Any developers here? - Xperia Arc General

I was just wondering how many developers are using an Arc? (with developers i mean rom cookers)
--edit
wanted to post in general but was on the wrong tab

Ditto on this one, anything that springs to mind for future projects

I was more wondering what happens if we have root, ublocked bootloader. i am sure the arc has more horse power than what it has now. Maybe it's tme to learn how to build roms, i'm a Linux user so it doesn't have to be hard .
It would be great to see cyanogenmod on the arc or just tweaks to the OEM rom.

Hopefully all the X10 devs + some N1/Desire devs will come here.
All I know is that Paul from modaco is waiting like us the ''password'' to unlock his Play, knowing it's the same File System and protections he will produce exellent roms for us.
CM7 and MIUI will surelly be adapted.
I don't think the scenario of X10 will be repeated, many devs were willing to work on custom roms but the phone was locked for a several months so they abandoned and swaped their x10.
As for the ARC it all depends on SE, sooner they release the keys and better are the chances to get many roms, the more they wait and the less devs will support the Arc ...

It will be great to see great roms on the ARC like CM7 and MIUI. so all we have to do is wait on the unlocked bootloader. hope to see it get released soon

For exemple, HTC just unveiled the Sensation with the new high resolution screen, if it gets rooted before the Arc then I will swap my Arc with one of them

I think the bootloader will be locked, thats what it looks like. i just read tweets from paul about bootloader

So finally the Arc will be a great device for custom roms!
The hundreds of devs coming from HTC will preffer the build quality of the Arc over the cheapos LG and samsung

That would be great though there a lot devs with LG2X i had to choose between SE and LG but then i thought nice thing but it's LG
now HTC is locking everything devs would look at other phones. the Arc, Play and Neo are similar so i think if one has a custom rom porting it to another wouldn't be that hard

All im interested in atm is rooting
So does anyone have any idea of when we will get it rooted?

On the SE dev blog they said it will be ''later in spring''.
So if they want to keep their promise they have till 20th June max
I think I can smell it toward end May don't ask me why

No no, June is summer...end of May, TOPS!

I hope this time they will keep their promise and no postpone at all!
How many time they postponed release of phones,FW updates...?
But here if they want SE Arc to be a success even among dual core phones they should release the root before SGS2 enter the market because this one will be rooted in 24h

That´s true! Sony Ericsson MUST do this! Does the unlocked bootloader means root?

No but unlocking the bootloader means we can use fastboot command, any good dev can then build a root method in a couple of minutes or hours.
If Amon Ra and clockwork recoveries are implemented it's even better,we can then backup, wipe, format partitions to ext 2-3-4...on the phone itself exactly like on nexus one and desire
Custom Kernels will follow too, increasing battery life or overcloacking the cpu...
This dev section will have tons of roms to chose from

Dev support starting to diminish?

So we've have some devs recently that have either announced that they are stopping/slowing down support or have gone entirely... Anyone feel like this is the beginning of the end for our beloved X10?
This is the list so far:
1. Zdzihu (has slowed down support for his roms and haven't seen any activity from him in over 2 weeks)
2. Cobrato (has stopped development on his MIUI rom)
3. TripNraver (Has also stopped development on all his roms due to personal reasons)
4. Achotjan (has announced that he will be slowing down support as he will be/is a student)
5. Jerpelea (havent seen anything from him in awhile (or is he a part of the freeXperia team?)
*EDIT* Heard that he changed his name to FXP and is still very much active!
6. Rdannar (gone because his phone is broke)
7. Z!GZA!G (new and promising dev but phone broke as well )
We still have very active support from Wolfbreak, nasif619, spaarc and Erickwill in terms of roms and also from Doomlord, Thjap and Azuzu for their kernels and tweaks as well as some releases from other newcomers but I cant help but feel like we're in a bit of trouble...
Anybody else that I'm missing or didn't give credit to? let me know and I'll update the list.. Maybe we can come up with some way to get some devs back on out device or have more development going
unfortunately this is the circle of life.
Support goes to the new generation of devices.Just get over it.
We have more than we imagined when we bought x10.

1. Z is around, don't worry. Hopefully he's busy with providing a bootloader unlock (just dreamin' ) He never posted that much, just compare his post count with what he achieved for our x10. He's not someone who just talks and promises a lot, but when he's posting you can be almost sure that it's either a fix or a major breakthrough that is already prepared for public release
2. Cobrato said he won't continue developing MIUI ROMs because it's a lot of worked without sources (MIUI sources are not released to public). As far as I know he didn't say, he doesn't develop anymore. So let's see what'll come from him
3. Trip left xda by his own choice. If he also stopped dev'ing on modaco, that's sad, but personal reasons are more important than development. Btw. wasn't he planning to dev for the Sensation? Didn't see a single ROM from him there.
4. Achotjan slows own, right. That doesn't mean he's gone.
5. Jp - are you talking about Jerpelea? If so you must be kidding. He's the heart of the FreeXperia team, developing for all Xperia phones atm (X10/mini/pro, Arc, Play, mini/pro from 2011, ...). Recently he changed his name to FXP (FreeXPeria?) so don't get confused.
6. rdannar & Z!GZA!G: didn't know that. It's really a pitty. I hope they'll be back with new or repaired phones
Good to know that Z and FXP are still doing their thing! I'm a bit of a flashaholic so I get real sad when I dont see updates for a couple days... but you're right... it is the cycle of life and it will happen sooner or later.
Hopefully if bootloader gets unlocked, it will bring back a lot of dev activity
I doubt there is enough interest to unlock the bootloader now.
oddly enough we're at a weird point right now....
older phones are so old they are losing dev support, and also there are so many good newer phones that are so new causing them to have little dev support lol

Well devs are humans they have other things to do..
I feel that we already got too much support from developers on our X10 and even though things have naturally slowed down, there is still some notable activity.
And maybe it's time for normal users like us to read and research and make our own progress! Will be fun!

I really think that the devs have done an amazing job with this phone, such so that I see no incentives in upgrading my phone to a newer model.. However is there really much more they can do? The only two things I see as missing from the software side is lack of a fully unlocked bootloader and the 16 million colour screen! But there's no real need for an unlocked bootloader and the 16 million colours is only going to happen if SE release source codes..
So really I feel that we've been lucky to have such amazing dev support for the last year. They've pushed this phone to its limits and without them what would we do!
All I can say is that they've done a great job and I hope to see some more of their work down the line!

what is 3x kernel?
Yes, I'm afraid. The dev support for this phone is slowly diminishing. It's sad because they have achieved so much with this phone. At the same time, what else is there to do with this phone that hasn't been done already, or that doesn't need an unlocked bootloader. Hopefully Z comes out with some good news about the bootloader soon, that should keep people here a bit longer.
I hope that one or two devs stay till the end, I came in late in the game so I'm stuck with this phone on a contract until March 2013! D:
That being said, I do love this phone. It's not only my first smartphone, but it's my first ever phone. It has a strange sentimental value to me
Just my too sense.
its the kernel from when we got the gingerbread update. the custom kernel we have is based on the older kernel but our devs have fixed so it works on gingerbread

Desire HD users have been left out

Hello my fellow HTC Desire HD users and developers.
My name is StJohn, I'm from South Africa.
I'm very dissapointed to see that we have been left behind in the ICS race.
Nexus one users are seeing progress with ICS, along with the desire users, and a couple others. The desire users already have a flashable ZIP...
So heres the big question:
Where is our ICS progress? Is there no developers working on one for us?
The Desire HD hardware is ahead of the desire, so thats not an excuse. And I
know theres no source code yet, but developers are making progress with the SDK just to give users a taste of ICS at least. I just want to see the same progress for the Desire HD users. Wheres our ICS?
Hi
Developers here tend to wait for the official release before doing anything like that. It saves a ton of hassle because theres less that will go wrong and less complaints and things.

Yep, Cyanogen is the most stock like custom ROM I know of, and if they can't make it yet, it must not be fit for general use.

While I agree with the point. CM mod is not really all that close to stock anymore. It has its own framework and built in mods. Nothing wring with it as I use a CM bases rom from time to time.
But I do agree with the fact they are wanting to wait for the source. The sdk is not enough to build anything worth releasing right now. Mainly with huge population of new to Modding people on XDA now. A couple of years ago I would have been all over the sdk as well and tossed something out there knowing that the people using it would be able to help with the loads of issues that it Will have for sure. Can't do that now. To many people blindly flashing with know real idea of what is going on and don't know how to give proper feedback and bug reports. Now I know this is just due to people being new and we were all new at once but now there are more people coming from an iPhone or this is there first smartphone and can't really release what we used to.
Considering that the Galaxy Nexus hasn't even been released yet, saying that DHD users have been left behind is totally ridiculous.

Remember assumptions are the mother of all F**K Ups
They have been trying. They have it booting but the touchscreen does not work so nothing can be done.
To be fair, its all different hardware niggles, the end of the day..you could have a dev release a rom...that has a hundred bugs and is generally ****. Gingerbread came out, which was good you could test it but really pissed you off in a way that there was no way to use it daily unless you fancied losing wifi or no bluetooth.
Patience is the key.Why are there so many threads about this **** lol its every time, i do also want to post numerous threads regarding this but patience. How has the hd been left behind anyway, we have had every release so far besides ice cream
i'm almost sure DHD won't get ICS... technicaly DHD could get an 2.3.4 or 2.3.5 official OTA anytime but HTC waits until ICS will hit Sensations. Just about one month before that, DHD will get 2.3.5 as final official update...
It was the same with Hero last year... when htc rolled 2.1 on HERO just before the 2.2 launch on the newer devices. It's all marketing and I'm sure the carriers are the key players... especially the ones in US. They are making the rules and the 2 years product rollout cycle.
I'm also pretty sure that HTC "supports" the "rooting and custom roms development"... as some kind of justice for the HTC hard core consumers...
One way or another ICS will come to the dhd... If its not official it will be a port or cyanogen.
But atm i'm really happy with the 2.3.5 runny rom^^ Lets just be a little patient!

The Sensation is getting ICS so I'm very sure the DHD will get it.
If you don't think so have more faith in devs on xda.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
in that 2 page thread it says
"New devices,i.e,Released after May 2011 will receive the updates prior to the old phones like Desire HD"
What that means? no ICS TO DHD? ?
did not understadn fully that thing there please explain?
All I want, and so many other people, is a taste of ICS, Just a test drive, I'm not asking for daily use, and the expression "left out" is referring to the SDK roms coming out, not the official source code or official release of ICS.
Just want to see some progress to a flashable ICS port, and now I am seeing that over at the development forum so this is good.
This may a ridiculous question (sorry in advance) but would any port of ICS still have the SRS settings for the music player?

Ideas to make Xperia S loved by XDA devs

I had an Arc for 1 month, I really liked it but I couldn't live without a variety of custom roms
I am now on Sensation and thinking about the Xperia S (sorry no proper section yet),this upcoming phone is totally awesome in both look and features, BUT I am afraid XDA devs will not be interested again...
Though I think the only way to make it sexy for them is that:
-Sony send a free device(s) to known devs team like CM,Virtuous,MIUI,Modaco...
If you have other ideas then throw them here
Sony gave Arc and Arc S to CM devs, so don't complain
Developement is harder on SE devices than on for example on HTC decices from what I've heard - that's the reason why we don't have that much devs
Sent from my iPad 2 using Tapatalk
Sony Ericsson always used quite a lot of special hardware, especially when it comes to camera sensors. It's always been a challenge for developers to get those to work on custom roms.
The problem in 2011 is that there was too much time between the hardware release and the availability of certain sources and the bootloader unlock.
If they make sure the Xperia S can be unlocked right away and the sources are available fast then we might get a lot of development going on.
Then again, Sony doesn't care that much, the vast majority of users doesn't even root, so they focus mainly on the stock ROMs. And they are the best of all stock ROMs. By far. And the default software on the 2012 looks to be extremely good and complete.

Imo, they totally do.
You could check this e.g.
IMO SE has tried all hard to support XDA in terms of development let's hope under Sony's management they do the same.
Best way to make them interested is to buy them one with donations.
Never fails!

It's very hard to turn a hTC dev into a Sony one, though a samsung one is easy because whatever galaxy series are good they lack the higher grade materials used by Sony, specially Xperia S which look like a portable Bravia tv
The X10 gave a bad taste to xda devs, the Arc was not well liked too because it wasn't dual core, but now the xperia S with it's very good CPU,12mp camera and HD screen should be perfect!
They just have to promote it better in advertisements inside xda and other forums adv spaces, the Google Nexus Prime is very well advertised for exemple, there is a remarquable ''push'' marketing

I think, they really do.
Afaik there are already two XDA members from Sony.
And btw, SE/Sony was the first manufacturer, who gave the community a official way to unlock the BL of devices (now HTC does the same).
Once they released camera libs to FXP team.
They even released a ICS alpha for XDA devs.
I haven't seen another manufacturer doing something like that.
(correct me if I'm wrong at some point)
So why the custom roms on Arc are so poor?
I was expecting 10x more specially that it was unlocked way before Sensation (I was here).
I hope sgs3 will not flame devs again and forget about xperia S

I think it's because most of the developers was behind Dual core devices like HTC Sensation, Samsung etc. but we are making progress we have a great team of dedicated developers like FreeXperia Team. Now our device is under official CM chart. We have most popular custom ROMs like MIUI, CM and few stock based ROM. Lot of the other custom ROM's I have seen are most based on CM so doesn't make much difference. The exceptions are Oxygen, SuperOSR etc. Those developers are active with Nexus devices.
Unlike other devices Sony is little hard to develop due to heavy customization and hardware. Compared to other manufactures Sony has only few customers. HTC users stay with HTC, Samsung users stays with Samsung devices and upgrade to newer Samsung model but they hardly change from HTC to Samsung etc. So it will take time. I'm guessing by Xperia S release we might see few more developers because now we have more advance hardware people might consider upgrading to Sony. But I'm happy with the development what we have now.
i already love the Xperia S
will surely be buying it....
though i dont mind if the community donates a Xperia ION/Xperia S
i dont think no. of custom ROMs is really something to worry about...
we dont need half baked ROMs which are all basically stock ROMs just with some apps removed/added and few "cosmetic" changes... i have seen may communities which have TONS of roms which are hardly 2% different from stock ROM... thats not going to help... just a few well supported and developed ROMs is all that is needed... oh and dont forget powerful kernels as however good a ROM is it cant fully use the power of the device unless u have excellent kernels...
as for general developer interest... HTC & Samsung devices are most loved by devs because of the open nature of the vendors... also both of these vendors have a HUGE user base... some developers prefer to work only on devices which are widely used...

Based on my experience with LG Optimus 2x with unlocked and standard bootloader, it is very easy to bring back brick Optimus 2x by using nvflash/smartflash way. I can mess with partition size without worry about non bootable android device.
And now, android development in Optimus 2x getting rise, many new ROMs get published..
If Sony gives those flexibility with their phone(not to worry about brick phone as long it is related with software), I believe we can really mess with Sony Xperia S
Cheers

I agree with DoomLoRD its better to have quality over quantity. Few ROMs but stable, fast, and beautiful instead of bunch of ROMs that hardly have difference from the STOCK one or improve nothing its pointless.
I don't agree with samsung actual users being loyal to the brand, most of sgs2 users are freshly converted people from symbian/bb/iphone to Android. They wanted the best specs from the beginning, though they are a little deceived by the poor plastic and design.SE Arc lacked the dual core and was sold at a high price which made people buy sgs2 instead, the Xperia S packs very good specs(12mp,dual core),superb design and appareantly nice materials!
So unless the sgs3 features quad-core cpu and also 12mp there are big chances to have people switching from sammy to Sony this time.
HTC fans are very loyal to HTC because of the Sense roms and super high quality aluminium materials, but some dudes like me who were SE fans in the past...we can come back to Sony again
Why should SGS II people switch to the Sony Xperia S?!
They should offer the same performance or SGS II should be faster due Exynos.

Never gonna happen. Even if they did, it would be as good as our ROMs in xda.
Sorry to say but Sony said that even Froyo isn't stabled for our X8..so why are we asking to have an Official Gingerbread from Sony..??I think that the ROM's in our forum is good enough..You guys can use SDE if you want to feel how does it taste to have an Official ROM..
It just my opinion..Do't get mad at me or anything..
EDIT:BTW the ICS is coming..
come on sony.......please do this........

Wont sign because we have GingerDX etc. We have a nice gingerbread, froyo and maybe in future a stable ics from master nAa. I like your idea but sony dont want give us the taste of gingerbread or even froyo.
But we had dx and the other devs who give us everything what could be done.
Meh..
Impossible...

Why bother ? The stuff we have here beats the **** out of any official update SE can give their phones plus we have so much more features...asking for an official update from those money sucking b*stards is actually like taking a huge step down
Signed
In your dreams ......

Aint signing on useless petition.Lets just hoping Sony will release new GB/ICS arm6 model so we can take "advantage" of it
Not gonna happen. Trust me. If they even do it, we all just gonna use it for a few minutes and go back to our custom roms.
Its few months too late for this (if we got this maybe half a year ago it would be better I guess..). But now its too late, we have far better custom ROMs than any SE stock update.
EDIT: Signed
Actually if u look at the good part if sony makes an update all the users with unlock boatloader can feel the difference from stock kernel and maybe we'll have real DT for synaptics(i know its just a dream but still...)

we all know that this is impossible by doing such rubbish thing ur degrading the value of petion system nah will never sign this we have almost perfect aosp gb

this is a 2 years old device and any company cant spend thier valuable time in updating it ....
already have gingerbread (like minicm 2.2.0) almost perfect, it will be nice have a froyo oficial, but never gonna happen bro

[Discussion] Jelly Bean on Xperia Play

So we have had unofficial versions of jellybean for a while now. All the way back to the jbx think tank. Now I hear there is a possibility for a Jellybean update(POSSIBLE. Please don't spam this thread saying "Jellybean never! Muahaha! And ect.) now that firmware has been finally certified for the first time in many months! Now let's get discussing! What are your thoughts on these things? Not just an official update but Jellybean in general.
They might release jellybean 4.1 (or 4.2 because theyre a bit late )
Because it has better performance and they already had some full ics builds
But i think itll last some time until theyre out
I expect a good performance because theyre getting paid for this stuff.
I think it will be possible if Sony will work with devs to get everything too 100% mainly the touchpad though

Just a theory, but i also hope that theyll release jb
Sorry but I don't think an official jellybean update will happen. They just announced their update plans concerning jellybean and some newer and more powerful devices ( arc s for example) won't be updated. More info on xperiablog.net.
So the new firmware might be for a superlate ICS update or just nothing really.
But I don't care because xda devs have made an amazing job to bring jellybean to our devices. Cosmicdan, cj360, farenheith and all the others, you guys worked very hard to get the most of this abandoned phone. Many devs naturally moved on to other devices, but you stayed for this very special and unique device which did not receive the official support it deserved.
So thank you guys, I won t be buying another Sony phone before long I think because of their catastrophic update policy ( and it doesnt seem it gets better), but you made me and still make me very happy with my phone.

You think sony's update policy is bad? You should see Nokia's, they are notorious for abandoning devices within months of their release. Probably why they've all but disappeared from the cellphone competition. Coming from Nokia handset's, N-gage, N900 etc, I'd say sony is a God Send.
Actually from my experience they are all bad in term of updates. I can only recommend Google Nexus devices, although Samsung devices come close because they don't lock their bootloaders, if it is, its usually Verizon or ATT.
For now I will only buy a Nexus device or an Xperia Play 2.

Very interesting stuff here. I don't really care if we get offical Jellybean. Ill probably switch to a Nexus phone since Im not much of a gamer and use this to play minecraft.

I'm not a big fan of either verizon or s.e. for the lack of support for this underdog of a phone. but the devs here obviously showed both of them that when you work together as one you can give people what they want...& thats the freedom of choice.

I am coming from iPhone 4, I have 3 android tablet so I am familiar with android. I was waiting for the Nexus 4 but decided to get Xperia instead. I was surprised at how cheap it is, I just bought it for $90 unlocked GSM. Its a tremendous value. I want to use it for emulation.
Anyways, I have spent the past few hours reading this forum trying to come up with a play of what to do when I comes in. I want to put ICS or Jelly Bean on it mainly because I want to have the virtual back and home buttons. I would appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction.

If u want emulation, remember that FPSe and Mupen64 got touchpad support ONLY on ICS and +.
So just flash last CM9.1 FXP 152 + farenheit fix and you're done.
Unfortunely, JB is still no go for us, because touchpad causes lag, nobody knows the reason. Except touchpad, JB is 100% funcional tough..
Jelly bean it will be like a gift in christmas for me xD come on developers work more on it!!!!!!!

The best rom thus far...
The best one I tried so far is this one
The gapps work (when flashed)
The SIM Card works (nice)
Relatively Stable
Fast Bootup
CyangenMod Based.
You do need an unlocked BL
I tried others like SlimBean but it was too buggy and the gapps kept failing on me.
Recommend giving this a try.
