Tethering since GB - Droid X General

So I upgraded to ZapX Ginger 4.1 and I attempted to try my tether app. It did turn on only after telling me i had the incorrect kernel to work. I never really tested it out, or attempted to connect to my phone via a laptop or other device. I just turned it on then back off right away. After turning off the tether I attempted to surf the web only to find that verizon was auto forwarding me to a website that would force me to sign up for a broadband tether package for my phone. It would not let me get to any website without agreeing to the terms and subscribing.
I then called verizon CS and they had no idea what was going on so they took my swap some thing in my acct and I was able to surf the web again. Not sure if anyone else has had this issue.. I did some probing online but didnt spend too much time on it.But it obviously looks like verizon has already begun tracking of tether (with rooted apps).
I just wanted to see if anyone else has tethered recently and/or if anyone else had a similar issue.

Same thing just happened to me

nvram patch, GB flaw and a crazy conjecture
Okay, I have a wild conjecture which I partially verified.
So the nvram patch works because it modifies certain fields in the nvram that is used to build the MIP profile at boot. In particular, they figured out the locations in the nvram which are used to build the NAI string. In a regular data session (non -DUN) the string is [email protected] and during DUN it is [email protected]. So they modified the location that contained these partial strings and took out "dun" from these locations. so if you used the 3g hotspot app, it would appear as if you were using an internal phone data session. This all worked fine in froyo.
Fast forward to GB leak The flaw, I think, is that once you establish a DUN session and even after you disconnect it, somehow the software continues to use the NAI string from the DUN session. So if you have an unpatched nvram, and tried to tether, you would be taken to vzw's mobile hotspot page. ok, now if you disconnect, your data doesn't work(if you are not mobile broadband paid user), because the sw still thinks you are in a DUN sesson. But if you have applied the patch, it doesn't matter, since the NAI string in both cases is [email protected]. I verified this. Another indicator is the color of the 3g text in the notification bar. In non DUN data session it is blue. When you try to use a DUN session, it turns black and it stays that way till you reboot the phone.
Finally, why I think P3 is pushing a new baseband module. Applying this will rewrite the NVRAM. I believe this NVRAM has switched the location of where the strings are stored and so the nvram patch will no longer work.... This could be proven if someone could extract the nvram file and look at it in a hex editor.
pretty wild, i know.....comments , disagreements very welcome

To be honest, I think your absolutely right. Especially since the auto forwarding takes you to a DUN vzw page.. my only question is where do I get my hands on this patch you spoke of.

EVDO PPP Connection Error

I upgraded to the new DCD Beta 2.0 and when I try to connect to the mobile internet I get an error stating it cannot connect for an unknown reason. It also states Error Code: 11 - PPP Connection Error.
I am on Verizon and dialing #777, this still happens when I manually enter my username (ph#@vzw3g.com) and vzw password. I've tried a hard reset, but still the same issue.
Any ideas or does it look like a call to Verizon?
Ok, So I called Verizon and talked to the for a long time. They think it's a bad phone and I should try and get a warranty replacement.
I'm pretty sure there has to be a setting in the rom that I can change from when I originally had the Sprint ROM on there.
Any ideas?
I have Verizon also. I pay as you go so I normally do not connect with the data connection. So I put in your settings and had no problem connecting or surfing the web. I am also running the new rom. Hope this helps.
I think my main problem is that I installed the Sprint 3.16 "unofficial" rom onto my phone. When I went back to the Verizon rom I had to manually load a PRL to get back on the Verizon towers. Now I need to figure out what else to change to get Data Back.
Data/MMS OTA download resolved
Good news I got it fixed. I had to call Verizon. It's a problem on their network, something to do with the way the account is provisioned. This is an issue that shows up for folks that don't have an unlimited data plan and are only setup for pay as you go. I wish I could give you more detail about what to say but as usual with tech support it depends on who you talk to. I would just keep calling back until I got to the right person.
Data Connection Resolved
I also had a similar problem on the VZW network. Tried many setting changes last weekend to no avail, I needed to get a new A-key so I downgraded to 1.6.10 because of the 3.27 radio issues. The Data connection still didn't work, so I called and got a new A-key, then once that was working, chased the Data connection with a different tech support group, they tried the usual resets and programming. Finally, the tech guy exhausted his list and pushed the problem to network support, an hour or so later the data connection was working again. Network support called later to check to see if my problem was resolved, which it was. He said they had to reset the local switch, something about a hung data session.
I've on Sprint, and I've been having problems getting my data working again with the new 3.16 ROM. I called tech support, and after verifying all the settings, they looked for outage reports.. and found a global Sprint vision provisioning issue currently logged. We'll see if things improve in a few hours..

Rom Update --> Data Call Failure Error

I have the xv6800 and I'm on Verizon. I just updated my rom to 3.57.605.1 from Verizon's website.
After *228 I was able to make calls, but now I have this persistent error:
Data Call Failure
Error Code: 11
PPP Connection Error
I do not have a data plan and dont want one. I only use wi-fi. This popup is annoying.
Can somebody tell me how to kill it, or how to fix whatever is wrong? What on my phone is trying to use the data connection so I can disable it?
Verizon tech support was useless.
holy cow, go this too! what is this about?
Just flashed my new xv6900 today. everything is working, i believe...but keep getting this ppp error.
Any resolution on your end?
Nothing. I imagine we're some of the first people to go through this.
A week or two ago, Verizon issued a statement saying all new customers with pda phones as of November (not sure exact day) will be REQUIRED to purchase a data plan.
I think the *228 process is now going to verify a data plan on pda phones and since I dont have one, I'm stuck with the error. Either that or my phone cannot properly "handshake" with Verizon since I dont have the plan.
I was on the phone with support for 2 hours last night. They're useless. We even tried giving me a data plan long enough to let the phone sync with the server, but this morning I got the error again.
I'm sure someone can find a registry edit to get rid of the message. I think that would be enough for me. My only concern, is if my phone is persistently trying to establish that data call, it'll eat my already-weak battery up in no time.
That is why I'd prefer a solution to disable the whole thing. I'm still waiting on the kind people here at XDA. These guys know more about Vz's phones than they do.
In "connections" I deleted the Verizon data network connection, but it comes right back. I wonder if that was not there before the rom update and maybe that is what's trying to call out?
I had such good luck cook'n my 6700 but this 6900 is not so fun.
My message has gone away after about 10 minutes after the programming. even knowing i could do txtmsg and call on my phone i could not get into voicemail, it stated i could not be verifed...so I think it just needed some more time. i'm keeping my fingers crossed.
but now I have to flash again...more problems.
FYI: i do have a dataplan...
I was right about the battery problems at least.
My phone finished charging at 3:00 pm and sat on my desk (no calls or use) until 8:00 pm when I got an emergency low battery notification.
Whatever my phone is doing is blowing through battery life.
Sounds like normal life for a wm phone with the data turned on!
Must be looking and burning power just like roam does.
DMU RESET
According to the Verizon 3rd tier people I was speaking with last night they simply need to do a DMU reset on your account and phone. This is where they rebuild the account on their servers but first level tech support will never be allowed to help you here. This was done for me after the *228, *22899, *832, and many many other attempts at reconnecting my phone.
Hope this helps.
Thanks for letting me know! I was starting to think I wasnt going to get any help. I'm calling Vz tomorrow.
I called Vz tonight and they said there was no such thing as 3rd tier support.
He said DMU would only help if I had a data plan and I wanted to re-establish my data plan. I want to permanently disable my data entirely. Were you doing the same thing?
Either way they couldnt help me. If your issue was the same as mine, let me know and I'll call back and push them harder.

"Once gone from there, I deleted the connections under settings/connections/connections/mange existing connections and they've never reappeared since. So now I just create a new connection when I need it, and delete it when I'm done. It keeps me from going over my limit ($25 data plan). "
Deleted the connection and the issue is gone. FYI
This is my first contribution to xda-forums! I'm glad I can help at all when I've benefitted so much... Thanks to all!
NOTE: After the following steps, Modaco's Nodata doesn't even register that a data connection exists! For this reason, if you occasionally use 3g, you probably will want to use Nodata, and NOT the following solution. You just might have to open Nodata and disable the data connection every time you soft-reset.
I was finally able to completely 100% block the 3g data connection on my Verizon XV6800 (aka Mogul aka Titan) was the following three steps:
1. The key culprit is HTC_CM_Guardian.exe in the windows directory. I couldn't edit it or delete it via Total Commander file explorer, but I was able to rename it! This makes the OS unable to find the program when it tries to re-set the Data connection settings.
2. Under Settings > Connections > Connections > Advanced > "Select which networks are automatically used," hit "Select Networks."
3. Under "Programs that automatically connect to the Internet should connect using:" hit "New...".
4. Enter any name you want (mine's "nodata!") and leave all the other settings blank.
5. Save and exit! Voila!
Wifi--yes; 3g--no!
Modaco's Nodata program is awesome, but the problem was that HTC_CM_Guardian.exe re-enabled the data connection every time I reset the phone. Plus, HTC_CM_Guardian.exe would also thwart any effort to block data via the "Connection Settings." By renaming HTC_CM_Guardian.exe and creating a "nodata!" connection that programs auto-connecting to the internet would try to use (and fail), we get three results:
1. Modaco's Nodata doesn't even register that a data connection exists! For this reason, if you occasionally use 3g, you probably won't to use this solution.
2. When you reboot, the OS is unable to mess-up your "Connection Settings", so
3. Unless you have an active wifi connection, programs will try to connect to the Internet using the "nodata!" settings, which, being empty, will fail, exactly as planned.
Hope it helps.

Downgraded to RC29, lost internet - Cant' get past sign up.

I was running JF's 1.51 but needed to downgrade to RC29. Now that I've done so I can't get internet and therefore can't get past the sign up stage.
I've searched the forums THOROUGHLY and can't find a solution. Please don't delete my post.
I realize there's a post detailing how to skip this sign in step. Because I can't change the settings of my phone it wont work for me. I need to know if anyone has run into this problem and what are some possible causes. My APN settings are correct. I even have the EDGE network internet icon on the phone, and it looks like there is some activity, but I cannot connect to Google servers.
PLEASE help, I'm kind of new to this and maybe jumped in too quickly, but the first time I followed this process I didn't have any problems at all. I've tried changing the ROM and using different bootloaders, nothing will get past the authentication.
I'm no expert, but just a question. Does it matter if hes using an newer radio on an older build?
When I sometimes flash a ROM and can't get internet access I just turn on/off my phone a time or two and eventually I get internet back.
Actually this is fixed. It was simple and embarrassing.
After doing a lot of reading I found a post on another site with a tmob rep. He was talking about how if you have a shared text plan, sometimes there are issues with the data plan provision dropping off of the sim card because the subscriber will have a shared text plan and also text messages as part of their data package. T-mobile systems see this as redundant and drop a feature.
I've had the same data plan for almost 2 years, it's the same data plan I was using when I first got the g1 - sometimes their systems don't pick it up for awhile apparently - but when they do you can no longer use that internet gateway. Coincidentally, this happened to me just as I was downgrading my g1.
Sorry for the needless post. Thanks to everyone who contributes to the site with guides, they have always been very helpful to me.
Sometimes it's the simplest thing...

new and easier tether that shouldnt change your plan

ive been bored and needed internet so i ive been trying the old stuff you know bARNAcle wifi tether and wifi tether and i found i wifi tether that works so far its this one v3_0-pre10 this wifi tether seems to work just google wifi tether it should be one of the first results just thot id post since people have been having there plans automatically changed to the tethering plan with the method some have figured out but im using the wifi tether to make this post and you need root by the way and allowing sideloading of apps thot id post and have a nice day

Wow...that's one long sentence.
this is the best speeds i could get with this nothing compared to my captivate i had but you know what blame att for that one owell just trying to help out the community

Can anyone confirm they have had their accounts changed without their permission? And if so what plans did you originally have? I don't see how att can see the difference. When I look at my usage, it looks just like the usage as when I am browsing on my phone.

AT&T has changed some people's data plan automatically?
from what i understand thats when people have been trying to use the hotspot that came with the phone by changing the apn and running with it this is differint its an app that is seperate from that to my knowledge someone correct me if im wrong
Did you assume that the APN method changes the plan or did you actually see someone say that their plan was changed as a result of that method?
You seriously need to learn how to use punctuation and grammar. I had to read your last post a few times before I could clearly understand what you were trying to say.
I have been using the APN since Tuesday, very heavily, I have Unlimited Data plan. No changes to my account.
I also have been using the WIFI hotspot for hours at a time with the unlimited plan and checking my account online shows no changes to date.
"I don't see how att can see the difference."
My IP is a bit rusty but I *think* any packets (any data) that are being routed through your phone to some other final destination (a tethered computer) will show the IP address of that final destination, rather than the IP address of the phone. And the phone will be shown as a part of the route.
So...it could be as simple as examining the packets and looking for the ones that aren't targeted to end at the phone. If someone bothers to look for it.
If the tethering uses NAT (which I'd imagine it does, though I didn't verify that) you wouldn't be able to tell the difference IP-wise between the phone and the host using the computer.
If you go on-line to your ATT account and check under current data usage, you will find that under data usage it will state in the TO/FROM column "phone" with non-tethered usage and when tethered it states "wap.cingular." It looks like a pretty big marker but so far, no changes have been made to my plan.
Sure here is a similar mod that used to work for verizon - verizon quickly fixed it
http://it-john.com/home/technology/android-technology/free-tethering-for-htc-indredible-on-verizon/
Since you are using login information, they can simply check your phone info and when they see you logging in with WAP credentials yadda yadda
Anyway - mine changed twice - on 2 phones - but i viewed my account data using the myAT&T app. http://market.android.com/details?id=com.att.myWireless
Just my experience.

That's interesting. I wonder if that's something new they changed. I swear when I looked a few days ago that all my usage was shown as wap.Cingular. when I look back before I got the attic all my blackberry phone browsing was shown as wap.Cingular also.

I just wish they'd stop charging for tethering. It doesn't make any sense to me. Yes, having your phone tethered to a laptop or the like means you could potentially use a LOT more of the bandwidth a lot faster and for a lot longer.... but if you have a limited plan, then you're only paying more for your plan a lot faster. That's the only reason i can see that they DID ditch the unlimited plans as a selectable option for people who haven't had it before. Little bit more incentive to go for a tethering plan.... to pay to use your bandwidth quicker.
Was actually just comparing all the apn's on my phone and noticed something.
the default select APN has the apn settings as "phone". So I went to the APN that we created for tethering and changed the apn setting from "wap.cingular" to "phone".
Saved the setting, checked connection, and then fired up tethering. Still seems to work as I am tethering to my laptop right now making this post. I will watch my online usage then next few days to see if it shows it as "phone" or as "wap.cingular". Pretty sure it will change to all showing "phone", so we might want to change the directions if this holds up and works.
Just something else to help hide what we are doing.
Nice find!

I have both "phone" and "wap.cingular" data usage in my history, but I haven't done any tethering or added any APNs. Could that be because I was on Edge at the time? The APN for wap.cingular is labeled as AT&T US while the APN for phone is AT&T US HSDPA.
And just to clarify, when you are tethering using the added APN are you just using the stock mobile hotspot app?
Yes, using the stock hotspots app. I don't think you can use any market ones unless you have the phone rooted.

ROM completely hacked and stealthed from unknown source. Need advice

Couldn't believe it myself but after factory resetting and doing some digging around its come to my attention that my ATT variant S7 seems to have been totally hijacked, as deep as the bootloader itself. I have quite a few recovery logs that display all my system apps being patched at root level. There's a bunch of suspicious background services and after checking with a interface app there seems to be a couple rmnet network connections running in the background pointing to multiple unknown IP assesses. To further support my find out entire network at my office has been completely overrun with an undetectable malware, more so just a complete redirection of our DNS with multiple computers including mine specifically tied into a virtual backdoor tunnel. My PC hasn't been detected by our remote anti virus agent since September along with many policies setup to stealth the negotiating hosts and clients. Anyways for my phone specifically has anyone ever been hit like this? I'm gonna go to ATT later today and have them replace my device with a new one and keep it off network. Here's my phones status and baseband info.
Trying to get a copy of the recovery logs for someone to verify. I went to att and they said there's nothing they can do to check it on there end... guys I'm not joking around here and if everything appears fine can someone tell me or is the s7 a dead stick now and nobody cares?
Nothing's wrong with the phone. All of those connections are normal.
Rest assured, your life is not that important that hackers would personally invade your phone, out of all the things.
That being said, here's why your phone is normal:
- latest security patch available for your service provider ? CHECK.
- stock firmware ? CHECK
- Official device status ? CHECK.
- sit0 network ? PERFECTLY FINE. sit = Simple Internet Transition. AKA 6to4. That's a tunneling protocol for using IPv6 over an existing IPv4 connection. The S7 is capable of using both protocols. In fact, you have both types of connections enabled in your settings.
- rmnet_data ? PERFECTLY FINE. rmnet interfaces are usually associated with cellular connections and usb tethering. In all of your SS, mobile data and some sort of tethering app were enabled.
Case closed, drops the mic.

Thank You! I shall take my walk of shame now, but thank you for taking the time to explain.
You're not wrong. I bet you've been hacked and that's just like I've been hacked.
Guys, everybody's hacked. The gov'ment wants to watch all of us like a soap opera. Carriers can't watch you if you don't have bloat running lineage, and it's a bit harder for the gov'ment to watch without stock firmware.
Don't forget the tin foil hats, and wrap the phones while at it
