Losing network connection completely stock Gingerbread 2.3.3 - Nexus One General

Ever since the Gingerbread update (I've manually updated to 2.3.3 stock by using the full image, wiped everything before), I occasionally lose network access completely. Not just data, but also calls.
My Wifi is enabled and that seems to remain connected, but my mobile network seems to just die.
I'm on Vodafone UK, London Area.
Interestingly, sometimes the bar lights are still showing as good reception, but i can't make calls and people can't call me.
Furthermore, when i search for networks it normally returns an Error. giving little information (something along the lines of: error while searching for networks)
Cycling airplane mode does not help. Sometimes power-cycling the phone doesn't help.
What does help, is when i click on "Use only 2G networks" - that seems to connect fine and i can make calls again. then, i can *sometimes* successfully go back to 3g but un-ticking the use only 2g networks.
I'm using stock 2.3.3
Baseband version:
32.41.00.32U_5.08.00.04
I tired updating the radio at one point to 5.12 but that seemed to have been so bad that i couldn't connect at all.
I think, that if my Wifi was turned off and I would use the network data connection, my "voice connection" (i.e. calls) would work fine - that is because i never see this problem when i'm outside using network data.
Is someone else seeing this?

Yeah, me too. I'm on T-Mobile in the US. It happens about once a week.

I use this workaround after many hours of investigation into the problem on various forums and with Vodafone...
1. O the keypad, type *#*#4636#*#*
2. From the menu select "Phone information"
3. Go down the list to "Select preferred network type" which, by default on Vodafone, is set to "WCDMA preferred".
4. Click on the drop down menu and select "GSM auto (PRL).
5. Exit all and reboot.
This not only improved my signal but also my battery life as well as I was not constantly seeking WCDMA. Don't worry, if you need data and are within a 3.5G area, it will use WCDMA.
Give it a try, you have nothing to lose and can always switch back.
Hope this helps.

Will give that a try.
I think at one point i had it set to that...
Will update if it solved my problem.

To be honest with you itay1, I had a few problems last year with the Vodafone firmware.
Not the least of which was the inability to send MMS's when connected to WiFi. and being given the run-around by Vodafone, who at one stage or another, blamed everything and everybody.
In the end I rooted my phone and switched to Cyangen Mod's and since then have had no problems. Besides which, IMHO, the CM7 stable version, released today, is far superior to the stock Gingerbread I tried from Google.

Thanks for the tips.
So i gave 5.12 Radio another try + your change for GSM auto (PRL) and so far it seems better.
I haven't lost network connectivity yet - however.. i'm starting to think it really might be up to Vodafone. Maybe they have network failures that they are not reporting.
Definitely going to switch at the end of contract. I hear GiffGaff have pretty awesome deals!

No internet

Both before and after the ota update, my internet icon will disappear, making my phone unable too use the internet (obviously), send texts, and sometimes even not let me make our receive phone calls. Why I do not know. I am sending this message on wifi right now, because my phone has both no internet and also no radio signal. I'm at my house and my house always has full reception and I get H for the internet. If anyone can help or direct me too something I can do that would be great.
I did call tmous and they said I had the my touch internet package and switched me to general android, but this did not help my problem. Thanks

It can take up to 4 hours for any web changes to take effect. Maybe give it more time.
Also try *#*#4636#*#* - Phone information - and WCDMA preferred. Make sure wifi and wifi calling disabled because it will keep it at GSM only.
Hope this helps.
I called and did the internet switch yesterday morning. As for that stat number thing, after I pressed it everything came back on. Don't know if it was coincidence or not.
Will have to check again when out happens. What early am I looking for?

I'm having the exact same problem. In my house I can get fair hspa+ 2-4 bars, 3G who nows as we don't have a 3G notification icon. Edge when it works is 4-5 bars. My wife has the Blackberry Bold also from T-Mobile and she has a solid 3G all the time.
I already changed my device once and the new one now 2 days old has the same issues. It is really starting to annoy me as many times I get ready to use the internet and I just have a signal bars with nothing to the left and internet and email are not working. This also means my email does not sync up properly when the connection is lost.
I'm going to try and spend some time in another area and see if the problem is the same. If so I might have to give up on this device, I hate to as I really like it.
Unfortunately being in different areas does not make a difference. I love this phone as well but this is very aggravating. What causes this to happen? No other htc phone I have used or friends have used have this problem.

Sorry I am having a hard time understanding what you are asking.
You go to the the dialpad on your phone. Enter *#*#4636#*#*
As soon as you do this it will bring up a menu. Tap on "Phone Information"
Then at the bottom you will see a dropdown box under "Set preferred network type:"
Set this to WCDMA preferred. Then hit the back button (the back arrow).
You will see that your signal has been disabled for a second, then will turn back on. Also if you can note down what it was set to before you changed it to WCDMA preferred and post that here.
Like I said this can only be done when wifi and wifi calling are disabled.
Hope I was a little more clear this time.
Well I may have to eat my words. It might be my location or just crappy T-Mobile service that is varying. I put my wifes phone in the same part of the house side by side of mine and trying to surf the web it dropped out too. Lost the 3G and got a SOS for signal bars. Unlike my G2 it recovered fairly quickly as the reception came back. My G2 has been at a loss for internet for over a hour before.
I'm still going to try some comparisons in some different ares and I hope it is just my area.
@bishybob wcdma prefered is checked.

Nexus One network issue

Hi, i was using CM7 for a week, then suddenly, the mobile network begin to be freaky, cant stay on a network, cant make call and anything, I already cheked the apn settings and everything..
also switched to wcdma prefferred, to gsm only, or to wcdma sometime got signal, but after 1 or 2 minutes, cant connect to a network...
anyone can help please..
I'm having this as well ever since the update.
Gingerbread is half-baked if you ask me.
it seems to make and receive calls only in EDGE (in GSM ONLY mode), but when i change it to preferred wcdma or to wcdma only to get 3G, sometime get full signal but cant make any calls and also cant use data and sometimes got no service.. only in EDGE mode..
all this happen after using CM7 for a week... anyone please help..
baseband and radio are 32.50.0032U_5.12.00.08...
I also restore it to stock to FROYO FRF33 and the same issue, dont know what cause it..
I'm not sure it is fully related to gingerbread. I'm still using CM6 and had this issue on and off for about 3 days. It seems to have cleared up for me (knock on wood)
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
yess im having the same problem, i also noticed it after flashing to either honeycomb alpha or the new gingerbread update [i did both within an hour] but i cant fix this problem...:/
still cant connect to 3G, only in EDGE mode...
cant connect to a 3G network, already changed the radio to 5.08, 5.12 and downgrade it to 4.06 and nothing...
anyone know this issue??
if I cant solve it, I might gonna sell my Nexus One..,
Network issues have nothing to do with the phone, if they're constant with different ROMs. Check with your service provider.

is not the service provider, I change the sim card to another phone, and the 3G works flawless.
Also, put another sim of other carries with the same band, changed the APN settings, and it's the same problem with 3G, only work on 2G...
In that case, 2 options:
1) Wipe and check again.
If still doesn't work -
2) Hardware failure. Use the warranty.
I've been recently (1-2 months) battling with Data problems also and I don't know what the issue is. I know it isn't my Carrier because I just spent the whole month on the phone with them and they actually sent a Guy TO MY HOUSE to test the connection. I've never had problems before until around CM7 and me switching plans (which is what I thought it was).
My problem is that it works, but data just stops and doesn't want to reconnect. I have to toggle Airplane mode or reset to jump start it. I think changing towers while driving might do this too.
I've done the same tests. Changed Sim, Swapped Sims, etc. EDGE seems to be stable for me but 3G is wonky. I've flashed a PASSIMG and started from scratch that way back to root and CM7. I've downgraded my HBoot and reupgraded it. I've wiped and changed radio versions.
Right now I plan to swap to a few other Gingerbread roms and see if that fixes it. My N1 being my only internet connection it is hard to download other custom roms but I grabbed a few from work and put on my SD card.
I'm not blaming CM7 but at this point I'm really thinking about changing phones.
Ive read that there are issues with the Nexus One gps. Is this true and if so, what issues have you experienced?
PS. GPS doesnt have anything to do with the carrier does it?
well... my nexus already have 1 year, I'll sell it in a very cheap price, and buy the INSPIRE 4G and root it...
thx for your help guys..

No 3G on Nexus S after flashing ROM

I have a Rogers/Fido/Telus Nexus S. I tried a bunch of ROM's, CM7, ASOP, NSColab, Honycomb port. And then I realized that my 3G stopped working. I'm only getting Edge. My baseband version says "NO DGSXXXKB1", in the bootloader, carrier info says ATT. Any ideas?
do I need to re-flash the GRI40 radio again?
Same problem here. Initially all was working fine, then I tried to play with 2G/3G settings in Power Widget (CM7) since then, I am only able to get Edge connection.
I reset, changed firmwares, went back to my original Nandroid backup, no help.
I was also getting the Roaming Icon indicator on Fido's network, even though I purchased the Fido branded Nexus-S...
Tried changing Radio, KB1 and KB3, still no go.
I have owned Nexus One, Desire, Desire HD, Samsung Galaxy-S and Nexus-S
Never had issues except with Samsung phones!
Anyway, relocked NAND and this phone is going back.
Same. I was ASOP and the 2G was enable by default. I changed it to 3G and never saw 3G again. I thought swapping radios would do it, apparently not. Really weird. I guess I'm returning mine as well. Hopefully Future Shop will not snoop around too much.
Do you think odin would work?

The version of the phone changed to GRI40 which if I'm not mistaken is the T-mobile one. Which would explain everything. I hope one of the devs could help us out.
APN missing?
I have the same problem guys. After flashing CM7, I can only get edge connection. Whenever I turn on 3G from the toggle, a "H" sign will appear, but no internet at all! Wtf. Hope there is a solution for this. Back on stock nexus s (slcd i9023) for now

Never hit the 2G/3G button. Its broken, been broken and doesnt work as of yet. Just dont hit it.
Had the same problem. For some reason it was on the wrong band (if that's possible). in the *#*#4636#*#*, phone information, menu, select radio-band, USA, and fixed!
Still getting no 3G/H on my CM7. I even tried the *#*#4636 method, still no go. However I can surf the browser to sites like google, facebook etc. But whenever I want to sync my google acc, I will get a network error. Wtf? One thing that I noticed is that, my signal bars won't "light up" (but I can surf the net). Another thing, after flashing to CM7, my build number changed to GRI40 instead of GRI54 in the settings on stock. Maybe that is the problem?

Put this into your dial pad: *#*#4636#*#*
Then hit Phone Information
Then hit the menu button and select radio band, the select corresponding Country.
USA will fix our issues.
I found a dirty workaround for this problem. Turn on airplane mode, then turn it off. Worked for me.
Same issue for me on the Nexus One. 3G icon is there when phone is idle. As soon as I try to do anything data-related (ie. browser) it switched to an H.
Tried setting to USA, no dice. APN is internet.com
crap I guess no root for my nexus S until this canadian carrier thing is resolved...
I thought i would throw in my experiance
I bought a Nexus S from Telus, and i am using it with a Sasktel Sim on Bell/Sasktel network (live in sask but have a national account from Bell) and on stock, i could never get H.....only the 3g would show up. But that was short lived because i flashed CM7 on it and the H now appears and works perfectly fine
So i dunno if its a Rogers frequency thing/problem, but the phone works great on HSPA on Bell/Sasktel
Cheers

T-Mobile UK / orange on CM7

Just wondering if anyone using the latest Cm7 is having problems regarding the auto network switching from T-Mobile to orange and back, using the cm suggested radio. Thanx

No problems here. Infact, with the latest radio, At home I have switched from a poor T-Mobile reception to a decent "Orange - T-Mobile" one.
What radio u using? Does go back to T-Mobile easily?

I had problems too. Had to stop phone switching and stay on orange..
All ok here (both original radio and as per my sig).
Been using it on CM7 since day one without any issues whatsoever. What exactly are problems you are having?
Regards.
When it switch to orange it takes long time to go back to T-Mobile .
I can be driving and stays on orange until I manually change back to T-Mobile. Or sometimes it need a reboot.
If stay on orange I get no data, just calling.

Have you tried selecting the Data whilst roaming option? Works for me and I get data on "both" networks.
Also, try selecting T-Mobile as the Default network (to help it go back to T-Mobile)

No problems here. I'm on T-Mobile. Sometimes flicks over to 'T-Mobile Orange', but I don't lose data. Make sure you have both 'Data roaming' and 'National data roaming' enabled (Settings>Wireless & network settings>Mobile networks).
Same here, no issues at all but you need to make sure data roaming is allowed, the transition is seamless and to be honest I rarely notice that it's even changed networks

Am on orange myself, and really come to hate the network since tmob and orange merged! Not onlyinternet, but also at times no one can call me. My phone says 3-4 bars, but orange somehow, at times, dont let anyone get thru me.
My complaints went nowhere, and waiting for my contract to finish to leave them!
Ok what i done is select manually either GSM ONLY or Orange - T-Mob. I've realised that manually selecting GSM on both instances (orange or orng-tmob) keep me 'alive' and people can call me...
Got the same issues with stock, several other custom roms/radio. For my case, its orange network that became crap (used to be perfect before, and used to enjoy a strong and steady 'H')...
try them, also call orange EACH AND EVERYTIME you experiencing issues. and also make sure they record ur complaints on their system(am goin to ask for a discount on my line later)!
all the best hope that it helps u ...

funny you should say that, my wifes iPhone on Orange has the same issue, even seems to swap to weak t-mob signal instead of full strength Orange, had to kill the auto selecting network to fix it. Now I'm on t-mobile and find the network share a boon!

[Moto G4 with Amazon ads] Always losses carrier network after 24 hours

Hello everyone,
I just bought a Moto G4 16 GB with Amazon Ads for my wife, but we are facing a very annoying problem: the carrier signal always dies after 24 hours give or take. We tested with a different SIM card and the same thing happened. When this happens the device only shows "Emergency Calls Only" and we have to reboot the phone in order to get the signal back.
So, is anyone else facing this problem? Is this really a problem with this phone in particular or every moto g4 has this problem? Should I return the device to amazon?
Thank you very much for any information you can give me!

I tested the SIM card in a different phone and it worked flawlessly (I also use T-Mobile). The strange thing is that the phone gets the signal very well during more or less one day, after that I have to reboot to get signal again.
Well, this is probably a problem in the device. I already asked Amazon to send a replacement.

Thank you, but I just use the t-mobile network. In fact, my carrier is called campusSIMs and it is a MVNO that uses t-mobile network. So, my APN configs are a bit different from yours.
However, I didn't know about this mobile data thing. I didn't touch the developer options. Maybe, it can be a good idea.
Thank you!
It won't be your APN settings since that controls your data settings. If the sim is ok then it could be your phone.

I'm seeing a similar problem with the data portion of the network (also on T-Mobile). While I'm able to send and receive calls and texts, data doesn't work. There's no indication that it's attached to LTE or even 3G (just a standard signal bar with no other information). I moved the SIM card back to the old phone it was in and it works fine.
Things actually worked yesterday, so something happened overnight to break it.

That could possible be the APN settings. Although usually it's the opposite, they don't work at first then they update from the network later on. Most times the APN settings will set themselves but on the odd occasion they need to manually edited. I don't use T-Mobile but the APN settings are easy enough to find.

Sounds like you need to manually enter the APN settings. What you describe is exactly what happens when it hasn't loaded an APN.
I'm "kinda" having an issue here. It's a little different though; the phone works ok for a while (for me about 3 hours, usually), and then I still get an LTE indicator, but have no network connection (get errors in apps/"No internet" page in chrome).
Other times, I lose LTE and get locked in 3g (H indicator), and can only get LTE back by going to Settings/More/Cellular Networks/ and toggle preferred network mode to 2g or 3g, let it connect (H or E), then toggle back to LTE.
Motorola responded to a bad Amazon review requesting I post asking for help on their forums.

I'm active over on their forums also and it's good to post over there in case you ever want to do a soak test. They look at your posts there when they ask for soak testers. As for your problem, I've seen it shift back and forth if you are in an area between towers and one isn't sending out LTE. If it were that I wouldn't think you'd get it back so easily. There's an app, don't remember the name, that will show the towers and signal relative to your location, If might be interesting to look at that.
Having the same issue with radio. Just replied to your post, Kalash.
Ok, we got a new phone from Amazon and it has the same problem. So, I believe this phone does not work very well with MVNOs.
I notice that the problem is that the phone cannot reconnect to the network after losing the signal. For example, if you go to an area with bad signal and, eventually the signal vanishes, the phone will not be able to reconnect to the carrier network. The phone only reconnects after reboot. Airplane mode does not solve the problem.
This does not happen with my Blu Life One X. So, I think it is a software problem.

That's not true on all mvnos' apparently. My wife's phone is on Consumer Cellular, an AT&T mvno and it's never done that. We've been in a no service area several times and it's always connected immediately when getting service back.
