[Q] faux's kernel or cyanogenmod 7 rc3's stock kernel? - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm torn between the two kernel's. Through your own experience, which kernel is better for performance and which for battery life? with the cm7 stock kernel i can get around 2700 in quadrant at 1.5ghz but i heard people were getting scores in the 3000's with the faux kernel?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
P.S. why do i seem to get lower scores on performance governor than ondemand?

Faux is what I use. Don't base your phone on quadrant. Its like cake. Looks delucous.. but the cake is a lie.
Its a general idea of a phones performance.. not the end all be all.
Both work well... but faux has newer wifi drivers that greatly increase range and performance.

as stated above Quadrant Standard is just a starting point. It lead nothing to the true facts of how well a phone preforms.
Couple of things to consider.
1) Zinx has created CM7 around the kernel that is installed with the ROM. If you need help you will get more help directly from the developer using their kernels, This goes for any ROM.
2) If you opt'd into the feedback program you will be doing so with false information. You'll be giving feedback based on "product a" when in all honesty your using "product b"
3) overclocking the phone is not always the best thing to do. Sure it's nice to show off and say "hey looky what i can do" but when the rubber meets the road their is no real benefit other than cooking the battery. And keep in mind what happens to things when they get hot, they expand. And when you are pumping that much extra into and out of a processor they will expand which will wear and tear on the motherboard and solder joints.
Personally i'd just keep the stock kernel @ keep it at most 1017 unless you plan on showing off, then moving back ASAP. and for what it's worth i typically run my MyTouch @ 768Mhz.

1. I want to underclock to 768 as well (never messed with CPU settings before) on CM7 RC3 using the system built in setting not set cpu, have you seen any performance degradation?
2. when I revert back to stock from my nandroid, would the CPU be throttled back to default settings or will it stay at 768?

1) on my phone, i use 768Mhz day in and day out, Fruit Ninja, Angry birds, Browser, dialer, navigating the phone in general everything performs EXTREMELY well. I've not had any complaints. just go to settings > cyanogen > performance > CPU > max > 768. Since Cyanogen is a lightweight ROM it doesn't have to push though all the bloat that MySense brings so we can scale it back and still get good results.
i personally do not care for Quadrant scores. but i know some people live by them so i've attacthed a 768Mhrz and a 1016Mhrz Quad score. The names will be the set speed.
2) the CPU speed will revert back to what ever you have it set as on that ROM. So if you left it 1017 in your Nanadroid it'll be 1017 when you flash the restore.

[REQUEST] Tegra GPU OC....

Hey everyone...I tell ya, I sure am enjoying all these awesome custom roms and kernels. Great job to all the developers here, putting in the blood, sweat, and tears for the advancement of the community, thank you so much. One feature that I saw in a Xoom build was the GPU overclocked, and while I'm sure it won't interest everyone, and there is probably only little gain to be had from it, I would love to have the option to oc the CPU and the GPU for the highest performance possible...please. Well I think that covers it unless someone else shares my desire to see this feature. Thanks for all your work and consideration XDA and have a great day.

oc-ing the gpu doesnt get you anything... gpu is default 200mhz 2d with 300mhz in 3d and it can be uped to 250mhz 2d and 400mhz 3d but it cant be software controlled and it will eat more power...
and no oc-ing the cpu doesn't oc the gpu, its a separate part of the tegra2 processor
Hey Thor, thanks for joining the conversation. Based on what youve seen so far, how well are the tegra GPU cores being utilized? Suffice to say I've pulled off insane desktop GPU overclocks that showed almost nill gain with drivers that werent mature in which the GPU cores werent being loaded past 50% . I realize that the tegra is a horse of a different color, but isnt it still affected by the specific driver optimizations, hence the THD enhancements? Just out of curiosity as I very much trust your experience. I am still interested in trying it with definitive comparisons to follow...well about as definitive as synthetic benchmarks can be anyway.
I just saw that you have a new beta... Yay. I cant wait to give it a whirl.
I have been over locked for a little while. Max I have done is 1506 but it tends to be slightly unstable. I run 1400 now and haven't had any issues. biggest difference I notice is home screen transitions load fast and don't lag and programs load much quicker. there doesnt seem to be any games that will push the CPU hard so I don't notice much of a difference there.

I've had 1600mhz going strong with no instability, benchmark after benchmark, the only issue I've had is the device shutting down when left alone for too long, but I consider that a useful standard function. Otherwise 1600 performance has been rock solid. I decided to take it upon myself to take this girl apart' clean the CPU off, remove the thermal pad, and apply some as5....though the chip didnt really run very hot to begin with. Now until I have the option to go for 1800mhz, I'd like to see where the max threshold is for cpu/gpu oc.
I have mine overclocked also at 1600.. Runs very stable at this speed and benchmarks not too bad:

Can only the 3D Clocks be altered without touching 2D? If yes can you make such a version of the ........... that "nobody" knows anything about?

Very nice quadrant score man, I used to score alot higher until I updated to stock 3.1+ updates. It seems like the higher my OS version number gets, the lower my synthetic performance gets overall.

that's what mine did. it would reboot while sleeping. sometimes it would be 3 or 4 times in an hour.

Umm, what rom do you guys run for this? I'm on rooted and CWMd stock 3.1 rom. Can't find a OC kernel for it. Only one I can find is for ASUS based roms. I prefer to keep stock rom if it's possible.
ME: Asus A500 Iconia USA wifi only. HC 3.1

You should try richardtrip's kernel. His kernel is keep updating Very good performance and stability.
thats the kernel i am using o/c 1400 works very well. you can find it in the development thread.

Thanks! Works great. Do you feel the HoneyVillian rom runs faster with the v2.4 Kernel or about the same as stock Acer 3.1 HC rom with v2.4 Kernel?
So far I can keep stable at 1.5 after 2 hours of use. It's also slept for 30 mins and seems ok at that too.
Also what kind of Scaling do you guys use? Ondeman, Interactive? On my phone I use ondemand.

Hi Everyone, Arrow here and this is my guide to find what is the best aosp setup for your evo or android. It is true when people say "every phone is different." However there is an average of people that get similar results. At the moment people have different interest such as some people want performance and some want to improve their battery life. Of course certain people want both but only some get both.
*Remember what i put here is an average and may be different on your evo*
AOSP GB ROM'S: Ok so to start off, these are aosp roms still being updated as of now.
CyanogenMod 7 (CM7) - The most famous aosp rom out there, all or almost all other aosp roms are based off of this rom. This rom has a stable rom and experimental nightly builds. Anyone will tell you that you can't go wrong by choosing this rom. and believe me you will enjoy it.

Miui - This rom has the longest battery life and is very customizable. This rom is based off of CM7 and is an excelent rom. However unlike CM7 this rom does not have 4g so if you are willing to sacrifice 4g then believe me this is your rom.

Gingerbread Evo Deck - Ok so although CM7 is amazing decks gb rom has said to be the exact same thing but giving off better battery life. other then that it is pretty much the same thing with some minor tweaks and some bloat ware removed.

Xplod E4G - Team Nocturnal designed this rom and it is pretty much CM7 with the Sony Launcher + their apps. This rom will give your phone a nice cool feel that other people don't have. If you like a lot of eye candy then get this rom because it is CM7 just with a different look and feel.

ICS(mod7) - Team Blaze designed this rom and you can consider this rom like Xplod E4G, a rom just like CM7 with some minor tweaks but with a different look and feel. None the less this rom has something very special this is the closest rom to being like ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich). I 100% support this rom because they are doing the best they can to make this rom look and run as smooth as ICS. so if you want to look like your ahead of the game definitely get this rom.

AOSP GB Kernels: These are three kernels that i know of, if you know of more please let me know and i will add them.
Tiamat 4.1.0 - This is the latest kernel made by Tiamat and this is the only aosp kernel still being updated. This kernel on average gives people great performance but lacks on battery life. The main Governor for this kernel is SmartassV2 which is a balanced governor, good to turn on your phone and good to use on a normal day to day bases. For this kernel i do recommend using this governor. It does have SBC and Non-SBC kernels. *Side Note* (Some people say Tiamat 3.3.7 works better for them and is also known as the LEE Kernel because it was awesome like Bruce Lee and looks like Lee backwards [337])

Savaged-Zen - This kernel is no longer being updated, however it is still amazing this kernel seems to be Tiamat's competition. Where Tiamat lacks on battery Savaged-Zen does not. However it's performance is not as good as Tiamat. This Kernel comes in two version BFS (Brain F***ed Scheduler) and CFS (Completely Fair Scheduler). BFS is said to give better performance and CFS is the normal kernel. This kernel only comes with SBC however you may download "SVZ Manager" which will allow you to turn SBC on or off. The main governor for this kernel i believe is on demand However i use smartass and a lot of people us InteractiveX.

GoDm0de - This Kernel was made by toastcfh and is no longer being updated. It is non-sbc and in my opinion definitely the best non-sbc kernel. This Kernel has insane battery life and a pretty good performance. If you do not want to use an sbc kernel i recommend for you to 100% use this kernel. The Governor for this kernel is set on on demand (i think) however i got the best battery/performance using Interactive.

AOSP ICS ROM'S:
ICS rom by: the_Plattypus and it is still in Alpha testing. however the development for this rom is moving really fast so hopefully a beta will come soon.

ICS-evo-deck: This Rom is by kushdeck, After testing out Decks ICS Pre-Alpha 4 & 7 rom i conclude that although it is a alpha it can easily be used as a day to day rom. extremely fast and very snappy. only thing that i found not working was the camera. (Now on Alpha5)

Rom Manager/Kernel Manager:
Rom Manager: This is an app from the android market and is extremely useful for pretty much anything. you can back up your rom, you may go into boot loader and you can check if certain roms such as "CM7 Nightlies" have been updated. However people do prefer Amon Ra for flashing, which is another plus of Rom Manager it allows you to flash alternative recovery, which will flash Amon Ra for you.
Kernel Manager: This app was working before but has stopped now, however if it does start working again what it had was pretty much all the kernels that you needed for any rom. this app would allow you to flash a new kernel immediately by going to the kernel you want to flash.

Q: What is SBC?
A: SBC stands for super battery charger. SBC is trickle charging, It stops your battery from dropping from 100% to 90% right when you take it off the charger. Some say that it harms your battery but i haven't seen any harm and plus it only costs $5 to get a new battery on Amazon.

ondemand - Available in most kernels, and the default governor in most kernels. When the CPU load reaches a certain point (see "up threshold" in Advanced Settings), ondemand will rapidly scale the CPU up to meet demand, then gradually scale the CPU down when it isn't needed. - SetCPU website
conservative - Available in some kernels. It is similar to the ondemand governor, but will scale the CPU up more gradually to better fit demand. Conservative provides a less responsive experience than ondemand, but can save battery. - SetCPU website
performance - Available in most kernels. It will keep the CPU running at the "max" set value at all times. This is a bit more efficient than simply setting "max" and "min" to the same value and using ondemand because the system will not waste resources scanning for the CPU load. Interactive - The 'interactive' governor has a different approach. Instead of sampling the cpu
at a specified rate, the governor will scale the cpu frequency up when coming
out of idle. When the cpu comes out of idle, a timer is configured to fire
within 1-2 ticks. If the cpu is 100% busy from exiting idle to when the timer
fires then we assume the cpu is underpowered and ramp to MAX speed.
If the cpu was not 100% busy, then the governor evaluates the cpu load over the
last 'min_sample_rate' (default 50000 uS) to determine the cpu speed to ramp down
to.

SMARTASS GOVERNOR - is based on the concept of the interactive governor.
I have always agreed that in theory the way interactive works - by taking over the idle loop - is very attractive. I have never managed to tweak it so it would behave decently in real life. Smartass is a complete rewrite of the code plus more. I think its a success. Performance is on par with the "old" minmax and I think smartass is a bit more responsive. Battery life is hard to quantify precisely but it does spend much more time at the lower frequencies.
Smartass will also cap the max frequency when sleeping to 245Mhz (or if your min frequency is higher than 245 - why?! - it will cap it to your min frequency). Lets take for example the 998/245 kernel, it will sleep at 245. No need for sleep profiles any more![/QUOTE]

A: No you don't have to go back to sense to do these and you don't have to do these because Rom's will come with what you need. Q: Does HDMI mirroring work on these roms?
A: As of this moment Miui and CM7 both have HDMI mirroring working, and sense all the other ones are cm7 with some tweaks they as well have HDMI working however from what i have read the only one that has not had problems with HDMI is Decks Gingerbread Rom
Q: Are all other major features (4G (except for Miui), bluetooth, front & rear camera, GPS, apps such as Netflix, Skype, Google Voice, Sprint Visual voicemail) all working at least as well as on a Sense or stock ROM?

Q:My wifi is connecting/disconnecting after a second, what should i do?
A: This answer was given to me by "teh roxxorz." This has nothing to do with your rom or kernel, do this:
Back up everything into Titanium Backup
Boot into recovery
wipe cache, Dalvik, and pretty much everything
reflash your rom,kernel and gapps (or if you would like to check out some other roms and kernels just click on the link in my sig)
once you've set up your phone download Titanium Backup from the market
in titanium backup restore all your apps ONLY!!! (don't get apps w/ data - only get apps, and do not get system data)
after this your wifi should be working just fine

A: Yes, This answer was given to me by teh roxxorz:
You need to flash a sprint sense rom. I emphasize sprint because it won't work on the sense 3.5 roms, as they're all ports of other non sprint roms.
1. Flash sense rom
2. Obtain your msl, download msl reader from market, use it, write it down
3. type in ##3282# , input your msl (you can get this from the app msl reader)
4. Click edit mode > advanced
5. Scroll down to HHTD proxy port and address
6. Change the proxy port to 0 and proxychange the address to 0.0.0.
Q: How can I fix my GPS?
A: This answer was given to me by teh roxxorz:
- flash a sense rom
- open up the dialer
- Type ##GPSCLRX# or ##4772579#
- Your enter your MSL at the prompt
- Your phone will soon reboot > done

Lagfree - like the performance governor. It will scale the cpu to higher frequencies when needed, but not to 100% like performance, so you'll get a lil better battery out of it

i actually did, it runs really smooth and i believe atm everything is working. if there is anything wrong with it, then it was something cm7 did because it is the same thing with a few tweaks and a different look.

Why do YOU Overclock (or refuse to) on the Atrix?

After the release of Clemsyn's 1.6 GHz Kernel for CM7 based ROMs last night, I immediately switched to it just to see.
But before that I was running Faux123 1.3 GHz.
I'm keeping the Clemsyn kernel for now, simply because I can. My phone can run it with little difficulty thus far and I have a profile to lower the max freq when the CPU gets to a certain temperature. I think I went with about 65 Celsisus.
Before I switched back to CM7 (or rather Neutrino) I was using Wet Dream. I OCed to 1.45 then in attempt to compensate for only half decent webtop performance.
But now I really only do it because I can. Whenever possible, my phone is on the lapdock since I like to HDMI mirror. Battery is not a concern since the lapdock charges the phone and I pretty much always keep the lapdock charger on hand in my bag.
I just thought it would be an interesting subject for the community to discuss as I'm sure it's something that a number of us haven't even thought of and I bet a good number of us fall into the because I can or bragging rights category.
Specific instances of problems OCing helped with in x app or y app might make someone else want to OC whereas someone who doesn't OC might persuade a user like myself to drop it for amazing battery ETC.

Why I DO OC.
Right now I have my Atrix OC'ed at 1.45. I'm currently running Alien ROM Build #4.
The CPU has never gotten past ~55ยบ C.
I also have 2 profiles set
1 for Screen off - 800 MHz max.
1 for Battery< 10% -216 MHz max.
This paired with Alien ROM and LP has left me with a buttery smooth experience.
Is the 1.6 OC kernel worth giving a shot? Or does it make the CPU run excessively hot?
EDIT: I didn't really address battery life. I don't notice a huge decrease in battery life, I'm a pretty heavy user- SMS, Web, Video streaming, Facebook, Twitter. Over all OC'ing is definitely worth it to me.
I like to keep mine overclocked because it seems snapier. I use faux 1.45 and its great. Ive noticed clem's likes to make my phone very hot when running video or games and has actually shut my phone down due to heat. If I run clems I like to drop the overclock with setcpu to around 1.3 so it doesnt shut down but seems to get way hotter than faux's. Anything over 1.5 is just going to cause damage to peoples phones and IMO it should not be used so lightly.
I'm OC'd to 1.45ghz I do it for performance and those random times I need to benchmark I want to try 1.5-6 but I can't seem to get them to boot with the ICS mod2 cm7 so till cm9 or neutrino ill just float about with what I have

1.3 is plenty for the Atrix. Even Faux 1.0 is fine. Its a phone, not a PC.

i honestly haven't been able to really tell a difference between 1.0 and 1.3GHz in most of my applications. it definitely doesn't help with system slowdown due to live wallpapers, which is a disappointment.

Haha, I was in that boat before I switched to HDMI mirroring coupled with VNC or Splashtop (when applicable) from experience, I can tell why Webtop users want OC. You can turn your phone into such a useful computer, and then it falls flat on its face because the inner-workings aren't streamlined. The extra power DOES help in that situation.
But in my actual experience, I haven't seen many realworld benefits past 1.2.
Especially since 1.6 kept eventually shutting down on me after about an hour (assuming there is the same issue as in Clemsyn 1.5, setting your max to a lower frequency than 1.6 won't stick so my temperature profile wouldn't actually work)
My "because I can" mindset is going to leave me stuck on 1.45 though most likely. I keep it maxed at 1.2(or is it 1.1? I'm not using the kernel right now) and then have a profile to ramp it up to 1.45 when it's on the charger (aka my lapdock)
I don't think it is quite the same for Blur based ROMs, but on CM7 1.0 seems perfectly adequate for the Atrix. Even at it's stock speed, it is snappy.

I dont overclock. I used to be at 1.3ghz, but I didnt see a big enough difference to keep it. At least on CM7, the Atrix is plenty fast on stock speed.
I overclock, but I wait for thoroughly tested kernels before doing so. Right now I'm with faux's v023r @ 1.3 Ghz. I'll try Clemsyn's after its second or third "redesign" or bugfix.
I stick to optimal battery life kernels rather than performance (faux 123 0.2.3 being the one I'm currently on and most likely will be for the foreseeable future)
Also I can't imagine performance possibly getting any quicker or running programs any faster than they already are on the atrix.
Honestly, I never understood why people oc their phone, especially the Atrix. I mean the phone is already fast being that it is 1Ghz dual core. Plus from what I have seen, the Atrix overheats like crazy with the stock frequency so why would you want to increase that even more, so it explodes? I use my phone to mostly play 3D games and I have never encountered any lag or low fps whenever I play games.

The Atrix is plenty fast already. I can understand if you OC a HTC Magic, or a Hero; but there's no real need to do so on the Atrix.
Idk I see a difference on any launcher when I flip through pages and through apps. 1.3 or 1.45. But I def notice the difference in snappyness.

95% of the time I overclock I do it for getting awesome benchmark scores that I can admire. 5% of the time I do it when playing 3D games like Fruit Ninja, It seems a lot smoother to me. But I hardly ever do it because it sucks the battery down so fast, so usually I'm at 1ghz. Also it's just kind of cool to see the the potential the phone has when overclocking.
i used faux's kernel to overclock to 1.3 for a few months but i didnt really see any difference except when i run quadrant or how my phone got hotter than stock when under load. another thing that annoyed me with faux's kernel was constantly losing widgets on reboot. i use two batteries so i reboot pretty often.
I used faux 23r 1.4GHz with setCPU profiles.
Profiles clamped speed to 1ghz at cpu temp of 50degc and 800mhz at 60degc.
Most noticeable difference was in k9 mail, indexing and searching were slightly improved.
I ran it so I would get a short boost if the cpu was cold.

On my old and feeble Hero I had to OC, if I wanted it to run fine, however I never felt the need to OC my Atrix. it has so much juice in it without OC, making it useless to squeeze the battery for the extra 0.2-0.5 GHz. Moreover, since we have no real ICS, our CPU runs freely and waste energy for nothing, so OC it will just make it run ever faster for nothing (In Hebrew there is a saying- running full throttle on neutral ).
I used to run Faux123 1.0Ghz kernel just to UV the device, but since I flashed weekly 6 I use the stock kernel, and it runs great, no overheating, and extremely stable (What cannot be said on UV kernels...)
The only time i oc is when using webtop, that extra speed makes a difference. The rest of the its running at 1ghz and seems plenty

Trinity Kernel...1400mhz max?

I recently flashed the newest Trinity Kernel on my Nexus 7. I still have the stock ROM. I tried to tweak the CPU settings with ROM Toolbox and the most I can overclock is 1400mhz. Why can't I overclock to 1600? Is it because of the stock ROM? I'm looking into Glazed Jelly Bean as a custom ROM but I'm not sure I want or need to use a custom ROM at this point.
Any suggestions?
Because he dropped the Max. You probably flashed A111 correct? That's a TSVZ meaning it is slightly over clocked and undervolted kernel meant for battery not for performance.

Mildly on topic question ... do you notice any imporvments with overclocking? My first experience with overclocking as on my Hero, and then Galaxy S1, but this N7 just feels so fast i cant see overclocking making it any smoother? lol

Ok, I got the a96 and I've flashed it...
Is there a detailed changelog for each version? The a111 said it was a 1600mhz kernel so I don't understand why it was dropped down to 1400. That's where my confusion was.
I did notice some increase in speed at 1400. I was having some stuttering issues with Dead Trigger and Minecraft PE, and they were less with the 1400. I've got it running at 1600 now but I don't know what it will do to the battery or how well it will perform. I'll find out later. I've run through the battery pretty quickly today, but I was tinkering with it A LOT so it's not accurate.
What kind of tweaks could I do using Rom Toolbox that would help me maximize my battery while overclocking to 1.6?
Dont over clock.. i dont even see a need to. I use the ondemand gov which stutters a little but using interactive clears that up. Also using the CFQ IO as it is the stock IO used. Its stock so its gotta be good . Also you should turn F-Sync off that helps quite a bit. Also you could toggle auto hotplug and make it only run two cores while gaming and then turn it back on when finished so that way it will hotplug cores as it sees necessary. You could also up the voltages a little bit, some CPU's dont like the lower voltage and that will cause stuttering and glitching just up them by 25mV and see if it clears if not try another 25mV.
I will try those things, but I really want to play with overclocking and learn what happens. This is my first Android device so I'm experimenting and playing around.
But I have one more question...I've overclocked to 1.5...I found 1.6 to be the same as 1.5. But it seems that after an hour or so, it resets to 1.3. in ROMToolbox. Why is this?
Don't use rom toolbox. Use the Trinity app. It sticks just fine for me. Besides you support the dev to make better kernels.

Overclocking past 1.4 Ghz doesn't result in any major usability improvements. I've gone up to 1.7 Ghz and the only thing it does is make my tablet really warm and unstable. All you really need for improving system performance is I/O tweaks to speed up app and page loading, and a little bit of GPU overclocking to help with the transitional effects.
and, to be honest, depending which trinity kernel im using, im using either 1100 or 1150mhz mostly. on a111 im using 1100mhz and on a96 i used 1150mhz. with those speeds everything is still fast but a bit better on battery

[Q] Performance difference from different kernels on different roms

Hi,
I've noticed a huge performance difference between kernels and the roms they're used with.
For example:
I was using AOKP and Franco kernel and got around 20000 antutu points, I've switched to Carbon Rom (because of the build in pie control) and Franco kernel and only get around 13000 points, that's a huge difference.
As a test I've installed Matr1x-kenel on Carbon and get around 21000 points.
I really like Franco-kernel and all the tweaks it offers but don't like the huge drop in benchmarks, I know benchmarks are not a real representation of actual performance but it's still a big difference.
This also occurs in Quadrant and Geekbench.
So my question is why does this happen?
Aren't most roms supposed to be compatible with most kernels?

I can't answer your question as to why that happens (no doubt someone else will) but you seriously should just stop bothering with benchmarks and use your own eyes and experiences as a measure of how good a kernel/ROM is. I doubt you could find a kernel which made the phone visibly slow or that affected usability so I don't see what your concern is tbh.

some roms include many optimizations(like skia/dalvik, krait optimizations, and others), while some dont. its not thekernel thats crapping out on you, its the rom.

your eyes can be decieved.. they can see whats happening in the ui for example, but you can not see the complex calculations that are being performed or how your cpu is really performing. you can have a slow device whos ui is quick.
OK, I can understand that not all roms are equal but why does changing the kernel have such a seamingly big impact?
If a rom is bad to begin with it should stay that way no matter what kernel you use with it.
Offcourse what do I know, I'm not a developer so my knowledge on the subject is limited.
I'm just trying to understand what's going on...

kernels vary too, and they impact greatly because they control just about everything in the phone, kinda like a brain. since the kernels themselves vary, one kernel might be better set up than another to deal with certain code from a certain rom. and then also, every phone reacts differently to each kernel(and roms to a point). thats why its recommended to try out different kernels, combos. only then you can find the perfect combo for you/your device. what works great for somebody, can be lousy for another.
OK, so if i understand correctly it boils down to this:
1. You can do benchmarks but don't base your opinion on just the benchmark scores.
2. Roms can vary greatly in optimizations and efficiency of coding.
3. Kernels can also vary greatly in optimizations and efficiency of coding.
4. There's no such thing as a "best for everyone rom/kernel combo".
5. Not all roms/kernels play equally nice with each other.
6. Play around with as many roms / kernels as possible and decide what works best for ME based on MY experience.

Its been well over a year since I ran any benchmark of any sort but I tested Franco and carbon because that's what I'm on and you mentioned low scores. I'm on Franco m3 with some tweaked settings and carbon nightly from 7-5. Antutu gave me 20636. I'm using stock CPU and GPU frequencies.

Maybe the nightly Carbon rom is more optimized?
I'm on Carbon 1.7 Stable and used Franco nightly 162 to test with.
When I benchmark I try to be as consistent as possible ie same temperature, performance governor, airplane mode etc.
I even cooled my Nexus in the freezer for some minutes to eliminate thermal throttling (yeah I know, watchout for condensation) but still got the same low scores.

It might be, I didn't do anything special. I left all my background apps running, didnt close anything in the recents, didn't cool the phone first. I just downloaded it and hit start. I use the interactive governor tweaked a bit, and I also tweaked the hotplug settings so it more readily onlines all 4 cores instead of waiting for some of the higher loads to trigger it.

Well, I had to try it myself so I did a factory reset, cleared system,data and dalvik, installed latest carbon nightly.
With stock kernel I almost reached 21000 points, with franco I barely get 17000 points.
Very strange...

I stand corrected, did a second benchmark and am now getting 20880 points...
are you benchmarking with your cpu speed benchmarked set as highest and lowest cpu speed? you should. if you dont put the same cpu speed as highest and lowest then itll scale up and down. if it scales, you dont actually know what speed its testing and it gives you inconsistamt scores. you want the cpu speed to be the same throughout the test.
When I benchmark I set the governor to performance, this should keep the cpu running at maximum speed without scaling unless I'm mistaking...

meh, performance is the worst for benchmarking. its such a deceiving name. try either ondemand or interactive. set your cpu speed to be the same high and low.
