Buyer`s remorse, post here!! - Xoom General

Stop complaining about buying an incomplete device in other sections and post them here. Getting tired of unhelpful info being thrown around on XDA.
Edit
I love my xoom and would never return it, just getting tired of stupid post and tools with no experience lol.

My only remorse is that I didn't buy it on the first day of release.

I am still on the fence. Just got mine a couple of days ago. I have had a handful of problems with apps FC'ing. What I think is really dumb is the case that Staples sells puts the power plug on the bottom so you cant use the Xoom propped up and have it plugged in at the same time.
I am also not convinced yet that I am a good candidate for a tablet. I create a lot of content but don't consume a lot of content. I still have to grab my laptop to do photo editing, faster text editing, video chatting (other than the GTalk app). I don't think a lot of my issues are specific to the Xoom or more Android 3.0 compatibility issues.
I think the vast majority of problems will be sorted out soon but I am not sure I need to pay full price to be an early adopter yet.

Yes, but then the holes for the camera arent in the right place, plus the case is just weak, doesnt hold well and the Xoom slides down and turns the volume down. The case is just a bad design.

Love mine, don't plan on selling it anytime soon. And once Honeycomb matures, this thing will be a beast!

I'm about to return my xoom, primarily because the touchscreen stopped responding. Which is a gigantic problem on a buttonless device!!!!!!!!!
I think I am going to go for my money back, and possibly buy the 16gb version when it comes out to save a few bucks.
I am tempted to get an iPad2, which makes me feel like an asshole but all the good apps are on there now. However I am learning java and will hopefully have time to write some apps soon, thereby making an empty app store more of a positive than negative.
Before anyone flames me for thinking of getting an ipad, its just cause I feel like its the one form factor device where I might not care as much if its locked down (of course I will jailbreak it on day one if I get it, and will be dual-booting android on it sometime after the ASOP comes out, google...)
If all I want to do with this device is read/watch/consume content, and ipad has all the content right now, it kinda makes sense. And I am confident the ipad2 could be an awesome honeycomb device. With the amount of sales it has had there should be enough interest in that as a project. Enough to give the google all the more reason to hold off on releasing the source code. Dammit..

Nobody will flame you. Its personal preference. Some ppl like changing devices to fit there pref and some choose to use their device as just consuming data. Don't worry. This device will eventually run stable. We just have to wait.

Do you know me? What should you care if I flame you? The only time I would care if you buy an I pad would be if you bought it with MY money.

I don't know if I got a better xoom than most if the people here but I am freaking loving this thing. The screen is beautiful, the white's are actually white, something I have not seen on anything except the Apple devices. I get no lag whatsoever on my home screens after oc'ing to 1.5 governor set at interactive, and the stereo speakers are really nice. I absolutely love this thing. I got a sweet car dock from a dealer in the UK so I can use it as a bad ass head unit in my car, and when its hooked up to my system with great speakers and 2 12's in the trunk it sounds as good or better than my gf's iPhone 5, something I have never found with any other android device, even my inspire with srs sound. Yes, it has some bugs but for what I need it to do it does it wonderful. I am using it as a complete laptop replacement. I am actually thinking of selling my macbook pro. And I think we are not gonna get many people posting here about their gripes with the device because...
1. They want to start their own post for attention/tolling
2. They don't use the search button
3. There is far to much effort for them to actually read through a forum for the appropriate place to post

LMAO, i hate me some trolls, im made this post hoping it would attract them all but i guess i was wrong lol. stupid people. guess they never used a forum before.

I regret buying the Xoom because I should have waited for a tablet that is thinner, lighter, better screen, working micro sd slot, working 4G and has a pen input, a nornal micro usb that is rechargeable, and most importantly can play high profile .mkv 1080p without needing to do any conversion.
How come no company can do it right?
My biggest question is:
How come no European country make any tablets?
If Germany and Italy can create Mercedes, BMW, Farrari and Lamborghini, they can certainly make a measly sub $1,000 tech device.

keep on waiting. wait on, while we enjoy out Xoom. the best thing invented since the internet. Xoom, Xoom, Xoom...

May I offer these words of encouragement to anyone who has bought a Xoom but who hasn't been involved with Android and modded ROMS before?
The out of the box is not overly impressive when compared, as it inevitaly will be, with the iPad. It is disconcerting to have Forced Closes on a device costing what it does as regularly as one does. And there is not much eye-candy included either.
However, the hardware specs are so good that I have little doubt that the Xoom will be the equivalent of the HTC HD2 (which if you don't know started as a Windows Mobile 6 phone, got Froyo and then Gingerbread and now dual boots into Android or Windows Phone 7!) once the developers get their hands on the source code.
Hang onto your Xoom and you will see in the weeks to come that it will get better and better and, instead of having a gadget which is all shiny and cool for the first week and then becomes old news, you will have a gadget that keeps improving as each new ROM is released.

Are there really that many of you out there happy with your Xoom purchase? I am an Android fanatic through and through but I can't even get the most basic built in widgets to launch, I am already 3 minutes deep into typing this because buttons on the keyboard randomly stop registering at all. I have no idea what Honeycomb is even like as everything I try to open FC's before it even launches. I am literally in awe of how big of a piece of **** this thing is. Less than 24 hours and this thing is going back to best buy. **** my galaxy tab ran froyo flawless and I am now really bummed I sold it to get this worthless pos. I hate apple with every inch of my being but I know the ipad will function exactly how it is supposed to our of the box instead of this less than half baked **** I am attempting to use now.

I've had my Xoom since Wednesday and I'm 100% happy. I have experienced only a few FC's. The only widget I have found that doesn't work is Facebook. The only time I have experienced keyboard lag is in the browser.
Have you tried a factory reset? Maybe that will clear things up?
Do yourself a favor and return it for another one because something is wrong with the one you got. The xoom is my first android device and i'm amazed. Everything runs great. The odd time it will take a few minutes for my CNN and accuweather widget to load. Get another so you can give it a real chance. That's all I'm try'n to say

I love mine. Only reason I hate it is because it has taken over my life. On the facebook widge thing. Really? You expect an app widget foe a phone to run one day one. And that is really the only one I have had problems with. The update will come. Do us all a favor return your xoom.

It's amazing to me that people knowingly assume the role of early adoptor, and don't expect issues. It's part of the process. You can gather from these boards what the general experience is: a pleasant work in progress that needs some apps and a little polish. If your experience is wildly different, it's either a faulty Xoom or you shouldn't buy the flagship device for a very new OS. You also might not know how to get the most out of this thing.
Nobody makes an issue out of the Facebook widget because.... it's a Facebook widget. If you that falls into "things you can't live without it until 3.01", then take the Xoom back.

the price of the device has nothing to do with whether a third party widget designed for a phone should work or not. if this is your only problem, i'd say the xoom's a winner.
To the OP, my biggest problems are FC's of the browser. It used to crash every 5 minutes. I rebooted, and for me, that solved the problem. knock on wood, but no FC of the browser in a day.

I think some people expect way to much. Everyone on this forum should know the meaning of "early adopter" (**** look at the nexus on and still that is the best phone I have ever owned). Not just that but all I hear is a bunch of *****ing and moaning over the Xoom. It either costs too much or some other whining. I love it and I can't put it down and compared to the hundreds if reviews I read I figured that hneycomb was horrible but it is actually running pretty well on mine. I mean I get the occasional force close but god its a .0 release and its the first of its class. If a widget doesn't work blame Facebook (or any other 3rd party developer) if anyone thinks the samsung 10.1 will be better theyre in for a rude awakening.

I addressed you in another thread but would like to use this thread since you started it to gather data. Would you kindly provide a list of the apps/widgets that FC when you try to use them? I would like to install one or two here and see if the same results happen. The next step of that process is to contact those developers and ask them if they would be willing to update their software to support the 3.0 Framework.
Agreed, I love my Xoom. It does everything I need it to do and then some. I travel frequently and just the fact that I no longer have to use my laptop while sitting in airports or coffee shops justifies my purchase. I think many people came in with expectations that were waaay too high for this class of device. Excellent battery life, email and web browsing on the go plus all of my ebooks in one place for easy access are all that I asked for. Video could be better but not as bad as ppl are making it out to be. Could Gingerbread and the Xoom both be better? Absolutely, but neither is bad by any stretch of the imagination. I think alot of people were expecting netbook power and functionality in tablet form, but you certainly don't get that with any of the other competing tablets out there so why hold the Xoom to such a high standard? I'll be keeping mine until the quad core processors are out and we see a major jump in screen resolution, but for now, I'm completely satisfied with my purchase. I think the Xoom is amazing considering it has the processing power of full size laptops out only a few short years ago...

well put sir
@theahlenius I was waiting for someone to say something along these lines. It is fair to say that for the average consumer this device is not fully ready to be put out. The norm is to only put a device on the market after it is fully ready to be released, welcome to the world of beta (the device is further than beta but still just like beta there can be quirks with a new os and lack of app support.) But I do have a few things that I want to say, 1) it was known that there was going to be things not working, ie the sdcard, flash, and that 4g was upgradeable( the lte network is still new they are still running tests on the thing with real world traffic use, give it time. you realize the crap that could go wrong releaseing a device like this on to a new network without testing its capabilities first *shivers*). Then there are people complaining about apps not working, ITS A NEW OS, The sdk that enables dev's to optimize their apps for tablets hasn't been out that long. Again it takes time, and the dev's haven't had time to make changes and fix any issues. I as well am getting the issue with the facebook app, thats about the only one, its expected though as it was built on 2.2 sdk and not 3.0 or 2.3.3. Guys really if you dont expect issues being a early release adopter return your Xoom and go get a controlled experience where Apple will hold your hand iPad.
I love my Xoom & I take it with me everywhere so I can show it off too & people are in awe of it...I know no tablet that can compare to it.too my dell streak 7 back & got this & so glad I did. This thing just works with no lags!! My ipod collects a lot of dust too now.

the xoom isn't perfect but yes we are early adopters. just like the nexus one and now the nexus s when they first came out, there are sure to be problems.
be patient, keep up to date on these forums, and the fixes and patches should roll out via google/moto or here on xda.
aside from all the problems that my xoom is having (random force closes, lag here and there), i'm enjoying this device. just rooted it and not sure if i want to take the plunge in to overclocking. don't feel as safe in doing it vs. my nexus s and dell streak since i dished out a crapload of money on it lol.

Not sure im liking this Xoom

Trying hard to get used to the 16x9. Also, the weight of it at times I really notice after holding it in bed for a decent amount of time. Also the fact I did not get a data plan and it cost me $853. When I know a wifi only version is coming out that will be quite a bit cheaper. Honeycomb is taking some time to get used to. There aren't many apps for it, so I find myself getting bored. All i seem to be doing with it is web and facebook stuff. I think may return for ipad 2.

Of course it's gonna take some getting used to its a new OS. Obviously there aren't gonna be many apps, as it just came out a week ago.
Sitting here looking at an iPad, a Samsung Galaxy Tab and the Xoom.
Xoom is a bit too bulky. Love the screen size. Waiting for some more apps (I know it just came out, but there are apps on the Galaxy Tab that I want on the Xoom).
Not sure the Xoom is hanging around.
mine is going back for sure
then take it back. What makes people think that we care if you choose so and so over something else. You know what you want so get it. Xoom isn't cutting for you then get something you wwill be happy with. No nneed to share with everyone.
I hope HTC makes a large Honeycomb tablet. I completely ignored them after the release of the HTC Flyer because I didn't appreciate the screen size, and it didn't run Honeycomb. However it was beautiful, and even had a unibody design. The Flyer was definitely a nicely designed tablet, and I do want to see what HTC does with a larger device.
They seem to be the only company that creates Android products (well, Motorola too) that focuses heavily on build quality and design. I assume if they made a larger Honeycomb tablet it would actually look up-to-par with an iPad. The silver Xoom somewhat does. This post is somewhat entirely irrelevant =/
the Xoom is supposed to be a media powerhouse. Which is why the screen is so big. It is a bit heavy, but it hasn't botherd me that much in this last week.
My girlfriend said if I return mine I can go to sunfest in florida next month. Sunfest is going to be awesome with lots of big names including sublime with Rome and ziggy marley. I am 1200 miles away from west palm beach where it will be held. I want to go so bad.
I am not returning my Xoom.
For anyone complaining about it I can see your reasons. I really can. But these were all issues I knew before spending 800$ on it. I knew these issues because I spent lots of Time thinking about it and evaluating my options before I payed almost 900 for it.
If you did not do this you are a fool for spending that amount of money without allowing your brain to process information beforehand.
Someone remind me how many apps were on ios when the iPhone launched please.
Already returned mine. It is a nice product its just not ready for the market. The price is ridiculous for what it offers.
Great, since you are both getting rid of your Xooms you can go to a different XDA forum now. Yay.
Is there any reason why this couldn't have gone into the other threads like this? I don't know why the 6 (yes, random number) people with the same nit-picky issues can't hold each other's hand through the return process in the same thread. It's not even buyer's remorse. It's not being able to put your finger on what you want upfront, and faulting the thing you bought for being the way it's clearly advertised.

They have to let everyone know they are returning it.
HEY GUYS I DON'T LIKE THE XOOM, I AM RETURNING IT OKAY. I'LL COME BACK EVERY NOW AND THEN TO TELL YOU WHY I TOOK IT BACK.
I think these types of threads are stupid.
Anyone who would return their Xoom because someone else doesn't like is an idiot. Now if you are trying to get more information because maybe you don't understand how a the platform works that is different.
So if you want us to help you understand how Honeycomb and the Moto Xoom work that's great. On the other hand if you just don't like it no one really cares. The only person I need to like my Xoom is me and maybe my girlfriend.
Complaining about how people post their complaints won't do any good. They will post it regardless... you might as well ignore it and move on. If I actually had a Xoom and didn't like it, I would sure as hell post in a thread (maybe not a new one) exactly why I don't like it.
All that I'm afraid of is that the Honeycomb OS itself will never make it past the "nice-try" stage. I love the Xoom so far but it IS a risky business right now. I am convinced that other HC tablets will push the demand for apps and updated software but can "we" win the fight? The only time I would be sorry to have purchased the Xoom is when support for it stops and it becomes an orphan. Other than that - still have to break the news to my wifey

Ok. That information would be useful if:
- Your Xoom was suffering from a defect of design (iPhone 4 antenna) that is probably shared with other Xooms.
- If in your research of how the product was understood to work, you found something nobody else had, or were commenting about an issue to help bring about a consensus.
- If there was some way of showing whether or not you were a knee-jerk purchaser, or someone that bothered to take 2 minutes and Google the Xoom before you bought it. This point has been exhausted, but buying a first generation device with an OS whose official innards weren't released to the overwhelming majority of developers even two weeks ago isn't for everyone. It's your own responsibility to research a product. The Xoom is exactly what Motorola said it was, and every issue everyone has ever posted other than nuances to the software was a click away from before the thing was even released. If someone wants to make threads about how stupid they were for spending hundreds and hundreds of dollars on something before checking it out, I'll thumbs up those all day.
TLDR - Some of the Xoom's features were advertised as "released in the coming weeks" before the product's release. This is not news, or worth sharing as a reason for your return to the store.
Edit: Just thought of something. The video playback is annoying and was kind of a surprise. I'll totally give you that one. But with some playing around and effort I'm really satisfied with the quality.
returning it for ipad 2 .

Being the first Honeycomb Tablet - Xoom - Worth the rush

I used to be with a lot of critics largely on why Moto has to rush such a potentially great product to the market just almost for the sake of being the "first honeycomb tablet", even with "Honeycomb" is not at that time a well tested or used OS.
And now I think I got it. Despite of all these good/bad issues around Xoom, I think this move from Moto is pretty good move.
The advantage of being in the market available earlier than the rest of the pack did make a difference. Just judging from
1. the Dev's attention (Kernels coming and 44 threads in xda dev section even before Honeycomb source code is published). Look, the Dev community are group of Tech enthusiasts who are mostly early adopters. This product carried the new OS to the market, this fact alone will draw strong attention and millions apps developer, who sees Android as future OS of the tablet market , want to get it as soon as possible so that their apps will come out much earlier to the market.
2. Peripheral accessories' manufacturers' attention: If you search in Amazon or online, many case / screen protector / charger/ dock / speaker manufacturer already use Xoom to represent almost entire 10.1 inch tablet market. They did not include "Transformer" in their product name (no offense, but really to my best knowledge, nor A500)
3. Average consumers they can't remember and tell the differences of all those specs, but they only know one name: Xoom. Anecdotally, my manager, who spends life in Finance industry and has not much idea of what is different between Ram and Harddisk etc, asked my the VERY CORRECT question" Is that a Xoom?" God bless him he did not ask "is that an iPad". ^^
This is not statistical proof but rather anecdotal ones, my friends around now all know that Xoom is a contender to iPad and LOOKS COOL &FEELS SOLID.
I guess if a Tablet is drawn in the waves of tablets launching events, the tablet can't really be remembered then. Evidence being almost bestbuy staff can't tell Acer or ASUS (by the way, this two pronounce too similar to each other)
So much for my saturday night chitchat.
Xoom is a solid piece of product with both Moto's hardware and Dev's contribution =)
It was worth it to rush to be the first Honeycomb Tablet, I think.

I was pretty skeptical about this purchase but this little thing is growing on me the more I use it
I was torn between this and an actual computer but Im realizing how VERY much I use my phone.. this tab does everything my evo does and does almost all of it better. Much better.
edit- some have criticized the power button placement, I really like it. It is unique and convenient.
And the wave is starting to grow and gain momentum quietly reaching #1 bestseller and #2 Top rated tablet on Amazon - http://www.topcomputertablets.com/m...nd-2-top-rated-tablet-ranks-on-amazon/224151/

Ditto, I almost sent mine back. God knows why but it seems to have a 'breaking in period', it was uber slow and crappy, FCs here there and eveywhere when first got it. But now it's settled down, albeit still stock, for now, I absolutely love it. :-D

I was also skeptical after the first week but I'm loving my Xoom. It sits well between my notebooks and my EVO, but I find it displaces my EVO usage more than my notebook. Just like when I picked up the HTC Hero when it launched, there are issues but nothing breaking.

I believe the Xoom will have the same impact as the original Droid. People swear by the OD and my son uses mine to this day. I asked him if he wanted a new Droid X he said he wanted something sexy looking like the OD. Go figure!
Yeah I was skeptical too, my friend said I would regret it. I haven't, I know I can trust in Google at least to make the software stable. As for some of the hardware issues or problems ( HDMI, bluetooth, etc.) I don't mind it too much, I am getting a micro HDMI cable and I would probably never use it too much, I don't use a keyboard or a mouse ( that would ruin the point of this being touch screen). Still being one of the few with a Honeycomb tablet is exciting, you get to start the future of Honeycomb. I gave some advice and some feedback for the Droid Reader Tablet Edition, and when I see the update show up on the market, I downloaded it and saw that some of the advice that I have given to the dev was implemented, which is pretty cool, considering one day thousands of millions of people will be downloading it and running it, and I will know that I have helped them in a way. Sounds stupid I guess, but still just very excited to help out with software and stuff.

i have to say that the zoom is simply awesome. I played around with all the available tablets on the market for about a month and easily settled on the zoom. I love honeycomb, even though it has a few shortcomings at the moment which should get fixed up. Once Google fixes some bugs and adds some much needed features. I've been using my laptop much less now, as well as my phone (hotspot aside). I'm not going to complain much about the limitations and bugs since I know they'll get worked out, but my one big worry is if Google decides to launch its own nexus tablet this summer as well as the speed in which mobile hardware is evolving right now. Anyhow, just my 2cents
I don't think I can take another “is that the new ipad? ” comment at work...
The Xoom IMHO is worth every penny. When you tie in the amazing hardware with Honeycomb and then the amazing features provided by XDA devs, it is beyond any doubt worth it.
I use my Xoom everyday, and for the most part I have absolutely no regrets.
I might add, just consider the screw job Samsung did with the Galaxy Tab by not providing a Honeycomb update on a device that was barely 4 months old at the time in which Xoom RTM.

well...
In the last few days I've gone from "looks promising, glad I have two weeks to decide" to "pry this thing from my hands, I dare you.."
Still completely stock and I am blown away
Between Google Body, YouTube and some network maintenance I did today I couldn't help thinking "this is some star-trek-shiz, man"
I was thinking of buying the iPad 2 here in Oz (I do have an iPad), then decided that I had enough of the no flash support, and to be honest, got bored playing games on it.
I bought my Xoom from the US through Amazon, when I received it, I was like a little kid in a candy store! After a few days, I got bored of it. No SDcard support, no flash, no ad-hoc wifi.....then I cam across these forums....well...let's just say, I sleep with my Xoom under my pillow now. Kidding.
I'm only a newby when it comes to Android, and you can tell, it has so much potential.

Reasons for a Tablet

For a long time I didn't see a reason for me to purchase a tablet. The only use I can think of right now is for me to have more access to my files on a bigger screen via dropbox.
That said, I still reaaaaally want a Xoom, but it's not a good enough reason for me to drop $800+ (Xoom+accessories) since my phone can do the same thing, except on a smaller screen.
Yes, there is the multimedia portion; videos and whatnot but again, what else are tablets used for? I'm not an artist either so the drawing/sketching capabilities do not apply to me.
So hence my question, what do you guys use your tablets for?
Also, do phone applications work on tablets or do tablets have their own set of applications? How is the resolution of the apps if tablets can use the same apps that phones use?
Cheers!
I like this thing, but it's definitely a toy. If I hadn't gotten a great deal on it, I would have been disappointed. Functionality is not what I'd hoped, and browsing the internet is painful at best. I wouldn't dream of using it for serious work. In a few years these will be "useful," but for now it's still just a toy.
It seems like you have your mind made up. I use mines for:
Browsing
YouTube
Gaming
Emulators
Remote Desktop
Texting
Video Editing
Reference
School
Emailing
And a whole bunch of other things. I traded my iPad 2 for it and don't regret it one bit. More appps are coming to Android and are tablet friendly. You can run phone apps also. I haven't even rooted mines yet and if I did the list would be even bigger.

I use mine for several things, but the major thing for which my phone would be completely inadequate is that I teach Bible class on Sunday mornings from my tablet. My tablet is wifi only so I cannot speak for those who can haul theirs with them all the time and get 3g on it.
Generally speaking, Android phone apps will work on an Android tablet. Some apps need to be updated for newer versions of Android, especially Honeycomb, and will force close. Some phone apps will not expand to fill the screen but will only take up a small portion of it. Some apps will fill the screen automatically and the resolution looks fine. Some apps will fill the screen but they look odd. It is a trial and error "test it and see" matter. There are also apps that have be designed or redesigned just for tablets. Most tablet apps will say "for Honeycomb" or "HD" (High Definition) or "for tablets" in their names, but this is not always the case. The Market does have a special section of featured tablet apps and you can find many more by searching on "Honeycomb" or "Tablet."
If you don't want to pay for a Xoom, look into the Iconia A500 like I did. It's very similar, but only costs $450

I actually think browsing the net is the best thing it does. Quick controls and thumb keyboard make it very fast. Use something like pulse and it's a media consumers dream.
I got my 3G Verizon Xoom on eBay for $490 shipped... I wouldn't pay regular price either.
At the end of the day... it IS just a toy, but it is definitely closer to a laptop than the iPad 2 is, I goto the iPad 2 for my wife & she loves it.
Xoom is much more versatile than the iPad 2.
At the end of the day it still seems like it's just an expensive toy as of now...
But I may pick one up tomorrow just to play with it to see if I like it just because I'm kind of a gadget whore. Hahaha
Question, does LauncherPro(Plus) work on tablets or no? Or is there a tablet version of it? I saw some "hands-on" videos on youtube and there seems to be a bit of lag when transitioning between homescreens. Hmmm!
Well I have a post about this. It is not exhaustive but it covers a lot with photos and elaborations.
I am not a random id that do some own ads here but if xda allows html, I will post my original write-up here without hestitation. =)
Here it is
What do you do with your 10.1 tablet toy??
There is no reason for a tablet. Just buy a laptop. Its half the price and its a better value. I would never drop 800 on a tablet.

Well, you just went beyond what I said when I called it a "toy." Its silly to make statements like this when 1) laptops are not "half the price"; 2) nobody cares how much YOU want to spend on your electronics; and 3) not everyone makes the same uses of their stuff as you do. If you like laptops, that's great. I do too. Tablets are a different form factor and thus have different uses.
Anyways, make your own decisions about what you want to spend your money on, just don't expect it to be anything more than it is.

Agreed, my laptop costed me 3 grand, so I disagree with the comment above yours.
Point of this post was to see if there's any other usages for the tablets that I had not known about. Which does not seem to be the case. I was hoping to have more reasons to justify my purchase (to make myself feel less guilty y'know? )
That said, I may buy it and play around with it to see if I like it and/or will be needing it.
Anyone know if its possible to haggle the price at BestBuy or FutureShop in Canada ?

I admit there really is no reason for a tablet. I've wanted a Xoom since release but wasn't comfortable with paying $800 or signing a contract, so the wifi version came out and I jumped on it.
Now that I have the Xoom, I still don't really know what to do with it. I'm reading books on it, thats cool...it's cool for browsing and what not. I can't justify it's reason for existence other than it's cool.
To summarize;
Paid $600 for Xoom Wifi
Can't figure out what I needed it for
Happy as I hell that I have it
It's gadget porn, thats all.

Ha! Haggling a price at a big-box store? Are you from Europe!
Just kidding, but the answer is a flat "no chance." Nobody at those stores have the authority to change pricing.
A word of advice to you: I'd wait for the second generation devices. The Xoom is a solid early-adopter device, but now that you've managed to avoid it for this long I'd put it off for a few more months while the second-gen devices come out. Cheaper, lighter, and (hopefully) will be supported for longer by google/manufacturer. Then again, if you spent $3k on a laptop (I hope it has a money printer and a grappling hook for that price!) then I'm guessing that you're not too worried about the few hundred dollars it would cost to trade up when you want to.

Tablets are a lot easier to carry around. It's easier to hold while standing up, laying in bed, and kicking back on a couch/recliner/lawn chair. I'm tired of being hunched over a keyboard and mouse. I can rest my head and browse. If I need to do something that my Xoom can't. I can RDP into my PC, or walk to my PC and do what I need to do. Also battery life on my Xoom is just awesome.
I feel tablets are like the consoles vs PC war. Sure PC is superior to consoles in many ways, but in my opinion, it can't beat picking up the controller and relaxing on the recliner playing a game. Same sense, I can just pick my tablet up and browse.
I have no laptop nor netbook. So I bought the Xoom.
Yes it is a toy, but using it while lazing on the bed/couch is so comfortable.
Web browsing comes first to mind. Though it won't be as full featured as using the desktop but normal web surfing works very well and using your fingers instead of a mouse to navigate websites makes so much sense.
Next would be ebook reading. Seriously, if you read your books and you have no ebook reader then using your tablet as a book is a must. It has pretty much replaced my normal paperback reading. And best thing is it's pretty easy to just sideload tons of free ebooks into the Xoom for your viewing pleasure anytime.
And finally gaming. Just to pass the time. I pretty much stopped gaming on my nexus one because well, playing games on a 10.1" screen is just so much better.
Just buy the xoom at a Costco/sams club for you can return it after two months.
I plan on doing that so if new generation devices come out then I will just swap it out.
Right now i dont see the need for a tablet, although im envious of the people that do have them. But i just dont see the need for it at the moment, i just recently got a brand spankin new huge 25" all-in-one pc for less then that of the Xoom. As of now the Xoom isn't for me but i have my sights set on the Galaxy 10.1

Considering getting one, would like opinions...

So I am on tmobile with my SGS Vibrant and the sensation isn't getting me excited and the thought of waiting until near winter is killing me, and then I stopped and wondered why I didn't just get a tablet in the mean time?
The only thing my vibrant doesn't do that i wish it did was play dungeon defenders, and with 1gig ram and a tegra2 the transformer should play it easy. Plus I just want a tablet and being pretty darn cheap among it's competition without seeming to sacrifice much I just need the slightest push into trying to track one down.
Any downsides to getting a tablet and not upgrading my phone? Any downsides to getting the tranformer instead of waiting a month or paying a little more for something else?
Also I just read the pcmag review and was getting kind of annoyed. They kept saying it wasn't quite an iPad2 and complained about how the keyboard they got was buggy (iPad2 doesn't have that option, hell no one does), and that flash 10.2 is still in beta, but isn't apple pretty far behind in flash on their "mobile" devices?
Sorry, that almost became a rant. So opinions? Any one else who was like me (on the wall about getting a tablet) who took the plunge and now very happy/unhappy about it? I suppose I could order it on Amazon and would have time to return it, but I would like to know what I should be checking for at least so I can see if it bothers me or not.
Thanks for any and all help. I will now go look at the dev section and see if that gets me more excited or not.
I vote go for it! You wont be dissapointed. There are a lot of fun things to do with the tablet vs just a phone. Let your imagination run with this thing.
I was going to get the Galaxy Tab 10.1. But after finding out that it didnt have a microSD card slot that was a deal breaker. I then began to look at other Tablets. Then I found it. It had all the features I wanted and was cheaper than others. It also had an option for a keyboard that almost doubles the battery life. The decision was easy. I got my Transformer yesterday and I am super happy with my decision. Def go for it. Newegg had them in stock last friday at $499 free ship and no tax. I added a class 10 32 gig microSD. Came to like $570. Also tiger direct had the keyboards in stock as of monday. Have fun with your Transformer. Im very happy with mine.
Wow. When I posted this Amazon had stock of the 16gb model (which would be plenty for me), now they don't. Newegg does but there are no returns for refund (just in case).
I guess I will hold off for now since I am moving at the end of the month any way and shouldn't be splurging right now.
I ALMOST bought one earlier but so many people reported a lot of annoyances that I don't think I would get one without the assurance that I can send it back if I need to.
There's going to be annoyances with any device one gets, really. Especially with a first generation device like the TF. I really do suspect that some of the "problems" voiced are those of perception but, on the other hand, there are some bonafide issues that require addressing.
I've been fortunate, mine has been great. Rooted, Prime 1.4 and OC to 1.4. It performs quite well.
Shiznit... Amazon got more in stock, so I put one on my credit card... At least with amazon if I get it and feel stupid for having done so I get 30 days to return it... I think.
Otherwise I will be telling everyone how cool tablets are by wednesday and playing too much dungeon defenders.
However I already know to check for dust and screen bleed. Anything else to be cautious about? I probably won't pull out the magnifier glass or anything but I being a poor college student I don't want to regret my purchase (I will get the dock when school starts more than likely).
sound balance.
Flash is at 10.3 and Apple refuses to even consider it at the moment. The Android 3.1 update came with an update for the keyboard which it prompted me to install when I first connect to mine. No problems. Nothing close to a force close has appeared since I've had mine. Appreciate the product well enough I took some high resolution photos and did a blog post about it.

Does this mean like speaker placement, or speakers not being equal volume, or like imbalance in tones/pitch?
I've seen this a few times and am not quite sure what to not hope for. I guess I will have to pay attention to if the sound in general bothers me, but thanks.
And @4D, thanks, I will check that out. I hate how everyone bumps tech site reviews and makes it some what of a pain to find decent personal reviews (because, you know, I am not a tech site, I am just a person who wants to know what the device will feel like and not compare it to the ipad2)
see my thread "Still the new hotness".. I'm in lurve baby!!
I've had my TF for two weeks now. I have the 32gb with the dock. Bought it overseas in Australia (ended up being cheaper there than the US)! Apart from the fact that our company has complicated templates for MS Word and Excel, the machine is perfect. I've been able to VNC back into my full sized laptop several times, and it's really going to be a desktop replacement for me on the road.
I had an Asus EeePC prior, and loved that, and this is no different. My one annoyance is the right hand shift key, and that there is no keyboard shortcut for recent apps. However, the shift key is just a getting used to thing. As for the recent apps thing, if that's the only other issue, I'm doing pretty well!!!

Not on contract at the moment, so I don't get upgrades. Maybe early next year I will go back on contract simple for a new phone (since the prices are getting pretty high on their own)
