lucky with me iPhone 3G

Thanks mate, I will check on them, currently on eBay I see Nexus Ones going around for 70-100
mostly are around the 80s, so if I do buy one for 80 bucks is it worth it? The chances of having a headache with the phone are they common?
If there are any other phones in the same range @ eBay 80-100 (max 110) could you guys please help me out

EDIT: Internal Storage, but can't you use a microSD card and plug it into the phone and it will extend its memory, or is the SDcard only used for certains items and the internal for other stuff - but isn't there something that lets you choose the partition size?

nexusone in question is an HTC phone made carefully for Google for developing android os in its first days and was the best in those days and still it is one of the best ones i believe, you just have to bear crappy start button which in some phones fail to operate and the Sonys freaky super LCD screen seen on late models. in my option super amoled screens are waaay better which can be seen on first models which i believe are better in quality from the newer ones ı used both and the early model which ı still keep as a spare phone is still working with no problems while the late model one which i sold did had problems with screen digitization and start button and comparing two of them ı sold the newer model as ı kept the older one so if you are buying a nexusone it is like lotary you can be lucky or unlucky depending the factory conditions while it is been made if you ask me i would recomend to buy one with amoled screen and buy it by seeing and touching it fizically.. but with the money you may spend on a nexus you can get a samsung galaxy S 16 gb and it will run flawlessly the new versions of android and plenty of memory in it if you are in to games with its 3d engine it will be great for you while you can keep lots of books to read in its huge memory yes it is not good looking as nexusone but it will last longer because it is plastic and drop resistant because of it....coming from iphone you will get use to it quicker since they look similar goodluck

Today I found an AMOLED Nexus One on ebay for sale, and it says it is the T-Mobile one but it is still unlocked to other GSM carriers worldwide right?
The Galaxy S is bit to pricey for my budget at the moment.

MyTouch 4G I have not been able to find one for 150, but seen many 200 and up (way up)

I did not metion samsung as i know they are crappy. I have both n1 and Desire HD and Desire HD just outpreforms the n1 on every aspect. The n1 is still a good phone, but not a good choice to buy right now.

Right now it is not the best choice. Definetly you can find better phones around. But we are talking about a smartphone quite old. But I love it, great community even if now the interest on this phone is gradually decreasing.

That said. The Galaxy S II Hercules would be a great phone if it had dev support or native android. Since it doesn't it loses a lot for me.
The Nexus One Desktop Dock is fantastic. There's no bloatware and the phone is pretty fast. Again, it may not have the specs of nearly all phones coming out today, but being a developer phone with native android makes it very competitive with most. When your talking about spending less than $200 for one versus $800 for the super phones of today, to me, it's a no brainer.
I'm using the GSII because it's faster and has a bigger brighter screen, but the bloatware & TouchWiz are just awful. After 48 hours with the phone, I rooted it and found that the choices for ROMs were paltry. I'm running "Dewizzed" and the battery drains in 10 hours.
No matter what the specs are I find these issues very troubling and dang near unacceptable.
I'm saving my sheckles for another Nexus. Either the S or the Galaxy...maybe both.
So is it safe to assume that on a tight budget of 80-100 bucks the best bet would be to buy a Nexus One (since it is already unlocked, and not a bad phone and great community support and hell even made it to use the 2.3.7) Also I would acquire one that was in good condition and with charger batteries and etc
So is my notion above right?
