Official update for XOOM WiFi - Xoom General

I've just spoken with Motorola Product Support Specialist Level 3 to solve on of my problem and during conversation I learn how Motorola will make update for XOOM WiFi tablet after it will become available. According to information from Motorola specialist all WiFi user will need to mail their devices to Motorola Depo and they will update you tablet and after send it back to you. So right now don't have information that update will be available over the air. Support engineers confirmed that 3G version will be updated over the air and WiFi version should be mail to Motorola Depo
I try to clarify the reason of that and got answer that size of the update it to big and becuase of WiFi version doesn't have Cell provider it's no possible to push update on the device. He doesn't sure that correct on 100%, but Motorola Product support database shows only that information.
I make request to double check that information and will post his reply here.
I'm planing to return my XOOM WiFi tablet back, because I will leave US soon and I don't need device that could be updated only via mail it somewhere and doesn't have Update over the Air.
You could check that info with Motorola support and if somebody will have another information, please share it with me. I really love my XOOM tablet and don't want to return it back, but.....

the phone reps have been giving bad info since the beginning. This isnt true.

I trusty would like to believe in that, but specialist told me that it was published in their database, so it's not his dreams or ideas. I understand it's stupid because Recovery menu has option to apply update and even XOOM WiFi version has special option in Settings Menu to check updates, but I also trust internal information that use Motorola Level 3 Product Support Specialist to solve customers problems.
I hope that soon they will have another information, but right now it's ugly(((

I dont understand how this would ever be the case...
Any android phone even non-activated gets OTA updates over WiFi if they're connected to a google account and a network connection. I don't know why a stock honeycomb tablet would be any different.
We'll see when it comes but I highly doubt this. I never trust a CS rep to tell me how it works.

Yes let's see, I also misunderstand why it, but CS rep told that non-activated tablet and WiFi version tablet should be send back to Motorola Depo. I don't want to create mess, I just trying to find the truth.

Even when it has been decided in the past not to provide the update OTA, those companies have still offered the update for downloading from their website so it can used to update manually through a computer. I see no reason why this would not be the case, at the least. I'm definitely calling BS on this one.
Worse case, the update gets leaked here with instructions and I still don't have to send it back. Would prefer not to have to go that route but whatever.

I have a non-activated 3g model and I got the last update just fine. No manufacturer is going to make a device that every time there is a software or firmware update you have to send in your device.

Please post here their reply. I will pray that I got stupid CS rep (even level 3) and I could sleep well with my XOOM instead of pillow ))

I don't believe this for one minute. At the very least we should be able to download it on our PC and then sideload it from I would think.

Call them and check it. I got information the right now only 2 option to update 3G over the air and WiFi and Non-activated via Motorola Depo (((

there's nothing to verify, the guy you talked to just wanted you off the phone so he could get back to getting paid for doing nothing.

no matter what the rep said its impossible that you will have to mail it in. it would be a financial disaster for moto. All updates will be OTA except 4g upgrade.

There seems to be no validity to this claim. The fact of the matter is, if you had to send your device in everytime an update was pushed then you would be sending it in almost every 2 months or so at the expense of Motorola.
Chances are that you got a rep that has no clue what he was talking about. They will find your device, they still have that ability due to the fact that sniffing it out with a unique number should still work. It will update from their servers and your device will boot into recovery just like wiping the device fully does.
Ignore th antics of your rep you spoke with, because even if you HAVE to send it is.... someone will post it online no matter what.

Yea right ... in this world where you can buy gigabyte games online and download them and watch HD movies streamed, Motorola will ask all for the wifi tablet to be returned every time it has a major update. It sounds like it was crafted to give it as much credibility as possible.
The old adage applies:
"Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence"
A post on a blog does not "extraordinary evidence" make

That's such a ridiculous idea.

I agree this can't be true...and if somehow wifi version isn't upgradeable via OTA(which I find next to impossible. I am sure that they would rather post it on their site rather then have people send it in...
Also is it the device that doesn't support sd cards or honeycomb? because I thought Google pushed all honeycomb updates.

This is not true at all, ALL 3G NON ACTIVATED xooms got the 3.01 update Via wifi meaning all wifi models will get the update just the same.

total BS. A Rep told me that you would get an update when connected. And she also mentioned that she was an alien from outerspace.

man can u imagine if everyone did have to send there xoom in to get it updated? They would have to have a hole frign factory the size of 4 football fields designated just to updating these xooms. Itd have to be easyer just to ota it. I may be exaggerating a lil about the football field but you know what I meen. Sounds like a big fluster cluck to me hard telling when or if you would get it back.

I agree that this idea completely stupid and ridicules. I also try to argue with CS rep, but he stay on his point. That coming update will be like i describe in OP based on the information that he could see in Moto data base.
Again I hope that my CS rep was stupid and wrong.

So whats the deal with Google support ?

I see Google employees posting on google forum, but all of them dont even answer the real questions. In fact I've notice that they bump up the threads where people (or maybe the same google employees) write how they love their N1 and how its so much better then iPhone.........

just go to HTC if your having phone issues, and Tmobile if your having network issues. Think of Google as a retailer. for the most part phone, or warranty issues will be handled by the manufacturer, and network, by the network.

Google will likely expand their support if they want to continue selling directly to the public. I think they underestimated mob mentality with the logic that HTC would support the phone, and the carrier would support the services. However, this is like Microsoft selling you a computer directly (via a hardware partner). There's a knowledge base and multiple forums support venue's and while Google lacks a phone number to call, and Microsoft has this, MS will also bill you for your phone support request.
Apple works a bit differently, they build the hardware in house and support it directly. They've also been doing this for years so the structure is in place already. Google doesn't want to build hardware, they just wanted to get phones out without being as reliant on the hardware makers to push updates to the handsets released (combating the stagnation of the current phones).

If you take another look at the links on the site you posted, all the help links link to Google's N1 "help" forum. HTC is not providing help for the N1 and from what I've seen, neither is Google. That's why I will flash Cyan's ROM when he releases one and will use XDA for support as I've always done (even when I used WinMo). LOL.

UMA WiFi Software From Kineto

I was just wondering if anyone had come across the Smart Wi-Fi app from Kineto that T-Mobile is purportedly testing now. Is there a more concrete timetable for release known. Also, I have heard conflicting information about the software requirements. I have read somewhere that it would run on any Android device with v. 1.5 or greater, but I have also heard that it requires special APIs that it needs to hook into so does that mean that the carrier would have to issue new builds of Android for each device with the APIs built in or did Google bake the APIs into Eclair or Froyo?
Anyone? I'm only gonna bump this once and if no one answers I'll take that as a confirmation that no one knows.
Ill throw down a bump on this.
Looks like they have officially put out the info. Now it is just waiting on T-mobile to push it out to users.
Funny thing is they say it is for Froyo, but Eclair is being showed on Vibrant as a demo.
http://www.kineto.com/press_releases/Kineto_Smart_Wifi_Android2_Froyo.php
Im kinda curious what this means exactly.
The press release doesn't seem to imply that this will be for one network or country, nor did the article that I read here.
Hopefully this will turn into something that'll be for any droid device. As someone who lives in a blackspot I would LOVE this kinda service. Here's hoping it gets into a release candidate soon. Wish they had opened it up to everyone rather than keeping in closed development tho, but oh well.
This would be a seriously amazing service and really boost android's rockingness.
I'd love to see if you could hack this to get true phone capability to wifi only tablets somehow *ponders*

UPDATE coming this weekend - eLocity A7

Just got word we should have another update this weekend, possibly by today.
Main issues to be addressed in this current update are the SD Card available space issue, WIFI issues, and MAC address format issue.
This will be followed by another update in just a short time, they wanted to get those crucial updates out first. They are trying to walk the fine line of publishing too many updates and waiting too long in between them.
Stream TV Networks does remain committed to the eLocity A7 and is working to improve their customer service.
The update will be here once it is published : http://elocitynow.com/support_downloads.shtml

cpg716,
Since you have an ear, try to talk them into adding CIFs to the kernel and 3g USB support. That would make this tablet a strong competitor. Thanks for the update.

Our fight Against Verizon & Motorola

If you haven't heard all ready Verizon is tracking down root users and limiting there data or fully suspending it so watch out. But we have to fight back against them by hiding Verizon from seeing that we are proudly rooted and some people have said the would sue Verizon. Please do whatever you can to fight against this.
Also motorola and htc are going to start doing the same.

This isn't fake either. Scroll down toward the bottom.
Milestone 1/2 users don't need to worry about Verizon, since their phone is GSM.
Verizon operates on CDMA (Droid 1/2/X/Pro).
Milestone 2 is not the same phone as Droid 2, our phone is (most of them) unlocked to work with any GSM operator.

I still think this is not true, but what tdo I know.
You guys say its not true, unlikely etc... but I'll tell you something.
Keeping in mind the provider statement is obviously valid, though I do have some disturbing information which some of your may not be aware.
Ever since purchasing my MS2 I've been unable to upload to Picasa... I posted about this on the Motorola MS2 forums, one of the Motorola rep's on there asked for the email address linked to my Blur account.
After supplying him my email address, He was able to access all kinds of information about my phone, full dumps of logs, errors, applications installed etc.
So in essence, Motorola have full access to your handset remotely... theres nothing really stopping Motorola providing specific information to providers, such as handsets with SU installed etc.
I would highly suggest you avoid binding your handset to your blur account if you have any concerns.

Best piece of advice ever. Motorola or any other manufacturer does not need to have any information of yours and that is why it is never a good idea to make it easier for them to have the informaiton.
Why do you worry about motorola having your information when Google knows about all the stuff you do with your cellphone ? Motorola clearly told everyone if you want to have a device that you could modify all around, " Buy other brands ! "
Plus, can't see any proof of what you say. No room for nonsense here.

Motorola do not need this information - Google has to have your info for GMail, Market, etc. to work.

clarification on updates

Hello,
I just got a Focus v.1.3 unlocked from AT&T.
I am living in Europe and my carrier is Vodafone.
It's unclear to me how updates work.
I currently have updated the phone to 7390 using Zune desktop app.
However no sign on the 7392, I've been checking about that.
I know that updates are delivered by the carrier and that AT&T doesn't deliver yet the 7392 update for Focus v.1.3
But, in the case of using the phone by Zune, shouldn't the updates be available?
Thanks in advance!
Anyone throw some thoughts?
Thanks
HKLM\System\Platform\DeviceTargetingInfo\MobileOperator
Edit it and instead of "ATT-US" (original value) leave blank
You will get an update. I did and I have Focus v1.3, originally on AT&T.
After that update you can revert back to the original value.
Also, read my post here.
Thanks for your comment EnderPsp.
But I don't get it really.
Since you update by Zune, why isn't the phone getting the updates?
This what I don't understand.

Either take my word on it and do the suggested change in registry (you need to be unlocked for this) or wait until the carrier (AT&T) releases the update. Considering the nice timeframe they haven't yet, I'd say there is a good chance Mango will come directly before AT&T releases 7392 for v1.3
The phone isn't getting the update because the carrier has not relased it (for Focus v1.3). However, Microsoft has released it for all other unbranded phones and if you unbrand (modify the registry as I suggested), the phone will get the Microsoft update instead of AT&T update. There are two minor differences in AT&T/MS updates but the main bonus is you can update to Mango.
Btw, you don't need to say thanks, just hit the "Thanks" button
OK, let me get this straight.
So Zune is a desktop app written by Microsoft that talks to a phone with an OS written by Microsoft but Zune gets updates from AT&T ?
Why the heck do they do that?
OS updates doesn't have to do with the carrier.
I mean, it's not like if you have a AT&T branded phone you also have a branded WP7.
Why are the updates coming from AT&T anyway?
Why isn't the phone getting updates from Microsoft?
Please enlighten me!

Partly correct.
Zune is an app that is an intermediary between the cloud and the WP7 phone. Imagine it like a supermarket.
Now, the updates are coming initially from MS but carriers are responsible for their phone's update, service, warranty, quality etc. So they will be the ones actually releasing the update IF the phone is branded by them. This is done to avoid possible issues (any customer service the carrier need to do it even if it's a potential OS problem). Otherwise the general update from MS applies for unbranded phones (ie prepay, free phones etc). The carriers even modify sometimes the update to include specific features. But this also means more QA time...
The carriers know which one is their phone because Zune reports the IMEI and then MS redirects the phone to the carrier corresponding to that phone's IMEI.
So carriers are doing QA job on how a specific phone work with OS?
It's pretty weird that carriers do more then just provide phone services(call, data, etc).
The fact that carriers are modifying the OS update is completely idiotic from my point of view.
They should not mess with OS at all.
I pretty sure that actually they are using some tools provided my Microsoft.
So it's even more idiotic.
I know that carriers have specific apps, but these should be just apps like any other apps.
I don't understand how Microsoft, which is very late anyway at the smart phone party, likes this situation.

The carriers usually alter this not for their customer's benefit but their own MS provides guidelines and help on how to do the alteration and how to QA. Personally, I don't think MS likes it, but allows it. Pretty much the same as other phone manufacturers.
Also, personally I don't like this carrier update fiasco either, and I agree with you. But, carriers are the ones selling the phone so, MS had to cut a deal somewhere to penetrate the market.
I guess the next thing for Microsoft would be to buy or have some kind of strategic partnership with a carrier.
That would be new But it's highly unlikely it will happen.

I don't know if that will happen, considering iOS, Android and RIM
If they do it, they would do it in US, but no carrier would accept losing money and customers by signing exclusivity.
However, MS do have strategic partnerships with all major phone manufacturers: Samsung, HTC, LG, Nokia etc. THAT will help
Sometime in the future, as hardware advances, phone calls will be carried only over internet.
So these idiotic issues might stop.
And stupid carriers reign will end!

So you can get the NoDo update after 7392, also, otherwise you might not get some updates in Zune. If you get the update when unbranded, better!
That's how it worked before Mango. Not sure now, but if you're getting the updates unbranded, don't bother putting it back.
