[DISCUSS] Verizon's Xperia Play release date April 14 - Xperia Play General

Verizon’s Spring Roadmap Leaked, April Full of Androids with Samsung Droid Charge, Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, and HTC Droid Incredible 2 [EXCLUSIVE]
by Kevin Krause on March 30th, 2011 at 6:55 am
So you want to know when all those shiny 4G LTE handsets are actually launching on Verizon? A friendly neighborhood tipster has sent along Verizon’s upcoming roadmap for their Spring releases, and it’s chock full of Android. For starters, the Samsung 4G LTE phone we had believed would go under the Stealth name is once again confirmed as the Charge (though Droid Charge will be the final name) and pegged with a release date of April 7th. Also planned to launch on the same day is the rugged Casio Commando, which was shown off at CTIA to little excitement. Jump forward a week to April 14th and we have the release of the highly anticipated Sony Ericsson Xperia Play gaming smartphone. If that wasn’t enough Android goodness for April already, expect the HTC Droid Incredible right around the end of the month on the 28th.
Moving out of April, May should see its share of Android, as well. May 5th is given as the day we can expect the the 4G LTE LG Revolution , and the Motorola DROID BIONIC is loosely listed with a May release, as well. Also without certain dates but listed as launching in May (or later) are the Motorola Droid X 2 and, get this, the Samsung Galaxy S II. I don’t think we expected the US launch of the Galaxy S followup to come so soon, but Verizon is suggesting it might be so (unless they are simply suggesting the launch will come after May).
Whew, that was a lot. Did you take all that in? Verizon has a big couple of months ahead of them. Let’s just hope another Thunderbolt fiasco doesn’t push back these dates further than they need to go.
[Thanks, Thomas!]

It may just be that the SIM card slot is to support GSM networks if you travel abroad and not necessarily for LTE support. After all, this is how the BackBerry is sold on Verizon, isn't it?

if the verizon version does indeed have a sim for gsm network, im switching my personal line from at&t to it immediately... the sole reason im still at at&t is because i hate the droid 2 global and verizon phone does not have sim slot for me when i travel abroad

I'm not saying it's not a world phone, but it doesn't prove that it is one either.

Could also just be a place holder. No logic connected to it. I find this unlikely because its added cost to manufacture, but I find it unlikely to 4g because vzw and or SE would be all over this for a marketing perspective.
If it turns out to be a 4g sim, I'll eat my words and be the first inline to purchase this phone. Lol

It proves one of two things. One the xperia play for Verizon will work globally which means it will work on cdma and gsm networks. Or two, the xperia play for Verizon will be 4g and run on Verizon's LTE network. (which is the one I hope it is WOOO! but chances are its not)

The sprint site is down, (Tiered Data?)

After trying to go to MySprint to check my dad's upgrade status I noticed that the entire site appears to be down. I noticed yesterday that Sprint could be changing to tiered data today but I hope it's something else.

I think it is something more sinister, tiered data, look here.
Don't think this will affect me... but why would sprint end their unlimited everything when they put so much into it...
I don't think this nesescarily means the end of unlimited data. I think the everything plans will stay intact and these "buckets" will be small for dumb phone users who want smart phones but don't want to jump from a 69.99 family talk and text to a very expensive (in their eyes) 129.99 plus 10 dollars per smart phone.
A single bucket of say 5 gb for 30 would be a god way to update a 4 phone plan with 2 smartphone with out going to a everything data plan with 2 phones that don't use data. This might be a good way to even power your tablet ith internet instead of paying fcor an additional expensive data plan.
Remmber, this little internal document shows almost nothing. Let's not get all up in a bunch over something we don't ANY details on. I know sprint may have their hads up their asses when it comes to bringing in the popular devices with diverse selection, but they have always been pretty inovative on pricing.

+1 I so agree they are just starting to gain on the big 2 and if/when the Tmobile and Att merger happens they will make a killing. I think if they are going to do that they will not do away with unlimited that is there bread and butter.
Care for me to shed some light on this?
SNAP and FDT were scheduled for maintenance from 11:15pm to 10:15am CST. SNAP and FDT are our ordering systems. The Sprint store is down because everyone is effected by this. Customer care, NSS, and Account Services all cannot order any phones during this time.
We should be seeing the site come back up here very shortly. However, about the tiered data, from what I have read and heard from some of my other Sprint connections they are just making new cheaper plans for people who don't want to pay for unlimited 4G data.
And Sprint is doing this because of one reason, LTE. Remember what I said earlier? 80% of the Sprint towers by 2013 will have WiMax and LTE. They are redoing every single tower, one by one.

Not only that but the Author of that article says this almost certainly means... in other words he has no clue and is guessing. Plus Sprint did not comment. I believe others here are correct in assuming it is for those without some type of unlimited data plan and want to share data between other phones in their plan. If anything these "buckets" of sharing may have limits. But just use Bluetooth file share and no network data is used.

Keep in mind it was Clearwire that was expanding the network.
We know that Clearwire was switching to LTE and that Lightsquard's (LTE) name was thrown into the mix.
There was a rumor about Sprint buying Clearwire too.

Clear is in a funding issue. Will it is generating revenue it ran out of funds to massively expand without more funds.
That is the reason why it has stopped expanding.
A sprint acquisition would mean they could expand with the funds that Sprint has more readily available than Clear does right now.
Would that mean new devices or just an update to work with lte? If it went to lte.. otherwise, massive 4g expansion would ve cool too

Im thinking it will have something to do with their network capacity/bandwidth.
But The main thing will be the buying the rest of Clear. It is a very logical step.
plus if you didn't know they either pay Clear monthly or a one time fee for each 4g device they sell. technically they would save money as well as be able to funnel Clear up the arse with $$ better than how it is being funneled now. My bet is a full ownership and incorporation of Clear wire into SPRINT-nextel. Then phasing out IDEN and using spectrum for Clear if it is possible or Lightsquard.
maybe they will remove the 10 charge? LoL

WTF, where did the AT&T&TMO and Sprint come from, have you heard something I haven't heard, That would really suck getting sucked back into ATT tierd data plan they had pushed on me before I left
I for one, don't have much hope for anything useful. i've been going back and forth with sprint (phone, twitter, email, however i can get them to answer me) about my consistent lack of data. They never have anything helpful to say. To be honest, i'm about burned out on Sprint and their "announcements". Like the others said, that Kyocera Echo was like spitting in the face of your users. Utterly disappointing.
Seriously, short of an announcement that the wimax would actually work and that data would be useable, i don't care.

Sprint getting LTE Galaxy Nexus

Sprint IS getting an LTE Galaxy Nexus, and its their first LTE phone to be available.

I was about to mention the same thing! I still want to see the updated specs on this bad boy before getting too excited. If they're upping the processor, maybe they'll upgrade a few other things too, like the camera, RAM (show me 2 gee bees ), internal storage.
Man, if they upgrade this to current specs at the release date, I'm getting this thing the day it comes out even though Chicago isn't on the list of places to get LTE first. I'm sure it will come later this year though, I would think it's too big of a market to ignore for too long.

So basically they are going to launch a 3g Nexus? Because they will only have 4 cities up and running with LTE by "mid 2012", and they are mostly in Texas. By the time Sprint's Nexus gets LTE in your area, you will most likely want to be getting another phone anyway. Doesn't make much sense unless you seriously dont care about 4g LTE. The next Nexus phone will be the one that is attractive for Sprint, since their network will be really ramping up then.

Well it all depends on when they release it, if its in the next couple of months i will use someones upgrade on it if its later then 3 months i will hold off
The thing is even with the new fast roll out of lte i still don't know if i will have it in my city and having a nexus device for 2 years waiting for better stuff wouldnt kill me like how frusturating the epic was with updates. like i said tho it all depends when they release it, if its longer then 3 months then it might be too old too me. and wait...
Well I can't get a new phone until July, but this is great news! Now I know my next phone will be a quad-core 1.5GHz (or more) phone with an HD display, 12 MP camera, and LTE!

It's a penta-band HSPA+ phone, so it should work on T-Mo (and most HSPA network around the world). T-Mo doesn't really have a true 4G network; in their marketing terms, HSPA+ = 4G.

HTC One X was a reason, thus it dropped from ~500+
Next reason is SGS III
which may not be around the market for another 2months..
But then one may want SGS III...
you can wait 2months and then decide... or compromise $30-50 price difference now and enjoy this nexus for next two months

my recent device history is:
Vibrant -> Atrix -> SGS II -> Nexus S
I had SGS II and Nexus S simultaneously and I kept Nexus for its stability and curved display(feels much better than flat one). It is as snappy as sgsII and only part where I have to wait for the phone to process is when it is processing panaroma.
I really do not require an upgrade but still i'm going for gnexus as im excited to try what google has on platter with this one.
Considering I kept SGS based Nexus S over SGSII, it is highly likely that I will still stick to Gnexus despite of sgsIII launch.

HTC One X was a reason, thus it dropped from ~500+
Next reason is SGS III
which may not be around the market for another 2months..
But then one may want SGS III...

This is the price trend of the G Nexus, which is the worst I've seen on a nexus phone, yeah buy one, by the time the GS3 and iphone 5 are out this phone will not worth crap. I'd give this one a $300 price range in 2 months.

wow thats a huge dip in a short time, really never seen that for a phone. is the gnex that bad? i highly doubt it, but wow.
you can buy them locally for $350-$400 too, I dont find this as the best deal in the world, but its still pretty good.

This is the best online deal I have come across so far.
As far xda market trend, hardly anyone is willing to sell one below 450-480 despite of this deal being in place (an many other deals below 450 for quite a long)
PS: Members will be grateful if someone can purchase them locally for ~350 and sale on xda at that price; unfortunately nothing of that sort has happened yet..

What carrier is everyone using? I use mine on Verizon and am very happy with it.

I'm actually using a US version Deb on Vodafone in India...
They're pretty much the Indian Verizon...
High priced, with better customer service compared to the others.
Probably gonna go with T-mo or Straight Talk when I'm in the US this summer...

I use my German Nexus 7 2013 on the T-Mobile network. T-Mobile here is mostly like Verizon, fastest network and best coverage, but high premium price as well. I'm on it through a re-seller which means I pay 14€ per month instead of 35€ (just have to cancel the contract in time). It's working pretty well, unless I'm in a pretty small town, I get good 4G coverage. No need to complain so far.

I don't own a deb but is though I'd say that this also describes Verizon. They are practically the same exact way

Yeah. Verizon is expensive, but you get your money's worth. If you want a good-speed data connection just about anywhere you live, work, or travel within the US, Verizon and AT&T are really your only choices.

Though it does amaze me how much they charge for 1GB of data in the US.
I pay 5$ for 1 GB 3G data... You guys probably pay at least 25$. The carriers get away with murder there. ?

Well you have to understand that the US is one of the largest countries on Earth and we expect coverage basically everywhere. US carriers have enormous overhead to cover such a large area and thus, we pay more than other countries because of that. It's simple math, really.

What reseller is that? I'm mulling over getting a LTE sim for my N7, but the "original" T-Mobile or Vodafone contracts are a little steep for my taste.
Hello
Italian deb user here. Very satisfied with the device. A question: how are data plan caps (limit) and prices overall?
Here I am with h3g, 1 GB x Day, 20 € month... 4g.
A little high for me.
Bye

I grabbed a nice offer from sparhandy.de which I found via mydealz.de, 5GB T-Mobile plan via mobilcom-debitel for 35€ and sparhandy pays me 22€ back each month for the 24 month contract. You have to have a bit of luck and frequent those bargain websites, but there are often good data plan offerings there. 5GB was a bit overkill for me, but it was only 3€ more expensive than the 3GB option and there was nothing below that, so I grabbed it.
UK deb owner here, paying 15 GBP (currently about 24.50 USD) per month for 10GB on the Three network. At the moment I'm only using about .5GB so I could drop to a lower tariff any time.
Loving the deb, though. Faster and smoother than anything else I've got, including my pc.
I'd be interested to know why you all went for the deb. In my case, I connect to my home pc while out and about so that I can check my webcam motion detector, run apps on the pc, download/upload files from the pc, and so on. As well as keeping up with websites, Twitter, and forums, and rss feeds with the new Play Newsstand app.

My dad had unlimited data on 3g
They made him switch off when going to 4g
He pays roughly the same amount for 2gb on 4g add he did for unlimited 3g
