Rooted but no root explorer. - Epic 4G General

OK. I've been rooted for a while to make use of the tether. I'm on clockwork mod 2.5.1. I need to put apps back on to update to froyo but I can't get to the root explorer. I feel like a moron.

Have you downloaded the Root Explorer Application from the market already? Can you see the icon in your app drawer?
EDIT: Or are you just wanting to get into CWM to flash the apps back by installing a zip from your SD card?

No. I thought it was a part of the cwm. Any suggestions on which one I should get?

Root explorer is good for deleting the apps. To put them back, You need to either A) flash them back with CWM or B) use ODIN or the Samsung.exe program to take it back to stock. (unrooted)
I will go ahead and say now if you are trying to get the update from the carrier, you may indeed need to ODIN back to stock (unrooted).
But just so you have the info...
If you are already rooted with CWM (as you stated you are in the OP).. you need to simply access the CWM program by booting into recovery.
-Turn off your phone.
-Boot into recovery by holding <power><camera><volume down> all at the same time
-Choose apply zip from sd card
-choose the zip file that has all the apps you want back. (obviously you will need to have that zip file saved to your SD. I know its readily available in these here forums.)
Hope that helps. Cheers!

You could also push it to your phone using terminal emulator (on your phone) or adb (on your computer)

I downloaded Super Manager from market and worked like a charm.

Removing lag fix

I applied ryanzas lag fix and want to remove it quickly. Will formatting my phone via settings remove it? Does this remove root because I want to keep that.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
What version of his lag fix did you apply? You could just use the unlagfix option if you used the market version or the one click.
I did the original the one that required a computer. Can't get to a computer for like couple of days and wondering if I can just remove it doing that method.
Yes formatting your phone.still remove it

I believe if you download the lagfix from the market, you can uninstall it. It gives me an option to remove it.
Search for "lag fix" and you'll find it in the market.

This will only work for lagfix V1+ If I remember correctly. I had installed the one click alpha version via adb and wasn't able to uninstall using the OCLF app. I had to do a complete wipe to get rid of it. The unlagfixme didn't work for me. I installed the app to make life a lil more simple after my wipe.

Do a titanium back up of all of your apps, flash the vibrant stock firmware, or even the new leaked one found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=780935
Than use titanium to restore all your stuff, and you will have successfully removed it no matter the version you had used.
I have to go back to odin? You sure the format won't work?

If you did the computer one, you can undo it the same you you applied it, by clicking the file that says "undolagfix" or something similar.
I also installed OCLF but the market version and then I undone everything... But I noticed I still have update.zip should I delete it? Did stock vibrant come with update.zip?

You should be able to download the CWM Rom Manager from the market. Then select "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" and you should be good to go.

I guess I recall having a problem with it at first too. Turns out superuser was prompting for root rights but wasn't displaying on top of the CWM screen. I think I just tried it until one time SU came up properly, then the flash worked.

Easiest way to root vibrant

]Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
I am not taking credit for anything
I will upload the apk oclf or one click lag fix app. Once this app is installed select root device then click fire it up and once done reboot into recovery and select reinstall packages. that's it, you're rooted, please anyone who does this save the apk to your computer or sd card on your phone so you can always root easily or help someone else if need be. if you try to download this app from the market it no longer has the root option. this is the original apk and EASIEST way to root your vibrant
Or you could just download it from the market...where it has been for almost as long as its been created.

you can't get it from the market anymore... something about the app apparently violated google terms so he had to take it down.
you can download Z4 root from places around the internet(search), put that on your internal SD and run it. It takes even fewer steps to gain root access
I've never understood why people find this easier than downloading a file and putting that file on the root of your internal...
Does this method work for the people who used mini kies to get stock froyo? Didn't know how this played with the 3E stock recovery.
Well I have tried the stock froyo from mini keys and personally I didn't like it. But every time I've odined back to stock 2.1 update 1 firmware, I'm rooted and back on a custom rom in minutes. And if theres an easier way to root have at it, this is just the method I use and has worked every time for me.

CWM for 2.2

I just rooted my 2.2 vibrant! (came stock with 2.2) ! now im trying to flash clockworkmod but i get this error when i re-installl packages in the vibrant recovery screen.??
Can someone please show me a step by step on how to probprly make a 2.2 vibrant recongnize the clockwork recovery screen?!
You would have to ODIN to a ROM that comes with the 2E recover such as (eugenes froyo that doesnt brick) or a kernel that you can odin that has a modified 3E recovery that disables signature checking. Once you do that you can flash a kernel that has clockwork embeded into it such as overstock, tigers blood, voodoo, eugenes dead horse.
i think i need a step by step way too noob to understand what 3e and 2e is and what is ODIN i hear soo much about it! I bought the phone with 2.2 already on it so i havnt used ODIN at all to update my firmware!
Read the vibrant bible for about a week then try messing with your phone.

your easiest method to get CWM working (and i'm assuming your end goal is to flash a rom) is to odin BACK to JFD (the stock shipped 2.1 rom for the vibrant) and then flash your rom.
There is no other easier way to do it (especially since you're not really sure what odin is, so using the other method to replace the stock 3e recovery with a fixed 3e recovery requires SOME technical knowledge of mounting partitions and getting root using superoneclick).
I sEE its starting to make sense now! After i switch back toJFD using ODIN will i have to re root my phone or does it stay rooted?

if you're end goal is to flash a rom, and you've already used CWM before using the update.zip method, unless you've deleted the update.zip from your sdcard, there is no need to root when using 2e recover (the stock 2.1 recovery) to get CWM working. You will have to manually boot up the phone into recovery (using vol+ and vol- and power) and then reinstall packages.
Thanks alot i appreciate the help! Ill try this after work and report back if i had any more issues.
ODIN a stock+voodoo kernel, reboot to recovery, flash a rom with cwm

If you're entire goal is to get root in order to flash a Rom, why go through all the trouble (which by the confusion your having, there will be) just to flash a custom Rom?
The easiest way is to odin jfd to your phone. Then put the cwm update.zip on your internal sd card as well as your Rom of choice and flash that way.
The way that you're currently wanting to do requires you to get at the very least temp root, mount /system as rw, the copy over a modified recovery file, all assuming you don't run into errors about having enough free space on /system.
Now, which way seems easier?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Wouldnt it be ezr to download the recovery 3e.zip to your download file on phone directly from the internet, then copy the zip file and move to the appropriate file on phone useing a file manager ..then just robooting to recovery reonstallingand completly avoiding a computer
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Well, you have to have root first. To get rust on your 2.2 rom requires a computer and there's also the fact that you may not even have enough room on your /system partition. If it were easier, the easier method would have been told to you within the first 3 posts.

the info below is on page 12 on the above link F.Y.I
1. get superoneclick root application (its on the forums just search for it.)
2. plug phone into computer then open superoneclick application
3. click on shell root (i used psneuter method) in the application and let it do its thing
4. Once you get a message that you have shell root, download the 3e recovery from OP and unzip to desktop. (DO NOT restart phone!!!)
5. run the .BAT file in the unzipped folder.
6. go through the steps and choose to restart when done (it will show as recommended)
You are now done!

Stuck in stock

I used Odin to return to stock and when I reinstall packages I get root but no new recovery. Still stuck in 2e unable to flash anything. I have done this many times before with no issues. Anyone have suggestions? I don't want to be stuck with stock! :'(

Take the SU.zip off your internal and put the CWR.zip on there and reinstall twice. Since you are flashing and only getting root and north custom recovery, that makes me think you are not flashing the CWR zip.

Well ive never heard of a cwr.zip. nor one called cwr.zip that is recognized as an update.zip for reinstall packages so good luck.

I think my dropbox links might be working now. Go to my sig and click on CWR and download it. Open folder and put the update.zip (it is 1.7mb and make sure it is labeled Update.zip and not CWR.zip) on the root of your Internal_sd so it the only thing labeled update.zip on there. Make sure you have whatever ROM you are going to flash on your External SD card and know where it is. If you have the Superuser.zip on your internal, then move it off.
Boot into stock recovery (blue) and scroll down to Reinstall Packages. Hit it and let it cycle through. It will come back to stock recovery (blue) . Scroll down and hit it again. It will cycle again but this time it will go from blue to green (CWR) . Scroll down to Install from SD and find your ROM you wanted to flash and hit it. Follow whatever ROM's OP.
If for some reason my links aren't working, go to Noob guide stickied on Q&A and download Option B and follow same directions as above.
