You mean why would ESPN do this? Easy. Because they're a ****ty company. Welcome to the party, if you're not just now figuring that out.

Here's a list of some of the best sports apps
http://lifehacker.com/#!5782923/the-best-sports-apps-for-android
I use scorecenter. It's got all the scores and a crawl on the bottom for news, I've never used their mobile alerts.
From their site:
"Why wait to catch the score? Sign up for *FREE ESPN Alerts and get the latest scores, breaking news, and ESPN Fantasy updates sent to your phone. Sign up is easy, you choose the Alerts you want to receive. It's *FREE, and it works on any mobile device that can receive text messages." I guess they should update that to say "except Sprint". I'm sure it's a money thing, I'm sure ESPN is probably pissed at Sprint or wants a bunch of money from them.

I liked receiving texts alerts without opening an app...
I'm testing buzzbox right now, going to see how that works.

its now a story: http://www.androidcentral.com/espn-text-alerts-shut-out-sprint-network#comment-126800
Update: And just like that, we get a tip about what's really going on. Here 'tis:
It's not a "money thing" in the traditional sense. They didn't give us a real clear picture of what's going on, but ESPN offers these messages free of charge to ESPN.com members, and Sprint is going to start charging their customers for each individual text message, regardless of having an unlimited messaging package. ESPN really isn't going to put up with it being "free," yet not free.

This stinks. ESPN alerts were nice because they gave you the scoring plays. If I choose alerts for the Yankees and A-Rod hits a 2 run homer, it will show he hit a 2 run homer and R.Cano scores, the same with football alerts.
I have already paid my membership but will not be re-subscribing to espn insider or doing any espn fantasy leagues.
There are other alerts out there, I will just have to search for something else. It stinks, these are FREE apps (I pay for espn's extra services and in my mind pay sprint for extra premium $10 fee).
It seems like things are continuing to get worse at Sprint - I lost premier status upgrade, I lost espn alerts, who knows what will happen with the network (if they will go LTE or Wimax). Every time I try to use my mlb at ball app to listen to the game, the game keeps cutting out every 10-15 seconds and network speeds seem to be getting slower and slower.

Sprint Data Worldwide

This is incredible.
I TAKE IT BACK, THIS IS JUST FOR PALM AND WINDOWS MOBILE. I KNEW IT WAS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, BUT STILL GOOD.
With this great add-on, you have the ultimate travel companion. Take your PDA with you overseas, including countries like Canada, Mexico, China, India and more. For use with Windows Mobile or Palm operating system devices, this add-on includes unlimited international web access and email. You can find the nearest piazza on the go, reply while relaxing and keep up with your inbox beyond the borders.
This comprehensive coverage also includes access to your corporate email account with Microsoft Direct Push Technology via ActiveSync. Pair it with the Samsung ACETM, and you can connect to the widely used overseas GSM/GPRS networks in more than 110 countries.
Pricing
* Data Worldwide — $40/mo.
------------------------------------
If you are going to travel, and if your EVO works on that country, you can activate this for one month, and when you are back you deactivate this.
I have two friends with iPhone, one went to South Africa, and just for not tUrning off the internet, he got a 3000.00 bill.
Another friend went to Europe and India, and the bill was so high, that he doesn't want to hear iPhone or ATT again in his life. And his dad is on the Forbes list for India, so Imagine.
You're wrong about your update. Well, you're not wrong, but they told you bad information.
I just had this active on my Evo as I drove through Canada. It was the $40 a month "Unlimited Data Worldwide".
You just have to talk to the right person.
My order of events to get this working:
1) Go online and talk to customer support. They tell me that after the 10th of this month, there will be no unlimited data add-on.
2) Call and be told that only Palm and BlackBerry phones are capable of this add-on.
3) Call and be connected to the International Department. They tell me that my wife's Hero could use it, but not my Evo. Their reason was "The new 4G setup makes it not work worldwide"
4) Go online to their international department's live chat. They tell me that I can only do unlimited texting in Canada for free, but no data without being charged 0.02 cents per KB.
5) Call back and talk to someone competent in the international department, they activate the add-on onto my plan.
6) Spend 13 days driving around Canada with unlimited data, ftw.
Read below and call that number to get it working for you.
In the event you have questions about your international service, please dial: • 1-888-226-7212, option 2 (while in the United States) • International access code, then 1, then 817-698-4199, option 3 (while traveling outside of the United States, from your Sprint phone (this call will be free). From a landline phone: Call + 1-817-698-4199, option 3 (access and connection fees may apply in addition to long-distance costs). • Or you may chat with our Sprint Worldwide Agents from www.sprint.com/international (click Chat with us) during the hours listed below: o Monday-Friday: 6 a.m.-11 p.m. Central o Saturday & Sunday: 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Central o If outside of these hours you will be directed to email us Please review and print the information prior to your traveling.

Force Roam to Verzion?

I love my Epic. Just switched from Verizon and have found I roam a lot on verizon. Which is fine, but when I'm home it's half a bar or sometimes no bars at all but still sprint. Time without a signal right now is 97%. This is draining my battery and causing me to drop calls. Is there a setting to prefer use of strongest tower regardless if it's roaming? If I roam to Verizon it's Full bars.
Thanks,
See if you can get an airwave.
why would you switch to verizon when it has no 4g?
@rawsoup. So 4G does exsist?? Not available here. I was curious if there was an app to use strongest tower regardless if it's roaming. Wherever I go it's always half a bar with sprint. So calls will connect but then they drop. I guess I'll just get an airwave for my house, work and the grocery store.

hmmm. thats funny what area (not specific address, i'm not a stalker) do you live in?
I have to agree with OP on this...the ability to flop over to roaming would be awesome. It's amazing..this same post has shown up for a ton of different phones throughout the years and the first response is always "why?".
I live in Queens in a basement apartment, 15 minutes from Manhattan. If I go outside my building, I get 2-4 bars service. Depending on where I leave my phone in my house, I get 0-1 bars, 1 if I'm really, really lucky and have been a good boy all year.
Currently, without paying stupid amounts of money for an airave (I don't even make that many phone calls, just need to be available for work), I have to turn the phone radio off, load up sipdroid to use with my gizmo5 account, and rely on google voice completely. I don't get texts, but since I have GV I get those texts and that suffices for now...but it's a lot of work to simply be able to be reached.
Verizon has 5 bars in my apartment. I shouldn't have to pay sprint whatever ridiculous amount they're asking for the airave hardware and the service when sprint already has roaming deals with verizon, and I pay for these roaming contracts in my monthly plan. I should be able to switch over to roam in my house for the off chance that I do get a phone call, and so that my battery isn't drained completely by two hours of trying to aquire sprint's signal.
The Palm Pre had a roam only hack, and it was beautifly done. Can someone get the ball rolling for an android app? I know there have been three billion posts in relation to this feature on android...but it would be really, really helpful.
I agree but airwaves hve been mostly free for people calling in needing help with ****ty service inside. Especially if you can be nice but still be fcirm with pleading your case.
Now sometmes new accounts need to wait 90 days for new free hardware to establish payment history and if you don't pay your bill or in general are a pain in the balls don't expect them to help you.
However many people get them without the monthly fee and free hardware.
Looks like roam control from the market will work on Samsung phones nextweek

Sweet, just what I'm looking for. Thanks!
I guess if I root my phone, sprint won't let me return it with their 30day worry free program. I guess I'll just have to just trust it works. (unless there's a unroot option)

This loser stole my app from the market and is trying to sell it. No one wants you here. Plus, quit spreading bad information, it doesn't work for *all* android phones...take the Droid X for example.
Wow. You people need to stop wondering why and just answer the question. Clearly OP doesnt have any type of good signal.
I live in the bronx in a basement apartment and i get 2 bars if im lucky. But its always switching between sprint and verizon killing my battery, lagging my phone and dropping my calls. F the airwave. I had force roaming with CM6 on my hero and would use it when im home and get full bars with no interuption and then switch to sprint when i step outside my door where i get full bars.
But anyways, nah i dont think the epic has force roaming yet...when someone ports CM6 over it should have it.
You can go into settings/wireless & networks/ mobile connection and set it to home only and it should be able to hold onto that 1 sprint bar you have and it wouldnt constantly switch to vzw and back, killing your phone.
It sucks. I remember i would hope i started roaming before i got the option for force roamong lol
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
And yeah roaming is free and unlimited on verizon. But apparently theres a data cap of 300mb on 3g and unlimited 4g roaming (which is bs cuz sprint is the only one using WiMax) with the 4g phones....but im not entirely sure...
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
Just so people know, there is an app in the market called "Roam Control" that allows you to force roaming on your Epic. Disclaimer: I am the developer.
Otherwise, with HTC phones, you can run CM6 which has the roaming option built in.
The joker above (fazooley) pirated my app and is trying to sell it to people for $1. I think you're better off ignoring him.

Using evo in europe?

Hopefully someone can answer this. Is there a way for my evo to run correctly in europe (england and france)?
I know sprint offers phones and plans that you can "rent", but id like to run my evo.
Any ideas?

I have heard people say that you can get on CDMA networks overseas, but that it will cost you an arm and a leg. Many people seem to prefer using some VOIP solution and wifi access. Unfortunately we aren't on a GSM phone where you could purchase a cheap SIM card for a little bit of usage.
Answer: NO.
Why: CDMA (the technology that Sprint, Verizon, and MetroPCS use) is only used in North America, and certain parts of Asia (namely, Japan and China each have a carrier or two that use it). GSM is used everywhere else.
The EVO has CDMA and WiMax. It does not have GSM.
I'm not sure how Skype works on Android (haven't tried it). But assuming Skype works somehow, couldn't you just latch onto some sort of wifi?
Can't use the EVO to make actual cellular phone calls in Europe. Like stated above, the EVO is a CDMA phone and the only standard used there is GSM. You can however, use the EVO for just about everything else while you are there. My brother just came back from France last week and he was there for a month so before he went we had to figure out what we could do with our EVO's while he was there and I was in the US. When you are there turn on "airplane mode" and leave it like that the whole time you are there. This way, the phone isn't draining battery power trying to search for a CDMA tower to connect to.
The main thing is you will NEED TO HAVE WI-FI access to do anything I'm describing below.
I used to Tikl, push to talk app to keep in contact with my brother. I didn't have much luck using Qik, but I was able ooVoo to do video chat with him. I was still able to use Google Lattitude to see where he was at. His GPS actually worked there also. It was not as fast like here in the US but he was able to find his location.
My sister is in Manchester, England right now with her EVO the same thing applies there also. I do seem to notice that public wi-fi access is much more readily available in England than France. Today I "Lattituded" while she was at some hookah bar and was able to do video chat with everyone there while I was sitting at home in Iowa.
If you are currently using some kind of VOIP app now, make sure all the people you want to be in contact with are using it too. For a psuedo SMS app we used "Whatsapp" to handle our overseas text messaging since it uses internet rather than cellular service.
Hope this helps.
GPS will work anywhere.. it is a satilite signal..
the only issue will be the map you need to use with that signal.
why it is taking longer.. you have moble networkturned off. they phone use moble network to get quick read on you. the GPS is to fine tune you down to with in 9 meters or so.
Just went to France and ROME this past Sept. My evo was a paper weight. I just used it for the time & to take pictures...

Just get a Sprint world phone from eBay. HTC PRO2 for like 100 buck. There are cheaper ones also. Then take it to sprint to get a sim card. It will work anywhere in Europe. When you get to Europe buy a cheap prepaid sim card to get a local number if thats what you want. Also tell Sprint to unlock it. They will since there is no contract on it. When you get back just switch back to your EVO.
no way to get evo working in Europe since there is no CDMA network
U can use skype+wifi hotspot there, tons and tons are FREE!!!
You can also get a google-voice number, a sipgate account, and add the sipgate number to google voice, then install a sip-compatible client on the evo. (Fring does work). People will be able to call your google-voice number and it will RING on wifi.
... though I do think Skype has a plan that gives you a number, I don't know what it costs.

A software update is now available for the Bell version of the Motorola Atrix!
- To download the update manually:
Go to: Menu > Settings > About Phone > Software Update
- I'm not sure what the size of the update file is, but I would suggest downloading it over WiFi as opposed to the Bell network so you don't exceed your data allowance and incur extra charges.
- Ensure that your phone is at least 50% charged before attempting the update. Idealy, charge it beyond 50% to be safe.
-- The updated version is v37.23 and brings Android Froyo up to version 2.2.2, and contains numerous updates:
Upload Data Speed
Increased upload speed at which data can travel on the network.
Data and Voice Connection
Improvements to prevent interruptions to data and voice connection.
Screen
Improvements to prevent screen from freezing.
Skype
Improvements to call audio function so it is easier for the person you called to hear you. Please note this application is not pre-loaded on phone, but is available for download from Android Market.
Wi-Fi
Increased functionality by enabling Yahoo Email to be sent over a Wi-Fi connection.
Display
Improved International Roaming Warning Message by simplifying user notification so that it only appears on the screen when you move to a new network.
Happening Widget
Improved Happenings Widget to ensure that you receive the latest updates across the social networks you are connected to such as Facebook, MySpace, Twitter.
Calling
Improvements were made to incoming and outgoing call functionality to ensure a more seamless experience
Expanded Language Support for Webtop
Accented character support within Webtop application.
Improved Support for POP/SMTP Email
Support for SMTP outgoing servers that do not require authentication
Improved Exchange Performance

Look at T Mobile and AT&T. I'm on AT&T, I don't use cellular data but use WIFI hotspots instead; however, AT&T has added a lot of data options. I'm not sure that I'd be willing to spend a lot of money for streaming music or video via cellular since cellular data is priced so high, but to each their own. Here's a link to a comparison of 5 AT&T MVNOs that was updated this summer. http: //www.prepaidphonenews.com/2011/09/five-at-mvnos-compared.html T-Mobile has a new MVNO named Solavei that you might want to check out, too.

I have a SIM from StraightTalk (it's the AT&T one) and I have had no problem streaming audio (with Pandora or Google Music) or Video from Netflix (haven't tried anything else other than Youtube and that works too). I pay under $45 a month for unlimited everything. I can even tether my laptop no problem (was hitting speeds of around 10Mbs down). This is on my HTC One X, but it shouldn't make a difference no matter what the device.

well, I was looking into the $50 plan that T-Mobile offers but they say that the first 100mb are 4g speeds and that the rest are 3g I guess. Does anyone have this plan ? if so, what are those speeds like ?
There's a $30 plan with 5gb of 4g before they throttle, unlimited text, and 100 minutes of talk time.

I agree 100 minutes is pushing it.
I haven't had problems streaming Music on Straight Talk for the past two months here in Washington State.
Have you considered Solavei or Simple Talk? Both run on T-Mo's network but have better definitions of Data Usage.
I'd suggest porting or obtaining a Google Voice number and handing that out and using the call forwarding function. So if you have to jump to a different carrier, you're not bound to their number or deal with porting your number multiple times.

Well in terms of call conditional forwarding, I read that straight talk doesn't support it. I think that ideally I'd go with the "monthly 4g" $50 plan T-Mobile offers. I wish I knew how fast the 3g service is after the 100mb

I just bought a Solavei SIM for the following reasons:
- If you want to go with an MVNO in the US, you'll want to go with one that's using T-Mobile's frequencies for the DC-HSPA+ (42Mbps), which Solavei does
- $49/mo unlimited calling/texts/data
- Interesting referral program from which you can actually make money
If you live in an area with good T-Mobile coverage, I'd highly recommend this route.
This is the video I saw here on XDA that helped me decide.

Very interested in this but... Is there a fine print?
What CAN'T YOU do on this network?

Not sure... My (admittedly hasty) research hasn't found anything out of the ordinary, except for the 4gb cap on HSPA+ speeds..
I think a lot of people are turned off by the idea of the referral program.. I found a lot of people claiming it was a scam, but I haven't found anything negative about their actual service. I suppose there's always the risk of an MVNO going under unexpectedly?
I'm not too sure, but I'll be sure to share my findings with the community once I get started on the service.

Though that sounds like a good deal, I can't deal with 100 minutes. I could use Groove IP but that is too much of a hassle, wouldn't you agree?

According to a post on Facebook from Groove IP, its not working on 4.2 Jellybean. They are working on a fix for it. Not sure if Talkatone is working on 4.2.
If 100 minutes isn't enough for you, I would recommend Straight Talk, as I believe it offers the choice of an At&t or T-mobile SIM and it's $45 for unlimited everything (with an unofficial data cap) as a few posters already mentioned.
Once my existing contract is over, I'm actually going to port my At&t number to Google Voice so that I can switch between prepaid SIMs at will without having to tell everyone my new number each time I do so. As I see it, the point of prepaid is to be able to leave when needed, and Google Voice offers that convenience (especially with the great Android app).

Well in terms of call conditional forwarding, I read that straight talk doesn't support it. I think that ideally I'd go with the "monthly 4g" $50 plan T-Mobile offers. I wish I knew how fast the 3g service is after the 100mb

The "Call Forwarding" Is not done through Straight Talk. You would add the phone number StraightTalk provides you to the Phone Forwarding List Of GoogleVoice account. Then give your friends/family/Ex-Wifes the Google Voice number, and when they call, it will ring your phone... So that if you do get a Carrier (ie StraightTalk) and they cancel your service, or you choose to find a different Carrier then you won't have to give out another number, people can continue to use the GoogleVoice number.
And there is nothing StraightTalk can do about that, since they really have no way of know 'cause the call is just routed through Google servers to your phone.
In response to your Original Post... I've used StraightTalk for nearly 1 yr and have never had an issue with Streaming any type of content...
I actually have to StraightTalk Sim card in a GSM Dongle that I use for my laptop... Still getting good speeds, have yet to be "Throttled", and service has not been disconnected due to streaming/data usage.
This thread has a wealth of knowledge in it...use it.
