Setup for Corporate email, contacts, calendar sync via Exchange Active Sync FAILED?! - Xperia Arc General

Hi,
Just switched from iphone 4 to the Arc. Love everything it represents except for the corporate exchange email, contacts and calendar sync.
Tried setting up the exchange email with the same settings per my iphone (SSL on as well). Unforturnately, I have zero success in setting it up and was met with the following error message:
'Setup could not finish - Server requires unsupported security features'
Has anyone else encountered this before when switching from their iphone 4 to arc? I've also done some research online and the SE website actually mentioned that I have to activate 'device administrator' on the phone. So I went to settings->Location & security settings->Select device administrators and it shows 'No available device administrators'??

Hi ludovic.audoin, good to know that you've succeeded in setting it up. My exchange server starts with webmail.xxx.com.au im assuming that's what you mean by mail2web?
What settings did you use for the following:
Domain: did you leave it blank?
Server: webmail type?
User name: just user name of with the @domain?
SSL: On?

in fact mail2web is a exchange server provider. The only thing I do is to fill my email adress and password and after that it connects to mail2web and download the parameters. I did not go inside the manual parameters.

Ok,I've resolved (somewhat) the issue. Basically, the native email client is crap when it comes to supporting corporate exchange mail servers with strict security requirements.
So, instead of using the native mail client, I downloaded the 'enhanced mail' ($9.90) client from the app store instead. Set it up with the same credentials used previously and viola, it worked !!
But I have to admit, being a first time android user, im very disappointed with its exchange email integration as it's not as powerful as the iphone variant. On the iphone, I was able to scroll through folders with ease.
Still not quite sure if the xperia arc is suitable for me due to its limitation in exchange server integration.

Hi not sure why it didn't work in your case as enhanced email does support exchange 2007.
Have you checked your security settings (ssl etc...)? When I set mine up, it actually asked me to set up a 4 digit pin prior to activating the mail, contacts and calendar sync.

Interesting... I now have 4 exchange accounts configured and it all worked great.
Must be some weird configuration.

It depends on the security settings of your corporate exchange server. Mine's very strict due to the nature of my work.

Could be. And most exchange administrators make tweaks for the iPhones because the bosses are using them.

Yeah mate! I got mine off eBay Aus and it's a Singapore stock (I think). Seller is local though and great after sales service. My arc's speaker died after 2 days and I got it replaced by the seller. You can probably get it around $650 delivered.
If you are planning to go on contract, I saw Optus selling it on the $59/mth contract for 24 months. Cheers.

Same here.
Our Exchange setup was just changed to support the enhanced security features and they just forced the "remote wipe" capability.
So everybody who was used to the stock client is shut out!
Google issued a patch for the same BUT to ENTERPRISE customers only!

What the hell was that about.
The stock android mail client was working for me a lot of the people and now it just gives some error about unable to connect.
Now if we need our corporate email we have to either buy the Commercial product:
TouchDown Email : $20
MoxiMail : $20
Enhanced Email : $10
OR compromise with the free clients which just does mail.
K-9 Mail works for most of the Motorola Droid phones.
I have a LG GT540 and it stopped after a day.
MailDroid works better on LG GT540 android phone. I have a rooted android 2.2 on GT540.
All the free mail clients are the basic exchange mail clients which can help you to read email and reply to email.
It does not have GAL (corporate addressbook Lookup). So you need to know the email address of the person to send email to.
Workaround: Corporate AddressBook
Looks up corporate addressbook and has search function.
After a few weeks use most of them switched to MailDroid which seems to be more stable.
Any of the genius out there who have been working on the ROM have been able to get the patch in so that the stock email client can work as it is supposed to work?
That was the core function most users use their phone for and now it does not work unless you pay up and buy a commercial product.

I can dial into my company network using my XDA and dialup, ok. Does anyone know how I can receive my corporate emails? I suspect I need some software for the XDA which can access MS-exchange servers, is there any such out there?

I can do my corporate e-mails trough a pop3 server, and with the nice patch I can do my private e-mails trough a hotmail http account.

So check if you have a pop3 mailserver account.
Similarly I check my corporate Exchange server with Pocket Outlook using IMAP4 (can get folders other than Inbox). I also get my Yahoo email using POP3.
Hmm - no idea how to use IMAP4 or how to get them through e pop3 server.
I don't know much about how mail works, i just usually collect it and send it. details on how to set these two possible solutions would be most welcome.

At my work place, I can access email remotely though the web interface of Exchange / Outlook. I still have to be connected the RAS service here though as the server is not advertised on the internet.

Newbie Question... What is push email?

Just got my Cingular 8125 as I have a need to check email on the road. I will be using wifi for connectivity to the internet and hopefully to check email.
I'm very new to this and don't understand the concept of email to smartphones. I keep coming across the term push email when researching upgraded roms. I think I want it but I'm not sure what it is. I'm assuming it allows my phone to just get email without having to connect to GPRS or wifi. Sort of like text messages. But really I have no clue and don't know if I need exchange server or not.
Here is what I am looking for... I have about 5 different POP3 accounts for my own domain names. I would like to be able to check these 5 accounts from my phone. I would also like to check my gmail account. I did find some instructions for this on these forums. Ideally, they would just go to the phone as they arrive. Another option would be for me to manually check email occassionally throughout the day through GPRS or Wifi. Would I be able to receive a phone call if I'm downloading emails?
These email accounts are from my websites on shared servers with a hosting provider. I do not have an Exchange Server. Looked into a company called web2email but not sure if I need that either.
Basically, what is the best solution for me to get my emails in a quick and reliable manner. Also, if anyone has any advice on syncing with Outlook that would be great... for instance, if I check email with my phone, is it removed from the server so when I check on my laptop it will show no emails? Then when I sync, will the phone emails be added to my laptop? Vice versa?
Appreciate any advice you might have. I tried to search and couldn't really find anything. If you would rather post a link to another thread or site tutorial that would be fine as well.
Yes i think you guessed right, push email is email that is sent to your device as soon as it arrives to your email account, but you will need a push email account and your gprs will need to be on continously. Some have reported higher costs with push email as it has a higher data use the ordinary pop email. Choice is yours!
When you check emails with your phone, the email stays on the server, and you can set your laptop to do likewise under your pop email account settings.

The device at periodic intervals issues a "heartbeat" to an Exchange server (belong to either your company, yourself, or an e-mail provider). The Exchange server checks the account, sees if you have new mail, and then pushes it back onto the device.
The battery drain is minimal compared to setting up Pocket Outlook to check for messages every X minutes, but it is slightly more than a true push system such as RIM's Blackberry devices. This is because RIM uses true push e-mail, where the network wakes up your device when you receive a new e-mail.
There's a free e-mail provider out there that supports Microsoft Exchange and Direct Push with ActiveSync. Check out the Mail2Web live service, at:

So it sounds like I will need an exchange server which I don't have. I just have a standard POP3 account with my site hosting...
I like the push idea and will checkout mail2web. I will email them some questions as their site is somewhat confusing for me. It says the free account does not support POP3. I'm pretty sure I would need that. Their business accounts will work but I'm not sure if the pricing per user would allow me to use all 5 email accounts. That said though, if the free version won't work for me the paid accounts are very reasonably priced.
So can someone post a easy walkthru to getting functioning push on a 8125?

Well, when you use a provider like Mail2Web you don't need to setup your own Exchange server, they let you use theirs. And unfortunately, Mail2Web's free live service which lets you use Direct Push doesn't let you use POP3. However, their Outlook Mobile Access is a web based e-mail system that is absolutely great, it mimics Microsoft Outlook's interface and for all intents and purposes eliminates the need for you to use POP3 to check e-mail from your account. When you sign up with them, your e-mail address is [email protected].
As you may have already noticed, for a fee you can upgrade to POP3 access and other e-mail solutions including using your own domain (such as [email protected]) but I have yet to find a need for this. I just forward all my e-mail accounts to my mail2Web account with one drawback: When people get my e-mail it says it's from [email protected].
But with 1 GB of free storage, and a 10 MB (if i remember correctly) message limit and free Direct Push, I'm not one to complain.

Some hosting sites (running on Linux usually) will run something like Procmail that allows you to set up filtering and forwarding rules. You might be able to get your hosting POP3 accounts to forward copies of new mail to your mail2web account.
Alternatively, you could poll the POP3 accounts from your PC at home, and have an Inbox rule that forwards relevant (ie non junk/spam) to your mail2web account. That just means having your email client running all the time to do the forwarding...
Final thought is, as you said, to set up Exchange at home, poll your POP accounts (which I believe you can do with the version of Exchange in the Small Business Server) and then set up Push with your own server.

Good suggestions. Yes, I can set up all sorts of forwards on my hosting server but I like keeping things separate as they are all different businesses. I like to reply from the different emails as well. I also don't want to rely on my home email client and setting up an Exchange server seems complicated (to someone that didn't even know what push email was :wink: )
It does seem that the paid version at web2email will do the trick. It is only a couple bucks a month. I need to see if I can have multiple pop3 accounts though. I don't mind paying a few bucks each month for this service as it is quite important to me. It is the primary reason I got this phone.

HTC Magic with Rogers ROM - Activesync not working?

I flashed RogerMagicV2a-signed onto my Vodafone HTC Magic and everything works like a charm. The device seems much faster to me now and I love the keyboard.
But I have problems getting Activesync to work. If I enter my account details including the correct server name (SSL checked) it alwas complains about wrong authentication (Authentication failed). I also checked with "Touchdown" which successfully showed my inbox using the same credentials.
Does anyone know about problems with Rogers Activesync implementation?
Server is Exchange 2007 (I assume).

Second: As far as i know (maybe i'm wrong) there is no software named ActiveSync, are you talking about HTC Sync? If TouchDown works meybe it's a software problem so meybe you will obtain more help from the software authors .

Ok, sorry for that! I am so impatient because everything else works great and the ActiveSync support would be the last thing to make the Rogers Rom perfect!
With ActiveSync I mean the integrated support of the Rogers Rom to sync with a Microsoft Exchange Server over the air which would be great because then I could finally sync my work calendar and contacts with my HTC Magic.
Perhaps something is broken in the Rogers Rom regarding the ActiveSync client - that is my question here.

I read somewhere that the Rogers ROM's Active Sync does not support PIN security settings forced by the exchange server. This would be bad.
Search for that topic, I'm not sure if it was here at xda-devs.

Yes I also read this but our Exchange Server does not have PIN security enabled. I tried another app (I think it was Roadsync or Touchdown) and it worked there.
But I would like to have my calender and contact entries integrated into the apps, not in a separate app like Roadsync does it.
Any other ideas?

That is corrent....the implementation on the HTC Rogers ROM for Activesync does not appear to support basic security (ie. PIN setting) that is by default on the Exchange Mobile settings.
I requested our IT dept. put me as an exception and it works fine. This will be an issue for any corporate users. Touchdown and Moxier both support PIN security, so you won't run into problems there, but it is VERY annoying.

To get it correct: I do not have to enter a "pin", I just log on using my normal Windows credentials, i.e. domain\username and password. This should work, right?
Or does "pin" mean the basic authentication using HTTP-Auth with my windows credentials?

PIN means the forced security policy, sent from the Exchange server to enable Remote Wipe for instance. On a Windows Mobile phone you need to enable the phone security key, which you have to enter after a defined time of no use or at power-on. The policy has to be managed by the phone in a way the Exchange server accepts, otherwise you are not able to sync.
Maybe that's your problem. Anyway I don't know, how TouchDown or RoadSync handle the security policy.

I think this is the problem.
To sum it up: HTC's integrated ActiveSync client does not support PIN security settings that are enforced from the Microsoft Exchange server. I also tried to set up device locking where you have to draw a line on the display - but this also did not work.
Is there a way for you developers or the guys at HTC to fix the ActiveSync client that it pretends to have PIN security settings enabled? Touchdown seems to do the same here because it works like a charm.
It would be great if some of you would find a solution for this!

I'm looking for exactly that. I have Hero installed on my Magic an I can get touchdown to work - sort of. It gives me a new inbox every time I sync and then I have to refresh the folders to get rid of the "fake" inboxes and get to my mails.
It works... badly, but still...
I'm also looking for an app that'll integrate into the phone.

Same problem here, the Rogers ActiveSync on my Magic won't work with my work Exchange server. However, TouchDown works. I heard that the Rogers ActiveSync requires Exchange web services or something like that, whereas TouchDown has real Exchange 2007 support. It seems like my corporate server only supports real Exchange 2007 synchronization :S
Has anyone found a workaround for this? I've thought about paying for an app like TouchDown, but it sucks if the Calendar isn't integrated with the phone's calendar.

My Mom is thinking about getting the Driod X. Her company said that only the iPhone and blackberries will sync with their exchange server. She currently has a blackberry now but it is not hooked up to the email server because they are making her pay the $15 a month for the corporate email. She would like to get her email without the extra cost so she is thinking about an android phone.
From my reading 2.2 fully supports exchange now but when the Verizon store called my mom's IT department to set up her email for her they said that it and all other Android phones are not supported. Needless to say she canceled that purchase.
My question is, is this true? If it is then are their ways around this?
I have an Evo and it works with my exchange server but I am pretty sure my company allows non provisioned devices to sync.

If she knows how to get into her Exchange account via web..she can configure it herself. On the phone, just setup an account for Exchange, plug in username, password, mail server, and domain. Very easy setup.
Mail Server and Domain comes right from her web access address like...

The address to her web account is the only variable. If she has never used it...get her to ask IT guys what it is. She can say so she can check her mail from home. If they are already supporting iPhones...Androids will come in on ActiveSync the same way. IT guys will never know the difference...unless they are network nazis that toggle Active-Sync on/off per user.
I mean they can go in and disable the mobile services in the Exchange tab in AD but i doubt they would do that for every user. I did try her account on my evo once but i didn't get it to work. Maybe i fat fingered something, idk. I need to test it again and maybe try touchdown. $20 one time fee is better than $15 a month and a new blackberry that is already out of date.

Ya best thing to do is try again on your Evo and verify all her settings. Using Touchdown instead of the built-in app is not going to make any difference. Either they will have her Active-Sync locked down or not.
I don't limit access to our Exchange and have connected some Xs (2.1) and several Incredibles (2.1/2.2).
I am working hard break all our Crackberry addicts, and I'm slowly getting there. I would love nothing more than to shutdown our Blackberry server for good.

Exchange for android has the same remote wiping capabilities as the iphone I believe. Some companies are concerned about this enterprise functionality in case the user loses their personal phone.
Anyways, an exchange admin has to permit you to use a cell phone, unless they have it wide open. If you can get them to enable it for "iphone" it should also work for android.
you can even log into owa and wipe the phone remotely yourself if you want.
it does identify the type of phone you have though, so they will be able to tell you are not using an iphone.
there might be some reasoning behind them blocking android I am curious
Exchange Is Doable Even On 2.1
I currently have a Droid X. I exchanged it from a Droid 2 because I wanted the bigger screen and more SD memory. In any case, my company uses a hosted Exchange provider. Since I'm the lead System Admin, they had to give me an account that allows for Exchange to work with my Droid. Hell, most of the Senior IT Managers are already using the Incredible.
The bottom line is that the Exchange administrator can allow for a phone to access, just the same way as OWA works for remote users. Since mine is hosted, it cost the company $5 to give me an account allotment. However, if her Exchange server is in-house, then they should be able to provide access for her without any cost. Droid works fine with Exchange. I heard rumours that one of the delays for giving us X users the 2.2 update had something to do with Exchange - maybe they're trying to include Active Sync. However, my phone syncs fine already without Active Sync. So any statement that Droids and Exchange don't get along is a blatant lie or a sorry excuse - and that's coming from a total Noob.
I'd guess that perhaps her company is using a self signed certificate. In earlier versions (dont remember exactly which) of Android there was no "accept all certificates" option and a self signed cert would "fail" auth and not work. In at least 2.1 forward there is now an option for that. I used to have to use touchdown for this exact reason.

Unless they explicitly blocked Android with isa or similar then they simply don't know what they are talking about.
Edit: it wasnt until 2.0 that this feature was added to stock email app. I am willing to bet money this is/was the issue.

That's not necessarily true. Mail server, yes but domain no. I would ask them the domain too as they could have named it anything they want (of course other easyways to find it too, but by the sounds of it they aren't saying they wouldn't let her just that it "won't work" which isn't true, so just have her ask.)
It could be that it is because the phone is still on 2.1 which isn't fully supported by exchange.
I actually hate the name "droid" because some people use it for all android phones and others for the Motorola android phones. My mom calls them all Droids and maybe the IT department says that because to them the Droid wasn't supported which had 2.1 and they just don't know the difference or anything about android 2.2
If they can see what type of phone it is then telling them it is an iPhone and then activating a Droid would probably piss them off and she doesn't want to do that.
Android 2.01 and above supported exchange. I believe 2.01 had some issues with self-signed certificates (I had a Droid 1 and took it back largely because of this ... I have a self-signed Exchange server and I had issues with attachments - but mail & contacts came through fine).
2.1 Improved exchange support and 2.2 is supposed to be even better (I've Froyo'd my X and haven't noticed any difference in my exchange experience)

I am trying to find her external email server address with no luck. The webmail address she has only works when she is connected to her VPN. When she is outside of the VPN that owa address doesn't work in any browser. So how can I find the external webserver address only knowing the email address?
Sounds to me like owa is turned on but not accessible outside of your companies firewall. If that's the case you are probably out of luck.

The company had people with iPhones so it can't be entirely turned off. I think that they have an internal webmail address which would require the VPN and then an external webmail address which would work for phones.
Android pre 2.2 did not fully support all of the exchange security features so its not really a "lie" per say.
We use encryption and remote device wipe and all the security featuers to "lock down" our devices if they are lost / stolen because they could contain PHI.
If you have any phone with Android 2.2+ it should integrate seamlessly with exchange now so there is no reason to not allow the devices on the network unless they just made their own company policy saying so.
I'm not an iphone expert by any means, but I think iphones (pre-ios4.0) use some kind of enterprise sever like blackberry.
That server may be outside the firewall.

Corporate email - No Android Support?

I have an Incredible with 2.2 and Touchdown installed. I just switched jobs to a corporation which claims to only support Iphone and Blackberry. This is troublesome, because I don't want to switch to a 2nd device just to get corporate email.
I can access my corporate email from my phone by going to the corporation's secure OWA server, but I want to get Push email on the phone. On the OWA site, it lists all the server and domain information, but I can't get Touchdown to work. It looks like the company uses Exchange 2007.
Since Touchdown is secure, is there any way for me to get push email from my company, even though they only claim to support iphone/Blackberry?

even if they support just iphone and blackberry, you should be able to get it to work on the inc. just get the server address, domain name (chances are you wont really need it unless the server requires it but get it anyways) and it should work. just try setting it up on the regular phone email. I have exchange 2008 sbs and have no issues.

How do I know which of the following to use as server address, domain... there are a lot of things that say server in the OWA general settings:
Exchange mailbox address: XXXX
Outlook Web Access host address: XXXX
Outlook Web Access host name: XXXX
Client Access server name: XXXX
Mailbox server name: XXXX
... I tried using "Outlook Web Access host address" and it did populate my email and calendar, but when I tried to update something on my calendar on either the device or the OWA server, they wouldn't sync correctly. It also wouldn't download my last 2 weeks worth of email, even though I have that selected in Touchdown.
Any advice on which of the above to enter?

What does that matter if my company doesn't support Android? Doesn't that mean they block these devices?
You can set up an Exchange ActiveSync account on the DINC. We just upgraded to Exchange 2010 (which means HTML emails pushed!) and the only thing you should need is the domain, server address, username, and password.

Ok, but you're not answering my question. If you look in the string above, I'm asking which address I enter for the server. There are multiple server names.

None of the above will give you the server address and domain name. You will have to ask that from the tech support people in your office. it will be something like:
server address: mail.ibm.com
domain: ibm3
username: ssmith (should not be [email protected] format)
password: whatever you enter into owa
thats all you will need. just ask your tech support people. its the same info you would need to set up outlook access on mail.app if you have a mac. just tell them that and you should get the info u need

If none of those are the right address, then why when I plugged in the server name that ended with "/owa" did my calendar and email populate on Android? I tried putting the same info into my Ipad and it wouldn't work. Also, my Android calendar doesn't seem to sync very accurately. But just curious as to why entering the server address that ended with /owa did anything?

Sorry, I'm burning the midnight fuel here and totally misses you're using Touchdown to connect. You can just skip to the bottom of this post then, my comments were in regards to using the built-in Exchange ActiveSync services on the phone.

I definitely can't speak for every Android device out there, but since this post is in the Droid Incredible forum...
I'm running my Droid Inc. with version 2.2, which supports Exchange ActiveSync. Do you have an option to connect to Exchange ActiveSync on the phone? If so, the only things you'll need are your email address and password.
What I can tell you about that address /owa is exactly that: you've connected to the same website OWA server, you're looking at all this server info for. The website server and Exchange ActiveSync server are normally not the same server address, at least that's the way I run the servers for my company... It's also the reason everyone is telling you the info you have won't work, because the names and method to connect are different.
Your best bet is to ask them to send you the instructions they hand out for an iPhone to connect, since it also uses ActiveSync I'm positive whatever settings they're using will be the same. Either way, that's the closest information you'll get to the right settings.

I use touchdown, an do IT for my company. In touchdown did you hit Menu-Enable Push? It sounds like you have it working, try adding an event to your calendar, then manually sync touchdown. Does an event or email show up then?

There is a known issue in android that it will not work with exchange 2010 sp1 server. For some reason the sp1 on the server kills android ( but iPhone continues to function). It has to do with eas but this will hopefully be fixed in gingerbread.

It is a bug, but everything I read in that link was for connection issues with the native Exchange ActiveSync. TouchDown was the work around until they got the native Exchange ActiveSync working correctly, which I don't believe is the issue the OP is having since he's using TouchDown currently.
I've been using TD for the last three months on our Exchange system without issue. My phone vibrates before Outlook even pops up that I have an email, it's a "warning" system!
He said his corporation only supports iPhone & BB.
BB enforces the use of it's BES server license for security and RIM royalties.
Does iPhone have a similar solution to BES?
If so, android exchange may be futile.
GOOD / VOX would be a security product for android, similar to BES.

I got my work email to work with Moxier mail, but not Touchdown with the same settings my IT dept hands out for iphone. There are a couple of strange bugs though. I've noticed that when I leave the work Wifi and transfer over to either 3g or another wifi signal, my email, contacts, tasks, and calendar refreshes from scratch. This is super annoying because I have thousands of contacts. This happens in both Moxier and Touchdown...
And on to Touchdown, which has been the bane of my existence. I've entered the proper server/domain/login information, and 1/10 times it downloads everything from scratch (which takes hours). Then I'll switch to another wifi connection or to 3g, and I'll lose all the information and I'll have to hit resync. When I resync, 99% of the time it hangs somewhere along the line and doesn't load all of my information. This battle can go on indefinitely until everything finally loads - but then all the info will eventually randomly disappear again and I'm back at square one again.
Since the same thing is happening in both Touchdown and Moxier, it makes me think this isn't a coincidence. But why would my information erase when I change signals and then have to completely refresh? And Touchdown probably takes 10 times longer to reload my info than does Moxier.
Any thoughts from the experts?
Bump. Can't anyone help me with Touchdown? It keeps randomly refreshing. Sometimes it's just the inbox, sometimes the sent box, sometimes contacts, and sometimes all of the above. What is going on?
Try contacting the app support people yet?
You can set it to poll for the folders you want it to refresh. You can also enable or disable push, and you can select which folders to refresh. When it goes to refresh, it will always refresh what you've told it to, did you check these settings?

iPhone and Android both use ActiveSync. If one works conceivably the other should, but it's a question of how they're administering the server side. I've seen IT departments that don't turn on ActiveSync at the user level until they confirm that the user is using an approved device.
The fact that the OP says that the calendar is synching and not mail says that it's a client side issue. For starters he should have to just specify the name of the server that's doing OWA and not the full URL path and he's stated that he's adding an /owa to the path.
So unless he has a really fubar Exchange server where he's at everything so far points to client config.
